Reviews of La Vecchia Scuola

We came across this lovely restaurant on a day out in York, quite by chance. It had a lovely lunchtime menu and looked so nice from the outside that we thought we’d give it a try. We weren’t disappointed. It’s beautiful inside and we were sat inside a nice warm, snug conservatory. The two waiters who served us were really pleasant and created a warm atmosphere, chatting to all the guests. The food was amazing, I had the salmon linguine and the taste was out of this world! I do love my pasta! Would definitely recommend this restaurant, the surroundings are beautiful, the staff are welcoming and friendly and the food is fabulous. The lunchtime special is well priced and tasted amazing, as well as being beautifully presented. Will definitely be visiting the next time we’re in York

Amazing restaurant set in an old school building. Live piano which makes it an amazing vibe. Service was impeccable, everyone was lovely. Chicken is halal but I opted for the saffron risotto which was delicious. My friend had the sea bass which she enjoyed although it was a little salty

Pleasant restaurant. Although only a 3-star review, I would go back. Some context:
- extremely kind and friendly staff although seemed a little overwhelmed during our visit
- accommodated us for 9 people at lunchtime even though the streets were busy. Appreciated this as other restaurants were too busy to take us prior
- they struggled a little to cope with the demands from customers. The restaurant wasn't full but possibly understaffed on this day
- our food order took a long time to arrive. Whilst we asked for the kids food to come once ready, they didn't arrive until almost an hour after (3 pizzas - the pizzas could really do with an improvement, especially since this is an Italian restaurant)
- my wife and I both ordered the napolitana pasta which was OK but both portions were different. One had a lot more sauce and was a bigger portion. Always good to keep dishes looking the same IMO
- one of the group ordered a pink gin and lemonade but was given a different gin and tonic. It took three attempts to get the right order
- consensus from our group was that the food and service was OK, not great
I would happily increase my rating if the wait time and food quality was improved. My apologies to the restaurant, perhaps we caught you on a bad day, but I have to be honest when writing a review. Hope this helps.

I was hesitant, because I had seen some negative reviews. But our experience was like the many rave reviews I had also seen. What came across was that this is a well-run restaurant. I don't mean efficient (although it was) but I mean that the staff were helpful, friendly, good-humoured. And they enjoyed their work. And this showed in the way they approached it and responded to the clients. The manager, although very busy, was happy to take time to listen to our feedback (not knowing if it was going to be good or bad). It was a special meal, and the restaurant made it extra=special. The pianist taking requests was a nice touch, and some enthusiastic singing from a couple of tables made it a really fin time. I'd recommend the conservatory or a side room if you want it a little quiter. Oh, and the food and wine were very good. Free chilled tap water a nice touch.

Great food, good portions, and very attentive service with a friendly welcome too. Very authentic and a nice dining experience! 🇮🇹

At first I thought this would be a very overpriced restaurant that serves a small amount of food in the plate. HOWEVER, when I tell you this is the best restaurant I have ever been to I mean it. I never leave reviews but this restaurant deserves it. I got a pre-starter (Bruschetta salmon) thinking it will be a tiny portion, I was most definitely wrong. It was the most amazing salmon starter I’ve had. For main I ordered a fillet steak (only steak I like) in medium rare. It was the most juiciest and delicious steak I’ve ever tasted, the potato cake and ham were delicious along with the sauce and all the rest. The vibe was amazing with pleasant music and the venue itself was beautiful inside & out. Me and my boyfriend both got a starter and a main each and had a bottle of wine, the pricing is worth every penny, I walked out with a full & happy tummy. My boyfriend could not have chose a better restaurant for my 22nd birthday. The staff are amazing and friendly (always keep your drink topped up which is never a complaint ;). We will most certainly be coming back!

We enjoyed a lovely dinner for two people. We both opted for a start and main course and were impressed with both dishes. The staff were attentive and joked around whilst still being professional and proficient. Would recommend to others.

York is one of my favourite cities in the UK and this is probably my favourite restaurant there! A 4.5 *
Housed in a beautiful 300 year old building, those walls must have seen a lot! Nowadays, it's a very stylish and classy restaurant but relaxed at the same time. The food is very good, staff are great and the service excellent, all without breaking the bank.
The large conservatory at the back overlooks the garden, and if lucky as we were, may have the visit of an unexpected guest. He/she certainly felt very comfortable there. Perhaps the choice of background music, superb for the place and never too loud, had something to do with it!
Starter of skewer of prawn n chorizo was very good. My main of chicken and mushroom tagliatelle this time is not something I usually have but it was delicious. Too filling perhaps as a late night meal (mine was the last dish of the day. After, the kitchen closed). The lemon panna cotta dessert was great.
In brief, very good food, reasonably priced, in particular the set menus which are very good value for money. Great staff and service

Ate here last night, booked at short notice and were glad to get in as was said to be almost full. Were placed in one of the small rooms either side of the front door. Lovely room but cut off from the main ambience of the restaurant. In a nutshell, food was lovely but service was pretty slow. Staff were polite and superficially friendly but seemed to be very busy. Walk in customers were being turned away being told there was no space, but we could see a number of empty tables so seems like the issue was really with staff levels, either in the kitchen or front of house, or both. Some others in our room had asked to see the dessert menu but eventually gave up. We still had a pleasant time and a lovely meal and would go again however, having read other recent reviews, get the sense the service isn’t consistent currently so needs a little tweaking by management.

A small oasis in one of York's busiest tourist streets. Chique but not over priced. Delicious food with ample choice. Sitting in the conservatory with a view of a beautiful garden brought a lovely respite to a busy day. Friendly staff.
