Lovely little intimate Japanese restaurant. We went for a birthday meal and were made to feel extremely welcome! Had a few drinks, some delicious sushi - all with spectacular fresh ingredients! Really quick service and very attentive! I highly recommend!

Flawless experience. There is not enough positive words to describe our experience at Kyowa. Fantastic ambience, expertly handled dishes, attentive and genuine service. I came with my wife to celebrate her birthday and we both came away saying it was the best meal we've ever had together! This is high praise indeed! The food was stunning, you could tell that the ingredients were of the highest quality, Chef and his team were brilliant. Special shout to James who served us. We not only got fantastic service, but we also got to experience some of his close up magic tricks...this was the icing on the cake! We need to come back again very soon, to sample even more of the quality food and James has promised to show us some other tricks as well!

We were on holiday in the area and had to make sure we made two visits before we headed back! The Ramen is the best we’ve ever had and we’d highly recommend the sushi platter. Beautifully authentic, high quality, flavoursome Japanese food in a clean, light setting. It's a bit more expensive than similar offerings, but you're paying for the extra quality, and I'd say it's worth it. The chef is very friendly and happy to have a quick chat about the food if he has a moment! It's very small and very popular, with good reason, so booking is a must for the evening. Lunch times occasionally have space for walk ins.

As a foreigner I found it very upsetting that Plymouth, even the UK in general, didn't have any good Japanese restaurants, well since Kyowa opened I can say they at least have ONE brilliant Japanese restaurant. The food here is traditional, the location is traditional, the owner is traditional. All in all this makes for the perfect combo! This is the only place in the whole UK I've found affordable, excellent Japanese food. 10/10 this place deserves 10,000 more 5⭐ reviews.

This is not a statement I use liberally; KYOWA is the best place to eat out in Plymouth and it's surrounding areas. I walked into the light, airy and beautifully designed restaurant to be welcomed by friendly staff. We had a wonderful time at Kyowa recently. The restaurant is beautiful in its presentation, very bright and clean throughout. The service was excellent. I ordered the unagi (eel) kabayaki and it is some of the best I have had. We will definitely be back to try the beautiful sushi that we could see being prepared. Kyowa is a fantastic addition to Plymouth, a real gem.

BEST JAPANESE RESTAURANT IN PLYMOUTH. I’ve been several times, the salmon teriyaki bento and tonkotsu ramen are my favourite. The taste is so rich and very traditional Japanese style. The staff and owner are very nice as well. Very recommended to dine here.

Absolutely brilliant. Food is delicious and cooked traditionally, staff are fantastic (especially chef who is very interactive with customers!) And the service is impeccable. We've been about 5 times since it opened and every time has been a great experience. Great wagyu beef available as well. Just for information, at the time of writing this they don't serve hot drinks, and seating is very limited so booking is almost essential. Best Asian restaurant in Plymouth for sure!

Excellent food and experience. The chief was very friendly and allowed us to eat despite being fully booked. We had tonkatsu ramen and chicken katsu curry. Both was excellent, the pork in the ramen was particularly spectacular. If you're coming in the evening I would really recommend you book as it seems they're very busy. Definitely coming back again!

This place is absolutely wonderful - it’s so cosy and intimate which really adds to the friendly atmosphere. From the moment you walk in both the server and chef make you feel so welcome! I went with my boyfriend for my birthday and we both ordered the tonkotsu ramen and some vegetable tempura and avocado hosomaki to share and the quality of the food was absolutely impeccable. Seeing the chef add the finishing touches to each dish before sending them out just adds to the experience as well. Love the restaurant atmosphere, very cosy and intimate. Really great service, they were quick to serve and checked on us every now and again. Really pretty and well presented food, you can tell the chef takes care in his food presentation which I love! Portion sizes were a good size for what you pay, and I love the variety of the menu which you don’t get at many Japanese restaurants around here. The only thing I would say is that the food needed a little bit more flavour, I know that Japanese cuisine is suppose to be about appreciating the subtle flavours but that can only be obtained when you get the best and freshest ingredients. Unfortunately in Plymouth, you can’t really get that. I was just hoping for something a bit more amazing, since the wait time for booking this restaurant was about a week. I would still love to try this restaurant again, because maybe I didn’t try their best dish on their menu. If you want a new experience, and want to try something fancy you should come here.

Yet that is way surpassed by Chao’s attention to detail and focus as he prepares the sushi, truly puts his heart and soul into every piece, every roll and you can taste it. Incredible flavors, exquisite texture combinations. We’ve eaten sushi in top restaurants and tiny street stalls in 5 continents over many years and this is the best we’ve had since eating at the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo 7 years ago. Wonderful Japanese with fantastic Ramen and friendly staff. Tonight was my second time here and this time for a birthday. The staff couldn’t have been friendlier or more attentive and the food is incredible. Best ramen I have had for a long while- the broth is incredible and the noodles just perfect. We also ordered some sushi which was superb and a range of starters which were all delicious. I loved the pumpkin croquettes and the chicken gyoza. Tempura was wonderfully crisp and light and absolutely perfect. The place is small with only a few tables so I think booking is a wise idea. Can’t wait to come back!

A truly, truly authentic Japanese experience in the heart of Plymouth. Having been to japan this place really is true to the real thing. From the classy, chic & uncomplicated decor to the beautiful little trinkets it really does transport you. It’s tiny & only has 3 tables but if you go, you’ll understand why as the attention to detail of the staff is second to none & everything is prepared with time, care & attention. The perfectionism is unreal and it really shows. Due to it being so small even though we’d booked other customers hadn’t finished so we had a 30/40 minute wait for the table, but I have to say the amazing waiter (who was the only one) could not have been kinder, more polite or attentive! He made us feel happy about waiting and his demeanour is to be highly commended. He really was a super star & made sure we were kept happy, engaged & looked after whilst we waited. The wonderful owners/chefs also provided us with free mochi which was sublime. When we were finally seated our food came really quickly due to the magnificence of the waiter who had taken our order whilst we waited. The Fudo zendo sunshi was lovely & even my mushroom & cucumber hating husband adored it. Both the veg & prawn tempura was out of this world excellent & was coated in the lightest batter I’ve ever experienced & came with a vinegar dipping sauce that was so unique. Both main courses were good with the Katsu having the perfect sweet to spice ration & my mushroom ramen was packed full of veggies & was exactly like those we had in Japan. Unfortunately I couldn’t finish mine due to acid reflux problems but this was no problem for the staff who completely understood & again the waiter related to me & made me feel much better about the situation. It’s very rare ambience, food & service are all as top quality as this, but KYOWA manages it with ease. I’d like to say a HUGE thanks to the chefs & also, more than anyone else our fantastic waiter (I’m sorry I didn’t get your name) you are truly truly PHENOMENAL & should be so proud of yourself, you made our meal.

Wow. What a treasure. Hospitality truly lives here with fantastic service from the two young waiting staff who so kindly squeezed me in at the last moment. Tonkotsu ramen was amongst the best I’ve had, and I’ve had a few. Do ask for the house chilli sauce too which has a wonderful Sechuan chilli heat. Lovely owner/chef too and the mochi Ice cream is a treat. Just hope the rest of Plymouth doesn’t cotton on because I’ll be gutted if I can’t get in.

We visited for the second time today and were welcomed with such charming warmth by both the waiter who had never met us before, and the head chef who met us only once 6 weeks ago and still remembered us. I must give equal praise to both the food and the service as great care is taken with both - in Kyowa you will always be made to feel perfectly comfortable and looked after, before being served the most delectable and beautifully prepared food you've possibly ever had. I could keep raving on about the amazing hospitality, atmosphere and menu, but it's best to see for yourself. Just don't forget to book a table in advance!

Amazing venue. We booked in advance for a Thursday evening meal for two of us. The (new) member of wait staff was fantastic, if still evidently learning. We felt attended to, but not harassed, and didn't feel we needed to ask for anything out of turn. The food was beyond sublime. It was a special occasion for us so we tried the A5 Wagyu, which was amazing. Couldn't fault the ramen, though we'll have to come back again to try the Tantan ramen as they were out that night. The chef and kitchen staff were smiley, and the chef evidently knows exactly what he is doing both with cooking and plating. The restaurant itself is very small, but doesn't feel cramped, is spotlessly clean, and the decor is really interesting, with the wall mirror helping the place feel bigger. 100% we will be back again very soon.
