Reviews of City Arms

We had a great time, very good ciders and joined such a party feeling that we will definitely be back and will be spreading the word about it. Thank you!
J. H.
Located on Quay Street in Cardiff City centre opposite the main entrance to the iconic Principality Stadium
The City Arms is a well established pub and a member of the " S A Brains " family though now taken over by Marston ' s Brewery
Recently refurbished with the great addition of a comfortable lounge available for private hire on the first floor
Great to see Gary back behind the bar
He is genuinely nice guy and prides himself on running a "proper pub " frequented by real pub goers who enjoy quality beers with a great welcome and atmosphere
A must visit for real beer drinkers when visiting the city
c. S.
Lovely pub good location good for watching your sports friendly atmosphere
T. H.
Popped in last night by chance and there was a traditional music session on. It was a magical experience, I will definitely be back and will be spreading the word about this little unknown gem. So wonderful to see a local pub keeping Welsh culture alive. Thank you!
M. G.
A traditional spit-and-sawdust pub in the heart of Cardiff. The atmosphere was very relaxed when I visited, although the 'recently played' list on the jukebox made me wonder if that's always the case.
Good selection of beers for a pub of its size, although only one non-alcoholic beer (I think it was heineken 0). The lady behind the bar was very friendly.
D. M.
Was there about 2:45 on A Wednesday afternoon. As well as the regulars there were supporters of schools teams playing in the Millennium Stadium. Service was great and the pint of Brains SA was excellent. The place was spotless and the staff worked hard to do that with great customer service.
A. R.
The City Arms is a proper pub in the heart of Cardiff with a rich Rugby history. As well as being a real they serve a great selection of ales.
d. a.
Proper pub in city centre with decent selection of drinks and knowledgeable staff.
Why go to spitspoons when you can go here!
June 2022 - still the same, upstairs function room now advertised
S. B.
Great crafted beer. A really drinkers pub. Still one of the best pubs in Cardiff for Brains Beer.
S. P.
A must stop for any lovers of real ale. Between six/seven guest ales, along with a permanent Brains selection. Keg offerings, along with some lagers, ciders, spirits etc. Eclectic clientele and friendly staff. Worth a visit for a pint or five.
p. s.
Nice friendly pub and a good pint of Brains beer
S. P.
Went in two night in a row excerlant it was Sunday night they had karaoke on was welcomed by the locals and staff will be going again when back in Cardiff
S. C.
A traditional local style pub close to the Principality Stadium. There is a good range of beers in addition to the stock Brains fare. The Cardiff RNA have their fortnightly beanos here. It is great to see ex-mil guys treated so well by the landlord and staff.
D. F.
Fantastic little pub. Staff polite and friendly and work quickly to get you served.
A. L.
Fantastic beers, great prices & friendly staff & good atmosphere
M. R.
Nice pint of SA Brains and the beef mince pie was great. 10 ale taps on the bar with only 3 in use why?? As I was in Halloween weekend. Use them or remove them. Dog friendly my dog was spoilt rotten. Bartender lovely and attentive.
R. S.
Great pub, always visited and love the atmosphere they can create and the excellent service the provide.
P. H.
An old style city pub with character (and characters!). Some very good ales. Toilets could certainly benefit from some modernisation.
M. B.
Great pub with a huge selection of beers, porters & ciders. Staff knowledgeable about them too.
J. S.
Can't say better things about this. Gary is an amazing landlord, and keeps probably the best pint of Dark in the land.
J. C.
Proper spit and sawdust pub. Great ale and company
G. R.
Top night out. Friendly staff. Good range of drinks. Thank you.
D. H.
Update to my review of 4 years ago... It's not what it used to be. Not the real ale Mecca it once was, just the standard choice of drinks of many other pubs nowadays.
I love this pub, particularly when town isn't busy. A great choice of beer & proper old school atmosphere.
D. P.
Old school Cardiff pub. Well run, decent beer, great location
J. H.
Friendly service, great, clean and cosy pub, beautiful Christmas tree. Proper pub atmosphere with regular customers on the day I went.
A. H.
Decent pub and lovely staff, but the beer range has dropped off a cliff, presumably because of Marstons involvement.
C. S.
Great place to have night out. Plenty of all different drinks to try you will the drink you like.
P. R.
Went there on a Friday evening near Christmas so it was a bit boozy in the bar
The lounge was quieter and decent to have a relaxed drink
J. M.
Great pub with excellent choice if real ales and decent beer. Old school, proper pub in city centre location opposite gates of principality Stadium.
L. B.
A fabulous find! Small group of hens from Bristol, the pub was right up our street! Great music, drinks, super friendly staff!
M. R.
Lack of interesting guest beers, shame it it used to have a huge selection.
J. P.
Great selection of beers and some pretty strong ones as well.
G. S.
Seems to have gone a bit downhill. Was once known for its great selection of craft ale, beers and ciders. Now just serves run of the mill stuff.
J. s.
Awesome pub authentic experience and really good choices as well as the Classic Brains beers
T. C.
Full range of brains beers and excellent service
M. M.
Don't know how they keep such cool on match day!
G. P.
Good beer, nice staff, definitely a good place to stop for either a cheeky pint, or an all evening sesh.
C. J.
I love this place. If you want a fresh, trendy atmosphere look elsewhere, but otherwise they serve wonderful beer, cider and whisky from all over the UK and world. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
One suggestion? Have some playing cards behind the bar! We forgot ours over the weekend and it would have great if you'd had some.
M. R.
Decent, very typical pub. All you need really, well placed and a good pint for reasonable price
G. I.
Always a great welcome. Croeso da bob tro. 👍
S. L.
Traditional proper pub, friendly service and nice beer
M. T.
Good pub, good vibe whilst visiting Cardiff. Served shipyard. Watched the darts. Good stuff!
O. n.
Paradise for beer lovers. Very appropriate decoration and music. Got recommended a selection of welsh ales that were delicious. The bartender was guiding me towards the tasting and was open to offer samples of other beers to fulfill my curiosity. Even though I was alone, looks like a cool place to catch up with friends. Thumbs up!
P. K.
Proper pub with some reasonable beers. We went just before a rugby .Arch and it was rammed but still good.
c. m.
Nice atmosphere great beer x
J. N.
If this place could seat more people, it would be my first choice watering hole. Always a good selection of beers.
M. W.
Nice, old pub with hand pumped beer. Nice staff every time I've gone. We've shut it down a few times and they never seem to rush us out, although, we do leave at close. Twice now, we've come on band rehearsal night, where there's this little old folk band trying out tunes. Makes for a fun experience.
G. O.
Great little pub in the heart if Cardiff with a very extensive range of beers on offer. Am not really a drinker myself so can comment on these as I was just here meeting some friends. The service from the staff working there was very prompt and friendly and the atmosphere if the place was very welcoming and friendly too. A very nice place.
D. J.
Friendly staff and clientele. Lots of rugby memorabilia on the walls, and beermats from around the world, reflecting the pub's commitment to offering a wide range of beers. They put the Italy Ireland rugby on TV. Would make an ideal location for a drink before a game at the Principality Stadium or the Arms Park.
A. M.
Great pint and really friendly service in a proper pub...
J. C.
A nice little pub in the heart of Cardiff, a stone's throw from the Principality Stadium. Brains beer on cask and keg (very well kept), with plenty of other choices for those who prefer an alternative to ale. Very busy on match days, so get there early if that's where you want to watch the game. Only criticism would be that service can be slow when busy. They could sometimes do with more staff behind the bar.
D. J. I.
Icommensd the pint of San Miguel
homely vibe lots of wood surfaces.
Makes it comfortable and kinda sleepy
D. B.
A great selection of both cask & keg beer from a wide variety of breweries in addition to Brains' beers. The staff are welcoming and friendly & happy to advise on choice of beer. Pleasant ambience makes this a very popular pub based in the centre of Cardiff.
S. M.
Oldish looking pub oppersit the melenium stadium in cardiff
N. J.
Love this pub. I have been visiting this pub since I was 12 (now 29). It's been our go to bar when we go to see Wales play. One thing to note you will most likely end up stood outside as its too small to cater for the quantity of rugby fans if your going on game day.
S. P.
Calm atmosphere, cheap as, friendly staff
I. C.
Great pub. Lots of good beers that are changed regularly, so there's always something new to try.
The only downside for me is that the toilets are often smelly and could do with a clean. But that's always going to happen in a popular, busy pub such as this.
R. H.
Rough 'n' ready 'n' rowdy, City Arms has a good range of ales, a great atmosphere, and not nearly enough seats. But who needs to sit down when you're having an awesome night in the heart of Cardiff? An excellent location, right by the Principality Stadium.
J. J.
City Arms I've been there quite a few times now. Through the week it's a good place to go. Because Sometimes they have an artist there. So you can just sit and chill, with your partner or friends. the city Arms is a nice little pub to go to. try it out.. guys ! 👍👍👍👍👍 thanks ,,,,, Jay
S. C.
Classic city pub. This used to be all spit- and-sawdust and rammed full to bursting. Now it more classy and fancy. Loads of guest beers and plenty of room on a Saturday night. It is really close to the Stadium so obvs very full on a match day.
J. S.
Probably some of the best drinks in town. I swear I'm not biased. Perhaps a little. But that being said the service is top-notch. Well done chaps. Keep up the good work! 😊
A. A.
Not as good as it was but still a tidy pint
m. t.
Great pub fantastic drinks and atmosphere. The range of real ales and ciders is extensive . A bit pricey, but worth it. Also close to womanby st. Live , music and clubs and a Witherspoon's for cheaper beer.
T. B.
Excellent real ales and ciders. Very knowledgeable staff. Friendly atmosphere. Across the road from the main entrance to The Principality Stadium. Adjacent to the music club centre of Cardiff. What's not to like!😁
G. P.
Always a good selection of beers. If they got rid of the Brains rubbish I would give them 5 stars. Generally a good atmosphere but can get very busy at times. Staff are very friendly and well informed.
J. R.
Proper city center pub full of people and nice and warm.
B. P.
Probably the best pub in Cardiff. Worth risking Cardiff city centre on a weekend for. Nice atmosphere even though it can get crowded on a Friday or Saturday. A proper British pub. Great selection of ales and lagers some straight from cask. Helpful, friendly bar staff who know about what they're serving. Proper old-fashioned pint glasses.
R. B.
Lovely old pub, great staff, thoroughly enjoyed our visit
R. B.
Pub has recently changed hands, it is no longer a real ale or craft beer bar, it's now a sports bar with a standard sports bar drinks offering.
b. 7.
Great old school city centre pub, friendly and enjoyable night
S. S.
Probably the best drinking pub in Cardiff. Always got a fine selection of ale, cider etc and most excellent staff. Prime position right by the Stadium to boot!!
T. G.
Probably the largest selection of ales, lagers and ciders in Cardiff. You can find this great Cardiff pub just off Westgate St, right beside the Principality Stadium. Not a foody pub, but for beer connoisseurs it's the place to be. Go there and see for yourself.
n.
Better than the urban tap house over the road. Good selection of beer and cider. Update 24/12/29; The only thing I'd add to this is that most of the bar staff are great but there is one male employee, short dark hair who was working this afternoon (24/12/19) who is obnoxious. I've had similar issues with the same person in the past; won't acknowledge customers or so blunt and rude that it puts you off going. Seems to think he is better than the customers. My colleagues feel the same and I'm probably the least sensitive person you could meet in terms of worrying about socially inept staff members. It does make you wonder why this person works in the service industry and why he is allowed to continue working there. He's so bad I'm going to contact Brains brewery directly.
S. S.
Just an ok pub. Decent atmosphere but definitely on the pricey end. I would be hesitant to return.
D. K.
Very nice local pub that's got a very large selection of ales and imported beers. Lots of places to sit. Does not allow stag parties. Can get very busy on game day as right next to the stadium.
G. R.
One of my fave pubs for the decor, people and choice of beers. Currently able to see a live beer list on their app too.
E. L.
Nice pub with a good selection of ales (and ciders). Like most town centre pubs or gets busy on match days (born international and before and after blues). It doesn't show matches and is generally a place where you can chat
E. R.
Great selection of ales and ciders, the staff really know their stuff! And the atmosphere is cosy, welcoming, and a wonderful old school traditional pub.
S. N.
An excellent range of beers than change regularly with friendly staff.
As ever the toilets aren't great but more recently the prices seem to have increased significantly hence the 4 star rating.
G. K.
Pre drinks opposite the principality stadium
S. J.
Best real ale in Cardiff, every pint was outstanding and the barman knew his trade inside out, located opposite the WRU stadium and across the road from the Tiny Rebel brewery pub
N. B.
No longer did gluten free beer no didn't even know what I was talking about, felt like we were an inconvenience to their locals.
S. L. (. C.
Always a good place to start our night out. Nice atmosphere and clientele.
S. S.
A gem of a traditional pub, the type of which are few and far between in Cardiff City Centre. An excellent selection of craft ales from around the world. Live music on a Friday night.
S. A.
Very good place. Always come here. Even better now you can take your drink outside permanently now.
They were very understaffed though in the 17 May 2019. On a Friday a busy night that is not good. The bar was packed and they called last orders earlier than expected because of this. This needs to be avoided
A. A. (.
Comfortable pub in the city centre, with a constantly varied selection of unusual beverages, along with the usual Brains offerings. Friendly staff, opens late, but probably somewhere to avoid on on matchdays unless you like crowds...
M. C.
A cider festival always makes my day! A nice little pub with a huge selection of ciders and real ales. The only real downside is that google wasn't showing it on my searches. And the men's is scented with stale urine air fresheners.
T. M.
Great little real ale House in the heart of Cardiff in a good sun trap all year round, one of a few traditional pubs left in Cardiff with a bit of character.
J. B.
I don't go in here very often because I'm not a fan of the crowd that it attracts and it's usually a bit too cramped.
But in regards to ale and appearance it's pretty awesome. It's hard to explain how it looks so instead while your in Cardiff go check it out. It's in the city centre so your not going out of your way.
R. C.
Very friendly traditional pub pub
D. b.
Great selection of ales and lagers.
K. C.
A small but great pub!
Nice atmosphere, a small but great pub with specialty beers and ciders and friendly staff.
Also currently an awesome pub quiz the first Tuesday of every month!
P. M.
Great pub excellent beer
M. N.
Fun times always with friends at City Arms. Community feel, great beers rotated often and the bar is in the round looking out to busy streets every day of the week.
K. L.
Quick drink before heading to the escape rooms.
M. C.
Amazing beer selection and knowledgeable staff. Don't be put off by the dated interior. This really is an ale lover's paradise.
J. I.
One of favourite pubs in Cardiff, great staff, good mix of people, drinks reasonably priced. Women's toilet could do with being refurbished maybe
J. O.
In my opinion, one of the best pubs in the city centre. Have a good selection of guest beers and ciders as well as what you'd normally expect.
B. J.
Great real ales and super cheap for Brains! Old fashioned vibe, not at all pretentious which is so refreshing in town. First time there this Saturday - loved it.
T. H.
Probably the only real Brains pub left in the city centre. Good beer and if your a cider drinker excellent choice of varying strengths staff always gives a warm welcome.
M. E.
A good variety of Beer's and Ciders! Friendly Staff! Famous on Rugby Match Days! Thanks to the Management and Bar staff! Cheers! Mad
S. B.
Great bartender. Helpful & friendly. Ask for Andy. Buy him a pint! Was told by locals it's a truly local place. Hello to Lloyd & Beth!
D. R.
Greatvpre-match location. Full of locals and rugby fans in the right mood and sing song voice. Beer quality was very good
L. J.
Decent local pub with a good range of beers
t. l.
Always a cracking pint and great service from staff.
V. S.
Absolutely top class ales and great staff in this traditional drinkers pub if I lived in Cardiff this would definitely be my local love it!
G. M.
Lush pub with excellent and varied real ale, beer and cider choice. Staff usually are fantastic at finding you the drink you want.
M. D.
Would give it a five but being churlish, still miss their jukebox from a couple of decades and more ago.
G. D.
This pub has been ruined, used to be a friendly, lively place
S. A. H.
Friendly city pub with lots of cask ales, first one I tried was a bit stale, when I pointed it out to the landlord he immediately checked the barrel and confirmed it was near the end, he changed it and replaced the pint which then came up to standard, dog friendly, would definitely come back.
N. W.
Love this pub. Cracking selection of beer's and really friendly staff and you can have beer in a barrel glass. Happy days
B. M.
At least 10 different cask and 16 different draft ales! All standard price with friendly locals and staff. Would definitely recommend if in Cardiff
A. W.
Always a pleasure to go to this City Centre pub - staff knowledgeable about the wide selection of cask ale and craft beer - no food unless you fancy crisps and maybe a pickled egg
M. G.
Great pub.. Just does what it says on the tin
A. L.
Nice pub, great beer selecton. But not great for watching sport as pillars in the way everywhere. Also toilets not the cleanest or nicest smelling!
H. F.

A. J. W.
Fantastic. The most "normal" pub experience in Cardiff during all this Covid hysteria. Well done.
D. L.
Classic looking pub pub but with a very upto date draught and bottled beer selection. A great place for a proper pint in the city centre.
M. R.
Great pub. Lots of lovely beers and very friendly. One of the best pubs in Cardiff.
D. L.
You can't fault the City Arms. A great range of real ale, no loud music, late opening. A great place to end the night if you want to chat and avoid a dusty throat.
S. L.
Traditional Cardiff pub with brilliant memorabilia on the walls. Still serving a good pint.
