Amazing atmosphere (perfect for a date night) and very friendly staff. It's very popular among students here due to reasonable prices and authentic Italian food. Every pasta dish I've tried here was amazing and I would highly recommend the penne alla vodka. The only mediocre thing I've ordered was the spaghetti pizza but I guess I was just being too adventurous.

if you want pasta this is definitely a place to go 👌🏼 it’s a charming little restaurant in the heart of Durham. They serve massive portions of pasta and alcohol for good value. Servers are super nice and friendly.

I ordered the La Spaghettata pizza (see photo), which is a tuna pizza served with spaghetti, because it's pretty unique. The spaghetti was exactly like that from a tin of Heinz spaghetti and the tuna was way too salty, so it was very disappointing. However, the cheesy garlic bread was excellent and the service was good.

This seemed to be primarily a student restaurant. Approximately 80% of diners were students on my visit. This might have been because it coincided with the end of exam week. It was very busy but despite that they managed to find me a table after a short wait. The restaurant doesn't accept bookings, so in busy times it's usual to queue. The service and food were good. I thought it a little expensive for a pizzeria, but not excessively so. A glass of wine, water, garlic bread and main pasta dish came to £25. The menu has a good selection of pizza and pasta dishes. It's lively and loud. It's a good choice if you're looking for a local alternative to Pizza Express.

Visiting Durham for one night only, we were ambling around looking for somewhere to dine. The aroma of La Spaghettata was divine. Two adults, 3 children were seated with ease without a reservation. The food was absolutely delicious. The restaurant was very busy, but we weren't hurried. There was a pause between courses. There is a steep flight of stairs, but every step is worth the taste experience.

What a lush Italian! Tucked away up some stairs, with a welcoming, cosy, romantic feel to it. Great food options (I highly recommend the ribeye) and attentive service. Good for a family meal or a date night alike. Hidden gem.

Sorry to spoil the hype but... The service was prompt and the waiters focused but very polite on a very busy Saturday night. I was impressed with them! They have a huge demand so need a quick turnaround time and the manage it very well. However, I doubt that my £16 monkfish was fresh. My ordinarily v tolerant tummy wasnt v impressed. The house rosé was a concoction of blackcurrant juice mixed with vinegar. I upgraded to a Pinot Grigio which tasted like the house rose just a different colour and more expensive. The queue was utterly ridiculous so definitely please don't waste your time when there are so many other choices. If your student desperately wants to go, stick to pizza or pasta.The portions are generous for the pasta and you can have a doggy bag which is great for students. Arrive early before queue starts, don't order alcohol & don't try the posh nosh! As for great family atmosphere and perfect for date nights.... I guess it has been a long time since I was a student and I've been lucky enough to dine in some amazing places. £16 for 2 day old monkfish is just way too much! I watched students who were happy so perhaps it's best left to them.🤩 Very cramped and v loud so no chance for relaxed chat.

Amazing hosts and food . So many places want you in and out as fast as possible, and definitely in the days of covid bookings, but here they were happy for us to sit and have a drink whilst we waited for my son and his partner to turn up and even let us move to a larger table. The food was very good and unfortunately due to a Train Booking we didn't get to try much beyond the Pizza and Chicken Parmigiana between us. Well Hopefully next time . A bit disappointed at both the food and the service. We were a company of 4. We asked to be sat at a larger table as the reastaurant was almost empty, but the server ignored us and showed us to the far end of the restaurant and gave us a choise of 3 crammed tables. No-one really showed interest in whether everything was ok or not. We got a salad to share as a starter, but it was served infront of my mother in a very uninterested way. No side plates obviously, and we had to patiently wait to grab someone's attention. When they brought side plates it was only 3 of them. At this stage we were too hungry so inevitably one had to eat from the bowl itself. Each got their plate of food, I ordered the spinach and ricotta tortellini. In all honesty I have had the same exact tortellini from ASDA and it was about the same + a little bit of tomato sauce with peas and spring onion to mask the mediocrity. One of the only times I left food on my plate. At this stage I was very disappointed. The rest of the party said their food was good but I'm not sure whether they were just being polite.

Dim-lit restaurant for any occasion. A bit overhyped, but the food is still good. The service is questionable, some of the waiters are quite rash and not very cordial, but the wait time is quite quick and the beetroot ravioli are delectable.

Visited 8th March turned up at opening time friendly greeting. Did not rush when ordering plenty of choice on the menu. By 6.15 the place was nearly full that tells you a lot about the place. The service was efficient and the food was excellent and value for money. Cannot recommend enough.

The entire restaurant is on the first floor, up a flight of stairs so it is not wheelchair or disability accessible, unfortunately. The food was great, my sister and I had vegan pizzas (with vegan cheese) and my mum had a special of the grilled salmon on a bed of mussels. All very tasty. They also do gluten free pizza bases.

5 star for satisfaction. I love this kind of place - not pretentious or showy just bloody good. Ambience, service, food, and price are excellent. It makes such a difference when the service is this good: no wait to be seated or for menu; drinks requested soon after arrival but not immediately (allowing time to settle); just the right thinking time before returning to take the order; my request for a dish not on the menu was accepted without hesitation; food and drinks came promptly and accurately; checked satisfaction soon after receiving the food; attentive without being obsequious; and so on - perfect timing and manners throughout, and ALL the waiters had their eyes open for the demands of diners (a team). Excellent! The food itself was fresh, delicious, well portioned. The ambience congenial. The prices just right. It's not Michelin, but it is definitely 5 star.

Had our first visit to La spaghettata today. We thoroughly enjoyed everything the food and service was brilliant. We had the lunch time special and we thought it was great £5.50 for a pizza/pasta and for desert either coffee or ice cream. Bargain for the centre of Durham. Would highly recommend.

We ordered the Spaghetti Bolognaise - it was ideal in taste and portion size. Unfortunately, it did not come with the side salad; but fine overall. We stopped in on a whim as I had seen someone else say this was the best Italian food ever. That's some big boots to fill and unfortunately they aren't quite there. My wife had arrabiata pasta. It was fine. It's exactly like the quick meal I make at home with the left over chicken. Bit bland. I had gnocchi. This was better but still not up to the level we'd had elsewhere. If you fancy Italian food you could do a lot worse. Unfortunately you could also do a lot better!

This has become a regular must eat at place when we visit Durham. The food is great, the atmosphere buzzes without being intrusive and the service cannot be faulted (nor can the price). This visit it was packed and yet still the service stood the test. Attentive, efficient and friendly. I love it here !

So glad we chose to climb the many stairs to this restaurant for as soon as we entered we were made to feel welcome and the atmosphere was buzzing with customers obviously enjoying their time there. Even being so busy the service for our drinks and meal seemed swift. The food itself was very generously portioned, served piping hot. Note starters were much larger than expected so you could save by sharing a plate between two if budgeting. Free salad bar also a nice touch. For a vegetarian I can recommend their excellent vegetable lasagna, and my partner cannot rave enough over the meatballs & linguine. Ice-creams yummy also, only managed it by sharing one between us. This was a Thursday night and other restaurants looked quiet in comparison. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting Durham.

Went there for my wife's birthday on Tuesday 17th September. The atmosphere was cosy and busy enough to reassure us this was a popular choice. The food was absolutely perfect and the service was excellent! Sam our waiter was so friendly and attentive. I can't recommend this place enough. Deserves 5 stars at the very least. If we were locals, this would be our go to Italian restaurant.

It was lovely and not too busy (when we went there anyways). It has a very nice atmosphere and it was obvious that you were very welcome to come again, as a regular customer. The tables were lit with candles which they came and lit at your table, which was a significant part in the atmosphere. Without it, it would've just been a dimly lit room that you couldn't easily see in! The dishes were absolutely divine, my brother had to finish a lot of the food as the rest of us were far too full to eat anything more at all. The food came very quickly, and we were astonished by the speed of arrival, and we thought they had taken the food to the wrong table! The prices were good, not too expensive and not too cheap that you became suspicious of the quality of the food. The only downside is that it is definitely not wheelchair accessible, it being situated at the top of some 3 flights of stairs. If there was a kind of lift that could bring wheelchairs up to the door, which would also have to be widened itself.

I recently ate here with a party of 8. It was a tight squeeze to fit the table, but the food was fantastic, and the atmosphere was great. I've been here on numerous occassions. Last time I was here my ex partner and I had a wonderful evening. The food is authentic, the staff are friendly. The only problem is if you want a nice romantic meal and its for 2, you can't book in advance. And the queue is massive. We've been eating at 'Spags' for over 27 years and we've never had a bad meal. As well as the quality of the food being fantastic, Fabio and his staff are always very welcoming. Myself and my wife both shared Pizza with goats cheese, parma ham and rocket, and Spaghetti Bolognese...a bottle of house red, garlic bread pizza and salad, all for under £30 quid... great value... best restaurant in Durham City.

Got here 6pm on a Saturday and was greeted with a queue waiting for a table. We thought it must be good if this is the case and happily waited 10 mins to be seated. Service was good and drinks were brought quickly. We ordered Bruschetta and Pate to start, both were very nice. For mains we ordered steak in a white wine sauce and a spaghetti carbonara. The sauce was lovely and the steak was average however the carbonara wasn't the best, probably below average compared to other Italians in the area. Probably wouldn't go again due to other options in the area, however the prices weren't bad and the staff looked after us. Overall, an average Italian restaurant.

A very nice and popular restaurant located just beyond Durham market place. The food was very delicious with an authentic Italian taste, although I found my bolognese sauce to be a touch too salty. The portion size was very generous, more so than any other Italian restaurant that I have been to in recent years and the price for food was quiet reasonable despite the prime location (which usually affects the price). It would be wise to book a table to avoid disappointment, as when we left there were people waiting in the hallway to get in! The restaurant is located in the upper part of a terraced building, so you will have to contend with 3 flights of stairs to get there. If you have mobility issues it would be wise to call before going as I'm unsure if the have a lift up to their floor. All in all, recommended.
