Reviews of Mamma's American Pizza
E. K.
First off, who doesn’t want pizza from a place founded by Gold Leader?
Seriously though, the staff was incredibly friendly, helpful and fast. We were having a hard time finding food after a late arrival into the city, and these guys happily took us in about a half hour before they closed. We got a couple of their Star Wars themed cocktails (Please get the Rogue One, it’s amazing)
This pizzas were very good and very fresh flavors. Please check this place out on your trip!
B. H.
Not a bad little pizza joint. Not the most amazing pizza you’ll ever have but pretty good. Only Coors on tap (very American) so don’t expect a decent beer unless you go bottled.
D. M.
Surprised by this place, we had 2 steaks with chips on the sizzling stone that turned out to be 2 massive fillets!! Really good meat and super cheap for what you get.
The style of pizza is not what I would go for.
But my experience was definitely positive. I can only recommend the meat... Will not be disappointed ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A. H.
Visited for a pizza and a beer on a luvly sunny day. Friendly staff, seated outside on pavement. Ordered beers and a 14ibch B B Pizza. Enjoyed our Peroni and a Coors Light. Our pizza was freshly made and delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit :) :)

Amazing pizzas in the heart of Edinburgh!!
The food was exquisite... 🤤 These are pizza the way I imagine in the USA. Tasty and generous portions. One large pizza to share was more than enough.
It is located only 5min from Edinburgh's Castle and the place is amazing! Amazingly nerd, may I add.
The staff is genuine, nice and very attentive. I don't think a better service had been possible.
I would totally recommend it to anyone visiting the city! It may not be traditional English food... But it is worth the visit!!
R. G.
Incredibly friendly staff, fab location, great pizza including gluten-free pizza and even a selection of gluten-free beer.... we were ecstatic. We are always concerned with cross-contamination at pizza places (my teen is Coeliac) but all was good. Would highly recommend. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Edinburgh!

One of my favourite pizzerias in Edinburgh. I've been visiting the Grass market since 1989 and always try to fit in a visit to Mamma's. Normally excellent only this time my pizza was more charred than the others. The taste was more charcoal, but it will not put me off visiting next time. It's the best pizzeria in Edinburgh for a reason

Me, my dad and our dog really enjoyed our dinner here. Very friendly and helpful waiters and waitresses. The food and desserts were gorgeous. Thank you to all the staff for making this such an enjoyable experience. Highly recommended by us.
C. H.
Good gluten-free pizzas. Really recommend the pastrami one!

We came across this little gem layer in the evening after being on a busy day of shopping etc. The staff were very friendly and accommodating as we had a shorter time left to eat due to them closing at 10pm.
This certainly did not mean the food was rushed. The lasagne was amazing with so much flavour and my partner had the spicy meatballs on a bed of spaghetti. Wow nice portion size that had us comfortably satisfied. The lager shandy even tasted amazing after not having a proper draught beer for so long. Great wee place with a great atmosphere in a great setting for the warmer evenings 😀
C. B.
Great pizza! Really enjoyed a late lunch here. It was pretty quiet but the food was great. Nice service too.
M. N.
This place did not disappoint. Good customer service, good food, the decor and story behind this place is incredible. Honestly, for a pizza place in Scotland, not bad at all!
K. S.
Dined here on numerous occasions over the years whilst visiting Edinburgh. Their pizzas taste great and there is a good selection of toppings, including some unusual ones, such as haggis.
Service is always warm, friendly and efficient.
Definitely one of my favourite restaurants in the city.
T. R.
We were looking for good food and saw this pizza place recommended. From the outside it might not look very special - and the menu might make it look a bit like a generic chain but don’t judge a book by its cover!
We had the bb king pizza and a create your own and both were delicious. The toppings were really high quality. The medium is big enough for two to share to be honest. The fries are also very crispy.
Would definitely return!
A. M.
The brownie and ice cream was mouth watering. The pizza and garlic, while not looking good, had pretty good taste.
G. T.
Really nice fresh pizza base and toppings. Gluten free options are great also.
S. M.
Wow! Delicious food and a great location.
Loads of choice, spotless inside and very friendly staff. A cool interior with loads of seats outside in the heart of Edinburgh.
S. M.
Amazing choices for gluten free! Pizza base made in house which I've never come across before, delicious. The chilli cheese fries were absolutely incredible, I got the veggie option and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Took the rest away in a takeout box. Thanks for marking the menu well for allergens! One of the only places that had bothered. 10/10, try the fries!!
J. B.
Great food, and great service. Visited on a week night, was seated straight away. Good choice of pizzas and a long list of toppings. Pizza was great perfectly cooked and arrived within about 15 minutes.
M. B.
Went for first post lockdown outing with the bestie and it was such a nice experience! Grassmarket as always has a good vibe and we sat outdoors with a bit of privacy at. The pizza crust on the bbq-d2 was incredible, thin and crispy and the Caesar salad was the best either of us had ever tried !! Not many choices on draught beer or cocktails but it still did the job. Waiter was a nice guy making sure we had everything we needed :) thanks for a wonderful time!
S. D.
A great place all round. Great history of the ownership linked to Star Wars to a a great snug place to have some of Scotlands best pizzas. The staff where incredibly welcoming and the place was spotless. My top tip is to go for the hot pizza - full of flavour and good cuts of meat it really was a treat to my pallet. Very reasonably priced and a good independent feel I can highly recommend a trip to this great gem in the heart of the Haymarket area of Edinburgh.
P. M.
The mixed green salad was the real surprise here. Deep bowl of fresh, varied greens with crispy veggies and a light vinaigrette. Pizza was good too. We did okay there for lunch!
S. S.
Service was amazing. They offer a large gluten free menu but ….I am super celiac sensitive and had a reaction. Wanted to share with my sensitive friends to watch out.
T. S.
American as you can get. Great pizza and gluten-free friendly. Pizza and alcohol. Highly recommend. The owner was really nice, too.
K. R.
I would recommend sticking to pizza or pasta here. I had the lasagne with chips which was fantastic however the side salad that also came was not the greatest (raw onion, peppers and mixed leaves with an unknown dressing). Husband had the burger with chilli and chips. The chilli was the best bit about it, the roll was a tough ciabatta that he couldn't eat and the burger was overcooked. It was the busiest time of year though so you can forgive a little for being rushed off their feet.
M. B.
I normally am an Italian pizza person but I really was pleasantly surprised by the food! The pizza had a really nice crust and bottom and topped with delicious ingredients.
L. M.
I love American style pizza and this pizzeria makes amazing pies. The staff is very helpful. The Sweet nectar pizza was good but the more "basic" one with three types of cheese was even better. Extra large pizza for two people is very convenient.
K. R.
I am from NJ and came with my family to have some "American pizza" on the 4th of July :). Garlic bread was amazing and service was excellent. Kid friendly place. Cheese pizza was excellent, the veggie one could have had a bit more kick to it. The crust is amazing.
C. D.
We have not been to this restaurant for years! It's been here since 1985 and it is still a great place for pizza. Some places suffer when the festival is on, you get poor service and sub-standard food, but not here. Everything was great. It is also good spot to sit outside and watch everyone go bye.
B.
The Gluten Free rage here is honestly amazing, my partner was so made up with this place because she didn't feel restricted, the pizzas where massive and great, but the wings, unreal.
A. L.
Brilliant gluten free pizza , handmade, no shop bought bases, full of flavour, nice crispy crust, knowledgeable staff.
N. A.
Been coming to this place for years. One of our must visit places in Edinburgh. Great pizza and reasonable prices with excellent friendly staff.
S. C.
Great 14" pizza. Served outside in lovely sitting area. The Coors light was superb. Plus a wee Peroni.
A. G.
Really really great vegan and gluten free pizza with a nice selection of GF beers. The dough was one of the best I encountered - baked perfectly and just very joyful
C. S.
I enjoyed a lovely pizza and cocktail in the sunshine this afternoon. Staff were very friendly, attentive and welcoming. Will definitely be back and will recommend to others!
J. C.
Another visit to Mamma's. Food great as always. Staff always friendly and approachable. A credit to Paul's management skills. First time my wife had been there and absolutely loved it. Clean plates all round. Should be back in Edinburgh again in a few weeks. Definitely be back to Mamma's.
A. P.
Tale of two sides of the force!
Nice decor, staff friendly enough, location great in heart of Edinburgh.
Pizzas are reasonably priced, 8 for a small with a few add ons isn't crazy in Edinburghs city centre however the quality let's this place down and stops it being a 4/5*
The biggest part and only negative was the fact that the chef hadn't cleaned the knife in-between dishes (must've been a hotdog or something) as there was what can only be described as mustard on my pizza. If you have allergies BEWARE. I'd like to think this was a one off, and I'll be back to try, especially once the festival starts, but it is not a ideal thing especially as allergy awareness is at its highest.
Mammas- please do better. The potentialis definitely there!!
J. M.
Amazing GF and DF pizza! First time I've had pizza in 5 years due to my food intolerances and I was so pleased! No idea what the cheese is but it's delicious. Good portion sizes, friendly/attentive staff and we sat outside soaking up the atmosphere in the Grassmarket!
b. c.
Amazing gluten free pizza, fantastic service would highly recommend
P. R.
Very nice little pizza place, recommend by a taxi driver! Good food, great service, just a wonderful place to be to get something to eat.
Z. P.
Taking advantage of the heat, we chose to sit in the square. Grass Market, a very active place. Very good attention.
Z. F.
Truly beautiful pizza!! Friendly staff and great service. The restaurant is really cozy and has a lovely friendly feel. As my partner is wheat intolerant he has found it hard to find pizza he can eat and impossible to find good pizza. Mamma's American Pizza reminded him of how good pizza really is! Anyone who is gluten free should come here!
J. W.
Absolutely loved the pizza here. My waitress, I think her name was Antonella, made sure that my experience was enjoyable and frequently checked on me to see if there was anything I needed.
R. O.
Great truly authentic American style mid/deep pan pizza. If you like your pizza thick with plenty of mozzarella and a strong and flavoursome tomato base then look no further. A great selection of dips and house beers to keep you watered aswell
Highly recommended if you're in town and fancy and something abit different from the traditional Scottish menu.
M. T.
Fantastic food and amazing staff, great wee bonus for star wars fans! MTFBWY

I have been in search of the perfect gluten free, dairy free pizza ever since I stopped eating both years ago. I feel like I have finally found it at Mamma’s! We went twice while we were in Edinburgh and my partner and I still dream about the delicious actually MELTED vegan cheese which made me feel like I was eating a real pizza!! The sauce is delicious and you can choose from so many toppings. If you have food intolerances and miss pizza, Mamma’s will satisfy your pizza craving and then some!!
T.
Had a fantastic experience all thanks to our server Danny. One of the best waiters I've had in recent times, he went the extra mile and made sure to check with us the few times we forgot things from our order. Food was pretty good and drinks were up to standard as well but the service was by far the best factor. Only area of improvement would be that the hand dryer in the toilets felt like a chain smoker breathing their last breath on my hands.
L. S.
The gluten free options are amazing, the pizza was very tasty and the staff friendly. Very cozy and familiarly atmosphere.
R. J.
Lovely place for a family dinner. Staff were superb. The only let down was that cocktails and beer felt somewhat watery...
B. R.
What a fantastic place, great food, great ambiance and friendly staff.
Plus it's a locally owned, family run business.
Perfect really.
O.
Good food. Good drinks. Attentive staff. Great location.
What more need to be said.
R. R.
Awesome place to grab a bite. Lots of food on the menu. Great value.

Hard to get a pizza delivery so wrong. The chocolate brownie with ice cream cake with no ice cream so just dried up brownie. The rocket salad came without any rocket but just disgusting muddy tasting red vine leaves, although when I tipped it upside down I found about 4 tiny rocket leaves and about ten pomegranate seeds. The 9" veg pizza was nearly warm but ok and coke ok so for £21 that's a rip off as far as I'm concerned. Called them to ask about ice cream they left the phone on the table for 5 minutes while discussing it... Then couldn't help as it was through Just Eat where as other places are happy to re deliver missing items when it's close to my home.

Oh no words to describe the hospitality from the staff. Katrina is amazing and the smile throughout the service is a five star ✨. The portions are really huge and delicious. Definitely a must visit for those looking for a warm homely made food made and served with Love.
C. S.
We didn't eat here but the food they were serving looked delicious. We had drinks outside and the young staff were excellent. 2 of my party were cold and they were given fleece blankets.
A. C.
Fantasy in service Greta pizza and drinks the girls (sorry didn’t get names) great job. Well done.
D. C.
Lovely place. Food was excellent as was the service. Very busy and the pizzas are a lot for one!
J. H.
Prime beef burger was excellent. Best burger I tried in the area.
L. C.
Best pizza I've had in a long time, we were walking to the train station when we came across this place and so glad we did
S. P.
Good place for dinner. Pizza was our choice. The pizza gluten free base was very tasty and a nice service did the dinner awesome.
Doesn't speak spanish but try it ;)
s. j.
Good pizza. Obviously much better than the usual chains. Great service. Prompt.
G. w. R. B.
Great pizza and friendly staff. Also have gluten free pizza.
A. G.
I've not had pizza since going gluten and dairy free so this was first on the agenda for our jaunt to Edinburgh. It did not disappoint. My wife thought her fake cheese didn't taste as good as mine but I think that's because she had spinach and I had chorizo! Heard someone at the next table ask the waiter to check that they actually had been given a gluten free base and that about summed it up - you (almost) can't tell the difference.
J. C.
Always nice food and service here! I had a calzone recently (forgot what the menu's name for this was) and it was nice and saucy, usually I find they're dry in other restaurants.
L. H.
Went for the first time today with my little boy as I wanted to try there gluten free pizza. The lady who served us was lovely and although we hadn't booked she got us a nice outside table straight away.
The pizza was really good and she couldn't of been nicer.
I. P.
We just enjoyed our first experience of Mamma's. Lots of options on the menu and suggestions from staff. The Pizza was very yummy, generous amount of toppings. The service was PERFECT! The staff were very attentive, thoughtful and aware aware of what is going on, they even brought out bowls of water and chicken for our dog 🥰
J. G.
Great family friendly pizza restaurant in the heart of Edinburgh. You can choose anything you want on your pizza from a large range of options (including haggis!) and go half and half on a larger pizza with a friend to have different toppings on each half. Sweet potato fries are also worth trying! Very friendly staff and a quirky atmosphere with some Star Wars themed decoration – the place has been here since 1985!
D. T.
We visited here on 18th Sept. The restaurant was busy so we asked if we could sit outside. Our server was Katie, she was kind, efficient and had good banter. The food was delicious - proper cheesy American pizzas!! If we lived in Edinburgh we would deffo be regulars. Thank you Mamma's and thank you Katie !! 😋
J. T.
Fantastic food, the nacho starter was a perfectly sized sharer. Their unusual way of a stone serving plate drew lots of attention, and the taste matched. A rum cocktail served by a wonderful server finished the evening, will definitely be back.
S. B.
The pizza here is excellent. There are lots of options, even for vegetarians! Their veggie pizza was great.
They are child friendly as well, my daughter had a hot dog and sweet potato fries and loved it.
There was a bit of a wait for food, during fringe, but we had starters and were just fine with the wait - so I’d get starters if you’re hungry.
There was a mishap and my husband’s and daughter’s meals came before mine. Luckily the servers put my order in immediately and gave me the pizza on the house. Our server even came to me and personally apologized in person, which I didn’t expect, but greatly appreciate.
The pizza was worth the wait and their excellent customer service is why I’m giving them a 5 star review. Some of the best customer service this American has ever experienced in the UK - thank you!
J. C.
Fantastic pizza - excellent value for money. Staff were all lovely too - very helpful and friendly. We will be back!
D. L.
Popped into Mamma's for a birthday lunch and weren't disappointed!!We shared the Cheesy garlic bread for starters. Followed by an amazing 14" shredded beef, peppers and onion pizza and a lovely homemade lasagna. Was nice to see many people out supporting businesses again. Thank you Paul and your team,, we will definitely be back

The table space was a bit cramped inside, but it was manageable. The pizza was absolutely delicious. Instead of buying individual pizzas, my husband and I bought a larger size and enjoyed it together. This was a better deal and it was completely worth it. The pizza is stone baked and delicious. The toppings were fresh and we had leftovers for another meal for a very reasonable price. When we return to Edinburgh, we will definitely visit for dinner again.
L. W.
Staff is nice. We took a medium pizza for 2. It was good
D. B.
Fridays are Pizza Day . I took my family to this Cosy, busy, but friendly little place in Edinburgh. No need for reservations of eating out there if you are vegan or have Gluten Intolerance. Everyone can have something to eat there. Portions are generous too.The best bit of our experience, was my almost 9 year old daughter, invited by the chef to the kitchen for a hands - on, one - off, "Inservice Apprenticeship of how to make pizza, which she took home. He really made her day. We Thank You and the staff, for empowering today's youngsters with survival skills.
H. O.
Mamma's is great. We have been several times and it's always a treat The servers were fantastic. I am gluten and dairy free and didn't remotely feel like a burden as is often the case in restaurants. They cater for all requirements without batting an eyelid. Their friendliness made to feel very welcome. The pizzas themselves were, as always, delicious. Bases were just right with lashings of well paired toppings, but not to the point of causing collapse. We took some home and they were still yummy cold or reheated. 4 stars instead of 5 though because the chefs were not on the ball the other day. The front of house were dealing with the chefs inattentiveness very professionally and the food was great but the chefs themselves needed to pull their weight more.
N. H.
Really great food, good beers and great service! They were also really accommodating for our group too, which was hugely appreciated! Thank you 😄
L.
My partner and I went here for dinner last night and we absolutely loved it! The staff are such a credit to the restaurant, they were so friendly and easy to talk to, while also being so attentive despite how busy it was. Our food was also amazing. We can't wait to come back :)
M. Z. C.
Everything was delicious, and everyone was very nice
M. S.
We only had drinks sitting in the outside area. Service was friendly. Great day for sitting outside.
T. O.
Fantastic place Pizza was absolutely amazing so good infact I would go as far as saying the best I've ever had, would highly recommend.
J. D.
Friendly staff. Good food. Tasted the Scotsman pizza. Delicious!
R. A.
Love mamas pizza been here a few times now, staff are always really nice and I like the feel and atmosphere of the place. Pizza is awesome and it's absolutely heaven for gluten free, vegan and vegetarians! Chips are also excellent with good portions, you won't leave hungry.😁
H. !.
Great service, great atmosphere, great gluten free food. Looking forward to a return trip with my other coeliacs.
T. E.
This place is wonderful!! With the need for a gluten free and preservative free diet, this place was a welcome respite. The owner years ago came up with their own gluten free pizza dough that isn't just bought flatbread. It has wonderful flavor and rise to it and with their sauce beats everything we have found in the states. The staff was wonderful and thoughtful. Sam, our waitress, was full of energy and willing to make our stop in as pleasant as possible; both nights we were there. The place has a Star Wars connection due to the original owner being part of the New Hope movie. So the flavorful delicious drinks have a creative theme. If you want off the main tourist path of the Royal Mile and a well priced meal in a local eatery you will not regret a stop here. We will be back!!
C. W.
Fantastic pizza, one of the best I have ever had! I went for a gluten free base (so good you'd never know it was gluten free) with vegan mozzarella (again, can't believe it was dairy free) and the sweet nectar topping. The local cider was brilliant too. All the waiting staff were lovely, friendly and never made us feel like anything was too much. They very kindly wrapped up our leftovers and we took them on for breakfast the next day. I can't get my head around some of the lower scores on here - did these people eat at the same place??? You should be so proud of such a great business and producing such fantastic food!
K. R.
Great food and amazing service! Will defo be back. Good vegan options also
g. w.
Slightly clumsy pizza, where quantity of topping beats quality. Bad Vege pizza was just raw veg - with a bit of the (excessive) spicy beef from mine finding it's way on as a nasty bonus. Good location, nice staff though
A. K.
I had the BEST pizza from here! I collected a takeaway from here and the restaurants was packed and I can see why!! Definitely book to avoid disappointment. I recommend the four cheese pizza it was to die for, the perfect pizza for a coeliac in Edinburgh
S. M.
The food was like Episode 1, pretty good but could've been better
The service was like Episode 8, not great but doable and I cant fault it unless I'm being petty
Unfortunately your evacuation chute wouldn't flush out so there was a Rogue One left in there, sorry x
J. S.
Amazing food and atmosphere. 100% reccomend.
C. L.
Great venue, lovely house cocktails, fantastic food
K. F.
The food here is amazing. I had a pizza, and my girlfriend had the lasagna. We both believe it was the best we've ever had - no exaggeration. We both travel extensively, so I have a lot of experience in Italian food, both from Italy and its incarnations elsewhere. Something about the sauce was just amazing. The neighborhood is a must-see anyway, so we recommend visitors stop here for food.
G. S.
Pizza was fantastic, they suggested we shared a 16" but I was hungry and went for the entire thing, but you could share pizzas as well if necessary. Only issue is they only have Coors light from draught.
M. R.
Great Pizza place in Edinburgh with a rich history. The food is excellent with the pizza being slightly more American based than what I would be used to but it is an excellent take on it.
Good serving sizes, the price was good and the servers were very friendly. Would be back next time we are there.
A. T.
Homely food, ok cooking (bit overcooked, burnt edges) friendly staff
T. S.
Lovely Vegan pizza & vegan meatballs spaghetti
C. B.
An error with starter was quickly corrected. Bill was adjusted without asking. Friendly knowledgeable staff, clean premises food was hot presentable and delicious hopefully be back in future
L. R.
Short walk from my hostel it looked like a great place to grab some lunch. The seating is all a bit cramped, but the service was great and staff were friendly.
I ordered some wings with blue cheese sauce for a starter and got one of their 12" pizzas for my main. The wings were really nice, and just how I liked them. I disagree with other reviews saying they were really greasy and unappetising. I've had problems at other places with wings being dry but these were hot and moist upon serving, and the blue cheese sauce was pretty nice.
However, the pizza is a different story. I wasn't a fan of the dough at all, it reminded me of the base from a store bought frozen pizza. It was also drenched in so much cheese that I had to scrap most of it off. Now I'm a fan of cheese, but this was too much. The chicken on it was very dry as well. It could just be the type of pizza I ordered, so I'm willing to go again and try something else.
S. H.
Pretty decent experience. Food was good, pizzas were very tasty and kids menu was good value. Service was alright, staff friendly but asked for some water and it never arrived and they were slow to clear tables. Downsides for me were soft drinks at £2.40 which was a glass of somewhat flat Irn Bru so very overpriced and ladies toilet felt a bit exposed with a basic lock and when someone was trying to get in it didn't seem like it would take much to burst it.
S. B.
Great pizza. Loved it. Service was timely and friendly. Chicken wings were a bit of a let down as they were the dry wings that don't come dripping in that gorgeous wing sauce I'm used to (my fault, I should ask more questions). The pizza definitely made up for it though. Decent local beers too. Fair prices make this place a hot spot!
F. S.
First visit for many years and i remembered Mamma's fondly. Pizzas were decent but I felt that starters were a waste of money, really not up to much. Staff were lovely though.
D.
Well established, don't waste your time with any of the chain places. Head here and get something made properly. The panzerotti (choose your own filings from a large selection) is worth it alone.
S. P.
Myself and my girlfriend went here for an evening meal last weekend we were over for a few days and heard it was good, staff were very friendly and helpful, with regards to the food, I’d say it was one of the best pizzas we’ve ever got and we are big pizza eaters so we know what’s good😋would definitely recommend it will be paying a visit again next time we’re over. Keep up the good work 👍
T. E.
Our Edinburgh experience was topped up with lovely pizzaz, including incredibly tasty gluten free pizza, lovely French fries and olives! Visited this place few years ago, it was great, and again, it didn't disappoint us this time. We would definitely visit it again whenever we are in Edinburgh.
Lovely pizzeria with an amazing stuff. Thank you so much guys!
K. L.
Oh my goodness so the menu tries to hide it from you kinda but this place does the BEST vegan AND gluten free pizza I've ever had. The crust is amazing, the sauce is to die for and the vegan cheese they use is Pretty Damn Good. The location is prime as well because who doesn't love the grass market? Honestly the only thing I would change is the disturbing artwork on the walls. (We also got the veggie nachos with the veg cheese - 10/10).
S. R.
Empty plates all round! Lovely food and good atmosphere. Typical prices for the local area.
C. B.
Food was fantastic, all cooked fresh and to order. Staff were attentive and accommodating. Good location and reasonable prices.
Highly recommend.
s. c.
One of the best pizza places we have been to. Amazing food, amazing service and the portions are so generous. Will also recommend strawberry icecream.
G. Y.
Solid pizza place with good outdoor seating. Dog friendly too - gave our furry friend a bowel of water and a separate bowl for some food as well! Friendly staff and all -
J. F.
The waitor that served us was super friendly and really helpful. The service didnt take too long and the pizza was actually amazing!! Sometimes when you get takeaway its fatty and greasy but this was like a REAL pizza. So delicious. Not too expensive either! Will definitely be back :) thanks for an excellent dinner
C. H.
Great pizza. Dough is well cooked, sauce is flavorful, and they don't skimp on toppings. Sat outside as it was a nice day and the patio is off the road. Very nice staff and ambience. Would def go again.

Authentic American pizzeria located on the outskirts of Edinburgh city centre. Portions are generous and there’s loads of choice, whether it be the pizza toppings or other American favourites. I had the Mamma’s Sweet Nectar Pizza, which was very good and a nice change from the usual Italian-style pizzas you get in the UK. The atmosphere is laid back and the staff were really friendly too.
P. C.
Delicious food at a great price, ate here on our first night in Edinburgh. It was a quiet Thursday evening but the service from a girl working there made it a very enjoyable experience.
Would recommend.
R. C.
First time here. Picked at random from Grassmarket establishments based on menu outside. Fairly early on in the evening and it was quiet. Staff were friendly and the food was good. I had garlic bread and Mozarella then a surf and turf pizza. Also had a beer and a coffee. Food was freshly cooked and delivered quickly.
I'm not vegan or pushed to gluten free, but I could see a good range of offerings for those who have that requirement. I have friends that I will recommend Mama's to on that basis as I'm sure they will be satisfied.
R. D.
Small, cozy, good food.
They do gluten free pizzas which is a miracle for a coeliac, but this is still a great place to have a wheat dough pizza.
Google says it is "£" but it's more pricey than that. I would say "££". You are going to spend 20+ for two people.
I. L.
The pizza here was lovely & the staff were absolutely fantastic. They are a credit to there job I must say. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a noice casual meal. We chances upon it & it was a great decision!
M.
Quick and polite service, delicious food and reasonably priced! I visited while covid-19 measures were in place and I got the impression they were being very careful. Screens were in place between tables, and all staff wore masks. Will definitely go again.
n. d. (. F. P.
The staff were incredibly helpful and the restaurant has an scannable track and trace system using QR codes.
The pizza is excellent and the place is owned by a Canadian actor who starred as Gold Leader in the Star Wars movies.
M. W.
The food was delicious. Best gluten free pizza I've ever had, and the waiting staff were so friendly and nice! Will definitely go back next time I'm in Edinburgh.
E. G.
We've been coming here every time we go to Edinburgh for years, in fact it was my husband's favourite place to eat when he was wee. Friendly staff, tasty pizza. What's not to like?
T. L.
I want to be fair to my experience as well as your business so I’ve rated 3 stars on this particular experience. The food was stellar, buuuut- I’m unfamiliar with not cutting the pizza. This was a surprise, but whatever that’s not going to stop me. Deliveroo was probably the biggest quip I had. The gentleman delivering did not trust that one of my guests was associated with my order, trying to play MI6 investigator with where this food belongs. Kind of disrespectful when it’s evident that this order belongs to the person that greeted him at the front of our hotel, as we were watching the app to know when he’d arrive. Maybe because I used my Irish mobile number??? However, it was a very prompt delivery. Otherwise, I’m satisfied with the product and I’ll probably try it again the next time I’m in Edinburgh. Good stuff and entertaining menu items.
G. C.
Very cozy restaurant in the middle of old pubs. Basic but good American-Italian food and drinks.
The spicy meatballs could be spicier in my opinion, but there are some spices on the table to help out ;)
I also liked the decoration.
P. E.
Such a great place! Amazing food, really good value, massive quantities and very friendly happy staff. Loads of gluten free options for our coeliac family member. I would highly recommend
A. S.
One of my favorite places to eat!
M. W.
I've never been before but I will be back. Being able to sit at outside tables, under the sun, pretty perfect way to spend a lunch with friends. Staff are all so lovely and friendly and prices very reasonable.
J. K.
Delicious pizzas, great staff, this is a fabulous place to go with family, friends and colleagues. Love it. I have never had one tiny gripe or criticism from any groups or friends when I have taken them to this place. We're lucky to have this place on our doorstep
R. S.
Awesome little place will be back soon. Met my son who is a first year student at Edinburgh Uni with wife and his sister. Spent ages looking at to many restaurant menus before both children finally agreed to try here.Wasnt my first choice to be honest. Service was slick and as professional as you get. Nice decor diner with great atmosphere and great place to people watch the rich variety of Grassmarket "wildlife".
Food was awesome!!!! Great freshly cooked good portions and friendly attentive service. Cant fault the place. Will be back soon. Thanks guys my family's highlight of the weekend.
Z. Ü.
I just saw an Tiktok where this pizzaria draw an picture of a dog with a pizza inside the mouth as an joke because the man who wanted that pizza wanted to have an joke for his 6 year old child because he loves jokes and you really drew it (sry for the bad english im from germany) I give you a 5 star review just becazse of that. <33333
L. O.
I think that Mamma's is more about how many unusual topping you can add to your pizza than about the base. The base was too thick and crunchy this visit. I gave up trying to use a fork and knife and just picked a slice up.
We had a cute little corner table at the window which was nice.
I had a buy one get one free voucher from my Spree book which made it a cheap tea.
Nice but not as nice as I remember it the last time.
S. B.
As an American, it wasn't quite what I was hoping for. The salad didn't have any noticeable dressing. I ordered takeaway, so maybe something was forgotten. The Pepperoni on the pizza was really thick and tough to bite through. Im used to thinner cut, crispy Pepperoni. The garlic tomatoes on the pizza were good, but the amount of garlic was overpowering. I did like the crust! At least half of the chips in my nachos didn't have anything on them. Regardless, the veggie chili was delicious.
A. B.
Best gluten free pizza ever. Very good choice of gf in the menu. Super friendly and helpful staff. So sad we only found this place on our last day. Would definitely recommend.
M. H.
A couple weeks back my boyfriend and I were going to the tattoo and were rushed for time (completely our fault)! We came across Mamas in Grassmarket and asked if we could order takeaway. The staff were rushed off their feet and were doing a brilliant job seating everyone while still taking their time with each person.
They whisked us in and when they found out we were pushed for time they made sure our order was put in fast. We stood outside to wait and the staff were constantly making sure we were good and even doubled checked our order wasn’t too far off without us even asking.
The food was AMAZING and we will definitely be back (to sit in next time). But I just wanted to leave this review because the staff were fantastic and attentive despite us being the inconvenience of pushed time/takeaway during their busy dinner time.
Fab team!
S. D.
We went as my Daughter wanted GF pizza, the place was great, the pizza was fantastic and I will definitely go back. The service was great too, nothing too much trouble and the waitress was polite, friendly and always had a smile on her face, highly recommend.
N. H.
Located under the castle in grassmarket, a fantastic family orientated restaurant if you like pizza n tex mex this will be up your street cuisine. Staff are so accomodating and friendly!! Moderately priced but a lot for your money and you can takeaway what you can't manage. To all you star wars buffs this is the restaurant founded by "Gold Leader " so I'll leave the puns there but it is a great atmosphere!! Enjoy!!
A. R.
Amazing pizza. We went here and ordered 2x xl between 4 of us and ended up taking 1x of those home! The spicy tomato base isn’t so spicy but leaves a nice warm taste in your mouth! Definitely would come back!
N.
Good pizzas, nice staff, affordable prices
N. T.
1st meal out after the 2nd lockdown and it didnt let us down. Lovely to sit in the April sun and enjoy good food and a drink.
Attentive, pleasant staff, who were happy to help you. Though they struck to the COVID rules, they were excellent at working through them with you and not making it feel like a chore.
M. F.
Oh no, have to choose how big and how many and what toppings. Great fun, not expensive, gluten free option, marshmallows, egg, onion marmalade, and slightly more traditional toppings. There's a standard pizza chain at the top of the road, walk past and give this a try. Not the world thinnest tastiest pizza bases, but stone baked and being fun and different.
PS.. The espresso was very excellent.
M. K.
Definitely the best gluten free pizza I've ever had. The base was to die for. Multiple gluten free beer options as well. Spectacular place. If you're gluten free and in Edinburgh, you have to go here.
S. C.
Mammas was one of my favourite places as a student - well located for lots of pubs afterwards and tasty pizza. There's a wide choice of toppings, plus side dishes like salads. Between two of us we had a medium pizza and a salad and that was a good amount for dinner. The restaurant is a reasonable size - my last trip was a Tuesday evening at 1730 and we were the only two customers - service was friendly and prompt.
V. H.
Delicious pizza, great gluten free pizza base - thicker than some places make it. Nice service, cool superspecials. We had the Matador (hearty meaty) and the veggie superspecial with half parmesan and half Danish blue, was lush! Recommended for gluten free
A. E.
Just been after the last lockdown. The staff were so friendly! The service was amazing and the food was great! Great vegan options. Would highly recommend this restaurant!
D. S.
Visiting from the US, and had Mamma's twice. Excellent and friendly service, authentic ingedients and fabulous crust. My wife, who is very sceptical of European food in general, loved it and is a huge fan. The Star Wars tie-in, which is totally true, was also a nice added bonus!
L. L.
A friendly Americann-style pizzeria, it has a great character about it, and loads of unusual and varied pizza toppings. Really generous portions, and gluten-free options, make this better than the standard high street pizza shop. I also like their steak on a stone, which is a treat. Desserts are delicious as well.
V. B.
Amazing pizza however slightly dark on the crusts, doesn't look like much from outside (not the inside) something to give a spruce up as would attract more but we really enjoyed it!
L. A.
Lovely welcoming restarant. So good we went twice! Gluten free pasta & pizza was awesome, oh and beer too! Highly recommend, will be back soon mamma's!
Lea & Martin
E. B.
Always been one of my favourite places in Edinburgh for food, pizzas mostly. Been going there for probably about 15 years on occasion, more recently. Staff are polite and nice. Pizzas are great.
C. W.
We come to Edinburgh for the Fringe Festival every year and our first meal is always here. Incredible food and wonderful staff. The pizzas are out of this world, oh, and definitely try the sweet potato fries!
C. C.
Visited yesterday. Food was absolutely delicious. Staff very friendly and service was great. Felt really safe as all covid restrictions in place. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be back.
V. C.
Pizza and service was nice when I lived there, last time I did a visit it wasn't so much. Pizza was like a shoe and service rude, I guess everyone can have a bad day. In any case it used to be a great place to get a nice pizza close to all the pubs.
d. g.
Really good place for pizza. Good atmosphere.
A. K.
Amazing resturant with one of the most friendly staff I ever met. And the food is great as well. I highly recommend this restaurant. Thank you.
G. A.
Really great pizza, freshly cooked and flavorful. Dough is soft and tomato is tasty. We sat inside because it was a rather cold day and it was cozy and warm.
S. M.
Friendly staff, good food, excellent location and good value on 9" pizza we had, hard working staff and owner during peak festival time
A. K.
Amazing authentic pizza. They do lots of Vegan and Gluten free options too.
C. J. B.
Great staff and fantastic food. Great choice of drinks and flavours all set in an pleasant environment. Not bad on price either with you getting a lot of pizza for the price.
I. D.
Great pizza, location and staff. Choose your own set of toppings or one of their own ones. Been going there for 20yrs and it's always been really good.
G. F.
Really good pizza in a lively part of edinburgh. We were a big party and the staff was great and looked after us, even after we got a bit loud and boisterous. Really welcoming and as I say, great pizza
I. M.
Nice italian restaurant where all the food is prepared fresh. Massive range of pizzas on offer means you can keep going back and have something different every time. Not too expensive, also if you are a gourmet society card holder you can get good deals.
G. P.
Been here a few times now and every meal has been fantastic!! Service is always fast and friendly and I look forward to my next visit!!
H. A.
Just up from Yorkshire for a long weekend and found an absolute gem. I am coeliac and have just had the first proper pizza in nearly 8 years! Mamma's make there own gluten free pizza dough and all I can describe is that I was in heaven. The pizza (12 inch) was divine. Recommend to any Coeliac
H. F.
Gluten free options yay! The pizza was huge and I shared with the boyfriend. We could barely finish it. Really good base, best American style pizza I've had.
R. H.
I can only speak to the delivery service but the selection of toppings and the crispiness of the base is, to my mind, the best of the Edinburgh pizza restaurants. The spicy sauce with haggis and prosciutto, while a cardiologists nightmare, is divine. Delivery is very fast and polite, the only quibble is the staff having to reenter my phone number pretty much every time I order
T. O. M.
The pizza was good and they had Wi-Fi too. They also had gluten-free pizzas on the menu so there was something for everyone. The food might take a while though especially if you are ordering something other than a pizza but it's well worth the wait 👍
C. S.
I've been fond of Mamma's for many years and even throgh they've passed their peak they remain a favourite.
Once dotted around from Inverleith to Bruntsfield, now the Grassmarket branch is all that remains. However, they've long provided one of the better gluten free pizzas I've come across - crispy, flavoursome, and almost indistinguishable from the 'normal' ones.
The range of toppings is huge and you'll probably find yourself debating whether pickled cactus and marshmallows would go together. Which is a refreshing alternative to most pizzerias' mainstream selection of meat and veg. I'm also a fan of anywhere that gives me the option of coating my food in parmesan and chilli.
Since the Grassmarket was reopened as something that looks rather continental, it's lovely to sit outside here on a summer day and eat nice pizza while watching the tourists. Inside is a little bit cramped, but then there's always the option of takeaway as well. The staff are mostly quite wonderfully eccentric, and likely to get caught up in silly banter, which I always see as an excuse in itself to visit somewhere!
B. H.
So glad we found this gem of a place. Extremely delicious pizza, we loved picking our toppings as there are so many to choose from. Lovely atmosphere and staff are very attentive.
D. T.
We have eaten at Mamma's several times over the years and are never left wanting. We thought it would be a mixed bag during the Festival, but we were seated within minutes and the staff were very helpful and polite - which can often be hard to find in the city on a Saturday night - especially in the Grassmarket.
I was a bit disappointed with the lack of spinach on my pizza, and finding out after asking for more that I was charged for it. Also, they automatically add an optional 10% gratuity to the bill - however, if I ran a restaurant in the Grassmarket, I'd probably do the same.
Mamma's is the only pizza place I've seen that does a gluten free crust - which I'll definitely have to try next time.
Now to eat my left over pizza...
J. W.
Informal staff that are really, really efficient and professional. I know, sounds weird, eh?
Food's top notch, decor is nice and it's toasty warm in winter and cool in summer because of the stone walls.
F. P.
Just an absolutely amazing pizza restaurant. The nachos are so more-ish and with a student discount has become by far my restaurant of choice. Food is cheerful but certainly not cheap tasting, despite the low price. Totally recommend this place!
k.
Was at Mama's almost everyday on our vacation to Edinburgh in 2010. Best gluten free pizza I have had to date. Will be returning this fall (2016) to get back on my pizza-a-day diet!!!
A. F.
Yummy, and very friendly staff. They keep the parmesan cheese in the fridge, so if you want it you have to ask. Their gluten free crust is amazing!
T. B.
We enjoyed jalapeno/mushroom/feta and tomato/goat cheese/artichoke pizzas with a variety of their beers. The crust is crispy and very tasty with the ingredients. Excellent choice for a pizza joint!
K.
Always good service with a smile, helpful staff nice food. Good for families as has booths, kids always enjoy the pizza and reasonably priced for the area.
S. R.
Best Gluten-free pizza in Edinburgh. Excellent service, does take out too. Light fluffy base with crunchy crust - far superior to alternatives from Pizza Express, Pizza Hut, Domino's or La Favorita.
#coeliacthumbsup
J. P.
Food was lukewarm (didn't have time to complain and ask for a hot version - I'm sure they'd have fixed it if I asked). Taste was average but hardly outstanding. Service was fine.
Not a lot for the money.
P. R.
Great service and delicious pizza!!!
S. S.
Amazing .... pizza lovely and my wife had the most tender steak that cooks it self in front of you. Staff and service friendly.... fully recommend.
Z. O.
Really good and tasty pizzas and friendly stuff , 100% recommend it
C. S.
I've been here a few times. Staff are always friendly and food is served in good time. Good options of pizza toppings... You should find something for you
V. P.
Nice food, small but comfortable
A. A.
It's not really American but founded by a Scotsman. However, the pizzas are delicious and serviced by attentive staff. Great place if you're looking for a good meal.
F. B.
Exquisite service. I haven't ever had an experience as good. Food and Vibes 10/10
C. M.
My Wife worked here 30 years ago, and it still has that popular attraction, and great menu. Location is perfect in the centre of Edinburgh Old Town
K.
Been here twice since lockdown and they've been absolutely amazing at handling social distancing etc and the food is super tasty, with the majority of the menu having gluten-free options!
E. T.
Tasty pizza and a warm welcome! Great little restaurant in the Grassmarket, and good value for money! Only downside is the tables are tiny so you have to shuffle things around.
C. S.
Amazing gluten free pizza's! Good service, location and price! Thank you x
C. H.
Very nice pizza and well priced for location. Portions are massive and ingredients seemed fresh. Only negative is a bit cramped.
F. F.
Friendly and very accommodating staff, but the food wasn't exceptional. We ordered nachos, the dips and cheese were tasteless and seemed to be industrial proceeded foods.
k. d.
Absolutely lovely fresh pizza, even did a gluten free one for the wife. Really friendly staff.
J. “. T.
Good pizza, and the wings were excellent. I wouldn't recommend the spicy beef it wasn't terrible just probably wouldn't recommend on a pizza. The pepperoni was delicious, prices were reasonable for the amount of pizza you get.
D. C.
Pizza delicious, staff friendly and overall just a great experience. Aaaaand, they offer delicious gluten free pizza!
K. K.
Nice stuff and really tasty pizza. The one with marmelade and goat cheese is so delicious, although it sounds maybe a bit strange. It is really awesome. Give it a try!
K. G.
Delicious pizza, would highly recommend. Vegetarian, vegan, GF & DF options easily available.
B. O.
I had a very nice pizza here with rocoto peppers goats cheese and bacon! The service is very friendly with knowledgeable waiters!
A. W.
Great variety of pizzas and other meals. Wonderful fo coeliacs. The menu marks anything that is not gluten free. One of my favourite places to eat.
D. L.
Show service and very average pizza. Had much better, but to be fair, I've had much worse, too. The garlic mayo was Really garlicky and the BBQ sauce was very vinegary.
M. C.
Staff were lovely. Pizza was fine. A medium sized pizza is a bit more than one person can comfortably eat.
H. M.
The food here is amazing, and the staff are really helpful when discussing dietary requirements.
Amazing gluten free pizza!
D. A.
Very good!!! Great staff food was good and inexpensive £24 with trip. Pasta with cheese sauce and garlic bread ( plenty of leftover) husband had PANZEROTTI.
L. S.
Favourite eating place in Edinburgh . Small & friendly. Try the steak on a slate, you can cook it to suit your taste. Delicious.
M. Z.
generous portions and lovely waiting staff!!

S. H.

I loved the Soprano Pizza four of my favourite this to eat in one dish, and I am not a huge pizza fan. My husband loved the Cash too.
A. H.
Very helpful staff, we had takeaway pizza and nachos. Really good portion sizes and well packed.
D. M.
No wait to get a table at lunch. Service was quick and friendly. We got a Caesar salad and a cheese pizza. Both were good.

P. J.
Nice pizzas and the staff was extremely accommodating to our special requests tonight, which they didn't have to. Thank you.
A. C.
Great service from staff, pizzas are lovely but just a little on the pricey side if you want a few topping but I suppose you pay for the great location.
M. S. E.
The pizza is so good and the staff very nice! They serve food until 11pm which is very convenient in this city. Excellent!
