I had the fungi risotto which was tasty, my friends had pizza & pasta which they said was great. The staff were friendly. For such a busy place there is only 1 toilet in an awkward position so at one point 4 girls were queuing at the bottom of the stairs where waiters bring food through. It was very loud on the top floor as all the tables were full, felt as though they needed a window open to spread the sound. Downfall was their measures are not accurate. We ordered Gin & mixers and couldn’t taste the gin, so we all got an extra shot to put in our drink and he brought them to our table, no wonder we couldn’t taste them as it was a little more than a thimble full. Think they need to address this especially at £3.50 or so for the gin.

This is a lovely little Italian restaurant. A short menu with well prepared food - obviously Italian. Good wine list and the cocktails are very nicely mixed. Service very friendly and unobtrusive. Go for the relaxed ambience, soft music and well cooked dishes by a chef who knows what s/he is doing.

Was there to celebrate my boyfriend’s birthday and they put a candle on his tiramisu and sang him birthday song. It’s a small gesture but they definitely didn’t have to do it. Definitely made his day, food was great too!

Visited in September of 2019 while on a trip to Wales. We were staying in a B&B just up the street. The area is beautiful and close to so many things. The food was truly excellent and the staff was attentive and kind. Hoping to return someday!

Lovely hearty Italian food. Staff were very welcoming and competent, service quality was excellent. We came with our 3 year old and she loved the pizza. Seemed like a great place for a romantic meal or a special meal out, we looked a bit scruffy in comparison to other customers but still felt completely welcomed. Parking was very difficult so I would plan that in advance if driving.

You know it’s going to be great food when it’s a Tuesday night and it’s fully booked! This is hands down the best Italian restaurant I have ever visited. The food was amazing, the atmosphere really relaxed, staff really friendly, funny and attentive despite being fully booked and busy…and being able to see into the kitchen and watch everything being made fresh from scratch was brilliant. They had nothing to hide and watching them make the pizzas and pasta etc from scratch just really elevated the entire experience. If it wasn’t for the fact that we were visiting Cardiff from Yorkshire, we would be regular customers for sure and without doubt would be trying every single thing on the menu!! Only negative is that it isn’t local to us!

Very good food, and lots of seating. The restaurant has been extended out the back with a conservatory, a marquee and the front has a terrace so the tables are well spaced and airy. It was quite busy (a testament to the quality of the food) and we had a little issue ordering - we and another table got passed over several times for a group ordering drinks while they waited on their friends (they seemed to know the owner but staff walked past both our tables several times to take their order and serve them drinks) - but once we did order the food came quickly and was delicious. Finally, the staff got our order wrong a couple of times (a tuna pizza turned into a mushroom pizza and the wrong drink turned up) so they lose marks for the service.

We had an excellent evening on our first visit to this restaurant. The food was classic Italian done perfectly, and the staff were thoughtful and attentive. A lot of effort has gone into making the outdoor dining area feel as cosy as indoors and I would say it has paid off.

A pleasant evening in general, but if you have dietary requirements - even something as simple and commonplace as being vegetarian - do make abundantly sure that your requirements are communicated all the way through to the kitchen. I would hope and expect that more care is now being taken, but nevertheless make a point of checking.

She explained anything we liked about the menu, set the window table for us, offered to have my father's dish remade when she realized there might be calamari in it and he had mentioned he didn't terribly like calamari. My wife and I were invited to a birthday celebration meal. We had to pre order our choice of meal prior to the night. Unfortunately my starter, Calamari, didn't arrive, fortunately someone ordered it as a main course and after tasting it was glad it hadn't turned up. Tough and chewy, have tasted much better. Main course of spinach and ricotta ravioli was superb, best I've tasted. The bottle of wine we ordered was okay at £29 but for my palate have enjoyed bottles more for £10 less. Staff were very polite and helpful. Would I go there again? Not sure!!!

Celebrating at Elgano turned out to be a fantastic day. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very special, with lots of kind care and attention given to us. The decor is bang on up-to-date, the atmosphere spot on; vibrant, jolly, but not stuffy. We ordered incredible calamari - excellent dish. Bruschetta also very good. Mushroom risotto solid flavour and texture. The pizzas were particularly special, great base, wonderfully flavoured tomato base sauce. Overall we had a magnificent time at Elgano, and certainly wouldn't hesitate to go there again!

The best Italian restaurant I have ever been . The food is sublime and a real feel of Italy. The mushroom risotto was cooked to perfection and you was able to eat it straight away and for it to not burn your mouth. My girlfriend had the carbonara which was also done to perfection with a little extra parmesan cheese on top. We also had a side of garlic bread and it is by far the best I have ever had. The food is so good the price doesn't matter as you know it is worth every penny. Highly recommend to anyone

I stayed at the Elgano Hotel in October 2014. The room itself was modern and clean, with a really smart looking en-suite and I received a friendly welcome. I will however mention a few points which were disappointing. I stayed on a Friday night, and when I went for breakfast at 9 on the Saturday morning, I found that they had stopped serving cooked breakfast at 8:30am. I think this is too early to stop serving, particularly on a weekend. There was also a function going on downstairs, which didn't really bother me, but my room was right above it and it was very noisy. I can imagine it would be frustrating for someone who wanted an early night. On the whole though, the price wasn't bad and the room was comfortable. Just a shame I couldn't get breakfast.

We just walked in on a Saturday night without a booking, I know we are awful, and the restaurant was heaving. The host found us a lovely table and explained she’d need it back in an hour and a half and we were thankful for that. Brisk traditional Italian service, sometimes a bit chaotic. It's easy to get a poor table here, as did our party of three this evening. Right by the service counter. Food was perfectly acceptable but nothing stand-out. My calamari was tasty but just on the tough side and blandly off-white, not quite golden. Steak was presumably sirloin as ordered but ate like rump. Veg should have been roast potatoes and du saison but again didn't enthrall or surprise. With drinks and a goodish tip, £40 a head is a bit of a kick for a pleasant but unexceptional meal out.

Wife and I had last minute opportunity for anniversary meal out on a Monday night, so we decided to let TripAdvisor choose for us; we would go to the top rated restaurant in Cardiff that we hadn't visited before, and Elgano was it. I wasn't aware that it was a restaurant and subsequently learned that the hotel opened their dining room to the outside world January 2016. Keeping an open mind, we were very pleased with the atmosphere and setting; nicely presented but not too formal, has a nice family restaurant atmosphere. Italian staff were pleasant and very helpful, everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves and there was a nice balance between good communal atmosphere and intimacy depending on what you wanted out of the evening. Food was excellent; perfectly sized portions, wonderfully made with delicate balance of flavours. Relaxed atmosphere, quality food, reasonable price; it was exactly what we wanted. Will definitely return.

Fantastic location: With 3 beautiful fields (Llandaff, Pontcana, Blackweir) and Bute park all in minutes walk away, it's got abundant nature in the neighbourhood. It's also very close to the city centre and a fantastic place for visiting cricket, rugby and cricket fans/players considering its location (next to the Swalec stadium and a few minutes walk to the Millennium stadium). They also have an Italian restaurant now which offers lovely food and a bar (and if they don't have what you want, there are loads other great ones on the same street within minutes walk. Oh, and despite the close approximation to the city centre, Cathedral Rd is a quiet fantastic area. Did I mention they've got a secure gated car park at the back.
