Reviews of The Constant Service
F. B.
Very nice atmosphere even though the music was too loud for my taste even though I appreciate that's very subjective. Food fairly mediocre. I had the fish platter and it's not something I would have again.
J. G.
We went for a Sunday roast, our first visit since restrictions were lifted, and were pleasantly surprised by the homely atmosphere despite the obvious precautions still in evidence within the establishment. The plates were pulled high with good quality food when they were brought to us at the table, you really get your money's worth here. The greens could have done with more cooking as they were a bit hard, but that could just be down to how some folks like them that way, but the potatoes were fantastic. Well worth a booking.
C. C.
A rather poor Sunday roast with inconsistent roast potatoes - mine were hard like dark brown pebbles. My daughter's were mushy. The nut roast portion was generous, but otherwise rather average. The cauliflower cheese was overcooked and with far too much mustard in the sauce. Being a Harvey's pub the range of vegan ale was very limited, and the others said the Harvey's was adequate. The TVs showing the Seagulls vs Leeds football match were a bit intrusive. Things didn't start well with a long wait for our booked table to be vacated. We should have ordered then - it was an hour before we got any food.
S. G.
I love this pub. Friendly staff, good beers & nice environment. If you're in the area worth popping in for a pint
C. i.
A true local place in Brighton.
It is very confortable and they accept dogs.
On Sundays the serve "the Sunday roast" made of lamb or chicken or pork. It is a very tasty dish!! I strongly suggest to try it.
They have a big selection of different beers.
A. G.
Great pub with a good selection of music played via turntable at the bar...
A. Z.
Fantastic selection of Sunday roasts, but too much gravy, ask for it to be served in a pot on the side
S. B.
Not been here much but always enjoyed the atmosphere when I do. Staff are friendly and chatty. The food is lush, and the portions are very generous. Try it for yourself you won't be disappointed.
N. W.
Good selection of Sunday roasts. Taste is just fantastic and very filling .
D. W.
Great little pub, excellent food, would particularly recommend pie and a pint night on Mondays!!
P. B.
Love this pub. The food is great, good portions and value for money. The staff are very friendly and always welcome you..
T. C.
I couldn't believe the value in their Pie and Pint deal. Totally yum and naughtily big portions of quality food. I wasn't a fan of pies but now I am. We sat outside and had a quiet fun time in a lovely friendly atmosphere. AAA pub grub. Having good friends to share with always helps but seriously good nosh and a pint/wine for just 10 quid is hard to beat.
A. R. T.
Excellent local pub with great food, great snacks, great beer, great people and a turntable playing great music!
B. B.
Lovely pub. Excellent atmosphere. Great service. Locals very friendly, even though it was my first time there. Food looked good although I wasn't eating. They have a record player behind the bar and about two hundred records to choose from. They played reggae and The Beatles whilst I was there. Well kept Sussex Ales on tap and a few guest beers. Dog friendly, or was it friendly dogs? I might make it my out of London local. Cheers!
S. F.
Amazing roast dinners huge portions and such great value
I. C.
I was just visiting a friend who lives around the corner from this pub and it became my 'local' while I was there. Generally a local crowd which enhances the homely atmosphere. The décor is bright and uplifting and features local art. A nice food selection and a very nicely stocked bar. The owner and staff are very friendly and community oriented and they host good music nights. Excellent.

Great food, great service, good laugh - Matt is a wonderful barman with great customer service
J. E.
A brilliant, unpretentious (for Brighton) local pub which stands out by playing it's large collection of vinyl. Harvey's ales too. Winning.
R. F.
Fantastic value for money. Great beer, Harveys, can't go wrong.
The Sunday roasts are unbelievable. £11 for the largest portions we have ever seen. On top of this the quality was superb. We had four different roasts. The lamb, pork, beef and vegan roast were all amazing. Really great stuff and will be back soon.
F. G.
Great atmosphere and great Ales, cozy
T. W.
Terrific pub. There's always a great atmosphere, and it's always full of groups of friends enjoying the food. They play a selection of vinyls around the clock, from the vast selection behind the bar, and crucially, they show live footy (muted, FYI). It's a real gem.
M. T.
Love their Sunday roast with much gravy.
R. I.
One of my preferred pubs in Brighton, one of few that have a good range of Harvey's beers outside of Lewes. Nice little place with character and friendly atmosphere. Almost like Lewes had been transported directly into Brighton.
M. A.
Great pub, nice atmosphere and people. A lot of pubs in Brighton have been renovated and gentrified but a few gems still around. There is a nice balance of locals, people out on a week end booze up, families, friends.
S. C.
Fantastic local pub, full of character, great drinks and brilliant food - generous portions, really tasty and good value. Great record selection which they play or let you bring your own vinyl.
H. P.
On Wednesday I had a chicken burger, chicken and rice side salad cheesy chips and onion rings for lunch. This filled me up more than that and it was only 9 pound. Great place and polite staff. Definitely go for the pie
J. G.
Fantastic, really great value food! Huge delicious pies or nachos that you can't finish, for about 8 quid. Makes it one of the best value feeds in Brighton. Great Vego options. Also lovely relaxed staff and a beautiful flowery beer garden. A great find in Hanover.
D. B.
Possibly - probably - The Best Pub:
Aside to being situated in Brighton's chic'est Hanover 'village', the Number One score of this pub is its personnel. Not as frequently as we'd like, but we've being going for about 7 years. There is clearly something going right here because there appears to be such a low turnover of staff. Being a great place to work certainly spills-over the bar into generating an amazingly friendly, welcoming atmosphere. So well done to the owners for mixing that cocktail right! Plus there are subtle nuances in the Constant Service which create its rich blend. Like the über cool, vinyl revving turntable at the end of the bar and its limitlessly diverse stocks queueing to spin. The bar is well-stocked too, with cracking ciders, ales and perfectly adequate, well-chosen, wallet-friendly, wines. But then last, but by no means least comes the Sunday roasts. I'd hate to bump into the cow down a back alley that my rib of beef came from! What a monster it must have been. Yet so obviously lovingly cooked to caramelised, tender perfection. A gastronomical masterwork. This whole pub is a perfectly rhyming poem of people, caring, beer-pouring, food-purveying, wish-granting, friend-making, can't wait to go back again, harmony.
A thank you for being just that little bit too far away to be the ruin of me pub!
S. M.
Hands downs best sunday roast I've ever had. Portion are generous, so be prepared. Its definitely worth pre-booking cause it's in demand. Its has a cosy setting, and has wonderful friendly staff. This is a gem.
B. D.
If you've made it this far up Islingword, then you've definitely earnt yourself a cold one.
Fortunately this is a pub worth the stroll.
A single room bar area, that is compact, but comfortable and a nicely appointed beer garden is about it, but what it lacks in space it makes up for in atmosphere.
Staff are friendly, food is good (Sunday roasts recommended) and prices certainly reasonable.
The Constant Service closes at midnight...
M. D.
Brilliant place, lovely bar staff and a great atmosphere. Sit back and enjoy the selection of vinyl they play. The food is delicious, the Sunday roast is the best I've ever had.
C. C.
As I write I'm drinking a very nice of pint surrounded by yards of shelved vinyl LPs and fun but unforced (not self-consciously 'quirky') pub memorabilia, and it seems very friendly. There is a big screen with the cricket on, so the sports tv might put some people off - but though I'm no cricket fan I will certainly be coming back (when the music's playing).
D. Q.
Great choice of beer and the Sunday roast we had was delicious and gigantic. Good Vege and vegan options too. Staff were friendly and service was quick
S. E.
A little off the beaten track in deepest darkest Hanover. Nice place, bit quiet without the DJ on, bur if thats your thing you'll love it.
Probably even more if you like second wave/2tone.
A. B.
Great pub, often with a classic record spinning on the back bar. However, they've stopped selling Dinkel Acker, so cannot get 5 stars now!
A. W.
friendly vibe, tastefully done out inside, huge portion of tasty roast dinner, got a bit busy and full of football supporters as Brighton were playing, but apart from that I'd definitely go back to eat or just to have a drink
l. s.
Great Pub, the locals and staffs are welcoming and not snobbing the new faces walking through the door. Haven't eaten here yet but soon will give a try
L. K.
Lovely, small, local pub with loads of character. Good for a drink or two or more 😉
J. M.
Never been before, friend recommended. Roast was lovely couldn't eat it all, even after running 20 miles this morning. Yes that big. Staff all friendly and helpful.
m. l. (.
I pop along here reasonably regularly for the fabulous Sunday roast. Huge meal, a couple of decent pints and then down the hill to home and an afternoon nap. Sunday bliss.
P. G.
A good local pub that does delicious food and has a quiz. Good selection of Harveys beers. Plays good music on vinyl.
J. P.
Great staff, great atmosphere, great records. The kitchen here is amazing. Definitely my favourite place for a massive roast dinner for just a tenner.
T. J.
The roasts are amazing, huge portions, super tasty and only about a tenner. Worth heading out of town for. Staff were well sound. Proper cosy and warm in the winter too.
S. H.

S. J. B.

J. S.
Been to the constant service a few times but thought I'd put a review this time round.the food was amazing nicely cooked and there was alot of it that 4 out of the 5 of us there couldn't finish it.the staff are really nice and friendly and the from the point of ordering our food we were eating within 10 mins.they also has Rush 2012 playing so I was very happy.the only downside is the parking as its in a controlled zone so we had a 15 minutes walk either way but for us that is ok.youll need it after the amount of food.
Z. L.

What a pub! Honestly one of the best I’ve ever been to in brighton, and I’ve been to a fair few! Warm, cosy, welcoming- what more could one possibly want, or need? Pie night went down a damn treat. Flakey and delicious pastry, creamy chicken...the works! Would also like to extend a special thank you to Katie the barmaid for being so lovely and accommodating, she was honestly a ray of sunshine! We will be coming back soon, and that’s for sure.
