Reviews of The Evening Star
c. l.
Excellent choice of very well kept cask and keg beer (probably cider too, just didn't try it) served by welcoming and informative staff.
Not totally convinced by the food, it was pretty tasty but significantly spicier than suggested by the menu - fritters highly recommended!
A. “. n. F.
The pub has a decent drink selection, place is clean and sure like others say can be a little moody. Well people like me rise above it than bark about it, no one has been rude just perhaps mechanical. Go with mates for a few beers, I insist and do a chicken impression am sure that might break a smile or get you fiercly ejected. Cheers to dark star staff for keeping all that beer mint condition.
G.
Great selection of cask, keg and bottled beers, most of which I'd never heard of! I don't visit Brighton that often but would make a point of revisiting The Evening Star.
J. G.
Good beer pub. Wide range of beers for all tastes. Would be great if food available
j. g.
I have visited the Evening Star for a number of years and it has alway been a welcoming pub, with great ale and a pleasant atmosphere.
However last night left me very disappointed. Whilst the ale was excellent the staff were the most miserable and unwelcoming I have experienced anywhere. Serving customers seemed to be a bit much for them.
They are selling food and the stench of over used oil was at times very powerful and unpleasant.
Sadly I won't be rushing back to what has always been a wonderful place.
3 stars only because the ale choice is excellent.
B. C.
Always a pleasure going here. some really interesting beers. Lots of choice. This is one of my regular places I like to go.
J. H.
Fantastic evening in this proper ale house last week. Almost ruined by an absolute weapon playing videos loudly from his phone. Barman came to the pub’s rescue and asked him to stop. After a couple of visits from the staff our amateur VJ had a tantrum, walked out and let us enjoy the rest of our evening. Top beer and staff!
D. P.
🌟Awesome little pub!👍👍
Friendly, welcoming staff and locals👥
🍺Great selection of both cask ales and craft beer/ales.🍺
🍟They also have an extensive Vegan menu.
I throughly recommend the kebab-shop chips and the Smokehouse burger🍔 🤤

Well it is simply the best proper pub in Brighton - end of.
D. W.
Great selection of cask and keg beers and ciders, plus veggie food options, in a traditional pub environment. Draught beers available included a variety of styles, with dark porters and a German weissbier as well as pale IPAs and the like. Very handy for the station too.
J. G.
Great to have this quality public house back open. Fine craft ales and interesting selection of bottled Continental and World beers. Seating out front and very close to the station. A hidden gem in plain sight. They do have an external kitchen but not tried it. If it's like the beers it will be delicious.
V. T.
Awesomely good real ale and cider pub, decent prices and a dearth of the t*ssers that infest the pubs nearer the train station. Best place to wait for a train, allow 7 mins to catch it.
S. J. B.
Beer to die with/for
Vault City.coffee poached pear praline crumble pastry sour!who'd have thought😋
M. W.
A great pub with lovely staff with amazing food. Great vegetarian options. Well worth a visit.
D. W.
Smaller pub than I expected, but a nice place to have a pint before catching a train back to London. The Revelation is a nice pint of Ipa and recommended by the slightly abrupt barman (although there were a few people waiting, so someone asking for a recommendation may not have been what he wanted). Bar area is small and easily blocked by people drinking at the bar, but a nice place for a, quiet pint at lunchtime.
K. D.
Lovely little pub, friendly staff, great selection of ales. Food is also served here.
D. 2.
Fantastic little pub. Quality beer and ales. Always head to this pub when out drinking.
R. W.
My favourite Brighton pub, ideal for a few beers before the train home.
D. B.
Great ales, warm friendly welcome, my go-to pub when I'm near the station
K. G.
My favourite pub in Brighton. Small, humble and unassuming. The beer is fantastic and there is always a great selection. No T.V blaring, just good beer and good service. Good value for money for Brighton too.
M. C.
Great selection of beers and very knowledgeable staff concerning the beers they sell
S. N.
Back in Brighton and checked out the star beer pub of our visit a few years back. Suffice to say that post Covid it feels safe and still offers a wide range of beers, well kept and presented. A milk stout, session IPA, hazelnut stout and a German Weihenstephaner for just over £20 represent good value too. So pleased that it has survived and will visit again.
J. C.
Grat atmosphere and staff were fantastic and beer was superb great experience great clean safe pub
G. P.
Excellent choice of cask ales and craft brews from Dark Star brewing and beyond! Was told by a local that is was probably the best in Brighton for real ale, and have to say the American Pale was the best pint I had anywhere on a long weekend visit.
E. M.
Sound little pub, good varied selection of Craft Beer on tap an a boss range of bottles in the fridge including Omnipollo, Lervig etc (with a 20% discount to take out)
S. H.
Brighton's finest alehouse with an unbeatable selection of ales and ciders and real local pub atmosphere.
M. R.
Came highly recommended by a friend. Popular local pub that's easing distance to the train station
P. R.
Great selection of beer across the range. Friendly bar staff wonderful beer. Most probably my favourite pub to visit in Brighton.
K. G.
Beer was good but the revelation was the amazing food using foraged ingredients. Try the loaded fries - pigeon breast in a rhubarb and hogweed sauce - fantastic! Want to eat everything on menu even if I haven't heard of most of ingredients!
T. H.
Love this pub. This is a pub for those who appreciate good beers and the opportunity to sample a wide variety of craft ales. Nice and relaxed atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff. Close to the train station, there is always a good risk of not venturing any further into Brighton and spending your day here.
S. A.
Great small pub, excellent choice of real ales.
c. t.
Nice boozer close to Brighton Station with a great selection of drinks. From an IPA to a Milk Stout....something to like here :-)
Excellent service also.
B. C.
Tremendous selection of proper ales. Great bar staff. Only wish it were bigger.
D. S.
One of the best pubs in East Sussex, let alone Brighton. Great beer. Great service. Beautifully decorated. Did I mention great, well kept beer?!
D. Y.
Brilliant selection of beers. A must-visit for any beer fan in Brighton.
J. B.
A wonderful pub with amazing fresh beer at real prices not brighton prices
J. B.
One of my all-time favourite pubs in Britain. Seems like a standard bar, but there's something just magical about the place. It's definitely more than the sum of its parts. Fantastic beer, very well kept. Local treats as well as beer from all round the world. It's a pub that understands its role in the community. Always worth popping in for a pint when in Brighton.
A. R.
My favourite Brighton pub, always a fine selection of Cask and Keg ales.
J. R.
Good customer services and good beer!! Thoroughly enjoyed it!!
B. S.
God pub for drinking real ale. No food. Very convenient for Brighton railway station.
C. P.
Lovely beer, lovely atmosphere. Staff are as friendly as they are knowledgeable. Couldn't ask for more. Easily Top 3 in Brighton.
P. W.
Cosy, low ceilinged and small bar serving outstanding real ales and craft beers. A short walk from the train station so a must for whiling away the time waiting for a train.
M. K.
The best selection of beers and mellow atmosphere...
I. H.
Stupendous cask beer pub.
P. L.
Very handy for the train station, this pub is located on a quiet street and is an ideal place for a drink when arriving at or leaving Brighton. The decor is basic, but the emphasis here is on the excellent range of real ales. The staff are knowledgeable and the prices are reasonable. An added bonus is the selection of board games available for customers to use. The one thing preventing 5 stars is that the toilets smell of, well, toilets.
K. P.
One the best well hidden pubs in Brighton with good selection of drinks
C. D.
An amazing selection of craft ales/lager/beer and some craft ciders too. It attracts an older crowd and is a fairly small pub so standing room only if you're not there first, as such it can lack a bit of an atmosphere sometimes so is a little hit-and-miss. Definitely good for a one or two pint stop but wouldn't stay much longer.
F. A.
Good vibe, great beers, fair prices.
D. S.
Fantastic selection of craft beer with something to suit every taste. The bar staff are friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the beer. The atmosphere is very relaxed and it's a great place to just chill and shoot the breeze. The pub may be small but it's perfectly formed.
O. W.
Nice traditional pub in Brighton with a great range of real beers and ale's.
A. F.
Friendly staff and large variety of ales are on offer, food was great. Patron was loudly Facetiming and was asked to stop so extra love for that!
R. C.
A great selection of beers and ales, staff knowledgeable and friendly. It’s rare to find such a nice pub so close to a train station!
It does smell like a traditional pub and definitely could do with better seating, loads of low bar stools, but very few tables.
Would go again
J. B.
Great selection of beers, but very few non alcoholic options.
G. R.
It's all about the beer here really. All the beers are in great condition, whether the Dark Star brewery beers or any of the changing selection of ales, cider etc. It's popular without ever seeming too busy and the bar staff are always helpful with selection. Decor is pretty basic but very clean and there is an outside table. It's proximity to the station makes it a great stop for one and they also sell beer to takeaway
C. C.
Nice atmosphere. Good beer. Food is good
G. B.
Without looking this place up you'd never guess the quality of the service and beer from the exterior (but that's all part of the charm) . Friendly atmosphere great music great beer. Never fail to offer unusual beers to try. Definitely one of my favourite pubs.
M. H.
My absolutely favourite pub in Brighton
B. L.
Always got some swell beers on, dark star have been brought by fullers and soo far they haven't changed anything much which is great as dark star has always been a brilliant local beer maker and continue to be this far! Quite a small venue but well worth the visit for the great choice of beers always on
M. F.
Been here a few times. Always a great selection of beers. Problem is I was enjoying myself so much that I decided to catch the last train and fell asleep until I was awoken in Bedford! This resulted in an expensive taxi fare home! The four stars is not for this but because of the irritating idiots that block your way to the bar!
B. W.
Good beer, friendly staff and a convenient location.
A. H.
Proper decent real ale and craft beer bar. A Brighton legend
P. W.
A Proper Pub and probably the best place in Brighton to get a huge choice of excellent cask and keg ales at a very reasonable price. A pint of Dark Star Hophead is £3.50 per pint here whilst other pubs sell it for around £5! And it tastes better here.
T. H.
Great value for good beer, especially as Brighton can be very pricey. Friendly staff and good atmosphere. No wallpaper music, Sky Sports or gambling machines - bliss!
V. B.
Small pub with an amazing selection of ales, beers and cider on tap and in bottles.
Un-fussy interior and amazing burger shack just outside.
Not child friendly, literally doesn't allow babies
D. H.
Great pub just around the corner from Brighton railway station. The Star is the original home of Dark Star brewery. It is quite small and doesn't do food, but the beer range is excellent, naturally majoring on Dark Star's range. Well worth a visit
B. L.
It's a great pub. Always has a good selection of beer, the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. The prices are good and its good a really good feel to it. The atmosphere is more of an old school local, not a fancy schmancy craft beer bar - which is good.
S. M.
Everything a pub should be, love it!
B. R.
Lovely staff, good beer. In our case, amazingly accommodating for cyclists. Ideal for an end of ride pint/or two before catching the train! Perfect last stop.
N. B.
Lovely vegan food and great selection of drinks!
k. n.
I have come here for many years as the first port of call for a away game but we visited today for leisure and had excellent burgers and home made chips, The beer was on point as would be expected with Dark Star.
P. W.
Recently refurbished. Even more minimalist. Not that it matters as one only goes here for the beer. Always a fascinating selection of beers on offer and staff that can smile. This is a seriously good pub.
T. D.
Excellent boozer. Hampered by lack of space. Great range of beers. Staff excellent in difficult covid circumstances
J. T.
Lovely little pub
Food fab
D. B.
Fantastic pub under normal circumstance and still great beer and friendly staff in the current pandemic!
p. a.
Linked to Dark Star brewery, always about 12 different ales and craft beers on tap, plus loads more cans and bottles available from the fridge. Nice and cosy space. Always worth a visit.
C. M.
Very relaxing, somehow combines pubs of the last millennium with hip happening ones of this millennium. Great beer offerings. Generous opening hours. Plus, it's close to the station. Seating for solos or groups.
J. B.
Dark Star's own pub.
Excellent selection of real ales, ciders and craft beers. Customers friendly, and staff very knowledgeable about beers. Didn't try the food but spent a very happy lunchtime here.
C. H.
A busy pub with a good selection of vegan food.
S. H.
A truly wonderful establishment, with bags of friendly local flavour. The wood panelling and furniture are a treat for the eyes. On top of all that, the beer is some of the finest and best kept in Brighton.
m. g.
Great pub, excellent ales, nice staff!
C. L.
Small pub near Brighton station. You can bring your own food to consume. I recommend Trollburger and the Curry Leaf cafe at the station. The pub has outdoor seating. Fine choice of craft beers though a little expensive.
M. H.
Classic, no frills pub where I'd happily take my father. Enjoy a cling-filmed sandwich and take comfort in a consistently excellent roster of beers on tap. The barmaid is really lovely, too.
M. “. O. K.
Fantastic pub with a wide range of Dark Star ales as well as guest ales on keg & cask. Prices clearly listed and staff still warn you when you pick something pricey.
Definitely a place to visit either as soon as you arrive or just before you leave given you can see the station as you stand outside
R. e.
Great selection of real ales
T. H.
Excellent pub and it serves a great selection of ales, and not just from the Dark Star Brewery either. It's close to the Brighton railway station too.
D. B.
My local, my second home, my love. Everything about this place to me is perfect, the staff, the beer, the regulars, the oftentimes interesting non-regulars, and the cute little pub itself. Been coming here for the last 15 years and I look forward to coming here for many more years/beers! <3
B. S.
Cool small pub just by the station. The beer is really good, and it has an interesting atmosphere. Only negative point is the musician when we went: he was pretty terrible, although I'm guessing some people probably enjoyed it.
Worth a shot for the beer alone
S. H.
If you enjoy high quality ale then this is one of the best pubs in the UK at which to drink it. The building is a little scruffy, ignore that and enjoy the ale and the great service from the bar staff.
S. M.
Always the best kept ale in Brighton with 3 guest ales from beer swaps added to 4 beers selected from the Dark Star range as well as international craft beers on draft and supplemented by rare bottles.
R. F.
Good choice of areal Ales.
Good Pino Grigio wine
Staff remembering our order even one hadn't served us. He knew I liked just blobble of ice.
Will go back.
8 months on.....still good choice of ales.
Staff not so nice....talking about previous customers who were rude. Always two sides of a story, she may have aggravated the situation?
Likely.
K. W.
One of my favourite pubs, still has a good range of Dark Star ales and some guests. Worth a visit if you enjoy decent beer
G. A.
Great pub with good atmosphere and selection of ales. Perfect stop before your train back home.
M. E.
Some of the best beer in Brighton.
P. B.
Hasn't changed much over the years. Still great beers and welcoming staff.
G. W.
Busy with good choice of beer
R. L.
This is a lovely little pub, filled with great people. From the staff, to #LycraBen (who has a fantastic handle on life and drinks!), to the older fella at the bar who was happy to recommend some ales.
#LycraBen, we've had a smashing time. Loads of beer, a swim, the steak buffet was killer. Met some fantastic people, had some really interesting conversations, and Stew is getting all over Chloe. And rightly so.
K. Þ.
Great beers and a place of historical significance being the birthplace of Dark Star beers. However the atmosphere isn't great and staff make little effort with non-locals so it can feel very unwelcoming
M. D.
I am a fan of Dark Star beers and love the Duke of Wellington in Shoreham. The Evening Star, however, lacks the comfortable feel of the Wellie, especially if you end up with the leg numbing high stools. Definitely a place to pop into for a pint, but it takes good company to make it a place for an evening session.
L.
Quality beers, great prices. No nonsense, no frills. The pub itself is a bit of a beer history gem too.
A. H.
Classic beer pub. Great range of real and keg beers.
R.
Great little traditional pub just a few minutes walking distance from Brighton Train Station. Offering a very good selection of real ales, and cider.
N. M.
One of the best pubs in Brighton, and they have Taytos!!
s. g.
With the usual covid restrictions it means there's less places to sit, but the beer is well kept and the staff are friendly.
P. A.
Still my favourite proper boozer in Brighton. Beer is always great. Place is filled with real people rather than Brighton hipsters.
D.
Great quality beer and great selection from this dark star pub, my favourite brewery. It used to be a bit more fresh and vibrant a few years ago, but feeling a bit tired round the edges now.
M. E.
Brilliant beer. Expensive, but worth it. Nice place near the station with friendly staff and excellent drinks.
T. T.
Beers beers and more beers Small rustic pub with very friendly atmosphere and always a good chance of intelligent conversation and dry humour from it's many regulars
S. W.
Best pub in Brighton. Great beer selection, nice atmosphere, always crowded but if you don't mind that then there's no need to go anywhere else
P. C.
Good real ale pub
K. M.
Even in sobriety this is still my fav place to visit in Brighton with great choice of non alcoholic beers on offer too 💕
R. L.
For many years the Star has been at the forefront of Brighton's real ale. It is often the first pub on the camra ale trail and is linked to the nationaly acclaimed brewery, dark Star.
P. M. H. S.
Very interesting selection of beers and super helpful staff. A great pub to visit for beer lovers.
J. M.
Not what it used to be, but still an ace pub
A. R.
Nice little pub near Brighton station, good selection of drinks and staff are friendly. Usually less busy then the pubs in Churchill square.
C. K.
Still great beers, atmosphere and service
J. S.
Before there was craft beer there was the Dark Star brewery and this is where it all started as an outlet. The minimalist look adds to the authenticity while remaining cosy
A. S.
Great choice of beers 8 hand pumps. Large number of bottles. Very friendly no food.
R. B.
It's a great pub with good real ales and atmosphere. However, it's very expensive compered to my local pub; I actually enquired and the same round was almost double the price.
S. O.
Great pub, fantastic range of beers, very knowledgeable staff. Not the most comfortable seating but you don't really notice after a couple of pints do you?
F. B.
I like this pub alot esp early evening on a weekday or sunday night. However the gents need a good bleach scrub not that i went in there but it was quite pongy...wafting into the bar so they need to sort that one out because beer is nice
a. b.
Excellent beer and excellent service made us feel covid secure and enhanced our afternoon
J. M.
Small but cosy wooden-lined pub near Brighton station with a wide range of beers on offer and an antidote to the large, brash boozers thereabouts.
c. s.
Great little pub with an amazing craft beer selection
M. G.
The Dark Star beer in this pub is excellent. Try Hophead. First class brew. One of the best beers around.
D. B.
Probably my favourite pub in Brighton. Great beer, not crazy prices. If they did chips I'd give it 6/5.
p.
Handy place to meet just down the road from the station. Once the best pub by far in Brighton, however it seems to have lost its sparkle of late.
R. T.
A great pub with loads of great beers, particularly Dark Star. Good atmosphere, friendly knowledgeable staff, just by the train station.
D. L.
Best mild beers. Such a selection of well maintained ales. Fresh and perfect
D. C.
If you value first rate beer, served expertly in a room that is meant for nothing more than the appreciation of that and conversation then you must visit the Evening Star. And of course so close to the station!
A. D.
Great friendly pub good beer selection worth a visit
M. F.
Great little pub. Friendly and knowledgable staff. Great selection of beers both local and imported.
c. r.
Best real ale and cider selection in Sussex. Really funny and warm locals! Knowledgeable, kind staff!
A. P.
Good cider, beer and staff! Fantastic selection, nice environment, cheerful people, all around excellent.
L.
A hidden gem serving the best local beer in town. Good prices and friendly staff in a nice cosy atmosphere.
K. A.
Buzzing and busy as usual. I know that this is a 'proper ale' pub but was still disappointed that there was no alcohol free lager or beer available.
A. B.
Proper unpretentious pub for real and craft ale and real pub enthusiasts. Not suitable for a romantic tete a tete but perfect for bar banter.
G. G.
Darkstar brewery beers, the best .
S. B.
Awesome selection of beer and cider. Worth the short walk from the train station if you have a bit of a wait...
S. I.
Excellent craft beer pub. Good range of Dark Star, guest cask and keg, bottles
b. o.
As someone who loves locally brewed beer and small pubs, this place is great. It's not very big inside but there's plenty of standing room.
D. D.
First visit. It's a friendly, traditional pub with very good, well-kept real ale. What more is there to say?
R. S.
Always a good time here, regular rotation of beers, good crowd and bar staff who know their beer
R. W.
Small local pub with its own brewery called Dark Star it also sells guest ale and is the place for craft beer lovers in Brighton
K. M.
Lots of different beers available, nice relaxed atmosphere. A good place to try something different.
M. F.
Amazing selection of beers. Great old school pub for people who like great beer.
p.
Not very good at serving a pint , any thing frothy and you get 10% less beer due to serving a bad pint , sorry to say they serve a better pint in wetherspoons! Fill it up guys!!!
B. C.
Nice pub, great selection of beers. Helpful staff
J. P.
Great beer selction and staff no there stuff. Only down fall is night i went did not smell to nice
K. D.
Very nice pub where it was easy to find a place to sit and chat to friends over a pint of Real Ale
s. m.
Always great beer and great atmosphere.
What's not to like ?
C. A. H.
Has been a constant favourite of mine for the last 15 years.
M. M.
Great local pub, with Vast selection of quality beers. Lots of specials
A. R.
Trappist beers? It's a trap!! Well, it's not a trap, it's real, but drink too many and you might not realise what you got yourself into...
W. P.
Very welcoming and very good with social distance too! Excellent beer and bonhomie!!
C. B.
Great choice of beers, busy station pub. Well worth a visit.
k. a.
The best pub with the best beers in the south of England....and the staff ain't bad too 😊

Quiet, friendly pub with superb selection of beers and brilliant budvar on tap.
P. S.
Nice pub near the station. Recommended for Dark Star beers but not for wi-fi!
D. I.
Great pub, the beer was excellent and very friendly place
G. A.
Excellent selection of real ales and craft beers from Dark Star and other breweries.
C. N.
Nice atmosphere.
Excellent range of beers, though ciders are lacking.
T. F.
One of my favourite pubs. Can be a bit lack lustre on hygiene though, last time I went there was an overpowering stench from the toilet
P. H.
Great range of beer with an ever changing range so you can try something different all the time.
J. P.
A friendly pub with a varied selection of ales to suit all tastes, and colourful clientele. Regular specials on tap.
M. C.
Simply the best pub in Brighton. Fantastic Dark Star beers and many other good brews.
N. M.
Love this place, great beer selection especially cask, which is becoming more and more rare these days
R. B.
Top real ale pub. One of the best in Brighton & just a few yards from the station. A must visit!
C. C.
Off the main drag traditional pub great choice of drinks for the last one before getting the train.
D. K.
If beer is what you're after this is the place to go. Friendly staff and great selection of beers.
D. T.
Busy on Saturday eve, interesting selection of ales (and other stuff too I'm sure). Decent stop-off near the main station.
L. W.
A wide selection of beers but at very high prices. The "distressed" interior is beginning now to look old and shabby
D. A.
A nice place. The bartender knows all about beer and you can test a lot of different beers.
T. W.
The best pub. Ever. Keep doing small batch beer.
L. S.
Great local Brighton place. A must for beer and ale fans.
The true artisan pub.
R. C.
Loads of amazing beers but you're lucky to be able to sit down most of the time.
C. G.
Best pub in Brighton. No fizzy lager multinational piss in here!
h. s.
Nice costy pub with a great selection of beers
d. t.
Great beer still hadn't been in for 8 years and went in Sunday evening. Great as it used to be
S. S.
Great pub, miserable and morose bar staff that seem to be more interested in inflicting their musical tastes than actually filling a glass to the legal level.
M. J. T.
Lovely pub close to the Train Station ,serving my favourite Dark Star ales ,it can only be 5 stars.
G. L.
Nice pub with a great selection of beers & ciders.
A. W.
Lovely pub nr the station, often busy with locals esp summer weekend evenings. Many variations on your pint!
S. R.
I love dark Star beers. Pretty good pub considering it's so close to the station.
M. I.
Great selection of craft beer and real ale. Knowledgeable staff.
J. H.
Very nice atmosphere with a good local beer and cider selection.
T.
A great pub where you will find every kind of person to chat to. And of course, incredible beer!
M. H.
My favourite pub in Brighton. Unrivalled range of beers.
J. J.
Helpful staff, even when busy. Reasonable range of ciders (my preferred tipple).
P. D.
This is the "mothership" of the Dark Star Brewery. Great beers, an intriguing mix of people and knowledgeable service. Hard to fault.
M. M.
Quitet than the average pub in Brighton but fantastic beer and friendly people.
R. H.
Best beer in Brighton Knowledgeable staff, nice atmosphere.
T. N. (.
Solid beer boozer with a grand array of beers stouts and ciders. Keen prices too.
B. B.
