Reviews of Risley Moss
T. W.
Lovely place for a short walk, really well maintained and some beautiful photo opportunities. The dog loved it, the kids loved it and so we came away refreshed from the woods.
L. F. I.
Excellent for a walk in family, really great day!
If you get some sun, enjoy it with a picnic, there's nice tables in some amazing areas.
J. P.
Great for a short walk, seemed very peaceful walking around. Easily accessible for everyone and great for dogs
C. E.
Great for a long walk and to keep busy with the kids for a bit, great centre to get a map and things on the map to find.. been here couple of times the kids love it. We will be back soon. :)
B. P.
Great for a short 2km walk, there's a picnic area, too. Unfortunately, the visitor centre and public toilets don't seem to be open on a Sunday. It's also pretty quiet, not too many people so worth a visit if you're local.
N. G. M.
Lovely place ! Added bonus was very clean toilets
D. W.
Lovely to walk around with nice paths around the park but can get muddy in parts so don't forget your wellies. There are wooden carvings doted around the park and on park benches which give focal points which add to the walk.
C. S.
A lovely little nature reserve with a circular walking route of about a mile. A couple of bird hides with varied species. Sculpture trail. Woodland and moss. There is free parking, a visitors centre with toilets and piknick tables, benches and grassy areas. Suitable for prams and possibly wheelchairs as some of the path is tarmac and some is gravel. Good for dog walking on a lead.
R. P.
Very popular place, had a lovely walk around here today with my daughters and the dogs, we've not been here for years and it's right on our doorstep. Used to bring the children when they were small, there were lots of families and dog walkers as was a lovely autumn day, albeit a little bit muddy. There is a car park which is free, (which makes a change ) There are hideaways where you can birdwatch from and a number of carved sculptures. Wont leave it so long till my next visit .
S. B.
Love this place, it so peaceful, lots of fun for kids to be kids, climbing trees, going pond fishing to see what creatures they can find and obviously put back into the water, its great for bike rides, family picnic and dog walking.
F. F.
Lovely walks, enjoy sitting in the bird hides and seeing the array of different wildlife.Would be ideal if it had a cafe, I'm sure it would be much appreciated.
J. M.
Lovely walk round area. Not much to see in the way of wildlife but admired the carvings dotted around the place.
M. P.
Lovely place to go for a nice quiet walk. Good for kids to get close to nature and see wildlife 2 minutes away from an urban area.
Parking is free and toilets are available in the visitor centre.
There are a couple of hides to watch birds from too.
A. H.
Nice calming walk through a diverse natural environment, full of nature's wonder. With chainsaw wood carved sculptures for the children to find. They will find the bogart family who love acorns to eat. Great place and just a stones throw from the main road system to the M62.
M. M.
Had a lovely morning out walking and exploring with friends and baby , ideal for all ages to enjoy , well kept paths and adventure trails , no litter or dog mess around , lovely sculpures of Boggarts and friends to find and keep children entertained , plenty of seating and eating areas and hides to watch birds , wildlife etc ,buzzards flying high in skies and dragonflies resting on leaves , will definitely be coming back in Winter to explore
A.
Great place for a easy walk in a beautiful nature reserve. Many birds to be seen here, they have many look out points. There are owls and hawks to been seen if your lucky.
Great for dogs too.
Unfortunately the tower has been burnt down by due to an act of vandalism and the reserve is currently raising money to rebuild.
K.
Decent walk, not very long but a nice loop. Shame there's many dogs running wild off of leads. Other than that its a nice area
R. R.
Nice walk, quite short and paths quite nice for those with prams or wheelchairs.
Visitor centre and toilets have not reopened yet.
D. W.
Love going for a walk around risley with the children and dogs they both love it. They have lots of new wooden carvings which my boys love to find. Normally a great place to find painted pebbles too
p. n.
Great place to explore and find the hidden figure made from wood
M. R.

E. M.
Really interesting place. Nature-lovers in the Warrington area, get yourselves here for an explore! Very atmospheric too. Definitely worth a visit.
S. G.
Nice place for to breath fresh air and enjoy half an hour relaxing walk. As the reservation area, beautiful place for wild birds watching (includes few watching cabins).
Dog walkers with well-mannered four legs companions are welcome.
Parking is free of charge, but sometimes overcrowded. There is visitor centre where you can grab cup of tea or coffee with lite snack. (Unfortunately due pandemic situation the visitor centre is closed and some routes have one way walking system implemented)
Have a good time!
M. E.
Lovely place to go for a peaceful walk or a activity to do with the kids really good for your metal health too blow away the cob webs
L. B.
Great place for walking.. . At the moment the visitors centre toilets and hides are all closed due to covid.
A. E.
Beautiful hidden gem in the Warrington Area. Couldn't believe how quiet it was. Lots of sculptures and different routes to walk round. Be sure to go through the "Mini Moss", you'll see more dragonflies than you can keep count of! Loved it.
G. Q.

G. W.
Loads of work going on to reshape this place and it's fantastic. Always popular with dog walkers and plenty of bird life to see and hear. Visited at the weekend and was very busy but no refreshments available. Good opportunity for a coffee bike/van maybe??

Go here often, as on my doorstep.
Fantastic, children love it! 3yr & 6yr old, free parking too. It's really looked after.
Great fir did walks. Lots of little hidaways.
It is just lacking somewhere to go for a drink & something to eat.
Take drinks & snacks for children
L. H.
Second try coming here (didn't realise the first time that it is closed on Fridays, luckily there is a park close by so we went there instead) and very glad we did. Really nice nature walk with interesting wooden sculptures along the way. When we went there was a crossword puzzle for kids to solve on their way round and information points you can access with a smartphone which my 3 enjoyed. Well maintained paths and all level ground so very accessible for all.
K. L.
Love it there people who we across
Are lovely
j. l.
Lovely lovely place for a walk although today whilst out with the dog she managed to find a mud pit!
T. 1.
Nice little walk for adults and children. Shame the tower got burned down
B. F.
Peaceful walks in lovely settings on my doorstep, close to motorway network and all for Free
j. p.
Free parking lovely walk, not to small but nice for little monkeys 2-6 years old. 30 minute walk around it. Can venture further using the local paths around the area.
C. B.
Great walk, not super big but lots of greenery plant life and creatures to spot. Nice and shady in parts so good for dog walks when it's warm.
S. C.
Nice wander around in the fresh air with 2 of our grandchildren, wet ground and muddy but lots of hard paths that are clean.
a. w.
Great walk for kids, thoroughly enjoy it eveytime we come here. Also a great play park adjacent to Risley Moss.
C. E.
Lovely place, lots of dog walkers, people jogging. Not very big so doesn't really take long to get round without stops. Can spend a little longer there if kids are exploring the woods etc. There is a rangers cabin with toilets but unless an event is on there isn't food or drink available.
C. L.
Lovely place. Car park can get busy. Shame the toilets were closed and no water for dogs but understandable. Much work has been done and makes for a very pleasant walk
T. G.
Fantastic walk
J. R.
Worth a visit! A hidden gem, with a short nature trail, gravel pathways and a board walk through the marsh area. Two small hides (one out of action due to covid) and fantastically wild woodland. Visitor centre and toilets closed due to COVID.
v. w.
Fabulous walk with children, dogs or on your own.. Like a small version of a forest... Plenty of places for picnics and trails to follow with children.
i. 2.
I was a regular visitor to this place during the eighties. Was immensely saddened by the tower not being there due to arson and mindless vandalism. My memory of it is very limited these days but needs to be restored!!!
I.
Nice place to walk around and always friendly staff and strangers, but the look put tower is gone and has been for a while and the open and closing times make it impossible to see a sunset or sunrise there which is a shame as it would look very beautiful from the non existent lookout tower
S. C.
Forgot how magical this place was - not been for years but I will certainly be back on a regular basis with my dogs
M. H.
Lovely place to go for a walk. Lots of information on boards about wildlife an plants. The building is closed due to covid what is understandable. But at least we can all enjoy a walk around the place. Free parking.
R. M.
A lovely place to go for a walk. Free parking and a fantastic paths to follow round with quite a few bird hides to look through. There are picnic areas and great wood sculptures to keep the kids entertained
A. R.

A. M.
A beautiful morning walk in the rain
D. S.
Nice peaceful place to have a walk and unwind, Warrington council look after this place really well, haven't seen any snakes yet but all sorts of other wildlife.
S. W.
Great place to take the kids and dogs exploring! Toilets and tourist info also available.
H. W.
So many childhood memories of Risley Moss. A beautiful area of woodland, with easy paths for children. Simple to walk around and beautiful stops along the way. Such a shame about the tower but still a fab place for a Saturday autumn walk
S. G.
Lovely walk and scenery
n. m.
Beautifully maintained small nature reserve with good facilities with toilets and well maintained paths.
Paths are arranged so that the place feels much bigger.
Great for birdwatching with a number of hides. Also good for dog walking and taking the kids for picnics.
There is a decent free car park. The nature reserve is also free admission.
Access is minutes from junction 11 off the M62
T. C.
It's a pleasant little patch of woodlands. Great for taking kids or a short dog walk.
The one downside is that it did feel quite small, the walkway loop wasn't much longer than a mile.
L. P.
Nice easy walk with plenty to see. Interesting displays inside the warden centre.
A. P.
A nice circular walk in a woodland with good views looking out over the Moss. A good spot to look out for a Hobby a small bird of prey that hunts for dragonfly over the Mossland. It has a big car park and a visitor centre,, however the later is currently closed because of covid
h. w.
Lovely place for a walk, with lots of wildlife to enjoy. Well maintained and a great place for relaxation and recharging the batteries of life.
m. d.
Beautiful woodland walk...plenty of benches if you get tired to sit and relax... beautiful sculptures scattered everywhere making a walk interesting for kids. The only downside we found is there are no bins a part from one at the visitor's centre...so if you walk the dog be prepared to carry the poo bag all the way round 😊😂
C. L.
Nice walk with our 5 year old daughter and dog.
J. F.
I love this place, lovely walk around the woods, wooden statues for the kids to find, bird hides to see the birds feeding. There is a building with info and history about the reserve and toilets too.
Unfortunately the big bird hide was burnt down by teens, but it still gets 5 stars.
H. H.
A brilliant place to visit if you are into nature and local history. We had a guide and so we're able to go onto the big moss which can be dangerous if you don't know it and she told us all about the history of the place and how it's being reclaimed after being built on as a massive munitions factory in WW2. It was fascinating and really atmospheric. In places it felt like we'd gone back 1000 years. I will definitely be going back in the summer to see how different it is then
J. D.
Great place for family walks, has wooden carvings of different animals around and different trails. There's reasonable parking and a visitor centre with toilets.
A.
Lovely walk with plenty to see, free admission and parking.
D. C. -. W. H. I.
Excellent place for a walk. Loads of information about the local wildlife at the visitor centre. Wheelchair friendly routes, free parking.
j. b.
Such Fun! Dank, muddy, misty walk, fantastic fun for the toddler mudlarks! Great surface on the main walkway for disability scooters and buggies.
C. C.
Great for walks, picnic, just a good all day out
s. h.
Lovely walk, but got bitten by loads of midges, make sure u wear bug spray
M. H.
A wonderful place for a family walk. Lots of nature to discover. Hopefully they will get a new tower built soon as that was brilliant as the kids loved it until some idiot (putting that pliotly) burnt it down. They do events throughout the year, so it's worth checking their Facebook page to see what's on. You can easily spend half an hour to a couple of hours wondering around. It's worth taking a picnic as well, when the weather is nice. 😀🏞️
K. F.
Love this place. Been coming for years. Take the whole family on a Sunday. Great walk.
S. M.
Excellent walk with the kids, activities for them to do on the eat around. Plenty of wildlife to see and lots of wild cherries, raspberries & blackberries if you look in the right spots.
M. A.
Nice little walk around.
M. R.
Great for shorter nature walks. Well maintained facilities and pathways. Could do with more bins as it encourages littering the further you get from the couple outside the visitor centre.
G. B.
Fantastic - reminds me of Florida landscape - especially the new boardwalk!
K. J.
Fantastic. Good paths and lovely place to just walk without having to worry about cars and roads and completely free.
D. G.
This a great place for a walk. If you are a birder it can be frustrating due to noise visitors make. There used to be a fantastic tower hide looking out over the moss. Unfortunately it was burned to the ground by mindless yobs. Hopefully it might be rebuilt one day. Wildlife on the reserve, from amphians to insects, fungi and birds is amazing.
B. F.
Circular walks through birch woods with interesting offshoots over peat bogs and views across the moss.
Small visitor centre (currently closed due to covid).
D. W.
Quiet place for a nice walk with the kids and dogs. Great for bird watching with 2 hides.
A. I.
This is a great area for a short walk and picnic. There is a good wheelchair friendly path all round the woods. Picnic tables dotted around in clearings all round. A large variety of plants trees and birds. Walkway over the wetlands of the moss to observe and and observation platform. The Moss Reserve is closed at about 5pm and locked so only accessible during opening hours. There are two hides for bird watching. There is a centre with wardens office. Decent amount of parking but also accessible on foot from Birchwood forest park and nearby Oakwood. There are interesting wood carvings occasionally by the main path.
F. W. “.
It's a beautiful park with a nice variaty of plant and birds and had pretty sculptures.
Now in Corona times it can be quite busy on the weekend
H. K.
Lovely, staff are lovely and we had great fun going on an elf hunt!! Easy to follow routes with designated paths and very well kept. Would recommend :)
A. C.
First time visit. Nice place but only a very short walk, we had to walk around twice. And not good for dog walks as no open fields to throw the ball.
I. B.
My wife and I have been coming to this country park off and on for years and we still love the place, the scenery and wildlife are beautiful, although we were sorry to see that the viewing tower that gave you spectacular views across the moss was burnt to the ground by youths last year 😕. The wardens are however trying to raise funds so they can get the tower rebuilt, but I think it's probably going to take some time, none the less this is still a lovely place to spend an hour or two strolling the the woodland. I'm not a bird watcher myself, but I imagine this place is an ornathologist delight. There is plenty of public parking and the wardens always seem to be on hand to answer any questions, and there is a nice information centre that provides an interesting insight into the history of the area. Thankfully there are public conveniences if you are court short too.
w.
A very well maintained and accessible, historical nature reserve with structured paths and little hidden trails. It is popular with families, dog walkers, bird watchers and is a lovely place to enjoy some peace and serenity. 2 x bird watching hides, wheelchair friendly ranger cabin with toilets, picnic tables...I love walking my dog in here 😀
A. V.
Always worth a visit. Even if it's just to escape from the day, have a walk around and get some fresh air. Well maintained and a valuable asset.
N. M.
Nice walk, the path is in good condition and the walkway was interesting. There is a good playpark nearby as well.
J. S.
Lovely area for short walks. Particularly good for children as there are wooden statues placed at intervals along the path.
R. M.
Great place for wildlife, especially dragonflies. Huge shame that the tower hide (on the picture) has been vandalised
M. W.
Nice walk with the kids . Thanks
K. “. v. d. W.
Spotlessly clean and welcoming. A great location for a peaceful stroll.
B. S.
A lovely place to walk, even in the winter months
R. H.
Lovely location, good parking facilities and scenic views. Great place for bird twitchers and those that just like to enjoy being in the outdoors, five stars! ;)
C. M.
Lovely place for a stroll. Buggy/wheel chair riendly paths. Pleanty of wildlife and great wood carvings.
r. g.
Great place for walking , and dogs , educational for children and adults too
L.
It's nice but small... Alot smaller than we expected. The viewing tower is no longer there (think it got burnt down) was just a bit of a disappointment- wasn't what I thought it would be
J. K.
Nice park with basic visitors centre, Didnt see any hobbies this visit but have in the past. Lovely hide with full feaders attracting squirrels, finches etc
K. P.
Always a lovely place to walk the dog or just yourself 👍👍👍
L. S.
Came here spontaneously on a lovely sunny Saturday. Quiet and clean with a good clear footpath to go around. It’s not huge, but was enough for my dog to enjoy off lead. And everyone I passed was very friendly and chatty. Would come again if I were in the area
L. S.
Lovely place to break up a long journey along the M6. Free parking and toilets available. Dogs allowed. Lots of paths to explore.
G. H.
I have been to Ridley Moss, many times at all seasons and always enjoyed the walks, hides and the animal life that is present within the Moss. It is a 50 mile round trip for but always worth the effort.
S. S.
A family favorite, great for bird and wildlife watching.
C. B.
Lovely flat walk for those with mobility issues or young families. Dog friendly.
J. S.
Very nice walk. Full of birds and a lot of different sounds
L. R.
Spot on grew up around here but the car park dose close so be careful not to get locked in. They could really do well if the visitors centre had a coffee bar.
K.
Went for a childrens activities put on especially for the weekend. Had a good time and all the staff were helpful. The nature reserve was well cared for.
S. R.
This is a natural nature reserve in a local area. Wooden carvings on the trail are wonderful, kids love them.
A. H.
Great walk, our kids love finding the carved animals
P. A.
Lovely walk around the moss with our dogs. New boardwalk and carving were great.
G. K.
Had a lovely walk here today despite the grotty weather. The paths are well maintained to even in the mud and rain you can stay relatively clean, if you venture off down the smaller nature trails I would recommend wellies or boots. Beautiful wood carvings all the way round and benches at frequent points.
j.
Great for a nice family walk, little sculptures for the kids to spot as you walk, buggy friendly and free parking
b. r.
Lovely walk, mainly flat. But the Tower was burnt down a couple years ago.
S. G.
nice walk around the reserve ! very helpful warden ! very muddy lagoon which both of our dogs thought was a good swimming area but turned into a mud bath and smelly mud on top of that !
e. p.
Great place to escape from the world and be at one with nature
A. A.
I'm lucky enough to have Risley Moss as one of my local places to go for a walk. It's a beautiful little oasis and there's always something to look out for no matter the time of year! If you can manage to sign up to one of the guided mossland walks throughout the non-nesting season I highly recommend it - it's really fascinating to see the site beyond the normal public areas!
J. F.
Great for bird watching and family walks. Many dog walkers.
M. H.
My local ' morning walk ' and well worth a visit
D. M.
Rained off the walk but seems nice enough, hard to give a full review as due to pandemic everything is shut
C. B.
Nice little walk, could do with some updates
J. M.
Bird hides, walk, ponds, huge sculpture of mother earth and a lovely visitors centre. A real oasis for wildlife. Unfortunately my cat sometimes brings it into the house :-(
M. B.
Peaceful woodland walk, easy to get around for an active wheelchair user.
S. T.

P. G.
Lovely nature reserve with plenty to keep kids interested.
T. B.
Wild and mysterious even today, the 220 acres that make up Risley Moss are a last remnant of the boggy wastelands that once dotted much of the Mersey Valley. Shallow lakes created at the end of the last Ice Age gradually filled with layer upon layer of spongy Sphagnum moss. Over many thousands of years, this waterlogged vegetation built up to form raised peat bogs – of which Risley Moss is now an important surviving example.
Although once described as ‘useless’, most of the Mersey mosses were eventually drained for agriculture. But, Risley Moss, which was wetter than the surrounding areas, remained an untouched wilderness until the early 1800’s.
The Industrial Revolution meant huge amounts of peat were needed for horse and cattle bedding in the rapidly expanding towns. And so, by hand, the peat was stripped and the fragile mossland changed forever.
The Second World War brought further changes. A vast munitions factory took shape on the edge of the bog, hidden from enemy bombers by mists off the Moss. Here, labouring day and night, 30,000 (mainly women) workers produced a staggering one million mines and 500,000 high explosive shells. Though the German air force targeted the supposedly secret site, only one enemy bomb fell anywhere close.
When the War was over, the site fell into dereliction. By the 1970’s the factory complex had been demolished to make way for new houses. Thankfully Risley Moss and its high wildlife value were recognised. Today Risley Moss is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a designated Local Nature Reserve.

R. W.
A nice forest walk for those with children or grandchildren. Short and easy.
A. M.
If you enjoy nature in a more raw form than a park, this place is worth going to. A nice welcome center gives you information about the place, and there are a few picknick areas too. You can stop in the bird watching hut and spend hours watching the birds and squirrels play, and from higher ground look at an older landscape full of bogs and forest. All the different areas have signs to let you know what wildlife can be found there, and beautiful wooden sculptures are dotted throughout. If its a sunny Sunday, its a great way to spend a lazy day.
T. V.

The part of the maps labelled Risley Moss nature park is a non-public wildlife habitat which can be viewed from various parts of the nature reserve. It is mostly a peat/bog area designed for local birds and insects.
Good place to go for bird spotting.
