Reviews of The Woodman
S. R.
Nice old style pub, historic in the midst of new developments, cheap for the area. Sells real ales, had 4 on when I visited from 4 different breweries. Does food which is reasonably priced. Beer was in good condition when I visited (late Tuesday afternoon) They also do box cider, mainly Lilley's, 3 on tap when I visited. On kegbthere is freedom lager, Carlsberg, Krombasher pils, Hogans cider, Kingstone press wild berry, Purity session ipa, Erdinger and Guinness. All in all a recommended visit if you are in Birmingham especially if you like real ales or ciders
T. B.
Traditional tiled pub with a very good range of craft beer and real ale. Has a student bar feel to it, I didn’t eat there but I saw a couple eating and the portions were large for low prices. Only thing that let it down was when we visited on a Saturday early evening there were only 5 or so people in the pub and there was loud music playing so it had a strange atmosphere.
M. S.
A brilliant pub, always have a great range of drink to choose from and really friendly staff. The food is decent quality and comforting. One of my favourite places to stop by after work.
D. J.
The Woodman is going to be right next to the HS2 Train station once it completed. The pub has traditionally been a student bar but is also patronised by football fans on match days. The pub has an excellent range of ciders, ales and lagers which are kept to perfection so you can enjoy a great pint with really good pub grub.
A. W.
Best beer selection in brum. Always a warm welcome from the staff. HS2 builders blocking the road but this place still open. Make sure you visit 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
J. H.
I have had the pleasure of frequenting this public house over a period of three decades. I can honestly say that it has always retained its character and charm. The staff have obviously come and gone but in my experience they are remarkably all cheerful, friendly and very helpful. The array and choice of real ale changes on a regular basis and are always served in great condition. The story about the mirror behind the bar is part of the pubs charm. I have no hesitation in recommending The Woodman. Check it out.
D. H.
A lovely old building with good beer, good food, and welcoming staff. Just as well it was saved from HS2-related demolition. What's not to like?
G. P.
Best pub in the city. Easy mix of young and old, students and workers, well everybody really. Great beer, great place, a little gem to seek out if you haven't already.
T. S.
First time visiting lovely Victorian pub ,nice staff, good choice of food and selection of beer and Ciders will be more popular when HS2 Station opens will go again
V. S.
This is a great pub. I can't comment about the food because I went out that night for drinks only. I will return for more beer 🍻
D. A.
Old style pub with great ale, surrounded by the future. Well worth a visit.
C. B.
Very busy pub, ordered food and although asked for starter first, it all arrived together so mains went cold. Beer OK, but not brilliant choices, too many empty handpulls!
E. S.
This is a great place, highly recommend.
A specialist drinks establishment and they’ve got something good for everyone. Particularly good if you’re an ale drinker, I’ve been here a few times and they’ve always got a different range of well chosen beers, as well as all the standard Carlsberg, Guinness, etc. They also had a great selection of gins and traditional cider.
The staff are friendly and seem to have a good rapport with everyone. I usually eat when I’ve been here too and it’s always delicious and filling, can’t complain at all. Worth a visit.
A. K.
Love this place. A proper pub, great beers and dedicated staff.
N. C.
Excellent ale pub with good value simple pub food too.
R. M. R. &. C.
Nipped in the Woodman before watching the not so mighty Ipswich play Birmingham City. Intended on just having one before moving on but stayed here for 2 hours! Excellent choice of ales, very well priced and very well kept! It won't be the last time I frequent this place :)
E. L.
In amongst all the HS2 building works the Woodman is still going strong with a great lineup of beers in a building where the old world charm is preserved without being fake
P. d. V. F.
Lovely pub. Great staff. A real find. Great value food with huge snack chip portions.
Unfortunately not local or would happily make it my Local.
C. O.
Stunning renovation of this historic pub. Beautiful historic interior, friendly staff and great drink selection. Gem!
B. W.
Popped in for lunch after visiting Millennium Point. Food was delicious, hot and portions very generous.
Surprised it wasn't busier but maybe roadworks outside have hidden this little gem. Staff very friendly, would definately recommend.
J. B.
Great beer great atmosphere great highly recommended descent sized function room upstairs
J.
Great place. Staff are nice. Drinks are good. Slightly pricey but overall worth it. Wish they'd add some heaters or hot lamps late at night cos it gets a bit chilly but apart from that chill place for students.
A. S.
A much needed addition to the Millennium point area.
Prior to The Woodman being open, there wasn't really any (nice) pubs nearby, you'd have to head to Digbeth or back into the central city area.
Where this pub excels is it's ales. Great selection on tap which changes regularly. I'm told the food is pretty decent, though I'm yet to try. I've had many a pint in their beer "garden", the pub is surrounded by Eastside City Park so you can stand outside, in the sun and not have cars going by a people rushing past with things to do. It's a nice chilled atmosphere. Especially when the fountains are on. There is seating too which is great.
It works as a nice pitstop on your way to Digbeth or a watering hole pre/post-event at Millennium Point or BCU's Parkside campus or on a sunny day when you head to the park and fancy a refreshing beer.
J. H.
Good staff. Beer when I visited was fresh, local and well kept. Loved the artwork on the wall, much of which is for sale too. Ordering via the app is so terrible as to be pointless, however.
E. C.
Nice local pub in the city centre. Welcoming atmosphere.
S. C.
Visited with friends who have been before as they all enjoy real ales. We had a lovely afternoon in this relaxed old fashioned pub. Food was excellent I had a roasted vegetable sandwich with chunky chips. Fantastic value at £5!! Will certainly pay another visit at some point. Bar staff were friendly and attentive.
V.
Very traditional English pub next to Millennium Point. It is small, but full of character.
G. H.
What great service!
Ordering on the app - but the server made sure we had everything we wanted. Very quick service and good quality food for a city centre pub.
G. P.
Best pub in Brum, adjusted really well to difficult circumstances and have created a really friendly and welcoming atmosphere and a great little Beer Garden. Beer is great and well kept. Proper Brummy boozer.
M. L.
Sat outside, spacious environment. Well laid out. Attentive bar staff. Good atmosphere. Well kept beers. Great time.
J. M.
This pub is amazing. Great service and great food. The staff are so friendly and helpful. An absolute hidden gen
T. C.
Come on, it's just the best pub in Brum
K. H.
Birthday celebration the food was cooked well and a reasonable price
A. M.
Great beer, good atmosphere reasonable prices for city pub.
D. B.
Great pub, good selection of ale and cider. Traditional in nature, a lovely photo album explains it revival which I enjoyed reading
Bar maids where great and open to conversation once engaged
Didn't try the food but the menu looked nice and very very decent value both for food and drink being as it's in town.
Will definitely visit again
I. S.
Great pub, currently surrounded by road works
P. A. N.
One of my favourite pubs in the city, since the late nineties, nice clean pint, and you cannot beat chilling out after hard day's graft in the smoke room with the fire blazing
R. L.
Decent pub with real ale and food, friendly staff, popular with local students.
K. J.
Nice quiet pub. Good beer.
S. D.
Lovely, friendly traditional pub.
D.
Cheap, nice staff, good atmosphere. Shame about the location, but can hardly be helped (thanks HS2!)
A. g.
Lovely pub, lots of character and cheap for Birmingham
R. C.
I popped into this hidden gem after leaving the cinema on Park Street, naturally dehydrated. I was instantly impressed by the welcoming landlord and large selection of craft ales. I selected an IPA, which stands for Indian Pale Ale apparently, and sat at the tables outside. This was when I noticed the beautiful hanging baskets. Great pub, great beer, great floral decor.
P. C. B.
Superb pub!
I have frequented this establishment on many occasions whilst back in Birmingham.
A wide selection of ales and ciders (some unusual ones) with great food served by friendly staff, that know their stuff!
You can try before you buy to cut out the chance of getting a pint that’s not to your taste.
A no frills pub serving a good honest pint!
👌🏻
R. D.
Fantastic historical pub with a really nice cosy feel with very friendly/helpful staff. Really good selection of ales. Food is great and very good value. They also have really great taste in music. - best pub in Birmingham-
S. B.
Pleasant drinking pub....food looked great!
D.
Classic listed pub near millennium point old ansells building unspoilt easy walk from moor st station
N. C.
Nice little pub. Had a pint after visiting the thinktank.
D. F.
A drop of good ale and lovely fish & chips before the Saturday match, with a refresher on the way back. Always good beers and food served within a friendly environment.
M. C.
Ok for a couple of drinks which were reasonable priced for the city centre. The live music (well a guy playing a guitar/singing) was ok, but maybe a bit much for a smallish pub. Some seats in the yard out back were quiet or if you wanna watch skaters twisting their ankles then sit out front!
G. A. G.
Classic old pub, next to Curson st.station and millennium point..visited in summer and sat outside, and it sure is a different modern City from that vantage point!Good drinks selection and food reasonably priced for the location. Could sit there all day!..well worth a visit🖤👍🍻🍷
J. N. R.
Amazing pub. Even if the beer's not the world's best you could swig away here for hours. Nice layout, good bar and high ceilings.
R. B.
Lovely old school feel type of pub. Serves good grub, has friendly staff and anniversary atmosphere. There are large function rooms upstairs where there are regular groups of different types
C. M.
Don't normally go to this style of pub that often but friendly staff and sell my favourite beer which can be hard to find on draft.
J. E.
Exactly what a ‘local pub’ should be. Wide range of real ales, lagers and ciders. Non-alcoholic ones too if needed. Friendly bar staff and customers alike. Would happily come back even making a detour out of the city centre.
X. W.
An excellent Victorian pub tucked away from the central crush. A staggering range of drinks and relative proximity to public transport make it a great place to start a night out. There are lots of nooks and crannies to tuck into with your pint, and some marvellous original Victorian tile work and decoration. Considering this was derelict two years ago, it's an absolute jewel now for authentic pub and ale fans.
S. E.
Wicked pub, darts and cracking beer 🤘
J. T.
Well done Will and the team for providing refreshments at the Woody on the reopening of pubs. I thought it all worked out nicely whilst I was there.
S. T.
Great pub. A must stop if you're in Birmingham! The landlord knows his beer and the staff are friendly. Tucked a bit out of the city centre but still a good stop. They were we runner-up for pub of the year
M. E.
Stumbled across this cosy little pub while pit looking for food. Unfortunately they had no kitchen at the time but we decided to stop by for a drink. A great range of ales, welcoming staff and a lovely vintage atmosphere. A refreshing little find in a busy city.
m. s.
Nicely restored pub, saved from demolition. Next door to the original Birmingham rail terminus, which will be incorporated into the HS2 development. Lovely preserved interior, with separate drinking areas, and a nice outside area. Decent range of changing cask ales, and great value pub grub
T. M.
Amazing pub, good food and really nice staff!
D. B.
A brilliant example of a skillfully restored Victorian pub 10 minutes from Moor Street Station. Excellent draught ales, ciders and all the usual fayer including a hot food menu.
G.
A great pub with plenty of choice. Good food at reasonable prices. Will gladly go back when in that part of town as a was last week.
B. W.
Good old fashioned Victorian pub with suitable period atmosphere. Decent selection of drinks complimented by an interesting menu. Generally friendly staff, willing to help you with your drink and food selections. The Woodman burger strongly recommended! Only for the brave!!!
L. P.
Really well kept beers, with things changing all the time, fantastic variety! Traditional interiors mixed with modern attitude to a late 90s emo soundtrack, love it! Daily papers on the bar for all to read 👍
c.
A great pub with plenty of choice. Good food at reasonable prices. Will gladly go back when in that part of town as a was last week.
A. L. S.
Great pub, great food at a cheap price and a friendly atmosphere. Doesn't seem to get too busy either so good for a quiet drink and a meal.
S. J.
Excellent traditional pub located next to the spot where the new HS2 station is being built, excellent ales and a very knowledgeable bar manager
N. H.
Nice little Real Ale pub. Popular with BCU students and staff. Castle Rock is available on tap here. The pub occasionally hosts public lectures and live music.
A. R. R.
Great pint and friendly staff
G.
Really enjoyed a swift pint in here on Saturday night. Was a really friendly pub and the children were welcome and allowed to play darts. Very nice atmosphere too.
F. T.
While working out of BCU @ Millennium Point for the day (short walk to here) I visited with a group of 8 colleagues. Service was very friendly and helpful. There was a good selection of food (including good vegetarian options) which arrived promptly to no complaint. Will visit again.
L. G. C.
Nice chicken breast Burger with a local ale
P. L.
Visiting ThinkTank but did not want to eat there - limited range. Saw this pub as we qued up in the morning. Sign outside said families welcome - 2 kids (7 and 2 years old) and a pushchair easily accommodated. So tried it for lunch.
Staff were very friendly, place had lots of vistorian charm and the food was great and reasonable prices - good kids menu. They do take out too.
Don't normally do reviews but was so happy with the experience (as were the whole family) that I've gone out of my way to do so - that says it all.
i. s.
Fine pub top ales served selected lagers and ciders. Always quality an well worth a look. Great food as a bonus. Thanks for being a great pub.
S. S.
A great place for a pint on a sunny day. The outdoor seating, although a little cramped, is fantastic. It usually ends up overflowing onto the large adjacent playing field, which is lovely!
K. B.
One of my fav, pubs that I would use much more often if I could but I do not like going into town much. Good staff, food and atmosphere and always an interesting row of pumps.
H. M.
Great atmosphere, great food and even greater beers. If you're into architecture, classic pubs, ale, original spaces or relaxed atmospheres it's well worth a visit if you're in town.

It's been about a year since we last visited the woodman. And what a difference. It's gone from a quiet unbusy pub, to a vibrant, popular pub. With live music and still a good section of real ales

Very traditional boozer. This is what pubs used to be like before faux redevelopment. Mix of real ale fans and students. Decent range (10 handpumps) of well kept beer. Directly next door to the old Curzon Street Station, the historic terminus for the original London to Birmingham rail line. Worth a detour.
A. T.
