Reviews of The Racecourse
O. A.
This is a beautiful park to take a walk/run at any time of the day. You could also watch the sunrise -Beautiful! Weekends are usually better as it's packed with loads of sports loving individuals playing together. There's soccer, tennis, cycling, dog-walking, and plenty space for walks.
M.
It was nice. I liked it. There was plenty of room for everyone who was there and you could probably get a few more people there easily and you wouldn't be cramped for space. There was plenty of grass with footpaths crisscrossed throughout, but definitely definitely more grass. Thumbs up
Signed
A Boomer

It's OK! It's a beautiful wide open space, with bus routes from all over town. So why just an ok review, well....there are local shops and fast food of all kinds close by but no public toilets that we could find. So, yes it's great in the summer for picnics but amenities are not great here. It is used to host some wicked events every year, the fireworks and fair gets packed out every year. The food, drink an music festivals usually provide toilet facilities themselves. Although the fireworks are free, the festivals are for ticket holders and are usually well maintained with security and any necessary road closures.
Sadly it is not safe at night. There have been many incidents here and residents are often advised to walk the perimeter rather than through the middle. The wide open space makes it very dark at night as it is not well lit.
H. O.
Good but very expensive was there less than an hour n £50 down! Sausage in a baguette £7! Small bag pick n mix haribo stall £10! Good though and set out very well x
V. L.
Great open space, lots of good play equipment
M. K.
It is just an amazing area designed for entertainment. Clean environment makes it more perfect for people of all ages to come and enjoy their leaisure time here. I personally find it interesting and a very charming place to bring kids to enjoy their time in this large area.
S. W.
Lovely morning on the racecourse at te dragon Park area, then a bit of frizby play, with a walk round the racecourse & seeing the great new refurbed basketball court 🏀👍❤️❤️
L. V.
Great place to bring the kids or walk the dog when ever the fireworks are on like tonight they have plenty of food stalls and fun fair rides for all ages. Live music great atmosphere clean and tidy
B. W.
Wonderful park area in Northampton. It never was a racecourse which is why the pub next to it is called the White Elephant; the thirsty racegoers never materialised. The darker side is that it was once outside the town and a place for public executions.
Q.
Take an early morning walk/run and watch the sunrise -Beautiful! Share a smile, Nod your head or say good morning to like minded people. Sets you up for the day🤗
P. M. L.
Awkward times, but nice to get out and get some excercise with the family. People just trying to make life as normal as we can in such testing times, but as safely distanced as can be.
B. D.
Nice place to go if you have a child or dog who wants a run around, lots of open space plus play parks (a couple of which are dog-friendly as long as they are on leads and you clean up after them). Because it's such an open space there can be a bit of litter around as some people don't care enough to pick up after themselves and use one of the bins around the paths, but overall it's a lovely place to go, especially on a spring or summer day. Some great views of the approaching weather too!
B. B.
Kids love it here plenty of open space and always has events and shows.
S. O.
Lovely grounds at the edge of town, bordering Kettering Rd, which is the main entrance area. Sprawling grounds with several mainly rugby and football pitches, basketball court and open grounds for various annual festivals and events. At the entrance besides a small free car park the old club house is now a ""medieval restaurant". Good for dog walking, but does lack woody shaded areas which pooches enjoy.
T. H.
A beautifully maintained open space for over 100 years, the racecourse always delights.
J. N.
Because we saw a bunch of youths fighting in field amazing 10/10 who needs sky sports when you racecourse kids
H. P.
Big open space with play area and basketball courts.
Very small carpark though which is often full
J. J.
A nice place for a walk when the weather is good.
Be aware of the basketball area though, if you're sensible... Not a lot of social distancing going on there!
There were a group of roller-skaters practicing their moves not far from the car park. All maintaining their distancing, sensibility - very friendly and polite - willing to chat and offer advice to anyone interested. Great to watch. They are there any Sunday the weather is good enough.
D. W.
Just been for a run here.
Sun was shining families playing and picnicking.
I saw a police officer here too which is honestly nice to see considering I don't see them around the streets most days.
2 circuits of the park is 3 miles 😉
J. M.
You know this park is always considered locally as Abington park poor relation, but there is seldom issues with rubbish, it's huge enough to exercise dogs, and to participate in your own activities without crowding other folk. All it needs are some toilet facilities, monitored and kept secure by the council and maybe a few more locally based events as Delepre gets. A lovely part of town.
C. w.
Visited for the fair, an enjoyable day out with family.
C. R.
Beautiful park, amazing view, a great place to take kids for a picnic or anything like that.I do recommend going on a sunny day👍
A. E.
My first visit for the Fireworks event.
We had a newborn with us (suitable PPE applied) so had to stand away from the front of stage on the bank to the right. The band sounded really good from what wafted across but the guys fronting it didn't seem to woo the crowds and we couldn't hear them anyway 🤷♂️
The fireworks were pleasing and entertaining with a range of styles, colours, and effects.
The concession stands were busy and whilst I don't know what they paid for their pitch, £30 for 4 hot dogs and a burger made for an expensive outing!!!
I will consider alternative options next year before returning but well done to the organisers. I have run events myself and appreciate the effort involved 👏
I. K.
Loved the fireworks there!
d. d.
Just went to the fair there only got to go on 2 rides i wanted to go on some more but Hay ho
w.
Good open space, very beautiful, good for sport , relaxing, taking the sun, playing with friends and family.
Very famous place because u can find a lot of good people there having fun. Very diverse place. Loved it , you should go there with your friends or alone whenever you are around.
S. B.
It's a big park now, the racecourse is long gone, flat good for people with walking problems, and clean
a. f.
Lots of sportfriendly places, tenis , basketball, football, cricet , rugby and more.... minus is lot of free dogs.
A. P.
Nice place in the summer for sports pitches but has an undesirable element to be aware of to, wldnt recommend walking through here at night
A. G.
Lovely open space for kids and adults sports dog walks and several play areas and sports courts .
A. M.
Good play area for younger children. My 4 year old granddaughter had a great time playing. Much improved from when I used to take her dad to play there. Could do with more seating for use older generations !
H. W.
This Racecourse got plenty of play areas for kids. Huge space...
S. J. D.
Beautiful place for Rugby, Football, Running or Walking.
A. H.
It’s very nice garden for everyone
s. G.
Well used park with 4 different play areas, cycling allowed, many events and a nice atmosphere during daylight hours.
K. L.
It was definitely a nice area with people that share same intrests such as jogging or cycling i suggest going during the summer as the area and weather suite very well ... As long as you dont want to run in a coat
r.
NOT A BAD PLACE NGL…USED TO SELL HERE FOR BARE P BUT MANDEM STARTED MOVING WRONG SO MAN HAD TO LEAVE… MY FRIEND STILL BUYS THO GOOD SERVICE COULD BE BETTER DELIVERY IS DEAD
S. A.
Lovely place nice to visite
M. S.
I was reviewing the basketball courts due for refurbishment. The park is mainly a sports park but has attractive features such as pleasant trees and open expanse of grass. It does need a refreshment facikity. It could ve a kiosk or better use made of the pavilion. Northampton is well blessed with green spaces in the town which provide attractive spaces for leisure activities.
M. R.
Its a big park. You can play football, tennis and bowls during the season. There some stuff for kids. There's nothing very special to go there for. Its mostly used by the people who live nearby.
A. D.
Nice looking park, but be carefull at night time
E. L.
There was a fun fair and we all loved it
M. K. D.
Lots of space foŕ dog walking, football, picnics etc. Play areas are varied to appeal to different ages.
S. A.
A nice open space which is great for the kids (would be better if the council looked after the grounds more), but not such a great place at night, as it has quite a poor night time reputation. It's a real shame that they never added something like a water splash park, mini-golf, entertainment area and of course lighting and security that makes people feel safe, especially at night.
R. L.
Very big open grass land great for running your dog , also there's a basketball court and a kids playground, theres tennis and bowling but you'll have to see the park warden for access, there are several football pitches and I think a Sunday league play..
a. s.
Lovely area for dog walking or more energetic exersize. There's a fully fenced disused tennis court by the pavilion. You can go in and let your dog run wild in total safety. The only possible downside is a toilet, there's one in the pavilion cafe that they let you use. I don't know if available during covid restrictions.
R. D.
Not sure why it's called the race course seems to be a reasonable park
A. V.
My visit wasn't in the context of racing, but rather to go to a fair called the umbrella fair, with music, food etc. My 4 year old had a whale of a time, especially as there are extensive playground facilities.
P. M.
personally it's better than central park in NYC. more peaceful for example
b. t.
A great place to go for a walk
and collect your thoughts
B. R.
Great for dog's and kid's, football pitches galore + veggie cafe' basketball area lots of fun for everyone!
N. K. D.
Nice ground...Good playing area of kids and adults. The Northampton town festival was very nice with enjoyable rides, food and drink
a. S.
Love the park it's really good ,plenty of space for your workout
A. W.
Visited for the fireworks, nice to see everyone finally out, and supporting our local businesses, live entertainment & fairground rides 👍
M. W.
Beautiful park. Very spacious. And if you can, pop into the little coffee shop near by. Delicious
D. W.
It was great...lovely fresh air on a autumn morning
W. R.
Nice open fields, it's about 2 miles all the way around if you're planning to go on a run!
E. a. l. r. g.
Lovely place for a little wander, could do with some more benches, for us senior citizens, saw some e-scooters, must find out how they work, looks like fun.
J. Y.
Went here for the town carnival! Amazing day! Huge funfair! Will return next year! Look on YouTube for the event !
A. Z.
Amazing place for kids and adults lots of activities to do there!
J. T.
This is a lovely area. Quite big so no worries of too many people, although you do get the odd idiot person on a push bike. Plenty of space to have a get together with family/friends. There is a fenced of tired looking play area for younger children but is OK. As far as I am aware the parking is free and is at the racecourse end.
R. K.
Great place for a walk with dog or without lots of different kids play areas scattered around the whole park. Tennis courts. Table tennis. Basket ball courts. Plenty of room if you like to sit and read a book or sunbath.
l. C.
Great for families, Runners, Skaters and dog walkers. Large open space with car park and tennis courts. Great little coffee shop just around the corner from play area and an ice cream van in the summer
S. P.
It's an awesome garden, so huge and always full of life. There are events and activities held for recreation on the weekends. In a nice summer weather the view is stunning when the sun sets. If you are in Northampton, you should surely visit here at least for an evening stroll.
O. L.
A very big park in Northampton, full of fields. The park has 3 play areas for children and a basketball and tennis courts. Many people come to play football on the field or exercise generally. No toilets and gets very dangerous at night.
J. K.
Big park. A bit dangerous place to be at night as vast area unlighted but very friendly during the day.
K. Z.
Perfect park to hang out. There are basketball courts, football courts, tennis courts. A very good place for runners. There are also a playground. Only a little bit of benches
K. H.
Big open park with some sports facilities, football pitches and tennis courts and the pavements are smooth enough for skating. Nice sized park for running around, otherwise not a lot to do here. The annual umbrella fair is a must see! No public toilets, although the umbrella fair are based in the pavillion and may be able to help out. The park has a bit of a reputation for being a hot spot for crime in the evening (like most urban parks) so be sensible and keep your valuables out of sight.
j. w.
A good space for various events, has two kiddies playgrounds, basketball court, tennis courts, large slide which has been recently added, car parking, accessible by bus or walking from town, clean. I think you can hire bikes now.
j. m.
I was there for carnival! Enjoyed a lot
S.
With Football & Rugby pitches, Basketball courts and play areas there is something for everyone.
S. A.
Very large green park, plenty of options and choices of games areas to entertain and accommodate many age groups. Plenty of runners regularly go there as groups or singularly. Bikers, too.
Has 3 main playing areas with swings and more games for kids and younger children and plenty of green for football, rugby and cricket.
It also has tennis courts and basketball courts.
It is a brilliant place to take family to on a sunny day.
N. Q.
Great expensive Park where you can look far across in many directions and have have the freedom of air and space around your head;
also good for cyclists roller skaters kite flying fieldsports 3 playgrounds basketball courts, in frequent mass events such as fun fairs and Town Show;
the only drawback is lack of facilities - look for the Umbrella Fair premise for toilets and refreshments during daytime hours - adjacent to Kettering Road
K. C.
The staff whom I encountered are all up for a laugh, always pleasant and polite and they chose to speak to you which nowadays seems to be too much trouble.
The food was very good and plentiful. The waiting staff were pleasant and polite as well.
From the moment you arrive to when you leave there is no need to leave your table and you do not feel rushed.
L. H.
Pretty fun to play basketball, go on runs/walks and open enough to always have a place to kick a football. Only problem is that if you go at an unpopular hour, there is a 40% chance that you will get stabbed.
E. B.
I played there in a band at the town show, the first since the pandemic. It was good to see the people out enjoying life with their friends and family.
B. B.
A very nice day to walk on The Racecourse it's good to see things slowly back to normal watching a few games of football a little bit more warmth in the sun would of taken the chill out of the air.
p. s.
Good sized open space for exercising, either yourself of the dog. Also good for taking the kids, the equipment in the playground needs some paint and attention. Various events throughout the summer but generally underused by the council for events. Plenty of sports teams use the pitches during the football/rugby season. One cautionary note is try to avoid during darkness or at least stick to the well lit paths.
K. J. N.
Lovely open space with loads of history. Some of it a bit macabre.
The Umbrella Cafe is based here at the Pavilion and is well worth a visit. Great community involvement in community projects. They hold the Umbrella Fair here every August and it's an all inclusive festival with free entrance and loads of great original music.
r. b.
Lovely park, clean and well presented. Great for kids to run about in and for long walks!
G. P.
I've always loved the Racecourse, but over lockdown it has really proved it's worth. It really is one of the jewels of the town. So much space to play, exercise and have fun. I use it every single day, and my life is better for it.
M. R.
A 3 star rating seems fair...that equates to 'Its OK' which sums up The Racecourse i guess. A huge open space with plenty of pathways which are now well lit. 5 playgrounds for various age groups and basketball courts.
Parking available via Kettering Road, although there are limited spaces there.
A. W.
Nicely kept area with a fenced off area with swings and slides for the the youngsters. There is a path all the way round it which makes a nice little walk to watch or play football on the 2 pitches and the best bit is free parking.
R. E.
Massive park. Lots of space for the family friends and pets .Park has hoops, play ground about 3 bowling fields ,3 tennis courts and a few soccer fields and lots of space and seating available nice for a BBQ on a hot summers day . Nice pathways and lots of parking for about a 100 cars .
M. t.
Its the race course I used to walk though here daily just to get to work. Its large green and full of grass. great for walking the dog
M. T.
Very big place for jogging and running and lots of green space to sit down nice and quite. 😃👍
B. D.
Three no four kids play areas, lots of open space, fresh air and trees. Perfect for those hot summer days
R. R.
Waited around all day but didn't see a single horse! However, a great venue for The Park Run and so I've gone for the full 5 stars anyway. Loads of room, nice and flat. Grass. Etc. And so on.
l. B.
Two play area's for children, tennis courts, basketball court, green bowling, football & vast green area. Umbrella cafe and 2nd hand bike shop. Free parking. Weekly Saturday park runs are very popular. Yearly Summer fairs and firework displays. Something for everyone.
j. e. t.
A lovely place for walking peacefully, busy at times with sports. Some beautiful old , well looked after trees. A decent cafe and children's play areas
D.
Great place !
K. G.
Nice Northampton festival day!!
M. B.
Lovely open space within a cramped and cluttered town. Loads of beautiful big old trees.
K. H.
A beautiful place for many reasons. Especially fond of the Pavilion where the cafe is usually open for a nice meeting place with friends, a great music venue some evenings and a friendly place where I can take my dog for a walk and a drink for him too. The Umbrella Fair Organisation has utilised this building perfectly 😀
S. j.
Best Park for jogging in Northampton
K. K.
Great park. Nice for activities like playing football or jogging. Sadly there is no proper pull up or dip bars (calisthenics set) as it would make this park complete.
S. M.
I love this park - it is well used. It is more like an old fashioned recreational ground.
It has a variety of children's playgrounds catering for different ages of children.
It even has areas that might - in a good light - be considered 'promenades'
S. B.
Enjoyed the fireworks for Guy Fawkes Night here.
The park is a little run down, a few rough people hang out there and empty alcohol cans are spread everywhere.
Every occasion I will get offered at least one stolen item for sale! Bicycle, phone, TV, laptop etc
S. P.
Lovely during day but mainly a large patch of grass (old racecourse) some swings and benches. Rugby and football practised here. Has some events and fairs during year. Don't use. It after dark although council have now added lighting
F. G.
I used to live in Colwyn road my garden opened on to the racecourse I live somewhere else now but still have friends who live near the racecourse I visit them and if is dry we usually have a walk around the racecourse,
S. G.
Nice park. Beautiful at dawn when its quiet and all the squirrels come out.
K. B.
Love going to the park for a walk every morning.
So relaxing looking at nature and also saying hello to kind hearted people.
P. P.
great place for pets, football, sunset ...
G. C.
Nice for a daytime walk, although gets very busy. Wouldn't want to walk around at night though.
A. H.
Lots of other dog walkers today and very windy, but super handy for those living in Northampton town, with the limited travel restrictions at the moment
P. F.
Northampton festival was held over 2 days..
r. r.
Great and huge park , kids playing area is very nice.
I. E.
Dear Aimee, Anna, and the rest of your team
Thank you for booking our multi-purpose planetarium. The children were an absolute delight, and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves as much as us!
All the best, see you again in the future
J. P.
I do my park runs every Saturday morning here. On Friday this park attracts drinkers who never put their rubbish in the bins which means when you turn up on Saturday there are bottles or rubbish everywhere and broken glass which is dangerous for little children. The council could do with cleaning this park more often.
G. B.
Looks bit run down play area for kids compared to Abington park. Went there for hot air balloon. Was ok . Being a race course before the park is pretty much on flat level , handy to teach young ones cycling.
P. P.
Great venue for the Polish Family Picnic Northampton. Initially secured by one friendly Police officer with a van which became a tourist attraction packed with kids. After an hour or 2 the policeman left and there were no issues whatsoever throughout the course of the event. Enjoyed it a lot. Many thanks to Northampton Polish Association and the greatest drum player - Irek from Harmfool. With best regards to him and the rest of the band =)
k. W.
Nice little park to just chill in but I really wish the counsel would modernise it like other towns do. The place really needs a good clean up and some extra bits added.
c. s.
Now called the Black Prince. Still a bit of a Rockers pub. Good range of real ales, includes ones brewed on the premises and also ciders. Nice large garden at the back. Very dog friendly pup and the people a friendly too. Owed by the same people as the Olde England, which is by the racecourse.
B. F.
Good place to let the kids and dogs run free
W. K.
A beautiful place for family time out. Beautifully green.
S. H.
Lovely big open space, great for loads of activities
V. D. J.
Used for a variety of activities and meets, lots of fairs and fire work exhibitions held here. There are tennis and basketball courts, plus a kiddie park and plenty of open grass to play soccer.
l. c.
Very big and nice to walk through, little parks and a small zip line, pretty much always an ice-cream van/cart nice to get away from the roads
B. S.
My favourite park in Northampton. So much space, many different playgrounds for all ages of children. Lots of dogs too.
J. J.
Large open place grassland park with kids play equipment, great for daytime use
M. L.
A huge open space with a small childrens park . A bowling green . And a fab restuarant. Many football rugby and cricket pitches and great for walking the dog or an early morning jog.
G. M.
Nice and quiet at these uncertainty time of lockdown.
But when open what a family friendly atmosphere.
Kids loves it.
H. B.
It's a beautiful place to take a walk and enjoy some fresh air.
b.
Wonderful, refreshing for the whole family. If only there were toilets it would be perfect.
Z. A.
Park run every Saturday morning is very fun and friendly. Can be dangerous at night due to it not being very lit up. 5/5 would recommend to a friend.
K. H.
very nice place to go and they have a zip wire for the kids and many other fun things to do they have a very big park and it is enters and exits all around the park she can get to majority places through the racecourse
A. H.
We went along as there was a funfair there for the bank holiday well worth it
T. K.
Had a very educating tour of theNorthampton racecourse that highlighted the uses the site has been put to since horse racing ceased in 1904. Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley appeared there with their travelling show and how it was acquired by the Ministry of defence who housed a Welsh regiment on the during the war. Very good for history buffs to follow up on.
R. J.
Nice place to spend some time
But weekend it get crowded
R. N.
It was clean, it has many play areas, my dog enjoyed it because its huge and it's perfect to have a piknik when it's hot
S. C.
A splendid park, great on a misty morning. Some play areas for kids. It had an awful reputation after dark, but daytime is lovely.
P. J.
Very beautiful and big park with varii of swings and big playground for children. Also has basketball foot ball court. Best choice during any big events like carnival etc.
M. D. C.
Had a great time with the family having play time and picnic
P. C.
Beautiful park they hold some great events
D. W.
Nice local park. Good for picnic or family games. Doesn't really offer any facilities for grown-ups but a space, but really nice local park.
n. t.
Just a nice big recreation ground type of park.
T. C.
I love the racecourse in the summer, it's so big you can find your own private space, yet be close to others... Just ashame that there is not any toliets, café s and parts figs aren't allowed...
S. M.
The place most of the free time spend by northamptons.
A. R.
A very nice big green area to do whatever you fancy on. Well kept and lots of people seem to use it (and it doesn't get particularly crowded either).
T. G. P. F.
A good accessible park, let down by safety concerns and undesirables.
I love the Racecourse, I do, but I'd never let my 14 year old daughter walk through it alone, even in the day time, the way I would with nearby Abington Park.
It's a great big space which is great for fairs etc, but due to it's topography gifting it with some dips which can make a person disappear below the horizon it just isn't safe. Unfortunately there is a distasteful local name for it that stuck: The Rape-course.
Oh, and if you're not local: IT ISNT AN ACTUAL RACECOURSE EITHER!
D. K.
When you mow a pitch, you need to use something that picks up all the dead grass. Invest in a machine designed to do it as they mow it.
Really doesn't make for a good game when the ball can't be passed.
Honestly don't expect much but a mown clear pitch is normally regarded as a given.
J. M.
Lovely and fresh, sunny walk around the parameter of the park with family.
N. B.
Cold 🥶 wet and the racecourse looks like a mega tornado ripped through it, as for the fireworks 🎆 not to bsd
T. P.
Not impressed with layout but balloon glow and fireworks brilliant
K. “.
Multiple mini parks spread across a large area meaning kids under 12 have plenty to do.
P. P.
Great for the kids scooters.play areas are quite well maintained
A. M. E.
Perfect for dogs
J. W.
