One of Brighton's best kept secrets, this has fast become my favourite bar in the city. They've got a fantastic range of Craft beers and the service is always super friendly.

First time visiting on New Years Day. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Very pleasant staff. Food delicious. We ordered roast chicken. Didn’t have to wait very long and was just right to help us recover from the night before! Delightful interior and tastefully decorated. The place has a nice layout and will certainly be returning!

The menu is on point, great for all types of eaters. Good selection of beers and spirits. Very popular, which is nice, but meant the staff were rushed off their feet and table space runs out fast. Well worth a trek up the hill.

Really friendly local gastro pub. Good quality restaurant standard food. I did have a little moan that my plate was a little sparse, but they kindly gave me a free side of chips and my friends steak was a good size portion. Good beer selection with a few craft ales etc.. even a decent non alcoholic one very welcome for Dry January!

Really enjoyed a great Sunday roast (after a days walking around beachy head, seven sisters, seaford). Inpressed by the staff - relaxed but efficient and attentive - very helpful around my friend's allergy queries. Food was delicious - roast lamb, celeriac puree, various root veg, cabbage and a delicous gravy. My friend also thoroughly enjoyed a glass of the house red.

Impressive selection of local and global beers and a warm welcome. We were impressed with the calm staff after a dog knocked over an entire table of glasses and the owners made a sharp exit. Unflappable and efficient. Will return next time we visit!

Best pub in Brighton by a country mile. Friendly knowledgeable staff that are clearly passionate about the pub and the beer that they sell. A brilliant selection of beer on draft (with there being 14 taps to chose from) with a mixture of both local breweries and ones that are further afield on offer. There is also an off licence / bottle shop that is second to none in the local area or indeed anywhere else I can remember. What’s more, with their delivery service, you can have a beer delivered straight to you house. What can be better than that?!?!?!?

Good friendly local with decent beer at a decent price

Time and time again I go to Brighton in search for a welcoming and warm pub with simplistic food and bubbly beverages. Hell, why is it so hard to find *my place* in the world? My husband tells me that it’s who I am. I’ll never be happy, he says, as he shakes his head and simultaneously sips his beer, happy as a lark on a rock. Sometimes I wonder if he’s right - maybe I should just lighten up. Maybe life is just about *living* - not about getting to the top of my finance company while simultaneously obtaining a black belt while simultaneously finding the perfect pub to get sloshed in after every half marathon that I run. Maybe - but then I found the independent. But then... I tried the salad at the independent. I know: salad? Salad? What could be interesting and life defining that could also fit into a basic bowl made in some ikea factory? Well, for one, never judge an objects power by its size. Ants carry ten times their weight; cacti push pricklers out of their skin while living on 20% of the water they need to survive. That’s courage; salad is no different, and this salad is awesome.

Nice pub with great selection of beer and wine. Food is good / OK depending on whether you eat animals or not! Meat / fish eaters thought the food was well cooked but could have done with more / better sides. Second time I've eaten here and the vegan / veggie options both times were unexciting and not particularly flavoursome or well-cooked.

A pub that really focuses on food, which it does well. As a veggie I felt the choice was a bit limited and uninspired for the ambiance they are trying to create. However, what they did was excellent. Good selection of drinks. Would happily return if someone suggested it but I am unlikely to suggest it myself. If you haven't been, visit and make your own mind up, many of my friends rate it highly, if I could give half stars it would be 4.5.

We are so lucky to have the Independent near our home. Serving the best food in Hanover and always accommodating for last minute reservation (you need to book because they are so popular). The service is excellent, great team of people and they make a fab Bloody Mary ! Really nice wine list too and always great beer on tap.

Definitely a local fave. Nice atmosphere and good food and ales. Slightly let down as a little too dog friendly sometimes. When you're not a dog lover, having a couple of pooches sat on the same bench seat next to you whilst you eat your food can be a little off-putting. Staff are friendly too and prices aren't too bad.

Deceptively large pub on Queens Park Road, compared to the small appearance outside. Large selection of local ales and beers, lagers and spirits available for a modest cost. Non exhaustive menu during the day, but advisable to book for their Sunday roasts. Great looking and clean venue with friendly and helpful staff, what more could you want? Live jazz on Wednesdays and occasional djs on weekends

Lovely Sunday lunch. I had squid starter and Sussex Blue cheese and courgette tart. Husband had prawns with peppers and chorizo followed by roast beef. Excellent quality, managable portions, friendly service and ambience,. More relaxed restaurant than pubby stay-all-afternoon with the paper, but quite a hidden gem. We will be back.

Been wanting to go to this little pub for some time. Im from worthing but finally made it and i wasnt dissapointed. They have a great selection of craft beers and it got me excited. We live just up the road and go here quite a lot for a bite or dinner, or just a pint. It works brilliantly for any of those options :) And, it houses a branch of the Smallest Bookshop in Brighton so you can also buy some surprising literature whilst partaking of their excellent food!
