Reviews of Askham Bar Park & Ride

100% recommended. Great service. It makes absolute sense, to park & ride and not add extra vehicles to the city traffic. Very easy to access. Very reasonably priced I was STUNNED at how busy the service & city was during Christmas market. The photo shows how busy it was on every street! The centres roads were slow moving due to the number of pedestrians & cars battling for parking space.
I.
It was really useful for a day out to York without having to worry about parking in the city centre. The car park is very large and felt safe with plenty of parking and very easy to get to off the A64. The buses are clean and not too busy and arrive frequently. A bonus was children go free with paying adults (up to 3 children go free per one paying adult) and the bus fare was reasonable with a day return ticket around £3.50. Wish more cities used park and ride!

Very convenient access to York City Centre. Buses are very regular, and despite a huge queue that seemed quite looming, we were on our bus in less than 15 minutes. No stops until the City Centre, meaning it’s direct, and provides access to around 5 stops that are all located at points of interest in the city. Then at the end of the day, just return back to the stop you got off at and it’s an easy ride back to your car. Cost effective, too - we got a Group Ticket (return for up to 5 people) for just £10, which included your parking at the Park & Ride. Will definitely use again.
N. B.
Brilliant service. Due to disruptions on the train, we decided to drive up to York and use the Park and Ride. Good facilities there, easy to buy tickets for the bus and plenty of spaces to park. Buses were regular (every 10 minutes at the time we were there) and we found that children went free with a standard adult ticket (£3.50). Took us around 10 minutes to get to the station and I believe the whole route into the centre is approximately 20 minutes.
E. T.
Couldn't be easier for a day trip to York, ideal for tourists. Kids are free with a paying adult. Electric buses are comfy and clean. Drop off is right by the castle. I think it was £3.50 for an adult, we went on a Sunday and the buses were every 20mins or so.
P. M.
A really easy way to get into York without the hassle of trying to find parking (on a weekend) £3.50 return and free parking (visited on Aug 21st) I think is spot on! Travel time to York Station was circa 10mins.
Car park at site is secure and lots of spaces - the buses are frequent, really clean with USB ports in the seat backs - them being fully electric is a great touch!
Will definitely use again when I visit York.
E. H.
Always use this when visiting York, can work out cheaper than paying for car parking, and buses every 15 minutes to Clifford Tower
E. D.
Brilliant place to park to get in to York.
I'm in a van and they have 10 spaces. Just turn left as soon as I came in to the car park and pressed a buzzer, they lifted up a barrier for me. Doesn't take long to get to York.
The staff were helpful too.
B. G.
Plenty of parking available & cost us £1.20 each to park & use our Bus Passes. We got off at the Railway station so handy for the train museum.
Regular service in clean comfortable electric buses.
C. A.
This park and ride is really convenient. Only £7 for two adult returns isn’t bad. Nice rest area with toilets and to purchase tickets too.
A.
Very convenient, you don't need to park in the centre of York (which is ridiculously expensive and hard) £10 for parking and a ride with several stops, you could use the bus ride as many times as you want during the day
M. M.
A great service to use. Easy to get to, every time I have been there is loads of spaces to park. The transport staff are friendly and the waiting area is clean. Busses are regular and time into the city is ok
M.
Absolutely great park and ride. £3.50 and buses every 15 minutes and about 10 mins to get to York train station. Really easy and convenient
D. K.
I went in my Campervan and parked in the allocated area for such. Had to be back by 8pm, last bus. Unfortunately we could not stay in the car park overnight, this is a shame as I am sure if the council charged a couple of pound it would be full all the time. Put an elsan point in and a water tap and charge a fiver.
C. J.
It makes so much sense to use a park and ride , easy to find , loads of parking spaces and is safe, for 2 adults and a child it was £7 return, children travel free up to 4 children I think it is so cost wise it's a no brainer , it takes the stress out of a day trip on worrying where to park ..... with very regular busses that are clean ,what is not to like ? I think more towns should do this
g. T.
Very good service. So much better than trying to find a parking space in York. Super easy access and very regular buses in to York. £3pp return well worth it. Toilets and electric charge points, even separate parking for Campervan and motorhomes.
G. L.
Still as erratic as ever! Unfortunately because of the chronic traffic situation in York, I have to accept a 'bus'll turn up when it turns up' approach. Arrived 8:30am, wanting to get to the station for 9:15. I just missed a P&R bus - I had to wait 25 minutes for another! I got there 9: 20am.
Regrettably, driving into York may still be a quicker option!
S.
Very good, quite frequent busses (about every 20 minutes) loads of parking, but the last bus on a Saturday is at 8 and it shuts at 8:30.
E. K.
Stumbled across this on my visit to York and I’m soo glad I did. It really took away all the hassle that usually comes with parking.
You can park you car here all day get a bus that comes every 10 minutes for £3.30 and be in the centre in 15 minutes.
The bus stop is near Clifford tower and is in walking distance of the canal and other top attraction. Really impressed with this place.
P. F.
Good value for money, even better if you are a frequent traveller and you have a "York card" that you prepay bus journeys on it. Buses are at regular intervals during the day and well into the evenings
D. P.
Really good scheme, however, only given it 4 stars as it closes at around 8pm on a Saturday night. Meaning people wanting to do ghost walks, have a meal etc. cannot use it.
S. H.
Fantastic value for money. Simply park up. Pay for your bus ride with return fair and job done. :)
T. B.
There was a very long que to get on a bus. 3 full busses left before we could get on one. There was someone selling tickets so as soon as a bus arrived people could get on quickly.
A.
Great place, wait of about 10 min for bus, day return £3.50,,pay on bus,,excellent ,will deffo go again next time we go to York
J. H.
Great service, buses regular never had to wait. Well maintained car park and station
W. C.
Easily accessible, plenty of spaces. Amazed how full the buses were. Good rest room facility.
I. L.
Waiting for, and loading the bus, was a bit of a wait. But all in all better than trying to park in the centre of York.
Probably would recommend just getting the train though.
S. “. S. G.
This is the EASY way to go into York. Good friendly facilities at the P&R, easy ticketing, and Electric buses to take you into town
E. L.
Great park and ride, easy access for parking and getting into York was a breeze even during busy Christmas period.
K. P.
Convenient for A64, frequent fast and efficient. Saves hunting for available spaces in city centre. Electric buses.
J. S.
Easy access off A64, excellent parking facilities with regular bus service into York.
N. R.
Very busy due to Christmas Market there was too many people allowed on the bus, it was like being abroad packed like sardines. On the way back the bus was so full it didn't stop at any other stops
C. M.
It's great. Just off the A64. Ample car park. In the main building you can wait for the bus (they are.so frequent you won't wait long) they've got toilets as well. You can buy the ticket on the bus and this all you pay for. It is 10 minutes to town centre with a few strategic stops. Train museum, station etc. Terminus is the Clifford's Tower. A lot cheaper than parking in York and very convenient. Can't fault it
A. M.
Great service, easy way to get into the city centre without any hassle. Will use every time we go to York
L. B.
Very easy to find. Can pay contactless to get on bus. Lots of buses running was straight on bus going only waiting a few minutes to come back. Lots of parking spaces bus takes you right into middle of York will use again.
N. B.
Disappointed with the attitude presented by some drivers at times. Customer Service is an important part of this service, but not always evident.
K. T.

We used this facility to visit York, as I didn't fancy paying for city centre parking. The terminus is clean, accommodates plenty of passengers inside for bad weather (not many seats, though) well-maintained and pleasant toilets and baby change area, and ticket purchase consoles. I was disappointed these are commuter oriented: day visitors are best to pay on the bus. The manned ticket office wasn't open on a Saturday in early August. Buses clean and the journey to Rougier St (with a walk to the Minster and Yorbag, then to Jorvik at Coppergate via The Shambles) was quick and stress-free. On the way home we had a double-decker, which had nowhere to put our sole small, wheeled suitcase with our picnic remains in it. Trying to get that up the stairs was difficult, but we managed although it had to take up a seat. It wouldn't work for the elderly though. Generally: the price worked out fairly similar if convenience was taken into account with city centre parking (for which York Council make it very difficult to find a daily/hourly rate, focusing instead on local permits). 5+ hours at £2.70 per hour, navigating the city centre, finding a space, and clock watching, compared to £3.30 per person bus ticket and no worry about spaces or clock-watching made it an obvious choice, despite the walking involved. Lots of blue badge spaces at Park & Ride, too. Prices correct at August 2021.
C. H.
The best way to get into York or any city with a park and ride bus service
G. H.
First time we used this and we'll definitely use it again when going to York.
M. C.
A drove into York and paid a fortune to park for years before realising how good this alternative is. Lots of parking around the central hub where the buses arrive / leave and they run really frequently. Prices are keen and it's even more convenient now they finally take card payments on the bus.
Buses are basic but clean and comfortable enough for the short journeys they do. There's space for a couple of prams / a wheelchair usually.
We had a weird experience earlier in the year when there was traffic coming out of York. Our driver had to park up for 30 minutes to wait for someone else to come and take over as they were about to go over their hours, unavoidable on their part and I suspect it's a rare occurrence but unfortunately the buses still have to fight through the busy sections of road like everyone else.
D. P.
Big car park and regular buses into York (20 minutes ride). Free parking and the bus fare reasonable - the toilets were well kept - worst thing was the 20 minute ride.

Only 10 mins in to York and always plenty of parking spaces but be warned even if you are approaching the bus and its at departure time they will close the doors in your face. I understand they have a schedule to stick to but would waiting 2 extra seconds really make that much difference?

(Translated) Excellent parking space with bus transport to the center of York. Buses run frequently (4 to 5 times per hour) Point of attention: In the bus it is only possible to pay contactless. Not all Dutch cards are accepted. In an emergency, cash payment was also possible, but only after we had tried all the cards in vain.

(Translated) A clever case of not driving your car into the city. You pack, leave and go to the city bus that will take you to the right places in this beautiful city of York. There are even lockers for bicycles and charging stations for electric vehicles. More such places in every bigger city, please;). Nearby there is a market, university and an interesting bicycle path towards Selby.
