Reviews of The Old Crown
M. S.
Lives up to its age. Fantastic pub, lots of fond memories here from the six years I have lived in Birmingham. Always a lovely atmosphere and visited on the weekend during the England Vs Wales rugby match - the atmosphere was delightful - not too much and nothing got out of hand. There was also plenty of space round the back of the pub in the new and improved outdoor area. The order to table service was a bit slow and stopped when the pub got very busy - but shows they look after their staff and don't want to overwhelm them. Absolutely loved it and a must visit to anyone new to Birmingham in the Digbeth area.

The old crown is one of the dying breed of pubs that are sadly closing daily. Don't get me wrong, it's by no means a spit and sawdust working mens pub, but it is a place for everyone that has adapted in today's big chain market.
Unlike the soulless chains, the old crown has an atmosphere, character and a great range of drinks.
The food here is also very good , plentiful and tasty. The staff are excellent also.

Went for a Sunday roast, absolutely amazing. Sirloin beef was the best beef I've had from a pub, incredibly tender, great yorkshire too. Lovely staff too and dog friendly.

Came down because a friend was perform, WOW what a gem of a place. Food looks great, plenty of choice of drinks. Awesome atmosphere. So recommend.
B. C.
Lovely old place. We visited for a friend's 60th birthday in a big group. Food was excellent and bar readily accessible for drinks. A nice place, friendly staff and reasonable prices. About a 20 minute walk from New Street Station. Definitely recommend

Visited here the other night whilst on route to a gig, great old style pub that dates back to the 1300s (I think), and steeped with history, there is a board around the back noting specific timelines relating to the pub and also a well (in which what I recall is what the pub was originally built around). Smashing choice of alcoholic beverages to suit all tastes, for lager/ale enthusiasts I highly recommend trying a pint of the Neck Oil.
Food wise again great choice, I had a chicken kebab and it tasted superb, looking at the menu they cater very well for vegetarians. I must say as well the food prepared and served here is to a high standard and not the usual.
Situated close to the 02 Institute so ideal for Pre/Post gig drinks
Staff all friendly and attentive
(going back in a couple of weeks so will defiantly call in here)

I was in room 3 then moved to room 1, the rooms are spotless & cant fault anything !! Very polite owners & staff ,, the menu looks great but dident get a chance to sample it !! Best pub ive been to in the midlands !! If your in brum this is the place to eat drink & stay over !! I would give 10 stars not 5 .

Great pub with lovely bar staff and the food was amazing, my only moan would be was when we asked for another small pot of chilli sauce we were told that you had to go and queue up the bar to order some as it wasn’t free , Believe it or not and considering we didn’t get the dill chutney as advertised with the big Bopper grill .We wasn’t very happy .

If we are in digbeth, this is simply our go to place.
Keep up the good work guys.

Amazing venue - best beer garden in the city. Great value and great range, excellent staff and cracking atmosphere.
S.
Nice venue
Good selection of beers and spirits
Staff freindly anf polite. Loads of table great outdoor seating
M. W.
Very reasonable single room with shared bathroom for a great price. Ideal location, building with plenty of character, great food and drink. Really couldn’t have asked for more.
v. r.
Very old and "rustic" looking room... you could tell that the place was there for a few hundred years. Floor was slanted and you could see daylight through the wall and the wooden beams 😀. The balcony extension was reinforced with Wrought iron ... maybe about 100 years ago so if wouldn't fall off 🤷. Cheap 1 night stay and the staff was friendly enough 😉.
D. p.
It's a great pub and friendly staff the beers 🍻 good too
A.
Great venue, lovely staff. Always a friendly place when the rugby is on the big screens.
D. C.
An excellent pub with a lot of history, superb selection of IPAs and beers. Food was also fantastic. Highly recommended!
b. j.
This place is brilliant. Ancient pub with bags of character. Enormous outdoor space with huge screens for sports, looks like they have live music also. Menu is spot on, great ales and ciders. Staff were excellent even in difficult circumstances. Will definitely be going back as soon as possible.
C. W.
Lovely little pub used before Blues match and after.Nice welcome. Clean toilets good choice of drinks, that will do for me.
K. S.
Great atmosphere and fantastic service and knowledgeable bar staff. My first time here - will definitely be visiting again!!

Great Pub with amazing food and service, great host to the start of our works xmas night out.
Thank uou Matt and all the team!
P. T.
very busy place but plenty of bars to get served at, staff were great and friendly. music was great and not too loud. enjoyed a few drinks in here and would recommend it to both young and old. they also serve food but not tried it so can't comment. all in all a great night
K. Q.
Love this pub, great site and outdoor seating. Would be great with some more patio umbrellas in the open area for sun and rain cover. Great range of drinks but it would be nice for a more range of cocktails than 2. Lovely service and staff.
M. B.
Beautiful venue with a well stocked bar. Will be coming back again and again when I'm in the area.
K. D.
Lovely Barr area great outdoor space friendly door person friendly staff did not eat here but food coming out of the kitchen looked lovely
M. M.
Attended the Bopttomless Brunch and it was incredible!! The service was wonderful and staff were very attentive. And the food! Wow!
D. C.
A good historic pub venue that looks deceptively small from the frontage with an extended covered extension with its own bar and a further outdoors seating area. Good selection of beers and food.
m. k.
Great pub with large covered outdoor/ indoor space at the rear plenty of staff on match days. KRO
H. B.
Looks like a very nice pub, albeit with a sub-par cocktail selection. Good indoor and outdoor seating. Can't comment on the food, as I only visited after it was no longer being served.
A. B.
Lovely character filled hotel with friendly staff.
If you're visiting digbeth for partying and need somewhere nice and comfy to stay this is the place!
If you're looking for an early night and are a light sleeper, digbeth itself isn't the place for you.
T. R.
Fab pub. My favourite pub in digbeth. Friendly and approachable staff and a relaxed atmosphere
M. T.
Nice, pub, nice staff, but regretfully my timing may have wrong as there were only 3 other customers, will go again but maybe later in the evening
C. D.
We had a lovely stay. The rooms were clean and minimal noise from downstairs.
S. H.
Sunday lunch on Father's day was so good! We had the special sharing lamb platter for 2 and my Daughter and partner shared a veggie smoked cauliflower platter for 2. The portions were more than plentiful and the service was really good. Nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend it.
D. R.
I love the venue, drinks are nice, staff really lovely and they tried there best, drinks took 30-40mins because of the whole table service and it was a football night.
I have eaten here many of time on my lunch break and really enjoy the food etc... This time I was left very disappointed with the bar food wings flavour not nice and hummus could be smoother or drizzle some olive oil over it!
L. H.
Me and my 2 sisters dropped in for lunch last Friday as a break in completing the Digbeth street art walk. The pub has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere and the staff are very welcoming and friendly. They were particularly helpful with regard to explaining the gluten free options on the menu. The food was excellent, both the halloumi bowl (GF) and the fish and chips. I've eaten and drank at this pub a number of times over the years and the menu offered now is by far the best and the food to a very high standard. My 2 sisters have never visited before and they were highly complimentary about the fish and chips (Their usual selection off any menu, so they see themselves as experts regarding this dish lol). They did try my halloumi bowl and really liked it. So I'm hopeful they will be more adventurous on our next visit.
A. P.
Good beer, fantastic venue enjoyed the visit 👍🏻
T. H.
Decent pub with decent beer. Wasn't here long but seemed okay. Bouncer was a good chap
C. F.
Really lovely pub, good staff, good prices
K. w.
Great pub and pint. Will return with work on our xmas night out next month 👍🏻
M. F.
Friendly place where you feel at home.
Very old building with stairs. Accomodation locked at night from twelve but freedom to arrive later through the back door.
Comfortable beds and good family bedroom size.
L. T.
Delicious lunch on beautifully renovated, historic pub. Fantastic gin and wine menu and really spacious seating.
E. H.
Nice pint of Symonds Cider. Great food by BOP.
R. M.
Good pub nice ale probably not for my demographic
N. H.
Really difficult to book food outdoors in brum without having to leave really big deposits or being full.understandable to a degree with many oiks not turning up after booking.however the crown was very easy and accomodating and although an old digbeth hostelry on the outside, inside had loads of room with millenium dome- esque roof covering to the rear to keep us dry in thunderstorms!.symonds cider from herefordshire the best as well.
Food great and service really personable and will be brilliant when lockdown eases and the sun comes out.thanks all at the crown
V. H.
Great food and good beer. Veggie babby was awesome!
J. T.
Great pub, great staff, the the room was gorgeous too
C. O.
Friendly staff, good selection of drinks but let down by incongruous decor (not fitting the history of the place).
D.
Great pub, great selection including Gluten Free beers which is pretty rare now. Had a great time and intend to visit again soon.
C. D.
Good football pub and great roast dinner
J. S.
Friendly pub with a exallant beer garden. Good music
K. P.
Pretty old pub, pitty the back outside area is all under cover all smokers there little to no ventilation if your a non smoker
A. C.
We had an inside table booked on Saturday for lunch. The place was clean and the food was good. However, the experience was let down by the lack of service during a quiet spell.
At no point were we offered menus or advised we had to get menus from the bar. The food was taken to the table. I had fish and chips and asked for vinegar and ketchup. I had to ask twice for vinegar and when it came to the ketchup I was told they didn't have any sachets and was presented with a catering sized Heinz ketchup container rather than it being served in a ramekin, similar to the tartare sauce.
After our meal, we waited a good 15 minutes for the plates to be cleared and that only happened as we'd piled up the plates and was about to put them on another table.
Overall the experience was trainted by a lack of focus on the customer, on a day that wasn't too busy with plenty of staff around.
C. Y.
lovely old place, massive heated smoking area.
S. Y.
Fantastic traditional pub with a great history 👍
T. M.
Great atmosphere all around. Lovely choice of beer and food was superb 👌
W. C.
Had a great Easter Sunday roast with the family in this beautiful old pub. The food was superb and good value for the quality too. The lamb shank was top notch. The staff were brilliant - really helpful and friendly. Great menu for kids too. Very accommodating for the little ones.
M. M.
Great pub, as it always has been. Huge garden is comprehensively covered and heated, meze food available at the moment is incredible
s. d.
My friend that lives in town gave me a grand city tour and this was one of the must go places. A historic lovely building where families come to enjoy a drink and a meal. Lovely friendly atmosphere here and delicious meals. You can try pub classics as well as other menu items.
Nice little surprise was that they had amazing cappuccinos as well! Just the boost needed on a midafternoon
N. H.
Classic pub with great addition of a superb street food menu
P. M.
We had a lovely 2 night stay at the Old Crown. This is a lovely pub. Very authentic inside, with a great outdoor area. The traditional old beamed building has lots of character. The room was small but comfortable. The breakfast was fresh and very good quality. The standard friendly too. I must make a special mention to Roy. The night porter. On both nights he came to our aid to help us get in and also ensured we were ok in the morning. Sorry Roy for getting you out of bed after 4am. You are a try asset to the hotel and made our stay. The hotel is also within walking distance of the city centre.
R. S.
Good place to book a table. Seating was spaced accordingly and the service was swift. All Covid safety guidelines adhered too. Enjoyable time.
R. N.
Stopped here for a meal after a meeting on a work trip Wednesday evening. The pub is lovely, nice traditional looking bar good service. The menu had a few unusual items and the food was pretty good. Both well presented and tasted good. Really enjoyed it. And a relatively short walk back to the station afterwards.
P. D.
What a face lift this place has recieved since my last visit. It once was an old dark run down bar. Now its bright comfy and warm very trendy. Very friendly staff who talk through there selection of drinks. Food was second to none 0lenty on the menu as well for the picky eater. Really enjoyed sitting on a wing back chair by a nice hot stove.

Reported as being the oldest secular building in Birmingham, dating back to 1368, the long black and white frontage of this pub squats on the side of a very busy road, opposite car sales outlets. It forms part of a cultural Quarter in Deritend which includes music, cinema and dining clubs underneath railway arches beyond which is an old industrial area of the city. You enter a roomy public bar, with a good standing area, but lined with tables as well as sofas in the back room, with open fire, leading to a beer garden. A good range of real ales. Food was good too. Had the steak Pie and veg. And a big beef burger with chips and salad. Nice staff. Well worth a visit.
L. S.
We stayed for 2 nights. Firstly this pub is a real find. It was a really pleasant surprise. We'd been recommended it so we tried it and I'm glad we did. A good range of beers. Pretty reasonable prices for a city pub. A great beer garden which has an outside bar and DJ booth. Car parking is available. It gets busy but it has a great vibe. The staff were all really nice and even though they were really busy, the waiting time at the bar isn't long at all. The food we had was nice. Food stops at 8pm which caught us out as we went to order at 8.10 so watch for that one. It was clean and pretty well maintained from what we could see.
The room we had for the night... it was certainly a great room. It has a wow factor. Bed was comfortable and it was clean and tidy. A second towel would have been nice but we always take one of our own if we stay anywhere so it wasn't an issue. Our room had no shower, just a bath. At night you can hear the traffic as the city rudeboyz in their high powered cars race passed but the room has secondary glazing to reduce the noise impact. We had a good nights sleep. Breakfast in the mornings was nice despite having a hangover!
This pub is pretty big. It is really worth the money. Better than the soulless chain hotels. Less than 10 minutes walk to the Bull Ring. 5 minutes from the O2 Institute and a short (cheap) taxi ride from the O2 Academy.
Simple question is "would we stay here again?" Definitely, we will stay here next time we're in Birmingham.
D. S.
An good looking pub with an eclectic selection of foods and drinks. They have ginger beer on tap and even their own pizza oven which creates really great pizzas.
I missed out on the wings but everything me and my friends had was great. The staff were nice too!
Great place!
J.
Great pub, good food
l. n.
A great pub that blends the traditional with the modern, great selection of beers and fantastic food!
L. M. A.
Fun experience. Friendly staff, pub food was good with good choice. Room was fun and full of character. Bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper as the walls are thin as they are very old. Nice outdoor area and a good find!
H. M.
Went in for dinner and a drink. Friendly bar staff, quick service and plenty of choice for a good price. The bar had a few tables occupied so wasn't too busy, yet had a nice atmosphere. Really nice old fashioned venue. Highly recommended to anyone who likes a simple pub.
M. P.
The Old Crown is a gem of a hotel. The food is very good. The accommodation is superb value. The building itself is breathtaking in its antiquity with winding corridors, fascinating structure and generous room sizes. The staff are friendly and helpful. The only downside is noise from traffic outside and the pub downstairs. If you don't mind that, then it is certainly worthy of the 5th star. Thank you for a lovely overnight stay.
K. S.
Great pub and location for town and a brilliant inclusive breakfast. Would give 5 stars but shared bathroom and toilet in corridor and rooms can be a little noisy sometimes. However for the good value price it's not a problem.
R. D.
A very vibrant pub with a large beer garden, which was fabulous in the sunshine. The garden has an outside bar and long tables and benches. It also features a big screen on which the Wimbledon tennis was showing. A very enjoyable place to spend a sunny afternoon.
L. R.
I visited the Old Crown last weekend with friends. I havnt been for a while. It was a Nothern Soul night. The atmosphere was great as usual and there were also lots of football fans from the local match, they behaved themselves. It was raining heavy but it didn't stop people sitting under cover outside. DJ was outside, was a good night. Bar staff really friendly and knowlegable about drinks, food ok but just had a snack.
Love this old pub worth a visit just to see it.
The only criticism I have and it was voiced throughout our group was that you have redecorated the toilets, I was so disappointed, gone was the old traditional washroom an in with a mish mash of modern. To be honest it did not look finished, maybe it's a work in progress. It seemed out of character with the est of the building, dont try to modernise it, all said an done of course we will return.
B. C.
This is a brilliant tavern oozing with history (not literally). Prices are very reasonable, staff are excellent and lovely. Walls are thin, not a five star Hilton, but has more charisma and life than those places could ever have.
C. F.
They sell red stripe on draught, DF
J. A.
Set inside a beautiful Grade II listed building, I thoroughly enjoy every minute spent here for lunch when I'm in Digbeth. Staff are friendly, they have a good selection of beers/ciders on draught and the food is good value.
They also have a deli counter next door where sandwiches, pastries and cakes can be taken out.
A. F. (.
Cia and Maread were very kind and friendly to us after a long, tiring day. The fish and chips were smashing, the beer cold and the atmosphere clean and welcoming. The bar, tables and bathrooms were neat and tidy thanks to Cia and Maread during these difficult times. Much appreciated!
R. T.
Nice friendly staff will go again food good well worth a visit
K. G.
I enjoy the atmosphere and friendly staff along with good quality meals accompanied by complimentary drinks. Would recommended this place to anyone visiting from out of town as they also provide accommodation in one of the oldest buildings still standing. Many times ive stayed and enjoyed the service and the atmosphere from live events and seasonally bespoke venues. Highly recommended for a great experience, food and drink.
J. O.
Great food at a reasonable price. Known for having huge sandwiches so beware when you are ordering a medium.
One of the oldest pubs in England which is cool.
Only downside is staff could work on their customer service skills.
A. W.
Always have good experiences here, love the Sunday roast menu it's the WINNER. Nicer in the summer, as the outside area is open and there is often a big screen and BBQ. Inside has a quaint feel, they've done a good job of maintaining the original features of the oldest pub in Birmingham. Great for groups and I've never had difficulty reserving a table or trying my luck last minute. The staff are ace, the service brilliant and the food is served hot and comes freshly.
S. Y.
Awesome pub! Great traditional British pub for the main bar with excellent lounge used as function space and a really big beer garden and outside bar. I was at the place for a birthday party and really enjoyed the evening.
J. G.
Stayed at the Old Crown inn: the location was very convenient because we were going to a concert at the nearby O2 institute (only a 3 minute walk to the O2). The room was clean, and the old building had lots of charm. The pub was quite nice, and the food pretty standard pub fare. Breakfast in the morning was delicious, one of the best I have had in awhile. Great stay, especially for the price.
T. S.
Fantastic old school pub if a little busy with the student crowd. To be fair though I used to love it as a student here before a night out clubbing in Digbeth. The beer selection is OK, pretty standard selection, nothing too special. Lovely building though!
W. H.
A bit crowded when a party gets into full swing, but I feel it just adds to the atmosphere and character of the place along with the fact it appears to be slowly sinking. Limited choice of beers, but a good limited choice (no watery stuff). They also offer boarding, so you can really go wild! Despite being the oldest building in Birmingham, it is still a good place to go no matter your age.
p. b.
Enjoyed a very good pint of Guinness here tonight. Amy and Eliza were great company telling me some fascinating stories of Birmingham's oldest pub.
My intention was to enjoy a solitary pint, but due to the enthralling stories of the ladies I stayed a little longer.
Well worth a visit!
J. “. L.
Love this place, they are just so chilled out. Great beer, great atmosphere, no hassle. Even at the end of the night, rather than do the standard "can you drink up please" 2 minutes after ordering your last drink, they politely provide you with a plastic cup so you may take your drink with you. Keep doing what you're doing, just superb.
s. m.
Great place, fair prices with plenty of choice great food and massive themed beer garden with events
K. R.
Supposedly oldest pub in Birmingham. Having been past this place twice a day for over 37 years a visit was made. Pleasantly surprised about of the space in this building. Good outdoor area. Food menu had good choice. Will be ready visiting soon.
E. M.
Super trendy pub, that's also steeped in history. Great food too, and a few bars for when it's busy! There's no mystery as to why it's so popular!
N. T.
The old crown is a great traditional pub, it's been there since the 1800's and still has that feel to it inside which is really nice.
Great for the winter or summer as they have a a beer garden round the back with a great sitting area. Great place to start off a night or to come on a sunny day after work.
As it's in the heart of digbeth right next to the custard factory there's always events on here or close by.
Great atmosphere, great clientele and staff.
S. M.
Lovely quirky pub with a fantastic beer garden. The roast dinners are a must! Handy for a drink after Digbeth Dining Club or before a visit to the custard Factory's many attractions. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Gets very busy on a sunny day so if you are a group set on going i'd advise calling ahead.
J. G.
Lovely cosy place with so much history. Beware the plumbing in the toilets - quite dangerous taps (not sure if they're in the middle of a refurb - hope that's the case!). We were also served a meat burger when we'd ordered a veggie one, but it was corrected and all our food was tasty.
Z. S.
Portion sizes were small but the food quality was delicious and the service was fast and friendly
D. E.
Lovely place great round the back massive area under shelter
P. W.
What a fab bar. We were there for the Real Peaky Blinders tour, but we're greatly surprised by this fantastic old pub. Looks like it is a live music venue too. Highly recommended.
S.
Had a lovely Sunday Lunch that was reasonably priced and the place was very child friendly, they could do with more high chairs for how many children were there and there might have actually been too much chicken on my lunch if that can even be a complaint! :)
C. K.
This is the oldest pub in Birmingham and it's pretty nice little gem. From the outside it looks like it's uninviting and a little like it's just an old man's pub. But it's so much more than that. It's part old building part extension with some lovely outside space too. The building it self had loads of small cosy areas inside that make it a really nice place to explore and hide about for drinks. Well worth a visit. Drinks are reasonable prices and they do food. It's a little walk out of the center but round the corner from the Digbeth Dining club so a good place to visit after.
J. 2.
Lovely old building, brilliant little pub, the bar staff call me ‘sir’ which is hard to find nowadays...and judging by the menu some ‘good grub’ the atmosphere was perfect for a quiet pint and talking with friends...what can I say? i loved it...no doubt I will come back again
S. R.
Brims oldest pub,but still a great pub to have a drink
E. W.
This is a fantastic venue great ouside garden under cover lovely indoor its wonderful we recommend this place
A. M.
Great pub pre match. Good choice and huge beer garden.
J. A.
A fantastic old pub, the vibes are an amazing mix of traditional pub and somewhere fun to drink
B. L.
Amazing food- great service. :)
I. 9.
1 of the best pub in Birmingham, plus 1 of the oldest in England... Very good drinks and food
s. o.
We only came for the football, so can't comment on the food. The screen out back was good, but I found it very odd given size of the area that there was only one screen. It was standing room only, bar a couple of benches at the front. Again, that was odd. They have an outside area with lots of picnic tables and a bar, yet the screen was further down, which I suspect is probably usually a car park outside of the World Cup period. It was a nice atmosphere though - apart from the smell of weed. I had already been pre-warned that we would go soaked if England scored. That was true. Beer went everywhere. So that's obviously a regular thing.
Basically, it's a bit rowdy but I didn't see any trouble.
L. N.
A great place to go if you fancy a bite to eat that is basic pub grub without having to negotiate the Birmingham city pub scrum. It has a pleasing interior with lots of little off shoots - cosy nooks. It's close to The Custard Factory and has a live music venue outside. The city centre is a 10 minute walk away and I think it's worth doing if you want to visit this very old pub or if you stay the night as it also has rooms.
G. Y.
Met up here with some friends as we'd been having a look around the Custard Factory. What a lovely, traditional style pub. To complete the atmosphere, there was a group sitting around the table next to us playing Irish Music. Wonderful!
J.
Love this pub, child friendly, polite friendly staff. Love the outside area and unique industrial furniture, it's not our first visit, last time we visited the outside bar was open. Food is good and affordable.
J. H.
I visited this pub as a visiting football supporter at Birmingham City FC. The ales on offer were good and well kept which was my prime concern. The staff were very attentive and the customers were friendly. A pub I'll definitely visit again.
C. C.
Never been to this pub before but what a surprise. Oldest pub in Birmingham it retains all its character. The food was as close to home made you will get in most pubs. Well worth a visit . Great food, very good service and lots of character.
M. W.
Had an amazing time, the food and drink was brilliant and the atmosphere was spot on. Recommended 100%
S. L.
Great covered beer garden and the Sunday Roast was delicious! Good selection of draught and bottled beer
D. C.
The oldest pub in Birmingham has loads of character, a huge space in the artisanal quarter of the city centre. It stands out in that respect, it is a piece of history, most of its siblings are a glint in the eye.
There is a relaxed atmosphere to The Old Crown, from the staff, to its inhabitants to its food. On the food front the menu does try hard to separate its offerings from that of your average chain.
Most dishes lack the kind of attention to detail that you'll find in good pub food. It's not all bad; the sandwiches are special, made with sourdough, served with tasty sides and literally oozes with flavour.
Great value for money, but don't expect that on par with other gastro pubs in the area (e.g., The Pint Shop). Be sure to take a good look around while you wait for your food to be served. The Old Crown has bags of character.

Really interesting and quite cool pub... Has a really good beer garden which, had I visited in warm weather would have been amazing... Friendly place where you can just be yourself and not worry about what people are thinking... And has lots of interesting history as well... It's well worth a visit if you are in the area, I just wish I'd discovered it on the first day of my three days visit to Birmingham... I would probably have been in there for the full three nights... Recommended..

I've been a regular at the old crown for the last 10 years in both the bar as well as staying in the b&b upstairs on a number of occassions. The staff have always been very welcoming and the food is always great. The rooms are great value for money considering you are so close to the bull ring and give you so much more than anywhere close by.
Overall a must try if you are in the local area even if its just a quick half to see this interesting listed building.

There was 9 of us, i had booked a table for my birthday meal. The staff were superb, very friendly, the food was beautiful, everyone enjoyed it. Between us we had steak, chicken, ham and flat bread with meatballs. Well done to the staff for making my night a great night, i will go back for more meals

I recently organised a night out for work for 12 people. As our office are new to the area we wanted check out some of the local pubs. We had a buffet style meal and it was very well priced and very tasty. Everyone kept saying how nice it was and enjoyed looking around as the pub is dripping with history. It was really exciting to discover such a little gem of a pub in our area.
It was a very successful night out and everyone mentioned they will be going back again and again. We could not stop talking about how we are going to spend our summer nights after work by making the most of the area in the back of the pub and soaking up the sun.
The food was great, service was excellent, well done Kieran and all the staff!
See you again soon!
M. B.
New menu is spot on. House bop burger rivals that of OPM
T. D.
Love this Pub .. great food.. lovely staff.. sit outside to watch the big screen .. they had the tennis on when we visited .. World Cup on as well .. meals are reasonably priced..inside the Pub is old beams, wooden floors, apparently oldest Pub in Birmingham
Z. P.
Super cosy pub, great food and amazing portraits
C. G.
Good food, good selection of ales and nice atmosphere. It can get too crowded some times and it van attract a weird crowd during peak times. But still one of the nicest pubs in Digbeth and the older in Birmingham.
V. C.
Oldest pub in Birmingham but moving with the times! Great food and ale selection, service is always great and they have a little cafe section if you want to grab a quick hearty lunch.
On top of all this you can stay there! Fond memories in this place.
L. T.
Excellent food and service was fab
D. M.
Amazing pub. Great interior and brilliant outdoor space. Excellent service in challenging covid climate👍
C. M.
Friendly pub with a huge covered beer garden
b. h.
Seemed a decent pub with separate lounge dining area and beer garden. My beer was a little chewy, but they had 3 off the pump plus the usual largess etc. Would go back
H. T.
What a wonderful place in an unexpected area. Next to the custard factory (also worth a visit), this very old pub filled with original features does a great beer selection and superb pub grub. Quiet at the weekend which is a crying shame. Best pub near the centre. Go!
G. H.
Fantastic traditional pub with one of the beer beer gardens in the city, they have live music and club nights here, as well as football screening during the world cup, the food is also great delicious. Always worth the trip.
S. C.
Really nice old pub! Can be very busy so if your there only for drinks expect a delay some nights! Foods nice but simple!
A.
Great little pub with a lot of history and some great beers and whisky. Didn't eat but the plates coming out looked like they had generous portions. Friendly staff, felt very welcome
r. s.
Lovely old building and excellent food with large portions. The only reason it got four stars is there was no real ale on any of the three pumps. The alternatives were okay though.
S. H.
Great historic pub with decent beer selection and lots of nooks and crannies and big beer garden. Only downside is terribly undersized bar area for size of venue means inevitable long wait for service especially at busy times!
R.
Special occasion only in my opinion as the location does not justify the expense..Sunday lunch was ok and differed from as advertised on the website. Portion size needs to be greater, good sticky toffee pudding though.
M. B.
I stayed 3 nights at The Old Crown. I would definitely return, possibly the same time next year. The staff were helpful and the old building is very quirky. There are shared shower and toilet facilities but that was not a bother to me but I know to many it's a no-no. There is access to Wi-Fi, food and off course (being a pub) drink!
P. C.
I don't understand all the amazing reviews.
Not great, came warm, cauliflower cheese was not nice!
The app to order is fiddly.
We wouldn't return.
P.
It is the oldest secular building in Birmingham, the oldest inn dating back from 1368. It retains his "black and white" timber frame, although almost all of the present building dates from the early 16th century. It On the upper floor there were four rooms. The building had a courtyard to its rear which contained a well. Right now is in the heart of Digbeth creative quarter which is amazing:the contrast between so old and so new! Right now (January 2020) is closed under renovation.

As a person who has lived in Brum for most of my life this was one place I'd always wanted to visit. So today I finally thought I'd give it a turn.
Well after building my hopes up. I left rather disappointed. I went in and feeling quite peckish. I'd just come from the gym. So I was quite hungry.
I asked for cheese on toast with a cup of tea. The manager seemed a little put out by this. Possibly not a fan of vegetarians.
"I've got cheese and ham?"
"Er no thanks I don't eat meat". Her look said it all.
"How about cheese and beans?"
"No just cheese on toast thanks".
"I've only got white bread".
"That'll be fine thanks".
And that was it. For cheese on toast and a mug of tea it came to £5. I was then left standing whilst I made my way to a table. It came after 5 minutes.
Well it certainly wasn't cheese on toast. It was cheese on warm bread. Oh and two napkins. There wasn't any garnish like salad either. It seemed a little lame and solitary. I ate it as I was starving. When I went to get some sauce to try and add life to my meal. I found the bottles mostly empty and covered in the remains of their contents. All crusty and horrible.
The inside of the place seemed ok. The other customers appeared to be enjoying their experience better than me.
It didn't take me long to eat up as there was hardly anything there. I liked the look of the place. And it was very promising.
The manager seemed to enjoy talking to other customers and she was very welcoming to them. But maybe she doesn't like vegetarians or going out of her way if she has to.
I don't know and I'm only guessing. But I do know one thing. I certainly won't be in any rush to head back there.
I. F.
Friendly, atmospheric, historic pub, with some comfortable, clean rooms for B&B.
If you need to get to bed early, and you can't sleep if you can hear music, be aware that the pub is open and playing music until midnight. If you are normally late to bed anyway, or can sleep well in spite of distant music, then it's a hidden gem and great value.
E. R.
What a building! So much character and a beautiful place to stay. Staff all friendly and have a lovely beer garden to rear as well. Will 100% stay here again next time
T. T. (. C.
I love staying at this pub, really homely and historic. Exceptional breakfast! Be aware it's shared bathrooms but they're nicely done and I never mind it.
J. R.
Lovely and lively place. Looking forward to go back :)
C. D.
Great laid back bar in the centre of digbeth with quality tent roof and loads of outdoor heaters
C. S.
It was quite cold inside the pub on this visit
D. k.
Good beer great atmosphere
J. C. (.
Great place, huge inside, loads of places to tuck away in
M. H.
Mad 4 it. Da best. If pubs could be my m8s this one would be one.
In all seriousness it's awesome. Great range of delicious beers, awesome outside area, beautiful interior. Best place for a few bevs before a gig.
C. J.
Cute, clean, and not too busy. Beer garden is really spacious and top notch, with nice wooden booths including red heat lamps 😊
M. S.
Went for a few pre-gig pints on a Wednesday evening. Some lovely brews on tap and excellent beer garden round the back. A real gem of a place.
D. E.
Nice place to have a drink, staff mostly friendly, a little over the top with the social distance thing. We were a group of 11 who were two families out for the first time.
Y. B.
Been many times always a good time
M. D.
Appreciated the veggie Sunday roast option.
P. E.
A nice welcome at this dog friendly pub with large outside space. The menues were a bit sticky which would put me off eating there. Wine was good & not pricey
K. R.
The two Keiron's really pulled out the stops to provide a fantastic 'champagne' reception for our wedding . we used the pub as a midway venue between the church and reception and they provided the gin fizz and ales and superb nibbles that have had people talking ever since. Seriously. Considering we only spent a couple of hours there it really made the wedding special in many people's eyes. We were more than impressed by what they provided and thoroughly recommend this place for food and atmosphere
M. P.
Best pub in Birmingham. Always kept fresh, once I went the loo, came back and they had renovated the beer garden.
Missus reckons she saw a ghost but she's mad.
A. C.
The burger bun was burnt and burger itself was not that great. Awesome location and I love the aesthetic though. I'd stick to just the drinks if I were you.
A. E.
Just popped in with a mate for a drink or 2 was busy but not to the point you was waiting for drinks or a table. service was amazing very fast very friendly. Great beer and price.
A. H.
Beautiful old pub! Inside the decor is lovely!
Went for lunch, it was very quite but the staff were lovely and the food was amazing!
S. B.
Such delicious food, absolutely loved it. I had the Greek Goddess and it was a total delight. My husband had the special Mac and cheese with pulled pork and he was astounded and in awe of it.
J. T.
Stopped by here on our way to Download Festival. Amazing place full of character. Prices for the room (and drinks downstairs) were great, and staff was super accommodating.
J. B.
Really pretty and fun place to be. Very popular so the pub becomes incredibly packed. Beer garden is big and quirky
w. j. Q.
Great pub...friendly and very old...fab cafe on the side and a fab refurb...always stop off before a blues game...super place
D. P.
Having been here a fair bit for lunch I found its staff helpful and friendly... although the beer is standard chain pub variety and atmosphere is a little spit and sawdust mixed with urban hipster and yeolde world pub... the food has descended somewhat over recent months from good to bad, which is a shame... well worth a visit for a local meeting place, but would wait and see what happens food wise!
P. R.
Excellent pub with B & B. Short walk from new street railway station. Good pub with friendly staff and good choice of beer. food available. Recommended
S. M.
Good pub. Don't like installing apps just to buy a drink.
S. P. C.
I've been going there for years. We used to have princes trust meetings there. One Valentine's night I was invited to read poems to lonely people that night. Instead, i made some cards and wrote poetry for a 90 year old woman, a dead frog, and lots of loved ones who were together or apart. Then the owner, Helen based me to come back and see her. I spent a lot of time there, slept in every room, attended events like seminars, business meetings, monthly Brainstorm open mikes, St Patrick's Day events. Last week I attended a Christmas Dinner opened to any and everyone. Food served with a smile, clothes, toiletries, shoes. It's true.#itookallthemincepies. all 4 trays and gave to St Martin's and KICC Church Candlelit Services, homeless, anyone on my travels, refugees on Christmas Day. #spreadingthelove. You will get a good Irish welcome there
J. P.
Oldest pub in Birmingham! Offers great food and a great selection of drinks. The staff are ever so helpful and it's located near the city centre.
Can't comment on the rooms but I suspect they are good looking at other reviews.
C. C.
The hotel was nice, most of the staff are helpful, bit disappointed with the breakfast due to we had to go to a cafe across the road to get it which actually didn't do an English breakfast due to the kitchen not being open in the hotel, so I dont know what I paid for, also we was told when we checked in that the bar would be open when we got back from the gig which it wasnt, overall if these issues hadn't of happened then it would of been a higher number, I would stay there again if these were rectified.
A. M.
Good beer garden and ale choice, Good vibes all around and tasty food. Nice place to stay in if you don't mind mellow music invthe evening.
D. H.
Very Oldie worldy place, the drinks are varied and the food is very good a. and hot. The staff are friendly in the oldest pub in the area!
D. “. W.
As a pub. It's too expensive
A. G.
Staff are friendly, they have a very nice beer garden area and the pub itself is also a nice relaxing area. Beer it top notch.
s. l.
Very good all round. Been one of my favourite places in town for years
M. D.
Traveled many places but for a city this place is the mostvamazong place you can stay. Close to city centre and great pub. I would give more stars if i could but are only 5 on here . One of tbe oldest pubs in Birmingham.
P. P.
Nice boozer with well trained, friendly staff. It's a bit small on the inside so I'd avoid on a busy, rainy night.
I say rainy cuz it has a massive outside area so if it's busy and dry you're fine
L. B.
Only went in for a drink but the place was fine, the staff brilliant!! They had a Peaky Blinders tour going on when we were there, that sounds like a "must" to do!!
T. T.
Great atmosphere, good service, lovely food. Will definitely be back.
S. J.
Recently ate there with my husband before going to the HMV institute. The menu (which is apprently new) looked brilliant, i had a beautiful lasagna and my (fatty!) husband had the Henry VIII burger which is aptly named judging by its size. both of us really enjoyed our meals and it was good value for moeny and the staff were very nice
D. S.
My go to bar when visiting Digbeth. From a quiet drink inside early evening or a bit more lively in the garden, you'll hard pressed not to enjoy this place.
J. H.
I just love this place. Very nice pub and hotel. Great service and very friendly and helpful staff. I will come back..
A. B.
Comfy rooms, very clean, great atmosphere in the pub with friendly staff. Only negative was the road noise, but that can't really be helped. Would stay again.
S. P.
Oldest pub in Brum but such a good vibe in there & not dated at all. Has a good beer garden too for the smokers, definitely recommend
W. P.
Love this place. By far the best feature is the beer garden - it's fantastic in the summer. Great beers, great music, what more do you need?
k. m.

Great pub, the oldest in Birmingham...very charismatic with a fab selection of wines, spirits and beers.
A great food menu too 👍😎🍷🍺☕🍹
M. C.
Great quirky pub and hotel. Nice clean and secure rooms. Always something going on in the pub and digbeth area so book early to avoid missing out.
B. W.
Lovely old establishment in digbeth. A nice place to sit and take in the history. Ginger beer on tap - mega plus point. Service is sometimes v.slow though.
K. D.
Lovely beer garden, great atmosphere inside and out. Looks bright and clean, barstaff could be a little more attentive.
I. W.
Good burgers, good prices, good beer and a decent atmosphere. Please bear in mind that I've only ever been here at lunch time so I have no idea what is like during the evening.
S. O.
I enjoy this pub like i enjoy a good execution of a crazed pedophile. The booze is fairly priced, the food is cheap and well presented but my main fascination is the people! By George! and i'm not talking karma chameleon! No! This was my first time at this beautiful establishment. The people i come across here i'll never truly forget. Using the men's toilet's which wasn't to shabby for a quick squirt! i was greeted by a short, friendly, fat bald man wearing a ghastly Hawaiian shirt who ushered me into his cubical! I was like By George! and i'm not talking did he really want to hurt me! He pulled out a bag which had remarkable resemblance to McDougalls Plain Flour! He said
"Go on son, have a snizzle on this dizzle lad if you're looking for a cheeky time"
Oh I do love being cheeky! I snorted it of his vauxhall vectra car key! We shook hands! He left! Great Chap.
The time reached 8:30pm at this point and oh, was i feeling cheeky! The sound of merry, cheerful not so beautiful people's voices could be heard from every direction! A young male, stumbling around trying to show his best "Techno house" move's took the center stage, catching my eye, he reminded me of my younger self. He accidentally pushed into me knocking my Stella artois all over my Pierre Cardin sweater. I was fascinated, his acquaintance (or whom i'm presuming was a friend) rushed over to grab his falling friend, an aggressive young male to say the least!
He shouted
"Fookin E'll ya bastard Ket head, they ent gonna let you into 2:31 ya prick. Chong some of this rollie ya nonce and let go sort ya lad"
it's only 9:00pm! You've got another 5 hours and 31 minutes to go!
I was confused! Shocked, Bewildered and needed a Poo as something was dropping down my throat.
Worth while the experience.
5 stars.
o.
Very nice place, very clean, nice staff, good range of drinks. Didn't have any food but menu looked good

Nice venue great atmosphere brilliant beer garden with lots of covered seating separate function room that was very big Heineken zero in the fridge which is always a bonus one downside the barmaid served a cider and lime instead of a soda and lime not sure in my years of bar work I've ever had someone order a cider and lime but all in all good place

Went to the crown before a night out. Watch your change as one of the staff gave me change for a tenner when I gave her a twenty. Hhhhmmm I wonder how may other times that’s happen here. Was t a mistake as she still had the till open to see if I’d ask for it. Not good.
M. M.
