Reviews of Gurkha Cafe & Restaurant, Authentic Nepalese & Indian Restaurant
J. E. P.
Very good Nepalese food, deliciously spiced, which I definitely would go for again. The service was fine. The ambiance was okay. Prices a little steep but it’s located in a touristy area so that’s to be expected.
K. M.
Visited here 18/05/22 and wasn't disappointed. Food was beautifully cooked and well spiced. My wife and I went for the Nepalese choices. Will undoubtedly visit again, highly recommend it.
J.
Food was amazing, not too spicy which I prefer with great flavour.
The chicken was juicy, naan went perfectly with the curry.
Service from the gents was alright, the lady had a much better approach but the food was amazing regardless
D. W.
Very much enjoyed this place. We had outdoor seating, which accommodated 2 tables. I thought it was a tiny place but inside it's pretty large and has alot of seating! I felt like we had great table service and the food was excellent.
We ordered a #3 and #4 under the Nepalese non-vegetarian section.
We also ordered the Everest beer which was great.
Y. S.
We bumped into this place by mistake on a Christmas night and did not expect to find it open nor did we expect to have such yummy food. Staff are super nice and friendly and the food is next level. Very much recommended!
K. N.
Food was delicious and really quick. The staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant was spotlessly clean. Perhaps not the best place for people with disabilities as the toilets are located down a flight of winding stairs, but overall, highly recommended
J. C.
One of the best meals out I've had in a long time. Staff were amazing, wonderful atmosphere and a place I will visit again for sure.
Food is really very tasty, and well presented. Well worth a visit if you're in the area.
G. M.
Tucked at the end of busy old town street, however what a place! It wasn't busy when we went a lunch time so we was the only customers there. Food is absolutely phenomenal. So so fresh, meat it succulent, vegetables are so fresh! I can't express how good quality the food was, amazing!! Menu is not big, but you'll find all traditional popular dishes and they also do selection of vegetarian dishes. If we went at dinner time i think the experience would've been even better, but the food quality i will remember and miss when I go back to England!!
J. B.
This is the one of the BEST restaurants in Edinburgh. Food was amazingly delicious, the portion of that lamb leg was beyond expectation! Even The garlic Nann was better than the other place’s. Their service was super good, and the atmosphere was very lovely. Highly recommended! Please if you are visiting Edinburgh, don’t miss this hidden gem! So authentic, quality food! Would definitely come back again!!
A. H.
Always visit here while staying nearby. Always a friendly welcome from staff. Our food was freshly made and delicious and beautifully presented and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. We will return. Highly recommend a visit here :) :).
S. K.
After our visit to the castle, we went here for lunch. We received a warm welcome by charming staffs, the food was excellent. The fish curry we had was really unique for us and we loved it, this is a special not to be missed. Momos and tandoor are good too. Great Nepalese food in Edinburgh town centre.
R. S.
It's was a Bank holiday weekend we were in Edinburgh looking for some Indian food.We went to Dishoom but there was a huge queue so took a chance going here .
It was really amazing !!!!
Being a foodie and someone who love spicy food it was a heaven. It a rare find .
with great food taste and ambience it will be a real joy for the taste buds .
The place is just before castle , a bit off the main Street but worth traveling 5 mins to have authentic food .
We ordered Chicken Jalfrazi ( it was spicy 🔥 and amazing ) , aloo saag ( surprisingly we found it better than chicken gravy ) with tandoori roti and nans .
The tandoori roti do come with butter ( not specified in the menu ).So if you want without butter you may need to mention while ordering.
Toilets are located in the basement , the walk to the toilet also have good posters on the walls.
A. C.
Amazing food. Naan breads were incredible. Really nice flavours
B. B.
The Indians food here was so good. Started with pickles and popadom. Also tried a Nepalese starter that was a potato cake with peas, carrots and ginger. Final course was an amazing chicken Tikka Masala. Tried it with regular rice and pilau rice. Got a red wine too. Highly recommend them. We ate every last bite.
S. C.
Superb meal again. The Nepalese food is so different . We eat here everytime we are in Edinburgh. We'll worth a try.
n. c.
My favourite restaurant in Edinburgh… authentic. Nepalese cuisine … momos are the best 😍
J.
No complaints to the chef as the food was excellent tasting and well presented. The service wasn't bad either just a little slow possibly due to being a busy evening.
Z. S.
Lovely food, with good portion sizes! (1 easily feeds 2) book ahead at busy times to avoid disappointment. Taste is more for a plain palette but nice never the less
S. M.
Tasty Nepali food in middle of Edinburgh!! Food was delicious , served on time even on busy days. The staff were polite and very friendly. Would definitely recommend 👍👍
I. M.
The Nepali moment is fantastic and the curry does not disappoint!👌
A. D.
This place is a gem of Edinburgh's dining scene. The chef is incredible. Assuming you can handle spicy food, do not miss eating here. The lamb choila is to die for! The saag is the best I've ever had.
I. R.
Day spent watching our son perform at the Fringe in Edinburgh as well as other shows, had not booked anything and was struggling to find somewhere, came across the Gurkha Cafe, had to wait 15 minutes for a table, was worth waiting. Food fabulous and staff couldn't be more helpful. No photos to show, unfortunately mobile had died.
S. S.
We went there twice in a row. The food is delicious. We ordered vegetarian food and it was tasty, quantity is good too. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone who wants to taste indian-nepalese food. Must try!
R. K.
Nice and friendly atmosphere. Menu is quite small but i always think that means good food cooked well. The choice was still good though. There were 3 of us and we all had a variety of chicken lamb and prawn starters (see photos ) and mains and all were delicious. Drinks menu was also good and wine was very reasonable price. Go here and enjoy it.
B.
Definitely the first place to go out for dinner.. But sadly they are not doing inside dining at the moment.... Still they doing collection and delivery... Will visit again for dinner when they get back to normal... Amazing service and quality food..
P. P.
Extraordinary food!
Spices were nicely balanced in everything we ordered. Loved their veggie momos (dumplings), dip was finger licking good!
Hightlights:
● Staff members were polite and welcoming.
● Value for money
● Nice ambiance
● Good Menu to choose from
● Vegan options available
● Amazing Dips
● Inclusive
We want to visit over and over again!
K. B.
Excellent small restaurant with fabulous food. Don't be fooled but the unassuming exterior this is well worth a visit.
A.
One of the best Indian/Nepalese resturants I've attended. If you're in Edinburgh I'd recommend a visit.
M. F.
Great food and ambience. Staff are friendly and prompt. Ordered the butter chicken, garlic naan, lamb kebab, chicken dumplings. Really really tasty, would visit again for those!
s. c.
It’s one of my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh. Nice and pleasant place. Staff are so friendly. Their momos and biryani made to visit them again. The sauce with the momos is speechless. presentation will be outstanding. Worth visit if your in Edinburgh
D. E.
Been here twice and it has been simply awesome both times. The chicken Mo Mo is possibly the best starter I have ever had anywhere and the Bo Khot Chelu is very tasty and the lamb was cooked perfectly. Best Indian in Edinburgh for sure. If you haven't been you need to go. (Only negative is the seating is a bit cramped and too close to the entrance, too many people walking close to you).
P. C.
Best Indian and Nepalese cuisine I’ve ever had in the UK! Really friendly staff, the chef even came out at the end of our meal chat us up kindly. 5/5
S. M.
Welcoming atmosphere delicious and authentic Nepalese and Indian cooking. Each dish is individually flavored and freshly prepared, full or color, aroma, and delicious taste! A truly enjoyable dining experience.
B. M.
I got veggie Biryani, rice and one Everest pint. Only one word, delicious!!! When I saw the place from outside I thought mmmm …not sure but everything was perfect, service and food. Highly recommended.
v. m. s.
Being a vegetarian it's really difficult to find a good Indian food. This one is just too good.
Date - 11/08/2021 20:30
Food - 5/5
Wait - 20 mins (good enough)
Staff - Ask them for preference of food , they won't let you down , really humble staff
100 percent recommended
D.
Chicken Madras and garlic naan was very good with the right amount of spice but slightly under seasoned which is a personal taste and not a criticism.
I would recommend and return here but the service needs to be more attentive.
S. H.
Tasty food with a decent choice for vegetarians. Prices reasonable for the centre of Edinburgh. Can get busy but the staff seemed to cope well.
F. a. F.
This is a very nice little restaurant on one of the nicest streets you will find in Edinburgh. The restaurant has a great Indian feel with lots of menu options to satisfy your palette. Don’t be shy to ask advice from one of their knowledgeable staff
B. B.
For someone who doesn't know anything about Nepalese food, this is the perfect place to get yourself acquainted. For starters, of course pommadom, and then there is plenty of stuff you can try. It all tastes good. Be sure you drink Everest beer to accompany your food. Namaste!
C. J.
Outstanding food, flavour explosion, great service, good portion sizes highly recommended its a must if visiting Edinburgh.
M. N.
Visiting from Australia. Really enjoyed our meal here. Great flavours & fresh. Service was good you definitely won't be disappointed.
E. A.
We waited for 1 hour to eat the food. It was our last day in Edinburgh and we wasted close to 2 hours just for eating. Huge disappointment.
E. L.
Great Nepalese restaurant. The lamb, the garlic naans and the lassi were absolutely delicious. Warm and friendly welcome. Wholeheartedly recommended.
R. B.
Good atmosphere with good food. Expensive though.
A. P.
A really nice breeze of Nepal in Old Town. Nice place, kind staff and relaxing environment. The food is so deliciuos and with a nice presentation. It can be overspiced for some people but if you don't like spices you can't be here! Prices are fine for the good food quality. Recommended for people looking for something different...
V. M.
The place was really busy when we arrived which meant we had to wait 15 - 20 mins on our booked table. Not a huge issue but there's nowhere to stand so if there are other people waiting, you end up standing right next to (and almost over) people already seated and eating. Poppadoms were a tad stale which was disappointing, but the pickle tray was fairly tasty. Veg pakora OK, but a bit heavier than I'd expect. I had the lamb karai and partner had the veg korma, karai sauce was beautiful but the lamb slightly tough. Veg korma OK, nothing hugely good or bad. Pilau rice really nice with fresh spring onions and crispy onions - nice touch. Service was good and pretty quick for how busy it was. 3.5 / 5.
A. G.
Excellent food and service. Highly recommend! Also book to avoid disappointment. Was fully booked when we dined, so pleased we booked ahead. Wonderful dishes and attentive staff. We will return!
S. W.
We were thoroughly impressed with this place and can see why they have such good reviews! The food was incredible and beautifully presented. The waiters were all very friendly and helpful, and the setting is beautiful. The restaurant was full but it wasn't loud. Next time I'm in Edinburgh, I'll be going back!
J. M.
Visiting from Canada, amazing experience! Great food and atmosphere- server was helpful and knowledgeable. From apps to coffee everything was spot on.
T. E.
Really great place for Indian and Nepalese food! This was the best butter chicken ever, while their house special chicken was really really good and authentic. The service was great and they even offer Nepalese beer with their food.
A.
Fantastic food, great friendly staff. A true dinning experience.
S. W.
Possibly one of the best meals we've had. Everything perfectly cooked with the Nepalese flavours being unique and the spicing on everything was balanced, clean and sharp. Nothing was too oily or overly heavy. All plates cleared leaving a happily stuffed family.
Tbh, I wish I lived in Edinburgh so I could eat here all the time.
T. P. N.
Best Indian/Nepalese food I've had since leaving Asia. If you're looking for flavourful dishes, come here. They also have standard chicken nuggets fish sticks, chip/fries for the lil ones.
L. M.
Lovely, authentic food. Good portions. We had the Momo to start and would recommend the chicken ones. They were delicious. Lamb shank and Chicken Jalfrezi for mains. Good quality fare. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
S. c.
The place was decent, we had the veg Momo's and pakora for starters. The Momo's were okayish and the chutney wasn't spicy, the pakora were actually nice but the quantity was disappointing. The main we ordered were dal makhani and paneer kadhai and both were nice but nothing special. The worst thing was probably the service, the people working there seemed quite disinterested and the starters took almost 40 mins to come.
S. D.
Lovely meal! Very popular restaurant. Highly recommend this restaurant 👌.
S. K.
Tastes like homemade food.
The service was very slow had to wait for an hour despite there being very few guests.
T. &. J. E.
Amazing Indian food! Really good butter chicken, mixed veggie curry and delicious naan. The portions are all generous and the staff were helpful and friendly.
Y. P.
Quality food with perfect quantity.
M. S.
Friendly and honest staff. Food was incredible. Atmosphere was very unique.
J. S.
Absolutely fantastic! The food was just lovely. Amazing flavour, great presentation and excellent service. One of the best sit down curries I've had! Would definitely recommend great quality at a great price. Don't waste your time with the fancy looking places come here to a comfortable setting and fantastic quality food.
D. J.
We passed here the night before last, Saturday. It was very busy and lively. So we booked in for the Sunday. It was very quiet but then it was a Sunday, in plague times...
The staff were lovely - friendly, genuine & attentive without crowding you. Even though it was quiet there was still a nice atmosphere.
The food? My partner doesn't really 'do' spicy and mentioned this as she ordered a 'medium' dish. The waiter said he'd get the chef to make it a bit milder for her. 👍
Our meals were gorgeous with subtle, multi-layered flavours.
Another guest expressed an interest in the paintings decorating the restaurant. The waiter spent a good 15 minutes guiding her round them, explaining the artists and subjects (he wouldn't have had time to do this the previous night when the place was rammed).
To sum up - very nice food, mid price range, in a nice place, provided by genuine people - what's not to like?
P. C.
Portion sizes are really big .. u should think and order … the food was really good .. recommended if u are craving Indian food .
A. S.
Following a quick search for nearby restaurants we came up against this little gem.
Popped in to check it out and book a table for 5. No issues and 2 hours later we arrived to be welcomed and taken to our table.
The food was excellent and this is a must if you are looking for tasty food.
c. o.
Wow! What can I say... Probably the finest Indian cuisine restaurant I have ever visited. The food was sublime and the staff are very warming. If you like Asian food you have to go! Recommend the the BBQ chicken kebab, incredible 😋
J. W.
It was the nicest Indian I have tasted.Pleasant staff.Cocktails a bit too strong.
A. C.
Tasty food, lovely presentation and fantastic service 🥰
j. m.
Starters, main and cocktails everything was amazing I am so glad we went to this place I did look at the desert menu and looked good we didn’t try any was too full. Highly recommended.
G. U.
Fantastic food and service. Will certainly be returning next time we're in Edinburgh
A. B.
Amazing food! The chicken Momos were one of the best I have ever had.
A. Y.
Very comfortable environment with very decent and beautiful food!!!
R. B.
The food is amazing and authentic. Really friendly staff too.
P.
I love this place. Delicious food and beautiful Rustic interior. My lunch set of chicken pakora, chicken korma and ice-cream (tho some fruit would be great with it) was the best dish of the trip ☺️♥️
D. W.
The food is great and on the whole reasonably priced. It's in a good location too.
However, when ordering the meal we were under the impression that we were being offered complimentary poppadoms, as is the custom in some places l - similarly this place gave us complimentary mints at the end of the meal - though this was never explicitly said.
Although they were good, they did seem a little overpriced at £1.50 per poppadom (including the sauce). This did put a bit of a dampener on the mood as we received the bill, which is why this is a 4 star review, not a 5.
S. H.
Food is nice but vegetarian dishes contain quite a bit of potato would have preferred more variety. Cooked to a high standard overall. it's presentation was good
A. M.
Nice authentic Indian and Nepalese food with extensive menu
R. J.
Really good food at reasonable price. Service a bit slow, but it was Fringe 😁
M. P.
Amazing food and friendly welcoming staff. We visited on 9th February for evening meal and it was an excellent choice. Waiter greeted us with a warm welcome and was very happy to see us. We chose Chicken Butter, Bhot Ko Chelu with Pilau Rice and Garlic Naan. Both meals were beautifully cooked and my Chicken Butter was the best I have ever tasted and the Poppadoms were perfectly cooked.
C.
Delicious food! I got the fish tikka with an iced tea and it was so flavorful. The fish is fresh and tender. You have to order the garlic nan too, it’s so good. Highly recommend!
D. F.
Ordered chicken pakora and a lamb karahi as a main. Superb.
C. V. D. S.
Amazing Nepalese / North Indian food. Large portion sizes, but a bit on the expensive side.
J. T.
Excellent service and food!
12 of us were wandering around Edinburgh looking for a place to eat. We were beginning to give up hope of finding a place with availability when we stumbled upon this gem, the staff were very accommodating to such a large group without notice and on a busy Saturday night. Not only was the service and management wonderful but the food was amazing and left everyone satisfied.
Don’t miss this place!
A. F.
One of the best Nepalese places we've been to. Try Momo for starters- definitely worth the wait, as they are made to order. Mains are full of flavour. Great service. We will be back for sure!
S. P.
Still excellent. Good choice of tasty and well prepared food.
w. s.
Had lunch here. Very nice lovely lamb shank with traditional Nepalese curry sauce. Served with home made whole meal Pratha bread. The food was excellent the service was excellent and very friendly and chatty. They also catered well for our 9yr old fussy eater. Top marks. ☺
V. M.
Absolutly delicius food, especialy the garlic naan. The waiter from Nepal was very pleasant.
C. S.
Excellent Nepalese /Indian food. A real gem to find this place!
B. A.
Excellent food, superb environment. Our meal was excellent, perfect portion sizes and the main was full of good meat and delicious sauce (more meat than other restaurants). Absolutely fantastic would come again.
P.s. the Kamasutra cocktail is amazing, definitely order that
R. L. (.
Brilliant . Best meal I've had in a long time.

Food is so good. Friendly stuff. Make a reservation, or you'll be sorry.

Best biryani in Edinburgh! Ridiculously good food, guaranteed great meal. Fresh and tasty, bread was also very fresh.

Is an authentic place with genuine Nepalese and Indian dishes. Friendly staff and pleasant service. Had several dishes but omitted to take pictures of all of them

It is my first visit to Edinburgh. I googled for an Indian restaurant aroud my hotel and I found this GEM. beautiful food lovely /friendly service by Mr.Shashi. Highly recommended. I am writing this review while eating in this Awesome restaurant.
L. W.
Wonderful food, we arrived with only 45 mins to spare until getting a train, they were nearly full but on asking assured us they would get our food to us quickly, which they did and it was fabulous!! Great service, great food what more can you ask for.
H. F.
Booked based on reviews and they lived up to expectations. Food was very tasty and staff really pleasant. It was busy but had booked. Our table was sanitised before we were seated. Would recommend this restaurant
B. F.
Fantastic restaurant a must to visit its bigger than it looks The food is incredible and the service is very good. They also have one of the best Riojas l have ever tasted.
H. W.
What a gem! Four of us went for a late dinner and we were blown away by the food. The meat was so tender and spiced to perfection.
Staff lovely, and restaurant spotless. Highly recommend.
R. D.
Found this place via Google reviews and wasn't disappointed. Food was very tasty, the resteraunt was busy but the service quick. Went on a Friday evening with our children and had an excellent meal - recommended.
P. C.
We are leaving today after three lovely days in Scotlands capital, last night we ate at Ghurka Cafe and Restaurant, it was delicious, we were lucky since we hadn't booked, the restaurant was packed. The food is tasty, well presented and full of flavor, the Garlic Nan was the best Nan we have ever had. A must to eat at.
r. m.
Lovely food first time here really enjoyed the meal
s. f.
Wasnt here..think a walked past..but know from previous visits...delicious 👍
M. D.
Had Beer and Chicken Biryani.👌absolutely worth it. Food is excellent
M. W.
Amazing Curry's though if your not good with spicy, I would go for the masala or korma.
J.
Decent Indian food, service was excellent though.
S. v. V.
This restaurant is amazing! My partner and I ate here many times when we were in Edinburgh last year, and we will definitely be coming back. The food is excellent in every way, and the setting is lovely- especially after a fresh snowfall. I hope that they don’t change anything ever. This place is great.
D. W.
Even though I only had a Chicken Momo (a sort of dumpling/gyoza that I was informed had a 15min wait) whilst waiting for the rain to stop, it was quite nice and the staff were very accomodating.
P. L.
Reviews on here are all correct as in the food was amazing, really delicious. The reason we didn't give 5 stars was because the staff were not very engaging and we didn't feel very welcome, which was such a shame.
G. T.
Great place, friendly efficient staff. My vegetarian korma was absolutely delicious. Could not fault the meal at all. Everyone enjoyed occasion eminencely. Food amazing.
A. M.
Great food and great service. Highly recommend. First bit of fish pakora I've enjoyed. Had chicken saag and keema na'an which were both spot on and the coconut pineapple rice was superb. The Ghurka lager was pretty good too.
K. V.
Great food, great decor- felt like I was in a restaurant in the Himalayas! One of the most authentic places I have been to in the UK, food is AMAZING, also the best momos I've had in the UK. So glad I found this gem in Edinburgh!!
J. K.
I rarely give 5 stars to any restaurant, but this earn it. So f****ng tasty
C. H.
Excellent Indian and Nepalese food. Really tasty and well cooked. They also do a yummy margarita! Great value too. Highly recommend.
S. S.
Great food & service. The chicken momos were particularly delicious.
R. H.
Very nice food, a bit pricey though
N. P.
The food tasted good, the staff was polite and the portion size pf the dishes ordered was overwhelming! Loved this place and highly recommend it for those who want to try Indian/Nepalese food.
H. C.
Excellent as always. One of our favourite places to go. Delicious food and friendly, welcoming staff.
j.
LITERALLY the best food available in Edinburgh. The Indian and Nepalese kitchen here is amazing, and the portions are great. I was actually full after a meal, which never happens. And for those who can't handle proper sized portions, take the leftovers home. I swear they will still taste amazing the next day!
S. G.
Truly Unbelievable restaurant, my wife and myself were blown away by the presentation, the mind blowing flavour and the portions were quite substantial.. The best curry I've have in the past 21 years... I whole heartedly recommend a evening there.. 19/7/21
S.
The food is so savory and authentic to original Nepali taste. Discovered this on accident on a trip and ended up eating there 3 nights in a row.
b.
Great food, Good service too.
a. b.
Absolutely loved the food here!! I would strongly recommend people looking for good Indian or Nepalese food to visit this place.
Welcomed by extremely friendly staff and the food is delicious. The service is quick as well. They customise the food according to your taste if you have any special request. Out of our three days in Edinburgh, we went to this place for 3 meals!!
B. C.
We have been there 4 times and at variation of times in the year and of time in the day.
We have changed during this time to vegetarian, hence our pallet also differs now.
The greeting from the staff , the service was and quality of food is massive.
Can't recommend more.
Best in Scotland
A.
Tasty food, they have managed to replicate the original taste of most of their vegetarian dishes. We had paneer karahi and naan for main course.
K. R.
If you ever want to try momos or mocktails in Scotland, this is the place. Chicken Pakoda and Fish Fingers are the go-to favorites here. Do try them out. Reasonable pricing but takes time for preparing.
G. C.
Went there for a meal with my cousin who I have not seen for many years. Asked a few questions about the menu and wasn't sure so asked for a recommendation. The dish I chose was mild so I asked if it was possible to spice it to medium without upsetting the chef and ruining the dish. No problem with my request and the food was excellent. The staff were great and willing to chat also. Highly recommend for anyone wishing a good meal in town.
O. S.
Amongst the best curry houses in Edinburgh. Been quite a few times now with various visitors and the food was spot on every single time. Can't fault these guys. Oh and the customer service is superb - warm yet subtle and not ott. I'll be back, and probably more than once. Tried a couple of others for a change but keep coming back to this one.
A. C.
Nice Indian/Nepalese food of good quality, with a nice balance of the different tastes and seasonings. Pretty busy on the evening, but we were able to get a table for five. Atmosphere is ok, but could take some improvement.
L. R.
Came for a curry on Sunday night with my husband and son. Excellent food! We particularly enjoyed the homemade tomato and garlic pickle with the popadoms and the mains were fabulous - my husband's karai lamb especially stood out. It was also really great to see how careful the staff were all being about Covid issues - they used disposable menus, the staff all wore masks and they took our number when booking for track and trace.
A. B.
It is located near the Royal Mile in Edinburgh and I visited during a business trip after a busy day. The food was delicious and specially the momos. The dough was soft and the filling was perfectly cooked. The service and ambience was wonderful too!
F. K.
I have been going here for the last 3 years, I eat nowhere else when in Edinburgh. I've brought dozens of coworkers with me and none have ever walked away disappointed. The food is flavorful, well presented and portions are generous. An all around outstanding value that won't disappoint.
V. S. (.
One of my favourite restaurants in Edinburgh with a great menu and friendly helpful staff. I eat here 5 or 6 times a year and the quality of food and service is consistently good. It does get busy at the weekends but that is the price you pay for attending a great wee restaurant like this.
P. a. K.
I've had plenty of good Indian food so I was intrigued to try out Nepalese cuisine. This place does not disappoint. I ordered a traditional Nepalese chicken curry dish and the flavours were exquisite. I have to say that I think I like Nepal food more than Indian. Seems to have more complex and rich flavours, not just spice and heat (although that is disparaging to Indian food). All in all, a great bet for fun time and mouth-enlivening gastronomic event.
T. T.
Definitely one of the best Nepalese food I've had in a long long time. The food is freshly prepared and the staff is very friendly and helps very well in deciding some of the most tasty items from the menu. In case you are confused what to order, just ask the manager and he can guide very well on the house favorites. In case you are waiting for the train at waverly station, this is one of the best places to catch a meal as its very close by.

Cosy atmospheric and lively (on our table anyway) good variety of food and some Nepalese dishes I've not seen before worth a try. Great service and friendly staff. We were there for a team night out and despite the large number were looked after efficiently well...
M. M.
Good food - bad service!
Waiters are really pushy about orders. Are unsure about what they have in their hands when serving, have no clue when asked. Bill items are not exactly what ordered and served, but same price.
In the end, won’t bring the change (2£ out of 30), and become really unfriendly when asked for it.
Food is good, but definitely not great.
D. W.
Spent my 1st visit tonight and will most certainly be back, the food was so fresh and full of flavour and mains where huge portions. The best Spicy Onions I’ve ever had. Staff very warm and inviting and happy to talk over the menu.
E. T.
Food was delicious, had the chicken special and it was probably the best Indian dish I’ve had out! Staff was really nice too, definitely recommend!
D. A.
Missing Indian home food, we decided to have dinner here last night. Excellent food with real authentic taste. This reflects the authenticity of the spices used. Generous servings and excellent staff. And yes, the Everest Pint 🍺👍🏽
A. C.
Nice food. But the staff are very unfriendly. No real customer service. An example would be when I asked for the bill, the member of staff didn't acknowledge me, just looked at me and walked off.
M. D.
Have just finished a fantastic meal at Ghurka Cafe. Food was amazing- best Nepalese I have had by far and the restaurant had a lovely, cosy atmosphere. Would recommend to anyone looking to try some authentic Nepalese cuisine in Edinburgh.
J. D.
The dish is really tasty. But the pricing is quite intransparent (e.g. rice for the dish is an extra cost factor), so carefully have a look at the menu.
S.
Fitted us in on a Saturday tea time without a reservation. Great food, welcoming and helpful staff
S. R.
Absolutely fantastic food, and great service. We'll definitely visit again!
J. M.
Delicious! Very generous portions, I was having just two starters and delicious naan bread shared with my hubby and was plenty for me 🤣 definately will visit again!
A. A.
Great service and good food. Love this very spicy "piro khukura"
R. O.
During a trip to Edinburgh we got takeaway from this restaurant and we kept on coming back every day. The food was delicious and came in good sized portions and they were friendly and helpful every time we picked up our orders.
L. d. G.
We had the korma chicken en mixed vegetable curry, which is a lovely combination for 2 people. Garlic naan was so so. Try their Nepalese beer, very tasty. The staff must be working incredibly hard, because even with a roaring restaurant they still managed to serve us very quickly.
P. a. T.
I consider myself somewhat a Momo connoisseur and these were probably the best ive had, Mains were really tasty exploding with flavour , definately recommend visiting this place as staff were friendly and helpful
H. V.
Very nice place, relaxed atmosphere (and service)
Lovely Gurkha beer, the poppadoms and dips were amazing. I found the Madras not hot enough, however the taste was great and unlike what I tasted before. Lovely.
G. M.
Great food dished up with good service. It's a popular place for good reason, I try to visit here every time I visit Edinburgh. The menu is extensive and everything I've tried has been delicious. Thanks for another great meal.
K. C.
Excellent service and food.
They manage to seat my party even though it was crowded and we hadn't made reservations. We did have to stand around and wait for 15 to 20 minutes though, which is to be expected.
It is not frowned upon to order and share food among the table. I recommend doing this as you can taste a broader selection of the menu doing this.
J. L.
Genuinely friendly staff who care about you enjoying your meal. Food was fantastic, from mild curries for the kids to authentic Nepalese curries. Reasonably priced...... well worth a visit.
s.
Amazing food .There is no staff except one girl who always stand at the counter.
Gurkha serves amazing food but I think they should have more staff to serve food and for welcoming the customers.
J. H.
Great food, came in good time, great atmosphere. 5 stars
J.
Amazing food, butter chicken was a huge portion I couldn’t even finish and the garlic naan was amazing too!
D. B.
I love this place. Friendly staff and excellent food. Price tag may be a little higher than what I usually pay for this type of cuisine but the quality is there and staff very friendly. If you're looking for something a wee bit different in Edinburgh it's worth it.
A. S.
Amazing Indo-Nepalese food and good hospitality. The place is spacious, styles a traditional look, and staff is very courteous. The Nan and butter chicken tasted really good and potions were well sized. Top it up with some fine drinks and you have a amazing afternoon in Edinburgh old Town! Recommended to everyone visiting Edinburgh!
a. f.
I visited this little gem of a restaurant on 29th January 2016. I hadn't booked but they squeezed me in anyway. I was really happy with this as it was 6:30pm on a Friday night and they could have easily turned me away but the very friendly staff greeted us with open arms.
I opted for the chicken madras which was just absolutely divine. Spicy and loaded with juicy chicken. At 11.95 it was a bargain. Also opted for the local beer called ' The Gurkha' also a bargain at £4.95 for a 660ml bottle (that's well over a pint) Given this is a city centre location the prices are very competitive and the food really was beautiful. The staff were all very tentative with genuine warm smiles for all of the customers.
I will definitely be visiting again and would recommend this restaurant to anybody who is going to Edinburgh looking for a tasty curry and reasonable rates
Top marks for this fine establishment with lovely staff and food.
J. S.
This restaurant was amazing. The food just melted in my mouth. The flavours exploded on my taste buds. It was the best indian food I have had.
I would definitely like to come back here on my next visit to to this wonderful city.
j. r.
Lovely staff ..food was delicious , especially the starter platter for 2 ...yummy ..everything tasted really fresh .... great priced cocktails ...Highly recommened ...( only niggle BUT its just me been pinicky - the restsurant could do with a coat of paint ...needs refreshing ) Thanks for a great meal ..👍
D. C.
We visited here not knowing what to expect. Thankfully this restaurant was a nice surprise. Think Indian with a hint of Chinese. But as with most things that description doesn't really do it justice. Get the dumplings no matter what you do. Also make sure to try a small amount of the sauces as two of the three we got were lovely and tasty but one almost stripped my tongue down a layer.
Service was fast, efficient and friendly. Well worth the visit.
M. D.
We found this restaurant on line before our trip to Edinburgh. What a lovely restaurant, the food was delicious and service very pleasant. Only wish we had a Gurkha Cafe Restaurant in Wales!
A. G.
Found this lovely little restaurant hid away in the centre of Edinburgh. The Gurkha restaurant serves traditional Nepalese food as well as your normal Indian food. The restaurant is nice and cosy with very friendly and helpful staff. Good value for money and good size portions.
B. J. M.
Cosy wee place, the staff are friendly and the food was amazing. Not too spicy but with loads of taste! Definitely recommend this place.
f. l.
Nice place to eat, Tibetan and Indian food. Main courses are well served
D. O.
Ate there last October, very late with the review. This was a wonderful restaurant both for the food and how it looked. We will definitely eat there the next time we're in Edinburgh. Try the Gurkha beer with your meal it was delicious!
A. L.
Most of the food was delicious, but the Nepali selection is very limited. I asked for dhaal bhaat, a Nepali staple of lentils and rice (eaten twice a day by many families in Nepal). The waiter pointed to an Indian dish, reassuring me that it was the same, but it was nothing like it.
L. M.
Great little restaurant. I had Chicken Tikka Masala, garlic naan and a shrimp appetizer. All delicious. I was in Edinburgh for 4 days and I ate here 3 out of the four. That's how much I loved this place.
i. m.
Stopped to look at menu, restaurant looked really busy which is usually a good sign, so went inside to be greeted by amazing aromas. Friendly staff found us a table for two.
The madras is described as HOT....they are not lying!!!
The lamb was tender and plentiful, and the sauce, although hot was still tasty. Thought I was being a wimp until the waiter confirmed the cause of my red face by stating ' the madras is hot, yes?'
My wife and I left contented, fully fed and the chilli buzz was great!
Would recommend 🌶🌶🌶👹🍺
C. L.
A Hidden Gem, beautiful food, served by very helpful staff, I thought we couldn't get in due to the steps and having a wheel chair, We were taken in the side door. Well worth a trip from Newcastle, will call again when in town. 👍😋
L. C.
Great food good service.
We had mixed grill between us with nan bread and rice enough for us.
K. O.
Lovely food, big portions and great cocktails, reasonably priced and lovely staff
L. S.
What a fantastic meal we had here on Monday 9th December 2013. The staff were so friendly and professional, but it was the food that we all loved... nothing was left and in our party of 6 we all had a different dish.
Fantastic and highly recommended
O. B.
Amazing food. They got our order wrong but I think this was just an honest mistake, otherwise great.
R. W.
Really yummy food for all tastes. The service is great and the guys looking after us that evening were really friendly and accommodating. Located in the historic approaches to the Royal Mile its well worth a visit.
K. N.
Me and my girlfriend found this place last year (2012) on vacation in Scotland and really liked the food and the service. So when we were on vacation in Edinburgh this year (2013) we had to go back for a visit. The place was jammed packed but we just had to wait a few minutes for a table. What we noticed was that the menu had changed and there were fewer courses, other than that everything was perfect. The service was good even when they had a really busy night, didn’t have to wait long for our drinks or the food and the food was absolutely delicious. If you ever are in Edinburgh and like Indian food then a visit to Gurkha Café is a must.
I also think it was really cool that the knifes are the same shape as the Kukri.
C. L.
Delicious food and friendly server. Manager was very friendly too. Only thing I probably didn't like was that there was an additional cost for the sauces if you order the popadom. It was also not stated on the menu that there will be an additional cost for that.
A. A.
Visited 5 times over 4 years. Consistently good food.
L. C.
A regular Saturday lunch time treat for us. The staff are usually really helpful and polite. I'd avoid festival time though as it's hectic. The food is delicious especially the chicken mo mos , and tandoori chicken .
L. S.
Amazing food! Spice levels as described, very tender chicken, great poppadoms. Fast service, attentive and friendly staff. No complaints at all.
N. K.
What a fab little restaurant tucked away near the Royal Mile.
Food is just incredible and so much flavour, and not small portions.
Hot means hot, but still full of flavour.
Great staff and very reasonable price - Starter, Main and 660ml bottle of beer £23.
S.
The perfect Nepalese experience.
Forget the indian dishes, try the Nepalese - ask for extra hot and hold onto your seat.
Family business so great people - chef is charming and clearly talented.
A true 5*, our favourite Edinburgh family restaurant.
P. K.
The chicken momos were good and the lamb biryani was good too.
E.
This is a wonderful place for anyone seeking high quality Indian or Nepalese cuisine to be had in authentic and relaxing atmosphere.
The staff is very polite and complaisant.
The cutlery and dishes looked high quality, the food was tasty, portions are just the right size, although the dessert could be bigger. One main and a side will stuff you well.
The food is stylishly presented.
It is not very expensive.
Would totally recommend to young couples or anyone else who has fond feelings for India or Nepal.
We have ordered:
* Chicken Tikka Masala - to that moment the best I have ever had, and believe me, I had many.
* Chicken Korma - not as astoundingly good as Tikka, but still nice. I think this is just due to us prefering Tikka in general
* Chicken fried momo - we have finally found a place that serves momos fried
* Garlic naan
* Sweet lassi
* Some carrot dessert, can't remember the name
M. A.
Lovely authentic Nepalese food. Momos were great. So was the sweet lassi. Also enjoyed the main courses of saag paneer and a lamb dish. Friendly staff and a cute restaurant.
J. S.
Had a beautiful lunch at this lovely restaurant. Food excellent . Great value. Pleasant staff. Well worth a visit.👍😁
S. M.
Superb food, great service.
All the dips with the Poppadoms were excellent, Vegetable Pakora starter was fantastic and the Bhuteko Khasi Lamb was absolutely superb.
Great service too, so fabulous all round.
Thoroughly recommended, 5 🌟.
A. A.
Good Nepalese food, good ambience and good service
W. L.
Got a chicken jalfrezi, softest chicken I've ever had, highly recommended, nice and cosy restaurant.
A. P.
What a great find! We stopped in and were happy to find a place not completely jam packed with people and that also had great food and friendly service. We had the vegetable pakora, vegetable korma, garlic naan, pineapple coconut rice, and the best chicken tikka masala I have ever had. It was all very well done.
I. C.
I had the Gurkha roast chicken special, absolutely beautiful tasty food. No food envy although tasted everyone else meals and all excellent. Staff friendly. Good value food. Highly recommended.
K. M.
Very quick service and lovely food and the girl with the jumper very friendly!
S. P.
Friendly staff, quick service and tasty food. Not that different to Indian cuisine though...
R. K.
The food is delicious and place is very nice with friendly staff. We ordered the butter chicken with Naan which we still remember when go to any restaurant. Really recommend it.
C. K.
Fabulously tasty food in a good portion size... reccomends to whome looking for authentic indian food...
C. C.
Very tasty, authentic food. Staff good. Decent beer.
S. P.
Great food, had this chicken inside lentil was outstanding. The place is very popular and Ina very busy location. Staff is friendly and accommodating.
p. r.
One of the best nepali and Indian restaurant. Nice location near Edinburgh castle. Best food. Nice atmosphere inside. Overall best.
Parimal ramani
L. T.
Very accommodating to dietary needs, delicious lamb biryani and tandoori fish!
T. J.
Inside the slightly quirky interior you will find excellent, quality and tasty Nepalese food. We arrived late on a Saturday evening and the service was also without fault.
T. v. d. B.
Cosy restaurant with Nepalese dishes. Particularly enjoyed the dumplings (starter) and the (traditional) mango ice desert. The quality of the main dish was good, particularly the meat.
I would recommend this place.
M. R.
Expensive, but I’m giving 5 stars because of the Gurkha chicken, which comes on a bed of daal, and the coconut/pineapple rice. Skip the lassi—mine was average. I wish I’d tried the tea instead (January 2019)
J. S.
This is the epitome of a 2.5 star restaurant. Decent (but overpriced) food in a high foot traffic area that benefits from tourists hearing about good, authentic Indian food in Scotland and wanting to get in on it. Overall, not bad but certainly nothing unique and definitely not much value. Squished together tables, transactional wait staff, and extra charges for everything, but if you don’t feel like walking further up the hill it will do!
J. M.
Last minute to book a table last night well absolutley bangin deffo be back good size portions great service from staff fair price too 👌🥘
T. V.
Costly place. Not worth eating, wont recommend.
Staff didn't made us aware that they are gonna charge for even drinking water and chutneys which are generalised items and usually comes with specific dish. Food quality and taste wise is ok ok. Too much hyped.
E. S.
Amazing food, made to order so there's a bit of a wait but it's so worth it!
A. M.
The home of my favourite curry dish in Edinburgh: Poleko Bhale Kukhura. (with Coconut and Pineapple rice)
Another great visit and service was as good as ever. I highly recommend.
S. K.
Food and service were very good. If you want true Nepalese food and not just Indian (or regional), recommend you ask your server, as the curries and a few other things are specifically Nepalese, while other items are not.
S. C. (.
This place serves food that is closest to Indian n Nepalese Cuisine, while the other restaurants are Anglicised versions of curries and nans. The curries here are yum, also try the momos and Naan bread which is perfectly done, crisp and light.
C. M.
had a great meal of Chicken Biryani ,Chicken Tika Masala and Paneer Makhini..very tasty and just the right amount of heat !! The staff were very friendly and accomodating...good value for money in Edinburgh
B. M.
Absolutely great meal. From the starter to the main meal. The tastes are varied and subtle. I love the Gurkha Restaurant. The place is busy and the service is still quick. Thanks for a lovely meal guys.
G. S.
Absolutely delicious, well priced and good service. Recommended.
C. B.
One of the nicest restaurants I've been to in Edinburgh. Great atmosphere and great staff. Best Chicken Tikka Masala around!
T. M.
This place is fantastic, went to Nepal and fell in love with the food there. The Gurkha Cafe has great staff, polite and friendly, and the food is great. Especially love the chicken momo.
A. A.
Found this place a year ago. Had to come back. Live in Kent and here on business.
Great service and stunning food.
You owe yourself a visit
This is now my 4th visit. Always a warm welcome and the food is crazy tasty and good value.
s. a.
Both food and service was truly great. I could see how popular this place must be by the number of people I saw coming in at dinner. Worth every penny.
E. W.
The food was incredible; one of the best saags I've had, and the garlic naan was amazing. Service was great, very nice and attentive when they needed to be.
R. C.
Delicious! But sort of confused about the whole "chinese" thing on here/the website. It's a Nepalese Indian restaurant with a pretty standard selection of dishes executed very well. No sign of any Chinese stuff.
J. K.
Excellent food, the best on our trip!
K. P.
Lovely food, good value. One of our party (8) didn't get their main until 10 minutes after everyone else & we were given a suitable discount.
T. S.
Very calm restaurant, haven of peace and quiet in Edinburgh centre. Very polite understanding service and a good kitchen where the chef put his love in the dishes he cooks!
M. A.
Fast service, delicious food and great value for money! Staff were friendly and made us feel welcome. Would highly recommend and will be returning
a. j.
Awesome host. Great food. Fantastic wine. A bit higher end on price but completely worth the money. The ambience is awesome too

G.
Excellent Nepalese restaurant!
P. C.
Best Curry ever , more expensive than the average curry place I’ve been , but worth every penny .
And I actually don’t pay compliments very easily been in the trade myself.
Well done
A. R.
I had the best curry that I have ever had here! The chicken was beautifully tender and the sauce was delicious. I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit.
P. c.

Its a must, visit Gurkha everytime i go Edinburgh..love it , lovely food , pleasant staff & reasonable.
I. H.
Simply amazing. All dishes were tasty and generous. Lovely cocktails. And nice staff. Recommended.
S. M. I.
Went the in 2016 with out a reservation and the only could take us for a starter, it was awesome so that was the place we had to revisit which we did on 22 Nov 2018 and we were not disappointed one bit, tastes and aroma were to die for.
r. d.
It's good curry with a twist. Not too expensive for Edinburgh though tends to be packed and you must book for busy times of course.
K. k.
Real authentic and freshly made dishes. Excellent n highly recommended thanks guys
A. D.
Delicious food and lovely staff. Had to stand for a few minutes while the table was vacated for our reservation but the food and service was flawless
S. J.
Excellent Food with authentic taste..
S. P.
Easy to access from the city centre. Friendly staff, made us feel welcome. Food was nice. Staff came in from time to time to have a chat. We liked the place.
R. O.
Superb. If you want decent well.priced food in old town Edinburgh go here
J. M.
Excellent food, value for money in the centre of Edinburgh. I like Nepalese food and have eaten it in many places in the UK, but this was a good one.
C. S.
Excellent food stayed in Edinburgh for 3 nights went twice the food was beautiful the 1st time and they some how bettered it the 2nd time. Great service and friendly staff
G. V.
Chicken Mo Mo was delicious. Worth the 20min wait to have it fresh. Jalfrezi was wonderfully spicey. Definitely will try for another visit beforewe leave Edinburgh
P. L.
Have had a very nice meal at a reasonable price within easy walking distance of the station. I will return.
A. D.
Very delicious food and quick service, highly recommended
K. W.
The food is so good - we ate here two nights running.
D. H.
Great authentic cuisine and outstanding service. Nepalese dishes were on point. Dumplings were awesome.
S. A.
Delicious and reasonably priced meal. Try the Lamb Khutta, one of the best curries I've ever eaten.
M. G.
Excellent masala that if you want it hot just ask and they won't let you down!
Great starters and sides. All round excellent experience and will be back.
L. W.
Delicious curry with a good atmosphere. Slow service but it was during fringe so very busy. Would recommend.
S. T.
Authentic food, good ambience but staff could be more courteous.
I. W.
Fantastic food, we arrived unannounced and were 8 people, they made space for us and we were very happy hungry travellers who left relaxed and full of very tasty authentic food.
R. J.
Lovely meal, very authentic
B. F.
Tasty food and lively staff, the nan bread is the best I've ever had. The lamb dishes are also excellent.

Absolutely fantastic food. The staff were good and didn't hover over you. I will definately be coming back.
M. K.
Ate here last night and was not disappointed. Huge portions of delicious food and good service. Especially liked the cone shaped papadoms.
J. S.
A favourite of my wife and I. Always experience excellent food and service. Would definitely recommend a visit.
D. E.
Was completely packed to the point of being somewhat uncomfortable, and service suffered a bit for it. The food was good, but didn't really prove that UK curries are so superior to ones elsewhere.
R. H.
One of the best meals I have eaten in a long time staff are very friendly a little gem of a place
J. S.
Awesome Food,I took vegetarian options and it's good.it's worth full for the money spent.
I strongly recommend this restaurant
L. S.
Really tasty food, well priced, friendly staff.
D. P.
Good food, good service, and good location. I tried their lamb Bhot ko chelo with garlic naan and it was really. Rest was ok
D. M.
Good Nepalese cuisine - something a bit different if you like Indian food . Restaurant has been there for years and I've always enjoyed it
S.
Delicious North Indian rotis and curry! Absolutely recommend the Butter Naan, tasted better than even in India!
A. A.
Veg momo was good. I ordered paneer but the food was very rich giving a bloated feeling....taste and quantity was good
S. B.
Relatively expensive, but the food and service are good. Not the best South Asian food you’ll ever have, but definitely not bad.
U. #.
Tried 4 Indian restaurants in Scotland and this was the best! It felt like we were dining in India! Cheers to Shashi and team!
A. G.
Ended up here as couldn't get in anywhere else. What Good luck. Amazing food and service. Not your usual curry joint!
B. G.
Asian kind of food but not too tasty worth the money
C. D.
Amazing selection of both Nepali and Indian food, great ambience and extremely helpful staff. Highly recommended!!
R. M.
My lamb was extremely undercooked. It should have been falling off the bone, but was tough as hell. I was in company and didnt want to make a scene by complaining!
G.
Food and service was good. Place felt a little cramped when busy but I guess its what they could do with the space. Would go again.
D. D.
Amazing food, friendly staff and nice decor. A must if you like good Nepalese food.
A. K.
