Got to spend a day here while waiting on an evening flight back to Scotland.
Staff are welcoming and friendly, great selection of drinks. Always a good pint poured. Good selection of food on offer.
The roast beef dinner is incredible. If I'm ever back in Belfast 100% will be revisiting.

Found Belfast to be a compact city with a super sized heart! Be sure to pop into the Morningstar Pub, tucked away in Pottingers Entry in the former smugglers cove ~where the prices are as honest as the staff. Recommend the 11am to 4:30pm bar buffet plate for a reason able £5.95. Be sure to have Declan the Bar Manager serve you with a warm smile, genuine hospitality and authentic Irish generosity! The Irish coffee is w well worth a try; lovingly made and packs a punch spiked with a bit of Old Parr. Not an ordinary pub for sure as it is rich in history and even a story involving Samuel Clemens, a cathedral restoration and a winged lion above the main entryway. You’ll need to ask Declan about this and about the difference between a red top, white top and blue top Guinness kegs.

This is a must do stop off for lunch or just a drink.
My first visit in about 20 years and it hasn't changed much.
The staff are warm and friendly and the food is great.
A choice of a full menu or eat from the buffet.
On this occasion we ate from the buffet which starts at 12 midday. At £5.95 per person it's hard to beat both in price and quality for city centre luncheon.
Stuffed roast beef for me with champ and cabbage, and steak pie for the other half.
Tasty and just the ticket for lunchtime dining. Highly recommended
S. R.
The service was excellent, and the food was second to none 24 ounce dry aged steak, chips and pepper sauce absolutely gorgeous 5 star's.
M. W.
Great service staff and amazing local Irish food! Our bartender made the experience for sure. I’d highly suggest trying to local Irish Whiskey here @little_lady_big_bites
M. W.
Great meal and great service. We'd their big sexy burgers and cocktails all night. Everyone loved the food, the burgers, the chips and loaded fries hit the spot. Always well looked after every time we come here. Thanks again team!
A. B.
Very surprised by the quality
Prime beef quality
All the food was just amazing as the starters
I highly recommend visit and have dinner here
M. S.
Unbelievable food at great prices along with a fantastic drink menu. Lovely hospitable staff working well together. Spacious inside, well cared for and loved along with outdoor seating. Quite a great visit and look forward to next time.
D. G.
Superb food and drink, top service, great traditional ambience (the pub is pretty old and historic).
Well-worth a visit!

I don't go into Belfast that much but had to go in for work and this is my go to place for lunch for last 30 year's. The buffet lunch is fantastic and recommended for anyone who wants a little bit of a traditional Irish grub. Purchase a plate at a time and a selection of hearty local produce which gives a proper taste of Belfast home cooking. Lots of friendly staff which make the place also standout. I dont know how they manage it but they always seem to have really good people behind the bar here and most importantly pour a perfect Guinness. The bar is usually home to a dedicated band of locals who call in here to have lunch, have a few pints and watch the horse racing aided by a very good bookies next door. Was in just after 12 and did notice how there were a few elderly gentlemen came in who the staff seemed to recognise as regulars. The way they were greeted and shown respect and kindness by the staff is a lesson many a bar could learn in hospitality.

Tastiest food I’ve ever eaten. I couldn’t be happier. Plus, the vibe and staff were so lovely! PS this is the first time I’ve ever reviewed anywhere because it was SO AMAZING

This restaurant is like going into a movie with no expectations and being absolutely blown away. This happens once every couple years and this food is now In my top 3 favorite restaurants of all time. Do yourself a favor and go here if you're ever in Belfast.
M. H.
Four of us had Sunday dinner here & the food & staff were amazing. Lovely roast dinner which went down a treat. A must visit if your love good food.
B. D.
My favourite in Belfast, hands down. Fantastic, great pub with a dining area upstairs. All looks like preserved in time down to staff uniforms. Staff: excellent, experienced, well trained, pleasure to interact.
Food - if you're into prized steaks, oysters and langoustines (plus selection of pub classics), this is the place. Never disappoints, 10/10.
K. W.
Lovely wee pub. Great place to go on a summers day, can sit outside and have your drinks. Food is super, and a bit of music to top it off!!
K. M.
Lovely food and excellent pub. Service was quite slow, perhaps needs improved supervision. Kirsty seems like a suitable candidate to do this
B. K.
Great old world pub with absolutely amazing and tasty food! Racing plays on screens, pints are poured quickly and they use their own butcher for the meats which is why you can taste the difference! Highly recommend the bangers and mash, you won’t go wrong!
J.
Nice wee pub , particularly before coronavirus hit of course. Had a fish supper & a few very good Guinness recently. Nice friendly service , though small portions , was still hungry! Nice atmosphere on a saturday afternoon, good clientele.
G. M.
Food wasn't the best over cooked chicken but the Guinness was lovely
T. J.
Enjoyed a lovely meal 15/10/20. Was part of a 2-4-1 deal on main courses. Great value. Super friendly waiting staff who were enthusiastic and chatty. If your after good steak this is the place, with a good selection of cuts.
G. L.
Food was amazing in this pub. We had the Morningstar, Pork Chop and Pudding. Pudding was exceptional. Service wasn't the greatest, we were rushed as they were close to closing.
L. M.
The food is delicious, from Sunday lunch, street food to the Best steaks in Belfast. Tom a hawk's, 30oz to 6oz etc. I love the laid feel of the Morning star & the staff are so lovely.
G. B.
Was in after 3pm had a beautiful meal with a friend cannot fault it at all staff on the go all the time tables cleared never cluttered. Moved from table to another after 4hrs to as just having drinks. Nothing was a problem for staff very attentive very welcoming. Was very busy as Christmas parties were coming and going but never had problem with service. Will be back again and Highly recommend no matter what size ur party table needs 5 stars all the way. Thank you Hope you all have a lovely Christmas yous deserve the rest 🙂🙂🙂🎄☃️
J. W.
I've been going here for 20 years now and I've never had a bad meal and the pints are lovely
Z. L.
Love this place, the meat is sooo good! If you want to enjoy a real meat 🥩 locally made that's the best place to go! Without any doubt it is the best meat restaurant in the city centre.
B. M.
Guinness was great and if your up for a steak challenge with mates then this is the place
D. V.
Nice staff, great beer.
Will definitely come back, the next time I'm in Belfast.
L. G.
Food was absolutely FANTASTIC! Best seafood chowder I have ever eaten. And the toffee sticky pudding was to die for…
A. B.
Fantastic food. You can eat upstairs in restaurant or down in the bar!
A. M.
Brilliant food, drinks, staff and atmosphere only down side is we've been twice for lunch now and its always freezing (the room not the food lol) won't stop us going back though!
M. J. M.
Went here on the 21/12/2021 just after 2 pm and unfortunately the meals were to say the least poor the battered fish was undercooked and the chips were reheated by the looks of them. After complaining to the staff they offered to take one of the meals of the bill and a free drink.
Across-the-board over priced for what you receive
P. C.
Popped in for a drink and great little pub and great service. Beautiful pint of Guinness and service to table made the experience. Nice booths and plenty of places to sit and good selection of food even 48oz steak if you fancy the challenge. Well worth a visit
L. W.
Lovely little find very friendly staff. Food a little expensive but taste amazing. You can sit inside or outside. Children are welcome but not at the bar.
K. M.
This was by far the best stew I've ever had. Don't get me wrong but I LOVE STEW and get really excited when my wife proclaims that she is going to make some. However The Morning Star has their own farm so all the ingredients are home grown and amazing. If your in Belfast and looking for a nice atmosphere with amazing food then look no further!
S. g.
Cracking place. The subtle touches this place has to offer sets it out from the rest.
The fish was very light and definitely fresh.
Would loved to have tried the 48oz Steak Challenge but I was just in for a light lunch.
The staff are excellent and very accommodating.
I'm glad I stumbled upon this little gem.
R. F.
Ribeye steak was very fatty (more than normal) and overpriced. Friends had the rump which were good and excellent value for money
I. C.
The food was very tasty 🤤 and the wine was very strong for myself 😂 My boyfriend had the best burger in Belfast. Good Covid regulations in place.
P. E.
The most amazing meal I’ve had since I got to the UK. Friendly staff, definitely recommend.
V. K.
Had lunch here last Friday with some friends. Food good, service fine, staff great, have eaten here before, would happily recommend . Victor
r.
Food was delicious, only sorry I didn't order of the regular menu instead of the mothers day special ,
g.
Disappointed with food yesterday .was told that they were serving fresh cut chips only to get frozen fries.manager doesn't seem to know the difference.staff were friendly and the rest of food great but please get your chips sorted and tell customers the truth
W. M.
Loved it,, there was 18 of us and no problem found us a great spot to round off a special day.
L. C.
Great atmosphere and very lively. Unfortunately the food was not good. Had to send it back. Staff lovely and dealt with complaint really well. Still would go back but maybe not to eat. Perhaps the buffet would have been a better choice.
J. o.
200 yrs of existence? Your local trip. Local aren’t glad that we fond this jewel. Hahaha! Steaks and beer! 5£ bar chow.local fave. The steaks are fantastic! Staff are helpful!
We dig for this 1.5kg steak shared by four. We under estimate the size of it! Hahhha!!
D. G.
ribeye had amazing flavour and seasoned perfectly. always a great steak from the morning star.
C. G.
Great pub in a busy part of the city. Staff buzz around constantly clearing, taking orders and delivering food. Very professional and pleasant.
Drink selection is good and the Sunday dinner was delicious.
Covid regulations were well adhered to.
The place has a lovely classical pub charm and is a great place to sit down and refuel.
You can expect it to be pretty busy whenever you go, there is limited seating outside but plenty inside.
J. G.
Great steaks. Recommend the 48oz, very tasty. Pepper sauce should be mandatory though. Edit-Went again for my birthday in January 19. Was disappointed with the 32oz steak I got being very misshapen resulting in it being burnt on the outside and raw on the inside. Will have to find somewhere new now : (
C.
Great food and drink, good vibe

Went to morning star on Sunday 5th December 2021 with my sister niece and great niece (only 18 months). The staff, in particular Owen, wer all amazing. The place was buzzing, very busy. The food was as always delishous. The service, in such a busy environment, with particular attention to us with a child was next to none. Even put the pushchair in store for us. Had been a while since I had visited the morning star. Always a favourite but I intend to return soon. Such a great place and staff and food 100%. Could not recommend this place high enough.
N.
Unexpectedly great food from a traditional style pub. Friendly staff and quick service. Plenty of nice beers on draught too.
w. j.
Nice and pleasant atmosphere, food very good especially pan fried salmon, staff were very nice and helpful, would recommend.
J. D.
Have to say one of the best steaks I have ever had, great Belfast bar. I may have tipped the girls with coins that might be out of print. Please get back to me so I can put it right.
A. M.
An underrated pub with a real buzz, food interesting and varied and always available. Great staff, friendly, hard-working and helpful. We really enjoyed our visit recently. A very professional set-up. Thanks again. Andy
M. M.
Went there today with my youngest daughter for lunch. The mussels were sublime and my daughter's Southern Fried Chicken was perfect. Highly recommend this for a nice pleasant lunch. Waitress was excellent.
C. V.
Slightly old fashioned steak house. Do not be put off by the 80s decore. The steaks are done exactly how you want. And taste great. Good gin and craft beer, and for tourist this is how a Guinness is done. I just wish it had updated itself slightly
I. K.
Great food and atmosphere. Highly recommend.
A. “.
Great menu and staff very nice. Handy to pop in for lunch or dinner if shopping in city centre.
n. r.
Lovely little place. Food was amazing. I had the bookmakers open sandwich. I have no idea what was going on there but oh my god it was beautiful. Open steak sandwich on this strange tomato bread with about 1000 different types of onion on it. Should have gotten steak medium instead of well done but that's my bad. Hubby got chowder and he said it was one of the nicest he's ever had. Had to ask for butter for the bread that came with the chowder and then had to ask for salt and pepper but sure now I'm just not picking.
S. C.
Great service and good food, pretty small portions for the price though.
P. M.
Sensational! If your in Belfast and want a perfectly cooked steak then look no further!
j. l.
Love this bar , food fantastic , atmosphere great . Great people , loads off laughs xx
F. M.
Great bar, great food, beer, service, highly recommended, only comment, web site stating closed on sundays,
R. B.
Fabulous service and a meal for 5 of my family. Excellent experience. 😎 🍀 🆗
K. N. (.
super food, slow service in the upstairs section which only had one waiter (although there were only 3 tables of the 20 or so occupied, it was quite difficult to get his attention!). would come back again to try their steaks and burgers!
M. M.
Great food, lovely friendly staff
I'll be back
B. B.
Genuine Irish pub with good food for good value.
J. D.
Great staff, great stout, great food with provinence. Congratulations. Will be back.
D. H.
What a pub should be, no fancy stuff, just beer and good food in a nice pub feel
J. M.
Belting fillet steak, wonderful food in a pub setting
G. 1.
Went there under the arrangement of a tour group. Food are unique and tasty.
R. M.
Had a lovely dinner from the buffet. Hot and tasty. Great service from Owen!
J. M.
Great atmosphere good food and cold beer highly recommend.
E. T.
Lovely food nice atmosphere and friendly staff reasonably priced
V. M.
Beautiful but HOT inside!
A. H.
Irish Lamb stew. Avoid. Basically a green celery onion broth with added carrots and lamb. Dollop of mashed potato in centre with (nice) wheaten bread sticking in top. Certainly not an "Irish stew'.
Shame. Getting that was why I chose this nice pub.
D. C.
They love to serve their dry aged steaks. Great prices and very friendly staff. If you are in the mood for local beef this is a great spot.
D. “. &. B. K. K.
Good place to eat my friends order a
Ulster roast beef is fantastic
The TomanHawk steak warning this is a huge piece of meet Oyster
C. R.
Shabby inside but who cares the staff were very warm and the food was amazing!
I usually take the pic before I start but got a bit carried away!!
L. H.
This pub is a hidden gem. Staff are attentive, great selection of beers, plenty of indoor seating plus a great outdoor seating area with cover for the inevitable rain. Prices are reasonable, no worse than any other pub in Belfast.
E. D.
Great bar, great food and great vibe. My wine wasn't the coldest so good looking bald bar guy (his words) got me another from bottle at back of fridge. Sorted! And best roast beef dinner in ages. Altogether a great bar 😁
J. H.
Good selection of food, lovely pint of guinness, due to current restrictions, indoor seating only available if purchasing food. Had the fish and chips, very nice.
R. T.
The best steak in Belfast! No dout! Staff super friendly
E. D.
Lovely spot for a few drinks and some food in the middle of the city. Great value, particularly in light of it's central location. Staff are friendly and hard working.
C. F.
Nice staff, food was good too. Stopped in on the off chance and it paid off.
G. M.
Spent a Saturday evening here with a few friends, all got seated. Waitresses were excellent. They even had GF beer which was a pleasant surprise.
D. C.
Pub in the heart of Belfast. Rich history, friendly staff and great food & drinks. We went with our tour group and were treated very nicely.
L. M.
Best pub meal I’ve ever eaten. Anywhere.

If you go there, please order the Burger...it's absolutely incredible
M. G.
Delicious food, great service. Steak was excellent!
C. C.
First time at Morning Star but it was a, firm fav of my mums back in the 70s.
We sat outside. Server arrived swiftly. I decided to try the Belfast fries which I have to say we're delish. My daughter had the chicken burger which looked amazing and indeed tasted as good as it looked. Servers were really friendly and took the time to chat and joke. Alot of things I'd like to try from the menu so I'll def be back.
S. W.
Beautifully prepared and plated food. The beef and Guinness our was amazing every bite.
N. M.
Great pint of Guinness, good food & friendly service. Don't think the decor has changed since I was a kid (in the 80s) but don't let that put you off. Recommend.
j. b.
Came on a Wednesday night at 9pm......and it was empty. And I mean we were the only people?!?! Not sure why. Had 1 drink and left. Can't say we didn't get served quickly and got a seat🤣
D. G.
Took my girlfriend here for an anniversary lunch and I have to say, everything was amazing, from the atmosphere, to the customer service and especially the food which was outstanding, they make great burgers! Prices aren’t bad either and the guy at the bar was a legend, will definitely be coming back soon!
D. R.
Lovely atmosphere inside, but extremely slow service. Waited nearly half an hour for a round of drinks. Three staff members came up to ask if we'd been served, including the one who originally took our order.
S. D.
Great pub, clean and well staffed, fast service and the food was delicious
C. H.
I strongly recommend their 'Fruit Pavlova' because it was the best dessert I have had in years. I tried one of their cocktails and really liked it. The only drawback was that some of the drinks and the dishes that we ordered could not be fulfilled because they didn't have them on the day.
M. R.
Mixed feelings about the place. Food was good. Some staff very good but two members of staff let the rest down. Both forgot orders. One wasn't pleasant with an elderly woman.
D. H.
Staff are fab. Food was good. Muscles were excellent but fish and chips were ok
S. N.
Very friendly staff food excellent very clean manager was very helpful with places to visit will definitely come back on next visit to Belfast
M. W.
Great staff great steak over all great place , it has to be a gem in Belfast
M. G.
What more can you say about the morning star great food STEAKS TO DIE FOR EVERYONE MUST TRY AT LEAST ONCE IN THERE LIFETIME and SECONDLY excellent staff
E. C.
Cosy little area down Pottingers entry. The food is homely, traditional, sourced from local suppliers, delicious. The staff were attentive too. Overall, love recommending to family.
C. D.
Delicious steak and chips served. Friendly staff too. Will be back
M.
Thursday afternoon visit, Slow but friendly service. No running water at the sinks in the male toilets. I expected better but will no doubt be back.
B. R.
Excellent food, friendly staff and right in the center of Belfast shopping area.
S. F.
Food is amazing!
check your bill before payment ( I was charged twice for the same meal then called a liar when I queried it.)
I eventually got most of my over payment back and left. The tall skinny foreign lady (blonde hair) tried to blame the young lad for the mistake, not happy about that, the manager had to step in and sort it out after I made several complaints and my missus approached him.
Apart from this and just for the food we will return.
M.
Called in on Saturday for lunch and a pint for the first time in years. The food, drink and service is as good as I remember and definitely won't be leaving as long until the next visit. The carvery is delicious and a bargain at £5.95 and the Guinness is top notch.A proper bar...and highly recommended!!
M. P.
Good pint. Colleagues enjoyed carvery
M. S.
Was slightly disappointed as heard good things about their grub. Maybe impacted by rugby crowd and menu, but beef and Guinness pie slightly dry , nearly too much dense beef and not enough flavour. However it wasn't over priced and luckily we had a quiet corner. The crumbles ordered were good. It's okay, perhaps my expectations have affected the star rating.
A. M.
Great food and friendly staff. Service was wonderful. Would recommend it.
F. Q.
Had wings as starter and Steak for mains. Wings were very poor - more breadcrumbs than chicken. Steak was average.
c.
Great lunchtime buffet, friendly and helpful staff. Old world charm atmosphere
E. B.
Great bar, great food, great atmosphere
S. A.
Handsome old pub, excellent haddock & chips, good service.
C. C.
Fantastic staff. So friendly and helpful. We had a Gluten free person in our group so we really appreciated that. Delicious food and a great selection of beer. Vintage design interior. Can't ask for more.
c. m.
Food was really nice very difficult to give a hood opinion as menu was reduced due to covid. Staff were excellent and really looked after out party of 6
A. C.
Very nice experience. Great location and people. It's a good pub where yiu can taste good beers or eat some traditional food.
In the city center close to the mall, I would like to suggest you to have a break in this Ireland pub.
Very good the Guinness pie !!
c. s.
Very good atmosphere and great food
S. P.
Lovely efficient staff great food and service
M. A.
Oh God that pork loin was the best plate I've ever eaten! Went by this place a couple of times, but decided to try it this time with a company of 4. We had the roast, morning star burger, chicken supreme, pork loin, and a couple of sides. Caitlin was super helpful and attentive. Everyone enjoyed their dishes but the pork loin was the best of all!
A. T.
I love this pub.
Hearty food, decent beer good mix of people.
Decent bar staff - case in point - my wife and I were looking for somewhere to have a drink near closing time ..walked in, it was really quiet, I asked the bar man if he was still open .. said he was about to close up.. but not to worry.. served us (recommended an awesome gin) and stayed open until we had finished..great bar, a hidden gem
P. M.
I enjoyed the buffet very much with my friend.
F. M.
Good service, a little dark. Ladies needs a re vamp
m. y.
We went on Sunday Evening for some food, nothing is a bother to the staff very accomodating. The young lady who served was lovely she was very friendly and took the time to have a chat and make us feel very welcome. Didn't have to wait too long on our dinner and when it arrived it didn't disappoint everyone enjoyed their meal. I always recommend the morning star to friends and family and will continue to do so in the future,it never lets us down. Well done to all the staff 👍
A. O.
Stumbled across this pub during the dinner hunt and couldn't have been happier to do so. We had the Haddock and Guinness pie which was delicious! (30 with two soft drinks). Also, the bar staff were very well presented
S. D.
Comfortable pub with a welcoming atmosphere. Food was excellent and reasonably priced, with very helpful staff
C. H.
Love it here great Belfast bar.
A. S.
A busy gastropub with a limited but good quality menu. Service was quick and efficient. TVs showing horseracing from different courses were on the walls and people were going to the bookies next door then coming back to watch the race. Good if you are are horseracing fan.
T. B.
Nice place with cosy interior and great for a pint.. staff were friendly.
Visited with my companion today and we had lunch, starters were tasty.. for mains she ordered salmon and i ordered the pottinger burger.. the salmon was nice with great presentation but slightly cold.. the burger was not good though, taste wise okay but presentation wise, it looked like the kitchen porter was told to plate it.. it was cold and chips with it were just horrible.. I am just puzzled why so many pubs and restraunts cannot present a decent burger and chip in a proper way and give decent size and portions.. people pay lots of money to eat out and the very least is that the food is hot and is something that you feel is your moneys worth... getting pub staples right should be top of any chefs list so to give an establishment a good rep, unfortunately many fall down on these staples.. lovely place but the standard of burger I got today was not good enough and it was cold..
K. K.
On my one visit I was served by 3 waiters. Only the last one appeared to be nice (a young girl with glasses), others seemed to be bored and unkind. My friends told me not to go there cause I wouldn't get any nice food. And they were right. The inside of the restaurant is nice though.
D. C.
Always great food n a smashing pint of Guinness
S. G.
Super address, in a mid week. The pub is well decorated and there is a good atmosphere. The crew was nice. We were three. We have drunk and eaten, and it was perfect. A thumb up for the chicken suprem, it was very good, may be a little bit more of the succulent spinaches would be better.
F. A.
Traditional bristo pub, with an excellent menu, and great service, located in the heart of Belfast.
G. D.
Great traditional pub that serves local and foreign craft beers. Food looks great and always send to get a turn from both locals and tourists. Horse racing takes priority on the TVs which is ideal if you fancy a punt. The only con I believe is some of the craft beers are a little pricey.
D. G.
Roast beef dinner and pie were enjoyed by all. I have upgraded the stars sorry for any confusion
Note to owner: you asked me to send you more details by email but you didn't give your email address.
L. S.
We found them very friendly and helpfull
P. S.
Great place to visit. Staff very welcoming. The owners always love to see me.
K. F.
This was booked on the strength of an online recommendation and did not disappoint. Clean comfortable great Guinness and delicious food. As it was close to Australia Day we dined on kangaroo instead of the intended Irish stew. Don't hesitate!
C. K.
Absolutely fab cocktails ..... Food fiercely over priced for what was served ..... £2.95 for the smallest portion of pepper sauce that I've ever seen ! Staff were rude and very hard to get hold of considering it was table service only!
R. M.
Cracking tradional Belfast bar. Great admosphere and popular for food and although we didn't eat the food looked appetising and good portions.
L. L. D.
Had a wonderful chat with the barman and he recommended some great Irish whiskies! Such a nice friendly experience
J. M.
An olde worlde institution in the heart of Belfast. Have never been disappointed when going for a meal here. The steaks (up to 42oz) are ready and cooked exactly the way you like them. So, another belt-tightening day was had. Just can't wait for the next
J. J.
Absolutely fabulous. The best meal we had in Belfast the whole weekend. Very reasonably priced with super helpful staff that couldn't do enough for us. The food was second to none. Thoroughly recommend!!!
R. R.
What a fantastic place! Just landed at the airport and taxi driver said Morning Star does the best steak 🥩 anywhere. He wasn't wrong. If you visit Belfast this place is a must visit for the food and service
R. L.
Love the manageress front of house. Such a wonderful time each and every visit. We love going here weather it's post Sunday shopping, for their Fred Flinstone steaks or after our wedding for rounds of whiskey!!!
V. A.
Reading other reviews it’s difficult to believe we are all talking about the same place. Belfast on a busy Saturday night in the middle of the Gay Pride festival . Everywhere was rammed and we wandered the streets looking for somewhere to eat. Stumbled across the Morning Star and went upstairs to the dining area. Staff were very helpful and food was delicious (amongst best we have had anywhere !!) . Had a wonderful meal and enjoyable evening 👍
O. L.
This place comes up first when you looking for oysters and Guinness to try for the first time, but we were told by the waitress that they do not serve them anymore. So I ordered Guinness pie and it was just a bland and tasteless. Veggies probably have spent most of the day under heat lamp. But the location and pint of Guinness was great.
C. O.
Great Food, a good selection of drinks. Outdoor tables are a bit hit and miss - wobbly, difficult to use etc.
M. H.
We stopped by for a small evening snack, and decided on Morning Star Burgers. The result was an amazing burger, that went to my top three three list. Top quality food, and a great variety of beers.
R. S.
Amazing traditional Irish pub with fantastic home made and warming gastro food and lovely friendly service. Great to find hidden gems like this rather than the 'high end' chains.
Can't wait to come back!
R. A. M.
Despite the great reviews we had seen for the Morning Star we were rather underwhelmed. The staff were very pleasant, but on a Friday night there were only a couple of other tables occupied. The food was definitely below par. Not really bad, but very mediocre. Certainly not of a standard to make us want to return. All in all, food wise, disappointing.
P. A.
I think that was the best burger I EVER had. It was very busy at the moment but my order didn't take too long and the quality of their products is really, really good. They also have nice draught beers. I strongly recommend this place, it definitely worths the money.
R. O.
Had a pub lunch with my family visiting from Australia. A perfect atmospheric pub if you want a proper Belfast experience. Highly recommend the Guiness pie with a pint of Guinness.
It wasn't five stars as we had to go upstairs because we had a pram, even though the bar was relatively empty.

1st visit to this bar wasn't sure if they carried the larger I wanted ? So as one would do I entered the premises and before I could ask was instructed to go outside and wait for staff to serve me. Imagine waiting for 10 minutes and not having what u wanted.😵. No manners.
C. S.
Great beer great staff just everything about the bar super.
D. D.
Really old fashioned pub/restaurant we just had a few drinks. A little bit pricey but a good atmosphere
J. K.
I was in Belfast for 3 nights and ended up in this pub every night. Not overcrowded with excellent food. Very welcoming pub with all my favorite traditional food and of course cold drinks. Great staff, a must go to place in Belfast.
J.
Very good food! Absolutely love the Sticky Pork Belly. It's not too dry and complements well with the leek mesh and mash potato sides. The mash potato was creamy and smooth and the pork belly just melts in your mouth with that bit of crispness from the skin.
D. Y.
Fantastic place ,the food is amazing ,well worth a visit, staff really friendly.
R. H.
Decent drink selection in this traditional bar and gastro pub. friendly staff and aparently great food but I'm yet to sample that one out, They do have awards for the food. It's a little bit hidden down joys entry but worth a visit and popular with locals.
D. M.
I enjoyed a lunch in the Morning Star. I had Chicken Caeser Salad it was ok just basic my friend had chicken gougons in batter which were huge. We had soft drinks and I had a coffee it came to £36 . There is a carvery downstairs which looks really good, you can only go up once so the advice was pile your plate up! Might try it next time. Staff were very friendly and helpful
D. S.
Second time at the Morning Star.... if you want something great to eat, made from local produce, eat here!!! If you can plan ahead and fancy a ‘tomahawk steak’ give ‘em a call. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. (Other steaks available)
B. B.
Never judge a book by its cover - the charming bar down a hidden ally way offers some of the best food you will come across in Belfast. Don't be fooled by the casual bar atmosphere the menu is small but adequate, the food is excellent and great service.
P. M.
Great food and really friendly staff, we had a great meal here and would defiantly go back and reccomed to others. Although I would say go upstairs to the restaurant, there is quite a few drinkers in the downstairs bar and their loud language is quite colourful to say the least. It wouldn't be for the easy offended down stairs
j. s.
Another great bar in Belfast, nice decor great value for food and drink.
f. y.
Used to be great.
But increased beer n food prices just make it average.
Food is good quality
But at near £5 a pint in Belfast. Over the top on price.
S. J. W.
Food and Drink simply out of this world! A True hidden gem and one of Belfast's oldest establishments! Atmosphere always vibrant and friendly and a must if you ever come to Visit!
D. H.
Probably the best pub food in Belfast. I recommend their roast beef dinner! Spent many a happy evening, and sometimes afternoon, here. Historical setting is just a bonus for this place. Amazing staff who are always very professional and chatty.
t.
£6.95 for the lunch time carvery plate. It's nothing fancy but honestly, every single dish, pie and side available among a good variety is tasty, well cooked and although stacking is frowned upon, and plates aren't huge, you can get a really good feed for a decent price.
A. S.
Absolutely amazing!! Lush food..excellent service..reasonable prices...an absolute gem!!
P. N.
Me and hubby went here by recommendation on Saturday , I ordered the salmon the presentation was fab, as I l tucked into my salmon it was undercooked and I sent it back i was refunded. I didn't want another dinner sadly put off. A bit disappointed as this was a birthday treat although my hubby Guinness steak pie was delicious.Iwas Just unfortunate.
J. M.
Have always loved this wee bar for food and drink. The steaks and burgers are lovely and they do nice beer too. Unfortunately the last time I was in the bar staff weren't very polite and basically seemed they they didn't want to be there.
A.
Normally when we visit here its great- the buffet lunch is delicious and staff are fab. However on this occasion was very disappointed. Had wanted the pie for lunch and was told a new batch was coming by the girl in charge of the buffet. After waiting a half hour there was still no sign so actually had to get a refund. The girl was not helpful and made it obvious she didnt really care. Not great!
J. S.
This is one of the best bars in Belfast. Great atmosphere, great variety of beers and great options for food. Bookies next door, what more could you want!
B. O.
Nice pub,but the Guinness was expensive, and a bad pint ,3 out of 10 for the pint.
S. T.
Outside walk upstairs to restaurant. Food standard has went downhill when i was there 2 weeks ago it was not good. Maybe they have a new chef. Chips tasted like they had been fried in reused cooking oil. Girl on other table didnt eat her beef burger. My food was tastless. What happneded. Waitress was young and inexperienced with no customer service skills.
J. P.
Authentic Irish food and the standard beer brands. Also a butcher shop, offering locally raised meat. Casual atmosphere. Hidden location. Bar downstairs is mostly locals. The restaurant upstairs is largely tourists. A particular barman was particularly helpful, but a particular waitress was particularly not.
M. C.
Great ambience, friendly staff and amazing food a quintessential Irish pub with great pub grub!
S. E.
Came over for the cardiff devils double header unfortunately it's our last day today. Had to pop in here for a cheeky pint as the staff are so friendly and the atmosphere is very welcoming. Well worth a visit if your ever in Belfast. You can also have a cheeky bet on the horses as well
P. Ó. C.
A magnificent 19th century pub with decor to match. Right in the middle of the city, great location. There is hot food in the bain-maree in the bar until 5:00pm, then order of the main menu from the kitchen, so food all day basically. I have to give an extra star for the traditional dress of the bar staff. It's extremely nice to see white shirts and black bow ties again, the way it used to be years ago. Makes things look more professional.
G. T.
Great place, staff are very friendly and the service is excellent outdoor, inside is a different story, poor service and wait time is crazy.
A. P.
The waitress who served us was lovely. The food was good although not a great deal for vegetarians. The place was full up and we were lucky to get seats.
S. K.
Excellent food and decent price.
D. C.
Very pleasant staff, lovely food, good beer and reasonably priced. Will have no hesitation in visiting again when back in Belfast.
A. M.
Busy Christmas night but quickly got a table for 3. Super prompt and friendly service and great food & drinks. Haven’t been for a while before this but will definitely be back before too long. Great atmosphere, you won’t be disappointed.
P. B. (.
Great food, excellent wine but expensive, hence 4 stars.
P. R.
Bemused by people saying the place looks dated. It is how bars used to look. What do people want?
The food was delicious. A plate of oysters for under £10 washed down with a beautiful Guinness.
J. M.
Met old friends and had a very enjoyable afternoon in the atmosphere of a real pub.
i. v.
Great Sirloin steak with soft meat. Big choice of local Irish food. Perfect staff, specially the young guy with a small ponytail..
A. M.
Just down a quaint alley way off the main square in City Center of Belfast, this lil gem has great atmosphere, wonderful waiters, and briliant food. The Guinness is the tallest glass on the table and is as delicious as expected. Worth the walk into town or grab a taxi. So much fun!
D. Z.
A wide range of traditional meals available at a historic location. Nice setting, adequate prices. Service might have been better though.
E. M.
Great food and service staff were lovely and very helpful.
S. F.
Could not believe how food the good was here. Great little bar with plenty of history.
G. H.
A lovely old bar. They do a great lunch time buffet. A great selection of beers, wines and spirits and a really good restaurant upstairs. Beside a bookie too if you fancy a flutter
T.
Very good food and fair prices.
S. V.
Amazing steaks! Sides a bit pricey tho for what they are. But great pub.
h.
Best pub meal ever
A. G.
We had dinner at the Morning Star. Pork belly and Irish steak and Guinness pie. Cheap and tasty pub grub and we were very happy, but it lacks a little ambience.
C. M.
Service great, lots of tables to sit and socialise. Lovely atmosphere
N. O.
Nice location and friendly staff. Good place for a pit stop beer.
J. B.
Wow Delicious! Enjoyed creatively presented and fresh lamb and beef specials. Staff were super friendly and the atmosphere was fun. Highly recommend.
J. W.
Call ahead, order the tomahawk (for 2), leave a happy person.
J. R.
Excellent food and very nice place. Unfortunately, antipathetic waitress.
Moreover, after I forgot my medicine on the table by mistake I came back and she told me she threw it away...
B. M.
The food was good but i felt the menu lacked fresh items (ie salads). It was a quiet atmosphere for such a big place in a busy area of town. I would have prefered something a little more lively
J. P.
Great burger and Guinness with a few friends over for the ladies rugby. Went back several times. All thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to the barmen waitresses and kitchen 👍👍👍
R.
Do you enjoy all the parts no one else wants? Well me too, it turns out that the bits left over taste better than the bits left under. Go and smash your Ulster head in that mash spuds.
S. D.
Good atmosphere in this pub. Staff friendly and helpful. Great selection of beer and spirits. Buffet excellent value for money and plenty of choices of food.
S. K.
In for a few pints. Staff were friendly and uniform clean and tidy. The food coming out of the kitchen looked amazing will be back to try it
N. C.
Had their take away - Big Sexy Burger on Instagram. Excellent food and great service - highly recommended.

Nice food, friendly staff and handy location if your in Belfast city. A little hard to find though, if you don't know your way around, its up a side lane off the main shopping street.
R. G.
Lovely staff! And they deal with their customers very well, even when they are being quite the hassle. Will be back again!
g. m.
Stopped here for dinner on the way back to Dublin. Must have caught them at the wrong time because we seemed rushed. The people were pleasant but the food could stand some improvement.
j. t.
Typical Belfast pub, staff friendly and toilets clean. Good atmosphere.
R. M.
Usual top quality main had rib eye steak but really disappointed in dessert had pavlova but was minimal portion an not the dessert I was expecting.
A. G. U.
Staff are great. Food was nice if a little pricey
A. M.
Had an absolutely beautiful meal in here on Thursday evening..being vegetarian I thought there was only the green machine burger until our lovely waiter caolan gave me another menu..I had the shepardless pie even my partner thought it was gorgeous.will definitely be back to try the burger & really hope caolan is working so friendly & helpful he is an absolute asset to your business
F. F.
The meal was very nice, it tastes wonderful. The service was also very good you never have to wait for a new drink and if you have some questions they try to answer anything.
J. P.

j. b.
Lovely food , great drinks selection. Very attentive staff. Also a great old bar
A. S.
Great quality food!
Only issue being the chips were actually fries
K. G.
As usual the standard of food and service was excellent. We have been there many times for a meal and it is always the same high standard of catering.
D. M.
Decent meal but refused to pay for apple crumble as it was like a large bowl of pureed baby food with a small amount of crumble on top. Was taken off my bill without fuss.
P. M.
Worthy winners of the 2017 Best Gastro Pub award. Best steaks in Belfast, combined with really friendly staff. Would recommend a visit.

Friendly staff, good food and good service, fillet steak wasn't the best I've had for the money but I fear that's underselling it as it was genuinely good! Just not quite 5 stars.

Great good and great selection of alcohol however the place is a bit dated and could do with a few bits of modernisation. Other than that it is great value for money.
