Reviews of Deerleap car park
D. M.
Handy for parking a car. My only disappointment was no leaping deers. It is though a nice spot for a walk in the forest, you will likely see many non-leaping animals.
S. G.
One of my most favourite places to walk in the New Forest with the dogs. With its many gravel tracks that occasionally traverse the busy main train line from Southampton to Bournemouth, Deerleap offers stunning views across natural forest and is suitable for both walking and cycling. After your walk, pop across the road to The New Forest Wildlife Park cafe that serves meals and Costa Coffee.
K. D.
A wonderful place for walks and rest, full of silence and the smell of grass and trees. The only thing that discourages visitors is the access road to the parking full of deep holes ....
L.
Loads of free parking! The area is beautiful! A perfect place for a dog walk, even on muddy days as there’s a gravel path! Stunning views and lots of ponies! We visited in December which was lovely but I imagine in the summer it’s perfect for a picnic!
H. B.
So close to Southampton, easy to get to, lots of parking and a lovely walking route! Lovely to see horses and cows, good path and variable distances you can go!
d. “. f.
Beautiful place for walks, lots of different routes!
j. “. l.
Our first time here and such a beautiful place, been all over New forest so this no different, lovely walk, beautiful scenery and horses were a joy to watch.
A. E.
One of our favourite walks to go on, very beautiful with lots of space and different walks! only downside is that the car park can become very full during peak times and doesn't have any toilets
S. K.
Bit of a rough entrance/exit to the rather large car park. Bins provided for rubbish. Nice open spaces & woodland beyond the car park. Perfect for dog waking & hiking. Paths going off in all directions allowing for plenty of exploring with access to Ashurst, Lyndhurst & Brockenhurst if you’re up for a hike.
R.
Not only a beautiful spot but a relatively safe soft grassy place to walk your dogs because there are no adjacent roads and there is good parking away from the access road with appropriate bins. Deer do sometimes leap across the open lawn so a dog could give chase. Livestock graze sometimes in large numbers that can be intimidating to some. Dogs must be kept away from livestock by law and they may get kicked! The wooded inclosure fenced off to the west is where the deer hide out - in there the forest floor is boggy tufts of grass where ticks abound. The wide open lawn stretches 0.75 miles SW to a stream crossing. A further 0.25 miles SW is a bridge over a railway and 0.25 miles further still a foot bridge over the Beaulieu River. Beyond that you can walk SW to Matley Wood and then finally meet the B3056. Many favour heading SE from Deerleap car park for a more sheltered walk on the tracks of the wooded Longdown inclosures.

A lovely walk with plenty of open space. Great for dog walking or out with friends and family. Another beautiful part of the New Forest!
H.
Gorgeous place to walk, can easily feel like the only ones there once you park and walk off in one direction or another. Lots of wildlife. Missed the turning first time as not well signposted so just keep an eye out, it's a small road off the main one.
J. L.
A pair of wellies, waterproof trousers and a raincoat are all required to have thee best day out, observing nature, stomping through the mud and massive “puddles” a short drive or even a bus ride from the city centre.
S. P.
Good spacious car park. Just mind the bags of dog pooh that owners leave dotted around far park for the pooh fairy to collect.
R. C.
Handy for a quick walk in the forest, close to several wooded enclosures and one trail leads over a river that the dogs can cool off in. A run of the mill gravelled carpark with offering no frills and due to its proximity to Southampton and Totton it's usually quite busy in good weather.
E. G.
Love this park. It takes me 10 by car. It's really a lively wild park. I would only like to mention They fit would be nice if visitors picked up their dogs poos. I have 2 dogs and I always pick up after them. Other than that i love this place
T. W.
Lovely place to walk the dog, just a sunday stroll, there are plenty routes you can take as well.
A. B.
Typical New Forest car park. Plenty of space. Good access to large area of the forest.
R. V. b. D.
Great place for a walk with the kids & dogs. Easily accessible with lots of different routes to take. Could easily spend hours out here. Highly recommended.
R. J.
Large carpark leading to lovely walks.
Plenty of space when I visited around 6pm on a week day evening
l. l.
Perfect place for a dog walk although does get quite busy. Not very boggy as far as the forest goes which is nice.
D. l. (.
Really lovely walk but lots of dog mess left on the ground
S. H.
Dog friendly lovely scenery there are cows so if your dog is likely to chase them keep it on a leash
c. c.
Very pleasant to have a picnic or take your dog for a walk lovely place.
J. G.
Lots of routes, wildlife, rail bridges, good parking, 30 seconds from owl and otter sanctuary.
Z. H.
Great free parking vantage point to explore the New forest. A lot of trail options
Z. E.
Great place for a stroll, You can really appreciate the amazing scenery of the New Forest. It is very open and multiple different paths and routes you can take but do make sure you know were you are going as it is quite easy to get lost. There are cattle grazing too so just be sure to be aware of them and don’t get too close when bikes are coming. I recommend stopping at one of the lovely local pubs to have lunch then come here afterwards.
L. F.
Beautiful place to run or relax or take a dog for a walk.
A. L.
Not much to say. It's a gravel car park with plenty of space to park. There are bins, which is good because it is very popular with dog walkers. It was clean.
Lovely location often with grazing ponies nearby.
The main track into the car park is very bumpy, so may be an issue for sensitive people or cars that can't withstand the rough terrain.
s. h.
Love this place, great walk fabulous views.
S. D.
This is a very pretty area, but even on an average weather day off season the carpark was completely full. Dog walkers need to be reminded that they should clear up after their animals too.
J. D.
Very good place to park with some many short and long distance walks available
K.
Lovely place to take a dog for a walk.
Open areas for throwing balls
Nice bit of water for them to jump in !
S. M.
Nice car park, free, and the walk was very pleasant, got close to foals feeding from their mothers.
E. H.
Big Car Park with great surroundings and good walking routes
L. E.
Great walk, good in the rain too, tress provide some good shelter and shade from the sun
A. S.
A nice long walk, with various routes which make for a fun walk for the entire family, plus any dogs you bring along.
l. c.
Brilliant area for walking the dog or just walking, loads of paths and cuts through the trees to make it interesting. One bad point there wasn’t many dog poo bins.
A. G.
A lovely place just outside Southampton, to take a walk & get a breath of fresh air.
A fair size free car park and plenty of space to picnic, walk your dog and generally enjoy the countryside.
New Forest ponies can be seen whilst taking the many routes, short or long.
Can get very busy especially where we are all looking to get out & exercise locally.
B.
One of the many nice places within the New Forest to have a walk 🚶♂️🚶♀️
G. C.
lovely spot to park and walk from.lovely part of the forest.
N. N. R. C.
Great place.
Rubbish bins for both dog and ♻️ generally they prefer if you take your Rubbish home...save the wildlife and the New Forest please.
Never fails to make me feel at peace and so close to civilisation.
Always a favourite.
M. L.
Lovely open spot with great walks
A. S.
Lovely place for a stroll/dog walk, plenty of enclosures leading from the main stretch
Just wish people would pick up their dog pooh (its really not difficult) and please stop hanging filled pooh bags from the trees and bushes like its a fashion - this can cause serious damage to ponies and wildlife
Let's keep our beautiful forest clean so we can all enjoy it
A. S.
5 stars not so much for the car park (though that's perfectly fine) but for the area it gives access to, which combines a huge expanse of large open spaces with forestry enclosures with well maintained paths. One of my favourite places to take the dog for a walk.
Note there are toilet facilities and a café at the New Forest Wildlife centre (with its own parking) just across the main road from this car park, but Deerleap is the place to come for walk.
P. R.
Great place to start a walk or bike ride from. Such a lovely area. Watch out for the horses!
g. C.
We love it here. Dogs love the open space and woods.
R. W.
Such a beautiful part of the new forest. You can just do a small walk or head over towards Beaulieu Rd station and stop off at the pub.
T. P.
One of the best 5 miles I've walked and photographed in the New Forest.
J. W.
Its a very spacious carpark with 2 sections. Every time I've been, I've managed to find a space with no problems. The only problem I encountered was the lack of signs so I missed the turning. This wasn't too much of a problem but you just have to keep an eye out.
S. d. F.
Great for dog walking and mountain biking.
W. T.
Good parking area. Lovely walk.
M. E.
Love the outside great for dog walks day or night horses are friendly and often say hello to my dog great place day or night just take snacks and
A. W.
Great walks, good for dogs
J. S.
To get to the carpark, lots of deep pot holes. Car park can get very full. Lovely path to follow or get off the beaten track. Not suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
S. D. C. M.
Simply a quiet open car park, leading to some nice new forest countryside. Many walking routes, open space used by dog walkers
N. S.
(quote from hampshire dog club)
******* IMPORTANT *******
Due to the number of dogs being exercised daily because of the current situation, please remember when in public you must keep your dog on lead. If you do not have excellent recall and can stop your dog rushing up to others, you should never let them off around unknown dogs. There have been reports of numerous incidents locally and several serious incidents in the national news, such as the baby recently hospitalised after being bitten in a play park. There have also been reports of livestock being attacked. It is entirely irresponsible as a dog owner to allow your dog to rush up to other animals.
Remember: Just because your dog is friendly it doesn’t mean others are! The unknown dog could be aggressive or nervous and your dog could make it worse. Dog etiquette dictates if another dog is on lead, then put yours on!
B.
Very nice place. Perfect for dogs. One thing to watch out - quite a few horses and lots of manure.
m. c.
Ok for dog walk. Most dog walkers clear up after their dogs. National Park Authority should stop putting up barriers to car parks and maybe spend more on cleaning up the rubbish left by cyclists (plastic bottles thrown on the roadside) and other visitors to the forest.
J. M.
A gorgeous place just outside Southampton . From the carpark there are a variety of walks, all lovely. At the moment there are young forest ponies and cattle to see making it delightful for children.
N. E.
Good spot for a gentle family walk
A. S.
Nice quieter part of the new forest, horses all around nice scenic views.
G. P.
Best walks for people living in soton! Very close and lots of paths :) a bit pot holey, though
D. P.
Not ce place, plenty of parking. Disappointed with the amount of people that allow their dogs to poo and don't clear up after them!!!
W. C.
One of the beat places in the New Forest to walk the pooch and take in some wonderful sights and sounds.
Walk down the footpath and it will lead you over a bridge, just after the bridge is a pond to cool the doggies down!
I. C.
Family walk across open heathland and small woods. Loads of puddles after several rainy days, so stout boots needed.
B. T.
Gorgeous scenery, even some ponies if you walk far enough. It's recommend a 4x4, the cattle grates were a bit much for my little hatchback.
M.
Car park road is poorly maintained with large potholes. Some of the parking spaces are on mud. Not helped by inconsiderate parking. On the positive, it does allow easy access.
K. P.
Big car park and lively walks from it
A. ‘. J.
Lovely open space with an enclosed enclosure one side and open woodland to the other with lots of paths and hiding places, a wealth of terrains in one area. Love it.
J. E.
Great place for a walk or bike ride
T. “. C.
Busy but big car park so was space. Just have to look out for off lead dogs in the car park zooming around!
A. T.
The car park is just a car park but Deerleap is great for a walk, not the best walk in the New Forest but pleasant enough esp if you've got a dog to walk
C. l.
Big car park for nice walk in the forest. Usually quite a few ponies there. Does tend to get a little busy on weekends though.
M. M.
Free parking lovely walks. Really nice part of the forest
P. H.
Busy Forest carpark on the Southampton edge of the National Park.
Made famous by the Saints FC comical MTB ride video.
M. K.
Car park is a car park, but the trails starting here will lead you through marvellous forest and clearings sites. Have a walk, have a picnic, enjoy!
P. W.
Lots of parking. Lovely mix of open grassy areas and covered trees. Some unique swings and see-saws too
A. M.
Potholed track but great location to access the Forest.
No facilities other than parking.
A. P.
Free, large car park. Perfect area for long walks, taking in the New Forest scenery.
K. Q.
This is a good place to start a easy walk and if you do not mind coming back the same way you went can be done in a wheelchair without much difficulty if its not too muddy.
S. R.
Beautiful walks and views!
T. M.
Beautiful sunny day, arrived at 10am, by the time we left at 11.30 the car park was stuffed, with people parking on the lane into the carpark. Bit chaotic!
P.
Love this car park, straight off the motorway into the forest of nothing about.
D. H.
Nothing to complain about here, as you have a choice of wide open space, plenty of room for exercising yourself and your pets and woodland walks
D. T.
Great place to walk the dog or do some horse ridding. Always clean and full of wide life’s animals
Z. R.
It is a chilled walk that has lovely views surrounding it. It isn't a very long walk and is suitable for dog walkers or it could be for someone who doesn't have a dog.
C. C.
Has easy access to the forest it also has a lot of holes in it due to the popularity of the area as it is a wonderful place for walking with children and dogs
D. C.
Lovely walk, great for the kids to run around and the dog also loved the vast openness of space!
N. C.
Parked the campervan there and chilled out. If you're a dog owner, this is a great place to come.
J. P.
It's a car park, does it need rating?!
Actually easy to miss owing to one small incongruous sign on opposite side of the road - keep your eyes out for it!
