Reviews of The Conway

Amazing food and service. We visited on the 5th of April 2022 and the staff working that evening was absolutely lovely. The place itself is very homey and charming. Now, the food. It's your typical pub food, only 10 times better + with ACTUAL veggie and vegan options (not just a sad basic Beyond meat burger). I had the gnocchis which were fresh and obviously homemade. My partner had chicken which was delicious too. The desserts (stick toffee pudding for him, banana bread for me) were amazing as well. We will be back for sure! 100% recommend. It's so nice to have great pub food.

Great place! Friendly and kind staff. Great food quality. We felt very comfortable eating inside. There are some tables outside too. We had the chorizo scotch egg(with roasted garlic alioli), fish and chips and focaccia BLT. Not expensive at all. Highly recommendable!

Had a wonderful three course Sunday lunch at The Conway. Great service and the staff were so polite and welcoming. Away from the hussle and bustle of the city, the pub is ideallic and feels like a home from home.
The menu has a range of dishes to serve everyone's dietary requirements.
Would very much recommend to anyone!
L. B.
Food much better than usual pub grub. All items on lunch menu £9. Decent selection of ales and wines
S. K.
Went there for our second time today. This really is a really great place. We've gone for the ham hock both times and it is to die for, couldn't recommend it more. We managed to fit in desert after the server told us what was especial good and it was a perfect end to lunch.
Parking can be a little difficult but we've managed to find some spaces down the road by the wine shop both times. It shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just keep an eye out for parking permit spaces and make sure you're not in one.

Really lovey food. One downside was the lack of alcohol-free options. Only Becks Blue when there are plenty of nicer options these days.
m. E.
Good food, helpful staff and a very pleasant atmosphere . A great experience.
D. M.
Good food and atmosphere, a little pricy. I the dish I wanted wasn't in stock which was mildly disappointing.
P. W.
Nicely refurbished traditional pub in a leafy suburb. Prices are steep - which is reflective of the local area - but the beer is good. Service was excellent - extremely friendly - and they fitted us in for drinks on two busy nights even though we hadn't booked. Didn't eat, but other customers seemed very happy. Would definitely return when in the area.

Great Sunday night quiz. Saying say to be the hardest (and most rewarding) in Cardiff
S. C.
This used to be a regular local pub but now it's a dead fancy gastropub. Not sure what the food is like but the fish and chips looked nice.
A.
Great food, quite fancy and varied. Still a nice homely feel to this gastropub. Service is very good, manager is great and very enthusiastic and always seems to be at work (and probably deserves a holiday!).
J. B.
Very nice staff 👍

WOW having just moved to the area we wanted to try the local pub. It happened to be my birthday. We had an early meal all social distancing was perfect Kelvin was amazing the food and service was top notch. He overheard my wife toast my birthday and at the end of a delightful meal he showed up with the birthday surprise. Old time service is still alive and well at the Conway! They definately have 2 new regulars. Thanks!
P. M.
Superb place to eat, staff are friendly, excellent service and the food is incredible will definitely be going again.
A hidden gem without a doubt one if the best places I have visited, thank you
P.
I visited the Conway on Sunday with a group of friends and had a great time. The food was good if a little pricey as was the drinks although not unexpected.
But the best part of the evening came after we had finished and we're about to leave.
There was a weekly quiz which we decided to stay and enter. It was fairly hard but great fun and a few of us will be there regularly (without any great expectations)
Would definitely recommend!

Sat outside here on Saturday afternoon for a few hours. Superb pub in lovely surroundings. Sank quite a few ales and guinesses and had a great time chatting with the locals, having a laugh. The beers were lovely, with a good selection and decent price. Would highly recommend this place for a few drinks, particularly if it's sunny. The food looked really good, unfortunately and regretfully we didn't have any though :(
T. R.
The food was amazing. It was like an upscale dish, presented very fashionably, was full of flavour and was a good sized portion. Their provision for toddlers is good, my 17 month old enjoyed the books.
The staff are very friendly.
My only concern was I didn't see or was told the price of my beer before I ordered it. I felt it was a bit expensive. But then, I don't often drink out!
Overall we really enjoyed our time there and will be going back.
P. M.
still a nice pub to sit outside off .
L. J.
Food ain't what it used to be but the beer is great. French fries?! What happened to the awesome thrice cooked hand made chips. Sweet potato curry was orange and rice white. Could've done with some green coriander? And the poppadoms were still dripping with oil. Lacking the little details but still a lovely place to visit.
O. V.
Great staff, lovely food. I had the Aranchini. Well nice.

Really delicious good food, more restaurant than pub so don't expect huge portions but taste is top priority here! Great atmosphere on a Saturday night & very good service with a smile. Highly recommend!
P. J.
Popped in on Wednesday steak deal night. Food was good standard, as always. Staff were friendly and a bit overwhelmed.
New staff member was sweet but had obviously not received any training,
Toilets were disgusting as normal. Water all over the gents floor, enough to wade through. Staff informed but nothing changed. As usual.
C. W.
Good food, friendly staff

We went here for Sunday lunch with family and each of us ordered a different dish: the roast pork dinner; the beef dinner and the hake. Each meal was quite pleasant but you only get new potatoes and a small amount of samphire(?) with the hake which was also quite small in size. I am always disappointed when I get a roast dinner and don’t get a Yorkshire pudding with it – I know that traditionally they only come with roast beef meals but it would have been nice to have had one with my pork, which I found a little chewy. However, the seasonal vegetables and the sauce that accompanied the meal was delicious. The atmosphere was also quite pleasant as the pub is light and airy and the staff very friendly.
M. M.
First of all, before you order a drink or decide where to sit; order the burger with cheese and bacon!!!
Simoly put this burger was a festival of flavours for the tongue. It's a must try AND a must try again...and again...and again...........and again.
In terms of the pub itself it's absolutely lovely. Great selection of beers, brilliant decor and layout and a very nice little outside area for summer evenings!
Check this place out!

If you're a bit of an pub snob, this provided a quieter classier pub experience than the more touristy options in Central Cardiff. Great food, if a bit pricey. They take it seriously though, it's regularly rotated on the blackboards and they use seasonal ingredients. Had a selection of local ales and cider. Friendly staff, and tucked away in residential area seemed more authentic.
Only short walk from the park!
K. S.
Lovely little pub with restaurant area to the rear. The restaurant has a living room feel to it, with books and kids toys to occupy little hands while you relax. The conway burger is huge and really good - plus they do two for one on some of their mains on certain days and this includes the burger. Good prices, friendly staff, great little place.
S. N.
The Conway is a nice pub with excellent decor. The beer range is average. Food seems decent too. Staff have generally been nice and friendly.
The prices are on the more expensive side, but it is Pontcanna, which means most food and drink outlets are desperate to charge a premium based purely on location and nothing else at times. This is more a statement of fact rather than any criticism as I would expect prices of the range at such pubs.
Overall it's a nice venue though.
E. N.
Terrific every changing menu and great atmosphere. Always packed which just proves that it is a great place to either just have a few pints after work or some lovely fresh cooked food.
Had the fish and chips and it is the best one I have had in Cardiff so far. Great tartar sauce with mushy peas and the fish was thick and flaky and the batter was nice and crispy. My husband and a chorizo mash with chicken and it was also lovely. They use local based ingredients and you can see that the quality is there and the price is really fair.
Highly recommend if you are in the area. Come early, it fills up quickly!
R. G.
Popped in for a drink last Sunday. Staff were very accommodating as we needed to feed our little one. Didn't get a chance to have food ourselves but the menu looked nice
C. V.
Fantastic service. We hadn't booked but they accommodated us and fed us!! Lovely staff. Very friendly.
J. M.
Very friendly staff but food today was a little below par. Very tough, overcooked chicken breast but others had the beef and brisket which they said was delicious.
G. W.
Decent pub in a lovely area of Cardiff. Very. Ice food and good beers
S. H.
Very good food, had the lunch special, cod loin, chorizo and alioli, 😋 reasonable prices. Friendly staff and allows well behaved dogs in part of the pub. Very close to Llandaff Fields
M. D.
Great food and a good selection of drinks. Family and dog friendly.
P. G.
Good friendly service. Popular in Summer so get there early to drink on the terrace. Food well prepared and good value especially their lunchtime menu. Good selection of reasonably priced tapas.
P. M.
Fantastic atmosphere, amazing food and friendly staff. Highly recommended, one of the best pub/restaurants I've visited! Dogs also welcome. Hands down, amazing place
E. J.
A good menu, decent food and friendly pleasant staff. Always busy with locals, however lacks a little of the character of some of the more traditional pubs nearby.
B. G.
Brilliant restaurant and pub. Friendly staff and quick service. It's a bit small so booking is usually essential, especially on the busier days and for Sunday roast (which is awesome). Some seating outside too.
l. s.
The staff are always really friendly & atmosphere is wonderful but the food menu can sometimes be a bit hit and miss (and overpriced). It's always good to check the blackboard before booking a reservation.
L. W.
Friendly and helpful service, clean and pleasant atmosphere, delicious food. Highly recommend!
E. F.
Haven't eaten here so can't speak for the food (I've heard good things though). BUT it's definitely a nice place have a drink, always a friendly atmosphere and dog friendly
S. H.
This is quite honestly a local gem. My first time there and I was very impressed with the service. The food was just incredible, priced well and didn't have to wait long at all.
Will definitely be returning in the near future!
P. S.
Nice selection of real ales and other assorted drinks. Not too busy on a Friday night so getting served was easy. Not too sure about the late night freeform live music though
R. J.
I was a bit disappointed with the Sunday roast. The roast potatoes were hard and the Yorkshire pudding was way too crispy. It wasn't inedible but I was expecting better for the price.
S. G.
Loved the food, which is completely homemade. Cosy place, love the atmosphere. However, there's not enough staff and I found the ones there very slow in serving and useless with information.
S. S.
A well-established and popular gastropub with a traditional "pubby" end and one end for eating. Beer selection is generally good with an emphasis on the currently fashionable super-IPA's - but always including the truly dreadful Greene King IPA. Service is always quick and polite. This is a very professional establishment. Menu is a mix of traditional gastropub favourites and more adventurous dishes. Vegetarian options always available but are not usually up to the standard of the rest of the menu, and expensive - £13 for a pearl barley risotto which we found tasteless and boring is too much money. I've been going to The Conway in its various guises for about 25 years now and have always enjoyed my time there. Dogs welcome in the drinking zone, children's toys and comfy sofas, outside seating on street. I like this pub.
T. S.
Nice pub but no dogs, for me loses a couple of stars.
S. K.
Sumptuous Sunday family meal at The Conway today. The roast ribeye especially was a highlight. I even gave a tip and people and as people who know me will tell you, that is very rare. Recommended 👌🏻
M. S.
Great gastro pub. Clean and simple setting
M. F.
Decent roast, only gripe would be slightly under cooked parsnips. Was very tasty otherwise.
Snickers tart with peanut brittle was amazing though.
D. P.
Nice food, expensive drinks (over £5 for a pint)
L. B.
Whenever I visit Cardiff, I ALWAYS go to the Conway. Excellent food, amazing service, friendly staff. You can't go wrong!

A. J.
Nice place. Food was ok. But had to send back one meal as the sausages were not cooked enough.
L. J.
Ok as a pub. The food is very good, and reasonably priced. They sometimes have 2 for the price of one. Which makes a good meal cheap.

(Translated) Nice pub even if the atmosphere is not really typical pub. The service is pleasant and very efficient, ask to taste your beer before ordering the pint, they will give you a test with pleasure. Quality food and plentiful supply for a balanced price. A little disappointed with the lack of specialties but everything else is compensated. Serve dishes late (until 9:30 p.m.).
(Original)
