This ancient spit has been instrumental in protecting our shores. Parking your car will immediately give you stunning views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight. If you then walk down the spit you will find the historic hangars that were once used by the RAF flying boats which have now been repurposed as a dry ski slope, velodrome and climbing wall. Further still you will find Calshot Castle, now owned by English Heritage, which can be walked around and gives a different perspective on the area. At the end of the spit, you have the Lifeboat station and the coastguard tower, keeping the many vessels that use the Solent safe. From the spit you can walk back towards the Former Fawley Power Station site which is currently being used for Wind Turbine Blade storage and finishing but will eventually become Fawley Waterside, a huge new development. Back at the spit, walking west, you find a largely stone beach with its many colourful beach huts and if you walk far enough, you will eventually get to Lepe.
