Reviews of Hall & Woodhouse Portishead, Bristol

Delicious food. Whatever you choose to eat, it's always very nice and fresh. Crunchy fish&chips smell lovely and so they taste. Hake on couscous and veggies , mmm yummy..
We love the staff and often pop for a drink only too. Lovely local place, looks so cosy now at Christmas 🎄
C. S.
Things have improved here lately. They have a good choice of food now.
Very friendly staff and also very dog friendly too.
Enjoy coming here for coffees and for brunch too.
I had the sausage and mash and my friend had the Vegan duck salad it was very good.
Nice outdoor sitting area's too.
Tuesday evenings Quiz night at 7.30 pm

Great staff, amazing position. Well worth a visit.
N. W.
Cool pub/bar/restaurant and coffee shop/event space built with shipping containers over an old flint quarry. Worth a visit.

Following a family funeral we had drinks and a buffet upstairs in the restaurant where we had exclusive use. We ordered a buffet for 75 people and over 100 turned up. There was plenty of food left over and they even put a coffee machine out with free coffee.
Michael the deputy general manager went above and beyond his duty he really looked after all of us and was great with the children. Thank you Michael you done us proud kevin
C. S.
Great food, friendly staff and a lovely view of the marina.
S. W.
Lovely place.... Great staff..
But we had a roast beef dinner Sunday... They were busy so an hour wait was OK.. Potatoes and Yorkshire pudding great... But beef was thin and fatty.. The veg luke warm. ....was a shame.. I didn't want to upset staff.. And we needed to get on... Or I would've said something
D.
This is such a great pub/restaurant.
The décor and furnishings are lovely and comfy too.
The menu is delicious, with enough meat and dairy free options. I had the burger which was so more-ish, and the fruit crumble with dairy free ice cream.
Staff are all super friendly, so thanks for a great dining experience.

Fantastic place, great for a cup of coffee and a cake, to a full meal. Quirky construction, built of old shipping containers, and it is wonderfully comfortable inside.
The staff are what makes for a good restaurant...or pub...and H&W staff are all excellent.
There are a few car parking spaces outside the building, and more exist in the car park behind the building opposite. Be aware of the colour coding....and don't get caught out! Otherwise it's street parking and a walk in.
Further to my earlier writing, we held our reunion for 40 former Merchant Navy Officers and the staff from H&W were wonderful, the food was brought from the kitchen to the tables in a timely manner. Everyone was impressed by the standard of the food...and the service. Thank you to everyone serving on the night.
W. A.
Excellent everything. Location, interior, service, quality of food, attention to detail (fudge sweet with my coffee) and reasonably priced.
Tartar sauce a bit too garlicky for me but thats being picky. Overall top score.
A. S.
My meal was microwaved! Was as hot as lava! The flat bread was like a shoe sole! Shame as I had a tangine and it was very tasty. The choc brownie was too hot to eat! My partner had a chicken flatbread and that was fresh (the bread anyway) because it's a restaurant, I don't expect microwaved food. Even though i pre booked we were sat on our own not in the main restaurant, someone walked in and got a seat in the main restaurant :(
C. S.
Went there with a friend who found it on a Britain's quirkiest pub guide. Great location offering 2 levels of service with a dog friendly lower dining area. Good food and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.
E. R.
Great place for a drink. The decoration is unbelievable and great variety of beers 🍻!
P. H.
Atmosphere and staff are great. Average choice of beers and ciders. The food is mediocre at best. At £14-£15 for a burger it should be better. Dry and boring. Not much better than a burger from McDonald's. Better and less expensive places to eat available near by. Ok for a beer on a sunny day.
H. J.
One of the very best meals we’ve had ‘out’ at any price: imaginatively constructed, beautifully cooked, promptly served by exceptionally pleasant and helpful staff and all at a price that is more than kind to the wallet. Our dog was made as welcome as we were and we would return at any time without hesitation!
S. N.
Lovely place. Nice decor, very cool location and loved the vibe it has. A nice relaxed place is a great location to eat and drink if in Portishead I'd highly recommend a visit
Had breakfast and went back for dinner the food was that good.
J. B.
Lovely welcome for us and Freddie. Very friendly staff, sorry I didn't catch your names, but lady was a fellow dog owner. Came for coffee and cake oh...and a dog biscuit or two
N. H.
Fabulous, food really nice and not expensive. Staff very helpful and friendly, you can even take your dog. I would highly recommend.
R. D.
Saturday evening. Nice service in a very pleasant venue - an interesting design right by the marina. Food was good; could have been better if the whitebait was crisper and the tempura-style cauliflower (which tasted good) was cut smaller and, again, crisper.
m. d.
Great beer great price, great food.
I must have posted this review sometime ago. I went in July 2022. Poor, expensive food. Not enough staff
J. M.
Very spacious interior, excellent service and a good range of beers, gin and non-alcoholic drinks and mocktails.
The Hall and Woodhouse chain is consistently good and still feels local despite its group size. I visit the Bath one regularly.
In this Portishead pub you have many dining and drinking areas, even some quirky private dining spaces. We sat upstairs and played Scrabble on the evening we visited, it's a quieter space upstairs but you can still enjoy the buzz of the pub. A bar on this floor also means you haven't got to get up and down the stairs with drinks.
C. A. B.
Fantastic food, service excellent, we could not fault our lunch, we will return when we are next in portishead, dog friendly and very kind and polite staff, thank you for the wonderful experience,
I. H.
Really delicious food here, Sunday lunch is great and not very expensive but if you fancy a nicer meal I’d recommended it also! For me the desserts this place offers are exceptional.
No real downside apart from the price for their everyday menus. Really nice staff here too!
D. C.
Good food! Nice athmosphere
s. s.
Fantastic food and friendly atmosphere and great service. Always busy and buzzing inside and outside too ...
C. F.
Slow wait but it was a sunday 3 of us 2 having roasts one having burger. Roast was one of the worst roasts i have ever had i had beef another had chicken chicken dry and beef overcooked veg undercooked. Shame
I. T.
Great place to go for coffee and cake or even a meal.
Does have a gluten free menu too.
G. S.
Spacious interior with outdoor seating. Food and good selection of beers and spirits. Friendly staff
f. f.
I was hosting guests from out of town and they had a lovely time and enjoyed the lunch here. It was not overly busy. They accommodated the special request made when booking. Food was good, much better than any I've had in the other restaurants in the vicinity. Service and staff were lovely. I would visit again.
M. B.
When we arrived, It wasn’t clear how table service works. Took 45 minutes to tell us that they didn’t have soya milk for lattes. Got the drinks order slightly wrong. The waiter was excellent, polite and helpful (Harrison). Food was ok. Burger bun was stale. So badly wanted the place to do well as it looks nice and is in such a nice spot. Pity.
G. H.
Hall and Woodhouse is built using old shipping containers which, in itself is, is interesting. It has just a few parking spaces but that is a little limited. The food was okish but wasn't particularly hot being served on cold plates. Some of the meat was a bit tough too. The service was good and efficient.
P. C.
Staff excellent only complaint was it was very cold in the end we sat with our coats on
D. M.
Dog friendly with excellent food. The band playing over lunchtime created an excellent atmosphere
A. C.
Best location in Marina Portishead, with great customer focus and really good products. Exceptional Fish&chips. Good attention to details makes each visitor feel important.
M. P.
Only a quick visit for a drink, staff friendly and enjoyed having time my son's dog Chester
J. E.
Nice atmosphere, good choice of drinks, but the food was very disappointing
P. K.
Service was great. Food was ok. It's just another pub with a view on a car park.
J. C.
First time here, absolutely fabulous friendly staff, food was great and spoilt the dog with treats and affection too! Will be back.
K. T.
Great service today from Joe. He looked after us so brilliantly I felt I had to ask his name and leave this review.
A. V.
Large modern comfortable really dog friendly (downstairs) serving good coffee and yummy food & snacks and normally what looked like delicious cakes 🍰 , unfortunately on the day we visited they had ran out of cake at 4 pm but I saw other people with cake.
All staff are really friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed.
C. M.
Had breakfast there.Brillient because we could use our Blue light card and get some money off.Food was good.
E. T.
Lovely place to eat, food was amazing and excellent staff.
T. E.
Nice menu and great food, far better than average pub grub
m. k.
Had a fab meal found was very tasty meal and the service was excellent. The waiter was so helpful I can’t remember his name unfortunately. Young chap talk with dark hair.
The wine was the best I’ve tasted. Would recommend.
P. D.
Had Sunday Roast, was very impressed. Partner had veggie option (she is not veggie but didn't fancy the chicken), she loved it. Service is very good. Drinks, like most places however, are quite expensive. Still, I would definitely recommend and go back for more food.
A. O.
Simon was a real gem tonight. Despite me having plenty to pay for my drink, my csrd simply would not process the transaction. Simon allowed me to take my drink and pay tomorrow and I really appreciate the trust that he placed in me to do so. Coupled with the friendly atmosphere, I will definitely recommend Hall and Woodhouse to anyone wishing to sink a drop of the amber in Portishead. Much appreciated and I will be baci soon
T. B.
Lovely location, good food and quick service...we will be coming back!
J. P.
Was a really nice place to eat. Previously ate at the one in Bath so was pleased to find one in Portishead. We chose vegan options on the menu and they tasted great. Lots of choice of beer too (obviously). Highly recommended.
P. W.
Nice food, friendly staff, good selection of drinks.
H. K.
Nice modern pub with food, good environment, nice menu, friendly staff, car parking is a oroblem.
Good view of the docks.
C. H.
Boxing day food, okay but had to wait a long time.asked for 3 coffees at end of 3 course meal waited ages when it arrived with no sugar and no spoon we were told he was bery busy downstairs, and had run out🤐he was very rude!! Bad attitude as we were paying customers 6 people,he said he would look came back saying we were very lucky as last 2 teaspoon and found sugar.
Not a bit impressed with this person, not our fault they could not cope with customers.
L. C.
Pretty good overall. You can expect good value family fare with more veggie options than we were expecting. Fast service and yummy Yorkshire puddings.
D. M.
Excellent food and service but parking dreadful, simply not enough spaces for the size of the venue.Travelled some distance as a mid point to meet friends, so no realistic alternative than to drive! How did it get planning permission? Staff member helpfully told me not to park at the rear which is permit parking.
N. H.
Went for drinks with friends , family on Thursday eve, busy enough nice decor we sat in sofas next to a closed fire, very casual and warm. Good selection of drinks, they close at 10pm Mon-Thurs, a little early, nevermind, and 11 on Fri. Didn't try food prob will next time.
D. B.
Had a meal here staff nice, good views over Marina, food okay, but overpriced .
M. M.
Nice venue, staff can be a little slow on occasion. Biggest irritation is the inability to open a tab. Knocked off a star for that.
Would go back as the interior is relaxing and has an outdoor area.
D. L.
The venue is great, service was good although visited on a quiet day. The food is very average some of it had no flavour at all. Cocktails average too, had better ones in wetherspoons.
S. W.
Excellent meal, good value and cocktails were excellent. Our two waitresses were excellent, I'm so sorry I am unable to recall the names. Both working the evening of 7tb Oct 2021. We had stopped for the night on our way to Devon and needed dinner, we had quite a few options but glad we chose here!
r. b.
Nice view from toilets!
Shame about high prices and long wait for food...
M. H.
Visited here with friends and family. We had a frosty reception from the female manager who greeted us by saying we had to sit outside and there was a backlog on the food due to delay in delivery. Just a "hello, welcome, we have seats outside...oh, and there's a slight delay on food" would've been better! The food was nice, well presented and the other staff members were super friendly.
T. S.
Lovely location and really friendly helpful staff. I had fish and chips, fish was very dry and mostly batter. My friend ordered a flat bread with chips, chips arrived 20 mins later (even though we chased when the meal arrived). Offered round of drinks as an apology. Desserts were really lovely!
P. O.
Nice atmosphere with a relaxed feel. Quiz night on Tuesday is good as well. Beware the parking setup here though, easy to get a fine if you park at the front of the restaurant.
M. L.
Beautiful modern building. ❤️ Excellent service, 👍 food. Lift provided to eat upstairs.
r. h.
Unusual place partly made out of shipping containers. Good food and reasonable prices.
J. N.
Had two meals here recently. Food is good, and service very friendly and professional. The steak was excellent, also can recommend the fish and chips and the steak pie. They are not doing bookings, so you just turn up on spec, but it is obvious if there is room and the booking in and seating system seems to work well.
k. s.
Visited here for a family meal post-lockdown for a treat and the food was outstanding. The 4 stars were purely for the food. Unfortunately, although the staff were friendly, the service really was lacking. We had to ask every single time for drinks/to order to food/for the table to be cleared and it took a long time for the bill to come and then we had to ask to pay as well. In the end, we had to use the app to order pudding because it was so difficult to order, despite there seeming to be a lot of staff working. Such a shame when the food was so nice.
J. G.
Excellent food this evening, the service was second to none thanks to the very polite and courteous Harrison. Lovely atmosphere and Harrison smiled and his humour shone through. Hope we are servedcby him and Natalie next time. Thank you.
R. F.
Lovely food and a great atmosphere.
t. R.
Mixed bag.
First waiter we had was lovely. The waitress that followed was a bit of a dope. Took my cider to a nearby table that had clearly finished and were about to leave. Plonked it down without saying anything. It sat there until the chap shouted across to me to ask if it might be mine. Not very hygienic.
We ordered 2 flatbreads, at £9 each. A mini pizza really. My husband's was fine, mine was as if it had been accidentally dropped in the deep fat fryer and fished out. It actually tasted okay.
My advice is to walk to the next block and eat at Sea Rock.
F. M.
What a lovely two hours I had today catching up with a friend. Josh served us and gave us a great insight to the range of teas they have. Next visit will be trying the new menu, & maybe a cheeky glass of fizz. Great staff, a very positive experience.
K. B.
Nice venue with friendly staff. Food okay but quite expensive. Careful when parking. Pub apparently has a car park but we ended up in a permit area without realising it and were fined.
U. U.
Second visit here the first was just drinks which were lovely and the second was food and drinks. The venue and location is absolutely stunning! Unfortunately the food is a little disappointing. The menu seems very random and only has a few gluten free options which are not indicated in the menu, they don't have a separate gluten free menu either just a separate folder with all the ingredients which makes looking through the menu very time consuming and a bit stressful- a simple GF available sign next to food in main menu would of been perfect! I had a smoked duck salad which was fine but a little boring and we also ordered chicken ceser salad and the pie which looked nice. Really hope the menu improves a bit and they accommodate for all, until then think we'll just visit for drinks!
D. F.
My second visit to this ingenious building since Lockdown. Purpose was to have coffee with a group of friends.
Most efficient and welcoming entry system once you understand it. Good natured reception and service. Although we stayed for ages and had only one drink each we were left in peace to chat for as long as we wanted to. My decaff Americano with hot milk on the side was as good as a decaff gets. Each of us had a different drink, various coffees and soft drinks. One even indulged in the generous coffee and cake offer!! I might, next visit, and there will be a next visit!!
One way access to the lavatories (great view of marina) at this tricky period in our world's time line is a bit convoluted but necessary and involves stairs.. quite a long but well signposted route. There is an accessible loo on the ground floor. All in all a Comfortable and worthwhile experience.
D. H.
Very pleasant staff. The place is dog friendly, providing water bowls and dog treats.
The rating refers only to drinks there and not to the food, which we did not sample. That said, we will be back.
S.
Nice place near the marina. Cold windy day outside . Nice and warm clean pub . Waited awhile for food , due to covid staff shortage. Food was good . Very friendly bar staff .
S.
Nice place, lovely staff! Ground floor unfortunately doesn't have much interesting in way of views as it's just next to a car park, the upper floor was closed when we hissed, although the views are nicer up there. If you want to sit outside and look at the marina its not the right spot for it, although didn't find many places here were to be fair
s. b.
Very good food, lively atmosphere
D. P.
Just been to the weekly quiz and it was really good. The quiz master is brilliant.
A. H.
Great location, parking is limited but there is on street parking around, just be respectful when doing so. Food was good and served within a reasonable time, decor and atmosphere good.
m. S.
Service good, food good although we didn't gey exactly what we asked for. A little overpriced I think
E. C.
Loved it!
Food was really nice, just what we wanted!
Very dog friendly, she was given a treat and a water bowl, we were sat by a window and the staff were really lovely!
100% reccomend!!
R. J.
Popular eating and drinking establishment in Portishead. A slightly improved menu with the welcomed addition of a few vegan options. Service has quickened since I last visited and food tasted great. We have a good experience.
N. M.
We had a lovely steak and triple cooked chips which were delicious. It was a comfortable environment with good safety precautions in place. The 90 minute max stay is understood so as to maximise customers with more space required, but can be a little limiting. Otherwise, very good.
S. A.
It's a lovely place lovely staff and helpful but just a little bit expensive.
o. w.
Slow and slightly chaotic service the night I visited, steak was cold but tasty, calamari part of starters overcooked, forgot part of order. But staff friendly and accommodating although completely over stretched. Good choice of drinks and varied menu. Unusual, interesting decor. Would probably visit again as more good than bad. Was compensated for gripes.
k. m.
Nice food but slow service, probably due to lack of hospitality staff.
A. H.
Nice place set in the harbour, nice outside seating
J. M.
So we randomly found this place and without hesitation can give it 5 stars! Just fab 😃
Friendly staff, fantastic food and a great vibe on a Friday night. Expect to be sharing a table at 8pm on a Friday night. About half a dozen friendly dogs wandering about chilling with free water and gravy bones. Human bar snacks looked good too! Our evening meal was top notch.
s. l.
One of the nicest place I have visited so far. Highly recommend this place. Best Sunday roast beef ever. The gravy was really nice. If anyone wants to taste food with actually taste I highly recommend this place.
S. G.
Lovely friendly place can have just a drink, or Coffee&cake--great deal on that) or a full meal as you wish.
A. C.
Well we read your reviews ,which were not particularly good ,and I must agree ,our fish &chips were Sat waiting several minutes before being brought to table ,so were not piping hot ,mushy peas were cold ,over all disappointed ,food used to be good what has gone wrong ,needs big sorting out .
D. P.
Hall & Woodhouse was a lovely restaurant with great views next to the marina.
However, when my wife and I visited on 1st October, we were presented with a new menu that was starting from that very day. Disappointingly most of the menu was unavailable because they didn't have the ingredients. I'm not sure how far in advance this place starts planning for new dishes, but clearly not long enough.
What we did order though was very good and a reasonable price. Would definitely return.
N. T.
Nice bears, friendly can take dogs
R. G.
Myself and my wife have been here a few times. Literally have nothing negative to say. Really helpful staff, good food, good atmosphere. Even things like cleanliness of the toilets makes this place a positive experience.
A. R.
I always love the atmosphere of Hall & Woodhouse, especially for brunch and being able to bring my dog. The food can be lovely, however there have been several times where I have been and somethings not gone well. Most recently, I came at the weekend with my friends for brunch, our menus had different time descriptions but that's fine. The prices on some of the items were different to the menu description when we paid at the bar. Three of us received our brunch and finished before our friend received hers, when we questioned it at the bar we were told there was a problem in the kitchen (they had forgotten it) and they were making it then. It's frustrating that quite a few things haven't run smoothly on multiple visits as I keep returning hoping it will be great as we love the place and the atmosphere so much. It would also be good if the brunch menu was on the website as well.
Thank you
N. P.
Love this pub and so do our rescue dogs. So lucky to have this close to our house. Great decor and super friendly staff
L. G.
Good food choice and great location, shame its closes kind of early in the evenings
S. H.
Came here for a private event. The service was slow and they knew the size of our party. Took a long time to take our order but then food arrived reasonably quickly. Another place that thinks it's acceptable to serve hot food on cold plates! Food was good but got cold quickly.
P. P.
We live quite close to Hall and Woodhouse, and pop in for coffee and a glass of wine, which we always enjoy. The bar staff are brilliant , especially Steve who is always in charge of the Coffee. Our biggest disappointment is the food and the service!!! We have eaten downstairs and twice the order was taken down incorrectly. Then we had to wait such a long time for the food to arrive. I really hope the food and the restaurant service improves.
H. D.
We stopped here on the way home to wilts with two small grandchildren, we had a brilliant welcome and allowed to choose our table to let the children see the boats outside , the children were allowed to go and choose their cakes and ice cream and drinks by our host he even remembered their names , sorry I didn’t get his name but he remembered Finley and Evie, wonderful lemon drizzle cake and loose leaf Earl grey tea plus ice creams thank you so much you made our day xxxx
S. B.
Excellent 'local' although it's far more than that. Great beer, food, and exemplary service. Can be a victim of its own success in busy periods like summery Sunday afternoons. Just lean into it and enjoy.
J. P.
Nice place to stop for a drink, we did have food, unfortunately 2 out of 4 Sunday roast had sold out & pie by 2:30pm, so ordered one Malaysian Aubergine curry this was delicious also a Parsnip & nut roast with pig in blankets, they found the nut roast a bit dense & cake like! The other two ordered fish & chips the batter was very dry & nearly burnt, so the food wasn't the we have had, we will try again & hopefully have the choice of all of your Sunday roast to choose from, as 2:30pm on a Sunday is very early to be sold out & it wasn't very busy, plenty of empty tables.
S. G.
Good food, though a dirty restaurant - needs a proper clean after each sitting... Tables were sticky and food on chair seats.
The choice of food is both creative and innovative, the Buddha bowl is superb and the falafel were perfectly turned.
Choice of beers is fairly good too and the price is ok for a pub dining experience.
Lost two stars for cleanliness
C. H.
Although Google reviews are largely good; others were not so positive, so I was pleasantly surprised by this modern looking restaurant.
The food is good value, not the best, but very good; it also has a wide selection of vegetarian food, and all at reasonable prices.
Not all the staff seemed experienced but all were very keen, polite, and eager to please, something I prefer over disinterested, experienced staff.
The exterior is shocking and interesting and the interior is thoughtfully decorated which helps create the vibrant atmosphere.
While H&W wouldn't suit a very quiet, intimate, dinner for two (as it's not a quiet place), it's ambiance is good enough for most occasions and it won't break the bank if it's not an occasion. This is certainly one of the best restaurants in the area.
K. S.
From entrance to exit the staff were very friendly and helpful. There is plenty of safety measures in place for covid. A good choice of food and it all tasted very delicious. My only criticism is that I think its over priced for what u get. But in all a lovely place to eat.
J. D.
Great food and drink, nice atmosphere and lovely surroundings.
S. P.
Fantastic! Food was brilliant but the service was exceptional! Every member of staff we met were friendly, helpful and very welcoming
G. J.
Friendly atmosphere good views over the marina
S. W.
Really enjoyed my visit here for a weekday lunch get-together with friends. Friendly & helpful service, food lush and a nice, unusual veggie selection on the menu. I had a tasty 'houmous & veggies' flatbread; the fish & chips and burger & fries my friends ordered also looked nice. Usual selection of drinks at the bar. Would have been a pleasant place to sit outside to eat & drink on a nicer day, weather-wise, than we had, as it's positioned at Portishead Marina. Looking forward to returning to Hall & Woodhouse again at some point in the near future :)
C. P.
For a bank bank holiday, not that busy, but prices are fairly high. Good choice of ales etc but service a bit to be desired.
l. s.
Really good Covid-19 prep and felt really safe. Food was delicious and well priced. Only reason 4 stars was that at 2.15, there were no more roast dinner choices.
P. B.
Get the scotch eggs you won't regret it
C. G.
Only went for a meeting and a drink, staff were lovely, the building was clean and welcoming
j. h.
Stopped off for a drink with my partner whilst travelling from wales to Cornwall. Was impressed with how polite and attentive all staff members were. Also, they appear to be taking the lockdown measures seriously, and have implemented appropriate safety measures. Jon
K. S.
Decent enough if you get a seat. Suits bigger parties rather than couples as it's quite noisy. Christmas dinner upstairs was a much more civilized affair and the food was superb quality. Huge portions.
M. F.
Good menu variety and generally good food in pleasant setting. Not sure if we caught them at a bad time after Christmas, but service was poor. Nobody came back to check if our main courses were okay - one of five wasn't - over the course of 20 mins and nobody took our dessert order over another 10-15 mins. Upstairs where were seated wasn't exactly busy either.
l. a.
Nice place, good atmosphere, but the vegetarian Moroccan tagline was not good. Sauce was too runny, veg was big lumps and not cooked.
C. B.
Went for coffee. Coffee a bit small but very good cake and good service
Went for dinner. Very poor
T. M.
Staff really nice and friendly. Dogs welcome. Food nice . A bit expensive for what it is .

Service was great, meal was average.
Roast spuds could have been crispy, veg was all fresh and cooked well, however beans were clearly old and shrivelled. Pork was tough and not from a joint as thick chops rather than sliced, beef ran out and some being cooked but wasn't ready for 45 mins, chicken was ok. Pigs in blankets were top, cauliflower cheese not veey cheesy, Yorkshire puds overcooked and frozen.
Good range of ales, not expensive.
Nice surroundings
Super Dog friendly, inside and out
D. A.
Great atmosphere and selection of beers
J. H.
Went in the dark, but I think the views would be impressive in the daytime. Some nice draught beers and a good menu. The fish platter was very good and highly recommend. Only let down was the butter with the bread was straight from out of the fridge!
C. W.
A fabulous meal in a great restaurant. The food was cooked to perfection and served beautifully. I had the beetroot carpaccio starter, stone bass main course and torte dessert.........all of which I would have again (as it was that good)!!
The location is in the marina area of Portishead with limited on site parking which we were lucky enough to secure. The atmosphere was superb with wonderful live jazz being played.
Jodie looked after us and was a great help whenever we asked for more info or sought clarification. A night to remember and well worth repeating.
R. W.
Great decor. Food varied, some far better than others. Great selection of spirits and beers. Atmosphere really buzzing. Staff generally good however one staff member needed training on how to speak to customers.
m. k.
Comfy seats. Good coffee. Pleasant view of the marina.
L. T.
Come here every Friday during lunch break. Great quality food, but a bit on the expensive side. Friendly staff which changes almost on a weekly basis, sometimes very slow service, often forgotten or took so long our lunch break was almost over. Expensive drinks but nice and homely atmosphere. Free WiFi. Would get full stars if prices were reasonable.
T. H.
It is a really nice pub. Quirky design and plenty of space to sit outside if you want. It would be higher rating but watch out for beer prices. £5.10 for a pint is crazy.
K. T.
Food was ok, but it was my third choice, as they were out of salads
H. W.
A lovely spot on the waterfront, with tonnes of space and decent service. The burger I had was a claggy formless mass of meat and cheese. I'd have honestly preferred the delineated enjoyment of a Big Mac — and they're a hell of a lot cheaper.
b. b.
We stopped here after a cycle and was greeted with amazing customer service. The food was prompt and high quality. We'll be stopping there again soon, they're very professional and accommodating.
K. H.
Great pub/restaurant with good service and nice food.

Went here for the first time for a Christmas meal and celebration in a group of 42. The staff were lovely and I enjoyed the beer - they had a good pint of Pale Ale on Draft - Wyvern. Lovely Christmas atmosphere with super Christmas tree in the upstairs room. The bad bit: My starter from the Christmas menu was okay- salmon - but seemed very small compared to the pork starter my neighbour had. For the main meal I ordered the Nut Roast Wellington. I was served last of the group. I was very disappointed by the Nut Roast. A better description of it would have been : miniature nut roast pastry. It was 2inches by 2 inches and about half an inch thick. Nothing like any Wellington or en croute I’ve ever seen. The vegetables were great. I just felt they could have given me a few of those pastries and / or more vegetables. My neighbour had half a plate full of turkey in comparison. So if you are vegetarian and order the Christmas meal you’ll finish the meal still feeling hungry as I did.
H. H.
Friendly staff
Delicious food
R. F.
Food was good quality. Let down by the service. There were 3 in our group and the food for 2 of us arrived but without the side orders. The third meal arrived after the first meals had been finished. The side orders arriving before the third meal. So our meal was disjointed which soured the otherwise enjoyable meal. Disappointed with the service.
M. A.
Lovely place and great coffee
J. H.
Went to the Hall & Woodhouse at Portishead with the family as a Father's Day treat, the service was slow but no less than expected on a Father's Day at any restaurant .
That said the whole experience exceeded my expectations as the 'father's were invited to draw their own free pint and in addition a 'take away' gift pack of two bottles of ale.
The meal was very good value.
L. L.
So glad this is my local, great atmosphere, lovely drinks (best aperol spritz outside of Italy). Cost outdoor seating area. I just wish they had more events such as live music etc!
D. B.
It looked OK from the outside but we were doing about 25mph & didn't stop Google may want to check how long someone is in a location when they are spying on them before asking for a review. I'm guessing Google get paid if people review this location as it doesn't seem interested in the locations we actually went to.
I. A. B.
Live within walking distance of this establishment and used to love calling in for 'tea and biscuits' on way home from shopping. Not liking too much all the young mums taking up whole seating spaces with buggies and toddlers, it's an 'adult' place for me. Used to love having the odd brunch and evening meal as I enjoy the whole ambiance of the place. Sadly now I've been 'priced out' of eating there anymore. I absolutely refuse to pay £6.25? for a small dessert, extortion! The menu has changed far too many times and I no longer enjoy the experience of visiting. Looks like Wetherspoon for me.......
K. G.
Good food in pleasant surrounds with the harbour as a backdrop.
Sunny day does add to thepleasure.Parking can be a problem.if on foot no problem. As with most of HW. properties they are well sited.town -country..
Prices on par with other brewers food etc..The build is quite unique but will leave that for other people to explore.
L. E.
Really nice experience', staff were great 🙏🕉🧙♂️
K. P.
This review is for breakfast/brunch which was pretty average. Frankly if you're only serving a very limited menu everything should be bang on it just wasn't.
"Crispy" bacon was just dry from clearly being left under a warming light for ages as were the sausages, flat mushrooms obviously hadn't been bought and were replaced with three very sorry looking button mushrooms. I can't say I know what a "split tin loaf" is, which is apparently what the toast was made from but from what I was served it seemed like someone had nipped across the marina to Lidle and bought a cheap sliced loaf.
Someone in the kitchen clearly does know how to cook / cares about what they serve up as the poached eggs were perfect but for a restaurant that has probably the overall best combination of location, decor and service in the area the food should be a lot better.
P. T.
First visit to this place, they had alcohol free beer on draft (first time I've ever saw that), lovely spacious atmosphere, clean, warm, right next to the docks, nice staff, would go again if I was in the area.
J. B.
Can't fault it. Fish fingers in a cob yum yum.
J. m.
Nice atmosphere. Attentive staff. Well positioned on waterfront. Had the Sunday roast which I thought was beautiful.
L. P.
No food on a Friday night. ......first time I have ever been there no sweet Rose wine only really dry. ....place was buzzing though. .prices really high. ...wouldn't want it as my local. ....may pop in again. ..but won't be rushing to!
S. D.
Lovely decor, friendly service and a great selection of food and wine. My only gripe was that my Cesar salad was drenched in dressing while I prefer having a little less, however that's just a personal preference! Would recommend H&W, the building is made out of shipping containers and you have a great view of the marina.
G. B.
Great service, fantastic food, relaxing atmosphere, we will be back soon!
P. T.
All a bit disorganised on the day went. Items missed off the order, staff dropping stuff. The food was average at best, the fishfinger sandwich was very basic and had the skinnyest fish fingers I have ever seen.
A. G.
Not the cheapest place for a drink, but it has a good atmosphere and relaxed feel. It's also a very interesting building, being as it's made up of old shipping creates. Well worth a visit.
M. W.
Firstly, I'd like to say how good the service from Chloe the waitress was.
Breakfast, however, was disappointing: £7.50 without a drink. One(!) sausage, one(!) mushroom. Two rashers of ordinary bacon. A choice of beans or tomatoes, where the tomatoes turned out to be _half_ a tomato. Ingredients were average.
Chloe, however, listened carefully to the feedback, did her best to keep us happy, and suggested we return in a month as breakfast was still an area they were working on.
If I return again, I'll report back on progress.
In the meantime, the definitive breakfast remains Rosemarino in Clifton, Bristol.
R.
Lovely dark chocolate mocha and coffees. Service was bit slow however. Nice location by the marina.
A. G. U.
Food and service were quite good...., but very expensive food and drinks here...., burgers overpriced, fries a bit mean portioned and very small as well as too salty, besides all that not bad to OKish, it's OK if you come here only very occasionally for special occasions perhaps unless your comparatively well off to rich financially. Maybe the residents are in these parts!? Decor, chairs, tables, carpets look very dirty and scruffy especially considering your spending a small fortune on food and drink in this place! We've been to far better looking surroundings, far cheaper food and drink establishments than this which has tasted better or at the very least the same but not wicked on your wallet!
P. V. (.
We love this eatery and would certainly recommend ..It's clean, its Safe and it's very welcoming.. great place to go and relax to enjoy a great evening out with friends.. Excellent
G. H.
Excellent meal Thursday evening, the food quality was excellent and the service from Simon was top quality.
L.
I've just moved to Portishead and only been in here once but it was a lovely experience, came on Thursday which is open mic night, heard some great singing and had a nice beer 😊 the staff seem friendly and the atmosphere was chill. Will be coming back for sure! :)
S. E.
Lovely location, the staff are nice and friendly and the place has a nice cosy feel. Only slight downside is the price point for food. On the whole though it's a nice place for a casual drink or a lovely meal.
N. C.
Decent setting, turned up for sunday roast without booking and found a table. Great small rooms in containers. Ideal for containing children. Food good.
L. H.
Nice scenery and a good selection of alcohol. Can be too busy, and parking is a nightmare. Don't park around the back, you'll get a 'parking fee' from a private company who think they're the council.
B. C.
Absolutely perfect service - Covid measures all very slick and easy to understand, friendly staff, delicious food and lovely activity packs for the kids!
M.
Really lovely food and atmosphere. The staff were all really professional and welcoming.
R. G.
Good food but had to wait for some much longer than the rest. Bar staff were apologetic and rectified by giving us free drinks
T. M.
Great space... chill or party! Always seems friendly. If your walking the marina on a chilly day....be cosy with the wood burner and a beverage. Can even take the dog. Pub works well for all.
M. B.
Lunch with family incl young children. Seem to have timed it well, food was very good and arrived in good time. Service was very friendly so would happily recommend to others.
R. M.
Ooooh my God, the food 😍 the service 😍 I just want stay and eat the all menu, tasty wonderful my steak was the best, everyone who came with me loved it 😍😍😍😍😇
w. s.
Great venue. Have been here for social occasions and recently for a wake. Food is excellent. Staff are incredibly helpful. Highly recommend this place.
V. D.
Went for New year eve celebration. Had a brilliant meal. Service was excellent and the magician was outstanding. Stayed for disco great atmosphere all night.
A. B.
We love H&W. My favourite time is midweek and early mornings. Not only are the staff brilliant but H&W have some lovely regular events sich as quizzes and jazz. In addition, I'm thankful that they also support arts in our community, recently with sculpture, and life drawing bringing everyome together.
C. T.
Interesting building made from Containers! Located next the Marina at Portishead. You can watch the boats. Busy most of the time as there is a lot of housing around there. Food and drinks are good with a specials menu, but a bit pricey. Parking is available if you can find a place, but be sure you are parking in the right space near the boat yard. The large area in front of the restaurant is reserved for Marina Berth holders, and unauthorised cars will be photographed and you will receive a fine in the post!
R. F.
Nice pub on the marina
C. B.
Great location, great environment, decent beer. Recent menu changes (big price rises) and removing of a lot of the snack menu options mean it is an expensive way to eat casual food or have a beer.
R. M.
Well done Josh and Chloe...
R. K.
Pub made of cargo ship containers. Stylish. Staff are happy, content. Fight for sitting space outside in the Summer. Closes too early. Was asked to leave at 11:30pm. Can't party; can socialise. Chips not as good as the Lamplighters in Avonmouth. Go there for chips instead.
R. D.
Nice clean pub ,dog friendly, food was nice
J. P.
Friendly service and a nice place to spend time, however there was a long wait for food, which was fairly underwhelming given the price. Good place to go for craft beer, and if value for money isn't a concern then I would recommend a visit, especially for the harbourside location.
J. R.
We had Sunday lunch it was lovely
J. J.
Nice marina bar/cafe. Beer was good, we just decided to have the dessert selection, but I'd recommend just get one big dessert as the selection just come in shot glasses and are really rather small!
V. B.
We had Sunday lunch as the Hall and Woodhouse - it was a wonderful experience. The staff were really friendly and the food was excellent - would highly recommend
S. C.
Lovely food, fantastic view over the marina. Looking forward to coming back soon.
t. w.
Nice dog friendly pub grate food i had the nut roast for change very tasty and the staff are very friendly
T. M.
Interesting place... Food was good and reasonably priced. Pleasant and efficient service. Would make frequent visits if I lived locally.
S. D.
The Hall and Woodhouse is situated by the Docks in Portishead and is fairly unique on the landscape as it is made out of concrete and shipping containers.... Im not going to lie, it is a brilliant building to look at if you like your industrial style buildings.
Inside it is well laid out, with a 'maritime traders' theme running through it as you might expect based on its location. It can feel a little cramped at times though as it does seem to be very popular on Fridays. The bar is well stocked offering something for everyone.
One criticism is that in the summer, it can get very hot indeed.. a building made out of Iron and concrete with large well glazed windows tends to act like a giant storage heater... and I don't think they installed air con.
Upstairs is the the main restaurant area serving a fairly typical gastropub menu , but with some flair to it. The food is delicious. The Beer battered fish and ships goes down particularly well with a little collander of peas! Very kitch! The dessert menu is small but well formed offering what is arguably some of the best ice cream in the UK produced by Salcombe Dairy.
Well worth going to for a really nice meal with family, work or friends.
J. w.
Lovely waiter, 1st floor very attentive. Food lovely and cocktails good.
L. T.
Lovely place to eat, nice staff, amazing restaurant to wall around, beautiful location but at peak times can get a bit crammed
D. B.
Fantastic place, really nice pub built in an interesting fashion. Nice outdoor seating area, food is nice and filling. Not massively expensive either.
J. G.
Enjoyable experience as always. Nice selection of wines and good food, although they do have a tendency to 'run out' of popular choices. Quirky atmosphere.
c. p.
Absolutely delicious
M. W.
Love the design of this place. Use of old shipping containers steelwork and lighting give a cool look. Nice mix of tables and chairs. Lots more tables upstairs.
A. C.
Popular watering hole next to the Marina. Good menu choices ( including Salcombe Dairy Ice Cream!). Polite and tidy staff. Clean loos!
A. S.
Food still below average. Burger poorly presented and fish and chips not great either. V noisy but quick service.
J. B. L.
Very good Coffee and Brunch selection, staff are A1 very attentive and awesome with Children. Nothing to fault here, if you are wandering around the Marina drop in and have lunch here.
E. A.
Really nice place, pleasant staff and a fairly short menu with adequate options for all. Fancy enough for a tasty but relaxed lunch.
J. H.
Busy and a bit noisy, but quick friendly service, food was good
S. V.
Great service and really nice food. Looked after well and really friendly. Recommended.
L. j. S.
Lovely venue and really lovely staff. Food was yummy, especially the cheesecake dessert!!
D. M.
Food was priced high but average in quality. Good choice of drinks but they are the most expensive in portishead. Lovely location and a unique building. Evenings and weekends are always busy.
S. F.
Fantastic whether you are going for a drink with friends or to have a meal. Lovely, welcoming atmosphere, great staff and service.
J. K.
Nice restaurant, with good food however some of the food should be better quality for the cost as the fish can be very greasy from the fryer it was cooked it
A. W.
Good food and coffee as ever
A. B.
Nice coffee, when asked what coffee do you do, they responded with "anything you like" and we got a lovely flat White and a cappucino with whatever milk/alt we liked :)
B. W.
Great place with a brilliant atmosphere especially for New Year's Eve, people of all ages just out for a good time. Will definitely be returning some time soon!
S. J.
This pub has benefitted recently from a refurb and has much improved eating area. Plenty of easy parking. Outside eating areas available when weather permits .
K. S.
Good food pleasant atmosphere.
L. H.

A. I.
Great atmosphere, magnificent design and top customer service..
Great spot for groups to dine and drink from the wide range of options available here..
W. P.
Midweek Lunchtime visit, very quiet. Lacked atmosphere. Food OK but a little bit expensive
G. H.
Beer is very good, food for the price, not for me. Management and staff not so good. I have walked out more times than I have been served. Wake up.
L.
Hade the steak and ale pie was one off the best I’ve ever had nice chunky bits of beef and very tender
B.
5 stars for the friendly service, food not the best though which is a shame.
C. s.
Just the best amazing staff amazing doormen just such a friendly place
K. P.
Just had a drink in here, but the food coming out did look good, sat outside in the sun great view of the harbour, very laid back vibe.
G. S.
Good food most of the time, however food didn't come as described on menu. They were good about this and took it off the bill as expected, not awkward at all
M. H.
Lovely food and friendly and helpful staff.
B. P.
It was a busy night and they were very understaffed. The sole waitress did her best looking after everyone but there were long waits for service.
P. S.
Excellent meal out with family including toddlers and fussy 11 yo. Attentive service, wide menu choice and sensible size portions. Would recommend.
T. D.
Food is good, but it's expensive after a menu revamp a couple of years ago.
Please hit like, if this is review has been useful :)
O. M.
Great little place full of atmosphere. Top quality service and friendly staff
K. H.
Good coffee and cake. Cover over most of the outdoor seating, which is great.
S. S.
Very high quality food for the prices and excellent service from the kind staff. On the evening I attended there was even live music to enjoy!
I. T.
Went for drinks only. Plenty of distancing and good covid style service. Pleasant informal atmosphere.
J. B.
Drinks are expensive, food is nice though and the staff are friendly. Dogs are allowed too which makes it a nice stop if you're on a nice walk around the marina with your pet.
L. M.
Great place for a drink. Sat in the bar upstairs looking out over the marina at lunch time. Busy but relaxed.
R. M.
Really friendly bar staff, good tea !!

L. E.
I've been to a lot of Hall and Woodhouse pubs but this is my favourite. Made from shipping containers, this badger pub is very quirky and definitely worth a visit
S. S.
Good atmosphere, friendly staff, and great views, the only minor down point is the price of some drinks but that is a very minor point.
D. I.
Good staff and good beer but the food was average.
A. R.
Always really friendly staff and great space. Loads of different kinds of people come here which I love because it makes the atmosphere so warm
D. H.

N. M.
Food fair.. Service was poor.. Especially at the bar.. Felt ignored.. Have been back and same again.. Not so bad that I wouldn't give it another go
C.
Great food and service. Very well set up under current covid restrictions.
R. R.
Great local pub with a nice selection of beverages and bar snacks. A nice environment for groups, or for quiet sections for couples!
R. G. G.
Interesting place (modified containers), nice food and good service. Bit cold at times and not sure on having dogs barking inside
S. G.
Good consistent food, excellent surroundings, can be a little pricey but definitely with it.
J. L.
Great building, interior and location, but was disappointed by price and quality of food on a recent visit. Scrambled egg on toast was about as low tech as possible.
S. H.
One of the nicest pubs in Portishead probably the best location right on the marina a lil pricey compared to the Posset Cup ( 5 minute walk away) but the best place for a summer evening
T. j.
Meal was excellent although didn't pay as part wasn't cooked and other part was cold. Great service though
