Reviews of Forty Dean Street
H. L.
A little bit pricey. Lobster spaghetti was slightly disappointing. However, other food were beyond average, and the ceaser salad might have been the best one I’ve ever tried.
Great atmosphere and pet friendly

My best friend and I booked prior to a theatre show. The service was impeccable and our food was fantastic. Would definitely eat here again. Felt welcome and comfortable. They needed our table for a later booking but we were happy to move to the bar for dessert and coffee. We were treated in such a lovely way. I would definitely recommend this lovely restaurant. I very rarely go to London but this made our experience very special, the staff were fantastic, the food was amazing and we thank you for making our day more special! Because I’m rubbish at technology this is under my son’s name but hey ho… who cares! As long as you know you were all super lovely and brilliant that’s what matters the most! 😘

A lovely little spot for a birthday dinner afterwork . The food was amazing ! And staff were very friendly.
Would highly recommend this Resturant. !

Lovely dog friendly restaurant in the heart of Soho. Went there for the first time for a bday dinner and we will definitely visit this place again! The food was absolutely delicious, (you HAVE TO try the gnocchi), the staff took super good care of us, LEO you super star!!! They brought us a little bowl of water for CoCo and celebrated with us our friend’s special day. Thank you! X
C. H.
Such a lovely lunch. Super friendly and great food.

Yet another AMAZING meal at 40 Dean last night! I've had most things on the menu in the past, but I went for the linguini and chicken Milanese last night. Delicious. Staff are also the cheeriest in Soho.
R. M.
Sat outside and watched Soho go by, great waiter and really lovely Sea Bass
l. k.
The place is cute with a nice vibe but the food isn’t so great. The ravioli was cold and not tasty, the lobster pasta was fishy. The appetizers and pizza were the best part.
K. J.
Super nice restaurant- food and staff and drinks- and that it was dog friendly made it nigh-on perfect!!! Thanks all especially Lisa and Mr Eyebrows x Buddy says thanks too xx
H. A.
The atmosphere in the restaurant was really nice. The service was fantastic, the waiters were very helpful. The food was delicious. Would highly recommend the lobster spaghetti!!
T. J. R.
Lovely atmosphere, beautiful food, attentive service. Not sure you can ask for more really!

We luckily booked this on the Thursday of the Jubilee celebrations. We had read a number of positive reviews and decided to give it a try. So glad that we did as everywhere was booked and 40 Dean Street had to sadly turn away a number of walk-in customers.
The food was superb, from the Bruschetta starters, the ragu pasta & inferno pizza and the caramel cheese cake.
Will definitely be returning.
Only criticism, hence 1 star being left off, was that the prices were inflated on the menu compated to their website.
L. B.
Food was lovely but I was handed a knife blade facing me and across another person and so the only thing I could grab was the blade. Normal knife etiquette would be to come next to me and set it down or to hand me the handle but never the blade.
C.
Very nice food and staff. Great environment to have a date or see a friend!
P. M. K.
Cosy Italian restaurant located in Soho. Liked the seafood risotto more than the black ink linguini. But both very good. Very tasty squid starter. Didn't like the dessert, ordered pistachio tiramisu. Didn't taste any pistachio, just a regular tiramisu. Love the gin cocktail made with lime, basil and egg white. Very friendly staff. And pet friendly :)
D. N.
Excellent authentic Italian food. The menu had his variety with pizza, pasta, and more substantial dishes all available. The primitivo was absolutely lovely!
B. P.
Great experience this evening at Forty Dean St, excellent quality food, good portion size and cooked beautifully. Service was excellent, only sticking points were it was pretty crowded and quite loud, but other than that, excellent meal. 9/10, would highly recommend
C. G.
Small quaint little restaurant serving good wholesome home cooked Italian meals just like mamma made! Friendly attentive service. Went there using the TimeOut voucher offer and was a little apprehensive but would thoroughly recommend with or without a voucher. Look forward to going back to try the Lobster.
B. N.
Gorgeous food. Lovely environment and staff.
C. H.
Had a lovley time, food was amazing! Absolutely incredible! My partener and I hardly spoke when we were eating it was that good! Little loud here and there but nothing to spoil the evening. And they take dogs, what more could you want!
M. B.
A cosy, little gem in soho. Delicious, reasonably priced food (with good gluten free options) combined with attentive and cheerful staff - you can't go wrong. Would highly recommend the tiger prawns in a brandy sauce starter and superb lobster spaghetti. Meraviglioso!!
b. z.
My daughters took me here for my 60th birthday meal and I thought it would be great to return there with my son for his 40th being “forty Dean street” Fab time, fab food and fab service - will be going back again - just need another birthday - met a couple of “artists” sitting next to us and ended up visiting a couple of galleries including the new Damien Hirst exhibition- who were these people?? 🤔
D. P. A.
Absolutely delicious 😋. Couldn't fault service or food! Can't wait to return!
A. E.
Thank you for the lovely meal that was served to us and accommodating our dinner for the birthday party. It as delicious 🥰
G. C.
Had a great time at this lovely Italian restaurant. Good food and very pleasant and efficient staff. Highly recommended.
J. E.
Fabulous food with a fabulous quick service. Recommend anyone who's here for a theatre shoe to stop here for a meal.
L. B.
Lovely place to sit and watch the world go by, we didnt eat as we had booked elsewhere for dinner. I will say the service, atmosphere and wine was brilliant.
We will be going back to sample the food.
S. B.
Went here for a belated birthday lunch and it was great. Food was delicious especially the lobster ravioli and the waitress who served us was attentive.
It was understandably busy as it was the 1st weekend since restrictions were lifted. The only fault was our cocktails took a while to arrive but apart from that a lovely experience.
H. S.
2nd time to this lovely, authentic restaurant. Full of atmosphere and everyone enjoying themselves.
A. F. H. A.
Great tiramisu and service
S. C.
Kept waiting outside for our table and service was a little slow at times. However, beautiful food once it arrives
L. F. &. T. &. W.
Love the food especially Spaghetti with fresh lobster. Love the dog-friendly environment, love the service. Highly recommend 👍🏻
E. B.
Had a shared birthday celebration meal the staff went out of there way to spoil us and gave us a bottle of Prosecco in delicate champagne 🍾glasses. The four of us ordered different meals and all delicious. We are planning to go again next month.
H. R.
Amazing food! A bit expensive but definitely value for money. Service was very nice and professional ☺️
We were seated outside next to a door/gate and we had many people pass between our table to get to the door. It wasn't nice, and I would recommend maybe moving that table away from the door. Otherwise the restaurant was great!
R.
their burrata is amazing, pizzas are decent sized and pasta are the textures that we wanted. a very authentic and classy Italian getaway :)
A.
When you see sweet chilli sauce and squid on the starters menu you know what to expect from this “Italian” restaurant.
Minimal flavour and barely any seasoning. Over priced for the quality.
Staff are rather strange, asked 3 times for oil, took 15m in total. Finished out plates and table was cleared 10m later.
a. w.
Kids fancied pizza for lunch and they were happy. I was delighted with my parmigiana, but the lobster ravioli was absolutely fantastic- so much lobster, so much flavour- really couldn't have been better, thank you.
B.
Fantastic fresh, flavoursome and great quality food. Really nice service with a great atmosphere
S. X.
GOOD FOOD. Acceptable portions. Nice atmosphere. Worthy of 4 stars.
N. J.
Yummy food and honestly the loveliest staff! The waitress looking after us even sorted out a free tiramasu with a candle for my friends birthday! Such a lovely evening here, will definitely be coming back.
R. G.
Lovely small personalised family restaurant in the centre of London offering reasonably prices Italian home cooking. Couldn't recommend it more
M.
The risotto was to die for. The food, service and atmosphere in general was superb. As a disabled customer i was unable to access the restaurants downstairs loo, however the staff kindly arranged with Burger & Lobster 2 doors away, for me to use their disabled loos which took so much stress away. Thank you guys for going over and above to make me feel comfortable!!xxx
D. R.
I left London after staying for three years and I’m sitting here reminiscing about this restaurant 10 months later. That lobster ravioli is worth this review because my God that was some damn good food. 1000/10 recommend
J. T.
We had an amazing Christmas dinner here. Food and service were really good and I can't wait to come back and try the main menu.
B. R.
Great modern take on Italian food. Fresh ingredients and tasty combinations
S. S.
very nice restaurant with delicious food and drinks. great service too
R. K.
Excellent service , beautifully presented food with equally excellent value for money.
If you happen to order any start please make sure you order the King prawns it's Divine .
I love Italian food and this place is a must !
T. K.
Loved the place. Great atmosphere. Amazing music. Food was delicious and service, excelente. Not too loud, cosy, friendly place.
T. H.
Very happy place superb food, pleasant staff. Thou service charge was a surprise. Considering it was like paying for a other meal. Very costly.
T. P.
I just love this place. It's one of the few dog friendly restaurants where the quality of food is excellent, the service has always been great, they're lovely with my dog and always have treats at hand for him, met the owner once when he came over to fuss dog and I thought he seemed great. Bit disappointed the menu has been reduced and hope this is short term, as some of my favourites have gone, but won't stop me from coming back.
N. T.
Very friendly, helpful staff with efficient, quick service. There's a small number of outside seats, but we were allowed to sit inside with our small dog. Booking is necessary. The food is good, we had a garlic bread between us as a starter & it was enough. Main courses were tasty & well-seasoned. The meal was expensive but probably par for the course for the locality.
J. I.
Nice ambience and lovely tasting food. Very good customer service 👏🏾 Came for a birthday celebration and the cake and singing was lovely and much appreciated!
W. S.
Good selection of Italian food. Quality is excellent. Service is pleasant and efficient. Prices are reasonable. Definitely worth trying once and coming back again. Certainly a proper restaurant with atmosphere and not just a place to eat.
m. s.
Lovely friendly Italian restaurant, owner and staff warm and friendly and welcoming, as well as lovely food, we have eaten here twice now on our 2 night stay in London well recommended.
L. H. (. A.
Great restaurant. Staff are friendly and great value. Food is really good!!
G. R.
The vote says all. I’ll visit again. Serve and food is very well.
C. M.
Amazing food and lovely service. Was a bit of a wait outside for our booked table but it's completely understandable because of covid and getting used to being so busy again
L. T.
Friendly and lovely food - will be back soon
N. R.
The BEST place in Soho for a relaxing drink and amazing food. Price, service, everything is great. Thanks so much for a brilliant lunch.
R. L.
We visited Forty Dean Street one Saturday lunchtime for a leisurely long lunch and it was great. The staff were super attentive, kind and engaged - we ordered some desserts to share for the table at the end and they very kindly cut them all in half and presented on a platter for us which was reallt thoughtful. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced for such great flavours and high quality. I would 100% go back again / recommend!
S. C.
Fantastic food, good service, good venue/atmosphere. Mushroom Gnocchi, Lobster Ravioli, Aubergine Parmigiana and Flower Courgette were highlights. Price was fair - cheap for mains considering quality of food.
S.
We ordered the pork belly, which turned out to be more than half fat, but they did offer to replace it. Unfortunately it seems that’s just a characteristic of the pork they use. Do not get it. The lobster ravioli was good, as was the sea bass and the linguini - these are definitely recommended. Courgette fries were also good. The cokes were flat, but again when we complained they were replaced with far better. We’d definitely consider coming back, because firstly their customer service is really good and secondly they welcome dogs.
P. H.
Gorgeous meal. Slow roast belly of pork, apricot puree, spinach and potatoes

One of my favourite Italian restaurants in London. Bruchetta and the lobster spaghetti are mind blowingly good.
Highly recommend.
C. F.
Generous mains
V. N.
Friendly stuff, we enjoyed our time in this place. We had to wait quite long for our dinner, but my pizza worth this much waiting time. However the pastas ordered by my colleagues (two different ones) appeared to be way spicy. Mention in advance that you would like your dish to be not very spicy. Restrooms are clean.

Not for kids, staff nice but as there was no high chair available it made for an uncomfortable meal. Also due to their lack of ever having kids in they would only provide a full pasta. No room for movement with meal, price or general manor! Due to the size of the restaurant having a pram (all be it slim) was also a problem. We only had the table for a certain length of time so although they took a long time to ask what we actually wanted for our mains and dessert they promptly ushered us out. On attempting to leave the restaurant I came unstuck with the pram, luckily the patrons where nice enough to move although the staff did nothing to help. Never take kids here. The food itself was lovely, as was the atmosphere...
N. C.
Lovely atmosphere, delicious food and great service. Reasonably priced for right in the heart of Soho (3 course meal plus cocktails £50). Lovely night out!
E. S.
Pretty good all round
The portions were on the small side
T. S.
Lovely little place, with good value priced meals for central London. However, meal was ruined by being Completely rushed by the manager and waiter and almost ushered out the door.
We arrived at 1815 and were told we could eat if within 90 mins as tables booked from 745.
We purposely chose from the set menu thinking it would be quicker, then waited 30mins for starter and another wait for main. Then when served the desert (albeit lovely) we were told he would bring cheque while we were eating to save time. Then before we had finished desert he was asking us to pay and stood over us while we finished the last of our wine, which we had to down the last bit of, desperate for us to get up and leave. Came across as horribly rude, and handled totally wrong. This was after an hour and 10 mins since we arrived.
Shame, as a nice meal, with delicious food, just ruined by rude staff at the end.
D.
Overall fine, but better places to eat in the area. Starters tasty (deep fried calamari particularly good), mains okay desserts poor (thick dry pastry on lemon tart and banoffee pie and the pistachio tiramisu did not work). Service slow (took around 40mins for starters to arrive) and staff not very warm.
S. G.
Such a lovely place to go to, and would definitely recommend it.
I've only been there twice and on both occasions the food/service and atmosphere have been great. The owner and staff are very professional and welcoming. Grazie and we will definitely be back soon :)
A. R.
Such a lovely place in the middle of Soho.
The owner is a lovely man and the waiter is very nice and polite.
Food was amazing and not expensive at all.
Coffee is the cherry on top!
Absolutely loved it, I will definitely come back again!
Thank you guys.
A. T.
As always, warmly greeted and offered the wine list while I wait for friends. Food is always delicious and a great place for a weekly meal of catch up with friends. You can rely on the service and friendly standard. Always my pleasure. Thanks guys!
J. P.
Beautiful food and lovely service
A. C.
A great Italian place which is small dog friendly. Pasta dishes are fantastic if slightly on the more expensive end. Service is usually good but sometimes you are left waiting for a long time for things.
N. M.
Good pizza, very authentic. However there were many items not on offer from the menu, beer choices differed and they had run out of some wine options. They had no seafood at all ruling half the menu out. This was a shame as what they had was nice
P. M.
Quaint, cosy Italian restaurant offering a good menu selection of starters, pasta & risotto dishes, mains & desserts. There is a reasonable wine list including a decent selection of wines by the glass and I noticed a cocktails list too. This feels and tastes like a family-run restaurant. My mussels starter was ok, nothing special. But the lemon roasted sea bass main was impressively hearty & flavoursome - nothing delicate here, just a joyous plate of soul enriching plump shellfish, perfectly cooked sea bass and a generous underlay of earthy wilted spinach. Get some bread to mop up the juices - yum. Service was good and overall good value for money.
S. C.
I have been a regular patron at 40 Dean Street for almost a decade. Whenever visitors ask for a recommendation, this is the place I recommend. The wine list is sound, the staff friendly and affable, the room warm and friendly and the food always good and mostly excellent.
In the hundreds of visits I have made over the years, I have never had an experience like those the most critical reviewers here claim to have had. The worst experience I have had was a long wait when the restaurant was furiously busy; the second worse just involved a dish being returned to the kitchen to be immediately and graciously replaced.
This is a charming, flamboyant, happy restaurant led by the amiable Nima. Service is always genuine and cheery. Sometimes staff have language issues but they are always, in my experience kind, willing, and gracious.
The menu is very affordable, especially by London/Soho standards. The special set price menus offer incredible value for money but the a la carte menu also offers great value.
The pizzas here are delicious and crisp, very Italian. All of the pasta dishes shine and the combination of flavours can be subtle and satisfying in that entirely Tuscan way. The gnocchi and seafood pasta dishes are especially good, with every element perfectly balanced for taste and flavour.
But it is with the Risotto that the restaurant has always shined. It is easily the best risotto I have ever eaten in London. And as it is a favourite dish I have tried it elsewhere and often. But I always come back to this restaurant and it’s risotto. You won’t find a Chicken and Asparagus risotto on menus in Osterias in Italy, but 40 Dean Street fully makes the case for why you should. No one who has ever eaten it on my suggestion has ever even expressed mild disappointment. All have adored it.
But that is not all. The meat dishes are terrific too, the Osso Bucco a particular triumph.
40 Dean Street is a shining example of something Soho is losing in spades: a comfortable, cheery, cheap eatery that can be your home away from home. It’s not a chain, it doesn’t pretend to be a Michelin star restaurant - it’s friendly, inexpensive and excellent value for money. And it serves yummy food and delicious wine.
If I am happy to take all of my friends and acquaintances there, you should be too. They will be welcomed, wined and dined in convivial conditions.
J. A.
Lovely little restaurant in soho. Staff seemed slightly rushed at times, but didn't detract from the overall experience. Food is very reasonably priced and delicious. I had the rib eye steak, cooked medium, and was cooked to perfection. I would definitely recommend for a meal.
S. K.
Had the lobster ravioli and it was absolutely delicious! Didn't feel they did a great job with distancing the tables, hence dropping one star
A. Q.
Excellent food, really good service and good atmosphere
B. R.
I have frequented this restaurant for a few years now, but I have had a longish gap, lunching today for the first time in a wee while.
And I must say, I was not disappointed. The food really is exceptional, particularly if you like Italian food. I sampled their special menu, extremely good value at £12.90. I chose a smoked mozzarella and proscutio starter with a perfectly cooked lasagne, all washed down with a fabulous Primitivo.
As to staff: I noted the review that describes the staff/waiters as "brusque"?? I am surprised. I found Massimo and his brother Alessio to be the opposite of "brusque". Exceptionally pleasant and friendly, I found them to be, with Massimo taking his time to recommend certain dishes and the excellent Primitivo. It was also great to see that Edward was still here since my last visit. Will I come again? You bloody bet I will!
C. B.
Food was expensive, but lovely! That's london for you though! My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening here
S. W.
A nice old school atmosphere but over priced and average food. Prawn starter tasted nice enough but just on the wrong side of rubbery, and the pasta that accompanied the chicken milanese was overdone. It wasn’t terrible by any means, but I won’t be coming back.
S. M.
Excellent food. Great for dogs!
H. F.
Fresh produce. Great food
S. T.
Tried to find a restaurant in the neighbourhood when we found this cosy place. We were surprised with the best pizza we ever had! Super friendly staff that took my friend''s nut allergy very serioysly. Really recommend for anyone who wants to have a superb dinner at a nice location!
T. d.
Booked through open table website for post show meal with friends for 10.15, to find out that the restaurant actually closes at 10.30, they did honour our booking but was very rushed. Food was nice. Staff were nice. Fault was with booking website but something to be aware of if you are planning a later meal.
E. M.
Exceptionally average in every way. I would not go back. The food in particular was underwhelming and inauthentic.
D. H.
Very alright food. The staff were so friendly which compensated for the slightly unimpressive food. The prices are good and it's a great atmosphere.
E. K.
Great food in cosy atmosphere. We all had different dishes in a group of 7 and all of us was happy with the choice. Highly recommended to book on a weekend. The staff was really nice too.
D. F.
You want a good night? Try eating here. Fantastic food. Fabulous waiters. Great drinks. All reasonably priced. Birthday tiramisu and limoncello to boot! Couldn’t recommend it more highly. P.S. have the sea bass 👌
C. R.
Lovely atmosphere and decor, excellent choice of background music. The food was tasty hearty Italian classics and the set menu was a decent value deal.
G. G.
Great Italian restaurant in Soho (dog friendly).
Food amazing, staff welcoming and very professional!
We will be back.
F. E.
Food was reasonably nice, though otherwise unremarkable. Wouldn't really pay the prices they were charging. Some of the waiters were a bit brusque, but the decor's alright
L. C.
I went there with my sisters after being misled to a "korean restaurant" called Gama, which turned out to be a Vietnamese place with a totally different name next door. It was empty, so we got... well, discouraged.
We entered this place and we simply LOVED the food.
I took a menu, my two sisters had pasta. My menu only costed 13£! It was delicious and cheap. My sister had a Lobster spaghetti which was heavenly (a little more expensive, but it's lobsters!) and my other sister had gnocchi.
The tiramisu was good, too. Light in texture and delicious. <3
It was worth being misled!
E. W.
The food is absolutely fantastic, pork belly with addition of bresaola, rockets, parmesan and truffle oil salad..... mouth watering. Currently my no 1 lunch location. Faultless food.
C. L.
Actually just went here yesterday, about 5minutes walk from Picadilly station. Fairly helpful as the restuarant name is actually the address.
We arrived on time, and waited a total of 2minutes before we had a table cleared and seated.
Ordered a fried seafood platter, seabass, spinach with chunky chips. Delicious!!
M. F.
Decent basic Italian if you ask me, with all the bread and oil and bits and bobs you want. Bit stretched (lunch can take 1.5 hrs) but good value. The spaghetti meatballs is a big enough portion for two, easily.
S. P.
Food is excellent!!! Good selection of food and drinks
S. S.
Pasta was delicious (if a little on the pricy side) but service was quite slow and not particularly affable
N.
Casual Italian restaurant in Dean St. The lobster ravioli and the bruschetta were quite ok. The espresso martini was a bit sweet for my liking.
U. I.
Great food. Speedy bar service. Brilliant soundtrack. Lovely staff. A real neighbourhood restaurant in the heart of Soho.
J. E.
Visited Forty Dean street and ate from their set menu with a large group of friends. Was extremely pleased with the food and service, and I'm not usually the biggest fan of Italian.
Definitely recommended.

A warming, dog friendly amazing restaurant with great quality food ! Reallly recommend it, owner and staff very friendly. To visit with your dog !
C. C.
Great food at good prices.
F. B.
Very reasonably priced pre-theatre menu £13.90 for 2 courses. Candles and intimate but bad acoustics so when busy it gets hard to hear. Popular so book in advance.
J. W.
Great food, lovely staff and dog friendly
K.
Good food but the wait times were a bit long.
M. G.
One of my favourite places to visit in soho.
The food is always tasty and incredibly reasonably priced.
Friendly staff who remember your face. A real soho gem.
Always a good evening to be had in this little restaurant.

Fantastic service, out of this world food. We booked at random and were thoroughly glad we chose here. Will definately be back!!

I've eaten really well on both visits to Zilli Green, both times from the Italian side of the menu. First time I had a truffle lasagne, and the second time a porcini tagliatelli. Both very good!

We had a wonderful dinner at 40 Dean Street! The location is perfect and the restaurant itself is very cozy. There’s a couple of tables outside as well. A big plus is that it is pet friendly and they even bring water and snacks for the furry friends!
The service was excellent and everyone was very polite and friendly.
The food was amazing! We got pizza and pasta and both were very well balanced! The tiramisu was fresh and I would definitely recommend and the profiteroles were decadent.
We will most certainly be coming back!

(Translated) We found him by accident looking for other Italians in the area and it has been a success.
The menu they have apart from very economical for London has been of unbeatable quality and authentic Italian flavor. Choose the pasta you choose you can not go wrong. And desserts at the same height.
It also has a romantic atmosphere and pleasant music that accompanies.
Totally recommended.
