Just popped our head in here at 9pm off the cuff and although they were busy they had room for us. WOW ! Food was lovely , authentic Italian cuisine and authentic Italian portions, amazing deserts the kids were blown away and we all had a lovely meal . Eat here you won't regret it .

We regularly meet with friends here. There is now a new and varied menu suitable for vegetarians and fussy eaters too. Our meals were as amazing this time as always. I had Spaghetti Mediterranea which was spot on, and the service is great. They undoubtedly do the best tomato garlic bread in York ... and their creamy garlic mushrooms are to die for! The toilets could do with a very thorough clean 🤔 to address limescale build up on the taps, cobwebs and general scruffyness, but other than that the place is 5*

Cosy, traditional Italian restaurant on Gillygate. Had a really nice meal, the pizza was delicious and the tiramisu was divine. Service was relaxed but attentive and the restaurant had a nice lively atmosphere. Would definitely go again

I arrived in York having no clue where to eat so I asked the hotel receptionist who recommended Mamma Mia. What a great choice. Had sea bass and as I was sat next to sweet cabinet I couldn't resist white chocolate profiteroles. Superb meal. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Highly recommend, I will definitely go back next time I'm in York.

Just walked in off the street. Wasn't sure they could fit us in. But they did. Service was good and friendly. Even if they didn't say much. The food was delicious! Absolutely delicious. It may have been early in the night but it was great. The lasagna came bubbling to the table the two Calzones were sat in a pool of tomato sauce that I thought was a waste but it all went! Highly recommended this place to anyone looking for a good reasonably priced Italian in York.

My boyfriend took me for my 30 ~cough cough~ something birthday 😉 I’ve been trying to get to this restaurant for 19yrs & I wasn’t disappointed. The staff were so welcoming & attentive. The restaurant itself was charming & relaxing. The starter: Mozzarella & Roasted Peppers was fresh & tasty. Main: Pappardelle e Petto D'Antara (pasta ribbons & duck) was amazing! Melt in your mouth Duck slices with fresh Pasta 😋 I didn’t order a dessert (though tempted) but the wait staff Serenaded my with ‘Happy Birthday’ & gave me a Giant Profiterole with a Candle & Sparkler with a Shot of Limoncello. Unfortunately it contained Nuts, but I was grateful the Waitress asked & told me. So my boyfriend ate it for me (which looked kinda bad to anyone observing, but anyone who was there that night can read this & know that he wasn’t eating it because he was greedy & paying the bill!) 🤣 But I had the last laugh because I got the 2 complimentary mint chocolates 😝😋 That’s the best evening out I’ve had in so long (thanks to Covid 😡) & the most romantic night with my boyfriend 🥰 Thank you to the staff for a wonderful birthday 🫂

Spaghetti Mediterranean was incredible! 5star. Creamy yet a touch of spice. Pollo Michelangelo came with perfectly cooked and seasoned vegetables. Could not be improved on. Burrata appetizer-perfection! If you like Italian, look no further. To bad we aren’t staying another day.

Recommended as a great place for an authentic Italian. Upon arrival it's very obvious it's a family run business and very friendly indeed. We were sat immediately and service was very good. The wine list is limited but has some great options. However the food while it looks good was on the bland side and of inexpensive quality, it seems over the years its lost that standard that it seems to have gained in reputation which is really sad as it could be great with a little reboot. I would not recommend visiting the toilets or thinking of drinking the Martini Rosso on the optics it's likely been there a few years... Tired and lost in the early naughties is how I would describe it. Please don't get me wrong though once a few glasses of wine have been imbibed and your pizza and pasta arrive it's not a bad place by any stretch of the imagination, coffee is nice and the Tirramasu is pretty good.. (possibly homemade), but it certainly is not improving itself anytime soon. Don't go there expecting or you could leave disappointed.

Small family run Italian restaurant serving good food. Nice atmosphere and friendly service. Lots of room inside despite the small frontage, even a garden at the back. However very limited options for special diets. Only one gluten free option for main and one for dessert (risotto + panna cotta). I'm sure you could do better than this Mamma Mia.

This restaurant is central to York. A good place for the art gallery or the theatre. The staff are excellent. We were a party of 13 and had decided on our menus in advance. Service was therefore quick and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Not my first visit nor will it be my last

We could not find anywhere to eat as we fancied some pizza, and just happened to pop in here on the way back to the car. There were completely accommodating, gave us a table immediately with plenty of time to eat, the staff were excellent and the food was amazing. Went here yesterday teatime after a uni open day. All really enjoyed our meals & service was good, fantastic pizzas & veal escalopes were lovely. As this is an old family run restaurant, it felt like Italy not York! 😊Would definitely eat here again, better than the italian chains.

It's good. Never tried veal before. Figured it would get banned soon so why not. Hoped all the suffering would come through in the taste and have my mind blown. I chanced to be in York for a few days, unplanned, and spotted this independent family Italian restaurant on my way to the guest house. What a lovely place! I was asked if I wanted to sit outside and was taken to a lovely secluded garden seating. I had a glass of house wine - pleasant and a bowl of linguine pescarese, ie with cream sauce and a mixture of squid, prawn and mussels topped with parmesan cheese. It was simple and very tasty, served with a friendly smile and a chat. I will gladly go back there before I leave York.

Perfect Birthday Party venue! We came here for a meal with my daughter and her friends. Beautiful traditional italian food that was so tasty. The pizzas were to die for. Very friendly staff who really went over and above to make sure that my daughter had a good birthday meal. We will be returning soon!

I tried this restaurant with my wife at the weekend and was very pleasantly surprised. Although quite noisy, there was a nice atmosphere, helped by the very kind young man who served our table... The food was slightly above what I would normally pay, but it was of excellent quality nonetheless: the sirloin for me and the lobster ravioli for her. Would recommend! 🇦🇩

This is an authentic Italian Restaurant run by an Italian family from Sardinia. They serve genuine Italian cuisine and unlike the big chains where most of the food is brought in, Mamma Mia's is cooked fresh to order, even the bread is made on site! They have an excellent varied menu with daily specials that will tempt any discerning palate. Prices are cheaper than you would pay elsewhere so definitely value for money compared to other Italian restaurants. Me and my family have dined at Mamma Mia's frequently over the last few years and have had excellent meals on every occasion. I would definitely recommend anyone wanting genuine Italian food to visit Mamma Mia's, you will not be disappointed.

My partner and I liked our first visit that much, we visited it three evenings in a row; being well travelled, I can honestly say that the ambience, service and food were excellent and well worth the money. Moreover, the manager and his family were actually Italian, which leant an air of authenticity. My next visit to York will include a visit, with pleasure, to the Mama Mia. The gents’ lavatory, which although spotless, was tiny but functional. I would recommend to everyone I know.

The food was wonderful -- melone with prociutto and pizza, both top notch. My Diet Coke tasted bad since they pour it at room temperature from a plastic bottle into a glass with just a few ice chunks. The ice flash melted leaving my drink flat and putrid tasting. Also, no red pepper olive oil was available to sprinkle on my pizza. My biggest complaint however is how they were washing the glasses this night. I was sitting next to a table that was located right next to the bar. All the servers were placing the dirty glasses from previous customers on this table -- there must have been 50 dirty glasses containing the dregs of whatever had been poured in them previously. Then I saw the very vocal (but pleasant) Italian woman who was preparing the drinks grab a dirty glass from the table, rinse it out in the sink at the bar, and then dry it with a towel before preparing a cola and vodka drink and sending it off to another customer. Totally unacceptable from a hygienic standpoint. Now I first wrote about this in another review on another site and the restaurant responded to that review by denying this could have occurred, so I'm writing this review to tell them once again (please don't call me a liar) that it really did happen as I say it did. Why would I laud your wonderful food in one breath and then call out substandard hygienic practices in the next? All this said I would return to Mamma Mia for the wonderful food, but would order bottled water and drink directly from the bottle rather than from a glass. But for the sake of others please (1) stop placing all the dirty glasses on a table for all your customers to see -- that's gross in itself but (2) don't let the Italian lady prepare drinks anymore if she's going to (1) serve room temp soft drinks or (2) cut corners on washing glasses the right way.

It was okay. Food served was perfectly acceptable, possibly a little bland, the lobster Ravoli didn't appear to have much lobster in it; served with a reasonable speed, service was of the quiet kind, toilet was a little cramped (gents anyway, didn't check the ladies). I wouldn't particularly recommend, but I wouldn't say "stay away" either.
