Reviews of The Dorset Arms
k. R.
Just returned from a meal out at The Dorset Arms and have to say the food was absolutely fantastic.
We are visiting the area for a couple of days and we're so pleased to have chosen here to eat.
The food was some of the best we have eaten (and we like to eat out alot).
We had the scotch egg to start, followed by the duck and the pork belly which were both outstanding.
Finally, we indulged in the apple and pear crumble tart and the baked cheesecake with spiced plums which were also delicious.
I never leave reviews but just had to for here as it was so worth it.
The service was also brilliant and they were all very humble.
Highly recommended *****

My sis and I went for dinner here the other night, we have been before several times some years ago, and decided to go again. I was extremely happy with the service, very friendly and fast. The Manager was very helpful too. I had the fish and chips and it was delightful! The pea mash that came with it was the most heavenly thing I've eaten in a long time, I wish there was more of it! The vanilla cheesecake afterwards with berry compote was just exquisite, one of the best cheesecakes I have had. I will be coming back again for sure.

Nice place located near several footpaths with friendly staff and delicious pub food. We had burger and venison pie and a cheese board. Really nice.

Nice venue and dinning room. We were in the outside section at the back which has a roll our roof in case of rain. Nice menu with a good selection of dishes. Friendly and knowledge staff

It was the first time I've been to the Dorset Arms. Food was excellent, service was fantastic and I would recommend eating here. I will be back again for the Sunday roast!

The Dorset Arms is a truly lovely place to stay.
The room we stayed in was in the Old School House behind the Pub.
It was a very comfortable room with and extremely comfortable bed. The bathroom is big and has both a long bath and a walk in shower. There are toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer and TV as you would expect, but there are also bath robes and a landline for use free as long as you are not calling abroad. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the linen and towels sparkling white. Thank you to Sue for the beautiful housekeeping. The view from the room is the one in the photo. so quiet and so tranquil. All we could hear were the cows and the pheasants!
The food at the pub is worthy of a top restaurant. I had soup both nights which was honestly the best I have had out. I had duck one night and lobster the other. Both excellent, the duck particularly was wonderful. My husband had the homemade steak and kidney pie which was a proper real pie - not just a lid, with excellent shortcrust pastry. The following night he had the fish and chips which was good too.
And to the staff. They are really what top off this place as somewhere you would want to return to.
Lisa who greeted us and was there for most of our stay, is so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Amelia and Justin and the girls (sorry girls, we did not get your names) were fabulous at customer service. They were attentive without being intrusive and friendly without being over familiar. They were knowledgeable about the food and wines and served in such a way as to make the dining experience an unhurried and thoroughly enjoyable affair. A mention must also go to Brian, who was all of these things as well as being really funny and entertaining.
A big shout out must also go to the locals in the area who are so very friendly to us visitors. and a special hello to Alan, a nonagenarian who had worked on the estate for 70 years and had loads of interesting stories to tell.
We will definitely be going back - if only to try the Cote de Boeuf!!!

Biggest book I've ever seen. And to think the subject could stretch that far. Plus, can't go past a retrotastic prawn cocktail.

The staff at Dorset Arms we’re so kind and caring staying up all night looking after people stranded locally in snow. They provided food, drink, fires, electricity and shelter all night for a group of families, couples and people alone who had nowhere to go. Humanity at its best. X
P. S.
We hired a pod for our 40th wedding anniversary. The staff managed to balance being always available but not a constant interruption. They were always attentive and the food was excellent. We could not have asked for more.

Lovely pub in a beautiful location with really delicious food, however there are some things which can definitely be improved. We booked a table and turned up slightly early which was no problem but after enquiring about a garden table we were denied despite multiple empty tables which remained empty for the duration of our stay! On top of this, the staff were not very attentive or hugely helpful- it was a constant struggle to get their attention. I also felt that the screens put up were slightly unnecessary and intrusive, not to mention incredibly dirty. I appreciate they are taking extra precautions with covid safety but this felt a step too far and made for quite an unpleasant dining experience. The food was delicious but the bread seemed shop-brought which was the only downside. Apart from that, we did enjoy our visit but perhaps some things could be improved to make it even better.

Great gastropub in the middle of some beautiful English countryside. We booked a place here so we could call in halfway along the Forest Way, an abandoned railway line turned country walk. It was a small detour from the walk so no problems getting there.
We sat in the rear garden along with our dog to enjoy the view. Staff were very friendly and had is seated promptly and provided menus and took drinks.
The food was extremely good, worthy of some fine dining restaurants, absolutely no complaints. We ordered the half lobster, royal fish and chips both of which were cooked to perfection, along with the prawn cocktail for starters and finished off with some made on premises orange ice-cream. Great meal out! Thank you to the Dorset Arms for a great meal

What a beautiful, quintessential English pub/restaurant set deep in the countryside. The school house was perfect for a weekend getaway with incredible views and very comfortable beds. The food at The Dorset Arms is just delicious, and the atmosphere so friendly and welcoming. I will be back soon...
C. B.
Went with extended family for lunch, we had pre booked the table in advance. The service was excellent, a nice traditional style English pub with open fireplace. The food arrived in a timely manner and was to a good standard. Good choice of food on the menu.
d. r.
Lovely old County style Pub with a fabulous history to the adjacent historic Estate and Lovely to discover the Pub is still owned and managed by the family. Staff were super friendly. I shall get back there soon as we enjoyed our tome there so much.
L. H.
Enjoyable lunch stop here whilst out walking. Food and service very good. Would recommend.
S. P.
Excellent food, service and a lovely, varied menu too. We had a great evening, thanks guys. Highly recommended for dinner.
G. K.
Three of us had luncheon. Booking is recommended as it was busy throughout the lunchtime and afternoon. I choose Creamed Cods Roe on Toast as it rather unusual. It was fine but in hindsight I should have gone for the Scotch Egg with Mustard Mayonnaise. I then had the Buckhurst Park Venison Burger with Blue Cheese & Pommes Frites. The burger was delicius as it was charr grilled. French fries were lovelly too. I had Chocolate and Hazelnut Brownie, Hot Fudge Sauce & Vanilla Ice Cream for dessert. The brownie was more of a cake than a brownie but the hot chocolate fundhe sauce saved it. We finished with coffee which is large and delicious. The friends I were with had been before and enjoyed it and I found it equally splendid. The only downside is Haveys Bitter or Larkins Bitter were the only beers available by draught. Nothing special or unsual so dissappointing on the beer front. A porter would have been nice.
E. F.
Very friendly and accomdating staff. Great local foods (we had the susage and mash). Amazing decor and ambiance. I would recommmend The Dorset Arms always.
G. D.
Lovely friendly atmosphere and staff. Food is extremely good and not rushed even tho it was a Sunday lunch. Could have chosen just about anything on the menu...all very tempting. Good wine list too
E. D.
Friendly staff. Had a cracking pint of Harvey's Old Ale. There is a service bell mounted near the bar, a rare survivor from the era of table service being provided in the premium lounge rooms of pubs.
S. S.
Lovely pub, friendly staff, good food and nice local ales. What more could you ask for.
M. F.
Lovely stay. Staff are wonderful and so helpful. We had an issue with our rooms on the first night...and they immediately helped and sorted no questions. Breakfast was also great. My daughter and i dont eat meat so they helpfully made a delicious avocado alternative for us. Beautiful spot on edge of the estate. We ate dinner one night at the restaurant 😋 very nice.
M.
Lovely country pub! Great atmosphere for a quiet dinner. Food was absolutely everything we could have asked for. The staff were friendly and super accommodating.
We had the Scotch egg to start and the Crab dish. Both were great. Those Scotch eggs!! The sausage meat around the Scotch egg was divine and very reminiscent of the butcher Arthur Fry’s classic local sausages (East Grinstead) - so rich and flavourful. Turns out they’re local a Buckhurst sausage recipe (there’s little bits of local info in the menus and on the tables).
For mains we both had the rib eye steak which was absolutely delicious, perfectly cooked and clearly the meat was of high quality.
The weather meant we couldn’t make the most of the beer garden but it looked great.
Recommend booking as it seems like they may get busy on peak nights.
r. p.
Lovely rural pub with restaurant and outdoor area including a recently added pizza oven open in the Summer. The restaurant was upmarket with commensurate food and wine prices, attentive and friendly staff. Real fire and nice ambiance.
J. M.
Absolutely fantastic stay! My son and I wanted somewhere we could take our dog.
We were not disappointed…. They staff were so friendly and accommodating, Roxy was made to
Feel very at home. The room we stayed in was Victoria, really beautiful, beds super Comfy with lots of fresh towels and complimentary toiletries. Roxy even had her own bed! She was also allowed to dine with us in the garden room where she had some ice cream. We will definitely be back. Loved it!!
J. A.
Really good food and lovely atmosphere. Traditional pub but with a great vibe and friendly staff. The fish and chips were great (brioche batter apparently) and the venison burger was also excellent. We’ll be back.
S. E.
First time here, and I came to celebrate my birthday with my wife! It may be the excitement of having a babysitter and spending time together. We sat in the Garden Room, which was lovely, the comfort of indoors with a open roof, and was a perfect evening. We had appetiser, main and dessert and bottle of red wine. All the food was wonderful, my wife is vegetarian also and there was nothing we did not enjoy. Will definitely return and hope the standard will be same! Great evening, great food, wine. The price was reflected in the quality but for a special occasion we went all out and were happy.
S. S.
+ Lovely pub setting + decoration/layout
+ Helpful Staff
+ Good quality food except
+ Real feeling of being inside a british pub with high quality dining
- Burger was overcooked and rubbery.
- No ketchup, only McDonalds style sachets
O. S.
Lovely pub, pay and display car park out back. Pricey, but nice. Decent, standard pub food.
M. K.
Lovely old pub, warm welcome and great food.
A. B.
Went to the Dorset Arms on the way back from Sheffield Park. Lovely welcome and good atmosphere. Limited menu and no lunch time items. However, I had the sole slips and my Husband had the barsteak. Couldn't believe how small and pretentous the servings were. No embleshment and nothing to write home about. My fish had little flavour. Over priced and not somewhere I would revisit as consequence. Much better value for money in other local pubs.
T. K.
Very nice location, few tables in the front surround by limited parking, more table in the side garden. Good food but portions, hmm, leaning towards Michelin restaurants as pricing is, rather at highest end. But it seems to suit their majority of wealthy guests. So, it may not be the best place to stop for a lunch for an average traveller :)
Good service and nice staff.
I. C.
Excellent Sunday Lunch visit today, attentive friendly staff, great atmosphere and brilliant service. 5 happy customers ranging from teenagers to pensioners !
We will definitely be back 👍

Good food and lovely pub. Make reservations.
G. H.
Good food, great service, highly recommended.
O. M.
A lot more upscale now it's in his Lordships tenure. Excellent guest ales, very comfortable interior, great setting. Exceptional crumble and custard. Plenty of staff on hand and knowledgeable about the pub history.
M. D.
Well this is an unusual place. It's definitely a pub but better than that sounds. The ambience is very nice. Friendly and excellent service. The food is eccentric. We started with a tiny portion of excellent prawns perfectly cooked with a spicy dip to share, a pre starter. Then we shared 12 of the best oysters we have had for ages. They came from Mersea Island near Colchester and they are the best, and very difficult to get. So 110% so far. There were good wines on the list but expensive. Then the main courses were disappointing. Mainly pub grub. Fish and Chips, burgers etc. There was cold lobster but that didn't sound inspiring. So it made no sense. Fabulous unusual starters followed by nothing much. If of course you want good old British pub grub this would be a good place to go. Not what we wanted though, so only 4 stars.
m. B.
Excellent meal, excellent service. Very happy friendly staff. Lovely atmosphere.
k. w.
Lovely Fathers Day lunch, beef and lamb were divine, great family occasion.
L. D.
Oh my goodness. This place was recommended to us by a customer and boy they did not disappoint. I took my mum here for a lovely meal. The service was amazing, really kind and helpful staff. The food was absolutely phenomenal. Venison cottage pie oh my looordddd unreal. We have never had a meal as good as this. The restaurant itself was warm and cozy with really nice decor. Will definitely come here again. Well worth the money.
W. P.
My favourite country pub with a fantastic well kept roaring log fire in the winter and service is the best for miles with the added restaurant it really is a special place with the food and staff all on top of their game a great find.
K.
Beautiful Garden and Marquee.Food excellent.
A lovely pub with a great menu. Staff very attentive and service good.
3 of us had the sea bass which was perfectly cooked. delicious lemon posset for pud. will definitely book again and it is a 35 minute drive, so not so local for us - but worth it.
Very covid safe if you are concerned about this.
C. J.
Had a lovely lunch there, on the way back from a hospital appointment. Helpful staff as well.
K. B.
Stopped in here for lunch after a relaxing walk along The Forest Way ... wow! The service was brilliant and we instantly felt welcomed. Food was yum. We had the lobster and posh fish and chips with some cold pints. Special shoutout to Millie for giving us a short cut back onto our walk back to our car. Will be coming again soon. Oh yeh - definitely get the orange ice-cream which is made in house. Delish.
h.
Stopped here for a light lunch on a Saturday afternoon before taking a walk round Buckhurst Park. It's a beautiful pub with ample parking and an extensive menu - lovely fresh Malden oysters and ducks eggs are among the options - and a well chosen, reasonably priced wine list.
Frequented by the huntin' shootin' & fishin' set - don't be alarmed by the gun bags lurking in corners!

Beautiful pub with great outdoor seating. The menu is quite old-school (great selection of sherry and port), but limited options for vegetarians. The salad options are not the strongest, but the classics like fish and chips were good. A great option for the setting and drinks!
S. W.
Visited whilst on holiday a week ago.. Ate in the enclosed outside area which was lovely. Great food. Great service. Friendly staff. Can't recommend highly enough and would love to visit again.
M.
We're staying local and decided to visit for dinner. The pub is beautiful, set slightly back from the road with a lovely rear garden. The menu is great with lots of locally sourced ingredients. Our meal was delicious, very well cook and presented, the staff very polite and attentive. Would not hesitate to recommend or visit again. Mateen & Aziza Ghani
L. D.
Food was delicious. I usually eat plant based but made a rare exception for the venison cottage pie, it was delicious. A few more plant based options would be welcomed though
f. g.
Very nice food and Harvey Ale and felt very safe eating in pub.
L. H.
A great place to stay. Comfortable, quiet and picturesque. Exactly what I needed to wind down. Breakfast was delicious too. Thank you
A. H.
Very nice food. Outdoor seating area was lovely with good views over the countryside.
S. H.
The food was absolutely delicious and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. If you're looking for an elevated pub meal then I would highly recommend the Dorset Arms
K. A.
A bit disappointed to be honest,we had fish and chips and the coating on the fish was overdone bordering on burnt,my Venison burger again was overdone for my liking.
Service was good and friendly.
Y. L.
Quite expensive - the starters are very small portions and I object to paying service charge which is added to the bill when the service is not great - we waited 45 minutes for our food and it wasn't that busy. The food we had however was very tasty.
A. M. M.
A wonderful experience at this pub last Saturday. We didn't book but got a nice table for 3. The food was excellent although a little pricey, bear that in mind if you go. Superb gin menu!! We had local Sussex gin.
J. M.
Lovely atmosphere, staff were excellent and the food was lovely. Well priced also!
J. R.
Countryside pub with a rich history, friendly staff, great food and beverages.
p. b.
We went on Father's Day and had quite a good roast lunch. Downside is that it was busy so service was slow. Also the raspberry pavlova was not good. The meringue was too hard and it should be softer and there was too much cream
h. d.
Great Sunday roast. Separate dining room to bar and best to make a reservation if you want to sit inside. Outdoor seating to front and rear usually available if you arrive without booking.
Very scenic location in a historic, timber-framed building. Combine with a visit to St Michael's church up the hill if you like history and architecture.
A. S.
We had an amazing meal, served by pleasant and knowledgable staff. We ordered Oeuf Maxim ,1 flounder and 1 venison then 1 autumn fruits crumble and 1 rice pud with compote. It was memorable!! It was busy but relaxed. Service was prompt but not rushed. Can't wait to go back!
P. M.
Have been going to the pub for many years. Last night we had a table in the corner. Whilst we still liked the food there was a group of three men drinking in the bar using the most foul language and the whole experience was very dispiriting and not worthy of this pub at all.
C. S.
Good service & much improved food. The setting has been carefully restored & the menu is simpler- lovely pea risotto & a good local sparkling wone went down well. Service is efficient & friendly
M. F.
Great location. A beautiful setting and historic pub. Quality real ale and very friendly staff.
C. W.
Good all round. Food excellent, staff competent cheerful and helpful. Surroundings v. Good, parking OK but can be limited.
B. C.
A real gem - perfect setting, historic building, Harvey's beer, excellent food, lovely staff. An outdoor pizza oven was being built in the large garden - looking forward to trying this soon...
P. B.
The best Sunday roast I can remember. Beautifully cooked, juicy beef (and lots of it), real Yorkshire puds, fresh vegetables and home made gravy. Absolutely delicious. I also highly recommend the Tarte tatin. The staff were friendly and attentive, the pub itself homely and welcoming. A lovely big fire when it's chilly outside. One of my very favourite places!
N. S.
Lovely and unique place. Fantastic food using produce from the estate. Been coming on and off for years and always enjoy our drinks and meals here
M. N.
Lovely waiters who were really friendly. The accommodation was clean and the separate cottage which has been converted into en-suite rooms is quiet with views and crickets pitch. I do not appreciate being asked to sign a form "In case anything goes missing". The tea making facilities in the room were dreadful. Take your own mugs and a kettle. There are machines that heat water but the water taste like coffee.
I was told there was a communal kettle in the lounge are.

Emily at the Dorset Arms was so unbelievably sweet & kind to me the other weekend I've had to leave a review! I had been in a minor car accident a few days prior, and was having difficulty with my headlights. I pulled over into the pub a bit shakey & she was so sweet, calming, and genuinely helpful to me - I'm so grateful she was there!
I will undoubtedly be back here with family when I'm in the area again - the facilities were gorgeous, really lovely toilets & beautiful interiors.
Thank you so much for your kindness once again!! x
R. C.
Great Harveys and the flat iron chicken was excellent. Staff were attentive and friendly. The baby changing facilities were very good.
Ample parking and had the weather been kinder we would have eaten in the garden.
A. S.
My first visit. Great atmosphere. Staff and service great.Gorgeous Harvey's bitter. Shoulda asked for a side salad with steak and chips. Best tasting chips. I'll be visiting very soon.
T. N.
Very good food. All locally sourced. Well worth a visit. Kent country cooking at its best.
N. B.
Had a perfect stay here at the weekend.
Really lovely room & perfect cozy country pub to while away a Saturday afternoon with fantastic food in the evening. Breakfast on Sunday was also superb as were all the staff.
Thanks - We'll be back, for sure!
H. M.
We always enjoy our visit to you, weather was good to us too, a little chilly outside. Hopefully not long till we can be inside. Loved it all the same ❤️
H. C.
1st visit just for a soft drink on a hot afternoon. Sat outside. Lovely area and scenery. Staff helpful and friendly.
S. S.
Excellent service, delicious food the chief is first class. Their were 5 of us and we all had different starters and mains. None of us were disappointed. Very good value for money and lovely, lovely ambiance.
T. b.
Superb little rooms behind a traditional country pub, very peaceful and the views from the property are stunning! Nice little touches including a Nespresso machine! Quite unbelievable that a premier inn would cost the same!
N. J.
Stayed here for two nights while on a walking holiday, great room, excellent food and beer and friendly staff.
J. W.
I have been twice to this pub for lunch. The beer is always good and well kept and the food very tasty. The venison shepherd's pie is a particular recommendation. Service faultless and friendly.
J. D.
Always a pleasure! Great drinks, great staff and great food. Although the access wasn’t great still managed to get the pram in all the way. Very child friendly.
S. M. B. L.
This pub is just a few short steps from several country walks, long and short. There is outside seating and indoors the atmosphere is friendly. The restaurant is well set up. Great for parties and private dining.
W. B.
The pub is in a pretty countryside location.
It can be reached by bus as there is a bus stop opposite served by Metrobus route 291, which runs hourly between Crawley/East Grinstead/Tunbridge Wells.
I walked there from Hartfield following a well marked Wealden Way. The footpath crossed fields, some with sheep. Withyham church is visible above the trees and it is easy just to head in that direction. The final leg of the walk involved paths on the side of the road and soon the pub came into view.
There were expensive cars with personalised registration numbers, in the car park. The staff seemed a bit surprised I hadn’t booked a table, and I was led to a bench near said cars.
Although claiming to be continuing the Eat Out to Help Out scheme, their variation is that if you order 2 or more items from the menu, then you get £5 off.
The salad nicoise I had as a main course included one egg, strips of tomato, tuna and slices of anchovy. Around £15.
Harveys Best bitter was good as expected but around £5 a pint.
Still, if you turn up in a Porsche it won’t bother you. I got the bus to Tunbridge Wells.
R. T.
Lovely food and cosy atmosphere

Stayed for 1 night, staff couldn't do enough for us, bedroom was lovely and clean and very spacious. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice.
H. B.
Stayed a night here for a nearby wedding and thought it was lovely. Quaint cottage room was spotlessly clean, staff were friendly and helpful and brekkie was yum. Beautiful surroundings and would recommend.

Loved every minute. Amazing food, lovely accommodation and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Really a top notch place
K. H.
Loved it. Great country pub with open fire and good food.

Visited a few times. We really like it here, always had good food and service. Today's goat cheese salad was the best goat cheese I have had.
C. S.
Fab static Sunday meal 4 adults 3 children extremely reasonably priced and not a drop off food was left. Lovely service and wonderful atmosphere thank you

Only stopped for a drink halfway on our walk. Barman was pleasant and polite, the drink was nice, the rest room was clean.

About third time here, nice biggish country pub with large garden. 3/4 real ales, 2/3 lagers. Not eaten here but seems to be main business with good menu.
D. F.
Great sevice and out door garden and food is excellent
F. P.
Waited that long to order dessert that I lost all interest and then I'm presented with a bill that includes service charge. Would love to edit this review in the future but can't see me going back anytime soon.
P. C.
I only stopped for a swift pint with the wife. The place is lovely and staff friendly. Couldn't tell you about the food but the fact there was 34 booked in that evening should tell you something

I got stuck in the snow with my two children (with many others in the same situation) on Sunday evening and couldn’t be more grateful to Justin and his amazing team who took us in and ensured we stayed safe, warm and comfortable overnight. We will definitely return to enjoy a meal.

I recently came along to The Dorset Arms for my work Christmas Party. Justin, Lisa & the team were amazing. The food was lovely (especially the roast potatoes). A wonderful evening was had by all, topped of with the comfy rooms & picturesque setting in the snow. I highly recommend that you pay them a visit.
