Had the special linguine pasta and it was very very good. The pizza was delicious too. All dishes were really good value for the high quality food, I’d definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who likes Italian food.

What a great find. The food was lovely. Not a big place so not loads of space. My one criticism...we had no sooner finished our lovely starters they served our main. Would have liked 10 mins between the courses. That apart food was great.

THE taste of Sardinia! To say a restaurant can capture your taste buds is something we all expect. But to say that it also captures your heart is another matter. From the moment we stepped into Masclazone we were welcomed and seated with friendly faces. By the end, we felt at home in Italy. The food is, for lack of a better word, authentic - at the highest level of quality. Please visit Ian and everyone at Masclazone, you won't regret it!

Quality of the food is perfect. All their pizzas are amazing - lovely thin based with a nice crust and perfect amount of cheese! Very good value too and deserts are delicious and change regularly which is nice to see (had the honey and cinnamon sponge which was spot on). Will be coming back again soon.

Really good food and wine. We had a special meal here this lunchtime. Great seafood dishes and starters were good also. Spoilt for choice and I still wonder what the lamb cutlets special would have been like. This is our third visit recently. This time we had dessert and they were delicious (tiramisu and chocolate cake). I should have photographed the food but I don’t like spoiling the ambience of special meals.

One of the best places to eat in Newcastle and has been top of my list for years for the simple reason that the food is absolutely incredible. Everything I've ever tried from the sardinian inspired menu has consistently knocked my socks off and it's reasonably priced too. What a great find this place is. Little bit off the beat and track unless you live in the Sandyford area and not that easy to get to by public transport. But, so what! Feelgood factor about the place as soon as you walk in. Food was excellent, the wine was first class and not too expensive. Service was very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Will certainly come back and would have no hesitation in recommending this place to anyone who likes Italian food in a completely informal atmosphere.

Lovely find - known about this place for years but decided to try it out a couple of weeks ago. Although we’ve only been here twice; on both occasions the welcome was very warm, service very attentive and food both times extremely tasty and authentic. Excellent little Italian restaurant with an extensive menu of really well prepared and tasty dishes. The vegetarian and fish dishes we ordered were really tasty and generously portioned. Prices also reasonable. Only gripe is not much parking around as it is in the middle of a residential area.

Been a few times. We felt a bit hurried the last time which was a Saturday night, as they asked us to leave to get their second sitting in at 8.45pm, but still giving 4 stars as food was faultless, as always. Also the beer and wine selection is fab too.

I've fancied trying Mascalzone for a while, based on the great reviews. The food we had was overall very nice and the portions were huge. The olives, bread and cheese starter was certainly enough for two and the pasta with pancetta was an enormous serving. I was slightly disappointed with my cannelloni which was a little dry and stodgy. On the night we visited, which was a random rainy Tuesday night, it was packed so booking would be essential. We found that the service was a little slow at times - I saw another diner trying to catch a server's attention for quite a while to pay, and we had to approach the counter to ask for additional drinks. However, food was great value and I would go back, as long as I can park without the risk of a parking ticket as all the nearby streets are permit parking only.

Really lovely, intimate place. Sicilian-Scottish food, alongside standard Italian pizza/pasta. Only about four tables, booking in advance would seem to be a good idea, full on a Tuesday night. Has a specials list, but I could go several more times before I'd run out of investing options on the main menu.

Tried it from a recommendation and my partner wanted to give it a go. It's small and interesting with the tip to Italy in the decor and it's really nice. Their lasagne is without any doubt the best we have ever had, I love the meatballs and the bruschetta starters, recently I had the featherblade of beef off their "specials" menu and my sister had the pork shoulder from the "specials" last week. We live 20 miles from the restaurant but frequently visit Newcastle for shopping, this restaurant is a 5 minute drive out of the city centre but it's well worth the travel.

The parking is a little challenging as the entire area is permit parking, but I think you can park around there during lunchtime and after about 6pm. Not sure. I've been to Mascalzone a few times now and the food and atmosphere is absolutely amazing. We had family visiting today, one member of which was celiac, and the restaurant was extremely accommodating and made the meal extremely enjoyable. The staff are extremely friendly and the chef is brilliant. 5/5 would recommend to everyone.

Very good pizza, staff were attentive and very on the ball. Room was small and it was not possible to have private conversation, but I wouldn't criticise too heavily for that. Pizzas were flavoursome and the tomato (the taste of which separates a good pizza from a great pizza) was delicious. In all honesty, the pizza reminded me very much of how Pizzeria Italia at Four Lane Ends used to taste before it unfortunately changed hands. Perhaps it didn't live up to the hype, and the pizza tasted a slight step down from old Pizzeria Italia, though that was the absolute pinnacle.

What a find! We were stuck running errands around Newcastle and it came to lunch time. We searched for decent places to eat that would be open and Mazcalzone came up. We ended up driving longer to it than we expected and the area is notorious for its lack of parking opportunity but we got lucky. Mazcalzone is a Sardinian cafe. The name is amusing cos it means scoundrel. The menu consists of Italian classics but some have a Sardinian twist, such as typical Sardinian pasta shapes or Sardinian cured meat etc. The vibe of the place is relaxed and fairly trendy. The staff (front of house) are Italian and very welcoming and friendly. Not the overwhelming veneer of charm you get in many Italian restaurants but genuine hospitality and pleasant demeanour. Onto the food: Don't expect to be magically transported to Cagliari but the food is cooked nicely and my girls (5 and 2) cleaning it up is a testament to this. Pasta cooked well with very nice versions of popular sauces. Other people's pizzas looked fantastic. The hot drinks were of high quality too. I also had the hot chocolate which is proper. Not a lilac watery drink but dark, oozy, shiny chocolate as it should be. We did have puddings but I had to concede to my daughters' choices although I was eyeing the cannolini and bocconcini al amarena which sadly I did not partake. I am unfortunately not in the area often enough to know when I will be back but I would recommend it to anyone. Thank you.
