Reviews of The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer
J.
Fancied a true craft Bristol ale after a Vegan breakfast with my daughter so she suggested one on the historic King Street watering holes and this was it.
A step back in time to this famous cobbled street go-to drinking destination area. Lovely historical building and location and a proper real old world smell inside...real oak, wood, candles and burnt wood certainly adds to this pub's atmosphere and historical charm.
The staff were ever so friendly, welcoming and attentive. The vast selection of real true cask ales and ciders is very impressive, wow!
I had a pint of the 'UP ABOVE' session pale ale brewed by LHG /Left Handed Giant independent Brewery in Bristol and it was exceptionally good and stunning!
A big thank you to all the staff for making my swift ale pitstop so memorable and enjoyable! Highly recommend this great historical pub and the food is apparently good too...definitely next time!
M. F.
This place do marvellous burgers, as good as any of the gourmet burger restaurants I've been to! They also do loaded fries which are equally good. There's also a great selection of ale and an unintrusive TV showing sport if you're interested. The staff were also really helpful.
L. M.
Always have great selection of beer on tap and good choice of wine too. Great for a cold winters day especially when they are serving up their Sunday roasts (pork belly is thee best) but equally a nice spot in the summer, with seating on Kings street and great bar snacks too! Staff generally quite chatty and friendly.
D. E.
Great pub with an awesome selection of beers. We do the quiz every couple of weeks. It is fun and silly, don't expect a serious affair, if you take your quizzing seriously, don't bother. If you want to have fun, drink some drinks and laugh with the host then it's for you. Don't appreciate how old the music round makes me feel though.
M. G.
Decent beer but the "Bacon Double Cheese Burger" is a con! There's only one burger and it is named like this as there are two slices of American cheese. Its a "bacon 'double cheese' burger" and not a "bacon 'double cheeseburger". Don't get me wrong: it was tasty. However the name is misleading and in all honesty 12 quid for a burger without chips is steep.
A. W.
Not the kind of burgers you would expect from a pub. I had the volley burger with rosemary fries. The pickled onions and sauce were a perfect combination and the rosemary fries were especially moreish. I could have eaten a trough full.
The bar had an excellent range of beers qlso. Highly recommended!
R. L.
Great pub, great beer, terrible quiz. Do not do the quiz. Quiz master is unfunny, smug, overly sarcastic, seemingly doesn't enjoy quizzing. Avoid this quiz which, in fairness, is easy to do as they rope off a section of the pub for it. Creative rounds do not make a quiz. It is subjective, not objective. We just want a normal quiz, cleverly worded questions with simple, objective answers, no random guessing questions, no "Did Kanye say this?" rounds. Just a normal quiz. Anyway, great pub.
J. R.
Such a great pub quiz, really fun! We had a great time and Iggy is hilarious. Excellent selection of beers and nice burgers (two veggie).
R. L.
Excellent pub. And especially excellent pub quiz. Quiz master is really funny and very sound. Questions are a mixture of good ol fashioned general knowledge and more creative and esoteric stuff. Well balanced and fun!
D. C.
Great selection of ales. Lovely open fire.
L. C.
One of the best selection of craft beers you can find in the city, lot of local ones too, and a constantly updated board. One of Kings Street's finest.
J. G. O.
A wonderful experience. The environment of the place and eating in front of a chimney is fantastic. The food was very good.
J. B.
Best selection of craft beer on the street. Great food. Lovely old fashioned looking pub
A. H.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Comedy Roast semi-final in early May '22. Great beers and staff run off their feet keeping us supplied at the breaks.
A. G. b. A. M.
Love love love this pub!! Not only do they have a plethora of beer and cider options, but they have great food, a jovial atmosphere, outdoor seating and tons of space indoors. Terrific space for watching live broadcast of sporting events as well. We were pub hopping, stopped in for a pint and stayed for 2+ hours. With many options in Bristol, be sure you take care to not overlook The Famous Royal Navy. It's a gem!
한.
Great beer. I really enjoyed various beer. Especially, I liked cider in cask. I've not drunk cider in cask before, It was unique.
If you don't know beer, just ask to staff. They're kind and friendly.
W. A.
Amazing food and good service for food. Would of been 5 star but when served food no cutlery or napkins given with the meal. Tried to get some but food was too busy to be served
A. K.
Great selection of beers and a Sunday roast to die for. The pork belly was amazing! Shame I don't live in Bristol or I would eat here every Sunday.
O. C.
A strong go-to place for a decent drink with mates, with a vast choice of beers, and with some vegan/GF/lactose friendly beers too. Solid choice for watching sport events with several decent big screens around the bar. Their rooftop bar is gorgeous in the summer, and almost a well kept secret.
M. D.
If it's a good quality beer you're into then this is a place you must visit! An insane amount of beer lines serving local and nationwide craft beer. Always a buzzing atmosphere with regular tap takeovers from local breweries.
E. C.
Five star pub quiz. Not like your average pub quiz, with previous rounds including 'serial killers' and 'guess the film based on the netflix description' Good laugh.
C. C.
Food was absolutely delicious, staff were fantastic and great customer service. We had dinner around lunchtime onbl a Sunday and there was a 45 minute - an hour wait. But, it was worth it.
The rugby was on too, but we were sat under a speaker, and it kind of meant that we struggled to hear each other in the corner we were in. Still lovely nonetheless.
C. R.
Really nice place and food. Typical english Sunday roast, Delicious. You have to order looking for the waitress.A bit expensive, but we would like to repeat again
J. C.
Food was an unexpected surprise considering how low priced the sharers were. Lovely old pub with great character.
M. Y.
Lovely seat by an open wood fire. The burgers were excellent and the loaded fries really good value.
b. b.
Nice bar. Great selection of rotating beers
S. Z.
Went for a short visit on Friday night,
A tipical tradional English pub, great atmosphere, live music, not overcrowded, good service
I. J.
Fantastic array of quality ales, if you're happy to pay a premium for the experience. Some of the beers are £9 a pint!
The gents toilets are inventive, using old beer barrels for the urinals.
A. C.
A lot of different what i thought was over priced beers, did'nt know what to drink so i tried a couple of different one's, they were allright.
P. D.
Nice pub with a decent selection of drinks in an atmospheric setting and with an outside area. Tends to be a bit quieter than other King St options, so a good option if you want to avoid stag/hen dos. Also shows the football. Downsides are its pretty expensive and a pretentious new food menu that doesn't match the pub fayre that most visitors probably want.
A. G.
Well that was a shock! I was expecting an olde worlde pub with the choice of two or three beers and a grumpy old guy behind the bar. So not true. 13 keg beers, 5 cask beers, smattering of ciders and the grumpy old guy was me! Worth a visit beer fans!
P. W. -. D.
this is so hard to write, because this is a pub I've loved for such a long time... One of the reasons I love Bristol so much, character, beer, friendly staff and great food.
but today's experience was so upsetting, having being one of the two tables booked in, they managed to forget about half our tables order which was just 'left in the lift' and the small to large plates were the same sized plate... Effectively just trying to charge more, one being a chicken dish with grilled ice gem lettuce and 3 £2 coin piece's of chicken sold as a large plate.
The toilet bowls were stained yellow with months build up of urine and the taps were falling apart.
I hope some improvements are in place as I was so looking forward to the roast dinner!
I'll be back, but please remember the people who have and still do love this pub!
W. C.
More of a cider drinker the beer, and it's definitely more for beer. Nice music and ambience, though 😁
L. W.
Inside the pub is lovely. 4 stars because the front of house waitress was a bit rude / slightly patronising.
r. s.
Great pub, great selection of beers
E. R.
All the best and craziest beers served in Bristol. This is my go to pub when I want to drink the best beers that the UK has to offer. Get yourself a flight of 3 beers.
A. N.
I've booked this venue my a birthday Sunday roast. We were almost 20 people, and the service went on flawless, good job! Thank you for your patience. Highly recommended
A. P.
So much choice of beer
d.
Great selection of a wide range of beers, ciders and ales, all of which I hadn't heard of! Lovely staff and great comedy night!
F. C.
The Royal Navy Volunteer is a great pub, which is very cosy in the winter, with its fire and wooden interior. Beer, however is pretty expensive and the roast isn't as good as others I've had. A recommended location, nonetheless
L. V.
Great food and beer. Service could be improved. Bar staff seemed to not know the menu and made quite a few mistakes.
N. R.
Visited just after covid restrictions lifted and felt perfectly at ease and very welcome!
Amazing selection of drinks and great service (shout out Iggy) - sorted us out with solid recommendations and super friendly.
Came back two days later to show some friends and was recognised with a smile so double shout out Iggy.
T. G.
Iggy is great! Took me through the IPAs, good tropical IPA 👍 cheers Iggy!!
M. B.
A bit pricey, very large selection of beers.
A. S.
Great beers, good atmosphere, awesome friendly staff (super happy and helpful!) Roof terrace is great in summer too! However the food has meant I've given the lower score - food was cold and not that tasty. Everything else was great - go there for drinks, vibe and great staff, not so much for the food.
s. s.
The beers available were pretty good but the main thing was the great service and live music.
N. H.
Great bar with lots of fine beers. Well worth a visit.
C. E.
Great atmosphere and wide selection of ales/ciders
O. M.
Great roast. Easy to get a table on a Sunday. Good beer.
l. r.
Great Beer Selection. Fantastic Rooftop Terrace
M. P.
Great pub with amazing choice of beers and great looking food. Very busy and one of besg locations to watch sport in a great atmosphere.
S. J.
Lovely Pub,located in a great part of Bristol great selection of beers and ciders and cloudy ciders, i highly recommend the Rubarb cloudy Cider, outdoor searing also plemty of seating inside.
R. D.
Great place for a ale - really good selection of great British ales. Serves good food too - limited choice but great if you like burgers. Venue is full of character and quite unique. Dirty fries were delicious as was the cod burger. Good place for relaxed drinks and food with friends. Shows live sports on TVs so most tables get a view.
C. D. P.
I've been twice here having Sunday roast and can say is one of the best Sunday roast I've been. Keep it the good work!
B. B.
Lovely staff, good portions, great selection of bevs. A little cold though
T. M.
Incredible selection of craft beers, ales, ciders etc. Usually plenty of space available. Good service too.
V. G.
Went there for the six nations game and while it was really full and loud it still remained very civilised and was a great experience. The beer is good and they have a very wide selection of them. The staff is knowledgeable and had a ton of patience with the variously drunk guests. They also allow dogs inside which I find very nice. Great pub with history!
S.
Still an okay bar. Given the name of the bar and being current navy myself, the bouncer ensured me that a discount was a thing for those serving... Instead the manager looked at me like I had three heads. I don't mind a place not offering discount but don't have your staff suggest it is a thing before I enter 🙄
G. F.
Great pub for lovers of craft ale and cider. Enormous variety on offer, although this can make it difficult to find something you like because there is often a number of unusual brews that can be a bit of an acquired taste! That being said, there are plentiful choices for more standard pale ales, stouts, bitters and the like. The majority of the ales and ciders on tap are available in all 4 sizes from whole pints down to 1/3s. A flight of three thirds is available with a 10% discount - which is a great way to test the more unusual offerings and find something you enjoy for a larger glass!
There is a small roof terrace which is lacking in views but makes for a more sheltered and relaxed environment than drinking out on the street. The terrace gets a good amount of sun in the summer.
The pub is spacious but very popular, giving it a good atmosphere. The beer menu on the wall is an interesting touch and mixes up the standard pub experience. It would be good if they brought back the numbering on the ale menu - it can be a little tricky when ordering for a group to remember all of the names of the ales as the menu is hard to see from the bar especially at busy times. Ordering by number was much easier and also added to the unique experience.
All in all, the volley is my favourite pub on King Street - which is full of stiff competition!
S. M.
What an incredible selection of beers. A must visit for any craft beer enthusiasts.
C. G.
My favourite pub on king street. Not the cheapest, but always a great atmosphere and generally attracts a better crowd. Bar staff are lovely and helpful. There is also a really pretty roof top terrace. The pub has TVs in all of the rooms and shows the big matches across a number of sports
r. f.
The best. Terrific service. Sat outside watching the world.
D. T.
Fantastic selection of 'proper' beers!
N. P.
Excellent house of ales. Keep it going.
D. B.
Great beer, exceptional selection. Some cohld be kept a bit better, but it's expected with a selection this big. Very popular so not great for an intimate evening, but still casual enough to have a friendly night out with a small group of friends.
Good regular spot for Kings Street and worth a visit!
H. H.
Lovely pub, perfect music volume, great choice, fireplace...just perfect
J. A.
Good selection of beers, can be a little confusing as they aren't easy to see from the bar and they seem to be swapping (running out) what's on tap. Twice, it's happened where the drink I was having was taken off, but it can get pretty busy. Great location, not as cheap as some other pubs along the strip, but feels like your paying for better stuff.
S. B.
If you want to try a wide range of beers, this would be a great place to start. I've been here a few times and there are always something like 15 or 20 draft beers, ciders and lagers on offer and they have always seem to have been well-cellared. In true craft beer style, you can order 1/3 pints (Or 1/2, 2/3 Or full pints) so you can work your way through a few. The staff are always happy for you to sample a few before ordering, if you want to be on the safe side.
S. T.
One of the best places for watching sport in kind street and great to try out some of their on tap beers of which they have a massive selection. I have never eaten there but the food that comes out looks like good quality pub grub. Good amount of space for standing around the bar area and quite a bit of seating.
The only reason I am giving them 3 rather than 4 is the price of the pints (which is pretty high ~£4-5) and that bar staff fancy themselves a little bit. However, would still really recommend!
R. C.
Inconsistent. Chicken wings were cold and chips were cold/chewy, on the other hand, cider was great and oxtail croquettes were delicious. New ordering system via the phone is more drawn out than others but the tables were well spaced and staff were friendly
G. P.
It depends s an ok pub in the center of Bristol.
No more, no less
J. C.
Went on a Friday evening so the place was very very busy understandably, however the prices to quality ratio was pretty off. Many of the drinks available weren't worth the taste and people notably were leaving nearly full glasses behind including my party. Atmosphere however upstairs was nice and the general cleanliness of the area was great.
D. T.
Great selection of beers and really good pub food!
S. V.
I have always liked this pub. I remember it back in the late 70s and early 80s when the old Dockers used to sing and play the spoons on a Sunday lunchtime. Still got the old feel to it. Really nice food and a great choice of ales. Will be going back when next in Bristol.
D. H.
Great atmosphere, in a cool setting, however the whole 'not having the name of our beers on the taps and instead, having a huge wall that isn't visible from the bar for you to choose your beer from' is a little hipster step too far. Call me old school, but I like to go to a bar, have a look at the tap art, and choose a beer based on the image in front of me, and a little taste... Could easily get 5 stars if the pints were brought down £1 and added the names of what you serve at the bar.
A. P.
Good customer service 👍
Great covered garden 👌
K.
Went for a private function, the room was nice however a little bit hot in the summer. Luckily there's a rooftop terrace to cool down. They have a wide variety of craft beers and ciders too.
R. E.
Quite a warm and welcoming pub. It has a wide range of craft beers on tap. Also does a quite a few different spirits and ciders.
It has outdoor seating and also a rooftop terrace for any smokers or if you want to enjoy some good weather. Also they have a mid level floor for private functions and overspill.
Downstairs the pub wraps around the bar. Plenty of seating. Only bad note is the bar area can get packed with not room to manoeuvre if it gets busy.
C. C.
Great atmosphere. Top notch music venue
W. P.
Wonderful pub with a range of beers, had the nice old pub feel that we like.
A. D.
Has a really wide selection of local Bristol beers. Lots of seating areas so there is a homely pub feel to the place despite it being quite big. Beers are medium priced for kings street. Serve food also, classic pub menu.
A. C.
Pretty much my favourite pub at the moment. Brilliant range of beers, choose from the boards and decide what size glass you want (maths coursework). Good atmosphere. Slight overemphasis on football tellys, but hypocritically, ideal when I wanted to watch rugby.
D. R.
A gem in a necklace of a street, the "Volly" has an astonishing range of beers on tap with a full wall of descriptions to help you find something to suit your taste. If the menu isn't good enough you can always ask the staff who know their product well, it strikes me. It's not a hairy arsed CAMRA beer place though, it's respectable enough for a date and the food is pretty decent too. Gets crowded but never so bad you can't bear to be there. A good pub.
L. B.
Great selection of beer, well presented in my opinion (but not very expressive which I know some dislike) and they're kind of happy to give you a few samples (but you can't get away with as much as Wetherpoons). The nice thing is that they're very relaxed about who they get in rather than being quite beer-fascist like the Small Bar who are a bit more assertive about choosing only certain breweries, styles or 'quality' which is both a boon and bad thing. Apparently the food here is excellent too but I couldn't tell you from experience.
D.
Great service, big portions definitely be back !!
K. S.
Hired a function room for our daughter’s christening. The communication with the event staff was amazing, always responding quickly to questions and available.
Unfortunately we over ordered on the food and ended up wasting a lot. A shame for both the wastage of food and money. Maybe if having an event the pub could show photos/size of food on the menu. Also the sandwiches were thick ciabatta chunks in varying sizes.
The set up was nice but with only 3 tables the guests ended up going to the rooftop to eat.
Overall a nice experience
S. J.
great staff, traditional pub!
S. P.
Outstanding keg ales of every variety, all in excellent condition. The staff know what they are serving too. Top venue
O. T.
A large pub with an extensive range of beers, eight of which are on cask. The selection of beers changes very regularly and there are often takeovers by breweries.
The food is good pub grub, from cheesy chips to fish and chips. Sunday lunches are especially good; their triple is a days worth of food in one go!
T. H.
A cozy pub with an amazing beer selection. I always seem to end up chatting to random people here, I suppose due to the relaxed nature of the place.
Great for both a quiet drink or a proper night out.
B. S.
Amazing beer selection, very knowledgeable staff, would 100% recommend and go again
P. F.
It's a pub with many different beers, great!!!
J. P.
Yet another fine drinking establishment on King Street.
Two of my friends' eyes lit up when the saw the beer selection as they're real beer enthusiasts. There were some really interesting flavours and beer types.
The pricing system as it was not at all clear which price related to which measure. Not a huge amount of seating or places to rest a drink on so we ended up standing around, but it was on a Friday
S. i.
Lovely choice of ales which cycles regularly. Some staff are lovely, some are a bit offish, which sadly I experienced tonight. Asking for a vegan friendly drink for a friend, I was provided with a pint of I don't know what and then charged. Helpful ish.
D. S.
Excellent selection of drinks
P. P.
Average and overpriced. Lots of choice but for me that is some of the issue. Beer knowledge was weak. I prefer smaller well kept and knowlegeable staff. Did not enjoy the food nor the atmosphere, cannot understand why it rates so highly. Would go back, wouldn't make it a first, second, or third choice though. Hunt around.
J. W.
Such a great choice in beer and cider. A must visit. Something for everyone.
S. W.
The Famous Royal Naval Volunteer gets 5 stars from me, no question about it. Make time to stop by if you're visiting Bristol and are into your craft ale / cider, you won't be disappointed.
You'll find a fantastic selection here which is sourced locally and regionally. It's fairly priced and you can purchase a third, two thirds, half or a pint with the idea being that you're able to try a few of the many styles on offer. If you're a CAMRA member don't forget to show your card as you'll get 10% off drinks - winner!
Sunday roast gets a big thumbs up and always goes down well with my family and friends. You can choose between various meats for the main and they offer sides to accompany it, their vegetarian option is amazing too.
Finally, the staff are great and welcoming - they know their beer and the table service is brilliant.
Thank you The Famous Royal Naval Volunteer - we will be back 👍
D. M.
I like a clean pub, but the smell of bleach was a little overpowering. Really good beer selection even if it's a little awkward to read the board of beers and see the board whilst looking over diners heads. Service was mostly with a smile. A decent drinking place overall though.
i.
Great traditional pub but with a modern take on (mostly) local ales and ciders - don't expect Fosters or Thatchers Gold. Food menu looks good too, I'll have to return and try some if it soon.
D. P.
Probably the best stocked bar in Bristol
P. H.
Good selection of beer / cider
D. W.
Awesome beer knowledge and handy little roof terrace. Nice and cool on a hot day up there
A. L.
Nice cider and beer selection
C. K.
Usually very friendly staff who will help anyone - whether you're really into your different lagers and ciders and want to try something new, or you have no idea and would like to be recommended something. Quite a lot of seating. Nice atmosphere with fire for the winter.
K. O.
We hired out the downstairs function room for my girlfriend's birthday and it couldn't have gone better. A fair price for a great space, top food, great selection of beers, and most of all amazing staff. Easily one of my favourite pubs in town.
H. J.
Plenty of beers on tap if that's your thing, helpful and knowledgeable bar staff too. It attracts an office crowd so be prepared to queue if you're heading there for 5 ish. Pretty cosy though and a nice place to chill out and socialise. The whole street is filled with similar style bars so it's a great location for an evening out
B. F.
This place is phenomenal. It has an astonishing array of ales; is extremely spacious; has a roof terrace as well as an outside seating area and is sufficiently off the beaten track to be a bit of an obscure gem (I only came on the basis of a friend's recommendation.) Well worth a visit if you're in the area!
M. B.
Great selection of beers - all small brewery and independents. You won't get a Stella in here. A small range of proper ciders as well. Only downside is it's rather pricey
E. H.
So the best thing about this pub is the staff, especially Max and Jack. Absolute babes. The pub quiz was awesome; the staff are even better (despite the Harry Potter glasses). Highly recommended!
E. s.
A truly varied ever changing selection of beers, definitely worth a visit for true beer lovers.
C. M.
Good place to chill out and have a drink. Friendly, hospitable staff, with nice selection of beers and ciders to have (plus lengthy wine list!). Food is pretty satisfactory as well.
C. M.
Hands down the best roast dinner I've had to date. I was greedy, sprung for a trio of meats. That pork belly... well... how do you do it guys. It's been two years since I had the pirkbelly and I remember like it was yesterday. Price wise, steep in my opinion. But then again it is a city so... star off for a personal reason of not having some a few real ciders alongside their vast beer/ale selection
G. S. (.
Amazing pub with huge selection of different beers.
P. S.
One of the pubs where we always take our foreign friends and visitors, as they have nice food, great selection of beers and ciders and nice staff. People and the place are welcoming and friendly.
D. P.
Almost too much choice! Craft beer heaven.
R. V.
A great place to eat in a lovely olde Worlde street. Friendly and chatty staff who served a very filling and big burger. Unusual way to order your beer but after the second pint you don't care.
P. G.
Beer is great, but changes a lot so never the same selection every visit. Food is really good. We had lots of bits off the bar menu, the only thing I wouldn't order again was the sausage roll, but only because every thing else was much better
C. P.
Beautiful old pub lost of pirate history 😁
C. B.
Good selection of drinks. Slightly on pricier side but that's the same with most craft beer pubs. Cider selection could be more varied.
C. L.
Great band playing when we arrived, the house rum is awesome stuff too
G. K.
Great little pub, popped in for a coffee and a light lunch. Nice staff and tasty food. 👍🏿
a. k.
Great beer selection and fairly nice staff.
d. h.
What a gem of a pub I found on my latest visit to Bristol. Fabulous selection of beers and a wonderful varied daily changing menu. Also a spectacular alternative use for beer kegs in the gents toilets.. Outstanding...
D. B.
One of the best pubs on king street for what it is. Always busy there, typical office bar stop off after work. Great choice of ciders and has 4 different drink size choices.
M.
Perfect roast dinner. Only issues are individual gripes - it's too dark inside for my liking and the flat white I ordered looked and tasted more like a lukewarm latte.
I can't recommend the roast dinner enough. I wanted to eat it again immediately after and would have if I wasn't stuffed beyond belief.
N. N.
Although not aiming at a romantic atmosphere, this pub succeed at creating it. Craft beer pub sourcing from Micro brewery. The bartender was knowledgeable with a keen eye, he suggested 2 drinks for us which turned out to be spot on
D. C.
The tremendous, ever-changing range of craft beers and ciders are the main attraction here. You're not visiting for the decor and I can't comment on the food, but the drinks are well-kept and the menu goes on and on, while the staff are extremely knowledgeable and happy to give you through the frankly bewildering range of options available.
M. J.
Tidy and historic venue, but I do blame this place for the price hikes on king Street Bristol, because they were the first place I remember to hike up the price of keg, when they added another £1/£1.20 extra for the same drinks the had on cask, and this was around 4 years ago after a refurb. Nice choice of drink, but soon the working man won't afford to go out.
D. C.
Decent selection of drinks and standard pub snacks. Nothing extraordinary but a good pub for a pint and a chat
T. S.
Really wide selection of tasty ales and craft beer. Relaxed atmosphere which is a rare treat for King Street. Slightly pricey on the pints.
R. D.
Huge selection of beers, largers and ciders. If you love judging people solely based on what they drink then this is the place for you. Good tip, don't ask for fosters, they may linch you.
R. W.
Well worth visiting for their range of top quality beers.
D. T.
Service good, food good, value good
M. H.
Fantastic selection of beer, very knowledgeable staff and great tasting food. Also plenty of space inside and a great beer terrace on top!
C. B.
Amazing selection of ales, real and keg including gone, sours regularly from independent brewers. Good cider selection as well. Cracking tidy pub. Good food.
J. H.
Plenty of seating, and an excellent selection of beers. Staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. Will happily visit again.
D.
Excellent great selection of ales ...
W. D.
Gets a little busy like all Kings Street pubs, so the service can be a little slow at times.
Fantastic selection of beers though and cost atmosphere. A touch on the expensive side.
D. C.
Superb selection of real ales and ciders on offer, some cask, many Keg and friendly knowledgeable staff ready to serve, a Wednesday evening and yet lively, busy atmosphere, comfy eclectic seating options, a big favourite for locals and visitors alike.
C. B.
One of my fave pubs in Bristol, was esp good for watching rest of six nations. Plenty of tables and felt most like normal life since start of covid
M. B.
Great selection of ales.
A. S.
Awesome staff and food. Great range of on tap options for a drink. If I ever get back to Bristol I will definitely go back.
M. R.
Brilliant lunches and astonishing range of beers and ciders. Plenty of seating areas for diners and drinkers. Also has a bar area with several TVs if you want to catch a sporting event.
R. C.
Had a really excellent Christmas meal here, the food was fantastic. Of course there's always a great and interesting selection of beers available on tap.
N.
Hired the function room for a stag do and wasn't disappointed. Great food and drinks with our own private bar. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Many thanks for a great night out.
r. l.
Historic and cool with great range of beers.... Only had high strength beer so if you like volume then perhaps may not be the place
K. L.
Lovely venue indoors, plenty of space with the outdoor seating. Friendly staff.
R. “. G.
Great beer and snack selection. Really like the different seating areas available. Staff always great
A. F. G.
A lovely, central, pub with fast service even when busy. Huge selection of local beers and some small-batch ciders. It could do with a few more of the latter... This is Somerset.
L. C.
Large choice of cask n keg beers. Clean tidy and presentable but still retaining enough character to not be pretentious. Good speedy service even at busy times.
A. P.
What a great pub. If you are a person who appreciates ale, larger or cider as if you are at a beer festival then this is the place for you. Dozens of choices.
O. P.
Great selection of ever changing local and national craft beers, although can be quite pricey. The open fireplace is a good spot on cold day.
A. P.
Great choice of ales ..all different types however, I had a Thornbridge Lord Marples, it was not great, to warm and I suspect old however in a place this busy I cannot imagine it to have chance to get old
Next I tried Ghost Heretic, lacking flavor and to warm again.
Not sure how far the cellar is from the pipes but not impressed with either.
Then I watched the staff use the handpump how many pulls should a pint take...two and a bit in my experience..not six
Now I remember why I do not come in here when I'm in Bristol.
P. L.
Great little pub famed for it's ever changing ale, beer and cider selection. Endless choice of various flavours - never thought I'd enjoy an 8% chocolate milk stout!
S. L.
A cosy, traditional and very historic pub, with an amazing selection of beers, ciders and spirits - the staff are really pleasant and knowledgeable too. I can also recommend their roast dinners, very tasty!
K. W.
Lovely staff calm atmosphere good selection of ales largers and beers
J. P.
Fancy a Sunday roast in central Bristol? This is a solid choice. Big pub across multiple levels, and the food is spot on.
D. S.
Best Sunday roast I have had for a long time
J. W.
Incredible selection of craft beers and a beautiful roof terrace! Stopped by for the pub quiz which was pretty great considering our first visit!
F. F.
Great selection of craft ales and beers with friendly staff. Can get very busy so need to plan ahead when you are closing in on a refill.
C. S.
A lovely cosy pub that does loads of different real ales and lagers. It is always my pub of choice when heading in to Bristol and would highly recommend a visit!
R. C.
Good selection of decent beers nice atmosphere felt really comfortable in there will definitely visit again next time we are in Bristol
M. A.
The Volunteer has gone 'craft beer' but not, in my view, convincingly. Looks like it's worked out well for them; pretty crowded, but I prefer the old Volunteer with tatty sofas and such. If you want authentic craft beer go to the Small Bar just across the road.
J. C.
We enjoyed a fun Tuesday quiz night run by quizmaster Jasper. The range of ales and ciders available to choose from is also very impressive!
D. S.
Great beer, really busy pub good atmosphere. Beer/drinks menu on the wall is a little confused. Worth a visit.
T. G.
Definitely worth visiting for the draught beer options alone. A whole board filled with various breweries. Fairly cosy inside, with high quality finishings. Definitely good to get there earlier as it can get fairly busy later in the evening.
B. H.
A perfect example of this place is a colleague left me a beer as he rushed for the last bus .... anyway Emily smelt the beer that he left and targeted the smell and pinpointed the beer. Thank you emily. Great beer great service. Happy times happy people
A. B.
Good pub, nice staff, excellent beer selection. Could do with a couple more ciders but the ones available are nice.
B. G.
Massive range of beers to try for anyone who loves trying out new flavours. Friendly staff and cosy interior in a good central location.
A. P.
Wide selection of less known beers and ciders and a decent atmosphere. I had a venison burger which was very tasty. And they allow dogs.
P. E.
Historic old pub with refurbishment. Large ales selection. Good value food. A fun pub quiz on Tuesday night is a laugh with good prizes.
C. B.
Great pub, excellent beer selection that is constantly being updated, never seen the same thing twice. Lovely rooftop garden too. Quite expensive
H. S.
Love this pub, come here all the time. Great selection of beers and cider and the food is always lovely. Dogs are welcome too.
S. Z.
Great beer selection with rotating specials, roof top terrace us great in good weather
H. J.
If your looking for British made booze this is the place for you great cider and fruity lager too. The food was a little under size for me but tasted great
t. b.
Really tasty Roast, one of the best in Bristol for a reasonable price. Huge beer selection, good location, friendly staff.
S. L.
An ever changing rotation of great beers from near and far, knowledgeable staff and plenty of seating, combined with a fairly secret roof terrace makes this a great venue for locals and visitors to Bristol alike.
a.
Love the Volly. It's a staple on any slightly more civilised night out. The bar tender let me try a new spirit (it was gross! ) and helped me pick something really delicious.
E. M.
Great for, give a seminar, they are totally supportive with you all the time
P. M.
Sam Smith's pub off queen's square. The usual Sam Smith variety of Taddy's lager etc. Nice spot and the standard Sam Smith's prices. Old fashioned pub decor throughout.
J. H.
Amazing ale and cider selections, good food, rugby always on the TV (unless there's a royal wedding...), a roof terrace and a really nice atmosphere.
T. S.
Awesome pub in the heart of king street that's got a great selection of beers. There's live music, pub quizzes, a roof terrace that's ace in the summer and a log fire for the colder months.
D. D.
Good selection of beers. More than just a bunch of hoppy nonsense,an actual range. Missing a mild sadly. Plenty of room for sitting.
S. E.
Nice atmosphere. Great range of ales and lagers.
C. L.
Fantastic pub with a very wide selection of interesting craft ales. Lovely roof terrace to sit out in nice weather.
M. C.
Top place. Great choice of ales & other drinks. Friendly staff & pretty quick to serve, during busy times.
K.
They do gluten-free beer, which is fantastic news for my coeliac friends. I've not had food there, so not sure what to expect.
E. C.
Good range of beer but some were SO expensive!
N. H.
Famous old pub with an extensive range of artisan beers and surprisingly decent food. Decor could do with some freshening up but old is inevitably...old.
L. D.
I love that we get a description of the drinks we order, and we can make an informed choice, instead of picking a random one and only then realising it tastes like piss.
A. N.
Good selection of beers. Would recommend they add more ciders to their collection given in the cider capital of the UK
G. J.
Great pub with a log fire and a big selection of beers. No schooner or 2/3 pint nonsense.
S. S.
Friendly helpful staff. Lots of different beers to choose from. Lovely terrace. Nice place for after work drink

Great choice of beers and friendly service, the food was good priced pub grub too!
J. Y.
Wonderful bar that specialises in great British craft beers and ales, the staff are really friendly and know what they are talking about. They also serve great food!
J. P.
A little expensive compared to other outlets on King St but quite a selection of beers. Also, they make their jaegerbombs using monster which I thought seemed a bit unusual.
M. W.
Great range of beers, definitely craft beer style pricing though. The food is excellent, especially the Sunday roast.
K. K.
Nice place at the pubs street of Bristol
T. P.
Lovely atmosphere. Tasty food
D. K.
Nice pub, fantastic selection of drinks. Nice and big with plenty of seating. TVs showing sports in the back.
K. E.
Good beer but long queues to get served at bar. Delicious home made sausage rolls
C. H.
Great selection of beers, more expensive than your usual but has such a broad selection of ale it's more than worth it.
A.
It's a great pub with a lot of craft bear. It's big enough so you should not have a problem to find a sit.
R. D.
Vast selection of beers at relatively decent prices. Quite a spacious place with a lively atmosphere 👍
M. M.
Best selection of beer / cider on King Street for me, decent toilets and the bar staff really know their beverages well
B. H.
Great drink selection, glad to see that it's back open.
D. N.
A paradise for beer and cider drinkers. Vegetarian is OK but I think veggies aren't given much consideration when they're menu planning.
D. T.
I was unsure about this place because it doesn't look amazing. However, 8 was surprised about the quality of the food! It was surprisingly good and the staff, particularly Sebastian and Helen, were amazing!

G. K.
Good spacious pub, with live sport and a vast range of local/craft beers on tap.
J. E.
Great pub but super busy on a sat and small (but we'll stocked) bar
J. M.
Used to be a traditional pub in the centre, while the décor inside and out has remained the same, has turned into a craft beer pub, so has lost some of the traditional feel.
M. N.
Excellent selection of beer. The Sunday roast is pretty good for a pub. Would visit again
C. M.
Great Sunday lunch, meat and veggie. Friendly staff and roof terrace which unfortunatley resembled an overturned ash tray. Shame as every thing else great.
M. A.
Fantastic selection of ales, great atmosphere & friendly staff. Wi-Fi is a bit poor confined to the back of the Pub.
J. J.
Really nice pub with really good beers, but so so expensive. I guess that's what beer is these days. Around £5 pints average.
