The portrait course was an excellent balance between theory and hands on. There was also a mine of useful information on where to hire or buy kit from. We also modelled for each other which was a useful experience of being the other side of the camera, something that photographers tend to avoid. While the tutor was a big name in photography he made the students the star of the show.

Unforgettable lessons learnt. On day 1 we were taught, and then shot Portrait photography techniques. After 4 intense days I felt comfortable to capture pictures I was personally proud of. It is a great experience for anyone who would like to be tutored, and step up their skills.

Just took the beginner's course over the weekend and really enjoyed it. I had no previous experience with photography beyond auto mode, but now I feel a lot more confident in the basics and excited to use my camera more. Our teacher, Holger, was knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging. Can't wait to come back for the intermediate course!

I just completed the full time 10-week Professional Photography Course which is extremely hands-on while covering all required theory & underpinning knowledge to suit all learning styles.
The program is well-written, well-structured and taught me so many aspects of photography skill & business that I didn't even know I needed to know. I have been focused on photography for 5+ years and I see so much personal growth during this program to help take me to the next level,.
I loved everything about this Photography School, the program, the team of teachers, the location and Holger is an inspirational to all and a great person! Highly recommended.

I attended the 4 day Foundation Photography Course with Holger and it was fantastic. The course exceeded my expectations and after years of confusion, the mist was finally lifted and I am now really excited to be able to use my camera creatively on Manual Mode. Holger was exceptionally knowledgeable, patient and encouraging - a great teacher and I am looking forward to taking further courses with LIOP. I would strongly recommend this course.

I had an amazing experience at London Institute of photography. The workshop was so very well organised. A great insight for a complete amateur and for a beginner in photography. Holger is an incredible teacher who made the concepts of photography so easy to understand. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would be looking for further options in near future. I would also highly recommend this course to anyone who wish to pursue this course and get into professional photography.

I took professional photography course. It was a great experience. I enjoyed and learned a lot during the course. It is not only about theory, which I find really important, but a balanced mixture of technical and theoretical information. All the assignments and projects we did during the course helped me a lot to gain confidence in my own skills. All of the teachers are well experienced professional photographers. I highly recommend this course to anyone wishing to enhance photography skills.

I flew over to London for this course as I live in a french speaking country and preferred learning in english. I was unsure of what to expect at first, however once the course started Holger, the Founder and Director of LIOP went above all my expectations.
Extremely clear instructions and guidance on the weekend beginners course and we moved along at a great pace. Class size was extremely small only two in a class although they can go up to 6 people if I'm not mistaken.
I thoroughly recommend LIoP to anyone looking to broaden there knowledge of photography, Holger and team are very experienced and have years of experience as professional photographers.
I look forward to returning for the intermediate course as soon as I find the time!

I recently attended the Beginners Photography Course at the LIoP and, what can I say, it was brilliant.
Holger describes and explains the fundamentals of photography and how that translates onto your own camera so that you understand how to have full control and take fantastic photographs.
The balance of theory and practical learning is perfect. I would recommend this course in a heartbeat.

Taking part in the Professional Photography Course at London Institute of Photography was a fantastic experience. Great teachers- expert, kind and patient, great material and great facilities. It's a unique place to study with emphasis on the practical backed up with mentorship sessions designed to take you on a personal journey of discovery. Really well structured and flawlessly executed. Can't recommend this course highly enough. Thanks guys. :)

I highly recommend if you are thinking about doing a course in photography to start here. I have done the intermediate Course. The class size is limited to 8 students which is really nice due to the personal attention each student gets from the instructor. Holger really encouraged us to explore things that inspired us and our own personal creativity simultaneously teaching us the technical aspects of producing great images. I can't wait to sign up for more courses and will be doing the Professional Course in the future.

I have attended the Intermediate Photography course and it was one of the best experiences I've had with photo classes. Our teacher was Holger Pooten who is also the founder of LIop - he gave a lot of inspiration and shared his own techniques with the group. A big part of the class was reviewing and deconstructing famous photographs which was very interesting because you learn so much in this process! We also had lots of practice sessions and the ability to show our photographs and get Holger's opinion on what worked and what didn't. I'm looking forward to do more classes with LIop and would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to take their photography to the next level.

The 2 day beginners course is brilliant! You will learn everything you need to know about photography in general as well as, and most importantly, about your camera. Settings, features, effects that you can achieve by using the correct strings etc. Our teacher Jenni was fantastic too, she made learning a lot of fun. If you're a beginner trying to figure out how to take better pictures with your camera look no further than the London institute of photography!

After taking the introductory course with Holger all I can say is I am so glad I chose the LIoP for my first introduction to photography! So often when you are learning from someone as respected and experienced in an industry, they might not be the best teachers. Not so with Holger! He was the most patient and engaging teacher I could have asked for. The classes were a really nice mix of theory and then practice (right away after the theory which is so important) - and the location of the school gives a really nice opportunity to go out and get creative taking photos. Also the class sizes are really small so you get really personal attention. I am so thankful I found this course and would urge anyone interested in venturing into photography for the first time to go for it!

I've just taken the Beginners Photography Course with Holger and can't stop raving about it - worth every penny! I wasn't sure how much I could realistically learn in two days but I was in for a surprise.
Holger is a great teacher and his experience very evident. He explains everything so simply, with practical examples and with such patience. After just two days I am so much more confident with my camera - the settings and features aren't alien anymore!
I would recommend Holger and the London Institute of Photography to anyone - in fact I already have...

I took the Complete Foundation course over two weekends. My housemate had taken two taster courses and was a huge fan of the classes. The first weekend was the beginner’s course taught by Lorna. She is an enthusiastic and very knowledgeable teacher. The second week was the intermediate course taught by Holger, the founder of LIoP. He is very passionate about mentorship and genuinely cares about the success of his students. All the teachers at LIoP have years of industry experience and are able to provide insight into what a career in photography would look like.
The Complete Foundations course is great if you want to learn about the basics of photography, how to use your camera, and how to develop an eye for images. The course is comprehensive and well-paced. The classes are small so you get a good amount of one-on-one time with the teachers if you have questions. One of my favourite parts of this course is going out to take photos and having these teachers, with years of industry experience, provide a critical eye to your photos and give suggestions and input into how you can improve your technique or image composition.
This course is an excellent introduction into the realm of photography. It has given me the confidence to know how to take the photos I want to take. The school also hosts talks and events which I look forward to checking out in the future.
A. F.
I've always liked photography but didn't know the first thing about how to shoot really great pictures. The beginners course was fantastic. You learn all the essentials about aperture, shutter speeds, focus etc whilst also learning what all those settings do on your camera. I've finished the course feeling way more confident and excited to get practising.
K. G.
Holger is an excellent photographer and teacher. He inspired me immensely during my Beginner's and Intermediate courses on Photography. He provides a lot of practical information and valuable feedback during his courses. I can't recommend him enough!
L. R.
I took a long time researching the best course (and my first course) in Photography. I was looking for something that would give me a good understanding of Lighting and I came away with so much more than i expected.
Great communication pre booking to determine if the course was right for what i wanted. The course itself (4 day Fashion Photography Module) was a great balance of creativity and technical detail. And really fun! Holger the tutor, and the supporting team (on Shoot day) are incredibly helpful and knowledgable and i came away inspired and equipped with lots of new skills and outlooks as a photographer.
I highly recommend the LIoP if you really wanted to enhance your skills as a photographer, regardless of level.

I recently completed the Professional Photography Course (PPC) at LIoP, and I highly recommend this course. The level of teaching by professional and accomplished photographers is outstanding, the curriculum and modules offered are very well thought through and executed. I have learnt an enormous amount and feel very grateful for the experience I received and the dedication and openness from all the teachers on the course. It exceeded my expectations and I am so happy in hindsight that I chose this course over the others I was considering. I did the one-day-a-week Friday course which I highly recommend, it moves at a nice pace and allows you time each week to digest what you've learned and practice before the next session.
D. B.
Took the Lightroom course this past weekend and it was an excellent and much-needed crash course during which, for me, crucially introduced some really helpful principles about file management and workflow that I will be putting into use straight away. The founder of the school and our trainer at the weekend, Holger Pooten, clearly knows his stuff and is very knowledgeable not only about the technical aspects required to be a photographer, but also has a firm grasp of the history of photography and encourages students to think not only technically but artistically. Highly recommended!
A.
Attended a two-day beginners photography course led by Jenny. Developed knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals and gained confidence in applying these skills in practice.Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the course, particularly the generous guidance and imparted wisdom of our highly competent instructor. Highly recommend to others and looking forward to attending more classes in the future.

My wife bought me a voucher for the Beginner's Course and I must admit that I thought I would be out of my depth even for that! Alas not. I loved the course, as much for Holger having a passion for sharing his knowledge and skills with people who want to do more with their cameras. I learned so much and it has given me a new enthusiasm for getting out and photographing more. There was a good balance between classroom and practical. I feel so much more confident in using my camera in full manual mode.
B. R.
I took the Professional Photography Course during 10 weeks, and it was the most interesting and complete course I could find in London. All of the teachers had their own experiences, which made every week completely different from the others. I would recommend the LIoP to anyone who wants to learn photography with a lot of possibilities to get your work reviewed/make improvements.
G. G.
I really couldn't recommend the London Institute Of Photography enough. My photographic skills have improved massively since I began studying with them. Holger is an amazing teacher he is very easy to get along with and has a vast pool of knowledge from which to help you learn. Your money will be well spent here.
S. H.
My first visit to the London Institute of Photography has been great. Holger reviewed my photo stories and showed me new ways to re-group my photos using a new common theme. This made the stories much more interesting. He also gave me very helpful feedback about my photographic style and developing my brand. Holger is an experienced commercial photographer but he's an exceptional teacher too and I'm looking forward to taking additional courses in 2016.
S. T.
LIoP is brilliant, I’ve done 2 short courses, mastering depth of field and mastering manual mode, they were both super informative and helpful, I took so much away that I can use instantly to improve my photography. Holger was so great, easy to understand in his teaching and so generous with continued help and guidance! 5* top recommendation from me, even got my housemate to sign up for a weekend course!!

I am really happy to have done the Profesional Photography Course in LIOP, which I highly recommend to those who are interested in going into photography. The different modules are very well-structured and all the teachers are really close and helpful with the students , and above all they are great professionals. A remarkable experience!

This is was my first ever photography workshop, so I didn't know what to expect. Holger however exceeded my expectations - he is very eloquent, clear in explanations & tips and overall a great instructor. Can't get any better than that. There was a short intro on the LIoP website and their various courses, blog, events and monthly challenges. The first couple of hours in the LIoP office were dedicated to explaining depth of field with on-hand camera demonstrations (he had each of us take out or cameras to explain about sensors and aperture) and trying out settings for shallow/great DOF. The last 40 minutes or so we all went out to Spitalfields Market (btw, highly recommend for a bite after the course is over!) to shoot individually using the tecniques we had just learned. Eventually he would come find us to see our progress and comment our work so far. Luckily there were only 5 of us that morning so Holger was able to dedicate a fair amount of time to each of us. So, great course for beginners, or whoever would like to develop their photography skills, or catch up after some time one hasn't used their camera in a while. Really appreciated what this course has taught me. If I lived in London I would definitely go back for more.
J. H.
I highly recommend the LioP! It has a unique and rather creative approach. I had a lesson with Holger who was very professional and his teaching was superb. It's not just about learning the techniques and shooting, but how to use them creatively and see things differently. I learnt a great deal and he offered fantastic tips on photography. He boosted my confidence in photography and I found his course incredibly useful and inspiring. As a secondary school art teacher he offered great tips and artist examples which I could use in my own teaching. I was able to ask lots of questions and get helpful feedback. I would certainly go back again to learn other new things! Thanks for unleashing my potential.

Updated Review: 30/4/2018
Following completion of the excellent Professional Photographers Course at LIoP I returned to make use of their One To One training option. This was to review and develop skills learnt during the Web Design module, (also available as a stand-alone option). The 2 hour session I had proved invaluable. It allowed me to review the progress made to date on my website construction with an industry expert, giving me the opportunity to make improvements to maximise its efficacy both as a photographer and on the technical aspects of web design. I left confident in the skills I had already acquired and knowing the additional support would help benefit my progress that bit further. I even got a free 30 mins with the Director who was kind enough to offer his photographic expertise also. First class!
Having had my Canon SLR for 2 years on ‘Auto Focus’ I wanted to learn more about the theory and creative process of capturing and creating images through my perspective.
The Beginners Photography Course at the London Institute of Photography offers the ideal balance of theory and practical, in group sizes kept small to facilitate adequate time for understanding, asking questions and learning immediately usable skills; it offers what every photographer needs.
The course material was well put together and very well delivered by Joana, an knowledgable yet personable industry professional who made initially complex aspects of photography seem less so.
I’ll definitely do the Intermediate Course in the future and will request to do so when Joanna is the tutor. I’ll also be doing the Lightroom Software Course also.

I would recommend 100% LIoP to any one who wants to learn photography in its overall. You will study all aspects of photography and discover in which fields you want to specialized. That is the most important if you want to become a professional photographer. Moreover you will be surrounded by very good teachers and an amazing director Holger Pooten. Indeed Holger is very passionate and is always attentive to his students. I have to say that he is by far one of the best teacher I've ever had.
H. B. C.
The foundation course has completely changed the way I create my photography, giving me the tools to design the story I want to tell. I feel much more confident with both the concepts and the technicalities, and I’m looking forward to upping my game to pro level over time.
Will be booking the Professional Photography course. Thanks to Holger and Lorna for a great first experience of LIoP!

I am an amateur self taught photographer with very little experience. I signed up for the fashion photography course, not sure what to expect, but I'm glad to say I was pleasantly surprised! I feel like I've learned so much in such a short period of time. Holger isn't just a talented and very inspiring artist, but also a magnificent teacher. I found him to be patient, helpful, and very pleasant. The team working with Holger were a delight to say the least. I was an absolute wreck on the day of the final shoot but the whole team were very supportive and re assuring not to mention professional. The whole experience was just an amazing one and I would recommend it to anyone! I am now signing up to the 10 week course knowing I will be in good hands.

I’ve just completed the Professional Photography Course and can not recommend the LIoP enough! The course is well structured delivering real practical experience, taught by talented professionals. I felt continually supported and encouraged by Holger and the team and met a great network of new friends. Thank you!

I took the beginners course last weekend and really loved it. I will never use automatic modes again. Joana was passionate about photography and very patient when it came to all our questions. The mixture of practical, theory and photography history was well balanced. The course was great value for money and the intimate class sizes and space made for an excellent learning environment. I look forward to attending the intermediate course once I have mastered the basics.

I was looking for a full professional course I could also connect with on an artistic level and that wasn't easy to find.
LIoP had it all and I couldn't recommend this course enough whether you want to arm yourself with the technical knowledge and confidence to become a professional photographer or develop your own artistic work. The mentoring sessions were a real bonus as was the contact with other student's work an interesting component of the course.
The fact that Holger was promptly available to kindly reply to any question was very reassuring.
Holger's warm welcome, patience, generosity, knowledge of the industry and spot on comments were truly invaluable. Fast paced course but totally worth it!

Hey people! I took the professional photography course at LIoP, it is an intense, hands-on course and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to explore and experiment with different types of photography, spend time with their camera, learn about studio lighting and equipment and to anyone who wants to get an idea of how the photography business world works.
For me however, the most important part of the whole experience was the people - knowledgable experienced professionals willing to give you constructive feedback at any point. Lots of inspiration and a great community to be part of!
Enjoy!
L. Q.
Took the weekend beginners course & it was absolutely fantastic. I think the fact that I booked onto the next level Intermediate course while walking home speaks volumes! Holger breaks photography down into easy-to-understand parts & explains everything so it makes sense. You might know about ISO or Aperture, but Holger explains why they impact photos & the logic behind how they interact. All this is done in a friendly & simple way. If you are looking for an introduction course, no matter what level you will learn something. Our class had a beginner with a new camera right up to a person who's been self taught & already snapping for several years. Just book it!
S. T.
I attended the beginners and intermediate courses with the LIoP and found them both an excellent introduction to learning the basics and helping develop your own style. The small classroom sizes, and time spent doing practical shoots with reviews after is a great format, and there was a lot of knowledge packed into the four day course.
B. M.
Hello! I attended 2 courses at the London Institute of Photography (Complete Foundation Photography Course and Studio Fashion Photography Course). After completing the courses, I have the most positive experience and I can recommend everyone interested in the world of photography. Theoretical and practical teaching is interesting, proactive and full of challenges. The most important thing is that you learn about all the elements of photography. After that, your camera will always be in Manual mode. In LIoP you can forget the boredom while listening to the theoretical part of the training. Every detail and part of the lesson is perfectly planned. Lecturers are top photographers with whom you will not be at a distance - they treat you as a member of a family. In LIoP we are all one big family of photo lovers. That's why many thanks to Holger Pooten and Katerina! The final part of the course was in a professional photo studio. Every student had a photo set with a professional model, stylist, makeup artist and hairdresser. Since I spent most of my business life in the TV studio, I can say that the last part of the course on the photo set is extremely professionally designed. It is not imitation of similar situations, it is a serious story that has a beginning and an end. I recommend all courses in LIoP and I know you will not make a mistake.

hello and welcome to this review for the London institute of photography, foundation 4 day course which i attended on the 15th April to the 18th 2019
the course is based in brick lane in the truman brewery building which has many floors and hosts this course which i attended, the course is chaired by jenny and holger, who are both professional photographers from Germany.
the course was very well produced and put together in a professional manor with plenty of content and lots to learn , i loved that i was able to learn everything with my own camera , the instructors went through the various topics with clear and easy to follow instructions, i loved the course and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn manual modes or a better understanding of using a DSLR camera, the other students were very good and i loved the location also being close to Liverpool street and Algate east.
I also loved that we could go on location and shoot various London attractions and locations with our camera , as there was a good balance between classroom and location photography.
The course content was very good and ill never forget what ive learned
, the only addition i could think of is if jenny and holger would also put a small introduction to flash and backlit photography as a intro for future students
apart from that 100% recommended and a great photographic course, many thanks to you both.
J. P.
I've loved the photography taster courses I've done at the London Institute of Photography. The tutors are so friendly and knowledgeable and I really appreciated the way in which the groups were small and informal so you could ask a lot of questions and have some good discussions. I thought the practice element of going out into Spitalfields/ Brick Lane area during the workshop was brilliant as it's such a fascinating part of London and being able to practice what we'd just learnt was fantastic. Thank you for all your help. Jenny
K. S.
I was very impressed with the 'mastering manual focus' taster course. Holger has a great blend of commercial, conceptual and academic experience which allowed him to explain things clearly and thoroughly, and with great visual aids to boot (the slide deck/pdf is sent to you after the class too). The class is great value for money and I was lucky enough to book last minute but be the only one there that afternoon (I think there can be up to around 8 people), so I feel particularly fortunate to have had 1:1 tuition! After learning the basics in the classroom we did a few test shots and then finished the afternoon with some practice in Spitalfields Market, so no matter what your style of learning you're bound to take something from the experience. I'll be attending further courses and talks here and would highly recommend LIoP.
C. P.
Holger is an amazingly fresh, honest, professional, talented teacher and photographer. He know's exactly what you need and want as a student of photography and he provides both inspiration and honesty in equal measure. He challenges your thinking, your style, your perspective and it is brilliant. A year after completing a 6 month photography course I scheduled a portfolio consultation with Holger and I can say it was one of the best hours of my professional development. I walked away with a confidence in the work I was producing, but also with an eagerness to explore and challenge myself even further in my chosen area of photography. I cannot recommend Holger highly enough and I will be back to complete more of his courses in the future.
L. L.
The most effective and inspiring teacher I have come across in 4 years of Photography and various courses. Holger is incredibly knowledgeable, but also extremely capable of making the complex clear through explanations and practical exercises. I would fully recommend any course taught by Holger!
D. F.
A really great course - it was very well taught and went into lots of detail. We had a range of theory and practical elements in the course. I would highly recommend the beginners course to anyone looking to get a foundational understanding of digital photography. I hope to go back for the intermediate course soon!
K. M.
I have recently completed the one day a week Professional Photography course (PPC) at LioP and can't recommend it highly enough. The level of teaching from both Holger and his specialist tutors is unparalleled. Receiving advice from professionals at the top of their field was invaluable in advancing my own skills. The mentoring sessions encouraged me to explore the boundaries of my creativity in a supportive environment with advice from both Holger and my wonderful classmates. When I began the course I was a keen amateur looking to up my game both technically and creatively. Eight months later I have been taken very far away from my original comfort zone! The result is a defined style, a professional website, an impressive (they tell me!) portfolio and my work is about to be included in two exhibitions. I would never have dreamed that any of this was possible but here we are. If I could do it all again, I would. Thank you!
M. L.
I have just finished the Flexible Professional Photography course, completed over 9 months. It was a great option to fit around a full time career job. The modules were very interesting and informative, e.g. a great insight and hands on experience with using studio lighting. The main tutor is very attentive. Time is dedicated to reviewing your images and plenty of valid constructive feedback. I trust his opinion. I am delighted that I chose to invest my time and money with the London Institute of Photography to pursue and complete the course. I am very happy. Having finished the course, I am still part of the community and know that any queries or issues I may have in pursuing a career in photography I will still have the support of LIoP. Having completed the course over the maximum period I've had the privilege of meeting other photographers on the different modules and their varying stages of the programme, and bounced ideas off each other at the mentoring sessions, and the occasional weekend gallery visit. The overall experience was just great, gave me confidence in my own skills and a potential platform to showcase my work with an up and coming exhibition. Thank you LIoP!
C. L.
I thoroughly enjoyed and learned a lot on the Beginners Course. It very much achieved the aim of allowing me to use my camera’s manual settings with confidence. Jenny was great, even taking an interest in the style of photography I am interested in. Highly recommended.
S. E.
My still life photography short course with LIoP was absolutely amazing. Liz was the greatest teacher I came across and I've done a lot of short courses in photography in the past in the US and Australia. Liz was very professional, punctual, had a great hands on structure for the course, all my questions was answered and I feel much more confident now in a studio environment. I highly recommend the still life course with LIoP :)
R. E.
The Fashion Photography course at The London Institute of Photography is a comprehensive and well thought out short course. The course gives you key theories, processes and photographic information in a contextualised and practical manner. You are constantly learning and applying these methodologies from the first day up until your final shoot. A truly enjoyable and worth while experience that I would recommend to others.
P. K.
Holger is a great photographer and an even better teacher! Super patient, very thorough and always happy to answer the most basic questions in detail. I always appreciated Holger's opinion more than my other teachers because his feedback was always honest and constructive. He's also a lovely person and I've found him to be really approachable and helpful long after I finished my courses with him :-)
G. G.
I was very pleasantly surprised by my experience at LIoP. It was quite random that I decided to book a course there - no one had recommended it to me, so I didn't know what to expect. Holger is a very good teacher - engaging, easy-to-follow and clearly very knowledgable. I chose the Mastering Light taster course, and learnt a lot in the three hours. I would definitely consider going back for another course, and will recommend Holger and his classes to others.
C. W.
This is a course 100% worth investing in. You will not regret it. I attended the beginners course and loved every minute. The course material was clear and well thought through. The teacher (Jenny Endom) was first rate, highly engaging and knowledgeable. The small group size meant everyone got some one on one time with the teacher while out and about too. The location, in the heart of Brick Lane, offered a visual feast to hone our new found skills in - and ensured we didn't go hungry. Thanks to the LIoP, not only do I feel really confident picking up my DSLR, but I also walked away with a number of really cool shots worthy of a Christmas present for loved ones. I will be back for more.
D. E.
Loved the fact it was a small group, enabled everyone to have a voice, listened and attended to.
Holger was great at simplifying the manual exposure techniques and his visual diagrams and explained scenarios greatly aided understanding. Within a couple of hours we were able to put the theory into practice (on the streets) where I saw an immediate improvement in handling the settings and manipulating light.
The following day I was out practising and smashed it! OK, confident with noticeable improvement and feel the the consistency is achievable. 😊
Thank you. It was a great course, hoping to return soon and wouldn't hesitate to encourage others to attend LIoP.
G. H.
I would recommend the Professional Photography course to anyone who is seriously considering Photography as a profession but lacks the confidence, experience or portfolio they need to kick start their career. Alternatively, the individual courses are also a great option for any photographers who are clear about the genre they wish to specialise in. What I love most about LIOP is the strong emphasis it places on teaching the techniques and skills needed to improve as a photographer. I left the course with many fond memories, new friendships and networking opportunities with LIOP graduates and tutors alike.
S. T.
A course that takes the hand brake off your camera. I've loved photography for years and whilst I think I have a pretty good eye for a shot, when it comes to the technical side, especially apertures, shutter speeds etc. it's always been absolute guess work. I took the beginners course and it was brilliant. In two days I learnt more about the potential and workings of my camera than I have in six years of owning it. I still have much to learn, but the course has given me the confidence and inspiration to consign those automatic and semi automatic settings to the bin and go full on manual mode. If you want to unlock the potential of your photography and your camera I can't recommend this course highly enough.
s. a.
Holger is a great teacher and listens carefully before giving clear advices. He has a great knowledge of photography and art in general and I founded the porfolio review really useful. I look forward to do another one after I add new elements to the series I am currently working on.
C. A.
Go LIoP! Seriously exceeded all my expectations! Holger is a great photographer, teacher and mentor. He brings professional, up to date expertise and inspires you to dare and realize your full potential as a photographer. The "Professional Photography Course" had me equally or even more skilled and ready for the industry compared to my peers who studied BA Photography at University. LIoP has an industry driven approach - from day 1 you will be working on your portfolio, shooting in studios / on location and post-production. The content at LIoP is relevant, creative, hands-on and always taught by working professionals from the industry. I would highly recommend this school. Thank You Holger! :D

Highly recommend

Having signed up for the January 2018 Photoshop for Photographers course at LIoP, I cannot recommend this course enough.
Our trainer Joana Saramago is a hugely experienced photographer, designer and retouch professional who is able to relay both the concepts and practical application of this photo editing software in a super efficient, clear and engaging way.
So if you are new to Photoshop this course will give you a strong foundation preparing you for the next level on your image editing journey. Thank you LIoP and Joana!

Holger Pooten is an excellent instructor. I took a Photoshop course and participated in a Career Coaching workshop led by Holger. He did a brilliant job as a teacher as well as in the take-home materials he had prepared for the participants. He was able to convey a lot of useful and practical information in the Photoshop course and I learned a lot. The Career Coaching workshop was tremendously useful. One of the many highlights of the workshop was preparing and presenting your own portfolio. As I am now in the middle of implementing a career change this workshop was encouraging and practical. Holger brings many relevant examples from his day to day practice as a professional. I recommend Holger very highly as an instructor and coach.

I went on the depth of field course last week, a three hour taster course.. There were six of us. Holger was our teacher. He was very patient and took a lot of time and trouble to see that each of us knew what we were doing. We had time at Spitalfields Market to take some photos to show a shallow or deep depth of field using the techniques we had just been taught. Later that afternoon we were sent all the notes that we had covered in class. I shall definitely be doing more courses here. Very highly recommended.

I absolutely loved the foundation course and wish I had it in my life for a little longer! After my first day of the course, I woke up at 6am and couldn't get back to sleep because I was so excited for day 2... haha.
I learnt loads and feel I now have all the tools to go away and really improve my photography. Cat was a great teacher who conveyed ideas in a really clear way. One of the unexpected things I loved about the course was analysing what made the work of famous photographers so good. Cat's passion for photography really came across in these discussions and helped to inspire. She really knows her stuff!

Attended a course last week , over 4 evenings about Lightroom. I am only an amateur photographer with no previous knowledge of LR I came away feeling confident to use it the course was very well delivered. I recommend it highly. I shall certainly be attending other courses here in the future

I attended a Fashion Photography course at LIoP and I am very glad how much I learnt. Holger has real passion for photography and brilliant teaching approach. Highly recommend the courses to anyone who want to improve their skills and knowledge in photography.

Got their beginner's course from Groupon for £69 for 2 days (10am to 4pm).
Remarks:
- great and patient teacher Eliska. Simplifies the topics and very honest on her photography knowledge
- great teacher-student ratio (1:5) with free hot drinks
- best thing was I was able to learn how to shoot fully auto in 2 days. Not yet perfect but is already an accomplishment for me. (Note: i have tried another photography course from Groupon but I learned more from this course and I can shoot manual now)

I completed the Foundation Course last week - I absolutely loved it, and have learnt so so much. Before the course I had played with the semi-auto modes (and found they didn’t always do what I thought I had wanted) – now I am on full-Manual mode and really enjoying it. I’ve taken a few decent pictures, in difficult lighting, which I am pleased with, too.
I really enjoyed the challenges, too. The architecture work was something I would never have done before, and while I am not planning on doing it again I did enjoy the challenge. Street portraiture, which I did for one of the projects, was completely new to me and it is something I would never have considered before. But I really loved it! It has given me a lot of confidence, and a whole load of ideas for projects that I would like to work on into the future, too.
This is a great course, and very helpful and knowledgeable trainers. They did a great job of showing me how to use my camera, for explaining how the camera works, for giving me the confidence to use it, and for giving me the inspiration and challenge to try something new.

I was fortunate enough to get Holger as my teacher on a career coaching course. I was immediately inspired by him and his portfolio and experience. Holger has the ability to teach everyone as an individual according to their level and aims in a group situation. He is patient and managed to stay on track with what we were suppose to be focusing on without going off topic. Holger has continued to help me long after the course, he is very approachable and I hope to be taught by him again!

I had my portfolio reviewed by Holger and I am very glad I went for the session.
I took 53 images with me and we went through all. Holger showed me things I could do in lightroom to improve the images. He also picked up on my style of photography and gave me advice on how I could make things work career wise; I found that extremely helpful because it was not something I had thought of and I had been wondering how I was going to make my work stand out.
I was able to ask all the questions I had and I left feeling very confident; I will definitely be attending more portfolio review sessions in the future and highly recommend them.

Thanks to Holger I now have some idea how my Canon camera works on the manual settings. The style was incredibly relaxed and we learned a great deal about basic lighting techniques. It has certainly made me want to do more. Highly recommended

If I could give LIOP 6+ Stars, I would! Enthusiastic & knowledgable team of teachers who specialise in specific photography topics. Each class includes both theory & practical with some classes having on-location sessions for further practise. I highly recommend this school for anyone looking to grow their photography skills for fun or professionally, Holger and the team are amazing.

Had two days of Holger to myself on the Lightroom course and got huge value from it. We covered all the course content and I'm much happier in Lightroom now but what took it up to the next level was when we delved into Art and Photography theory. Look forward to working with him again.

Genuinely a fantastic experience. All of the tutors at the school are working professionals in photography and you can tell. I began the course barely knowing how to switch on my camera and having completed the PPC, I’m now taking pictures I’m really proud of - can’t recommend the school enough. Thanks to all involved.

I took the completed foundation course and now can shoot with full manual mode which I didn't expect I can do after 4 days of class (actually picked it up just after the 2 days beginners course, thanks Joana!). Also done the photography career course too, learnt a lot from the insider's perspective, very interesting!

I took the Mastering Depth of Field taster course and found it to be such a good use of time to really understand the fundamentals of working with shallow and great depth of field. The teacher was really knowledgeable and even better, shared fantastic resources with us afterwards for us to continue to be able to work through this important aspect of photography.

I have completed a couple of courses now at LIOP and more recently the Smartphone and Social Media course. I always find the team really friendly and they make me feel completely comfortable. They really know their stuff and give you lots of information in a well thought out, easy to understand, constructive manner. There's lots of hands-on practice and time to ask questions. I only wish I could do a course every month with them.

I took the beginners course today & I really loved it. Holger was a very good teacher, many thanks for making me understand my DSLR. Highly recommended!
L. G.
Holger Pooten is a great teacher as well as a highly creative and amazing photographer. I have attended three courses run by Holger and he is very approachable and patient and has a way of getting the best out of everyone in his classes.

I found the beginners course to be a perfect and mix of technical and theoretical information. Our teacher was incredibly knowledgable and patient, with a eye for capturing our enthusiasm. I would recommend this course 100% to anyone wanting to shoot on manual mode.
K. C.
I took the complete foundation course and had a great experience. Perfect mix of theory, examples and getting out and practising. I'm leaving with a great understanding of the basics of photography and some fantastic collateral. Would highly recommend.
C. M.
I was lucky enough to have Holger all to myself as I was the only participant that day. He was very friendly and put me at me ease straight away.
The content and delivery of the course were both clear and thorough. I came away feeling confident that I can now take photographs manually and actually know what I am doing.
I highly recommend it.

LIoP is a fantastic school for everyone with love for photography. Holger the director and the other teachers are very inspiring and you find yourself in a community of like-minded people. I can only recommend, thanks for all!

I had such a good experience here, this school is highly recommended by me. Classes are being taught my experts in the field, the school (teachers and the students) felt like like a family, and interesting talks were given each month by inspiring professionals in the photography world. Would love to do this again, I have learned a lot and that will aways stay with me. I feel very grateful for this experience. x Iris

The course I did at LioP was very instructive and hands-on. We went through key lighting concepts and then practiced them immediately. Holger is also an excellent teacher! He explained everything in a clear and straight-forward way. Highly recommended!

I totally recommend the beginners course, it's perfect for those interested in a better understanding of the camera in full manual settings. We were blessed with the weather so we could practise both indoors and outdoors. Fun and very well organised. Great choice! A weekend very well spent! M
G. P.
I've attended quite a few of the short courses; most recently the night photography. Learnt so much & a lot of fun! The teachers are at the top of their game. I love the creative edge that they give photography.
C. C.
The Mastering Manual Exposure workshop - super friendly atmosphere, simple and straight to the point. With no-nonsense language, I could learn how to use ISO, aperture and shutter speed to best effect. I highly recommend.
M. H.
Such an insightful and educational course. I've had my camera for 5 years and never bothered to learn the basics which is a HUGE mistake! I learnt so much from Holger's beginners course than I have in the 5 years of taking pictures.
I can not recommend it enough!

Im currently attending the full time course and find it offers a great platform to explore a diverse and interesting choice of modules. The 'Street Life/Documentary' with Iwona Pinkowicz and 'Still Life' with Liz McBurney were personal favourites and definitely worth booking alone if you're figuring out which modules may inspire you.
As a photographer with no previous experience in still life I found the course particularly interesting. We had full access to a working studio and all equipment over 2 weekends, and were encouraged to push our creative thinking as far as possible. Liz was happy to stay late on more than one occasion and share her knowledge which was incredibly generous. Still life is definitely an option I'd like to invest more time in.

I started from a fairly low base of technical understanding, but I learnt a huge amount over my couple of days on the beginners' course with the wonderful Eliska Kyselkova. She was a terrific teacher with infinite patience and a great depth of knowledge on the subject. I will definitely come back for the intermediate course once I’ve got to grips with all of the material from the beginners’ course.
T. M.
Really enjoyable couple of days. The teacher really knew her stuff, and by the end of it I felt really comfortable using my camera - with a better understanding of photography more generally. Will definitely be looking attacking more advanced courses!
B. J.
Superb presentation by a very affable, knowledgeable and personable trainer (Holger Pooten). Training pitched just right for a range of experience amongst the tutees. Highly recommended. I would love to book one of their longer courses one day. I went on the taster sessions (3 hours each) of Mastering Manual Exposure & Mastering Depth of Field workshops.
C. E.
I took the beginners course as a refresher so I am not technically a "beginner". The course content was pitched at a good level and it was great to have practical parts to the course as well. I do think the course could easily be condensed into one day 9-5 and cheaper (get it on a Groupon deal for only £69 - full price £195) . The "classroom" is quite cramped and hot (no air con) but they do provide tea, coffee and water!
H. P.
Really good courses - amazing teachers. Just finished the one day a week course and I loved it, I feel much more confident in how to approach photography professionally. Thank you LIoP!

I had the fortune to assist several lessons with Holger Pooten.
Amazing tips, professial approach and very well-knowledged person. He makes you feel comfortable and also he brings to you a lots of positive energy and inspiration. Great photographer and extremely passionate for teaching.

Great one day taster course (Mastering Exposure) at LIOP. Tutor was great - passionate and knowledgeable. Class was small ensuring questions can be answered. Would definitely recommend.
C. G.
Amazing course and teachers - I did the beginner's course and then the portrait course the week after and feel way more confident with my camera and have lots of portfolio pictures. Thanks Eliska and Joana!
M. C.
The workshop I attended was very useful and our teacher was passionate and gave us a lot of info, he was very approachable.
This short course focused on depth of field was very stimulating, I highly recommend it.
J. J.
Absolutely fantastic starting point for everyone who want to take great photos.
You will have a chance to practice all new skills during very inspirational walks with your tutor.
Thank you Elyska Kyselkova for your creativity, great knowledge and patience - it was great experience.
L. S.
Brilliant experience! Holger is so knowledgeable and he made even the most technical components of the course easy to understand. I will be booking further classes for sure!
C. C.
Very informative and hands on Beginners course, goes through all those strange buttons and dials on your DSLR. Couple of trips outside to put in practice. Good location, recommended. Thanks Chris
H. B.
Great course, exactly what I needed - the basics to start taking pictures on manual. Teacher (Joana) was very good and I learnt a lot in just 2 days.
M. O.
I wasnt sure what to expect. Have learnt a lot about depth of field theory first part of the course. The last 45 minutes we practice taking photos. Enjoed the whole 3 hpirs and would recommend this tp beginners.
J. M.
I bought a digital SLR and have tried blogs, videos and the really bad canon user manual. 2 hours and I can actually use my camera in manual.. will be signing up for more.. the combination of professionism of a German professor and creative flexibility.. it’s a winner
P. K.
Great time attending the course. Even if you know a bit about taking photos, still there's a chance you might want to actually MAKE them. Then LIoP is the place to go.
P. A.
I must recommend the Intermediate course i took this week , It was run professionally with the time taken to answer all of your questions . It certainly inspired me to look at different elements of photography and approach them with confidence .
S. O.
Great course and fully recommend. Great mix of classroom learning and practical learning. Instructors know their stuff and provided good feedback along the way
M. M.
First of all, We do not need a 10 minute break every hour. It's a waste of time and we then have less classroom time. Overall we must have spent no more than 4.3 hours in the classroom from the 6. Breaks need to be less frequent.
And also having the lunch break at 12 noon (when we have only started at 10am) doesn't really work either.
If we do ask questions in-between then it should not be ignored and replied with "well we won't have the time to discuss this.." or "its quite complicated.." and leave it at that.
I don't feel convinced enough at this moment to recommend the course to anybody, but I hope my feedback has been more productive rather than received negatively, highlighting where you could improve and be a better photography course provider.
