Reviews of ASK Italian
R.
Excellent service. Our waitress was great. As a group of 11 had booked in advance, they put us in a lovely place surrounding the decorative. Beautiful building, a great place to take pictures! The staffs are extremely friendly and communicate directly with us by using gestures. After all, we are all deaf. We had a great time here and definitely will come back here again.
The foods are delicious and fresh.
Thank you for making our night fantastic!

We visited Ask Italian in York on a Saturday lunchtime. We had been bought a gift voucher as an Anniversary present so had booked ahead. We were entitled to the three course set menu and explained that I have a food allergy. We were given their allergen guide book so we could check every item. This was such brilliant service and made our whole experience so enjoyable as there were no concerns regarding my food choices. All of the staff were made aware and checked at various intervals that my choice was appropriate for me.The food and service were excellent.Would happily visit them again.
X. L.
The waiter was very nice and the restaurant offered a £10 off £30 voucher near my birthday. We recommend the tiramisu and the lemon juice as a pre-dinner drink.
M. G.
Amazing service today. Came for lunch without booking and were seated straight away. The food was delicious and came very quickly. Great atmosphere and beautiful building. Highly recommended.
J. T.
Amazing restaurant. Beautiful atmosphere, amazing food and great choice of drinks. We also got tap water to share for 2 but was room temperature as no ice was provided, small amount of ice in glass for first drink but no ice in the actual jug
T. B.
What a fabulous building for this restaurant. It's worth the visit just for that alone.
Standard Ask food, can't complain. Friendly staff and food arrived quickly. Very accommodating to young kids too. Recommended
F. M.
Lovely place, good atmosphere and good service. Didn't wait long to be seated and serve. And food came pretty fast too. Xx.
The white plate is a carbonara and the blue is a purple pesto pasta with long beans and chicken x

Very nice decor in the Great meeting hall. Nice and spacious. Service was very good and attentive. GLUTEN FREE: Prepared in a separate area with separate utensils and cooked in separate ovens. Well explained and reassured on that front. Good variety of dishes ranging from starters to dessert. Portions are a good size. Food quality was good with a reasonable price. Paid on the app which was easy enough.
S. H.
Solid food, reasonable prices. Staff was friendly. The building is absolutely gorgeous!

Nice place with tasty food. It really surprised me!! Also the interior is so beautiful and big - so elegant and impressive. I had the sensation I was in a palace.
S. M.
The ambience is just amazing and the food was also very delicious.. I ordered a pizza with vegetarian toppings. The base was thin and terrific. The basil leaves, olives, mushroom alll tasted well. The quantity was sufficing for 1 person if you are damn hungry. No doubt enjoyed every bite of pizza till the end.
It's located in quite middle of the city too. If you are in york don't miss to eat once here. 5/5 for food, service and ambience.
Prebooking is essential and recommended if going on weekend or on a public holiday otherwise you would have to end waiting more or might be have to return back.

Restaurant is in a stunning building. Was able to walk straight in. Was given a small lemonade to taste. Had 2 elderberry g&ts, a calzone and butterfly prawns. The calzone was quite spicy. Got a good portion of prawns with small garlic bread. The elderberry was very refreshing. The staff were friendly. The toilets were clean
J. S.
A beautiful building to visit anyway as it the Assembly Rooms. I went there to celebrate my friends wedding and the service and food were very good and we all had an enjoyable evening. We had our own smaller private rooms which was nice but the main room is definitely worth a visit.
M. C.
Really nice experience all round. Strange setting, really big, bright open space reminded me of eating school dinner in the hall, albeit a much better standard. Only saw one waiter the whole time we were there with the restaurant being at maybe 1/3 capacity. The kid was running a really smooth ship, definitely deserved tipping.
Food was decent but I did think it was a tad expensive for a chain Italian restaurant. Especially drinks which were nothing short of a rip off.
Would recommend.

This is a great place for lunch or dinner. In a historic building with high ceilings - chandeliers as well! Very convenient if you are in York city centre.
We have eaten here many times and always enjoyed it. 5 stars for service and food.
Worth joining their mailing list as they will send you lots of vouchers!
T. S.
Food as expected for this chain. Pizzas and good pasta dishes. Good selection. Great building but very noisy due to the acoustics of the building. Very hard working staff on Saturday night...kept on top of a large number of covers across some large groups and didnt lose sight of the couples. Impressive.
A. B.
Great vegan options! One of the best cheesey garlic breads I’ve eaten tbh my partner loved his pizza too
K. Y.
We were a big party and the food was good, the staff were friendly and they kept us topped up with drinks. It would have been 5 stars but I found the process of ordering dessert in advance very strange (I understand for mains but desserts, really?) and they were serving then while people were still finishing their mains, and it was unclear if more could be ordered - I found it a bit chaotic to be honest!
M. R.
Really cool place. Good service. Nice coffee & cake !
A. S.
Beautiful neo classical architecture to admire while eating delicious pasta !
J. H.
Bit of a queue to get in even though we had pre booked but we were seated quickly and table service was good. Food as you would expect from Ask decent quality but nothing too out if the ordinary. The building is really nice inside with the lovely high ceilings.
J. O.
Excellent food, non-existant service. Despite there being many free tables, and only 2 parties in front of us had to wait close to 10 minutes to be seated and was told our waiter "would be right over". No waiter ever arrived. Ordered through the website and paid through the website, never had any interactions with any staff except when food was brought. Food was excellent though, really, really tasty. I wasn't going to leave a tip because there was no service to tip. However when paying through the website it stated tips are shared with all staff including kitchen staff. The food was so good, the kitchen staff defintely deserve a tip. Thank you chef.
G. M.
Wow, what a building.. York Assembly Rooms very grand, feels like you could be at a ball 🤗
Food was well up to ASK standard and staff wete super friendly 👍
p. d.
Food was so nice and we had great service from the staff. We were seated right away and got our orders on time. Food portion was superb, can serve two. 😉 Special mention to the calamari, can't stop eating it! 😁
G.
The food and the service were great. Having eaten in 2 Ask Italians in the last 2 week, this was by far the better in terms food and surroundings. I would recommend it to anyone wanting good food at a reasonable price.
N. H.
Took about 10 mins before someone checked our party in. Food was to a good standard except for one meal. The server had taken the correct details but the kitchen delivered the wrong accompaniments including cold uncooked broccoli. To be fair the meal was taken off the bill but it still spoiled the experience. Drink orders were hot and miss and had to be chased. Seemed like there just weren’t enough staff for the number of bookings accepted.
E. J.
Amazing interior. The building dates back to 1735! Great food too!

22 and a half long years ago we got engaged in York and had a fab meal in the stunning Assembly Rooms at the then relatively new ASK chain.
Wind the clock on and for our 20th wedding anniversary break we returned to York and having stumbled upon ASK again close to our accommodation we decided to visit again.
In the intervening years ASK has become a huge chain with a fairly bog standard menu and our dining tastes have matured somewhat so I wasn't expecting to be wowed but my, what a bang average experience.
Yes it was busy, and clearly there were not enough staff on. The harassed manager / supervisor was trying to deal with a queue of willing diners and clear and clean some tables at the same time.
We ordered, and our wine took quite a while to come. Our mains followed a little later. The lasagne was okay but the beef brisket was tepid at best. We immediately sent it back. The waitress, I didn't get her name, apologised and returned it obviously having had it microwaved a few minutes later. She also said it would be taken off the bill - we didn't ask for this but fine.
The food was okay, about what I expect from a chain of this type.
More worrying was when we had finished we declined a dessert menu but no effort was made to clear our plates at all. And several other tables around us had dirty plates on that no-one even bothered to clear. One table must have been left for an hour without clearing. Surely this is just basic hospitality.
The Assembly Rooms is a stunning venue but the lack of service, poor standards and general apathy of the place said it all. The next night we went to an independent venue in York and had a fabulous experience.
Sad really, but there it is. I'm sure people will keep going to ASK, just don't expect anything special.
A. C.
First time ever eating at an ASK Italian, we had a gift card we wanted to use up from last year and we were pleasantly surprised. Food was very tasty, service was good. My only comment would be that the option to order to your table seemed to create some ambiguity around if you were ordering by app or via staff! Otherwise all very good.
K. S.
Beautiful surroundings for a nice meal but the food doesn't match the setting. Don't get me wrong it's OK...just not memorable. I love Italian food and seafood so ordered the prawn and crayfish tagliatelle. It was tasty enough but to be honest if I'd closed my eyes I could have been eating tinned pasta. Apart from the one large prawn in its shell on top, the rest in the dish were the tiny little shrimp you get in frozen ready meals. There was very little crayfish although it was tasty when I got some. Also, and this is a very petty complaint, I hate food served in blue bowls...it reminds me of school dinners and visits to my granny's in the 70s! This is my second Ask Italian experience (see my other review of Warrington branch) and I was hopeful it would improve my opinion but, sadly, I remain a bit "meh" about the whole franchise.
A. P.
Arrived not too long before close, staff was still happy to seat us and didn't make us feel rushed to order and eat. Food was great with some very good vegan options, definitely a good call for food
A. E.
A delicious pizza stuffed with chicken, mushroom, courgette, and other stuffs
A. J.
Great service and amazing food, the chocolate gnocchi are to die for. Have the From Calabria with love pizza every time I visit and can't get enough of it! Who knew pizza with honey was so nice? Will definitely be visiting again soon.
A. L.
Really fast food, lots of options including for vegetarians as well. Lovely atmosphere and decor, would be a lovely place for a date. In the old ballroom of the city, so there are marble pillars and beautiful chandeliers. Nice presentation of dishes, and friendly staff. Only issue was when trying to use student discount it wasn't accepted which made the meal pricier than we thought it would be, but overall reasonable for a treat meal.
d. j.
This restaurant could not have been more accommodating to us. We were a party of 8 on a busy weekend and in December during the class market busiest time. They made room for us where they really didn't have any. I think they took pity with us being such a large group. Our waiter was so friendly and attentive. All staff were in Xmas jumpers. We were given complimentary shots of home made lemonade once seated. The food was beautiful. If they didn't have what we wanted they made it... I'd have given 6 stars.
T. B.
Outstanding food and service. The waiter who served us (possibly manager) made us feel at home as soon as we enter the building. He brought a cushion for my pregnant wife and proceeded to make our meal memorable by telling us about the beautiful food hall and bringing us a free pot of the sweet chillies we enjoyed on our pizza!
The atmosphere is buzzing and the hall is spectacular (see pictures), well worth a visit!!
J. S.
Beautiful setting and great service. We thoroughly enjoyed the bread and salad along with our meals. I had the classic carbonara and my wife had a small pizza.
D. D.
Delicious, quick service, polite staff, thoroughly enjoyed our meal and our evening there AND they do gluten free!
S. J.
Gorgeous restaurant and building. Staff were slow at seating people, we had a 5 minute wait for a table. Table service was fast and our waiter was very friendly. The garlic bread with balsamic onions was very nice, the penne aribbiata was nice but not 'fiery' as described even with extra chilli.
k. g.
Could not fault "ASK Italian " in anyway, we arrived on early evening Fri with no booking, they found us a table, my partner is celiac and the waiting staff could not have been more helpful, we we're going to a show and asked if the food would be cooked in time, we we're assured it would be and in super fast time it arrived, labelled Gluten free and was superb.
Thank you
A. W.
Historic building in a super convenient location, I've been to ASK numerous times prior to their refurb. Sadly they've gone down a very mediocre, sub-par hipstery route, and the gorgeous Georgian atmosphere has gone. Still though, it's not awful, albeit cold and fast-food esque. Service was lovely, though, with a really pleasant waitress for whom nothing was too much trouble. Food was just about acceptable, but the presentation was superior to the taste. Honestly, you'd be better going to Pizza Express for the food, or cook it yourself. Bruschetta was average, lasagna too. Decent wine selection, but few good beers and no grappa, which is a crime for an Italian restaurant. Fine, but not special.
R. R.
Atilla was our waiter, he was super helpful and the food was yummy. It was really busy and he had so many tables but still offered us excellent service, thank you!
B.
I was blown away by the interior of the restaurant. It was once a ballroom dance hall and most of the original decor is still hanging.
B.
Been several times. Brilliant food, service, and building - so beautiful looking around you while at your table! Definitely recommend
A. -. L. -. L.
Amazing decor, nice service, nice quality food. I had the Calzone and although it tasted lovely, I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't big enough to fill me up and it didn't come with any chips to fill the meal out a bit. Extra chips cost another £3.95 and considering the Calzone was £13.50, it'd have gotten too expensive. So I left not fully fed.
L. M.
Such a lovely building, great food and friendly staff. Our server was called Kuba I think and he was so helpful. We had loads of vouchers to spend so we stuffed ourselves!
Excellent cocktails - I've added a pic of my Aperol Spritz, although they'd been so busy it wasn't in the normal glass I'm told, but it was very tasty and had an olive on top too, bonus!
We had 'Nduja dough balls as a starter, would highly recommend, new to me and very tasty. Also I had the mushroom risotto which I've had before and will have again because it's very good.
My only regret is that I feasted so hard I didn't have space for dessert.
P. Y.
Very family friendly, reasonably priced, good grub and in a beautiful building. The crayons and pre-meal snack helped keep the kids entertained, and the spaghetti got a grubby thumbs up. Thanks to the staff for a great experience 😊
J. B.
Ask Italian is a chain. The food is great but not exceptional. Having said that, if you are in York then I would recommend it for a meal if only because of its location. It occupies some eighteenth century assembly rooms and has been decorated accordingly. Worth going just to be in those surroundings. Very Jane Austen.
S. S.
Who doesn't love pizza! :)
On the day I visited was left standing at the entrance for 20mins before a member of staff showed us to our table. There was a queue forming and the restaurant was reveltivly empty. I must have gone when there were short staffed, so won't give 1 star.
I. M.
Food was gorgeous in this place and the staff were helpful. Beautiful building also. I've not went for 5 star due to the lack of aircon in the premises as it was too hot but other than that I can't fault it!
v. s.
The place is grand and spacious with very high ceilings. The service is friendly, but the pasta, the pizza, and the drinks (I have ordered a cocktail) are not something to write home about unfortunately.
C. C.
Set in the ols assembly rooms, a great place for large parties as the space is immense.
A premium chain, so you know what your getting, fast and friendly service.
Pizzas, Calzones and garlic bread cooled fresh on a stone baked oven. I also had the Quinoa and goats cheese salad which was nice.
J. E.
Stunning Building at Ask Italian in York, it's very historic and special. Food and service we're both very good.
L. J.
Lovely food, great service and very quick. Venue was probably the nicest Italian I've ever been to!
H. M.
Great service and great food as always.
M. D.
Amazing setting, very grand. Service was great, they were particularly helpful with making sure I was safe with my allergies. Food was delicious and there was a good amount of choice.
Visited again this evening. Again the staff were very attentive to my allergy requirements and we were well looked after. However, this has bugged me before, as my hearing isn't great and they play fairly loud, distorted and strangely inappropriate for the setting music. So, for this reason, I am dropping them 1 star.
S. d. D.
I had lunch here because it was included with the york pass. Staff was lovely and the place is just amazing. Being Italian myself I was of course disappointed with an overcooked plate of pasta, but I have to say the plate was huge and the sauce nice!
A. P.
The food and service is very good. We had a 3 course meal with one soft drink each for less than £60.00 (May 2022).
J. R.
We arrived at the restaurant and was seated straight away and made aware they were understaffed today, however that didn't seem to stop anything, service was friendly and very prompt, our server Monika was absolutely amazing, polite and friendly and fantastic service skills, very helpful with my partners gluten menu choices, this has made for a fantastic wedding anniversary meal and Monika is a credit to this restaurant,
5 stars well deserved, food, service and drinks were all fantastic
C. R.
Food was amazing, the interior actually felt like stepping into a Palace, the staff were really friendly, and the prices are reasonable. Couldn't fault it at all.
C. M.
Went to Ask and was greeted by the lovely Waitress Monika. She remember me and my friends from 3 months previous,it was lovely to be welcomed once again and made is feel special. She is professional, friendly and passionate about customer service and a great asset to you. Thanks Monika from Roy, Doreen and Cathy .X
E.
The food here is excellent for all ages the restaurant is clean airy and spacious .The whole building inside and out is very impressive. You can if you wish order and pay using your smartphone, my only criticism was the price of the drinks its akin to profiteering
p.
Absolutely unbelievable setting of this restaurant. Yoi feel like you are sitting in 3* michelin restaurant but you pay same as anywhere else in ASK italian. Lovely food. We have tried seafood soup and it was great. Recommend!
S. S.
Friendly staff, excellent food, spectacular atmosphere. Highly recommended.
g. h.
Very slow service ,food Luke warm ,but tasty. Restaurant was fairly quiet but for a large party, seen a lot more guests there.
V. N.
Only come here for the famous, award winning olive oil cake!!!!! And the indoor decor and building is gorgeous. Food was decent. Do eat the award winning options. Those are the best win.
E. T.
Big and nice place. There was a bit of a waiting time but it was understandable due to the high number of customers. Food was delicious and well presented as well as the desserts. There was a big variety of dishes and drinks.
r. i.
The BEST HOSPITALITY PLACE EVER DEFINED. cozy atmosphere and friendly services and quality of food is well established in here.i PERSONALLY AUTHENTICATE THIS PLACE AS BEST IN DINNING IN YORK.ASK FOR JEET .
GOD BLESS THIS PLACE.
M. W.
Basic Italian food in a beautiful, historic setting. My calzone was tasty and reasonably priced. It's a large restaurant that can accommodate groups. It was slightly noisy and echoey when a loud group came in, but that's not really their fault.
J. G.
Very nice interior design , fancy and delicious food . However pretty expensive and small portions 👍
K. M.
We went for lunch with our York passes and were very pleased with the lunch options. Also the building is beautiful!
G. P.
Went twice, service was excellent. You gotta try the profiteroles, it was to die for
M. H.
Excellent food and the waitress was absolutely incredible with the 3 year old in the party. Heartily recommended for groups with kids!
K. A.
We had a lovely time. Our waitress, Grace, was lovely and very accommodating. She made sure we were all happy throughout our meal. The food was great as always. Definitely recommend.
C. D.
Had a really nice family meal here a few days ago. Beautiful setting.
K. G.
Very busy, and there was a queue to get in. Staff were friendly and efficient. Food was lovely. The only downside was that I ended up wearing 2 glasses of prosecco, when the waitress tripped. The drinks were replaced, and the cost of our previous drink was knocked off the bill. Was a cold and wet walk home though.
M. J.
We were a big bunch, around 20 people. We had placed in orders beforehand, but we were even able to add dishes to the order (starter - dessert) after we had arrived. Took a long time to get water on the table, would have been nice if it had been there when arrived. When we paid for the bill (separately) there was no information regarding the tip that was added to the bill, which caused a lot of confusion. Food was good, not spectacular, but we were mostly happy with what was served.
N. S.
Popped in for lunch after my graduation. We were seated quickly just before our reservation time as there was space available. The staff is very friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious.
R. A.
Great service and nice food. A very pleasant lunch. Thank you.
W. L.
We had a lovely impromptu lunch with our 7 month old daughter here the service was prompt and attentive and it’s a lovely building.
M. F.
We were a party of 7. Had to wait quite a while to be seated. Service was very good and efficient. Rest of party seemed happy with their food, I had braised beef with pasta but not overly impressed.
M. W.
First time we have had a meal at this beautiful italian restaurant. The food was amazing and the service time was very quick. Our waitress Anabel was superb and couldnt do enough for us. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience
L. B.
A really great family restaurant. The kids menu is brilliant and they're patient and kind with my little girl. The service is almost always great and it's fabulous to have lunch is such a grand venue
O.
Always lovely coming here on our trips to York. It's such a lovely building and the food is great.
S. B.
This was good. Not been to Ask before but been to Pizza Express plenty. Comparing the two, Ask is awesome. PIZZA express rubbish. It is better priced and has a much more edible selection. I had an amazing pizza that not only had breadcrumbs on but also Honey. Who would have thought it, but it was great and it worked. Don't get me started on the puddings. You are in for treat, literally. Pizza express is more like "darling, I can't decide between this small overpriced pizza or that small oversized pizza". Ask is neither small portions or over priced. Also, specifically, this restaurant was clean and friendly. Great serving staff.
j. b.
A very special meal out with a very special person. Enjoyed lasagne, pizza and chocolate brownie.
T. A.
Beautiful building, service good but food options limited due to using The York Passes
S. H.
Very fancy interior and the service was fantastic. Prices are what you would expect of a city centre restaurant e.g. around £13 for a lasagne but the portions on this particular dish were enough to keep me happy until around 7pm (when the alcohol liquid diet took over)
A. C.
Lovely food and friendly staff. Lovely inside too, wasn't expecting that.
G. S.
Excellent food, surroundings and staff. Highly recommended!
S. S.
Beautiful interior! I think our waitress was possibly very new, but still provided great service. I got the ravioli burger and it was amazing.
R. W.
Beautiful building and really helpful front of house staff. I had problems with my meal which they swiftly rectified.
h. h.
Really tasty pizza, bit on the small side and rather too expensive for the size I thought. Very quick and friendly service though.
J. S.
Had a classic Stromboli pizza which was perfect for a cheeky midweek treat. Loved the light, crunchy base & semolina flour. Staff were really friendly & professional throughout. Prepare to be impressed by the interior of the assembly rooms if you haven't been before. Winner.
W. C.
Fabulous food and excellent staff. Great value too!
G. Q.
Good food. Great building and location.
B. A.
Grace was an amazing waitress and an asset to the company, very attentive. Service was great, great product knowledge.
C. B. (. B.
The most beautiful restaurant in a 300year old ballroom. Massive pillars and chandeliers a must see!
N. B.
Excellent service, good portion sizes and delicious pizzas.
K. C.
Set in one of the most spectacular buildings in York, the former Assembly room. Ask Italian usually come up with the goods, this is no exception. Very friendly and helpful young staff, prompt service and food to match.
C. C.
We had a lovely time at Ask. The team we friendly and the food was great!
D. B.
Stunning building and amazing deco the best looking ASK I’ve ever been to. Food was good but everything was warm rather than hot.
R. M.
Beautiful inside and the food is really good quick service and nice wine selection.
J. B.
We came in for lunch as we heard the building was gorgeous and to be fair it is, not my cup of tea but my wife was in love. We had some really nice mocktails for lunch and pasta, but the service was pretty poor, they had 3 wait staff on for under 10 tables at peak but the room is so big they spend more time walking between tables than actually taking orders. They should've seated us nearer eachother, would've been a logical solution but we were spread across the whole room just didn't make sense.
S. L.
Service a little slow... Salad excellent while beef ragu with cheese ravioli OK
A. B.
Stunning backdrop to a restaurant, lovely staff, interesting menu, tasty food great value. We had a fun, happy & great time celebrating an early Christmas with friends from our primary/secondary school day's.
H. H.
Great place. Great atmosphere. Meal was perfect and staff were very friendly and efficient. Been here a few times before. Recommend highly.
k. y.
Lovely building and decor.
Enjoyed good pasta dish and sweet. Friendly and efficient service. Enjoyable experience
S. C.
Lovely meal. Great venue. Like eating in a cathedral!!
j. s.
Thanks for a really positive experience yesterday. Visited with my sister and her twin boys aged 5. Friendly fun service with a smile, from lemonade "shots" to "the best pudding ever" (a superbly presented banana brownie with chocolate, marshmallows etc - a kid's dream come true). Adult meals also good. One star removed as mojito was underwhelming for £7.
T. R.
What surprises you is the interior of the building. It looks great from outside but once you walk in through the main entrance, the interior is fabulous. Quite ornate with well spaced out tables. Service was very good, no long waiting times but is wasn't that busy when I visited. Food was up to scratch for a Ask Italian. Would recommend as a safe bet in a great setting.
T. W.
Great venue! I've been here on multiple occasions with family and have not been let down yet! The Food is fantastic. The wine is wonderful and the staff are so lovely. If you're planning on going for a nice Italian this is the place!
R. W.
Prebooked a table tonight at Ask for 6 of us as a family get together. The food was good, the service was good, the spacious layout of tables was great in current covid times. The beautiful building with high ceilings meant it wasn't too hot in the current heatwave. We had three courses and all enjoyed our choices. All in all a lovely evening and Ask continues to deliver a high standard. It may be a chain restaurant but this branch certainly delivers all that we could wish for.
A. T.
The building, grand as it is, highlights noise, so this is getting on for Pizza Express levels of avoidable yet sadly deemed trendy clattering din.
A. R.
A typical ASK Italian restaurant in the old York Assembly Rooms. Lovely service and food served within a unique and beautiful location.
M.
Very, very good. Most reviews mention the building which is nice but also quite noisy due to the high roof. The food quality was excellent with four of us ordering varied dishes from starters through to dessert. Each dish uniquely flavoured, well portioned without being over the top.
Service was friendly, relaxed, courteous, efficient and attentive even though the restaurant seemed almost full. We've got the name Kuba on our receipt, so a big thank you to you, the kitchen and other staff that serviced our table. Quite possibly the best meal we've had since returning home to the UK in 2019.
No negatives really, but your ears will appreciate the easing of being outside afterwards and the dessert menu is a bit biased towards sweet chocolate dishes.
All in all very happy and will be returning more regularly to try some other dishes off the simple but well charactered menu. Prices are very reasonable given the quality of the food.
S. S.
Wonderful experience looking forward to go again, waiter's been nice even if place was crowded and the food was excellent👌
P. C.
I turned up without a booking at 7:30pm but there was no tables available. It was suggested that I return after 8:15pm as they had a few big parties that should have been finished by this time.
And indeed this was the case. Good food and what a fantastic building.
w. 1.
Fantastic food and location. Friendly and polite staff unlike the liverpool branch.
J.
We went for my daughters 5th birthday. The food was tasty, the service was good and I wanted to say a big thank you as when they brought out the desserts, they sang Happy Birthday, and had put a candle on her dessert, with Happy Birthday written around it. It was a lovely touch, which she loved. 👏😁
C. C.
Not as good as previous visits. Underwhelmed by the food for the price paid.
S. F.
Beautiful food very tasty! Great gluten free pizza!
T. H.
Food great service very good hygiene seemed to be fairly good. BUT WAITER'S HAD NO MASKS ON. SHAME THIS LET THEM DOWN
J. R.
Amazing service and great food all round. Grand building for an ASK, really spacious.👍
L. D.
Lovely waiter and lovely food. Has never let me down
K. H.
My husband and I have just had a meal at Ask York. It was special as it was for my birthday and also the first one since lockdown started last year. The meal was very tasty and the portions were generous. All the staff were so friendly and also informative re covid regulations. There was a really good atmosphere and other diners were friendly too. Will definitely be back.
Many thanks
Karen

Typical ASK chain quality food - it's very nice!
The best thing here is the location - the hall is absolutely beautiful and very large so often fabulous if you're looking for a last minute table!
M. L.
We visited Ask Italian last night ahead of a trip to the theatre across the road. I was a little apprehensive about booking as the show started at 7.30 and we weren't able to get to York before 6.15 as we travelled by train. In my experience the service as chain restaurants can be hit and miss and you're often waiting a while for food. From the minute we stepped through the door the service was efficient, attentive and friendly. The place was organised, the team knew their roles and what they were doing and everything ran like clock work, right down to the ordering service through the app. The food arrived in time and whilst the portions were plentiful my dish was a little under seasoned. Drinks and food arrived at speed, all was fresh and piping hot. The 2 things that have stopped me scoring a 5* were a lack of "thank you" and goodbye as we left (after leaving a 15% gratuity) and the under seasoned spaghetti dish. A great experience overall and we would definitely return.
M. H.
Fab food, staff and service. It's been another successful visit to Ask in York.
D. S.
Sooo good! Service was wonderful too.
S. M.
Food is delicious and staff very helpful and friendly. Chicken and Mushroom risotto is very good
j. b.
We had very tasty pizzas, in an amazing setting. Quick, efficient and very friendly waiter who tailored the standard pizzas to our grandchildren's preferences. We will definitely we will go again.
T. W.
Had our work Christmas do here and the food was amazing... The service was excellent... Definitely recommend
A. B.
Friendly staff and delicious food, wonderful atmosphere.
P. W.
Good food. Lovely building. Service was not good. Felt ignored by all serving staff. Had to wait 55 minutes for main course to be served
R. H.
Excellent service, amazing meal... well recommended!!
F. M.
The setting is lovely, in an old bank building. The service was attentive and quite good. The food was reasonably tasty and reasonably priced
D. D.
Excellent food, happy friendly staff relaxed setting
J. W.
Very disappointed, have visited before and enjoyed our meal but this will be our last time. Our adult meals were poor, the salad dry and brown and the chicken tough, the smallest Calzone Pollo ever with a tasteless filling. This visit was for a special occasion, would not recommend.
K. W.
Grand building for an Italian restaurant. Good service and good food at a reasonable price.
K. L.
Visited today for an early dinner with 4 children and couldn’t have enjoyed the experience more. The food was good quality and plentiful but the service was outstanding from all the staff, especially the maitre de Jeet. The children have various allergies but we’re dealt with fantastically, making them feel very welcome. Will definitely return soon
P. R. (.
An interesting restaurant in an impressive building. The food was lovely (as always at ASK) and the staff were friendly and pleasant, too. Not the widest range of drinks available but what was there was perfectly fine for us! Would visit again!
c. p.
Lovely place to eat food was really good had slow cooked lamb pizza and what a lovely place to eat your food.
E. G.
Amazing!! So happy with everyhing. I have a allergy to hazelnuts and how in depth they was to accommodate this was great.never had service like it. Thank you for a amazing evening. Food was lovely and staff was great. Be coming again before new year and bringing my mum this time. Keep up your hard work it really pays off.
Quick with your table service. Very pleased.
Thank you thank you !!!
A. S.
We were the second customers to eat at the restaurant on its reopening after the Covid closure. We were warmly welcomed and the new safety procedures were fully explained. A lot of trouble has been taken to make everything safe, and we were reassured by this. The meal was lovely- the menu has been upgraded with some new choices. The service was absolutely great. As we ate, more customers arrived and by the time we left , there were about a dozen people there. The reason this review is missing a star is because, on getting the bill, a 10% service charge had been added. The bill clearly said that this was optional, but I did not like this.
The decision to tip and by how much should be the customer's. I asked for the charge to be removed, which it was without hesitation, but it made me feel awkward and might affect my future dining choices! Previously the card machine had an option for the customer to add a tip. Far better to restore that and leave the customer to choose! This minor quibble aside we were glad to see the place back in business.
A. J.
one of the experience of having lunch at historic room and off course .. food was yummy !!
J. W.
First date night out in a while so we booked here because we knew there would be lots of space to socially distance!
As usual the food was great and tasty. Our service was very good and attentive, with a lot of care taken to avoid as much contact as possible. Food arrived in good time (not always the case when busy) so had a fab meal. Will be back again...and again!
A. O.
Seemed to be lacking in staff. Had to wait a little while at the entrance before getting noticed and shown a table despite being very quite. Great pizza but that is expected.
A. B.
It's a beautiful building but the food is not great. I think it is mostly prepared elsewhere and warmed up here.
D. C.
We came here because it was included on the York pass with fairly low expectations to be quite honest. How wrong we were! The setting is fabulous, the staff were fantastic, especially the young man whose name we didn't catch that looked after us for the evening, and the food was absolutely out of this world. Many thanks for making our last evening in York so enjoyable.
C. M.
Beautiful building. Amazing staff, no fault with service or how they are handling being open during the current pandemic. The food always came out hot and quick after order, staff would always check how food is and were quick to take away empty plates and glasses. Overall a great night in a great restaurant
J. C.
Loved it! A great experience, staff were attentive and food was delicious. Their offerings in terms of dietary requirements are also standout!
Well done Ask!
l. s.
Wonderful, will visit again, beautiful dining room
N. B.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, the food was so good, when asked for halal food staff were super helpful and made us feel very welcome, and sure enough everything was better than what we asked for. The place itself is very beautiful,, our visit was part of York Pass deal which I would recommend as well.. Thank you so much for making our anniversary a special one.
C. M.
Fantastic service accompanied with a beautiful building and a great menu. Very nicely dim lit 'mood lighting' was perfect for dining in not like most other eateries where they have bright LED flood lights above every table. 5 stars.
C. D.
Excellent waitress. Especially when asking about allergies. Also when a vegetarian dish not available suggested alternatives even having one made meat free for us adding either extra asparagus or mushrooms. Very clean all staff wore masks during covid. Tables cleaned quickly. Food delicious.
K. D.
This is the nicest ASK I've ever visited, set in an old ballroom, it feels very regal! A group of 12 dined here recently on a very busy Saturday evening and we recieved fantastic service. Our waitress was very friendly and efficient, we had a few special dietary needs within the group and she made ordering a breeze. The food arrived at the same time and we didn't have to wait long between courses and all party members were happy with their meals.
N. P.
Brilliant venue, so nice inside, like a grand stately home hall. The staff and food was also brilliant. I'm a vegan and the lentil ragu was lovely.
R. W.
Amazing building. Good food. Word of warning if you are visiting with a York Pass& if you have a child's pass they will be served a child's menu- even if they are hungry teens like mine were!
a. b.
Very nice , both the meals we had and the beautiful architecture inside the building, well worth the visit, also nice staff serving.
P. K.
We had a great time there yesterday. Welcome drink, kids activity sheet, good food, nice atmosphere in a beautiful building. Thank you for the Hungarian waiter for being so nice and for the kitchen staff for the little message with the food :)
P. K.
Beautiful setting. Food was excellent. Staff were all good.
H. C.
Visited on a Wednesday evening at 5pm and were shown to a table straight away. We hadn't booked. Attentive staff. I have a dairy allergy and I was given an appropriate menu. There was plenty to choose from. My dairy free pizza was very tasty, but not very warm. I should have sent it back really. The rest of the food was served warm. The building never ceases to impress - it does make the dining experience extra special in such a grand environment. Clean and tidy wash rooms. The evening was made even better by being able to cover the cost of our food with Tesco vouchers.
k. m.
Amazing place in York. Lovely Staff. Delicious food at a reasonable price. We will definitely come back. I highly recommend.
L. W.
Was lovely, we all enjoyed and we have a vegan and teen among us, we loved it. Staff where excellant food, perfect! Xx
S. T.
Like the rest of York the place is so full of history, it's the assembly rooms from another life where gavottes and waltzes were danced. It's very central and is open throughout the day and evening. Apart from that the food is excellent, service is quick and the staff friendly! The menu changes regularly and having eaten there many times with family and friends I can thoroughly recommend the place
R. G.
Great location, lovely food. Service was perfect.
s. w.
Starter was very basic but the rest of the meals was great, staff very friendly. Would recommend
M. S.
Caring and attentive staff. Reasonable prices with plenty of offers available. Food arrived in good time and was delicious. Plenty of gluten free options too which was a bonus. The York Centre setting also is a nice change with its grand building. Trustworthy chain where you know that you will come away satisfied.
L. M.
Always love visiting here when in York. The Assembly Rooms building is stunning. Food was lovely and arrived promptly. Good gluten free choices too.
A. K.
Visited this beautiful restaurant lunch time.Got served by Natalia and Attilo. Food arrived very fast and was absuloutley delicious!!!! Pollite and friendly staff. Nice xmas decor 👍
P. H.
Lovely food, great service and an amazing building
J. S.
Beautiful building, just called in for a coffee and a piece of cake very disappointed with the cake portion that came with the coffee, apart from that the service was excellent and the coffee was great.
e. h.
Fantastic place and food recommend to everyone.
J. A.
My girlfriend and I absolutely loved this place. We came here on our weekend trip to York. When she initially told me it was a chain restaurant I was a bit hesitant due to previous experiences with chain restaurants. But I felt silly for thinking that the moment I walked in and was greeted by the wonderful wait staff. The restaurants are clean, modern and very nice in general. The food on the other hand is... Absolutely perfect in every way; well priced, cooked perfectly and extremely delicious. Make sure you stop by if you're in town, it's worth the stop.
T. D.
Cannot recommend this particular Ask enough. We booked as a large party (40 including children) and we were thoroughly looked after. The service was excellent and efficient, the food was delicious and the surroundings are just beautiful. The Assistant Manager Jeet was especially brilliant. I'll be singing their praises for a long time. Perfect!!
c. r.
Went to Ask Italian Tuesday 24th August it was a truly lovely dining experience our waitress Katie was so helpful explaining the dishes and cocktails to us nothing was to much trouble ,3 courses of lovely food served to a high standard finished with a lovely coffee I feel it was a good price for 3 courses a cocktail and coffee in beautiful surroundings will visit again
J. H.
The restaurant is set in some form of old official building/house as the architecture is amazing. The tables are spaced very well, no feeling crammed in like other similar restaurants.
The food is all very fresh, and also arrived very quickly. As well as this it was also piping hot throughout and the flavours were great.
As well as this all of the staff at ASK were very attentive and friendly, checking we were satisfied with our meal regularly, etc.
D. T.
Quite possibly the best looking restaurant in York, good atmosphere and food. Note that you have to make a reservation as it's often fully booked.
E. R.
Beautiful place! Food, surroundings, staff and drinks were all absolutely fantastic. Catered around everything for my GF requirements and couldn't have been more attentive I really loved it here. Also have an amazing lunch deal which I was very impressed at the options you got for the price will definitely be back!
p. a.
Lovely setting good food
With friendly and helpful staff
E. O.
Absolutely love this place. Reasonably priced food and drink without scrimping on the quality. What a gorgeous setting to be in whilst you dine. I’ve been here many times when visiting York and will go back time and time again. If you’re looking for somewhere to impress without breaking the bank, this is definitely the place! And if you have a Taste Card you can use that here too (just check the t&c’s as it may change)
D. P.
We Were there in April for a birth day we pushed the boat out we all enjoyed the meals even my grandson .
J. K.
The food is ok. It's not going to blow your mind. We ordered calamari and although it was cooked beautifully, their was absolutely no flavour like it was frozen. The food is good, not mind blowing but good. The service is great and the venue is incredible. The view I had of my special lady was to die for.
L. J.
Beautiful decorated interior in keeping with the history of the building. Large airy and light eating area. Lovely attentive waiting staff. Wonderful food. All at a reasonable price. Couldn't 'Ask' for more. Thank you Ask.
H. D.
Great food and service. Very generous portions for the starters. Can order and pay through scanning a QR code which worked pretty well.
A. F.
We went here several years ago and absolutely loved it. However we were quite disappointed on this occasion. The building is absolutely beautiful. We had to wait a little while for a table but it was the races weekend. The queue was full of people that had drank too much already. The menu is fairly small with only a handful of pizza options which is what I enjoyed so much last time. The service was fast to be fair. However I noticed that other people were given a small glass of a yellow coloured drink when they were seated but we didnt get this. I ordered carbonara which was average. My husband ordered a chicken dish that was described as butterfly chicken, seasoned and roasted. However he felt he had been served a dish from the children's menu as it looked like a.fried chicken burger.
R. W.
Lovely building, great hygiene processes in place, friendly staff, we had the York Pass so had a free main from a smaller select menu but good choice and nice food. Chocolate gnocchi were a nice treat too!
A. J.
Stunning place, great service, wonderful staff and amazing, delicious food!
G. A. C.
Very nice and very fancy place but is a bit expensive
D. M.
Can never go wrong with ASK Italian.
The food is absolutely delectable, the staff are all exceedingly friendly and incredibly patient with the kids.
Beautiful setting for this branch as well, as the colonnade inside the dining hall really adds a touch of class.
R.
Tha place is stunning, but the taste only average
D. A.
The building this restaurant is located in is beautiful, one of the reasons we visited. Unfortunately the food was very average. We had the bruschetta to start and it was very disappointing for such a basic dish. The main courses were decent, but nothing spectacular. Service was good for a busy Friday night.
C. C.
The pollo piccante pizza is my favourite and the baked dough balls are so good!
K. T.
We got there just before 12 on a bsy Sunday in York and it was pretty much deserted! Within an hour it was packed! We didn't book either. It's in a lovely big hall as well. We had a starter and main meal each and one soft drink and it came to just under £45. We didn't have the cheapest either and IMHO, think that the menu is reasonably priced. Food and service were excellent.
E. S.
Accessibility into the building is very poor. There's a set of steps at the front entrance with no hand rail and only open doors to steady yourself on. Inside is level and open so is easy to get around.
Parking isn't available but if you have a blue badge there is space on double yellows just outside the building.
The food and service were excellent.
J. M.
Great food. Good service and polite staff as well as friendly.
H. G.
Wonderful Location. Brilliant food and a great price.
K. M.
The building is beautiful, however, this was the only outstanding part of the visit. Despite the restaurant not being particularly busy the service was quite slow. When the food did arrive it was nice, good portion sizes and was reasonably priced. Unfortunately the service let the restaurant down. We had to ask to pay five times and even then took another 15mins for the card machine to arrive. I would go again, but would factor in the service time.
C. F.
Lovely building and food is actually always tasty. This time I had a pizza and friends had a toddler with them so they ordered green soup. This wasn't good, not much flavor and very watery. They provided colouring pencils for the kid which was great and because it's such a big place it meant that even if kids are noisy it doesn't matter. This is a good choice! Always finish with their insanely delicious and calorific chocolate bomb pudding.
A. H.
Love it, surroundings are magnificent, the food is spot on staff can't do enough for you, I will most certainly be returning
B. C.
Super staff, fantastic gluten free menu, great food and the building was beautiful. Looking to find one closer to home.
K. G.
1st time at ask and in the current climate, I thought it was very good. Pizza was nice and tasty. Had a taste of the Calton and enjoyed it too. Would again if we were in York.
G. J.
The venue is stunning but the food does not compete with other pizza chains in this range. Pudding was great though
O. R.
Polite Friendly Service, Excellent food, very happy customer
J. B.
Very nice food and atmosphere, would've preferred a more engaging service but still a lovely night and would recommend to anyone!
D.
Good attentive service, very good quality food and in a wonderful setting... The building is amazing, apart from the weather you could imagine you are in Italy!
A. S.
The souffle was very good as well as the arancini. The fish was not that great. Great service.
c. g.
Absolutely fantastic. Wonderful service fabulous food. Highly recommend Ask Italian. We will be returning again. The inside, was blown away with all the Chandeliers and the mass amount of space. Spotlessly clean. Staff amazingly polite and professional. Cannot Highly recommend enough
A. M.
The inside of this building is absolutely beautiful. It would be perfect for a wedding, which when I asked they actually get a lot of and it's no surprise really. The service was good, me and my friend went for a mid week bite to eat so it was relatively quiet. The food was great I can't quite remember what I ate now but I know I enjoyed it. I love a good Italian and if you do, this is a good place to go if you don't want the average food from Bella Italia.
P. M.
Great food and very reasonably priced. You can usually get a table even at short notice. But what you're really paying for here is the location. It's a huge (no, really, I'm serious: HUGE) room with pillars, chandeliers...it doesn't look or feel like a branch of Ask. At night, it's a good place for groups or dates. By day, it's good for families. Taxi rank practically outside by York Minster.
R.
I love dining here mainly because of the beautiful building you get to eat in. The old Assembly rooms are stunning. The food is really good too and the staff are extra friendly and helpful particularly during these crazy Covid times. Highly recommend.
R. Z.
Just a beautiful place to have a meal, fabulous chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and great pizza. Staff were brilliant.
B. S.
Service was great.... but, when I didn't eat my 4 cheese pizza, as it wasn't nice (new recipe apparently that just doesn't work), no one would come and take it away. I can only think they didn't want the feedback...edit: our waiter did come and chat to us in the end and amended the bill, which was really nice. Not his fault, just poor recipe!
J. M.
Ask Italian always has a good atmosphere and friendly staff. The restaurant in York is something else entirely.
The dining hall has an incredibly tall ceiling, polished columns, and is so open plan as to feel like you are eating in a palace. It is beautiful. Also, it was here that we first discovered the cocktail range.
We came back two nights in a row, the first time for dinner, the second time as the place we had eaten had let us down with desserts. So we came back to Ask for a pudding and an Italian Twinkle. It felt very decadent, and made our weekend away just that little more special.
Thank you!
C. Y.
Very pleasant place to have dinner.. Love the interior design.. Fascinated by the old roman architecture. The foods was not disappointing, and the staffs was very friendly as well. Overall, I really enjoyed my dinner here..
A. P.
Chain Italian restaurant but does enough to make you happy. Moules Marinara is a great dish and their coffee with olive oil & pistachio cake is divine if you are like me and like only a small portion of 🍰and not much of a sweet tooth. This particular ASK is in a superb building with looming columns, very high ornate ceilings and quite a history behind it. I would highly recommend.
C. R.
Pasta (bolognese) sauce very bland. Never add condiments to my food but had to add heaps of pepper and a couple of twists of salt too. Pizza was good.
H. B.
Friendly helpful staff and lovely food. Made us very welcome on our son's birthday.
M. K.
This is quite an impressive hall. It dates back to the eighteenth century where it was used as an Earls assembly hall.
The waitress was very professional and quickly took our orders. Craft beer was good. The mushroom starter was nice and the calzone was filling and tasty. A couple of the dishes were not available which was annoying. The price is ok especially if you use your Tesco vouchers. I would go back.
J. W.
Check your bill!
Food and service was good until we asked for the bill and told them we had a voucher.
We were in a slight hurry so I never checked it but we were charged for an extra childs meal (we were only 2 adults 1 child so quite a simple bill) so the 10 pound voucher quickly became 3 pounds.
My mistake for not checking but this shouldn't have happened anyway.
Otherwise it was really nice.
J. U. L. D. d. L.
Buy the York Pass and you'll get an special menu in which you can get a pizza or pasta for free. Beverages are not included but my friend and I saved £22 from what otherwise would of been a normal dinner. The Margherita I ate was lacking a bit of flavor on the sauce for my taste, but it was a good value. My friend ordered a different pizza with meat and had more complex flavors. I didn't get the chance to eat the pasta, but I would recommend to try it since they have more variety on pastas.
N. Y.
The most grand and pleasant trattoria ...anywhere -- in this case, York city, near the Minster. An Assembly Hall built in Georgian times. Glamorous, quiet, clean, well staffed. Class.
The food was very imaginative but still traditional Italian. The wines affordable. Coffees and desserts to remember for a long time. I will go back, on every opportunity.
R. F.
It was what I expected food wise. Pizza was overpowered by the fist full of rocket on top. The veg topping I had was scarce therefore only really had a had flavour when I gathered it up to on side of the pizza as tomato base was bland. Tomato based pasta dishes looked better. Fresh lemonade was really refreshing though and the building itself is beautiful though echoed because it was built to host events therefore the lack of sound systems then means the hall needed to carry voices. With the York Pass they hand you a cheaper menu between certain times of the day so if you want a cheaper restaurant option between 3 and 5pm, it's worth considering for families.
F. N.
An amazing venue, being based in the old assembly rooms, as well as good food.
S. B.
Love York and Ask Italian always makes the visit special. The staff are lovely and the atmosphere as romantic as you want it to be. See you again soon X.
D. Y.
Food was good, service slow
M. R.
It was wonderful. Staff were fantastic and very helpful. The food was so good, I ate too much. Oh, and the building is beautiful. Well recommend it to everyone.
s. s.
Food and staff fantastic.
Waiting time before and between service was to long??? Wasn't really busy.
f. f.
Fantastic service everytime.
Always seem to have offers so its worth registering with their website in advance.
Great for light bites or a full dining experience.
The kids are well catered for with their own menu and a little activity pack to keep them entertained.
No hesitation in recommending this beautiful venue.
A. L.
Always amazing food. The building is amazing. Massive pillars and high ceiling, it’s like a huge hall from Hogwarts or something. Very impressive. Staff friendly and efficient for the most part.
A.
food itself was really good compared to other ask Italian restaurants we've been to. only downside was some of the staff. we've been sat now trying to leave for the past half an hour. staff keep acknowledging us and then just going off and forgetting about us. i'd love nothing more at this point than to just pay and leave but it looks like we're in for a long slog
J.
Beautiful building and rooms. Yorks old Assembly Rooms, (dancing in the past). Fabulous to look at. Good staff. Good House wines. Nice looking food but I didnt eat there as I was at a Wake and didn't feel like it. Central and not far too walk from train station. Food looked Italian style.
A. E.
Went here for a staff night out. Wonderful building and the food was great, especially the dessert. One of my eating companions had a slight complaint with his order but the staff were very quick to apologise and rectify this.
R. U.
Nice room and a good implementation of social distancing. Fully booked with eat out to help out when we ate here so essential to book ahead. Nice food and very good service. No rush to return the table which was nice. Would go back
M.
Went early on a Saturday for lunch (11:45am). Wasn't busy but ended up being there for almost 2 hours as service was so slow. Took 25 minutes for order to be taken when seated. Apart from that, the food was lovely and staff were polite.
D. T.
I've always enjoyed coming here and I recently visited for a meal with friends. Service and food were good and it was also an unhurried experience as well
K. D.
Very good food service a bit slow but very busy so understandable
D.
The interior of the restaurant is something else which just adds to the all around warm and welcoming experience.
Cannot beat their pasta selection, always love their menu choices.
We personally would love you to bring back the chicken lasagne ! (Please)
T. E.
Fabulous setting for a romantic meal. Beautiful decor and great ambiance. Good for and quick service as well.
P.
Fantastic place. Fantastic food. Outstanding, attentive & thoughtful staff (all staff, but particularly Amber) & manager (Geet). Thank you so much for a lovely evening for our daughter's special 9th birthday meal! She (& we) were made to feel very special on our first visit there.
S. B.
Its a beautiful setting.
Average food at best.
Because its big its easy to socially distance but staff not wearing masks etc - though trying to keep away
C. R.
We had Tesco vouchers to use, otherwise we would not have visited. Went with my sister and family. York ASK is georgous inside. We had a waitress whose first time was with us, she was very good 😀 Food here I always find expensive for what it is. Disabled ♿ toilet was flooding, no wet floor signs were put down.
P. Q.
Great surroundings, good food, swift service
s. r.
Lovely food, the tiramasu was fantastic.
S. D.
Food OK, service shocking arrived at 5.45pm and took 1 1/2 hours to get our main. The waiter was amazing and compensated us but with children it was stressful the length of time it took. Lovely building and atmosphere in the heart of York.
A. S.
Truly unique setting for a restaurant. Lovely atmosphere with attentive and friendly staff. Would highly recommend the mushrooms al forno starter
G. S.
Gorgeous restaurant!!
The food is really good.
L. F.
Pretty tasty, good sized pizza etc., but if you're used to food fired sourdough pizzas you'll be a tad disapointed. Great location though.
J. N.
Great food and lovely building.
D. B.
Plenty of tables in this lovely building. Service very good. Food very good. Possibly a bit pricey but not overly so. Lovely puddings.
L. M.
Brilliant! lovely fresh ingredients, great food. Friendly staff and the building is beautiful. Service was quick and everyone was helpful and cheery. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
C. B.
Excellent food but an even better venue. Historic building sensitivily fitted out to cater for the masses without feeling like it. Despite being very busy the service was excellent and there was a relaxed feel about this place.
R. J. W.
Wonderful service and atmosphere. Superb vegan options! Confident eating there re. comprehensive measures put in place to minimise Covid risk.
P. G.
This has to be the grandest Ask Italian anywhere. It is situated in the York Assembly Hall. Grand building massive high ceilings and huge columnsline the dining room.
Food was bog standard chain italian food but tasty enough. Service was attentive and fast enough.
All in all no complaint.
J. W.
Everything was great bar two small details. Firstly, the pasta had a bit too much sauce (especially noticeable by the end of the dish). Secondly, the panna cotta was quite small; and the menu described it as 'topped with raspberries' yet it only came with three raspberries arranged at the side. These are really minor complaints and I'm sure the other dishes are perfect, but I cannot give a perfect score.
B. T.
Lunchtime midweek visit
Good table availability for walk-ins
Really good service, friendly staff
Good food
A. B.
Fantastic food. Fantastic service. Fantastic environment. Well priced. A real gem and highly recommended.

Good food but the calzone was the smallest I've ever had, by far. Also it seemed to be looking to close just after 10pm, staff tidying up chairs and mopping up as we were still finishing. Strange for a Saturday?
J.
Fantastic quality food quick service friendly staff will be coming back again
J. w. y. d. D.
Slow service cold coffee felt a bit ignored for it not being that busy .
J. H.
Best ask italian I have ever visited. The food is what you'd expect but the building is absolutely beautiful. Staff are friendly and helpful

Came in on Sunday the 3rd with a large family group (Burr family)
The waitress was amazing I can't rate her enough she was just what was needed !! What a credit to the brand 😁
The food was also amazing (lamb pizza) I would happily eat it over and over again
Good work guys !
J. W.
The place is beautiful & clean, our server was so nice but for us the food was very bland. My minestrone soup was good but the pizza & bruschetta were very bland. This place was recommended by locals & it was very busy.
J. D. V.
Lovely food, friendly staff and great service. Would recommend. Can't wait to return
S. A.
Consistently good food and drink, the staff are invariably non-English and are always very friendly and efficient., despite there being a shortage of them, according to the sign at the door.
T. R.
Excellent food.
Beautiful inside great service.
Would recommend.
W. M.
Lovely surroundings, helpful staff. Lovely pizzas
A. B.
Amazing venue. The atmosphere in here is great with beautiful decor. Definitely a good place to go if you want fancy dining but with Ask prices
P. V.
Always enjoy meals at Ask, love how they bring the kids a starter right away so they're not left waiting; don't know anywhere else that dues that, a very nice touch for parents! Food is always good and the staff are friendly and attentive.
A. G.
Great service, really good location and atmosphere. Food was excellent kids meal fantastic value £6.95 for 3 course really good attention to detail. Reasonably priced.
G. C.
First of all it is a lovely setting in what was previously the Assembly Rooms.Very spacious with huge marble? columns.Menu is typically Italian cafe at reasonable prices.Service was excellent.Would return.
J. P.
I love the venue, a great open space that feels comfortable. The food is usually pretty good (my favourite of the chain restaurants), a little under par yesterday probably owing to the Christmas rush!
M. D.
Ate in a group of 10 people or so.
Venue is wonderful and staff are very good.
I had pizza dough balls for starters which where nice and then risotto for main course. Risotto was very dull, even with added cheese and olive oil. Very very hot in centre and cold at edges as if microwaved tbh.
Pizzas looked really nice, colleague sent fish back as uncooked and this was replaced and not charged for.
No steak on menu which was disappointing, I wont be returning based on my dining experience.
a. b.
Excellent food, excellent service
D. E.
Absolutely stunning building. Very friendly staff and excellent value.for money.
Food was fantastic, served quickly just the right time between starter and main course.
We will definitely be back when we aeebext in York.
M.
Terrific service, going above and beyond. And excellent food. Lovely experience.
R. T.
What a fantastic building this venue is situated in, it really adds value to the already great food.
S. C.
A very grand setting, friendly attentive staff and good Italian food, what is not to like?
A. A.
Lovely place to be , we ordered pizza it was fabulous
P. D.
Beautiful location at the old Assembly Rooms - quite stunning to walk in off the street. It is a while since I've frequented ASK Italian but this was as good as it's ever been anywhere. Food and service both very good.
M.
Warm welcome, staff very polite, friendly and professional. Service and menu was excellent. Food was to the highest quality. Very enjoyable experience.
M. S.
Spectacular building, the setting is really great, enjoyed it. Food wise food but not breath taking. Service at a very good level. Not sure whether it'd be as good during rush hour, it was rather slow when I was there.
D. C.
What a great venue for a restuarant and we used Tesco club card points to purchase our meal. We were offered lemonade on arrival to our table and service and food could not be faulted ,again the venue was stunning
E. B.
Amazing building we'll worth going just to admire the surroundings but the food was great too
Y. R.
Very good food and most affordable. Stunning building xx Staff very friendly xx
C. R.
Good food in historic surroundings. Covid restrictions in place but not to the extent it affected enjoyment. A bonus was the half price of the meal under the government scheme
H. R.
Delicious food and friendly staff
A. C.
The food was good and the building is amazing, so worth going for the atmosphere, but we were left waiting to be seated for a while. It was really busy, so not too bad, but we had booked and were stood for 10 mins or so and nobody approached us to help
C. W.
Fabulous service they were very friendly and the food was excellent and delivered to the table quickly
B. D.
Beautiful building, former assembly rooms. Good menu and reasonable prices. Good for families.
H. W.
Fantastic food in an incredible building. The staff were very welcoming and happy to help. Good portions sizes too!
L. S.
Lovely staff
Amazing food
C. D.
The benefit of a chain like ASK is that you know the food will always be of a certain standard. All food, drinks, and service were great but the particular highlight is getting to enjoy the remarkable surroundings of the assembly rooms while you eat.
S. A.
Fabulous food friendly helpful aservice
P. C.
Excellent food, fast and friendly service, and while on the expensive end it's worth the price. Venue is fantastic; great place for meals out on special occasions.
A. C.
The food is amazing and service very good. I have to only give 3 stars as the state of the ladies toilets was appalling. An overflowing sanitary bin, a dirty floor, broken toilet flush and something disgusting around the outside of the toilet bowl. Ask Italian - clean your loos!!!
t. s.
Gorgeous food.expected the lay out to be a little better its very impresonal and the seating reminded me a little of a school hall just in a grand building.
Pidgeon flying above our heads while we ate as it had managed to get in. Staff were great and food was delish xx
T. D.
Lovely food just the right amount. Was a little on the dry side I had carbonara and could have just done with a little more sauce. Other than that service was good and reasonably priced xx
m. h.
Amazing service, and really good food inside a gorgeous building, worth a visit if you're in york
J. D. a.
The food here was great, the staff were friendly and it's a gorgeous restaurant. What more could you ask for? 😊
N. M.
Beautiful building and good food, great if you 'fancy' a fancy lunch
B. H.
Food is good however the interior gives it a cafeteria like feeling which really lets the beautiful architecture of this building down, the echo of the building makes it impossible to hear the music and the mismatch of furniture made it feel unorganised, cheap and mediocre. Unfortunate
L. W.
The food was dope. Loved the big marble pillars. I'd love to put my privates in a bowl of the risotto. Seriously go there at least twice. What it do, nephew.
J. S.
Was taken here by a friend. The food was second to none. It was amazing. It was really great. My experience of this establishment was wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed myself as did my friend.
A. B.
Love love love this place. Good food but the venue is brilliant. We often take people here to impress them on a reasonable budget
K. J.
Lovely food and excellent service
P. B.
Clamour up the steps of this neo-classical building and wow: an 18th-century assembly room complete with chandeliers. The interior of this restaurant is its obvious distinguishing feature, for the food is exactly the same as every other branch of this chain: good, served alongside good service. So there's very little else to speak of. Walk in, look at the interior. I'm sure you'll want to stay.
K. S.
Beautiful interior, this was the old assembly rooms in York, nice staff and good service, usual Ask menu but plenty of choice and piping hot food
C. B.
Lovely place great atmosphere. Look was delicious
D. V.
Good service, grest food, fabulous setting.
N. W.
Starter was superb (mushroom with garlic and mozzarella) will use ASK again but background music is odd and out of place.
C. H.
Lovely building and very good food will definitly re visit .
y. p.
Excellent food out standing atmosphere food is yummy yummy Staff is very friendly and helpful charming
S. C.
A good place for a meal. Our granddaughter was celebrating her 4th birthday and was presented with a chocolate pizza complete with a candle.
Good service for all the family.
V. A.
Really liked this place. Nice building and was asked on table request of any food intolernces being gluten intolerant I was really impressed I never get asked. Defo a hit from me.
S. S.
lovely food , beautiful surroundings in a nice relaxed atmosphere.👍
j. f.
Been here a few times with my wife ,family and friends.
The food has always been excellent and the service is very good.
I would highly recommend this restaurant.
K.
Lovely food as always and our waitress was really friendly and helpful....the manageress could have done with smiling and looking a little more interested in her job tho! 😕
M. W.
One of the better chains, though the food at this York branch is not quite the best ASK fair. The setting, however, the recently restored eighteenth-century York Assembly Rooms, is superb.
P. K.
Sort of ok ... didn't knock spots of me. ... just ordinary food but in extraordinary venue. 19th Century hall with marble columns. I'd pay to have a coffee there anytime.
b. M.
Absolutely fabulous setting, with great food and service, had our anniversary meal here and couldn't have found anywhere better in York
C. s.
Very friendly staff and great service
D. R.
Lovely meal and restaurant, great service as well thank you.

Love the tastey food the service is excellent very freindly. The York building is an experience beautiful well preserved I love my trips to York just for this meal, menu is changed regularly so always a treat.
S. H.
Fabulous location in York's former Assembly Rooms. Took the grandchildren for lunch. Food and service good.
Prices a bit high but there is usually a deal on.
J. T.
Wonderful 18th century setting for a meal, complete with high chandeliers and Corinthian columns. Typical Italian food at reasonable prices - but watch the price of drinks!
A. M.
Stunning building and sumptuous setting. Food fairly good with a great vegan selection (the vegan chocolate tart is to die for) and very friendly attentive service
M. J.
Lovely staff, great food been every time we go to York.😊
P. G.
Great food, my wife loved her cannelloni and my daughter was full-up, would happily go back. Front step needs a bit of work but beautiful inside
S. F.
Great food and service, combined with amazing architecture, especially the chandeliers and columns.Jeet & the team were fantastic, which added to the experience.
C. S.
We enjoyed a lovely 90th birthday celebration with my Mum... memories of a dance hall in1950s in what is now beautiful restaurant surroundings a menu to suit all tastes and delicious food... attentive staff Jeet and Kumba made it very special
..thank you
P. A.
Great venue and lovely staff but the food was a little plain for my liking. Needed a few more herbs, pepper and parmesan to bring it to life.
H.
A great setting to share some food and drink. Staff were great and provided a quick but not hurried service. Food was good and hearty
M. H.
Brilliant service , accepts Tesco voucher's.

I. Y.
Lovely restaurant with great food and quick service. Not to mention how beautiful the restaurant is!
C. M.
Food was reasonable and so slightly over priced. Very helpful and friendly staff in very grand surroundings which can easily catered for large parties 😊
D. W.
Expensive for what it is good decor but toilets let it down not really choice of beers
A. C.
Absolutely brilliant. Especially as they have a gluten free and dairy free menus.
P.
Great place and fantastic surroundings, staff were great. Food was good.
