Reviews of Nova Scotia
B. B.
Nautical meets booze in one of the best proper pubs in the west. Why did I go to Clifton to get completely frozen then? Was also tempted by the ambiance of the mardyke but said “No”. I will come direct here next time
M. P.
This is a great local pub with traditions. It feels like a warm blanket after a bad week. People are wonderful, and you can have a friendly chat with anyone in the pub. They have a good choice of beer and cider and some tasty food.
G. H.
The pub overlooks the harbour at Bristol. I walked with some freinds from the town centre past SS Great Britain then popped in here for a beer. 10 people sat outside in the sun. Good choice of beer, cider and
Food. I didn't eat here but several people were eating and the food looked good. Freindly bar staff and the beer was a sensible price unlike the town centre.
M. H.
Had a lovely roast dinner, tender beef, loads of perfectly cooked cabbage and cauliflower along with the roast potatoes. I would have preferred the gravy to have been in a jug so the pair of Yorkshire puds would have stayed crispy. I will be returning.
r. a.
Very quaint place. Lots of outdoor seating overlooking the water.
M. T.
Probably one of Bristol’s best pubs. Really cosy, good beer and food, and a sense of history. Wish I could go more often. In fact, I probably will.
G. M.
Decent old fashioned no nonsense pub nice helpful bar maid when choosing a pint, and a good pint it was love this type of pub
S. H.
A friendly, proper English pub with a solid dinner menu and no dining room. I'm told this is traditional. 😅
D. F.
Great local pub. Good food at great prices.
A. B.
Great food and realistic prices, and amazing beers. Great friendly staff
G. S.
Authentic original pub with great food located on the harbour. Happy days
P. C.
Old decor nice staff good beer. A proper pub. A revamp of the gent's would not go amiss and grab that extra star.
D. E.
A real classic traditional pub, fantastic atmosphere, dogs welcome. Large outside seating area. Great food.
M. W.
Great pub, frozen in time, I’ve been coming here on and off for 50 years, not much has changed (except the food, looked good) may it never change!!
J. B.
Popped down for lunch with me mum and had a really nice time! Proper village pub feel right on Bristol harbour. We both really enjoyed our food, the crab salad special was particularly good. VERY reasonably priced and a really good selection of drinks
I. J.
Awesome local.
But I didn't tell you that, else it will be known as one of Bristols best dockside pubs.
Hang on, what do you mean it already is?..
M. N.
This is one of my favourite pubs in Bristol. Good choice of beers and ciders and always friendly staff and customers. Outdoors by the harbour-side in the summer is sublime, but it's great indoors too. Will be very upset if the mayor gets his way to reshape this part of Bristol into a costly housing project: it's fine as it is!
F. C.
It's a great shame this historic pub has been so badly maintained. I've visited it on and off since c.1975 when in Bristol and have always found it a bit scruffy, but clean and with a great atmosphere. On my latest visit, when Covid precautions should have prompted even better hygiene, the table was so sticky with dirt that the beer mats wouldn't slide on it. That said the food we ordered was up to the usual good standard but for the first time I was a bit concerned whether the general hygiene in the kitchen had also deteriorated.
C. G.
Friendly proper locals pub with a cute old fashioned snug. Dog friendly and lots of outdoor seating by the dockside.
D. R.
Quaint early 19th century pub with great food and good choice of Ales, friendly and helpful Landlord
The SS.GREAT WESTERN nearby and partial view of the Isambard kingdom Brunel Suspension bridge.
D. D.
We have visited this pub several times and have not been disappointed once! The food is excellent and great value for money and the staff are very friendly. It gets very busy and is fairly small and there can be a bit of a wait for food but it is well worth the wait, the door step sandwiches are large and the steak is extremely good. I would definitely recommend it to anyone after good pub grub at reasonable prices.
P. M.
Fine traditional pub very near the end of the harbour. Great beers and good standard pub food.
B. D.
Great pub. Good outside and inside space. Historic / picturesque setting with easy access. Good food and prices. Nice staff. Update: remains top quality. Staff member not as interested today! Maybe been unwell? But still one of THE best pubs in Bristol / anywhere.
A. A.
Great value and good food. Loved the Somerset Reggae real ale.
L. H.
Great old fashioned pub serving good beer
j. c.
As usual the Nova Scotia was really excellent, great Sunday lunch and wonderful polite service.
S. N.
The Nova, easy to reach by the Ferry from the City Centre. A pub that hasn't changed much in 20 years and all the better for it. The decor is old world pub. The clientele mainly local and folk who happen in. The beer and cider range is fair and the food good value and farmers portions. Lovely view of the autumnal dock side trees.
M. S.
Great place for a lovely beer or 2. Very friendly staff and locals.
C. I.
After two places being shut on a Monday evening the Nova Scotia turned out to be in the right place at the right time for four very hungry people. I had been here years ago, had remembered it was characterful and friendly, and sitting out and watching the river was a pretty nice way to spend the evening. The burgers here were, well, immense, both in taste and size, and as you can all the trimmings by were epic 😃
C. W.
Old fashioned pub with outside space looking over the docks area. Good reasonably priced food and real ale. Nice friendly serving staff. Public areas a bit tired but with character of a authentic and non modernised dockside pub. It is busy for the good reasons it has an excellent location, good food and real ales.
S. N.
We visited while on a walk around the harbour, upon entering we were greeted by a warm cozy atmosphere and a great smell of the home cooked food served here! The menu choise had a few items sold out which I expected going down later in the day, we had the steak and hunters chicken which was very tasty even down to the salad and at a great price if you ask me. 100% going to visit again!!
J. M.
Staff are amazing. Great food at good prices and large portions
D. C.
The last bastion of hope in a somewhat pub co driven swamp of hostelries.
Just a shame the Hambrook was off.
B. P.
Nice riverside spot and reasonably priced pints
R. L.
A true British pub. Lovely outside when the sun shines!
S. H.
Just been in for my first pint after lockdown. Was surprisingly open at 11am. Food served from 12. I had Whitebait and my friend had Cod and chips. Both really good with nice size portions and reasonably priced. We had a few lagers that were served by 2 fantastic girls who were very busy but made time to chat. The sun was out so pretty much perfect.
D. E.
Great beer but unfortunately food not. Fish was tasteless and grey instead of white. Been in the freezer for several months?? Also salad not fresh. Good pub and location however.
P. W.
If you are looking for a traditional boozer complete with a proper pub menu, reasonable beer selection and staff who take no prisoners then you will love the Nova.
Want craft beers, and food served with a 'jus' then I suggest you avoid.
O. V.
Nice drinks and food .outdoor seating next to river
E. S.
Friendly good beers and decent food. We pop in for a swift one and as charter after work. Good chatty clientele as well so ... Proper pub
P. W.

J. A.

Staff are friendly... Dog friendly... Drinks aren't over priced, has a decent seating area outside... Bathrooms are very clean and decent, do very very good sandwiches and cheesy chips that my mum and me order when we visit, very good range of food and snacks also.

P. A.
Friendly service, lovely reasonable priced pub grub and good portions! What more could you want!
T. D.
Olde traditional pub next to the water with great outdoor seating area. Friendly staff. Meals reasonable at a not dear price. Worth a visit if your walking a circular route around the harbour.
S. H.
Great food, brilliant job considering all cooked from such a tiny kitchen, well done guys 👏👏👏
a. j.
Historic pub, easy access by ferry. Reasonable cost of food and drink....very very busy...and full of rugby fans. Great atmosphere.
J. R.
I am working away from home, and was fancying a sunday lunch. I heard about this place 300 yards from where I was working so decided to have a wander down and check it out. The pub is a little treasure sat on the harbourside. A real pub traditional in all aspects. A good range of ales and ciders though I did not choose to partake. The sunday lunch was a choice of Lamb Chicken or Beef. I chose lamb. It came out on and it was a very generous portion of meat and all the trimmings. The vegetables were cooked perfectly to my liking, and were clearly very fresh. I shall be returning for food there again. Friendly staff and locals.
M. J.

N. T.
Atmospheric pub on the harbourside - good beer when available. Food - great value for money you won't leave hungry- but not fine dining - old fashioned and hearty

I visited this pub again with friends for Sunday lunch on the weekend of the Bristol Harbour festival and yes it was busy but being at the furthest point away was less popular
The prices for Sunday lunch are reasonable at £8.50 - choice of lamb, beef or chicken and vegetables (4), roasters, Yorkshire puddings and plenty of gravy - nut roast option available too, as well as a couple of limited choices - great not to be swamped with too many choices!!
Food was served well and was very hot, and greatly presented
Order and pay at the bar, limited seating inside but plenty of seating outside on a nice day
Would well recommend and would use again and I have used this on a couple of occasions and I have yet to be disappointed and it is good value for money, great staff and seating outside of the docks
J. B.

An unpretentious local pub, friendly staff, good food. But it's disappointing to find that, with so many great local breweries to guest, it instead serves Courage and Caledonian!
