Reviews of The Bird in Hand
M. H.
Nice village pub with unexpected South African connection. Tried the Durban chicken 'bunny chow' curry - really lovely and different to usual pub food. Though burgers looked lovely as well! A few good ales as well. Staff very friendly. Recommended.
M. S.
Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere sat outside in the beer garden. The staff were friendly, attentive (but not too attentive) and the menu was varied and interesting - with the added South African twist. I had the tier burger and it was well worth the price.

Best pub food I've ever had, and that's not an understatement. I've been coming for several months now and tried most things on the menu and they're all top notch. I can not fault this cosy pub in LA!
The owners are fab, kitchen staff are awesome, there's a cute little log burner at one end to keep you warm in the winter and a little beer garden for the summer. Highly recommend!
There aren't a huge number of tables so do book in advance if you don't want to risk not getting a table.
J. K.
Really different for a local pub. They offer all the pub classics which are really well done but it has a Suoth African section too. The lamb dish I had was cooked to perfection, so tasty and tender. My husband had the curry which he really enjoyed and you can choose the heat level. Staff were friendly and efficient.

We recently moved to Long ashton and wanted to try something local to us, we walked in in the bird in Hand and were acknowledged and welcomed straight away. Service was friendly and professional. My partner had the chicken burger which was really tasty! I was really pleased as they had my favorite gin which is not available everywhere. Overall a great experience and we will be back again!
C. C.
Great pub with classic grub and some delicious South African dishes. The Bobotie croquettes were cracking and the Lamb Bunny Chow curry was delicious. We had fun playing eye-spy with all the South African decor. Very warm and friendly service too.
S. S.
Love the food and vibe this slightly trendy country pub has to offer. And the service was brilliant. So glad we came across it and would go back in a heartbeat if I was in the area. Great country pub, great dinner. Thanks to the team and chef for making it such a fun and delicious!
G. E.
Really great pub. Fantastic food, wonderful service and overall a lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend and will definitely be returning there
N. C.
The South African flavour is very welcome. The food was excellent and the owner sorted out the football for us so a great evening was had by all.
L. T.
Food excellent and good value. Well presented. Staff friendly and would definitely go there again
J. M.
Serves Guinness again. Small but good selection of craft beers and lager. Food is not your standard pub grub, good quality, but always check the monthly menu to see if their is something you like. Great scoth eggs
C. R.
Lovely home from home food, lovely staff prices very reasonable. Be visiting again. Would love to see more S.A good on the menu.
D. J.
Great roast at the Bird in Hand today. Very good nut roast for vege/vegans. Good, attentive service too - especially as we were a big group.
H. G.
Friendly pub with great choice of beers. Good atmos and good food. Sit in or sit out, you choose. What's not to like?
S. L.
Really good menu at affordable prices. We loved the South African choices.
E. S.
Food and staff were great, atmosphere lovely. Parking is difficult to find, disabled parking could find none.
E. H.
I passed through Long Ashton on a walk and stopped here for some lunch. Cheese ploughman's, at £9, was on the expensive side. Nice bread and cheese, but maybe a bit stingy in quantity. Pint of Butcombe Original, at £4.05, also rather expensive. Quite pleasant sitting outside.

A lovely time this Sunday in family and with Friends! Great food and very ideal for family also!
E. W.
Beautiful cosy pub , great relaxed atmosphere . Fantastic food ! 😋
V. P.
Great food and super friendly/attentive staff. What more could you want?!

J. L.
Good selection of drinks. Great atmosphere and wood fire.

S. D.
Lovely little pub with amazing atmosphere
T. B.
Welcoming atmosphere, good drinks, nice food
G. E.
Great place and really lovely staff

Now with South African owners which offer a mix of African food with good roasts.
They have a small but comfortable outdoor beer garden and a nice range of drinks.
I'll be back soon!
P. W.
New landlord, new chef, better pub.
The Bird was good before, if a little confused as to its purpose before. Now with a change the good has stayed, and the rest improved.
Menu is much better, wine improved, and service is great.
A. G.
Absolutely delicious lamb curry bunny chow and loving the outdoor space it's such a treat to have something so warm and welcoming on our door step. Love it thank you will be back.
T. A. J. S.
Excellent food. Michelin Guide entry but not starred.
Expect to pay ~£50pp (for three courses and half a bottle of good wine)
Very small number of seats but not very busy- amazingly able to get seat a short notice.
Seemed to me that the first item on each menu was the most likely one with the most love put into it.
J. J.
Good food and service. Tad expensive for posh pub grub but interesting menu with a vegetarian and a vegan main course option. (Note Singular) wasn't drinking, and neither were my friends, so didn't clock the alcohol options. Overall above average. 3 and a half stars really rather than 3.
D. B.
Typical country pub but a decent one at that. If you like your gin, this is the place to be. Bar staff are very knowledgeable as well. Food there is well cooked and prepared. Beer garden is nice and scenery is pleasant. Decor is old fashioned pub style which I like.
S. D.
We are very lucky to have the bird as our local. Great staff, ambience and a wide selection of gin and the fabulous food. The fish and chips is the best you could get anywhere, cooked perfectly with triple Cooked chips and home made tartar sauce. Great that they now offer that as a takeaway too.
E. 7.
Lovely pub. Great beer, the best wine ever according to my wife, great staff and fantastic food. Inside is well appointed and there is a fantastic courtyard to catch some sun. I cannot think of a single negative.
J. A.
We had a nice lunch with the scotch egg to start and the beef rib being particularly good. We were most impressed by the chocolate fudge pieces on the bar being sold for 30p a pop. Best fudge we have ever had. Waitress / bar maid was working her socks off but still was gracious / calm despite there being a million people (roughly!) in the area for the Tour of Britain cycle race. Overall a great experience.
S. C.
Wow! They did a First class home cooked Turkey dinner for 30 of us there last night. Far better than the usual Xmas hotel grub . Meat moist and tasty, veg all perfect, gravy rich and flavoursome.
Well done Bird in Hand.
T. B.
Welcoming atmosphere, good drinks, nice food
O. B.
Stopped in here with the dog for a late afternoon lunch. We sat in the bar by the fire. The food was really well presented, generous portions and tasty. Staff were attentive without being fussy. We’ll definitely be back
G. N.
Brilliant Sunday roast every bit of it was amazingly delicious and the service was friendly relaxed and excellent too. Don’t normally write reviews so that’s how good this was. Been here before but think this was the best ever so thanks to yesterday’s chef and crew.
F. B.
An absolute pleasure to have had Sunday roast here. The staff are all lovely and the food was amazing. Felt really looked after. 5 star experience.... Sticky toffee pud ❤️👌
D. D.
My new favourite local. Fantastic food and an excellent selection of gins. Friendly staff and a great atmosphere. The menu is small but always has something great and a little different to offer. Don't go if you are a Weatherspoons type, this place has quality.
S. M.
Like it a lot here, good food, good atmosphere, good cider, heated outdoor seating area with telly... Banging.
J. G.
Amazing food as always and great service.
M. J.
Attended a friends 40th birthday, the pub was hired out privately so I don't really know what it's like on a regular day. That said, had a great time, got a little blurry towards the end but that's probably down to their fantastic gin collection. Definitely recommend!
K.
Great pub and good food. On the higher end of what you get locally and a well thought out menu. Staff are friendly and good spacing between most tables.
B. M.
Amazing. The staff are lovely, the place is cosy and atmospheric and the food is really top quality. Very much worth a visit if you're after a high end, seasonal meal.
A. D.
Great pub. Friendly staff. Tasty reasonably priced pub food.
T. N.
Great little pub. The Sunday roast initially seemed pricey but we came away thinking it was worth it, as it was super tasty and the staff were great. Definitely recommended
P. W.
Good food and a warm welcome. Got sky for rugby and not far from the busstops
L. L.
Awesome little boozer with great wine selection and gin of the week (with decent tonic!) - plus beers. Food lined good but we didn't eat (other than the commentary roasties and crackling at the bar!)
T. B.
The poshest of the very different pubs in long Ashton. Nice and cosy. Amazing gin menu. Think more London wine bar than traditional boozer.
D. Y.
Nice food but found it more a restaurant then a pub. Not a lot of seating if you're not eating. Very nice friendly staff.
A. H.
Great Sunday roast. The vegetable selection was amazing, purple and yellow carrots with boiled beetroot and cabbage. There was so much food I couldn't finish the plate!!!
P. S.
Good food and a friendly welcome in the courtyard. Well set up for outdoor eating.
m. j.
Great place, friendly, always aiming to please. Kids and dogs welcome. Hat's off to liz and Rob for saving our local pub.
L. C.
Amazing pub, good selection of alcohol, amazing food and great service/ friendly staff.
R. W.
Great food and service as we have always had, I would recommend to all if you love great food and friendly service, thanks again
I. O.
Great pub with great ales, usually full of locals. Good food if a little pricey. Booking required at weekends; it's always busy.
E. P.
Great food & service. Meals are freshly cooked on site from scratch to a very high standard. Had a lovely dinner there.
G. E.
Great place and really lovely staff
D. S. (.
Best pub, amazing staff, lovely friendly locals and amazing food
J. H.
Limited choices on an expensively priced menu...
Food was good as was the service. Will go again as the jury is out on an overall opinion of the place..
S.
Great little pub. Friendly staff. Fine ale and food. Also dog friendly. Booking advised for the Sunday roast.
A. S.
Absolutely fantastic food, drink and atmosphere. Really enjoyed the whole evening. Would definitely recommend.
H. W.
We stopped for a quick bite to eat on the way through Long Ashton. The menu was a little too extravagant for what we wanted, but what really put us off was the offhand attitude of the staff.
R. B.
Lovely pub atmosphere and great food.
G. R.
Visited here when we were in Long Ashton on a Saturday Night for a drink. Very packed out pub. But lovely staff, and good service. Will be going back.
G. P.
Friendly staff, great food and drink and everyone managed to have a great time despite the restrictions
M. A.
The food here is excellent and by far the best place to eat in the village also the beer is always well kept.
C. W.
Brilliant pop up burger bar and takeaway beer in lockdown. Good to support local
B. Z.
Expensive but worth it (in my opinion). Wouldn't frequent regularly but a nice change & was very impressed with the (new/different) food combinations and service.
J. M.
Classy pub. Imaginative food and wine menu at a reasonable price. Dining room was a bit chilly.
S.
Last min booking at 8pm on a Saturday night for 7, did all they could to accommodate us, brilliant service and the food was amazing, top place, wish I had found it earlier.
A. D. S.
Food, service and decor were good. Didn't blow me away like it had been billed by friends, but enjoyed my time there.
D. H.
Small, friendly pub with good food.
Will definitely visit again.
L. B.
Lovely cosy pub, god ale and wine selection. Wood burner, dog friendly and great food.
C. S.
Neat, bright pub with a glorious wood burner for cold nights. Incredible range of gins too...
L. !.
The food is outstanding...but maybe a little overpriced for a lunch menu. I recommend it though if your looking for something a bit special.
D. J.
Amazing fresh tasty food very friendly professional staff we will definitely be back
A. G.
Pleasant pub with good beer. Could do with the patio being cleaned up but they were packed at the time.
H. B.
Great food and drink, cosy atmosphere and friendly knowledgeable staff
W. R.
Great food with friendly service - always feel at home and never leave hungry or disappointed.
J. N.
Great food in the restaurant but an incredibly awkward doorway, cramped bar and poor selection of seating. Stick to the restaurant, and book a table, would be my advice.
J. M.
Good service.
But the pork Sunday Roast was pulled pork. Extremely disappointed.
On reflection, should have sent it back!
D. D.
