Reviews of Ristorante Caffe' Gustami
D. C.
A tucked away top traditional Italian.
As I ran hurriedly past burnt out vehicles, dodged Molotov cocktails and leapt over makeshift barriers fortified with razor wire, I successfully made it to the entrance of Ristorante Caffe' Gustami. 😜
It's easy to dismiss this restaurant from its housing estate location and humble outward appearance. Enter and you'll soon relax in traditional Italian café comfort. I was immediately welcomed by a cool, well groomed elderly Italian gentleman. The chef and father. He explained the each of the dishes on the special chalk board. The younger, elegant looking Italian woman (the daughter) took my order.
I took in my surroundings. Pictures of all things famous and Italian (I found a few portraits of the great Pavarotti) decorated the walls. There are hundreds of wine bottles impressively stacked in racks. At the back of the restaurant is a small open kitchen where the chef works his culinary magic. Comfortable wooden tables are decorated with vibrantly coloured fresh flowers. The space felt bright and most importantly it felt traditional.
Food was served quickly. Each dish was sensational, some of the best Italian food I've tried, prepared from scratch. Flavours were zesty, portions were perfect. Dishes were delicate, to be enjoyed slowly, in a social setting. The tables are set out so.
Price is excellent, given the quality of the food. One of the best Italian restaurants in Birmingham. A little out of the way (at the back of the ICC) but well worth the effort to travel to.

Need to say I am Italian and really picky when it comes to food, I regard this little gem as one of my favourite Italian restaurants I ever been in UK nut probably even Italy. Amazing little Italian restaurant, the whole meal was super and coffee authentic and really tasty, I had gnocchi with gorgonzola and they were absolutely fantastic, will be back to try more food! A hidden gem not to be missed!!!
N. S.
My partner and I would often come here when we lived in the area. The most amazing Italian food and the people that work here are so lovely and attentive. If you want traditional Italian, this is the place to go. Looking forward to visiting again when we’re back in the area.
G. S.
Gustami has become our go to Italian Restaurant. Authentic and homely Italian food cooked with love. A lovely family who provide and excellent service. We can't wait to return. Thank you for an amazing dinner.
R.
Amazing little family restaurant with dad making all the meals and daughter serving. First time visit with my family of 7. Wonderful starter platter, fresh and delicious. Mains all arrived piping hot. Ragu excellent. I had veal in mushroom sauce…so good! Fantastic service! Will definitely eat there again.
B.
Had an amazing meal here last night with friends. The staff are super friendly and the food was amazing.

A little gem hidden away about a 12/15min walk from the ICC Birmingham.. Wonderful food, excellent staff and a marvellous Chef. Please try their sharing board if you are in a group. It's amazing. And so very reasonably priced too. Excellent!
D. C.
Well worth the effort. The best authentic Italian food I have had for a long time. Topped with being served by friendly staff who are just as passionate about their food. Don't be put off by location.
S. R.
A lovely cafe/restaurant as the name would suggest. Selling authentic homemade Italian food. Small and cosy. Excellent service with great friendly staff who always make you feel welcome. I would highly recommend this establishment for relaxed dining.
E. K.
The most authentic and delicious Italian food in Birmingham.
A. N.
Superb Pizza!! Best i have ever had. friendly, family run, just a fantastic experience. everyone should learn from them about how to run a restaurant and care about food quality and customers like they do. hats off to them!
T. K. T. B. J.
You don't come here for the location. You don't come here for the decor. You come here for the food. It's always good and the chef and staff are always friendly and helpful. Excellent value for money.
C. W.
The best Italian food I’ve ever eaten. Absolutely fantastic. Great service and value for money. Definitely worth a visit. I’ll be going back.
A. L.
Great food. I will be back 👍

This little place is a gem in the rough. Cuisine is the most authentic with a well-rehearsed menu and plenty of chef's specials on the board that get fully explained by the waiting staff
Amazingly, the kitchen is a one-man-band. I came here with 4 friends and we all had different courses that were served together.
The wine selection is outstanding and that alone would be worth coming to this restaurant for, however the homemade fresh tortelloni, ragù and chicken cacciatora were worthy of a standing ovation from a fellow Italian to another.
We will most definitely come back again, this is a little piece of Italy away from Italy.
H. F.
The reviews and lists are true. This is the best, most authentic Italian restaurant in Birmingham!
Lovely Italian owner-operators. Really good honest food, with a large wine selection. No frills. Inexpensive. Perfect casual dining, with friends and family. Especially if they appreciate genuine Italian food. Don’t be put off by the location. It’s worth the short drive from city centre.

A wonderful find in the unlikeliest of places! This looks like a cafe but the food is of a high restaurant standard. There are a number of daily specials plus a good selection of pasta, pizza and meat dishes. There is a good choice of beers and wines which are very reasonably priced - I had a £16 chianti and it was significantly better than many £30-40 wines I have had elsewhere.
We started with calamari which was lightly coated in a delicious garlicky batter. My husband had steak served perfectly rare with a generous serving of roasted vegetables and I had the special mezzelune (crescent shaped stuffed pasta) served with a nicely spicy arrabiata sauce - I asked for bread so I could mop up every scrap! The tiramisu was light but not particularly special but the marsala and coffee which followed were great!
Great service with warm, friendly staff - even the chef came out to say hello! Three courses with bread, wine, coffees and marsala came to only £60 - great value!
The only problem with this place - they don't deliver!!!
M. W.
Fantastic experience. Feels like you've been transported to Italy. Lovely home cooked food, good quality wine and exceptional value.
M. G.
More the friendly and informal ambience of a true Italian trattoria, than a restaurante, Gustami is as unpretentious as the wonderful food served in an unlikely location.
S. J.
Absolute hidden gem. Food is authentic, delicious and the atmosphere is great.
Everyone we bring to restraunt absolutely love it, so it's not just us!
R. R.
Authentic Italian restaurant with the loveliest staff.
In my opinion, the best Italian restaurant in Birmingham.
J. B.
Just to say this is a hidden gem of restaurant and well worth a visit. My family and I enjoyed a superb evening where the food was simply delicious. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff at all and we were made to feel like we were the only diners there such was their attentiveness. Highly recommended and we will definately be going back
T. L. R.
I love this Italian. A quiet little homely cafe on the outskirts of the city with affordable pricing and top quality food. Seriously the pizza here is outstanding. All this is served by superb staff who are very kind to me and my family. My partner suffers from social anxiety and she finds Gustami a peaceful family friendly enviirment. Highly recommend
Ps the tiramisu is a real treasure.
B. S.
Really enjoyed eating here - nice atmosphere and a good range on the menu - fresh pasta is always a winner!! Great Lasagne, nice pizza. Would recommend and will be visiting again.
H. H.
Authentic Homely Italian food!! Extreamly good!! Really well priced and really good service. The chef use to be a personal chef to Pavarotti. If your looking for homely Italian food...this is the place.
a.
Authentic delicious Italian food with great service, highly recommend
E. A.
Very friendly welcome from the chef and waiter. Delicious calamari followed by seafood risotto and pepperoni pizza. Affogato and tiramisu were both delicious.
M. K.
Authentic Italian restaurant. Amazing food and great family atmosphere. We definitely visit again soon. Grazie mille ragazzi :)
H. B.
Amazing food and service! I will be making sure I can pronounce schiacciata properly for the next time I go, thank you all
M. M.
What an honour to have our food cooked by someone who cooked for the legend Luciano Pavarotti! The Chef is so welcoming and nice, as well as the waiter that served us. Fantastic food at surprisingly cheap prices!
V. C.
The chef and staff are really friendly and professional, very cosy place and quite cheap for the quality they offer, will definitely come back
S. M.
As always chef lives upto his reputation. Good quality ingredients makinf delicious authentic Italien cuisine for very reasonable prices. No fuss, very welcoming. Always a pleasure coming here. Nice to still have independent restaurants around given everything going on. Will be visiting again soon.
P. S.
Just pop in with my kids and order for takeaway. They served us food hot like hell, fresh like air and bloody tasty! It's best margarita and pasta I've ever ate! Absolutely love the quality of what they cooked !! Cosy place which I will visit for sure one day for dine in 😊

First time visiting and won't be the last. Food was very delicious and the waiter and chef are very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend for anyone wanting authentic Italian food.
B. B.
Tasty food!!! For a bargain...... Professional owners too ...
S. W.
I love this place. Its run by an Italian family and the chef used to work for Pavarotti. They were so lovely and the food is delicious and very reasonably priced. The espresso is very good and the dessert was yummy. I loved it so much I went back 6 days later and its definitely going to become a local for me. They do lunch and dinner as well as take out.
J. R.
Great little find, hidden Gem! Italian Chef & Waiter... Authentic Italian. Must try!
K. L.
Delicious Italian food with wonderful friendly staff and relaxed atmosphere. Amazing value for money. We will definitely return!

Hi shared an amazing lunch with girlfriend today at Gustami, amazing meal as usual. A brilliant find, in an usual area for such fabulous Italian food and customer service.
K. A.
Great local restaurant, simple but fantastic food and great value for money. Will definitely be back!
G. E.
Very Good place. Nice me just the right size. 🙏🏿 🙏🏿
A. I.
Wonderful food! Took me back to my trip to Italy years ago. Excellent example of authentic Italian food and very reasonably priced.
Service was of a good standard and staff were very helpful and polite. The chef even made a point of thanking myself and my friend personally after complimenting their food.
Can't recommend the place enough, true diamond in the rough.
N. A.
This was a revelation. I literally drove past this place 3 times a days 5 days a week and never really noticed it as it is a very understated kind of cafe/ restaurant. As a coffee lover and in need of a caffeine fix to help me get through a long day, the shopkeeper a few doors down from Gustami told me to try their coffee.... I'm so glad I did.
Amazing superior quality Italian coffee which instantly made me a regular costumer. Their food also top quality homemade breads and pastas. Amazing variety of Italian cheeses. Super efficient and extremely friendly service and staff.
Their chef used to cook for the one and only Luciano pavarotti.
This place is small but spacious
Understated but quality
Good value for money
Good for Families or small groups
A proper Mediterranean atmosphere in the middle of a quiet part of Birmingham 👌❤❤❤❤❤
K. S.
Fantastic restaurant and experience. Food was first class and atmosphere was so authentic. Doesn't look much from the outside but inside it feels like you are actually on holiday! The vibe and service was excellent. Food was delicious and served so quickly. If it's authentic real Italian food served in a homely manner you are after, it's definitely worth the visit!
C. C.
A pizza like in Italy. Definitely will visit them again!
K. B.
Delicious food nice service is worth coming back lovely place
E. S.
2 years ago, it was 5 stars and it still is. One of my favourite restaurants in the world. Original...
P. M.
Another of Birmingham's hidden gems off the beaten track. Small, independent Italian restaurant, best to book especially at weekends as gaining local popularity. Food and service excellent, very reasonable prices. Don't be put off by the locality. If you like Italian food away from the ubiquitous chains it's very well worth a visit.
D. B.
Great cheap authentic Italian food. The chef is super nice and friendly and the food is amazingly cheap. The portions are bit smaller than usual, but still worth it. I put 4 stars as the place would welcome some redecoration and i found that glasses weren't perfectly clean on two different occasions.
B. A.
Lovely Italian cuisine and a serene environment. Good for couples.
J. T.
I have eaten here twice. I love the quattro formaggi pizza, the calamari, carbonara and the spaghetti con polpetto. Everything was so delicious and served quickly. The chef and his staff are just ever so friendly. You'll definitely want to come back
D. C.
This is an Italian restaurant run by Italians, so the food is very good and authentic. They make fresh pasta every day, so try the tortellini which has different fillings daily. The sharing starter is great with lots of cold meats and cheeses to pick from. The pudding selection plate is also a must as you get to sample all of the deserts. I have been here a few times and it is always very good.
C. G.
A real gem! The food is great and the prices are amazing. Don’t be put off by the area, this restaurant is certainly worth a visit. The chef is a lovely guy and the other staff are friendly too. Often busy, which is a good thing eh! A traditional Italian feel at Italian prices. We keep just coming back time and again.
J. E.
Absolutely astonishing value - fabulous, simple, tasty food from people who obviously care, at incredible prices.
EDIT - back again post lockdown, absolutely delighted that Gustami are still here, would have been a horrible loss to the local area and to a lovely family and staff. Welcome back! (Still five stars if anybody was in any doubt)
u. F.
I went with my flatmate on Thursday night and we had a great dinner. The staff is very friendly. The traditional Italian appetizer Antipasto for 2 is amazing. We could have had dinner just with it. And then, we had two large and tasty pizzas. It was a pity that we were so full that we could not try any dessert. Next time!
J. S.
Went tonight with my girlfriend, it was absolutely unbelievable - possibly the best hidden restraunt in Birmingham, I CANNOT wait to go again, thank you lads 🔥🔥
y. t.
Authentic food and the chef cooks with love. You can feel it while you are eating at the restaurant. The chef checks if everything is ok with the food. Must visit for authentic Italian experience.
M. L. S. S.
The atmosphere here is so cosy. This place is the real deal. The food is so nice. When it comes you think it's a small portion but it's fills you up. The cocktails are so nice. The staff are attentive. The chef is on point and is an excellent cook. I had to say to charge me an extra £10 as I wanted to leave a tip as the service was amazing.
d. s.
What a hidden gem! Authentic Italian food, and we were so surprised at how cheap everything was!
Ricotta and speck mezzalune, and the cottaletta were both absolutely amazing, and we will definitely be back to try more dishes.
If you're looking for a real Italian restaurant, this is the place!
I. S.
This is a small cafe by day and restaurant by evening situated out of the city centre in a parade of shops where it seems an unlikely find. It's a brave venture to open up in such a location but in Italy the idea of the neighbourhood restaurant was traditional and this serves that kind of food. Nothing flash, no Michelin chic, no hipster minimalism, just well prepared and uncomplicated traditional dishes.
Chef has a good pedigree having cooked for Pavarotti as his personal chef. Mind you, he looked like a man who put quantity before quality. Don't worry though everything we tried in our group of 10 was very tasty.
There are sharing platters on the starter menu which are for 2 people and they arrive on an enormous board. They would probably satisfy 3 or 4 people if you are not huge eaters or intend to eat at least 3 courses.
I followed that with spaghetti vongole which was simply spaghetti and clams with oil and chilli. Others went for pizza, lasagne or veg options. Deserts were popular and most of us shared as portions were 'healthy'. Coffee was also very good. Total bill even with some wine and beer was under £20 a head. You cannot go wrong here.
J. R.
Easily the best Italian in Birmingham. I've had the pleasure of visiting many times and the food and service has always been faultless. I recently had a takeaway, which was also great.
J. V.
August 21 20174 times a week my husband and i come here to eat. Three people serving you; the chef, the assistant of the chef and one waitress. All smiley and very very very friendly. Good food, good eat, affordable prices. Best bruschetta and risotto i have ever had. Please come and visit and try their menu. But pls be patient if they get busy. They will always come to you as soon as they can. Coz everything is prepared as you ordered. Made fresh. What a lovely Italian restaurant we will never stop coming back!
L. H.
I love coming here and usually visit as a treat once a month. The staff are lovely and the food is great. I really like the low-key setting and it’s very reasonably priced.
Wholeheartedly recommend!
J. S.
Amazing place. Authentic Italian food and very reasonably priced. Very simple decor that makes you feel at home. Everything you see has been put together with a lot of love.
t. c.
A very wonderful experience in this restaurant, a very cozy place where you'll be able to enjoy the real italian cuisine, the staff is very kind and helpful to all the needs of the customer, all the ingredients are fresh and perfectly balanced in the plates that will be served for you. Highly reccomended for all who want a real taste of the traditional and authentic italian gastronomy.
A. N.
Lovely place. People working there are very warm and nice. The pizza was amazing. My son loved it. We will surely come back for more. Thank you.
R. I.
Wow, what more can I say!!
Recommended from a Meetup group I brought my family here for a birthday meal and we were all really impressed
The restaurant is small with only a handful of tables but the quality of the food and the service is second to none
The staff apart from all being genuine Italian are excellent and nothing is too much trouble for them
The food is just like the real thing and I have no hesitation in highly recommending this place
M. S.
Great food for reasonable price. The chef and staff are very friendly. After few visits, you become like going to a friend’s place for dinner.
Tried pizza, pasta, panini, all good. And tiramisu is my favourite!
A. W.
The food here is always amazing. The staff are friendly and the chef recognised me and my partner and came out to greet us. The menu changes each day, with a few staple dishes and dessert of the day and pasta of the day specials.
Its not in the city centre so it is not crowded. My favourite italian restuarant.
a. g.
Absolutely love the Italian home made tortellini and the tiramisu. Must visit place. Also the staff is very sweet. An elderly chef comes in the end to greet you good bye - was really touched by this gesture.
R. L.
We went with a friend who found the restaurant in a local paper, the reviews were very good so we thought why not? The staff were both so friendly, professional and welcoming. The food was fresh and very tasty. The prices were also attractive and exceedingly good value. Definitely be coming back
J. R.
Lovely, simple, authentic Italian restaurant. Very unassuming, but excellent food, wine and atmosphere. Just like being in a little place on a corner in Italy. Love it. Will definitely come again.
C. E.
Lovely food great price gem in ladywood
G. C.
I was recommended this newly-opened restaurant by other Italians living in Birmingham. I was delighted! The venue is furnished in a simple and home-like, however refined, fashion. It is very bright and welcoming. We were also lucky it was a sunny day so the light came in through the big windows that look out on to a garden. The staff is LOVELY, so welcoming and affable, always smiling and desiring to make you feel at home. This is a typical trait of the region they come from, where hospitality is a key characteristic.
The food is all fresh and home-made. If you you wish to eat AUTHENTIC italian cuisine, experience the true tastes and textures, this is the place to go. And all this at an awufully affordable price. I ate bruschetta, ravioi filled with potato, mint and pecorino cheese, with a sage and butter sauce, and a selection of daily-baked desserts...and I was on seventh heaven.
I highly recommend this place to both Italians missing their food and foreigners looking to experience proper, genuine Italian dishes.
T. B.
Amazing authentic Italian. Food cooked by Pavarotti's former personal chef! Who is an absolute gem of a man. Clearly loves what he's doing. And the best carbonarra and tortellini I've ever had!
L. P.
Had a really nice food here tonight. Small modern Italian restaurant. Nice informal atmosphere - good service and really good food. Definitely worth a visit and my partner and I will be coming back
b. p.
Best pizza I've had in Birmingham and so reasonably priced! I recommend the 4 cheese. Also had a lovely fry up there. The staff are all very friendly, I've been telling everyone I know to go there.
R. C.
A hidden gem in Birmingham. It's the last place I would expect to find an authentic Italian eatery. Family have just arrived from Bologna. There's a wood oven for pizza. Crostata and espresso I had were melt in the mouth. I'm telling everyone I know about this place. Free on road parking too and very reasonable prices.
M. H.
Absolutely wonderful, a proper little hidden gem in Birmingham ! Would definitely recommend to anyone, my boyfriend is incredibly picky with his food and he cleaned his plate saying how lovely it was (he ordered steak that came with a side of roasted potatoes) I ordered Gnocchi and a side of roasted vegetables which was absolutely divine, we followed up with a tiramisu that they make themselves and it was the best tiramisu I have ever tried. We will definitely come back if we're in Birmingham again!
L. e. L.
Truly authentic family Italians restaurant. Simple and full of flavour food as italian cosine should be. If u want piece of real Italy there is no better place in Birmingham's. Nice choice of italian wines available.
T. C.
Authentic Italian food in an unassuming setting. The sharing platter starter was enormous, the carbonara perfect and they even made me a ristretto coffee off menu. Sharing starter, two mains, 1 dessert, coffee, bottle of wine, 2 liqueurs for £48.50. Will be going back and working our way through the menu. Kitchen staff chatting away in Italian - perfect!
M. L.
Fantastic, genuinely superb authentic Italian food and amazingly cheap. Not in a good area of Brum' & is done out more like a cafe than a restaurant, some shallow people I know would be put off by the decor but if you're interested in good food and great value I cannot recommend better. Half the people in there on ,my visit were Italian.
A. F.
Delicious and inexpensive home cooked Italian food with an excellent dessert selection. Would recommend the tagliatelle & tortellini. A family favourite!
l. l.
Exceptional! Delicious! 100% authentic Italian. Handmade with passion and care. Looking forward to going again soon! Thank you for sharing your precious tips with me today!
G. C.
Lovely, simple, authentic Italian restaurant. Very unassuming, but excellent food, wine and atmosphere. Just like being in a little place on a corner in Italy. Love it.
K. Š.
Four of us visited Gustami on Tuesday evening and place was quite busy but starters and mains arrived fast.
Food was AMAZING!
Waiters were very helpful and friendly.
Highly recommended!!!
D. S.
An absolutely amazing restaurant. Fantastic food and service. Great price. You know it's a great restaurant because Italians eat there.
S. C.
Really tasty authentic home made food. Rustic Italian at great prices and the family-feel hospitality is so warm and friendly. Will definitely recommend to others
E. S.
Staff it's good and really willing to give you the best service. My friends through the food was good and they loved it (we eat calzones and pizzas), however for my taste wasn't that good...dishes are big but not tasty in my opinion.
E. S.
Amazing little gem! Very nice atmosphere, friendly staff and food is on another level. Freshly prepared and delicious, highly recommend!
M. I.
Nice cosy genuine Italian restaurant. Really good food with generous portions. Friendly welcoming staff. Can definitely recommend.

Absolutely beautiful Italian cuisine.Gustami make the best vegan/vegetarian pizza in Birmingham... and for only 6 pounds you cannot go wrong. The owner was the famous Pavarotti's personal chef for 5 years
T. R.
Very lovely home made food and a friendly staff especially the Chef which might be the owner. Not your every day franchise Italian restaurant, it's proper family run place.
m. d.
Very friendly and welcoming
All good fresh food, and delicious!
Spotless too
Highly recommend.would never expect to have found it tucked away here.
Reasonably priced
J. T.
A great restaurant! It's a bit out of the center but it's a lovely place, great family owned vibe in here. Food is delicious and very good value for money. Better than most of the more expensive places I'm Brindley Place!
G. R.
Excellent home made Italian food.
What one would except from a "trattoria" in Italy. Highly reconmend tortelli or ravioli, their home made bread. If you have a sweet tooth, there is plenty to choose... everything freshly made in house!
k. c.
Amazing authentic Italian cuisine.
Fantastic and quick service with personal touches, definitely returning for more!
S. H.
Home made food and friendly service. Would recommend for lunch or dinner. Don't let the location put you off.
A. B.
Best place to have a meal, food is great and the staff is fantastic!
S. L.
Found this as was going to the Arena which is 10 minutes walk away. Great food and so reasonably priced. All freshly prepared and cooked and the vino bianco was lush.
Looking forward to going back next time we are in the area...
Pasta molto bella
D. C.
Nice people, super chilled for lunch.
I. G. G.
Amazing homemade food and friendly staff
K. K.
As good as it gets. A honest vibe abounds. The Quattro formagi could have done with a little more cheese, but I probably shouldn't complain given the price. I did miss higher end Italian wines like Amarone/Barolo.
C. M.
Excellent authentic food at great prices.
S. V.
What a gem great service food and price.
Hard to beat for basic home cooked Italian food.
R. D.
Delicious food, lovely staff and service, excellent value. Have recommended it to all my friends and family
A. C.
Authentic Italian cuisine...my favourite one.. since they opened (1year more or less) they did such a great job.. I love to go there everytime i'm in town.
A. W.
The best Italian I've been to in the UK. Family run, friendly, utterly tasty and fresh. Insanely cheap for the service you get! Been here three times this week already!
M. S.
Excellent. Dont be put off by the area. Well worth a visit. You can call in for a coffee and cake during the afternoon or fresh home made food in the evening. Great food. Well worth a visit. See u there.
H. P.
Small little homely restaurant/cafe. Not in the best location. Food and service is great. Recommended for traditional Italian food.
T. H.
The venue is Italian family owned. I love the food and service from this Restaurant. I totally recommend it.
A. G.
Best Quattro Formaggi I had in my life; you can eat there but order takeout aswell; medium portions but very tasty and favorable prices!
A. K.
Admittedly from the outside - the restaurant does not look the greatest. However the food is fantastic and you should be paying a lot more for the quality of food that you get.
D. H.
Great food, fab service, slightly untidy dining area.
D.
Love this place calamari is always excellent!! Pizza are great to .When ever I need a Italian fix I come back for more thanks guys.
K. L.
An authentic Italian place filled with charm. It's definitely worth driving 10 minutes away from the city centre just to eat here.
K. C.
Great local restaurant, homemade pasta and sourdough bread. A nice change from loud city centre chain restaurants. Peaceful yet full .
J. W.
