Reviews of Steel Rigg Car Park
D. H.
Easy to access and accessible place for viewing Hadrian's Wall. Lots of local wildlife including swifts and swallows. Really beautiful landscape. First 15 minutes is free parking, and then £4 for up to three hours, so perfect to just view quickly and then head onwards in journey.
J.
It charges £2 per hour. However from there you can take numerous ways to walk alongside Hadrian's Wall with amazing views. If you gonna drift to its left hand side and walk into the "forest" - will find the boothy you can stay in.
j. c.
Great car park to start your walk from but unfortunately it's small I think it holds about 30 to 35 cars. Be there early not to be disappointed. It is not free you have to pay.
A. S.
We had gone to Corbridge thinking we could see a bit of Hadrian’s wall there but Nope! The lady there told us to come & park here. We were on our way up to Edinburgh & didn’t have a lot of time. This was perfect & the vistas fantastic.
S. P. (.
Not the largest lot, they allowed overflow parking the day we were there, do not know if it’s possible every day. It’s a very popular walk to Sycamore Gap, most people follow the wall to it and circle back on the lower path.
R. R.
Good location for a 1 mile hike to sycamore gap. Terrain is rugged and steep in places, so proper hiking boots are needed.
Carpark machine takes cash and card and is pay and display
S. H.
Pay and display carpark. £3 for 3 hours or £10 for the day. Pay cash or debit card. Be there early it's only small. Excellent for visiting Sycamore Gap and the Cliffs for climbing.
A. F.
This is a must visit place. Ideally situated to park your car and have a walk down to Sycamore Gap. There are 2 routes you can take, 1 which you walk along side the wall with is very up and down and 1 where the talk a gentler path. Lovely viewpoint to take some photos. Sycamore Gap is only around half an hour walk from here.
S. W.
About the best place to park to see some of the most dramatic parts of the wall. We paid £10 for all day parking, such a bargain entry price to some of the best walking the UK has to offer.
S. W.
Steel Rig
Park here if you are setting of for Sycamore Gap,
and have sensible foot wear .
J. K.
Great car park for start of walking the wall 😊 amazing views straight away, first day there yesterday and so worth the journey and its not bad for parking £3 for three hours, the ticket machine takes change or card. I will definitely be back but will stay longer next time for sure. Its very rocky at the beginning of the walk but its worth it for the views and see parts of the amazing hadrian's Wall and sycamore gap 😊
K. W.
£3 to park for 4hrs, good place to walk to the Sycamore Gap from. Can go along the wall (very up and down but fun) or walk back down the hill a little and go the flatter route along the back of the ridge.
J. S.
Excellent spot to start a walk on the wall, here to Housesteads and back is a comfortable 2 to 3 hours taking in the amazing Sycamore Gap on the way. Parking is £3 for 3 hours and there's often a coffee van to welcome you back when you're done.
J. S.
Good car park for seeing the wall if you don’t want to pay for museums. The views are spectacular and well worth the walk.
Parking is £3 for two hours to a max of £10 a day. The contactless wasn’t working so we made the most of our free 15 minutes. Good thing too because the ranger arrived shortly after we returned.
M. M.
Super cheap and the perfect place to park for a long or short walk to Sycamore Gap.
M. l.
Excellent location for walking along this particular section of Hardians wall and of course, Sycamore gap.
The car park gets full very quickly so I would recommend getting there early - pre 10 on a weekday.
Parking meter is modern so takes card or change.
R. K.
Fantastic place to stop and see a good stretch of Hadrians Wall, a Roman ruin at Milecastle 39 and Sycamore Gap. There's even a man with a van selling coffee in the car park!
C. g.
Very good CarPark to walk to see the (Kevin Costner)Tree 30 minute walk or do the 5 mile circuit and see the famous Duck
D. H.
Fantastic views overlooking Hadrians wall, one of the best places for access to walking besides the wall both ways and enjoying the great views
A. G.
Amazing. Got wet though! Steep little climbs or you can go around on flat. Kids loved it. Little adventure
S. B.
A good place to see Hadrian Wall not for small kid families. Be sure to lock away items out of sight in your car. Take a bottle of water with.
J. H.
Superlative customer care from Steve the guide/attendant. On realising that service buses were cancelled owing to staff shortages, and that passengers would be stranded, after he had finished work he went out of his way to offer a lift to four weary travellers and a dog. He waved away an offer of petrol money. This man should be nominated for an OBE, he is every tourist organisation's dream - or should be. Thank you Steve, thank you.
L. H.
The car park costs £3 for 3 hours and £2 for every hour after up to £10 for the day. It is a very expensive car park when you can park for free at other forts as a member and most other car parks in Northumberland are free. There are no toilets at the car park. You can walk from this car park along Hadrian's Wall to Homestead Fort. The walk and back is 6 miles. Depending on how fit and how fast you walk you may just be able to do the walk in 3 hours but I would suggest paying more for car parking. The scenery is beautiful and you do get to see sections of the completed wall.
G.
Great day out! 3quid for 3 hours. Enough time to get up to the lake and back 👌
J. M.
Car park is a bit on the pricey side, as we was the only car there. On the other hand the walk round made up for it.
N. B.
Fantastic spot with brilliant views of the sill and Hadrian’s Wall
M. B.
Great central parking place for many routes at a reasonable price.
Just thought I'd mention there was no bins for dog waste.
No wonder we saw dog waste and full bags on route.
This is the reason I'm giving it 3 stars
G. G.
Good car park for being next to roman Wall and view of the tarn. Classic photo view
G. W.
Perfect car park for walking on some of the best bits of Hadrian's Wall. There's only about a 2 minute walk between the car park and the wall. You do pay for that privilege though. £3 for 3 hours and the £2 for every hour after that. A day's walking can get very expensive. At least it takes cards.
J. T.
We stopped off for a coffee from a van in the car park which was very busy.We drank it looking out at the vista which was stunning
S. B.
What a beautiful area. We walked a 4 mile circular route, following the wall and had a spot of lunch at Sycamore gap. I was the cat that got the cream sitting under the tree that was filmed in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Not an easy walk, however there is a path that goes around the tough parts. The views on the route are just something beautiful. A great afternoon out. There was a coffee van in the car park when I arrived, he had gone when I got back. It looked really good.
A. D.
A great place to stop and see some of Hadrian’s Wall! There were some very helpful National Park representatives who provided us with map and info on a short loop walk in the vicinity which took in the Sycamore Gap and one of the milecastles. There was even a coffee and sausage roll cart!
D. H.
Fantastic place to park and walk to housesteads Roman fort along the wall passing sycamore Gap...well photographed and looking around housesteads before returning the way you came or the path through the fields back to steel rigg car park (what views) they where filming when we were there.
P. T.
Great site for a walk but minimum stay of 4hrs was a bit excessive! It does allow for a lovely walk along the wall though...
A. S.
Quite a tough walk to Sycamore Gap - a good 40 minutes... But worth it!!
S.
Plenty of parking spaces at 8 in the morning. First 15 minutes is free and then it's £3 for up to 3 hours and £1 for each additional hour. Max £10 for the day. You must put your vehicle's registration number on the ticket as you pay so the tickets are not transferrable. Beautiful scenery in every direction and easy access to Hadrian's wall.
S. N.
Amazing on a sunny day. It was the first time we went and it is so close to newcastle! Amazing scenery nice for a group of family walk
W. J.
It's just a slab of concrete with makes spaces. It's handy to park for Sycamore gap. We paid £3 for a 3hour stay.
W. F. M.
It is park and display. Min park is 3 hrs for £3. Can walk frm this point to part of the Hadrian Wall
S. T.
Excellent access to Hadrians Wall...the parking is limited, with a confusing payment system, especially if intend staying for longer than 3hrs...
S. J.
Reasonably sized car park, ideal for a circular walk along Hadrians Wall and Vindolanda.
N. S.
A great place to start a walk along Hadrians Wall. Make sure you have plenty of change for the parking meter. It takes a card payment but quite often doesn't work. There are no bins for your litter or dog bags so just a warning.
P. J.
Great location, but car park machine a real pain. How on earth would foreign nationals manage it. Keep it simple please
T. H.
A great place to set off to explore Hadrians Wall either east or west. Immediately has splendid views of the rolling green scenery of the Northumberland moorland to the south with the craggy, rocky outcrops which the wall clings on to up close to the car park. No café etc here but close to the Sill if you want that type of place (a very interesting visitors centre and worth a visit). Wonderfully English scenery....
J. J.
Everything you want from a car park, you can park cars for a modest fee. This wins with it's location close the iconic Sycamore Gap.
L. H.
Great spot to start walks along Hadrian's wall, to Housesteads or the Sill.
M. K.
Excellent starting point for Hadrian's Wall walks.
Update - Very expensive car park. On last visit card payments not available. You have to pay in advance, so no option to stay walking a little longer.
j. b.
Great place to park if your heading out for a walk along Hadrian's wall. When I visited the parking machine was out of order so got free parking but it's normally £3 for the whole day. The tree from robin hood prince of thieves is only a short walk away too
L. J.
Be aware it's £4 to park here for the day, the machine does take cards which is handy. The footpath here is good to walk on and takes you up the very steep steps onto Steel Rigg. Further along the ridge are impressive milecastle remains and then Sycamore Gap which featured in the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves movie.
M. L.
Never mind the car park. Park there and get yourself the few hundred metres up unto the sill and enjoy the best views in Northumberland. The car park itself is quite expensive but it is worth it.
M. R. (.
I never thought I'd rate a car park, but there you are. A great place to start off walks but also for star gazing at night.
V.
Reasonable price. No gates so you won't accidentally get locked in. Not massive, but extra parking available at the Sill visitor centre anyway.
G. N.
Too busy, completely full. But perfectly situated for access to hadrian's wall
S. R.
Stunning location, some difficult ascents/descents so don't go if you're not reasonably agile, but we'll worth it for the views. Also, decent outdoor footwear advised.
V. E.
If you look on the national park website there is a lovely family friendly walk that takes you over the ridge, past sycamore gap then over the fields back to the car park. Circular walk and not too hard for little kids
J. E.
Even though drisly rain a beautiful place to view
R. C.
It's a car park. The meter works. It's as expensive as you'd expect for such a car park but I don't resent paying it given the dire state of government funding for such things. It's in a great position for a walk over Steel Rigg of course and only a short walk or drive from The Sill if you need the toilet or a cuppa.
S. W.
Think this is the closest car park to Sycamore gap, easy to get to and well positioned near Hadrian's wall.
N. T.
The car park is a car park but what's it's near is a fantastic part of Hadrian's Wall and only a short walk to Sycamore Pass.
D.
Although it's just a car park; stunning picturesque views, with a path asking Hadrian's wall leading you the tree that's off the film Robin Hood!!! Amazing.
F. “. P.
Beautiful area and excellent customer service.
S. R.
It's a car park. Good starting point for short walks or walks.😊
F. C.
Great location for getting onto the wall, but car parks quite small so get there early!
A. P.
Car park for easy access to hadrians wall and the yew tree gap
Pay by cash or card/contactless
J. E.
Lots of space and is the start of a lovely walk to the Sycamore tree. Only downside is that it costs about £3 for parking
B. T.
Good, it's a car park, there's an overflow section too.
Rather expensive, and annoying that you have to pay in advance, meant I had to keep an eye on the watch the whole time.
M. S.
Good starting point for a walk along the wall. Its also near to Sycamore Gap
C. D.
Handy place to park for the wall and Sycamore Gap - it's a bit of a climb up steps to the top so not for the faint hearted.
F. B.
A unique view of Hadrians Wall and Crag Lough. You can walk from here to Housteads Roman Fort. Not for the faint of heart though.
J. P.
Good car park with a modern meter - takes cards as well as cash and change. Great place to start a walk along the wall
C. B.
What can you say about a carpark, only one disabled parking space, no toilet facilities, however fantastic view's a nice walk and plenty of history.
S. G.
Used to be free at one time, but is now quite expensive if you want to spend the day walking. No other options than the official car parks though.
J. A.
Good access to a bonny walk of 2 hrs.good section of Hadrian wall.dramatic view. Also a cwoffee van in car park.
L. M.
Good place to go to explore Hadrian’s Wall. A beautiful, hilly walk that passes the famous tree from Robin Hood.
m. r.
Although the car park is small it’s right at the start of the walk
S. M.
As car parks go, it's beautiful. Remember that if you pay for parking here, it covers the other nearby car parks too
C. l.
One of the best locations on the Wall. Can get busy though. Start from here for Sycamore Gap.
S. G.
Excellent car park and ideal for the Sycamore Gap.
i.
Trailhead for the best part of Hadrian's Wall. It's pay to park here, but I'm not sure how much.
P. N.
Well placed for Hadrians Wall and Sycamore Gap. Bit pricey if going for a longish walk at £2 an hour.
R. F.

I. H.
Bit pricey but an ideal starting point to walk the wall. There is a coffee van there but very expensive
P. S.
It's a car park, what more can you say. It has nice views of Northumberland though
J. H.
Great place to stop for Hadrian's wall and the 'Prince of thieves' sycamore tree.
S. B.

Good starting point for a hike along Hadrian's Wall. Unfortunately parking costs two pounds for an hour. Our credit card (also that of the other tourists) didn't work at the machine. Since it was our first day in England, we didn't have any small change. Then a very friendly English gentleman gave us £6!!! so that we could go on our planned hike. The car park is conveniently located a few meters from the wall and the footpath towards Sycamore Gap. I estimate that there are around 30 parking spaces.
