Reviews of The Lion
K. A.
My friend recommended The Lion as she said its the best roast she's ever had and she was right. The food is utterly delightful, every single bit of food on the plate is made with love. Service is just lovely, the gentle who served us the first time we went was so helpful and accommodating. The pub itself is so quaint and cosy. It really has a wonderful homely feel. Can't recommend this place enough.
d.
Excellent and attentive service, we were even moved to the garden without asking, as soon as a table became available.
Well kept ale and nice food - perfect after a day walking around Bristol.
b. b.
Amazing pub, great service and food. Planning on visiting a lot from now on, the veggie/vegan food is fantastic. Great customer service who genuinely care.
N. G.
The place is incredible. The food, the people, the atmosphere - everything is amazing.
L. G.
Beautiful, hidden gem in Clifton, Bristol. Small interior but lovely inside. Family-run. Excellent selection on tap. Always get served with a FREEZING cold glass by the friendly barman. And the food is to die for, even for vegetarians!
J. S.
Lovely lamb and Pork roast dinners (beef and veg options also available) by the fire, lovely service in this family run pub. Food was brilliant, parsnip croquette and dauphinoise potatoes were a nice touch. The vegan apple crumble was also lovely. Would definitely go again.
A. A.
Delicious food: I had the salmon cake, and it comes with a avocado and cucumber salad. We spent only 18£ per person.
The beer was good; but we especially appreciate the welcoming atmosphere. Thanks!
S. H.
Visited on a Saturday evening so very busy but a nice pub. Food looked good so will definitely go back to try it.
M. M.
My sister and I booked a table last minute and were greeted by very friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. We ordered two vegan roasts and were just about to be served when we had a family emergency and had to leave. All the staff were super helpful and organised for our roasts to be taken away quickly. When we did get around to eating them, we were extremely happy! Absolutely delicious, quality ingredients, massive portions. We will definitely be returning very soon. Thank you very much guys, we appreciate you a lot!
J. L.
Good food. Great owners and pleasant atmosphere. Small but lovely garden space in the summer.
F. W.
Lovely little family pub with pretty decorations. The bar was spotless and flowers on every table. The burgers on the menu were very inventive with different flavours!

Unbeatable for Sunday lunch, the food is amazing, staff are friendly and helpful and the beer is great.
M. C.
Best roast in Bristol and all staff and the family who run it are lovely. Can't recommend this pub enough!
N. A.
Excellent Sunday roast with lovely vegetables, served by friendly staff, accompanied by pleasant beer and good wine at a reasonable price. Just what's required on a cold Sunday in November.
G. C.
Love this place. David and his wife run a fabulous pub, complete with a good selection of beers, wonderfully cosy atmosphere and by far the best Sunday roast in Bristol. Truly one of Bristol's hidden gems. 💎
B. S.
So good and the red wine 😍 definitely glad my ex double booked and he got the rubbish roast - ha
C. E.
Easily the best roast dinner I've had. My food intolerances were easily catered for and my meal was still as substantial as my partner's who has no dietary requirements. Reasonably priced and with staff who are friendly and know their stuff about allergens. I would highly recommend The Lion.
F. S.
The pub is cosy with a real fire too greet you. The food was plentiful, although they were only serving roast dinner as it was Sunday. Two of our chosen options were no longer available. Service was excellent and very friendly staff. My biggest bug bear were the toilets. Very dirty and you had to go outside. I would forgive having to go outside, but there is no excuse for not cleaning them properly. It needs a lot of elbow grease in my opinion. Otherwise, it was a pleasant experience...
S. L.
Delicious food great service and good value. Very filling meal. Caters easily for gluten and dairy free and veggie options. Our second visit. Will definitely go again. A regular venue for our grown children.
J. B.
Absolutely fabulous vegetarian Sunday roast & pudding, really friendly comfortable pub, totally recommend, great staff

Food was a 5/5 for sure! Wanted to eat there again the week we stayed in Bristol however the hours are a little weird for food (but we are not from England so maybe that's just us). So if you're looking for food, what I know is that the kitchen is closed Mondays and Tuesdays just a heads up. That's the only thing I wish, is that the website maybe gave the kitchen hours as well. Otherwise I loved the place, great vibe and lovely people!
R. L.
We eat here about twice a month and go to quiz nights inbetween. The food is consistently excellent, especially the Sunday roasts. My girlfriend is vegetarian and wont stop banging on about how good the vegetarian roast is. However the best part about this place is the staff who are fantastic! They are always welcoming and make an effort to get to know you, making the whole experience more personal.

Second time here today for Sunday lunch and didn’t disappoint! Great atmosphere, clean and tidy, the staff were quick, efficient and on the ball! The food was stunning and great sized portions, but couldn’t fit any pudding in though! So will definitely be leaving some room for the sweet tooth next time for sure. To all @ The Lion, take a bow.
H. W.
Thoroughly enjoyed Sunday roast here! Great choice of veg that comes with the dishes and really liked that the vegan roast wasn't missing out on anything that the meat options had! We came with a friend from Hungary who positively said this food gave him a good impression of English food and he really enjoyed it. The vegan apple crumble was also great! Will be recommending it to all vegan and non-vegan friends!!
A. Y.
Sunday Roast... interesting twist on traditional roast with addition of potato dauphinoise and cauliflower croquettes on the side of tender beef and all time favourites, such as roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding, all covered in thick delicious gravy. Divine! Will be back for more without a doubt! Thank you, The Lion. X
m. c.
First time for my husband and myself at The Lion on Easter Sunday with friends who went on Mother’s Day. Absolutely outstanding little pub. Staff are super friendly & attentive, food is stunning and huge portions. They offer gluten free and vegan options, everyone is catered for. Lots of choice with ciders and ales also. I would recommend a visit, it has a lovely buzzy atmosphere. We will certainly be returning!!!
S. D.
Best pub in Bristol. Friendly, charming local deep on the heart of Clifton Wood
B. H.
Lovely family run take away
Roast Dinner. 😋
Fiona is a good cook. 😃
We are very grateful
for you being open. 🙏
T. S.
Very friendly, helpful and proactive staff, a good choice of meats and veggie option for their Sunday roast and tasty puddings as well. The beef could have been ever so slightly rarer but my friend said the lamb was spot on. Other than that, a good experience. Would visit again.
A. M.
Staff are fantastic. Great atmosphere - new favourite place for a pint!
J. C.
Really nice spot. Family run pub, local and welcoming. Burgers are probably the best in bristol. Great choice, great chips. Pub quiz Wednesday is always popular so book a table ahead of time.
M. S.
Excellent food. Friendly staff. We had a very nice time and will be back.
R. V.
Very nice and cozy bar. Massive burgers. If want to go with just your partner, make a reservation of one of the tables far from the group tables, cause it's not a bug bar and it tends to get very loud.
B. Z.
Lovely local, great food and very sociable staff - A proper Gastro pub. My wife and I went for Sunday lunch (April 2015) with our 9 month old boy and we all enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and excellent food. Doombar on tap and bakewell tart for desert were a very pleasant bonus for me. We will, no doubt, be visiting again soon.
K. G.
Food & service were great. Prices were reasonable too. But we were seated at a table right Infront of the door and it was a very cold day and the pub was quite busy. So the door was opening and closing a lot, and also being held open for others. Very cold.
N. H.
Great Local Pub, lovely little playground next door, not joined, but close enough to get a drink and sit in the playground to watch your kids play. Haven't had food here, but have been told its great, especially the pizza.
D. B.
Nice enough pub in an affluent area. It has a nice selection of beers and ciders. Decor is nice and authentic, barman was friendly and welcoming. Prices were reasonable.
D. T.
Lovely local. Didn't try the food, but it looked great.
I. F.
Always fabulous, food and well-kept beers. Friendly family-run local. Getting ever harder to get a table, especially for their excellent Sunday lunch.
W. W.
Went for the vegan roast today, incredible. Massive portions so make sure you're Hungry!
Great atmosphere, delicious food, and lovely staff.
T. F.
Great family owned pub. The Sunday roast is one of the best I've ever had. Definitely visit! Open fires, cosy atmosphere. The perfect pub
B. H.
Nice place brings back memories when we used to live on the Ambrose.. hill climbing. on the Ambrose we used to say when we used to test ride the 750cc bikes. we used to ride back then.. one thing haven't changed you still see people from Bristol City council dosing in the car great place to hide when you're supposed to be in the office
D. G.
Fabulous 'takeaway' Sunday Lunch at the weekend. Massive portion. Enough for two of us and a small lunch on the Monday. Definitely worth ordering this even during lockdown!
R. S.
One of the best sunday roast in Bristol. The pub is in the heart of cliftonwood, it is quite old and that helps in setting the right atmosphere. The owner is really friendly and helpful, a very nice person. Probably toilets need some renovation, bu other than that is a strongly suggested place to visit.
M. B.
Very friendly, family-run pub. A whole A4 page of the menu is just burgers (such as The Canadian which involved bacon and maple syrup on the burger!).
Steps outside take you directly to the harbour (by the grain barge) and ferry stop so nice to weave it into a walk.
J. C.
This place is an absolute gem, I went for my birthday meal and we were treated to amazing food, wonderful service and great vibes. It's a beautiful pub in a great location and their beers are very well kept...
G. S.
I could not fault my experience at "The Lion" Very friendly and welcoming indeed. The The Sunday roast was brilliant! Full of flavour and cooked really well. Not to mention the great deserts. Wild horses could not stop me from going again!
B. S.
A town pub with a village feel- locals and staff and friendly, beer is good (CAMRA good) and the food is excellent. Don't expect fast food as they cook to order. Often very busy and bustling- sign of a popular pub! Very pet and children friendly, although we visit as a 'middle aged' couple and feel very at home.
I can recommend this pub- it's how a community pub should be. We (my wife, anyway) drive from Clevedon for a meal here, so I suggest you visit and make your own mind up!

Lovely pub more on the upmarket side. Large portions served. The food is average, but the staff is friendly and the service good.
E. C.
Friendly, welcoming, family run pub with the best pub food I have ever tasted. Hearty, well cooked food with a smile and run by people who truely care how your day went and how relaxing your evening is.
K.
Great pub. Great food and great service
G. M.
Nice wee boozer with a reasonable collection of 3 or 4 real always and lagers. Welcoming interior with plenty table and chairs. Haven't tried the food yet, but certainly smells enticing.
K.
Fantastic food, great service and a lovely atmosphere. The Reuben Burger was absolutely amazing (as were all of the other dishes we had).
Also: veggies have great choices to pick from as well!
J. L.
Fab place. Very warm and friendly atmosphere. Food portions are big and tasty. Always have veggie / vegan options.
T. P.
Such a good roast! First time back in a couple of years and it's still brilliant!
C. M.
Good English food, massive portions and excellent value for money. Service was very friendly. Well worth a second visit.
S. H.
DELICIOUS.
A lovely roast dinner with well cooked veg, (not overdone) plenty of meat and gorgeous potato daupinoise? sp. What's more it was actually hot.
The staff were both friendly and helpful and the puddiing (knickerbocker glory) was pure indulgence. Fabulous, I will definitely eat there again
V. H.
This is superb, I have now been 3 times and the food is extraordinary it's simply delicious I would definitely recommend.. we went today again food so tasty and service friendly and welcoming and it's so reasonably priced I will go again and again thank you so much ❤️

M. M.
Wonderful food, lovely atmosphere - really genuinely happy, friendly, helpful staff. You would find it difficult to find somewhere as welcoming.
S. W.
Very nice little back street boozer with a great little garden (little being the operative word). Not a great ale selection and very pricey but friendly staff.
P. J.
We had lunch here today and one of the best pub lunches we ever had. All the staff were very friendly and the entire place was 'buzzing ' and the real ale was first class
