Reviews of The European Restaurant

Lovely place for Romantic Meal for two. Will definitely return . No draught beer but excellent wine list, bottled beer. Waitresses was on que and didn't have to ask for anything. Pasta dish was excellent, specials board as well.

Not been here for literally decades but I'm glad to say nothing has changed and the amazing night I once had was still to be had. Great staff, fantastic food that couldn't be faulted in anyway, not to mention the actual venue. Quiet, romantic, and intimate. Highly recommended.
S. B.
Old school experience - staff really look after you, take their time to explain the different dishes and drinks. Food is exceptional, but reasonably priced. House wines are good, and in large bottles(!).
Very cosy atmosphere and a great antidote to the manufactured hospitality of some of the chains I could mention.
Highly recommended.

Lovely little place tucked away overlooking the Cathedral. Really enjoyed our meal here and the waiters were very nice. If you want an authentic Italian restaurant, this is the place to go. I would highly recommend.
P. C.
Top quality. Every dish perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Attentive service. Reasonable prices too. Perfect.

Have been going there for many years
lovely atmosphere, lovely staff, lovely food
E. J.
Wonderful food in a fabulous location, we had reserved the window table for a friend's special occasion. The staff were very friendly upon arrival and we requested that giacomo sang to our friend which he did so beautifully. No idea what he was singing about but it was done so beautifully and passionately it didn't matter. We ordered the starter and main the mushrooms to to start were delightful in a tomato based sauce on an English muffin. I had the fish which was tilapia and chose the cream sauce option the other was tomato and herb. The fish melted in your mouth and the sauce was Devine. The fish was served with seasonal vegetables and both dishes were hot. We all had puddings with 3 of the four of us having a glass of wine and the lunchtime bill came to £95. Oh And we all had a latte to finish Very good value, delicious food, great service and a wonderful view of the knife angel and the cathedral. We Will definitely be back.

Food is great and authentic Italian family run business
I have been several times and this restaurant never disappoints

Great food.. only a minor disappointment that we weren't made aware that it was a Christmas special menu. Still enjoyed it!

We hadn't been here for many years, so when one of our luncheon group suggested here, we had to come back to see how it had fared.Warm welcome, and soon in our seats. Orders taken swiftly, and plenty of advice given by Giacomo (what a guy he is). Drinks served, and food arrived around 10 minutes later. All was tasty and warm food was served hot. Plates cleared within minutes of everyone finishing, and mains appeared 2 by 2 again around 10 minutes later. All mains came with individual vegetable sides. The food again was tasty and of good size, but not overwhelming. Ever so often during our meal Giacomo made sure we were all enjoying our food and drink in a polite manner. One member of our party had mentioned that the atmosphere would be improved with a song. Giacomo waited until we had all finished eating, then came over and serenaded us with 2-3 Italian songs. Great touch. A 2 course lunch for sub £10, with great service. We will be back soon.

Recently had a Birthday meal with Friends.
The staff are superb and excellent hosts. The welcome is very warming and relaxing.
The food was beyond believe, well cooked tasty and plentiful. My fish dish was the best I have tasted. My wife's steak was melt in the mouth. There is a passion and care from the chef and this was shown in the meals served. Well worth the price.
I cannot believe the restaurant was not busy. It deserves to be. I for one will be returning.
Thank you for a great meal. The highlight of my birthday.

The was a large group of us (9 including 2 children and one toddler) when we visited. The service was with a smile - perhaps a little slow but given the group size that's understandable and it also fitted the feel of the restaurant. The food was also fantastic, a great example of authentic, modern Italian cooking.
Having said that if you have any accessibility issues this is not the place for you with tight twisty staircases, narrow door ways and low ceilings. A big negative for me is the lack of baby changing facilities and the only reason the rating isn't lower is the quality of the food.

Found a great gem tucked away in the heart of Derby! Great price for a two course lunch time menu and the food did not disappoint..... Fish cooked to perfection and the sauce was a great accompaniment. Service was good and the restaurant is steeped in history. Worth visiting if you want somewhere nice to meet and eat at a reasonable price.

I had the best birthday there! The food was amazing and the wine was even better! The atmosphere was very romantic and it wasn't packed. The host even sang for me in Italian!! I will definitely remember this birthday meal for a long time and will visit anytime soon!

Had the 5 course menu here.
Decor is very quaint and welcoming. Nice dining area, not too cramped in between tables. Staff were polite, genuine and attentive.
Food was nice, cooked well and brought out in good time. Wine list was OK with bottles ranging from £20 up to £40.
Would definitely come here again.

Recommended to me by a local and it didn't disappoint, my wife also thought it was excellent, no wonder they've been around for 30years 👍🍷

Staff were very pleasant looked as if they enjoyed their job. Food was delicious. Have been going to the European since they've been open
L. S.
Nice fresh food, small portions but it was lunch menu and good value. Nice table overlooking cathedral. Friendly and polite staff. The little old italian guy was especially delightful. Would visit again
R. M.
Beautiful menu and food. Great service provided in the hidden gem in Catherdal Quarter. Happy to see them busy and working great alongside the help out to eat out scheme. Will Definitely return.

I've eaten here a few times, and it's a charming place with a great atmosphere. The staff are polite and not over attentive and the top man is a character that I warmed to. A really genuine chap, who loves his restaurant and his customers are king. Oh and the food is very good too.
C. T.
Really superb dining experience. Wonderful proper Italian cuisine at very fair prices, and excellent service from a great team. Couldn't fault it in any way, so can only recommend it highly. The table is yours for as long as you need it, making for a leisurely mealtime.
R. A.
What a lovely, personal, restaurant. The service here is impeccable! The food is lovely.
We had the set menu; Mackeral Salad to start followed by the Fish of the day in the lemon sauce! Really really good!
We had to have a dessert and my wife had the Tiramisu and I had the Sticky Toffee Pudding!
Really really impressed and will be back again!
R. H.
Really outstanding experience. Took my mother here for a treat and she loved it. Top notch food, atmosphere

Me and my partner have been going to the European now for 9 years and it never fails to deliver. The staff are fantastic and the food even more so. If you're after a romantic couples night or just fantastic food with friends I cannot recommend the European enough.
E. K.
Very cosy and friendly place. Didn't have a reservation but they took us in. Food was great as well. Would go back if looking for italian food!

Wow, wow, wow !! I walked in with my wife, I sat down at our table then I looked around the room. It was.......cute. We ordered our food (chicken liver pate starter, Risotto main, Lasagne main) and a bottle of red. Wow, wow, wow the food was fantastic, and I mean fantastic great wine and bread. You HAVE to go people, bang on.

Been visiting Derby on business... I asked the hotel about the very best Italian restaurant & they recommended the European... Best ever choice... Starting with mushrooms in garlic... And then chicken in mustard.... Mega fantastic... Tasty and tender.... Excellent value for money and superb service by Giacomo... He s a superstar!!! & he can sing too... Highly recommend this restaurant... A hidden gem in the town centre.... Ciao!!
E. R.
Great food and lovely atmosphere! Worth a visit.
C. P.
This is a lovely non-chain Italian restaurant in a picturesque 400 year old building. The first floor dining room gives a spectular view of the Cathedral. The menu is simple but the food is well cooked and presented. Mamma Mia!
A. L.
A surprise find with the ground floor hairdressers masking the smell of Italian cooking.
3 lovely courses, coffee and a bottle of Rose..Total GBP 52.00 for 2
Excellent value,lovely service.We will be back..with friends
E. H.
Got invited to this restaurant by some family friends, before we went, the friend who made the booking told me: if you dont like this restaurant you can feel free to pick somewhere else.
I thought, well i've never been here before so wouldnt know whether i'd like it or not so might as well give it a try
After the meal i couldnt thank this friend enough coz its one of a handful of restaurants that i would actually recommend it to other people!
Food was awesome, service was so great that we ended up taking a picture with the waitor - something we've never done before! Price is £25-£30 per person for a 3 course meal but would still feel like a bargain.
The cozy atmosphere meant that we were even able to make friends with fellow diners sitting around us whom we've never met before.
We live over 3 hours drive away from derby, never been to derby before, but would certainly visit this restaurant again in the future provided that the business stays open which i'm sure they would given their standard, so whoever the owner of this business, please dont ever retire!
A.
Beautiful food, the best filet steak I have ever had. The atmosphere is perfect for a romantic spot. Proseco is the best and main course brought by the chef. Please visit as you will not be disappointed.
D. D.
Excellent, friendly service and fresh tasty food. The setting and the building are lovely. Value for money is pretty good - about fifty pounds for a meal for two with wine.
M. J.
Had such a wonderful romantic dinner with my wife that we returned the next night and had the same meal. The waiter Jacomo was excellent and a rare treat for us. We will return the next time we are in the area.
K. R.
Had a family meal on a Saturday evening, as a large group with children we were seated quickly and served relatively speedily too. Lovely menu and delicious food. Would visit again. Worth booking.
S. P.
My favourite restaurant. Go there at least once every two to three months. Jackomo always makes us feel welcome and has a bottle of our favorite wine in stock. Giancarlo and co always produce wonderfully cooked meals and worth every penny.
A. M.
Fantastic place. Great food, wonderful ambiance and such a beautiful old quirky building. Thoroughly lovely experience. Already planning another visit.
J. B.
Hidden gem. Ideal for lunch or evening meals. Great value set lunch menu. Tasty fresh food, friendly staff. Giovanni even catered for an early evening family birthday party. Great place
A. M.
Fantastic restaurant with great staff. I eat in Derby a lot and this place gets a weekly visit. The menu is excellent with a large variety of choice; the best Italian in Derby for sure! Looking forward to many more visits in the future.
J. S.
Tried it because of previous reviews, the service and food was excellent. Well worth a visit.

Fabulous atmosphere . Lovely building. Great food. Attentive staff. Loved it. Odd name for an Italian restaurant though. ?
P. B.
Consistently good food and great service, the Italian waiter may be hard to understand but a real passionate and friendly chap!
I have been here well over 10 times and take clients and wife here and never fails to satisfy.
M. B.
Not very impressed. Christmas dinner on offer when we went. A bit mediocre. The lady serving was a bit brusque. May try an italian meal some time.
C. S.
An excellent range of "Italian Restaurant" food. It is freshly prepared and tasty. Friendly service. Worth a visit, but probably worth booking in advance.
G. L.
Went for a Christmas meal so not really representative of normal operation there. Food wasn't great and took a long time to serve. The staff were pretty good though.
P. G.
Not the most enticing entrance to a homely dining room. Generous portions of ok food. Better than one of the numerous chains which seem to dominate derbys dining options.
S. L.
Lovely Italian restaurant. Beautiful ambience, surroundings and food. Waiter even sings to you making for a perfect evening.!
E. L. F.
Nice food, not 100% italian flavor, but people are kind and the place is really nice. It worth a visit a have a meal here.
N. H.
Fantastic place, attentive service, great food. Seriously, the escalopes just melt in your mouth. Would recommend to anyone.

Great service, Awesome food, beautiful view from the window and a warm welcome from Jackamo bless him, you really feel like you are in Italy.

The food is very expensive (£2 only for the bread!!) and the restaurant insipid...I won't come back again.
