Reviews of baccalà
S. &. E.
Baccala is one the best restaurants we've been to in a very long time in London. We took our sister to celebrate her 30th birthday and was so surprised by the quality, freshness and taste of the food and level of service we received. We were wow'ed by every dish and would definitely be coming back again. Thank you Fabio and your amazing team for making my sisters night a wonderful birthday. Bonus points you can bring your dog too!

Got an amazing Italian food experience.
Would love to mention Grilled octopus as a starter which is absolutely delicious.
Very friendly staff, especially one gentleman who explained whole menu and took care of us for whole evening.
Will come back to try more wines and tiramisu :)
Best,
Anastasia.

Visited again after three months away and the food again superb. Highly recommended.
Had the most beautiful, fresh and delicious oysters aperitif with the sweet delicate flavours of Carlingford and the Cornish oysters with Proseco . Great combination and a good price. Had the classic octopus to follow mixed with peppers and salad. A must go place for seafood at reasonable price. The wine was great too served with in depth knowledge by FABIO. Highly recommended. We had the cod and the auberugne salad for starters as well as the bread with the olive oil from Campania. Mains were the clams with sweet onion and the prawns. I personally absolutely loved the clams! Good value for money and excellent service! Thank you!
H.
The food was amazing!!! The smoked salmon was very sweet and all the mains were wonderful. The flavours were beautiful and the seafood extremely fresh. The wine selection included many lovely Italian wines. Dog friendly too! Highly recommended!!!!

Food was absolutely great, fresh ingredients and super authentic dishes. Loved the grilled octopus with lardo and spaghetti with clams! Fried baccalá was also pretty good. Totally recommend!
B. J.
Excellent Italian seafood restaurant with a tasty selection of starters, pasta dishes and main courses, together with a good wine list and a choice of olive oils! My only complaint is having a single unisex toilet cubicle for the entire 2-floor restaurant. Otherwise it would have been 5-stars!
A. N. C.
We had a couple date dinner here. Firstly, the food was amazing. Started with olive oil with complex flavors, we tested oysters and octopus as a starter and both were perfectly fine. The pasta varieties were fabulous. Go for one of them :) Tiramisu was big enough for 4 pax. Also the wine selection is rich from different regions of Italy.
Although it was a really busy night yesterday, the staff was so friendly and they did take well care of us.

We were recommended this restaurant/wine bar by our hotel and we’re not disappointed. We wanted to taste a few Italian wines and were met with a huge amount of knowledge and passion. The wine was superb and the accompanying food was delicious. We would highly recommend the Octopus and salt cod with polenta! Please don’t walk past this restaurant it is highly worth a visit!
C. V.
Sensational. The staff were polite and attentive, food was presented beautifully and tasted as such, portion sizes seem small, but the food is clearly meant to eaten slowly and savoured over a conversation rather than inhaled. The atmosphere was modern, classy and conducive to having a pleasant chat with your friends and enjoying each others company. Would happily eat here again.

Stumbled on this Italian seafood restaurant while exploring Bermondsey Street, very attentive staff that provided great recommendations, would definitely come back to try more dishes! We had the roasted octopus, fusili with sea urchin, roasted cuttlefish, a couple oysters, and limoncello spritz. Every dish was a hit with nice balanced flavours!
A. E.
Great food, friendly & professional staff & was great atmosphere to meet friends & celebrate birthday ! the chef himself helped cutting the cake for us.

So delicious instantly brings me back to Rome. I highly recommend this place. There are two floors of seating and limited tables in front of the restaurant.
S. J.
Delicious menu, the fish is beyond fresh and tasty and the wine we tried was absolutely exquisite. I booked this place randomly at the very last minute, and got a table straight away on a Saturday evening for 3 people. Service was a bit messy - as the restaurant started to fill up, the waiters quickly had their hands full which caused some mistakes to our order (we ordered starters, antipasti and mains but the mains never turned up...). In the end, we were full by the time we finished our antipasti so it was a blessing a disguise (I would recommend that if you get some pasta, there's no need to order a main on top of that unless you're feeling REALLY hungry as the portions are pretty well served). We then ordered dessert but again, the waitress has forgotten about our order... The manager and waitress apologised when they realised, and they were really nice so it didn't spoil the experience but I would have appreciated a gesture on the bill. I will be back though!

I really love this place in Bermondsey. I think it’s much better in quality compared to other Italian places in the area. It does have a higher price point but I think it is justified given on their quality of ingredients and portion size.
This is one of the very few places I’ve repeated in London and I am definitely planning on going back again soon. I absolutely love their oysters here too and always get them when I’m in! Their sea urchin pasta is super interesting to try plus their tiramisu is amazing!
M. L. D.
We had a lovely evening.
Fabio, the owner, was super attentive and made us feel very welcome.
Our food was excellent.
Overall, I would highly recommend.
B. B.
Beautiful specialty fish and seafood restaurant on Bermondsey Street. We went for the Saturday lunch set menu and it was fantastic. We started with deliciously fresh oysters sourced from Ireland and Cornwall, before moving on to the salmon tartare and the salt baked cod. The food was all expertly prepared and wonderfully tasty, while the service throughout the meal was attentive and personable. Perhaps our new favourite restaurant on Bermondsey St. We will definitely be coming back soon!

Amazing Italian sea-food restaurant in the center of London, Bermondsey.
Extra-fresh food, great hospitality, high level of service always ready to suggest wines for the best pairing.
The Italian wine list, the Italian-liqueurs list and the Italian-oils list are very refined, including small producers focused in high quality. It's present a selection of beers from a local Brewery too.
All the dishes are very balanced in sapidity, sweetness, acidity, fatness and kokumi. Very well laid out, any dish it's an explosion of taste!
An experience for the palate that cannot be missed!
B. T.
Phenomenal so yummy! The best oysters I have ever eaten and the freshest seafood!
The dessert was SO good Panna cotta . Every detail is so thoughtful and delicious
S. W.
I booked late last Thursday and despite being super busy they were able to fit me and friends. The food was different to what I had expected from an Italian restaurant but if you love seafood then it's worth checking out. We weren't sure which wine to go with but Fabio made a great selection and overall with the atmosphere, food and drink it's a place I would definitely go to again.
S. F.
WOW!!! What a special place this is. Only 4 weeks old but it felt like a well run restaurant. Very friendly service & beautifully decorated. The food was sublime, cooked to perfection & really interesting menu. Italian wines & an olive oil list to choose from for your bread!!
A must & no doubt will become a regular place for us to enjoy!
S. M.
Fabio & team looked after me and made sure I was aware of their USP - I checked the place out online, hence my visit ;p The oysters & seabass carpaccio were superb as were the wine recommendations & grappa! I've already booked to go back!
I wish I hadn't got the calamaretti in black rice flour because for 1 person, it's too heavy BUT sooooo moreish with the caper mayo!!
S. L.
What a treat, the food was absolutely delicious, fresh, tasty, amazing. Fantastic wine selection. Very stylish interior with nice laidback music. Lovely staff. 10/10
A. B.
Absolutely authentic Italian cuisine with family friendly service. A local business created by two families coming together serving imppecable dishes. Fabio was amazing and kindly indulged our requests and conversation. Such a great place gor friends or family to meet. BTW great wine list
N. D.
Roasted octopus and Tiramisu were our favourites. The menu is quite short, we were hoping for a greater variety of traditional Italian cuisine and pasta to choose from.
S. T.
Came here for a evening meal and had an excellent experience. The food was wonderful. Superb flavours in all of the dishes and really well presented. Superb service throughout the evening. A real hidden gem
H. M.
Food fine. Prices too high. Would advise them to remove the horrendous garden table and chairs in the corner by the bottom of the stairs. It’s uncomfortable to sit at.
A. L.
Great spot for date nights. Ask to try the special olive oils, whatever the special of the day is and the tiramisu is a must. On the pricier side for the neighborhood, £50/pp before drinks for dinner but will worth it.
m. b.
great find on a spur of the moment. Sea urchin spaghetti was first, Salt cod with fennel and barlotti beans very good indeed. Great wines by the glass and the bread with olives wirth the price. Excellent service and a lovely atmosphere. Great for pescatarians.
J. M.
Fantastic food, definitely order the octopus and great wine selection. The only issue is that I discovered I may be allergic to shellfish after eating there which is a shame as I would definitely of liked to have gone back… would recommend highly!
D. F.
Fabulous fresh food with so much flavour and care. A really delicious menu, wonderful bread and wine. Very attentive and helpful staff. And a lovely (large!) tiramisu. Highly recommended! We took advantage of the outside seating for our lunch.
D. R.
Delicious food and wine, great atmosphere. We were very well taken care of by the staff. Will go back again to try the rest of the menu!
V. T.
Very, very small mains unless you order the two pastas. The vegan option is basically plain pasta and the vegetarian is 5 pieces of asparagus for 16£. While the staff are nice and atmosphere is good. It is very average for the price. Wouldn't be rushing back.
C. T.
Had a lovely lunch here with my wife. Food was superbe - had the roasted octopus and mackerel starters and the deep fried squid and stone bass mains. To finish off, the tiramisu was one of the best I have had in London. Additionally, there is a wide selection of Italian wines to explore. Will be back.
D. B.
Octopus starter was nice, but was expensive at about £22. For the main dishes, the portions of pasta was very very small.
R. R.
We had a wonderful evening! The wine was special, every dish was well-made and delicious, and we agreed that so far baccalà served us the best octopus in London. Thanks!
R. Y.
This stone bass with baked fennel is by far the best I’ve ever had! It was great being able to taste different olive oils which you can then do pairing with suggested plates. A very unique experience and the staff definitely make you feel at home.
E. B.
Every bite we had was incredible. Absolutely delicious food with a great selection of wine. It is a unique experience with extremely friendly atmosphere.
E. T.
Great restaurant, bomb seafood and olive oil. The fresh Dorset and Irish oysters were absolutely amazing and went down a treat with the craft IPA the restaurant apparently directly sources from the St. Austell Brewery.
The other highlight of the night was the olive oil and the fresh bread, which is least to say I’ve never had such a good quality olive oil in UK. I think it was a small batch production from Italy and it was a very fresh harvest since I’ve never tasted that notes of grassiness and pleasant bitterness in my life.
The octopus and the cuttlefish were also perfectly cooked and the house made tiramisu paired great with the grappa.
This place may be becoming my favorite spot in the summer and will definitely be visiting again. If you’d like a true Italian food experience, this place is it. 10/10 would recommend
K.
I received a call to confirm my reservation and if I had any special requests that I found welcoming.we had a table down stairs that was great on a very hot day.For the starter we had the sea bass carpaccio which my 12yr.loved and octopus.
The friendly waitress was very knowledgeable of the food what made it easier to order.
Downside is if you are seating on the bench seats by the wall they are too low ,uncomfortable to be sat for long. Otherwise in general the food and service was great
N. S.
Bermondsey Street festival 2020 and had a great 6 chunky delicious oysters with a glass of pinot grigio. Would return for a proper dinner
A. H.
Sensational Italian cuisine served with love and dedication and culinary wisdom. The olive oil menu selection is a delight. The oysters are the best in London. And the place is minimalist, clean and awesome.
B. A.
Great service. Good atmosphere and the food was very tasty!
Really enjoyed the authentic food!

One word is enough - fantastic. Together with my wife we spent yesterday a very lovely evening in Baccala. It has been my fist visit to Baccala. The food was sophisticated, but still simple and not exaggerated in form. I will not describe each of dishes that we ordered separately, because everything was delicious. Maybe tiramisu a bit less. The staff was friendly, open, always on site and helpful, but never intrusive. A nice and charming sommelier chose for us bottle of wine perfectly matching all of our dinner. The atmosphere in the place is very nice and pleasant, prompting to celebrate the meal long.
Awww.., I would have forgotten,
I have tiny hint for Baccala: you must be careful there, because I'm wondering if I shouldn't break in and steal one of your's amazing olive oils😉
S. S.
Not the cheapest place to eat but really good value. I would not be surprised to see this get a recommendation in the mitchallin guide. The food is delicate, there's a bit of fun with getting to choose you own olive oil. The wine selection works well with the sea food dishes. For four of us to share plates and bread as starters, each have a main, two of us a dessert and a bottle of wine for under 50pp. That said some of the main dish portions are a little small me and the wife shared a spaghetti ai ricci di mare e piselli with the main. I really recommend the affogato Al limonchello dessert.

Fabulous fish place to go in London! Amazing flavours, service, fantastic food and wine. The best Italian place I went over the last 4 years! And I will come back regularly! Simply the best…
A. L.
We had a lovely experience, food was delicious and the olive oil we tried was exceptional!
A. F.
Fantastic spot on Bermondsey Street.
The service is refined yet informal. Knowledgeable team with great food. I drop in for oysters as a little treat quite regularly and love the vibe. Support this business.
S. X.
Attentative staff and good food. Well worth a visit. Baccala dish itself was very tasty.
A. M.
Good quality local Italian restaurant. Very attentive staff who care about your experience. Highly recommended.
N. C.
The welcome was genuine & the food authentic & delicious. A real discovery. I have already re booked.
M. A.
Just go there, it's absolutely delicious.
I particularly loved the olive oil pairing idea.
A. O.
The food was Ok but some of the prawns in the pasta had heads which I had to separate myself. The most annoying moment was the wait for the main course - over 2h. As there was automatic service charge (12.5%), I believe I was let down. Overall the atmosphere was nice and rosé Veneto went well with the starters
L. D.
Me and family shared a fabulous celebratory Saturday night at this wonderful restaurant. Every dish was delicious, the quality was outstanding. Fabio was the perfect host. All of the dishes were absolutley delicious... flawless the whole experience. Baccala is the best addition to Bermondsey St in a long while. We will be back at the drop of a hat. Thanks team Baccala. Liz
T. F.
Can't fault the food and the wine. Both delicious and I'm not normally fussed about wine. Falls down on value for money... Small portions and £40 a bottle
A. L.
Very friendly and warm staff. The reataurant is recently opened so if you go there around 3, 4 pm on a Saturday it is rather empty. It's so exquisite in its simplicity as decor that it definitely stands out from the rest of the Italian restaurants around the city. The menu is very selective and rather limited, but here less means definitely more. The quality of the products used gives the food an authentic and delicious taste. Incredible wine selection. I would go there just for the wine. Unfortunately the tiramisú had to be returned on this occasion. As much as like the restaurant, the food, the service, the location, this type of "mistake" will definitely prevent me from returning here any time soon.
J. D.
Great atmosphere and amazing food. Fried black calamari especially recommended. A must see in London.
P. D.
A truly amazing place. I don’t usually eat Italian in London but this was a delicious surprise. The presentation, the flavours, the wine list. Everything is so classic and yet so different. Well done!
D. P.
Our visit to Baccala was a last minute decision with my partner and her parents and it turned out to be disappointing.
Very friendly despite what seemed to be a busy Tuesday evening but unfortunately that didn't make up for quite a few shortcomings.
An Italian restaurant is usually a fairly safe bet when trying to cater for a range of taste, however here this is not the case. This place specialises in fish and seafood (and some cheese) and this is it. If you're looking forward to Bolognese pasta or a pizza go somewhere else.
For starter, the 4 of us shared a seabass carpaccio, bread and a burrata (mozzarella cheese with cream inside) on a bed of courgettes.
As mains we took a prawn lasagna, mezze maniche (pasta) with courgettes and bottarga (dry fish), an aubergine parmegiana with pieces of crab and a spaghetti vongole.
Pudding: 2 affogatos (2 scoops of ice cream with coffee or liqueur).
Drinks: 3 glasses of wine, 1 orange juice, 1 beer.
Starters were very nice but in quite small quantity. Main courses were average in taste or small quantity or both, a feeling echoed by the desserts. Prosecco flutes only 1/3 full.
Our bill was £127 with Eat Out Help Out discount including a 12% service fee.
E. S.
Great service, high quality ingredients. Freshly cooked, tastes really good. Octopus, olive oil, house wine, stonefish and tiramisu were my selection, very satisfactory, thank you.
S. T. O.
I am a returning customer and I loved every choice I made!!! Yummy food and delicious wine!!
L. B.
Amazing little Italian restaurant. The fish and seafood were outstandingly fresh and delicious. The service was professional and warm. Please give this place a try
C. H.
Delicious food, the sea urchin spaghetti was the only disappointment - have the vongole instead. For people who have an expense account only (very pricey)

Our new favourite restaurant on Bermondsey Street! A truly sublime food experience. -Great service, fresh ingredients, perfectly edited wine list, and an olive oil menu!
J. G.
What an amazing addition to bermondsey street. Fills a void that has been left since the departure of Zucca with a fresh and modern seafood twist. The owners clearly put their heart and soul into creating something special. We enjoyed fresh oysters and mackerel carpaccio to start, a delicious spaghetti with clams to follow and an amazing chianti octopus stew. Will definitely be back soon!
Y. V.
Wonderful place - friendly and efficient service, every single course was exquisite and special, gorgeous ingredients and carefully thought through details. The atmosphere was nice and relaxed too and we were made to feel welcome and appreciated. We will be back!

Awesome evening,
From the way in to the way out, jaw on the floor, with Fabio’s wine pairing to chef Moreno’s dishes, their EVOO pairing is amazing ( who knew olive oil was so different depending on the region it’s from), you have to try the calamari and the sea bass carpaccio, top night great evening can’t wait to go back.

A genuine taste of Venice. Great produce, cooking and wine list. Not cheap but you wouldn't want it to be.

Tried this place out after all the great reviews as I'm staying in the area for a few days. Was in on Friday night and yeah the food was ALRIGHT and Service was ok but it's really nothing that fancy and definitely not worth the price which is high even for this area.

(Translated) Italian Roman cuisine restaurant on Bermondsey Street. As the name suggests at the base of the menu there is cod, present in at least one dish of each course. Very pleasant place, very nice and helpful staff, fantastic cuisine. The pentolaccia with seafood is absolutely recommended, especially the prawns.
