We have visited Portishead many times but this was our first time at The Poacher and we were very pleasantly surprised. The food was good and great value; we had the fish and chips, it was tasty and well presented. The staff were all friendly and welcoming. We will definitely be back!

Spent a fantastic weekend staying at the poacher pub while visiting family. The king room and 1980 room were spotlessly clean and the beds were super comfortable. The pub itself has a real family run vibe and there’s always a warm welcome.

Enjoyed a fabulous Sunday roast here. Triple meat selection gave a tasty bit of each and all three were excellent, especially the chicken. Veggies were thoughtfully prepared and not just standard boiled veg. Really tasty dinner and pudding (lemon meringue cheesecake) was very rich and totally worth the calories

This is Pleasant looking pub. It was quite empty when we arrived they were having a live band play in the evening. The toilets were clean and tidy and smelt fresh. We ordered food but not all dishes were delivered correctly. The food however did taste good and the staff were friendly and welcoming. There is a lovely outdoor garden. I would recommend this place as a good place to visit - Please LIKE when you have read the review = thanks

Tried this pub again as it has changed owners and attitude.. According to their sales pitch. Just went for a beer with the dogs, sat outside at the front. Welcome was friendly, happy for me to try the ciders before I chose. Looked nice inside as though some effort had been put in. Will go for food next. Wow, Sian Powell & Gary Berwick have made a great job with this extensive refurbishment of The Poacher. A free house that was first licenced neck in 1683 and has seen many owners. It finally became known as The Poachers in the 1970's. "You really must disregard any reviews before it's relaunch on November 24th 2018." Review date: 13th December. Friendly staff, good beers and some great looking food. The interior is bright, clean and very welcoming. Gary and the staff at that time made you feel at home. The menu has a good selection to choose from but I had had to choose the 8oz rib eye steak cooked medium rare, and I must say, I was very impressed with the quality. It just fell apart with hardly any force at all. "As a note, medium rare is just that, a lovely pink colour." The plates even came out pre warmed and the chips were double cooked. Very enjoyable with the rich creamy peppercorn sauce. But, a picture can tell a thousand words, so here are a few I took. It's well worth the visit. Regards D & Happy Christmas.

Ok, I've given this lovely place a 5 despite having barely any drinks when we visited, only cider or Guinness on draft. However they explained the reason and completely understandable as the mum and daughter are taking over the pub and delivery was delayed. What a friendly welcome we had though! So accommodating and we will be back. They allowed us to use their carpark overnight with our van conversion. We will certainly be back in the future as we were pleasantly surprised by Portishead as well. Good luck with the take over and see you again soon! What an absolute gem! My friend and I popped in on Sunday evening at around 20:30. We were greeted by a couple of very friendly locals and equally pleasant staff and the landlord. Surprisingly, they were generous enough to place dishes of leftover roast potatoes - from the Sunday menu - around the bar and tables in nice big white roasting dishes, along with side plates and cutlery, for patrons to help themselves gratis! They went down very nicely with the couple of pints of perfectly stored/poured Guinness I had. My friend ate enough of them to sink a hefty seagoing vessel too! We very much enjoyed the comfy Chesterfield-style sofas next to a log burner (wasn't lit due to it being very quiet and already generously heated). Had I not already had a skinfull, I'd have happily sat for hours sinking many pints of perfect Guinness! Beautifully decorated with a comfortable and tasteful ambience. I've become very fond of this place already (can you tell?!) and highly recommend it. We'll be trying the menu next time, which I'll review in due course. Thank you for a lovely couple of hours!

My only qualification is that I went there for an afternoon meeting at which we had tea and biscuits - no basis for a comprehensive judgment of a pub! But we were made very welcome, the beer selection looked good as did the bar menu from my quick glance at it. It's not that close to my home but if the idea of going there for drinks or a meal came up I'd be keen!

Friendly staff... small rooms but perfectly adequate. Food a little over priced in my opinion. A little confused on why my room had a key in the door as when I asked the staff member she said the room would of been cleaned. The room had not been touched... All round it is a really nice place to stay and I will visit again in the 12 weeks I'm down here working.

Comfortable bed, but could of done with a fan as still very hot when we stayed, we had to buy our own as they wouldn't supply one, and it needed a lamp next to bed. Windows were rotten at the bottom and not shut properly. Had to remind staff a few times to give our free basic breakfast and drinks. Not very 60s room, they didn't supply us with a photo of it before we got there. The stairs leading up to the flats need replacing as the handrail was wobbly and unsafe and the concrete steps were narrow and slippery when wet

Wow!!! Can't believe how brilliantly this place has been turned around! The interior has a gleaming new refurbishment, the staff are delightful and the food is exquisite! Well worth a visit!

It's had a recent refurb and has been done fairly well. Unlike the previous owners in the past, the new custodians keep the establishment clean and tidy. <br/>The menu they offer is varied dependant on the day of the week. The food is well cooked and well presented but most of all very very tasty. <br/>I don't know if it is a regular thing but we were able to run a tab and settle up at the end of the evening and pay by card. This allowed the kids to order soft drinks at will, which made them feel very grown up. <br/>The best bit for me was that even though they have worked hard to raise the standard and image of the pub, they still welcome dogs in. Nothing better than taking your best friend for a pint. <br/>Well done Poacher, my second visit was as good as my first since the overhaul, I look forward to the Gin Fest in the Summer.<br/>07/06/19<br/>This pub goes from strength to strength. It's Friday night and very busy full of lovely people and laughter, tucking into what looks like delicious food, too bad the wife's put a chicken in the oven. (Not a euphemism). I can hear a band warming up in the adjacent room, we've found our new local. What a great place just what this town needed.

We stayed overnight and the room was very good value, clean, a comfortable bed and nice and quiet. It was Karaoke night and the staff were very entertaining, excellent singers and full of fun. As “residents” we stayed til they stopped serving drinks. It was a true pub and obviously very popular with locals. No breakfast but there is a great cafe on the business park at the end of the village.

Loads of free parking. Room (1940s style) nice and clean. Separate toilet shower good size. Previous reports of green light on emergency lighting too bright at night has been sorted with a suitably placed bit of black tape. Only gripe is it's a bit noisy til about 10:30pm but it is a highstreet pub after all.

Had Sunday lunch here today with my family. My Granddaughter had children’s tomato pasta with garlic bread which she loved. The rest of us all had roast beef. There was a choice of size. £13 or £16. It was absolutely fantastic. Tasty meat, great Yorkshire’s and all the veg was lovely. A couple of us also had dessert. Sticky toffee pudding and a caramel cake which we really enjoyed. The barmaid/waitress was brilliant. She really looked after us well. Will be back soon.

The Poacher has a lovely atmosphere and is nicely redeveloped. I stayed last night and the rooms are clean and functional, and the staff made an effort to arrange for my breakfast so i could make an early start. competitively priced warm and friendly, the breakfast was excellent too.

Fantastic food and such friendly, welcoming staff. Great drinks selection and caters well for vegetarians. There's different events on at various times, from live bands, theme nights and festivals which is great and has really made a difference to a sometimes, very sleepy Portishead! Don't hesitate to try this place if you haven't already.

Delighted with our meal at The Poacher this evening, ambience, drinks, food and service were all excellent. And as an aside, when we commented that the dessert was less than perfect we were immediately given a full refund (on the price of the dessert) which didn't expect and would in any event have planned to return. I can thoroughly recommend this excellent local establishment and hope it gets the support it deserves.

Stayed for 2 nights, good value for money but bear in mind the pub doesn't open until 12, also no hairdryers so bring your own. Watch out if you leave anything behind as I almost didn't get something back - but would definitely return and make sure I packed properly. Take all reviews pre November 2018 with a pinch of salt. The Poacher has recently been taken over and completely refurbished. The interior is now CLEAN, bright, airy and has style! The pipes have been renewed and the beer/alses taste great with a wide range of choice. The wine selection is good and reasonably priced. Had Sunday roast there today and the beef was beautifully pink and melt in the mouth (I believe all/most of the meats are sourced from the fantastic Butchers directly opposite the pub). The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. I can whole heartedly recommend this newly renovated pub for just drinks or food... Or both!
