Reviews of The Craven Arms
K. J.
A Black Country Ales pub with a great selection of real ales not just their own. Eight pumps available when we visited. They also serve some craft beer. A traditional heritage boozer decorated with ceramic tiles. Cosy interior with a open fire and a pub cat.
A great contrast to the fizz palaces around Broad Street.
Friendly staff .
Sells cheese and onion cobs scotch eggs and sausage rolls. Just around the corner from the Mailbox and 5 minutes from New Street station.
U. R.
Went wanderin' round a building site and found this lickle gem.
Can't lie - Old man's pub, straight up. There was deez 2 oldheads on the real ale trail, getting some stamps on a card for their troubles like back in the war. I sat next to Father Time and Grandfather Clock and they be talking bout old days and Covid, made man's feel nostaljic.
Double brandy and coke 5.85 fam, Courvesiour too. None of dat black bottle wetherspoons bilf.
Can't knock that my G.
N. D.
Excellently served Black Country beers, wholesome freshly prepared food,& a well tended warming real fire. How a welcoming, real public house, with a proud publican, should be.
M. S.
Lovely little pub with great selection of real ales
G. G.
Lovely atmosphere my Arabic best mate says it reminds him of EastEnders. I went in by myself to have a glass of red wine whilst sorting out my bills, if you can't sort your bills out in your local then there's no point in going 🥰👍🏾👸🏾
K. D.
Amazing gem in the middle of brutalist Birmingham
Great choice of beers
Welcoming staff
Eclectic mix of customers that just get on
Will go again!!!
H.
Great pub with great ales and a smashing landlord.
Love this pub always pop in if we have a show at the academy or just visiting town. Great atmosphere, John is a lovely man with a great sense of humour.
M. S.
It is what you would expect, a pub in town. However, it has some of the most beautiful original tiles that I have seen.
Aside from that the staff were efficient, the beer was good and there was available seating in the hall hour before last orders on a Saturday night.
M. S.
Solid city pub.
Good selection of craft beer, cosy atmosphere and always clean. Staff are friendly and welcoming, as well as a great selection of bar snacks.
Overall, the perfect after work pint venue.
E. M.
Always great service and great drinks, love the atmosphere it's such a classic pub without being grotty and falling to pieces, lovely and cosy too
S. C.
I've been to many of our Cities pubs over the years, the Eagle and Tunn being one of them thankfully before its demolition. I have kept meaning to visit the Craven Arms and did so for the first time on Saturday night. Wow what a pub, if you want to experience what a pub would've been like before mobile phones and the internet this is a close as it probably gets. Great beer, bar staff and a great atmosphere, hopefully this pub will be around for many like minded pub goers to experience for years to come.
G. Y.
Great traditional pub serving brilliant range of guest keg beers - plus an all day breakfast. What more could you ask for?
It's been under new management for just over three months, and they're doing a grand job.
J. L.
Great Beer. Great venue. The Bar is left unoccupied for large amounts of time so you have to wait or try and attract some attention when looking through to the Kitchen. This happens every time. Shocking!
E. K.
I really liked it!! It gives you the feeling as if you are on a ship, pretty colours. Also if you go, try the cider, and ask for the one that is kept on a whiskey barrel!!! You won't need many!! 😉
P. B.
Good selection of Beers as always... friendly vibrant atmosphere.... advertised snacks..Pork pies.. Scotch egg .. Crisps etc. A good evening had by all.
E. L.
Just a short walk from the bright lights of the Mailbox is the cosy Craven Arms with an ever rotating selection of cask and keg beers and probably the best pint of Guinness in that part of town
B. M.
Great pub with friendly staff and a great selection of real ale
I. W.
Great little street corner pub. Just enough out of the way of the mailbox. Great choice of ales ,and selection of cobs.Well worth a visit, away from the madness of Brum city centre.
G. J.
Real pub, real fire, real beer. Friendly helpful staff.
G. M.
Great little pub with excellent ales and a good atmosphere. Well worth adding to any ale trail.
J. K.
Love it, John is very knowledgeable with his beers and ciders. The pub grub is great too. 100% will come back
E. V.
Excellent beers. Great pub
F.
Brilliant pub, me and my girlfriend came here as we just happened to stumble upon it on a walk around Birmingham and a quick Google search told us it was in the top 20 pubs in Birmingham so we said we have to go in !
I had a Guinness and it was really nice and poured correctly. My girlfriend tried the double Dragon as it was recommended by the staff. We both loved the Double Dragon so much we stayed for another two pints of it and invited my girlfriends parents to the pub to try it for themselves, they also really liked it!
The staff were very friendly and helpful. The price was amazing we felt as the quality of the drinks were tip top.
I would recommend going to this pub for sure. The pub itself is very aesthetically pleasing inside and out ! The green tiles on the outside are a work of art. I look forward to returning and enjoying another double dragon the next time I am visiting Birmingham :)
M. C.
Great pub good selection of beers, well worth finding out if your in Birmingham
I. H.
Proper pub. Well presented, friendly and great selection of beer. Off track gem!
M. F.
Tried a few ales non see quiet to my taste, they had Bank's sunbeam(didn't try it as not for me)if only they had Bank's Amber 🤪
C. P.
Cosy, warm, traditional pub with craft ales, cobs, and friendly staff..
R. A.
A great find in the city, a local that welcomes everyone. A great selection of beers and ciders at very reasonable prices.
S. P.
Great traditional 'boozer' just a few minutes walk from New Street and convenient for The Mailbox. Had my doubts about visiting due to some negative reviews since management change but I wasn't let down. BCA ales on four pumps and I think there were five interesting guest ales. Even some 'evil keg'. I was there lunchtime and quite a few people were eating some nice looking lunch. Worth a visit.
B. T.
Lovely pub serving a fantastic selection of local Real Ales. If you enjoy a proper pint definitely worth a visit!
M. G.
A proper pub! Good choice of drinks. If it had a TV to show the football it would definitely be 5☆
T. F.
A lovely traditional pub, great to sit and have a chat and speedy service.
A. M.
Brilliant pub. Great beer, great atmosphere and great pub food
m. f.
Lovely traditional English Pub. Great beers and real scatching behind the bar.
T.
Beautiful pub with superb ales. Friendly landlord. Highly recommended.
S. K.
A classic pub, in fact, a little gem tucked away. Certainly a breath of fresh air from the superficial stuffiness of the Mailbox, situated right next door. Superb real ales pulled by the most welcoming staff, who are an absolute credit to The Craven Arms. Service is everything and many pubs with potential lack the basic skills, not The Craven Arms, they have it all! Enjoy as much as I did but that will take some beating!
A. R.
Friendly staff, well priced great beer
A. G.
Absolute hidden gem of a traditional pub, which is rare these days. Clean, furnished and effort put into every square inch of the place, cannot recomend enough if you crave a unique traditional ale or a pint of carling as you're watching football or listening to the jukebox. 10/10
T. M.
Lovely Pint of beer home made bread roll perfect.
J. H.
A gem of a pub in the heart of Birmingham. Friendly staff and great atmosphere.
C. C.
This pub has had a great makeover and stocks a great range of real ales,.
Presently, the only food is their bar snacks.
Nice to see that during the restoration the Holdens name was revealed on the facade.
Give them a try, you won't be disappointed, easy walking distance from Gas Street.
;o)
J. W.
There aren't many old Birmingham City Centre pubs that haven't been lost to the city planner, civic architect and demolition man with his wrecking ball, the brewery moderniser or the amateur.
But there's this one!
A little street corner gem wrapped in gorgeous blue ceramic tiles and inside all carved mahogany and other hardwoods. And 11 beers on the handpulls too.
An absolute must visit just at the back of the Mailbox.
M. D.
Excellent as ever. Good beer and perfect cheese and onion cob.
M. F.
Great ale pub in central Birmingham
A. C.
Lovely pub, good ales, great atmosphere. Like The Wellington but more relaxed!
P. D.
I love this pub. I have been using this place for close to 25 years at the time of writing this. A fantastic range of real ales is always available as well as a very warm welcome.
If you find yourself in Birmingham City Centre do go and check it out.
F. N.
Good vibe and beer. A lot better inside than outside but that's the right way round to be! Would be nice to have even a small menu but won't put me off visiting again...
S. K.
One of my favorite pubs in Birmingham. Take that extra minute’s walk up on Upper gough street and visit this traditional and exquisite little gem
M. P.
Lovely traditional boozer. Good choice of ales and reasonably priced.
M. R.
The best BCA pub by far, good beer, and top class old skool decor. Slightly off the beaten track, worth seeking out.
K. A.
Classic old world pub with some epic ale's
C. O.
Beautiful Victorian boozer inside and out, great selection of beers
A. M.
Pub looks really small from outside but is bigger than you think.they do loads of different ales here.its an old fashioned looking pub but friendly enough with cheapish prices. They do snacks here but don't think they do main meals.it has recently been took over by new management.also when weathers nice they do put seats out side on the side street.
M. C.
Great pub. Great choice of real ale. Lovely folk. And live music on the 1st Saturday of every month.
v. g.
Beautiful family run pub and really friendly
v.
Love this little building in a relaxing atmosphere, and the way my bf ordered the beer😂both cute hahah
D. B.

T. C.
Great little proper pub. Excellent beer too.
Y. O. R. I.
Called in a few months ago with a friend, fantastic little drinking pub, was very busy (so don't be surprised if you have to stand during busy periods). It has an old school look and feel about the place. Attentive staff and would recommend if you simply want a place to have a drink. No menu as far as i was aware at the time but they do offer bar snacks.
I. M.
Good range of cask condition beers, including a mild beer, also nice pies.
H. H.
This is a fantastic little local pub, we came here to pass time before a show started at the O2 Academy and it was a delight for a real ale drinker like me! They had a great selection of ales, including some interesting specialised ones, so everyone in our group found something they liked. The staff were really friendly, there was plenty of seating available, I'd highly recommend this pub.
I. C.
What can i say. Beer drinkers paradise.
Authentic pub decor with quality fittings including ornate tiling on the outside.
Only downside was being served by a bloke more bothered about the music from his rather large headphones than giving one to one service.
A. M.
I didn't know that there is a fantastic friendly local pub near my place. Such a nice place to relax and enjoy different range of ales.
P. L.
Amazing little pub, must go for real ale drinkers
J. P.
A proper pub with proper drinks served by proper bar staff.
S. B.
Nice place, not overcrowded and easy access to all amenities. When after all the rushing around Birmingham , it's nice to chill out and read a paper waiting to drive home the teenagers. Easy parking evening time as well.
L. N.
Kind of out of the way, and at any initial glance just a basic pub. The thing is that there aren't really many basic pubs left in the city centre. A pint and a cob in comfort, a bit of music but not too loud to prevent chatting, and enough space to fit all the friends in. Would recommend!
C. T.
Brilliant old pub in central Birmingham with a wide selection of ales. Feels reasonably priced in comparison to some of the local bars and a nice change! Staff always friendly and welcoming and very happy it’s our local!
M. A.
Lovely old pub, very relaxing and the pints are good too. Staff can either be very friendly or friendly enough but not chatty (which i personally prefer) well worth a visit if you fancy drinking up a bit of history
A. D.
I made my first visit here with my fiance whilst waiting for a gig at the O2 Academy and was pleasantly surprised at the homely atmosphere and a good selection of ale. The place has recently changed hands and has been refurbished, it looks spotless now. There was a selection of cheeses on the bar for free sample which was nice, apparently they also hold a cheese night on a Monday where the regulars bring in their own selections in! I might have to give that a try. Didn't get to sample the bar food menu though, so I'm not sure what they have to offer.
J. T.
Proper beer lovers pub, with an excellent range of well kept beers, in a proper historic pub, with lots of original architectural features. The staff are also welcoming and knowledgeable about the beer, which isn't always true, even in beer focused pubs.
E. M.
Lovely pub, great atmosphere, fantastic selection of beers really well kept. And they do a mean gun and tonic to boot. Will definitely be back.
I. W.
Wonderful traditional pub. Wide selection of Cask & also three Keg craft beers, good independent offerings. Landlord friendly & helpful. Will definitely return.
S. A.
Nice place for a pint. Friendly staff.
J. H.
Excellent genuine ale bar, a tiny place run with great enthusiasm. Limited options outside ale, soft drinks and pizza but what it does offer it makes sure is very good.
Very old building with all the issues this brings.
G. P.
A happy find for me in these days when so many pubs are closing. It has a great range of changing beers/real ales instead of the 'urines' so many places serve. And a friendly landlord asset called Mickey. This is the place to come for sanity if you are in the Mailbox area.
I. B.
LOTS of ale on tap!!!!!!! Expect city prices, double the price of ale in Wetherspoon's.
You can order a takeaway to the pub and eat it there. They provide plates and cutlery.
Traditional pub feel.
Staff know lots about beer and tasting notes are provided.
At least 12 beers on tap.
A. B.
Lovely back street boozer serving great Black Country and Guest Ales, nice cobblers served
D. B.
An excellent example of a comfortable, traditional pub 10 minutes walk from New St Station! Excellent ales, craft beers, plus the usual spirits, wines, bar food, etc within a couple of minutes walk from the Mailbox.
Z. B.
Nice small traditional pub 👌
T. B.
A hidden gem... Stopped here after dropping off a car club car waiting for a train from New Street.... Amazingly pleasant staff.. Really looked after you. They were playing music for what I can work out was an ill customer.. But always asked if you were OK with it. Definitely worth checking out for being the 'local'. Will be back.
S. J.
Ace, love Harry!
G. B.
Really lovely hidden gem in Birmingham. Staff are friendly, and try the home made bread.
s. w.
Visited on a Sunday night so it was a bit quiet but the landlord was entertaining. This should be a place each Birmingham ale drinker visits to support in their relaunched infancy! Great batches (rolls) too.
G. Y.
Nice pub, good for lunch time beer, good selection of real ales plus cider. Friendly staff. Limited food, filled rolls or Pork Pie but nice enough.
P. L.
Great wee pub, first place I head too after driving from Glasgow.
Small and friendly but dosnt accept scottish £20 notes so had to dig deep for an english one, bar that if you enjoy a nice pint , pay it a visit.
D. P.
Great traditional pub. A good range of ales, around half of which rotate regularly. Friendly locals. No food apart from bar snacks. Strongly recommend, particularly for meeting up with friends.
J. T.
Probably one of the finest ale pubs I've ever been to. Great selection of ales, they don't do food, save for some rolls, but you can take your own food with you. Highly recommended
C. H.
Occasion visitor nice atmosphere people always friendly
T. P.
This place is a hidden gem. Never disappoint s. Even in the crazy times. The Chinese New year, st. Paddy's parade crazy times. They have a wealth of highly talented, knowledgeable black country staff to accompany the eclectic selection of ales.
C. “. F. C.
Fab little pub. Used to use it all time before local nightclub relocated.
Very nice staff. Chatty and friendly. Nice selection of ales and beers.
P. B.
Characterful pub with Great beer choice, music though too loud and for the 20 something barman rather than the mature customers.
A. R.
Lovely old pub with lots of character
Sympathetically restored to show off the old Victorian tiles. Good selection of real ales. Friendly staff.

P. D.
Fantastic pub run by Black Country Ale's when I visited. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
Great example of an old pub with original exterior.
N. M.
Well presented traditional British pub, beer average this visit and somewhat limited, no lemonade was disappointing and one ale had gone off😟
M. M.
Step back to a 1970s Brum boozer (minus the ciggy smoke) in a good way. Could appear in Life on Mars with minimal alteration. Pretty small, very nice feel when visited on a Saturday afternoon.
A. T.
Great atmosphere, thank you !
C. T.
