Reviews of Guy Lochhead - Body-Positive Personal Training & Weightlifting Coaching
K. K.
Guy is a wonderful personal trainer and very much caring and compassionate about working with me as an individual to achieve the goals I set myself. He focuses on the ways I prefer to work and I feel empowered to speak about the training that interests me as well as play and explore new ways of doing things too. I love weight training because it makes me feel strong in my body and also gives me a great sense of calm in my mind afterwards. We work very technically with the weights and develop these skills over a period of time so that every time a sequence improves and gets better and better. I am so appreciative to Guy for accepting me as I am, and not putting me in any boxes or telling me what I should be (or not) achieving or doing. It is very refreshing to feel so positive about myself every time I leave the gym after a training session, I really recommend Guy and welcome any further conversation if you'd like to hear more about my perspective of the sessions. Thank you Guy.

I've never quite fit in the gym. I have no desire to be a knuckle head or an inflated muscle sack.
My goals are around health, fitness, longevity, fun and a minimalist approach to fit in with a busy lifestlye (job, kids) where fitness isn't necessarily the number one goal.
Guy is very flexible and adapts himself to your style. He is extremely knowledgeable and has gone away many times to research things we've spoken about and come back with great tips and insights. I say this as a compliment, Guy knows a lot but nobody can know everything and he takes the time to learn and grow which is incredible and appreciated.
After the pandemic he reoriented his business model to be available more online which has been brilliant. I think of him as my online trainer, location doesn't really come into it (he does do local sessions in Bristol though).
Guy has helped me feel confident that I'm doing the right training for me, he listens and offers guidance and advice but is also happy to take direction. I feel confident that I have the right mix of what's best health & science wise but also what fits with my personality, motivates me, fits into my lifestyle.
The proof is in the pudding and the reality is, I am working out, keeping fit and becoming stronger on a daily basis and much more than I ever was in any other time of my life.
For me it was definitely "the right time" and a large part of that has been down to Guy, his listening and consultative approach and how he goes overboard.
I enjoy and look forward to talking to him and really appreciate his well researched, science based and highly personalised advice.
Highly recommended!

Before starting training, I had several worries. I had a number of recurring injuries and feared strength training would aggravate them. I also worried the atmosphere would be unwelcoming or macho or would be full of people who had been training for a long time.
However, both in personal training and in his gym classes, Guy created a judgement-free atmosphere where I felt welcomed. In the personal training he spent time asking me what I wanted to achieve and then helped me identify what to work on. He was always enthusiastic about my goals and encouraged my interest and questions.
When I started training my goals were to build strength and to develop fitness that I could use in other sports. I did some personal training sessions as well because I wanted a specific workout that would improve specific lifts and to prevent recurring injuries.
The personal training made an immediate difference and I doubled my deadlift personal best within a week as well as improving my bench technique. He worked out a routine that I can do regularly that is tailored to me and will help me with my sporting and life goals. As a result of my training I have noticed a big improvement in my running times and feel safer and stronger when playing sports and in my everyday life.

I’ve always been a bit on the heavy side and have had some bad experiences with personal trainers in the past where I felt more judged than encouraged. As a result I had a lot of concerns about whether doing personal training sessions would actually be about what’s right for me, rather than the typical focus on weight loss in an effort to try and mould me into a vision of what an ‘athlete’ should look like. But when I met Guy for a consultation my concerns immediately disappeared. What really struck me was how much space he gave to my own goals and my own definitions of what fitness looked like, and quite honestly I’d never felt more empowered undertaking a ‘fitness’ programme than right at that moment. Guy really took time to get to know me and understand what my goals were, his compassionate and supportive manner made me feel really at ease.
Throughout our sessions Guy consistently reflected back to me the goals that I stated at the start of the process, took the time to explain how the programme would support these goals, and I came away with a lot of knowledge of how training programmes work and what kinds of benefits different forms of exercise will bring (knowledge I’m still using to plan my exercise now).
One barrier that I had to strength training was my nervousness over doing squats and the feeling that my form was poor, so I often tried to avoid them. Guy gave me a range of specific exercises that would help build my glute strength as well as a variety of drills and movements to help my form and develop my confidence doing squats. I’m now much more confident and am squatting away happily in the gym on a regular basis!
I also saw a huge improvement in my upper body strength (which had previously been quite poor) and quite a substantial growth in muscle size in my upper body (lots of jackets no longer fit me!) By the end of the programme I found myself able to lift much heavier things than ever before, to the point where I was consistently surprising myself with how strong I had become, I remember going to lift a large heavy box and really bracing myself for the impact, to find I practically threw it in the air!
One of my favourite moments actually happened shortly after our training sessions came to an end, I attended a HIIT class run by Guy where we were using kettlebells. As a result of all the training we had done (LOTS of kettle bell swings/squats/bicep curls etc.) I was able to use a 20kg kettlebell for the whole hour session. I remember making eye contact with Guy at the end of the class and there was a moment where we both acknowledged how far I had come, and just how much stronger I was, it’s one of the proudest moments in my life to date.
If you’re looking for fun sessions that are thoroughly tailored to you and your goals, with a compassionate trainer who really knows his stuff – Guy’s the one!

I can't recommend Guy for personal training enough. He is extremely knowledgeable about all things fitness and body, and shares this knowledge in a way that isn't at all patronising. His experience in teaching a range of age groups demonstrates this skill.
His practice is totally non-judgemental and inclusive, and the training space he provides is comfortable and bright. This combines to make a safe and trusting space to practice movement.
Lastly, what sets Guy apart is that he really, honestly listens to your needs, and he is ready to come along and learn with you.

I would recommend Guy to anyone looking for a body-positive, non judgemental coach. As a very non athletic person, I was nervous when I started working with Guy but he never makes you feel as though you should know something. He is definitely not the ‘shouty’ kind of coach, which is what I was looking for. I was able to focus on exercises that I struggled with and made improvements pretty speedily. I was able to ask lots of questions and gained real understanding about what I was doing and the benefits. I have ended up feeling stronger and able to set new goals for future progressed, armed with lots of new knowledge.

I was always put off getting stronger by pseudo-military boot camps aimed at getting me into "that bikini" and gyms with cynical subscriptions and shaming cultures; I felt too old, too female and yet too high in self-esteem to want to enter those spaces. I wanted a body-positive and non-judgemental trainer who knew their stuff.
I love that Guy offers evidence-based workouts that are completely focused on meaningful functional goals for me, like digging my allotment. He also coached me during nine months of pregnancy and I was able to maintain strenth and mobility safely and effectively throughout and never experienced any of the back, hip or pelvic floor issues that are so common perinatally; when I then needed to adapt my training schedule around a baby, he was incredibly flexible.
Guy clearly puts a lot of time into personalising workouts for me and is genuinely curious about how I experience them; he seems to thrive on working around any "stuckness" and is realistic and adaptable so that I can and want to stick with my workouts. I trust him completely. More importantly, I laugh a lot and enjoy his sessions.

Guy is a _great_ personal trainer. He listens to your goals,, is thoughtful in his approach to achieving them and friendly to boot. His enthusiasm for and knowledge of fitness is second to none. If you’re thinking about getting a PT, Guy is your man!

Thank you so much for everything you have helped me achieve over the last 8 weeks. I feel so much fitter and stronger. You’ve made exercise fun for me rather than just an activity I feel that I need to do. It’s been incredible to see how much strength I’ve gained. When we started I had never deadlifted and I couldn’t squat. Now I can deadlift over my body weight and squat with 22.5kg, and I'm sure I will just continue to get stronger. Being a small woman and gaining strength in this way has made me feel a lot more capable in my day to day life, and also helps challenge the notion that small women can't weight lift. Before training with you I was nervous to enter the free weights section of the gym as it seemed to be full of bulky guys, but now I realise that weight training is not just for men who want to get as big as possible. Anyone can benefit from lifting heavy weights.

Had Guy as a PT for a while last year. He was super helpful and friendly, knowledgeable, and makes fitness and training really accessible. Works with you to help you achieve your goals and is really enthusiastic, always going the extra mile. Just an all round nice bloke.

Guy is a very thoughtful, considered and attentive coach. He managed to work out exactly what help and advice I needed so that I could learn to deadlift... he was spot on, and it really worked. I think he did this through careful observation and a thorough knowledge of all things muscles. Thanks Guy!

I would recommend Guy to anyone wishing to improve their strength and conditioning, whether you are a complete novice or someone looking to improve their technique. If he can get me lifting, then he can get anyone lifting!
