Great food, good service in a fun lively setting. Just remember it is cash only or I think they take PayPal at a push. Good wine list and specials plus the usual pizza select, love the way they say no sweet corn pineapple or chicken allowed on the pizzas!

I love this place. It's really small and the food is authentic Italian. The pizza is great (They have one with egg on) and they do really interesting specials sometimes too. I had a pumpkin pasta dish once and it was the best pasta I've ever had. Nice relaxing vibe too.

Not a bad calzone and I've had them globally. Dough was great and nicely fired. Plenty of filling. I'd have liked to see an extra type of cheese and ham in there and maybe spinach to vary the taste and texture but that's subjective. Expansive menu and plenty on the special board.

The pizzas here are sublime, absolutely delicious. My OH had mushroom risotto which she said was amazing too. Great atmosphere, small informal family run place with friendly service. They don’t accept card payments, only cash, PayPal and bank transfer, this is for information only and not a criticism so you can be prepared, prices are very fair. 100% recommend.

If you want Italian food then it's here....or go to Italy 🇮🇹 personally I wanted to try two stereotypical dishes in the lasagne and tiramisu....the result blown away by the ingredients and ample portion size...to go there to see for yourself. We visited last night and instantly felt welcomed into a lovely atmosphere. The food was stunning, the service was amazing and everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The definition of a wonderful family run restaurant, absolutely worth a visit! Will definitely be a staple whenever we are in York. Super friendly family restaurant. Food was very good and house wine was a winner. Can't take prams inside due to small size of restaurant but that's fine as they park it round the back for you and bring it back when ypu leave. They kept our 8month old entertained throughout our meal and kept her laughing. We enjoyed our visit.

Why have we not been before??? We had risotto and carbonara for mains and they were absolutely delicious and so were the starters. The house wine was pretty good and at a decent price. What really made it though were the staff...they were friendly and chatty and seemed genuinely pleased we were there, not like the usual grunts you get in chain restaurants. Great atmosphere in here . Loved the decor . Had garlic tomato bread to start . Way too much tomato and could not taste the garlic . Wife had lasagne asked for parmesan cheese and wasn't put on. Also lasagne cold inside and not much sauce . To say they have a wood fired oven I'm surprised that the dough crust was not puffed up but was flat and crisp but was still a good pizza . Would I return ? No afraid not. There is way too much competition in york and I'm afraid they need to step up the game a little .

Local favourite recommended on a previous visit. Small restaurant but extremely popular - really lucky to have got in as a walk-in so would recommend booking. Big menu with full range of classics and specials - some fantastic seafood dishes on there. Pizzas also available. Gorgeous food, compliments all around. Fantastic tiramisu rounds out the meal. Beer is Peroni and plentiful - free limoncello at the end a nice touch. Service was efficient and quick. One oddity for these days - doesn’t take card. Cash is king (they do also take PayPal), which is fine by me - just useful to know in advance. Location is fantastic. Near lots of busy bars for after dinner drinks. Will definitely return. 😎

Amazing Italian food, everything we got was delicious. Ended up hearing about it from a local that we stopped to talk to randomly. Also referred to as Paolo's by the locals, as that's the chef's name. Place is pretty small and seemingly always busy, so if you have a large group call awhile ahead. Greeted by a very stressed man, who doesn't know how to smile. I ordered the Fillet steak from the Specials board, which came out medium (asked for rare). Didn't feel inclined to complain due to the attitude of the waiter (quite aggressive). I gave this 3 stars due to the atmosphere, but I certainly would not recommend this place to anyone, the food was average at best.

Il Paradiso has some very friendly staff with very quick service. The restaurant it self is uniquely and well decorated giving it a homely feel. Most the food seems to be on two prices ~£9.50 or around £20. I tried a Lamb fillet and pasta special (£19.95, pictured) and it was well worth money. The fillet was very well cooked and a generous portion and the pasta was extremely tasty. Overall a very nice time spent at this eatery.

Fabulous food, superb house red and white wines served by the generously poured glass, warm and welcoming staff,(even the chef comes out to say hi ) and italian football on the tv all combine to make a most enjoyable experience. Amazing little restaurant, me and my partner had our first date here, food was good and well priced, service was great the first time but we had not been back since, we decided to drop back in, unfortunately there were a couple of minor things that let it down slightly, not something that I would Karen over though, table was a little sticky and we had slightly slow service, took a little while to take our order but this is understandable in a busy restaurant, food did not disappoint once again everything was delicious. This is our 2nd favourite Italian and in our top 15 best restaurants in York - we would definitely recommend dropping in if you're staying in York, we prefer the lunch atmosphere over evening but that's not to say we didn't have a great time! Would give 4.5 stars but it won't let me! Rating out of 10 R - 8.5 A - 8

We had a lovely first meal of our holiday here, it is the quintessential Italian restaurant, which can be polarising but J find it charming. It is small and they have made use of all of the space they can, very Italian in its decor and the staff were very polite, though one waiter had a big personality. The food was exquisite though unfortunately we did not take many pictures. We had the meat and cheese sharing board for starter which was absolutely delicious, and for mains my wife had the special autumn pasta, and I had ordered the meat cannelloni. The only downside is instead of the meat cannelloni they brought me the spinach and feta one but in the tomato-y red sauce (amazing btw), it still tasted great and they offered to swap it out but I didn't really mind. 9/10 would eat here again.

My girlfriend and I first visited here on Valentine's day, and have since been back 3 times. Absolutely obsessed with the burrata pizza, with what I would argue is the best marinara sauce in York. I can't get over how good this restaurant is, and I'm quite a harsh critic. The service is incredible, clearly family run and the love of the food and dining experience is crystal clear. The food itself, delicious and at a very reasonable price. The staff are friendly and you feel like family even though you are strangers. I don't think I have had better squid, and I've eaten a lot of the stuff over the world. 10/10 , I never rate this high. BELLISSIMO!

Highly recommend this place. We went there today for lunch (first customers in). The service was great. They catered for my 5 yo daughter's fussy appetite by arranging a special portion of spaghetti & parmezan. We also had a pizza and from specials pappardelle with beef fillet. Excellent food! Looking forward to be back when we are in York next time. One dowside to the place is that they don't accept debit/credit cards. Instead they accept cash or PayPal. The quality of the food and the kindness of the staff however compensated for this inconvenience. Grazie!

The young pig dish is AMAZING, one of the best pork dishes I have ever had. We were served by several different people - one was amazing and super friendly, another seemed put off and annoyed whenever we had a question and just seemed quite annoyed in general, and the last was loud and friendly but forgot about our request for the bill almost immediately despite loud reassurances he would get it for us straight away (we had a train to catch). Would definitely recommend for the food and atmosphere. Minus one star only for service and us not being sure ever what was going on as we were asked the same questions multiple times by different people.

I Was disappointed. Service was poor from one of the waiters. I asked for an arrabiata with prawns and was told no as this was not the done thing in Italy as arrabiata contained meat?!??!?! I explained to the waiter that it does not contain any meat and showed him a recipe online, he still continuously argued back at me, I finally ordered the sea food pasta and it was tasty. I got no apology from the waiter and I was just told not to worry. We also asked for a aperol spritz. What he brought us back was aperol and gin in the same glass 🤨. I think the basic Italian restaurant staples were poor. The other memeber of staff also made a racist remarks about a young gentleman that was sitting outside. The food was good, just the experience let it down.

Oh my days. This is genuinely an amazing find, do not let any preconceptions about the size or deco of the place put you off, you will live to regret it! I have been lucky enough to have dined at some of what I've experienced as the most incredible restaurants, including in Italy, and at first glance you would write this tiny little place off, it's not on a main street, and you'd blink and miss it if you were walking past but it is honestly up there with the absolute best. At 6pm on a weekday evening it was full of diners, always a good sign. We chose garlic bread and bruschetta for starters, my eldest boy is the biggest critique of garlic bread on the planet and declared it the best ever, I'd agree and apply that to the bruschetta too. My 2 kids then had 2 HUGE pizzas and demolished the lot. We adults had 2 pasta dishes from the specials board and at the risk of sounding hysterical again, we both agreed that they were 2 of the best pasta dishes we'd ever had. No exaggeration, just genuinely incredible, honest and authentic food. We also got talking to a lovely man who said he came so frequently on his own that he'd made his way through the menu and he told us all about his favourite dishes and how wonderful the place was and he was not wrong. There's such a lovely vibe about the place, and the staff encapsulate it. They're enthusiastic, attentive, warm, super friendly and genuine. I could've spent the entire night there. Sadly, we couldn't so we finished off with a pistachio semifreddo (i am obsessed with pistachio anything and myself and my youngest boy were in heaven with this desert) and Limoncello and left with the memory of an understated evening that transpired to be a memory we'll reminisce about for many years. Thank you to all the hardworking staff for providing such a perfect meal in York ❤️❤️ we'll spread the word about you far and wide and hope to be back soon! X

The kitchen staff are conversing in Italian. The service is snappy and efficient. The wine is easily drunk and the smells coming from the kitchen are nothing short of heavenly. A friendly Italian waiter smiles at you and puts a pizza on your table. It's crispy at the sides and you can smell wood fired dough and faint notes of citrus from the sauce. This is, to the best of my knowledge, the best Italian restaurant in York. It may well be the best independent restaurant in the city full stop. Paolo, the owner, is mingling among the patrons and laughing and joking. The perfect host. His seafood is fresh and delicate, his pasta is perfectly cooked, his pizza is made in an authentic wood fired oven and what the hell else matters. This is the place to be. I'm already anxious to go again. Just go. You won't regret it.

Friends recommended this restaurant to us when we were up to York visiting and we weren’t disappointed. Simply the best Italian food we have tried, that includes meals we’ve had in Italy. Been coming here for years and my most recent visit didn't disappoint. Ordered off the specials menu, very much meat-based and totally fantastic food. The waiter did get my order wrong but that was due to a language barrier- I still are what they delivered and wasn't disappointed. Was my partner's birthday, told the waiter and we had a delicious chocolate dessert with candle, song and happy birthday written on the plate in chocolate, complimentary! Fabulous staff and laid back atmosphere. Book in advance. We spent £77 on 2 starters, 2 mains ( all off the specials board) and a bottle of wine!

Chose this venue based on positive reviews on BBC good food. They advised that they took cash only, so arrived prepared. Due to children’s dietary requirements, we ordered pasta in red sauce, a 4 cheese pizza and a mushroom risotto. It wasn’t bad, but didn’t exactly bowl me over either. I think maybe it was because the order was quite plain. The desserts were good, the service friendly, but the main reason why I won’t give more than 3 stars is that our seating area was dominated by a group of around 10-15 flies just hovering around above our heads. Extremely off-putting and unpleasant. Would visit again, just to try something else on the menu.

Definitely one of the best pizzas I've eaten outside Italy. This small restaurant serves totally authentic Italian (Sardinian) food and seems to be building a great reputation with the locals. I wish I'd been staying in York longer as every dish on the Pasta specials board sounded incredible. Will definitely be back for more when next in the area.

We walked in at 6:30pm on a Monday without a reservation. We got seated immediately but were told we needed to be finished within 1 hour 15 mins because they had a reservation at that time. 5 stars for seating us. My husband and daughter ordered pizzas. I ordered the risotto all verdure. The pizzas we're good. I wasn't wowed but no complaints. The risotto was terrific. Really delicious. I think you can get reliably good dinner here with some of the entrees being stand-out good. They don't accept credit cards which is really drustrating when you are on travel.

Food is amazing, freshly cooked and well presented. Only a few tables, so would recommend you book in advance, but they will try to accommodate you if you can. Real Italian food served by real Italians. They have to be a family of Italians. They even argue in Italian like only families do. They invite you in and make sure you are happy with your meal. I saw them help several tourists who didn’t understand English or the Italian dishes. They had a couple of picture menus and could translate Japanese in this particular case. The lemon cake was a perfect ending to our meal. But, there were so many great looking desserts, I couldn’t try them all. I had langoustines with pasta. Yummy.

I turned up at 6.00 and got the early bird special which is awesome value. I had the prosciutto and mushroom pizza and a glass of wine for £9.95. The pizza was a delicious wood fired pizza and very authentic Italian style. Great experience.

You know. Just walking by I would never have selected this place. Plastic chairs. Slightly aggressive rock music on the external speakers. But I am so happy we went in. I ate one of the top three Carbonara's I have ever had. Caprese salad was perfect with beautiful cheese. Pizza was great. Service was immediately friendly and you felt like you were at home. While there are plenty of fancier Italian Restaurants in York, I doubt any of them will make you as happy.

Found this by a google search and went along. Absolute gem, people were friendly and obviously italian and the food delicious. We had a pizza, one of the specials pasta ragu and lamb with polenta which was all spot on, the squid starter was exquisite, not the usual calamari you have when squid is on the menu but in a tomato sauce with olives. Only downside is it is cash only and we hadn't seen the sign, thankfully we were able to pay by bank transfer. Place was packed at 6 pm full of locals who by the sounds of it have been going there for years. Would definitely recommend.

After desperately searching for a good Italian place in York (trying all the usual favourites ), this was finally the one that delivered. Excellent, affordable food, adorably nonchalant waiters, a friendly, slightly claustrophobic informality that is complimented by a celebration of the art of dining. Be sure to book well in advance, and don't expect to be the only one in the restaurant. So far I have never seen it being empty.

Been twice and can’t fault any of the food or drinks that I’ve had, pizzas are especially good and will go back again. The place is so small and busy you do have to book in advance otherwise you will not get a table Some people are saying that it’s expensive and that astounds me, mains are around £9 unless you order a special then it’s a little more. They also do offers at lunch time. For a three course meal and a bottle of Prosecco for two it cost us £60 and I’d be amazed if you can find anywhere better for that price.

Such a lovely little gem of a place with authentic Italian food that is unpretentious and good value for money. We had the pizza margherita, the vegetarian risotto and the pasta alla carogna (fusili with a roasted red pepper and cream sauce) and tagliere sardo (Sardinian cured meats) as our entree, coffees, non-alcoholic beverages and topped it all off with gelato. Our bill came up to just under £50. The atmosphere is that of a typical family trattoria with a big telly for when the Serie A is on so avoid if you're coming for a quiet, romantic meal! If you're looking for authentic Italian food, look no further.
