Reviews of The Black Lion
A. E.
Had a great evening in the lanes finding new bars we had never been in. This place has a Great selection of drinks, the music was a good mix of old and new feel good pub tunes. Very cosy feel.
Great atmosphere and will definitely be back.
s. F.
Great food but loud. Good options for food with good vegan choices. Lots of burgers this is the best part and they taste really good. They also have good sitting outside however there was a very noisy group of people which slightly annoying. This may not be there fault but the where shouting and pretty drunk and the staff did not ask them to quite down at all when this was distributing a lot of customers just trying to eat and this was at only 6 pm if it was like 9 onwards to be expected but not when customers just want to eat dinner. It's really as shame they had to loose a star for this also dessert options could have being more as there was only one.
S. E.
Lovely staff, beautiful historical building on the outside - nice little beer garden.... the atmosphere is very busy, bawdy, open plan and touristy. Not the pubs fault. It's in a very popular location - I just wouldn't recommend on the weekends given the clientele.
S. H.
Had a decent night out. Friendly staff, relaxed vibe, great music...lots of 90s and naughties tunes I hadn't heard in ages. Reasonably priced drinks too. Would have been 5 stars but the toilets left a lot to be desired towards the end of the night. I would recommend this venue.
K. A.
We had drinks in the black lion after our works belated Christmas do! We were so impressed with the live music too xx
Great band , we didn't want to leave x
Highly recommended can't wait to go back!
J. A.
Really nice pub, good atmosphere and good option of booze!! But please sort out the womens toilets, they're a state, doors don't lock and just generally grim.
M. H.
Went for Sunday lunch with family.
Food and service was great apart from you cant ask your server or go to the bar for drinks
You have to scan a code on your table and use an app. I was sat next to the bar and the app was frustrating with so many menus especially for drinks with mixers.
Great meal all the same
J. S.
Great atmosphere and not too badly priced for Brighton. Shame about giving away our table within 15mins and not being able to serve food to us outside.
L. (.
The best pub in Brighton! The music was amazing and the staff very friendly! Thanks for this night :D
S. R.
I love it nice music as always.
Always busy especially at weekend
In my opinion best pub in Brighton
Great stuff last week I lost my phone and the stuff kept safe for me.
Many Thanks
Sam

Great afternoon with friends at the Black Lion in the outside seating area, nice and warm with the heaters but don't bother with the sharing platters 3 slices of baguette for a full camambere doesn't cut it guys and neither do the all on nachos at £17
Food overpriced and poor quality especially the sharers but the drinks were fine and atmosphere good hence the 4 stars
Improve your menu if you want to charge a premium
T. K.
Felt like a tourist trap. Very busy and loud. The staff weren’t very friendly. Beer list was fair at best. Good for a pint and some people watching but not my favorite place.
M. G.
Good selection of drinks and food. Atmosphere was really good. Please spend some money on your toilets, pretty disturbing.
I. F.
Historical pub located on the aptly named Black Lion Street. Unique design from the outside resembling the fishing huts you find in Hastings. It is however quite modern on the inside.
E. S.
Basic but good food. Were accommodating to kids and a dog and a party of 11. Not sure gastropub is the right name but we had a nice time and the bill was reasonable on price
Cannot fault the customer service to accommodate such a large family table without prior notice. Would visit again.
D. H.
Good atmosphere, friendly but very slow service. Good range of vegan options. The vegan roast was fine, but very vegetable-heavy (vegetables in pasty, with a side of vegetables), and no cauliflower cheese or Yorkshire pudding. The Moving Mountains vegan hotdog was good, but a little pricey at £13. Overall, worth a visit
L. A. K. O.
Black Lion has a nice chill vibe, only wish the sound system was better(needs a sub and cones on the tops are all worn and burnt, sounds like it's clipping all the time), other than that, bar staff are great, security are respectful and effective. All round good time out :)
x. s.
Amazing pub with welcoming staff, their roast pork belly was second to none!
T. C.
I ordered the roast strip loin of British beef, which was “served with rosemary roast potatoes, a selection of seasonal vegetables, lashings of gravy, and a homemade Yorkshire pudding”. You can also ask for additional gravy! Yuuuum.
c. j.
Food was very good. Chicken burgers, fish and chips and a burger. The food was well presented and plentiful. Bravo black lion you nailed it. Our kids were very happy.
L. B.
Good vibes. I adopted someone because we shared a taste in music. Grand atmosphere. Shots galore. Fab place
P. D.
Quite pricey for a pub, but always lovely atmosphere.
K. B.
Called in on the way to watch wolves with my youngest daughter the food was brilliant the staff very friendly have a great Xmas and happy new year to you all kev and chloe xxx
T. M.
Friendly staff, quick service. Decent range of beers. Plenty of outdoor seating.
e. c. n.
Generous portions, tasty fish and chips, friendly upbeat staff, and good tunes in the background. I recommend
A. S.
Had a fantastic roast dinner here. Staff were happy to chat and made you feel at home. Great people and lovely little pub full of history and character
m. t.
A weekday night visit for a latish drink, seemed quite empty and gloomy, then found most people were in the Beer garden which was quite lively. Drinks were OK
R. W.
Lovely little pub which starts open late and has a nice beer "garden" (alley). I had a couple of points of the local beer and it was very nice.
M. L.
Nice pub, good drink selection, decent food. Good music - although we were there during the day, they seem to have a lot of hip hop in the evening. Catering for quite a young customer - mainly late teens to late twenties.
The place has a pleasant vibe. It has a kind of shabby chic. If you're stopping off to take a break from trawling around The Lanes this place provides a welcome respite.
J. K.
A fantastic modern pub with a great selection of drinks. It's a log bigger on the inside than it looks from the street
T. W.
I was recommended to head here for Sunday Lunch and delighted I took the advice.
Lamb was succulent, portions a little large for my ability, but plates not overloaded, roasties to die for and well seasoned vegetable medley along with a superbly balanced gravy.
Puddings, limited in choice, but well presented - the hazelnut and chocolate tart was again carefully measured sweetness to sharp.
The wine list is limited and only one champagne which was not available, leaving a Cote du Rhone which was a good value substitute though red and not fizzy white.
Very busy, but each service given a generous two hours at the table.
Gnotti, my companion, an approaching 14 year old Pekingese was lavished with attention, which he of course enjoyed.
Very good value - £75.00 for three courses and wine
I pass on the recommendation I was given.
D. T.
Very nice food and drink. Staff helpful and friendly. Not too cheap, though.
P. C.
The Black Lion appears to becoming my regular when in Brighton!
This was my second visit and once again the food and service was on point! This time round I had fish and chips and it was superb! Who knew this classic British food could taste so good!
Unfortunately, on both occasions the food took a rather long time to arrive, but when you see how busy this place gets it's hardly surprising, and wasn't ever long enough to complain! Will definitely be coming back!
K. M.
Lovely roast dinner on Sunday, and really good friendly service. We'll be back.
L. L.
the oldest pub in brighton is already too fancy, but everything else nice
R. B.
Personally my self liked 🙃
Friendly staff, exceptional atmosphere, good taste, good price 👌
P. S.
They've made some improvements to the place, and it is much nicer in here with a great garden. Drinks are slightly expensive and the staff were nice when we went. Good cozy atmosphere with a varied mix of people.
S. F.
The garden was too busy to sit in so so out at the front but lots of scaffolding, probably better inside which looked nice but it was a hot day.
C. M.
Probably the best chips I've ever had - exactly how chips should be done, amazing. Fish was out of this world too, big thumbs up
K.
Nice pub, friendly staff. Guinness was not perfect though. As well as the taste, it wasn't served in a Guinness glass.
W. H.
An outstanding Sunday lunch.
Fantastic beers and the lunch was just amazing.
Excellent service and a brilliant team behind the bar.
An excellent pub. Recommended very highly.
C. T. R.
Great bunch of staff , Bobby in particular really helpful couldn’t of been more lovely! :)
k.
Friendly staff, cosy atmosphere, the Pork belly dish was fab!
M. T.
I didn't mean to write a bad review of this place I meant to write that for the local carpark 😂
The undisputed king of pubs in Brighton. Wonderful staff and fantastic music and beer selection.
M. B.
Really great beef roast with a great selection of red wine.
Friendly staff apart from the one waitress who asked for tips.
Really didn't put me off of the experience as this is a solid pub and the grub really held it's own. Nice veg selection and the sides were totally worth getting.
F. S.
Lively bar, nice staff quick service. Good mix of ages.
M. T.
Great Sunday Roast, a very interesting exterior and a very big inside area. The food was really good and a very good standard. Gets busy at peak periods but well worth visiting. Excellent Covid standards and very friendly staff.
S. D.
Lovely Pint & very polite staff!
M. G.
Excellent Recommendation on the IPA and tasty food. Laid back atmosphere and staff.
L. W.
I just love that place. Nothing fancy but extremely nice staff and always good night out with friends.
B. A.
Nice atmosphere. Good food. Great music.
B. A.
Good atmosphere but no table service so waited a long time for a drink
C. K.
Good atmosphere and outside/inside seating area which had heaters for chilly evenings.
S. G.
Best roast dinner I have had for years, except for my finder's obviously and if course mums. Brilliant staff and great atmosphere.
H. P.
The most amazing roast dinner I've had in years. The pork was to die for and as for the sweets! Lovely cosy atmosphere. Friendly staff. Will definitely be back for another chilled relaxed afternoon 😊
S. G.
Love this pub, great atmosphere.
J. R.
Great location, fantastic history. Enjoyed nice cool drinks in the sun, great service.
P. W.
A great location, but very limited selections at the moment. One big gripe would be the lack of descriptions of the wines and beer as they are not well known, common drinks, which would not be bad if there was any clue what they are... The menu doesn't even say IPA or pale ale etc.
And I grew a beard waiting for delivery of our drinks.
I have added a star from my original three as the restaurant responded and said they will add a little more of a description. The fact they individually responded (not just some standard "thanks for your comments, blah blah blah) is a credit to the owners/management.
J. E.
Friendly staff, nice venue and pretty beer garden. A nice place to stop after strolling through The Lanes
c. d.
Rude and unnecessarily aggressive bouncer, didn't let us turn our chairs to watch the England Vs Scotland game, kicked off of our table as our drinks had only just arrived. Experience was redeemed by the rest of the staff.
E. L.
App easy to use, cool sheltered beer garden. Service quick
N. O.
Absolutely amazing Vegetarian Sunday Roast! We came to Brighton for the day and had planned to come here for Sunday dinner, we just made it before serving was finished, so so pleased we didn’t miss out. Everything was cooked to perfection and so tasty! we waited around 45 mins for our food which is very reasonable and it was more than worth the wait, We shall definitely be returning. Door hostess was very lovely and helpful too, ordering via the online app wasn’t as bad as what we have seen some other reviewers have mentioned, they could do well with remembering, no one is used to this new way, not even staff who are working with it, everyone is doing their very best, which is quite clear to see. (But there’ll always be someone complaining about something.) Maybe they could focus on the fact that we can now actually go out to eat again and be social and that this business has managed to re-open after 4 months of lockdown unlike many that have had to close. Well done to all the staff at the Black Lion.
Thank you from us, Nerina & Angel.
M.
We just had a drink before the journey home. Warm cider was delicious and the house red was a nice wine. The decor and furniture were a bit basic but the place had a good atmosphere. Staff were quick to serve at the bar and they cleared the empty glasses quickly. Next time we are in Brighton, we might eat here.
J. O.
Amazing food, amazing staff and a lovely garden! The chicken burgers were amazing!
C. G.
Went on a Sunday. There were 11 of us and they did very well to accommodate us. I had the vegan roast and it was very tasty. Portion sizes were good. Pricey but worth it. Atmosphere was good and a good selection of drinks. I think we could have had more gravy but I imagine you could ask for more if needed.
H. H.
Really nice chilled out setting lovely outside space.
L.
Great covered outdoor area. Food is amazing. Had the nachos an were the best I've had.
M. D.
Sunday roast was one of the best I have ever had in a pub. A relaxed atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff. Because we were a table of 13 there was a significant wait for food to arrive which could have been better, but at least when it arrived it was hot and delicious and the staff were very understanding.
L. C.
Hands down, best roast I've had in Brighton.
C. D.
Had a great sunday lunch here with my daughter and niece who is vegan. All of us had a really enjoyable time. Food was very good' staff very helpful and fun. Setting was cool as my daughter says! Would recommend anyone to go. Will be back
P. M.
Thank you so much to an amazing security guard named Harry who took care of someone when they weren't able to take care of themselves. You're doing a wonderful job, thank you so much!
E. h.
Best Sunday Roast I've ever had!
It takes about 30-40 minutes to get your food, but it's how it should be. When you get it, it's both hot and tasty. Not too mention great presentation and lots of food! This is where I now go every Sunday and I recommend it to the max!
M. C.
We came here as we’d read online it was dog friendly, which they were. Me and my family had a great lunch. One of the best fish and chips I’ve had for a while! Great beer selection too.
A. R.
Lovely little pub, was pleasantly surprised to see vegan offerings and particularly of smoked tofu, chips and peas, really delicious.
C. M.
Nice relaxed cosy and quirky pub. Food was great and cocktails very tasty. Even did a kid-sized version of something on the adult menu. The only minor criticism was that the smell from the toilets emanated into the main pub area. Not sure if they had a problem with their plumbing at the time!
B. V.
Nice pub, friendly staff. Great atmosphere
P. G.
Great pub. Went for dinner, the starters were very tasty. The (main) chicken supreme was excellent. Avoid the mango/ passion fruit beer I'd say :)
L. C.
The pub itself is nice enough and the outside area looks very pretty with lots of ivy and fairy lights...although they could do with extending this as we ended up sitting in a far more grubby part outside. My main issue however was with the food which I didn't really think was all that. I had the pork & kale, instead of kale I got cabbage and I found the pork pretty underwhelming. Would probably go again to give it another chance as aesthetic of the pub was nice enough.
J.
Covid system in place. Wait at door. Then seated at the back of the garden, the person seating will not take your order. We were not allowed to sit at tables for four, despite other tables for four seating two. Our table has no shelter whereas others did. Order then waited 20-25 mins for a pint. The halloumi chips were lovely, but the wait and no choice on seating ensured we left. I love the fact there is a COVID system - I hate the fact you are seated (not where you would like to sit) you speak to the person only for them to direct you to a web system then have the drinks delivered by the same person, but much later.
L. M.
Lovely pub in the heart of Brighton with friendly staff and good food and our dog Tia was welcome too xx
V.
Great pub. Lively and buzzing. Seems to have really music. The choice of find was exhaustive and the service was excellent. Both bar staff and otherwise. There was good music playing too, although we were not there in a night with live music. I would say the drinks were reasonably priced.
A. H.
The Sunday roast are amazing and the service is 1st class
D. T.
Friday night, packed dance floor n that, good fun
C. D.
Great pub which is open late. Had food here once (Sunday lunch) and it was cold. Have had nachos etc before though and they have been really good though! The staff are friendly and it's reasonably priced drinks. Great atmosphere and smoking terrace is the place to be really. Lucky to get a seat in there most of the time. For Drinking, it's 4 stars, for food perhaps 3.
P. C.
Best pub roast we have all had in a long long time. Loadsss of different veg, proper joints of meat well cooked and the stuffing tater tots side were soo good👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
A. G.
Wonderful Sunday lunch & amazing atmosphere - good music, friendly staff, yummy mulled wine! Was a completely fully booked pub that still managed to accommodate us and provide us with excellent food. I had the vegan roast which was delicious & recommend!
R. F.
Very nice pub, Sunday roast was delicious although took a while to arrive. Friendly staff, friendly atmosphere, family friendly and friendly towards solo eaters too. Worth a visit while in Brighton.
T.
A nice bar with good character, it has lots option including cocktails.i did not partake in one of the cocktails but having watched one of them being made I would be convinced that they would be of the highest quality.
Grab a seat quick this place is going to get very busy.
E. A.
Nice food and really nice atmosphere. Looks small from the outside but dont let that fool you. Inside has a warm jolly pub feel and their outside beer garden has heaters and great space. One of the best pubs Ive been too.
M. T.
Quite busy when I went there on Thursday night. But they do have an outdoor area for more room to sit or stand in (good for the summertime). So, quite a big place overall. Long range of drinks too.
M. R.
Smashing brunch, lovely food and they were not shy about topping up the mimosas. Loads of outside tables and excellent service from Hayley and Luke. Lovely.
K. C.
What seemed like a little old style pub from the outside, opened into a large, modern decorated, lovely lighting pub! Usual pub food, well priced, something for everyone and quick service. Delicious chips!
Dinner for 2 under £40. Would go back!
S.
Nowhere close to my favourite pub in Brighton. It's a bit brash and lacking in charm.
But definitely hats off for serving (an excellent) Sunday roast beyond 6pm, which is when most pubs seems to stop.
S. D.
Staff fantastic. Chloe made are first visit amazing and would strongly recommend and go again .fantastic food and service
H. B.
Great pub, friendly staff and an all round good experience. Well worth a visit.👍
e. h.
Fantastic bottomless brunch on a Saturday morning here! Unique, delicious food with friendly staff and great mimosas. I would highly recommend 👌
A. F.
This is my friends usual go to. In the evenings there is a dance floor and often we stay there rather than pay for clubs. Drinks are a little pricy so if we are going 'out' we will find a cheaper place, but to dance after we love it not to meet for a chill evening the garden is lovely.
C. F.
Randomly found this pub on Google as our normal pub is closed for refurb. So glad we did as the wines by the glass are superb, cocktails are good and reasonably priced and a good selection of local craft ales and lagers. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. We ordered from the specials board the chicken, bacon & leek pie with mash and seasonal veg which was divine. The pastry was crispy and the filling was sooo tasty, mash was perfectly smooth and the glass of Gavi de Gavi went perfectly with it. My new go to pub in Brighton, thank you!
D.
When sitting outside beware of homeless people who.will hassle you for change or cigarettes. It not the staffs fault as they do all they can to remove them it just kinda ruins it when your having an in depth chat with a friend and a guy comes up asking for change. Still a great bar though!
A. B.
A very old looking English pub down the small roads of Brighton. It has a really nice garden, the staff were kins and nice. Service was quick. Prices are pretty much what you would expect in the middle of Brighton.
C. C. C.
Everything was fine, but make sure you bring an ID card. Somehow, they are not capable of accept online identification (this is XXI century, boys!)
J. R.
Food was lovely and the wait wasn't too long. We had lunch here with the eat out to help out scheme. Nice touch with the half price drinks too.
S. S.
Another brilliant staff do at the Black Lion last Friday. Food was great followed by lots of dancing. So easy to organize. Always looks great. Love the atmosphere in this place. They've really got it right...
S. H.
The most delicious roast we've ever had!!!! Wow!! So highly recommended..thank you
P. H.
Nice vibe in the pub, drinks were priced fairly, plenty of space on the three floors and the roof garden was a nice touch. Was disappointed in the standard of DJing on the roof though. A cd being played would have been better than the bad use of sound effects and poor mixing between songs.
G. E.
solid pub, good beer selection
C. “. B.
Went for a roast, damn good. Pretty impressive rustic building, gardens out back looked cool. Pretty good selection of booze too. If I had to crit I suppose the food is a bit pricey...
W. B.
Nice Pub in a great location with a great atmosphere. An excellent variety of music nights and events, and always seems busy.
It is however quite expensive, like most pubs in the area, so minus a star for that.
Oh and the food looks good too, although I haven't tried it yet.
R. H.
I really enjoy going to this Pub as everybody knows where it is. :) It has an outside area where you can smoke and the best is that there are several benches that are under cover making it possible to sit outside even in the rain. That really makes me happy as there is not a lot of places that are this well under cover. Have ate there several times before and the food was great as well making it a great place to have late lunch when you are coming back from the beach.... I think all I have to say it is a great place to hang around and definitely go there.... you will see!
B. S.
All stand alone tables in the outside tunnel need replacing or at least adjusting as they wobble like crazy spilling all the drinks. Staff are lovely though. Music was good, but far too loud.
A. S.
Good pub with nice food and live music
G.
Really nice place, a good place to hang out for a couple of beers and at about 11P.M the bar area more or less turned into a dance floor with a live DJ. There was no cover to get in and the prices were alright, ~ 4£ for a beer.
Will go here again, be early though as it gets very crowded at 10P.M.
J. W.
It was all very nice, and frankly we were just delighted to be able to finally go to the pub!
P. J.
this is my one of the fav pub. Live music is amazing here. whenever i go here its hard to take me out, ha ha.. love dancing here. Had lots of parties and made loads of memories here. They also have open area if you like to sit with friend and just chat.
A. G. (.
Lovely pub, good beers on tap, nice large seated smoking area with cover from rain and heaters, comfortable inside with good live music and clean modern toilets. Great location near the sea.
A. F.
Down side was the noise next door, not pub fault, however we don't care to much as this is our favourite pub in Brighton
A. S.
Went to Brighton to see a mate and we stopped off for Sunday lunch. The pub itself is not the biggest but it produces a nice cosy atmosphere. The food was great had to wait a little while but it was definitely worth the wait.
M. J.
Amazing food! Roast dinners were excellent, I would recommend the pork belly highly, top notch crackling! Friendly service and lovely atmosphere. The night life is pretty fun too with live music!
S. K.
A nice pub with a lovely outside/beer garden area. It gets absolutely rammed full of people on a Saturday evening though, so be prepared to use your elbows to make it to the bar if you visit at that time of the week.
A. J.
Fun night out with a great crowd. Everyone there to have a good time.
Busy but didn't have to wait ages to be served. Experienced bar staff!
V. L.
Stylish fun place, delicious beer and lovely girls barmen
R.
We ventured here after midnight on New Year's Eve, so it was rather busy. The music was first rate, but the lack of bar staff meant it was almost impossible to get a drink, and with the staff no particularly helpful, many of us gave up. Decent for a dance, but don't count on getting to the bar...
L. K.
Lots of outdoor seating that is sheltered, good for people who don't want to be inside but want to go to pubs. Good app ordering and delivery system too.
M. S.
Lovely beer garden, nice interior decoration, the alcohol is ... its alcohol there's nothing to debate here. Music was good until like 2am when they wanted to get rid of us probably 😅
B. R.
Excellent service. Delicious food with plenty of variety. Vegans included 😁
J. H. T. S. B. B.
Helpful service on the phone, but food wasn't amazing... The vegan burger was good tho. Was really loud too. Not for a quiet pint on a Saturday afternoon!
S.
Nice pub set in the Lanes, Brighton. friendly service.
S. M.
Brilliant vocal artist last night
C. W.
Only been here during the day early afternoon for lunch and a quick pint but the the food is awesome. Any time I'm down from london I always make it a point of calling n for food. Stopped off last time and had a great meal, I shared the meat plater which I would get again!! The sausage sandwich is worth a try too.
G. B.
Staff friendly and very helpful, lovely setting in the rear garden. Great evening
C. M.
Really great spot with friendly atmosphere
B. P.
Excellent pub. Great staff great atmosphere..fabulous roast dinner and because they gave me gravy in error I got a free glass wine. Brilliant service.
I. B.
Great local beers on tap, friendly staff keen to let you have a taster without us having to ask, great outdoor seating and a unique atmosphere. Well worth a visit!
S. H.
Visited for live music on Monday night's, has late night opening. Have eaten, food ok but quite expensive. Good selection of drinks. It gets packed in there, has ok outside space but very smoky. Loos not bad.
A. D.
Amazing pub. Lovely staff, brilliant atmosphere, friendly professional doormen. Great range of drinks. Love coming here!
D. W.
Great place shut to early bit to loud music plus people talk above music so hard to hear conversations but over all great place
A. S.
Overpriced burgers, no salad just a few chips. Ordered the spicy burger, it tasted sweet! And not spicy! Friendly staff but never again.
R. S.
Much bigger than you'd think, very pricey, but it is Brighton. Outside and inside areas, a bar that lights up during night as well. Only came here once, enjoyed my time there, though got a little crowded later in the evening/night, but still managed to find a place to sit.
N. F.
The black lion we passed through here as a random place while we were down south. It was a small place to be hosting as club/bar with music. The music played was had no flow at all we stayed for one drink. My review was based on the above scenario.
K. M.
Nice interior, service was friendly and drinks were good. The smell in the back of the pub was not so pleasant so we went to sit in the front of the pub.
G. A.
Good music and vibes. Very cool and relaxing venue.
A. M.
Only stayed for one drink due to it being last orders but would go back earlier next time
B. P.
Great atmosphere, fantastic beer garden, reasonable drink prices. Food prices are a bit steep but having never had the food i can't comment in whether the price is justified
W. D.
A group of six of us went for Sunday roast. Great service, friendly staff and very good food. Highly recommended 👍
L. C.
Great selection of beers, decent food and a really nice outside area. Can get a bit rowdy in the evening and bouncers can be heavy handed and rude for no conceivable reason but other than that a good boozer.
J. T.
Excellent service and meals worthy of the price. Totally recommend.
J. D.
This place is a perfect place to grab some better than average bar food for a great price. The food won't blow you out of the water but i've never had a bad dish here, very simple and basic food but the quality is always good. Great place ever!
J. M.
Very good food and good quality for the price, excellent music, but the tables are cleaned between each customer, it's a shame because this place is excellent.
b. h.
£4.50 for a pint of pepsi is a madness lol food was lovely though
F. M. F.

Nice, busy place

This is a great bar with a nice outdoor seating area that allows for a more quiet spot to chat in a group. We went on a Friday night and there was a DJ and a large presence on the dance floor.
M. S.
Late night venue with a slightly older crowd. Good mixture of seating in the garden and disco indoors. Drinks are reasonably priced.
C. R.
Nice atmosphere and great live music, food was excellent but brought main before starter it could a bit of haggling to get them to take it back and bring the starter... But a cool place
D. F.
Absolutely amazing food,fantastic service xxx
J. T.
Busy pub in a popular location. Had a Sunday roast with friends. Expect to wait for more than an hour for your roast lunch. Other than that, all good.
E. K.
Great vibe , great music .
S. A.
You can't go wrong with the black lion, really great spot. Always fairly busy, but always a table free. Great food and nice smoking area
W. D.
Wouldn't call this place a gastropub. They do food though and it's open late. It also happens to be Brighton's oldest pub though you wouldn't know from the interior. Some decent beers.
M. D.
Very nice pub, and great staff, excellent food and live music, and Fish and Chips were very good, nice big portions, and the beer was great.
H. J.
We just had drinks and garlic bread/cheesy bread but wow! Really impressed with the food....we will be back for a meal...can't wait!
D. J.
There is a cute little back area for casual drinks for groups, and the live music inside made the place somewhat lively. Drinks prices are reasonable.
J. W.
Great location and nice pub. But you ha e to order online and it is not easy to use.
A. R.
Great place for a weekend boogie, though does get very busy. Great atmosphere and good tunes. Never disappoints as somewhere to have a good night out!

N. B.
What a fantastic Pub. The service and the food was absolutely fantastic. The surroundings are stunning yet earthy, the service came with a smile and consideration and very reasonably priced.
r. d.
Lively pub. No draught beer, just lager. Wide range of age groups. Not the place for a quiet evening drink.
K. D.
Came here for dinner to catch up with friends I haven’t seen in awhile. The burgers were good and they have great nachos which is hard to find in the UK!
R. C.

Lovely beer garden for in the summer, food menu is OK, not sure about the quarter lettuce before steak, it should be shredded
S. M.

Great atmosphere, day or night - the night usually includes some pretty good djing. The food is great to, definitely give the pork belly stripes a try.
K. G.
A really nice pub to go out with friends to dance on the weekend.
The music is different and well mixed every night and covers all genres.
G. M.
Great meat plater. Would have given them 5* but a large glass of Merlot was £9.75, that's taking the p....... a bit!
N. J.
We only popped in for a drink or two but had the garlic bread and cheesy bread and was so impressed that we are going back to have a complete meal next time.
S. M.

Looks tiny and inconspicuous from the outside.
Opens out, even when packed. I haven't yet dared the cheese and pickle or dark choc and marmite ice cream.
L. D. H. G.
Pretty nice place. Nice staff. The bouncers actually seemed happy, and even had a bit of joke with us, which is not something I see often.
