Reviews of Camelford Arms

Oh my goodness!! The food is AMAZING!! It’s without doubt the best roast I have ever eaten. Staff are attentive and friendly, atmosphere is great. We watched the six nations rugby while consuming our mega roast. Cannot fault it. Highly recommended this place, loved it!
C. T.
Found this place on the Web searching for Sunday roasts. Award winning and the Queen has popped in.
They are now serving the Xmas menu. Tried to book for 1pm full, so we got in at 3pm. Turkey roast. Came quickly. Only £14.90. Huge plate turkey, roast potatoes Brussels carrots. Red Cabbage. Ordinary Cabbage. Yorkshire pudding, parsnip shavings, mashed swede, Cauliflower and Gravy. My partner had the beef. Only thing missing we the pigs in blankets and stuffing. Not a problem as there was a large amount of other food. Tasty. Very nice. I rate it as a good solid 10.
J. S.
An excellent service, choice of drinks, an excellent food, great staff.

Stumbled upon this place, after looking for a proper local Brighton bar. Surprised this little gem of a pub was empty on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Excellent selection of ales and lagers. Food looks pretty good, although I didn’t order any. They serve a lovely pint of Sussex Best. The sort of place I can imagine coming to for a quick couple and then end up staying until closing time.

We were in Brighton for the day and where looking for somewhere dog friendly and doing food. Found the Camelford Arms - what a gem! Friendly staff, Water and treats offered to our dog without needing to ask, amazing food - huge portions and lovely locals who made us feel welcome. Wished it was our local 😁

Eat here 22/01/22 Had a fantastic meal Large portions on hot plates. Amazing Staff thanks Sophiea. Infact it was so good we went back the next day for the roast! Very large portions of high quality food thanks we will be back.
I. S.
Lovely pub on a quiet street in a rather busy area of Kemptown. The food was tasty, the interior inviting and the staff were welcoming and attentive. I would go back here again.
C. (.
Lovely pub, great selection of beers etc. Warm cosy atmosphere... Sadly a hen do rocked up and it became a screaming cesspit.
Would absolutely revisit and spend a lovely evening having a few chilled beers.

I had a rib eye steak dinner and a pint, the meal was huge and well presented for £20, I can highly recommend the food here and if I ever return to the area will definitely visit this quaint little pub once more!
J. F.
Traditional, small, town pub situated just off Brighton seafront in Kemptown Close to the pier and Sealife centre, staff friendly and helpful...no children's licence though which could be a problem if you are a family
N. M.
Great grub and no skimping on the portions either. 😋
M. Q.
Food at the Camelford is so good! Had their all day breakfast before which is huge and great value for money but their Chilli is BANGING! 10/10
G. T.
The food was very nice and the waiter who served me the drink had a very good smile. In a nutshell,I enjoyed to eat and drink in this pub.
B. V.
Really good value for money! Great traditionnal pub.
We had food which was well served. We had a fish and chips and a club sandwich for £27.50.
The people are very nice and welcoming.
l. z.
Loved it! Had the best ham and cheese baguette ever with wonderfully fresh salad vegetables on the side. Excellent service. Will definitely return there when I am next in Brighton.

Brilliant Sunday roast, very tasty, would definitely recommend 👍
Friendly pub with nice staff.
N. S.
Very enjoyable meal, with massive helpings😄!
Friendly, helpful, staff.
Only downside was no fruit crumble or jam rolypoly for dessert🤔
N. B.
Cozy pub with welcoming, friendly staff and very yummy tasty food ( generous serving too )
C. T.
I have been with my husband a nymber of times now and the staff are always very friendly and welcoming.
The food is always amazing especially their home made pies.
Tonight we had a dessert, which was a Chocolate Orange Torte with posh Vanilla ice cream and it was incredible.
Would heartily recommend to anybody to visit.

Alistar and Tony work hard to give you pub with not only great food but also great beers / wines etc.
We had dinner on the 1st Wed of the governments eat out scheme and it’s fair to say it caught the kitchen on the hop.
Yes we had to wait longer than we would like but both Alistar and Tony looked after us with a free drink to two and couldn’t apologise enough.
In reality it doesn’t matter as the food was amazing and tasted out of this world.
It was steaming hot and full of taste.
So top tips...
1. Book a table
2. Check what time the kitchen is closing
3 They have a great quiz on a Thursday
4. Everyone is welcome especially dogs

Another great visit to this Pub. Friendly team, delicious food and very welcoming all round. The Sunday roast remains one of the best.
A. H.
Lovely pub, good people serving you, went there twice and both times were looked after by different people with the same standard.
J. C.
Local pub oozing with relaxed coolness. Crowd is young professional types coming off the train (DFLs). Staff are friendly and the atmosphere is great. Beautiful garden out the back, perfect in the summer and heaters for the winter. Food is good as well, everything fresh and decent ingredients. Allergies and dietary requirements well catered for.
a. t.
Fabulous pub with food. We went twice during our stay in Brighton. Full marks to the manager for his bar staff - they are charming, two lovely French girls in the evening and a cheeky chappie at lunchtime. Food is great here, but you won't need to eat again for a few hours. Large portion, beautifully cooked and well presented.
A. L.
Dropped in specifically for Sunday roast during our trip to Brighton. Service was friendly and the pub was super cosy on a chilly day. The Sunday Roast is a huuuuge plate (managed to tuck it away nicely, thanks) and everything was just fantastic. Love love love. Also when we were there (October), they also had mulled wine (or cider?) that was tasty and fortified us for a cold walk around town.

LGBTQ+ Bare pub, relaxed atmosphere, meeting place. No disabled access, no disabled toilets
A. F.
Very friendly and helpful. Amazing food! Was with my best friend who I've not seen in 2 years.
m.
Super Brighton pub just 30 yards back from Marine Drive with great food. Some meals have a drink included making good value.
W. E.
Stunning Sunday roasts, friendly attentive staff, great Sussex Best and even better Bordeaux. Dog friendly, chilled customers - if I could give it 6 stars I wouldn’t hesitate.
S. “. D.
Enjoyed the music and the decor in the pub. The bartender brought some water out for the dogs and gave them some treats. Friendly. The food was lovely too! Lovely place :)
S. B.
Good location for a group catch up! Good food! Service was ok, but some drinks were a bit flat
D. B.
Always a fantastic experience, as a pub and as a restaurant. It does both SO well.
G. C.
Brilliant pub, lovely food .
Excellent staff.

A "must do" when I'm in Brighton food, service atmosphere all amazing
H. D.
Apart from the drinks being expensive, nearly £12. For 2 drinks, everything was great, very hospitable bar staff, food was gorgeous.
R. S.
Really good food with huge portions, nice place to eat in! Lovely staff.
J. W.
Absolutely amazing food and service. Just simply delicious and fantastic value for money. Such wonderful staff. Off the beaten track, but well worth a visit.
A. M.
Went for Sunday lunch with my brother and his family. Massive portions for the roast with numerous vegetables.
F. P. T. (.
Always a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere , attracting an open-minded and mix clientele .
From small gather with friends, drinks with your Daddy wearing leather outfits to a DELICIOUS AND GENEROUS PLATES dished with care and in the right temperature and certainly THE BEST GASTRO PUB FOOD & SUNDAY ROAST served in Brighton . Which we try hard not to be defeat by the quantity, but certainly spoiled by its freshness and quality at all time ! Book in advance or arrive early to avoid disappointments
J. H.
Nice friendly pub, the traditional fish and chips were amazing, the plaice and chips very tasty.
F.
Good roast, nice staff, selection of beers a bit too small
R. W.
Friendly atmosphere, great and generous food and a decent selection of beer and wine. Sunday roasts, especially the beef rib, are succulent and warming.
A. H.
What an amazing bar and staff. The atmosphere here was electric and the music was brilliant. It made a lock down night out really normal in a covid secure environment.
B. L.
This is a must stop for any Brighton visit. Love this place - the locals, excellent and fun staff, good vibe atmosphere and great food. Great steak and ale pie (came back the next day for it again). This is fun energetic place. Sunday roast and raffle is a must do.
L. S.
Great food, crazy portions and dog friendly! Fab place and nice staff.
s. H.
Lovely staff, great food, and soooooo much of it!!
J. B.
Great food and atmosphere. Can be quieter than nearby gay bars, which is sometimes welcome
P. S.
Am here now, food really good, tasty, plenty of it and good price, beer excellent, music good, what more do you need? Glad I walked out of the centre of town.
J. R.
Chilled Relaxing bear gay pub. Great food. Friendly bar staff.
A. B.
Excellent meal food was superb, staff were very friendly definitely highly recommended
A. L.
Food was great and very friendly staff. We will be back 👍
B. D.
Been living up the road for many years but never been till last Sunday for a roast as recommended to me by my cousin. It is huge with many elements, I usually clean my plate and the rest of the other half' s but not this time! The lamb melted in.the mouth beef was good too. A good sign is all the reserves tables! Staff all very friendly and good service too.
E.
Good food, decent service (the wait was a bit long), and big portion.
B. B.
Food is amazing; just be warned that the portions are HUGE for the lunch lunch...
D. B.
Very good Thursday evening, sat at a small table by the bar. All abided by Govt guidelines, staff served drinks at tables, masks worn when moving around pub. Good atmosphere and very friendly staff. Enjoyed the quiz (don't usually play pub quizes). Husband was intoxicated with alcohol, so he enjoyed himself, even meeting the dog who barked at him.
All out at 10pm.
Oveall very enjoyable social evening, will definitely be returning.
We didn't eat at the pub but food looked very yummy & large portions. May have to try the food on next visit.
A. T.
Best pub in Brighton..great food ..Good beer ..friendliest staff..why go anywhere else ??
P. J.
Always welcoming, only thing was the tables were very sticky!!
R.
Chilled, friendly staff and great food. The ABBA playlist was a bonus!
P. H.
Service is great and the fish and chips are deeelicious. Only criticism is too much salad on the plate.
T. F.
Food is great, especially Sunday roast
B. M. R.
Good range of beers and wines and spirits and very clean and welcoming. Food in terms of quality and quantity great! Very popular for its Sunday roast and important to book a table in advance. Traditionally a gay Bear pub, it now caters for all sexualities and customers happily mix at its tables.
J. B.
Oh my sweet Jesus. Simply amazing Sunday lunch! We had chicken which was moist (yes I said -that- word MOIST) and the nicest touch for me was the landlords wishing us well and having a chat with us as we left. The plate was full (I mean really full). Worth every penny and I can't believe it's taken me so long to have a Sunday roast here. See you guys again real soon! (Sorry no pics, too busy chatting while eating!)
C. C.
Great pub with good music choice after the England game. Would definitely recommend. Pub owner a really sound guy as well. 10/10
O. M.
Lovely atmosphere, great choice of drinks, really dog friendly as well
I. L.
Good local pub. 5 for Sunday lunch and what I had was lovely but I feel a chicken leg is not enough for Sunday lunch especially at the price point of £14.95. My friends beef and pork portions were very good. A pitty as have always had a good meal in the past. We did mention and the team member apologised.
S. s.
Fantastic food, great prizes, lovely staff. Thank you.
B. M.
I absolutely love this place, the staff are polite and attentive. The food is superb, simple ingredients cooked beautifully, and huge (and I do mean HUGE) portions. My wife and I are new to the area, and discovering this place has made us feel immediately at home. Whether you are gay or straight, go there. It really is what Brighton is all about!
K. K.
I have bumped in to this pub during my little break in Brighton. The staff is nice and policte werry welcoming. Food served looks and tastes very good it is the place to come back to.... Thank you for a couple of great evenings.
J. W.
Four of us went into this establishment twice while on a short break. Between us we had 7 different dishes and all were top notch, especially the nightly specials. I would highly recommend this spot for food and drinks. The staff were very friendly as were the few dogs that were present as it is dog friendly. Would go back here if ever in Brighton again.
D. M. W.
Excellent big Big breakfast. Yum is the word. No photos but highly graded food.
g. t.
Great food great service, dog friendly.
S. H.
Lovely atmosphere and great effort to decorate for forthcoming Halloween. I picked this pub due to the wide variety of food on offer for the group attending and everyone was was very pleased with their choice. Huge portions excellent value, somewhere I'll definitely be going back to!
S. F.
This is truly one of the best pubs in Brighton. Always immaculate super friendly staff and plenty of space. And dog friendly to. Have always enjoyed coming here and great selection wine beer and a super food menu. This is one if not the best of Brighton
j. n.
Only popped in for lunch so the pub wasn't that busy but the food more than made up for the quietness.
Huge burgers with plenty of proper chips and my steak and ale pie was packed with meat.
The mash and veg were made perfectly and along with a well kept pint of a local breweries pale ale it was one of the best pub meals I've had in a long time..
G. G. -. A.
Great service ! The manager and the owner just formidable people that know how the catering business should be ! Simple food well executed . No gimmicks . Hearty and great ingredients. The roast chicken is amazing and so are the rest ! Including the nut roast . Next time I will try the vegetarian Wellington. Beautiful atmosphere . Great for families. Really buzzy! Definitely my new local from now on. Credit to Alistair and his team. Keep it up guys!
D. F.
We had the most incredible veggie roast dinners today! There was a bit of a wait but to be honest it was totally worth it as the portion size was gigantic (could probably feed a family of 4 if you bought dessert - no jokes!)
Very wide selection of drinks too and exactly as their website says, warm and friendly.
Also if you like dogs there were about a million in there 😍
B. B.
Good food if a bit pricey. Quiz was fun. French female staff member lovely, friendly and helpful but witnessed a male staff member being very rude, completely unnecessarily, to another group of customers who dared borrow a stool from an empty table. Clearly an unspeakable crime. We would have left if that had been us. So downgraded from one star.

Popped in Tuesday evening 15th November and had chicken pie with chips and mushy peas. This was easily one of the best pub meals I have ever had. The pie was great with proper pastry sides - not the usual cop out of a bowl of filling with a pastry lid like so many pubs. Excellent huge chunky chips and a generous portion of mushy peas. It was so good in fact, that I decided to return the next day (Wednesday 15th evening) with friends. HOWEVER... this proved to be somewhat embarrassing. Whilst the pie was of the same high standard, the chips appeared to be the dregs from the bottom of the bag. Overcooked and very small with lots of sharp crispy bits. The mushy pea portion was half the size of what I had been served the night before. I'm assuming it was a different chef on that night? Such a shame they can't give a consistent food offering. If I had only eaten there on the Tuesday, I would have given 5 stars.
N. H.
Cosy pub with a nice friendly atmosphere and staff. Has a good selection of beers, wines and spirits. The food is good and usually big portions. A good place to meet for a drink and a good place to stay for a few more. A great smart gay pub in Brighton frequented by gays and straights alike.
R. B.
Great pub in the Kemp Town area. Just a couple of pints for me from the Harvey's brewery. Good bitter increasingly hard to find. The food looked great and is obviously very popular. Very friendly staff.
L. S.
Great customer service, excellent food. Would recommend.
T. C.
What a great little find. Ever had that debate of Sunday roast not having enough gravy or too much? Not an issue here when you get your own gravy boat 😊 and what an amazingly cooked good sized roast. Will have to come back again. Be warned though tables are at a premium and many reserved, don't miss out though and have it up at the bar. Big thumbs up 👍
J. S.
A very dog friendly pub. Great Sunday roast dinners, huge portions and the veg is cooked to perfection (I hate over cooked or rock hard veg). Very polite and helpful staff, nothing is too much trouble. I never give 5 stars (in case I find something better ;-) ) but this was very close.
S. R.
Great backstreet pub with a traditional feel and friendly staff.
D. D. R.
Very cozy pub in town. Nice food. I would have a lot more fun and would stay longer if the drinks weren't ridiculously expensive. Unfortunately it is not an affordable pub and the prices can be close to the ones in London.
Around £7 for a double gin and tonic... No... No this is not London.
J. K.
Best pride time ever xx Great atmosphere Great music, best bar staff 👍xx
L. R.
I went in New Year about 21:00pm. The staff girl who attended us was lovely and nice but there was another staff that I found him a bit rude in the way he spoke to us. He made us feel unwelcome in the way he treated us. He was an older staff with Grey hair with an injury in his righ leg. Hopefully he changes his attitude to future customers if not this pub will have a bad reputation. Being New Year was not too busy after 22:30 and perhaps the lack of welcome is why.
Prices are average - ok to be Brighton. I wouldn't come back if I see that bartender again.

This is the first pub we walked in to in brighton and we couldn't have asked for a warmer welcome. Everyone in there was lovely and chatty. Staff were more than accomodating and their food portions..... Well... They are HUGE!!!!! Really great food and decor.
I. G.
Went to this pub because of good reviews. Overall, an OK experience. Staff where fine & food looked great that other visitors had. In may case I had a burger that had a burnt bun (i'm talking charcoal). I can only think the chef knew but served it anyway (tut tut). I didn't send the food back as the rest was OK & more than enough and we already waited a while. I just left it to show the bar staff...who didn't even care it seamed when the plates were collected. I did say 'that cant be eaten' but got ignored or wasn't heard correctly. Either way it couldn't be missed.. The food I can forgive, but customer service on this occasion poor(Hence 4*).So for this reason I probably wont visit again. The food on other tables really did look fantastic so don't let my experience put you off.
J. C.
Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff. Decent range of beers and spirits. Large meals at good prices. Look for their Mon-Wed meal and drink special. The staff definitely pull in repeat business from those living in the area!
P. D.
Relaxed, friendly and attitude free pub.
Attentive service. Generously served pleasant pub food.
Sunday roasts are excellent, good value for money, great nut roast for vegetarians but beware the place gets packed by 1300.
A must on the Brighton gay circuit.
R. B.
First time at this gem of a pub in Brighton just off the sea front. Charming decor, friendly staff & a quirky garden with heaters (which is where we were sat).
Went in for Sunday Roast after finishing the Brighton Half Marathon today... Best pub roast I've ever had! Enormous portions (I ate the lot) but if you can't finish, they're very accommodating and provide doggy bags to take your leftovers with you :)
Also a dog friendly pub & provided dog biscuits free to our little dog.
Great pub can't fault it & will definitely go again :)
a. m.
Great service, the food was really good, nice place away from the main part of Brighton.
A. C.
Very nice friendly bar with no attitude, cosy and warm with open fires. Loved it in here but the omelette was a little under cooked but still a very nice meal. Service was excellent and so was the drinks selection.
B. D.
One of the best looking pubs in Brighton.
Staff are friendly and service is good. Drinks range is pretty middle of the road, but with a decent ale selction and food is quite something else.
Clearly labelled as a gay bar, but I think "straight friendly" would also suffice. Recommended.
J. M.
Clean, lovely bar staff, great food. Sunday roasts aren't cheap but huge plate with lots of food and plenty of variety. Happy to cater for vegans
D. B.
Have a lot of time for this boozer. Well maintained, drinks were decent and there were some decent different choices that were pleasant. Its a bit prices for a pint bit its worth it. The food menu is good quality as well, bar staff are pleasant and welcoming.
P. D.
A great pub in Brighton, my only criticism is that, whilst they close at 11pm during the week, the staff start cleaning up the bar too early and it makes it a little uncomfortable. The customers make a good atmosphere when it is busy.
D. A.
Very friendly, clean, and a great atmosphere. Would definitely visit again. We were all made to feel very welcome. Xx the bar staff even let us see the spurs footie score on their iPad! 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️
M. V.
Popular with the "hairy set" which includes myself... The food is excellent, proper man portions... If you're here at lunchtime you'll probably only want a sandwich for dinner! Friendly staff and fun music selection... "Jingle Bell Rock" in August lol! Don't worry, the barman soon changed it!
J. F.
Surprisingly pleasant pub, generally not full of drunk people. Decent selection of drinks and apparently good food, although I've not tried it yet.
S. C.
Mid week meal and drink deal £9.90.
Now I normally stay clear of these deals as you know your not going to get the best. But I thought I would give it a go, and I was very pleasantly surprised any alcohol drink(except champagne) and a choice of 4 different meals. Went for the cheese 🍔 which was hand made and succulent.
Had nachos for 1 as a starter again very nice.
All in all nice food pleasent staff. .
K.
Great pub, lovely food and very generous portions!
J. E.
Very friendly pub, went with a large group of friends and they were able to correctly prepare all our orders quickly, the food was good and hot plus great value for money. I could highly recommend this quaint little pub to most people though the loud music made it hard to hear my friends.
