Reviews of The Gatekeeper - JD Wetherspoon

Nice, Friendly Staff & plenty of covid guidance in place. Supported me to use App as was having difficulty - upon entry I was greeted by a group of Males smoking by main entrance & a Bin Lorry that stank , I don't smoke but could smell it when I sat down & had my drink - I found it unfair that Non Disabled people were using disabled toilets "because they regulars" yet I had to use toilets that felt like an age away - not the best wetberspoons I've been to but 4* is what I give as staff did try help me
G. J.
Strange forbThr Gatekeeper to be quiet but still the foid and drink served quickly and with a smile. A few football fans in recovering from last night but great yo have some banter with them.
S. B.
Great location, close to the Principality Stadium and plenty of room for large groups to meet. Food is well priced and good quality and service is quick. Even at busy times.
N. J.
It's a 'Spoons', had a crafty pint before going to the stadium. Cheep and cheerful, was rammed! Mr Sheeran could've had something to do with that. I liked the local details that this franchise puts into their pubs.
A. B.
Spoilt for choice with Wetherspoons in Cardiff, but this is my favourite. Plenty of space in here, downstairs and upstairs, plenty of tables to sit and eat a meal. Some of the guest ales are superb, and very cheap! Some cool bars on the street to move onto too. Only niggle, is if you're downstairs, the only loos are a trek upstairs, a pain if you've a bladder the size of an orange!
K. W.
I enquired about low alcohol/alcohol free gin but there was nothing available. 10/10 to the barman who gave me a lemonade in a gin glass so i would fit in with the other hens 😂.
Shame about the low/no alcohol options though!
M. S. (.
Good service, food is always good and out of all the venues in city centre this is less packed. Drinks are faultless too and with great prices
K. J.
A Very nice wearherspoons public house.. food was value for money 💰 the tomato juice was also good value 👌 all in all not a bad pub to choose before the cricket..
W. W.
I like to go to the Gatekeeper in the afternoon. It's a great pub for an extended lunchtime meet up with mates. Can get a bit crowded when there is a Cardiff City or Cardiff Blues home game that evening.
Good service and excellent value as with all Weatherspoons.
S. M.
Not bad but rammed full, was a Rugby matchday at the Principality stadium over the road so you can forgive them that, the w/c's were awfull but again, inderstandably so???
J. B.
Had a nice pint of beer at a great price; was quiet when I was in there.
J. P.
Foods always lovely good value for money and atmosphere is friendly.
Can't fault the place or the staff.
It's my go to place for meal out.
C. a. P. W.
Just had a nice latte in here a good price £1.20 plus free refills
M.
Had lovely meal. Was more than we could eat. Food served until 11pm. Friendly staff and great atmosphere on a Saturday evening.
M. O.
Very busy went up stairs not so busy .the price for drinks are much cheaper than many other bars near by
m. j.
I guess each visit is a personal experience. It was rammed when I went. That's what brings the money in I guess. Beer was ok with the beer festival on.
T.
Probably the nicest spoons in Cardiff.
Quieter than Central and Prince of Wales, but still lively and has a great atmosphere.
S. L.
Went on a day when nothing was happening at the principality stadium. Excellent choice of beers and a really great pizza.
m.
Cheap and cheerful. Very noisy at times with students and other youngsters. Quieter during lunchtimes!
C. D.
Always my go to place for pre show food and drink , a nice atmosphere and pleasant staff
R. R.
Good quality food and drink. That are excellent value. Staff are friendly and happy to help. Lots of choice on the kids menu and excellent value for money.
M. R.
Popped in for a drink. Nice pub and staff. Quite busy as it was Bank Holiday Sunday
S.
Cheap drinks and excellent atmosphere. Pretty clean for a Wetherspoons too.
M. G.
Very good dinners and price
The drinks were very good
As was the service.
T. G.
lots of room for our group of 6.
Quick and friendly service at bar especially a young man called redurshar (sorry if I spelt that wrong) who was happy to help and smiley :)
J. M.
Entirely acceptable wether spoons pub. Nice big place suitable for beer before rugby. Could do with more staff early on during those periods.
D. G.
Ok coffee and the rhubarb can of pop was great the mixed grill wasn't that good they shouldn't stack the meat on top of each other on the plate, but for the price you can't complain.. super service clean can understand why it's a inner city meet up pub.
M. L.
Nice quiet place, quick service

Ordered from the app and drinks were at the table within 2 minutes, didn’t order food on this occasion but would on a return visit. Polite and friendly staff
L. L.
Only called in due to rain had a delicious hot choc one of the barmen was a little abrasive. However the other staff were fab.
J. C. “. E.
This really is a jewel of a pub.
It is clean the staff are super helpful and polite it's a real joy.
K. D.
I meet up with a friend monthly. Lovely atmosphere, only problem, there are no steaks
S. W.
Cheap Carlsberg and a wonderful large breakfast, never disappoints.
K. M.
Had a few pints and a meal enjoyed it all nice pub
B.
10/10
The lady wearing glasses working alongside the short dark haired gentleman who was informative worked really well
Lots of staff working to they’re best as usual in the Gatekeeper
D. B.
Decent weatherspoons with a fantastic atmosphere. Has two floors and alot of seating available. The seating is comfortable as well. Food is not bad and very quick in coming out and I liked the combo sharers they had going on. Drinks value is good. Good place to watch the rugby.
I. K.
A great place to meet friends for a drink. Extensive choice at the bar, good pricing, and well spaced out layout to allow social distancing. Relaxed atmosphere, quick and friendly service at the bar. Would recommend.
D. O. S.
Exactly what you expect from a Spoons - cheap, quick, efficient and tasty food served alongside decent pop. You can't go wrong really if you're in town shopping and need a pit stop. Tables sticky as ever but who cares when you can fill up for less than 40 for 4 with beer inc. I'll reserve judgement on the barman's response to my pronunciation of quinoa (I know, who orders a salad in here?) - nuff said I think. My picture is of the fair in town since it still feels wrong to snap food in here for some reason.
J. M.
New Carpet! Usual Wetherspoons fare. Beer (real ale) is usually kept better at the moment. Problem is that depends very much on the diligence of the managers. This has not been so in the past and unfortunately there's no guarantee in the future. That's why some local breweries sneak in and make sure themselves. Currently on my list for food but unless I see something I fancy in the available beer I generally go with the wine as it's more difficult to screw up!
P. D.
Its a pretty decent pub, but the pub changes when any event is on at the nearby national stadium... to obviously rammed!
Clean and pleasant.... Good value, great for breakfast.
R. J.
Exactly how you would expect a wetherspoons to be. Cheap drink and food. Good atmosphere
G. F.
Fairly quiet at 4pm. Good prompt service with food and drink. First visit.. highly impressed. One thing..food prices have risen considerably, particularly as VAT is 5% reduced from 20%. The 3 dish sharer price that was £10 for years is now £13.45 in this pub. Excessive increase in my opinion but still good value.
L. D.
Pleasantly quiet for a bank holiday sunday. Met friends and were able to have a lovely conversation without having to shout over any noise. Polite, friendly staff. A thoroughly pleasant experience all round. Highly recommend
N. H.
Very much like most Wetherspoons, cheap, cheerful but clean and friendly
D. T.
When I walked in I had a member of staff for me to scan a website to sit at a table. I was shown to use the app to order food.
I ordered a Steak medium rare and baked potato with a Morgan Spiced Rum with Coke. The steak was cooked perfection and the potato was delicious.
This not my first time. I know I will be back again soon. The staff were friendly and polite. I RECOMMEND The Gatekeeper to anyone to a chilled out atmosphere like this pub
N. R.
My favourite of the many Wetherspoons scattered across Cardiff as it's nice and central, and service is always friendly. It's a big enough space that, other than on game nights, you're fairly likely to find a spot to sit, and there always seems to be a fairly relaxed atmosphere.
M. A.
Track and Trace enforced at the door, staff are friendly, pub is clean and tidy.
Upstairs tea/coffee machine needed milk providing for it, though it was a late visit.
Service was fast and friendly.
Toilets were clean.
Great location. Quiet too.
Y. H.
Next door to our travelodge. Friendly staff. Very convenient for station as well.
C. B.
Table service made me feel super safe in an otherwise busy venue
S. S.
Lost a star for the security being abrupt (4 security on the front door?) and being escorted to our table where we were sat in the worst seat possible with plenty of other tables available.
Food was was really good and the best Wetherspoons in Cardiff, in my opinion.
Fast table service with drinks, just wish they had better glasses for drinking spirits without mixer, but cant really complain about that.
S.
My favourite Wetherspoons in Cardiff. Nothing mind blowing but nice staff, nice food and a nice quiet atmosphere. Perfect for chilled meals out
A. G.
Spoons, it's nothing special you know what your getting at a decent price.
Popped in for a breakfast and a pint, all done on the app. Perfect.
A. M.
Cheap and very good food and drinks. Great service
M. S.
So this is where you start your great night out, food and drink are great here with a well decorated and handsome pub then make your way to Cardiff's great night out or stay your choice.
T. Z.
Beers, snacks, meals were good as always. Tables could be cleaned after the customers left.
K. W.
Always a value for money experience fish and chips amazing and a few real ales to accompany 👍
E. P.
Hit and miss but it was rugby saturday. Otherwise good food and fast service. The Sunday was much more calm and breakfast was lovely
g. h.
Excellent staff taking care of your orders. Will be going again satisfaction !
S. t. D.
Good cheep drinks but lacks character. Typical weatherspoons
H. C.
Great pub, great choice of beers. Best of the JDWs in Cardiff City centre.
A. D.
Lovely food, service was quick, very nice staff .
B. R.
Lovely food we had managers special cheap drinks and not to busy
S. K.
It was game day and was packed with rugby fans but ordered food and drinks via the app and it appeared in very quick time.
M. B.
Very busy I had a pint of wru gold lovely pint ,pub was heaving with rugby fans serenading us with there Welsh rugby songs ,great voices got us ready for the principality stadium .
D. R.
Brilliant time lovely weather Sat outside really nice
S. D. (.
Mixed success with breakfast's on different days. Not always hot and things missing e.g. bacon and butter. Had to ask for the missing items but were always polite and sorted out promptly.
G. L.
Very busy on arrival but staff were smiling and helpful
N. G.
Good Spoons. Nicer than the 2 on the main strip (imho). Hazy Jane available 😊
S. P.
Nice place for a drink and a chat.......it's huge.....top floor is best
E. B.
Great customer service from the bar staff and great atmosphere, well worth the visit 👍
H. T.
Great service by luna. A great a place to have a drink. And real Ales.
M. J.
Nice breakfast. Very helpful friendly service from staff on shift
R. N.
Standard Wetherspoons but poorly staffed on a bust saturday during peak Christmas shopping. Need to employ someone to clear tables, it is not the customers job.
A. P.
Good selection of ales. Food is generally OK considering the price - great location. Coffee is a bargain. Quality of beers can be a bit variably..
P. B.
Decent for a spoons, really enjoyed the large breakfast
T. M.
Not so good this visit ordered food at the bar as app was not working well waited approx 40 minutes no food turned up made an enquiry and found out the food was taken to another table downstairs by mistake so had to wait another 15 mins for our food to be prepared again all was well in the end but generally a nice place been to many times
S. T.
The food was brill .. had great company .... had a great time ..
J. H.
Another great wetherspoons, can't fault it
J. T.
Was a good breakfast and excellent service 👌
R. T.
Close to the theatre
Go see Tina musical
A. H.
Friendly staff.... Nice building good beer
J. M.
I like it. Handy for the city centre, good staff, and relatively cheap
S. H.
Love this spoons, tucked away from the main crowd but close to castle. Lovely atmosphere and really attentive staff.
D. B.
Good size spoons. Always get a seat when I come in, shame they're not currently playing the Lions series but good value for money on the food and drink so can't complain.
A. J. -. P.
Order the food on the table and get it delivered using the app. Very much liked food selection. Ordered wrap and there service was very prompt. Very impressed. Would recommend to go there.
A. H.
So super clean and spacious.
The staff today we're very helpful and the track and trace took seconds to do.
Plus having 50% off food and drink today and tomorrow throughout August made my day too
We will be back for lunch today too A*
A. B.
Typical Wetherspoons. At busy times tables never seem to be cleared so although there is usually plenty of seating, you may struggle to find an empty table. Often see customers clearing the tables themselves
T. I.
We had a beyond meat burger...it was bloody lovely. It's a bit shabby, but the staff were friendly and the food came quickly, so we were happy.
P. C.
Great service even though it was an event day
p. a.
Great pub nice atmosphere
D. W.
A good place to eat at reasonable price in the city
A. S.
Varied menu, great selection of drinks.
C. T.
A typical weatherspoons average food at a good price, with cheap beer what more do you want. Three floors so a bit of a climb for the toilets but there is a lift, wheelchair friendly with lots of seating areas.
L. J.
It was great! It was my first time eating here. I had fish, chips and mushy peas and I really enjoyed it. Chips are really nice and the fish was not oily and limp but dry and fresh looking and tasting. Will definitely go back here :-)
K.
Standard Wetherspoons so reasonably good.
L. G.
Nice watering hole with decent and reasonably priced food, my only criticism is a lack of bar staff can take a while to serve you.
D. H.
Cracking range of real ale at great prices.
S. C.
Great atmosphere on Saturday night, music, cocktails and staff were great. Just one down side, one of the security men was very rude and grumpy for no apparent reason. All the others were lovely. Shame but its still a great place to be! Outstanding staff food exceptional and very good value for money see you next week
P. R.
Pleasant enough experience but bar area is crowded and not easily accessible which is poor
K. G.
Very busy. Even so still enjoyed our visit and food. Managed to get a table within 15 minutes even though it was busy. Being in a wheelchair sometimes helps as people do their best to be helpful. And even though my order was wrong the manager sorted it out and a fresh meal was brought as quickly as possible. Well worth a visit but on busy times be prepared to wait for a table.
o. g.
Nice pub. Good atmosphere
L. B.
Lovely steak. So glad they are doing steak as 3 other Wetherspoons that I used recently did not have it on the menu so I no longer use them (Ivor Davies Prince of Wales and Great Western). The staff were very efficient and friendly unlike a staff member in the Prince of Wales who was very rude on a previous visit.
B. B.
Good food and fast service
A.
Quick service, hot food and friendly staff
E. B.
Love the app just sit down and wait for order to be delivered to the table. I would have given 5 stars however our breakfast this morning was not as listed on the menu, small breakfast was missing a sausage and bacon butty had 3 not 4 slices of bacon. I did let staff know as someone who has more of an appetite than us may have been upset or rude due to this. Otherwise the bar and restaurant is clean and tidy, staff are friendly and helpful. It could do with 2 self help areas for tea and coffee on the lower floor as it is a bit of a walk if you are on the raised platform at the back and you forgot something. Would recommend.
G. T.
Had a few drinks what out shopping in Cardiff .Lovely Wetherspoons
M. O.
This place is your typical weatherspoons. Cheap and cheerful and plenty of choice for both food and drinks. I love the variety of gins you can get. Plenty of seating upstairs and down. Only downside is the outdoor seating area has been reduced.
S. C.
A great spoons however had a bit of an issue with a pitcher that tasted bad, and they refunded me slightly less because it was part of the 2 for 12 deal. I was only refunded £5.30, so paid more for the other pitcher, which was perfect. They also said they would bring a replacement over, but never did so went to the bar for a refund, which is where the above happened.
C. B.
Food came quickly but asked twice for cutlery to two different waitresses and neither brought any, very poor service should of come with the food without asking in the first place
C. P.
Went for lunch here on a coach trip to Cardiff. It is very near Cardiff Castle. Good value as are all Wetherspoons pubs. Ground and First Floor large seating areas with a bar on each floor. There is a lift to the First Floor. The meal we had was nicely cooked and tasty.
G. K.
Nice pub, handy for the rugby stadium.
k. s.
One of the better wetherspoons I've been to
M. G.
Nice place, fairly clean and extremely busy on a rugby night so a good atmosphere. Loses a star because we were unable to order drinks to be sent to the table on the Wetherspoons app and we were asked for ID over 6 times in under 2 hours. I get they need to be thorough but it gets excessive
J. D.
This is a Wetherspoons so standard should be pretty good. We ordered food at the bar and it arrived at our table really quickly despite the fact it was a Friday and really busy. The app seemed to work well too. Saves you losing your table by having to go to the bar!
T. I.
We had a beyond meat burger...it was bloody lovely. It's a bit shabby, but the staff were friendly and the food came quickly, so we were happy.

A fairly typical large 'Spoons with plenty of seating and great staff.

Visit this place evertime I'm in Cardiff never been disappointed yet friendly staff
R. C.
Curry for me great wife 5 bean jacket potato cheese
N. R.
My favourite of the many Wetherspoons scattered across Cardiff as it's nice and central, and service is always friendly. It's a big enough space that, other than on game nights, you're fairly likely to find a spot to sit, and there always seems to be a fairly relaxed atmosphere.
T. I.
Food is wholesome & delicious. Staff are helpful & courteous. Fine selection of both alcoholic & soft beverages.
D. G.
Disabled toilet lock does not secure the door, handle falls down. Also water covering floor so very dangerous. Strong smell of urine. Food lovely and staff pleasant. I had my own key for the toilet so didnt report it as you have to ask for a key to use it, if you haven't got your own
c. e.
Usual Witherspoon's pub, good value, good staff, OK food.
A. A.
It's a spoons...they're all pretty consistent. Lots of security onbwhen we were there but all very friendly and chatty, limited staff interaction during these times but all seemed OK.
D. U.
When I was there, the kitchen was being refurbished so there was no food and also there was hardly any real ales, but the staffseemed really apologetic
C. M.
A,lovely pub and great food
D. A.
Lovely ale selection and a good offering of food. Lovely friendly staff.
A. C.
It was a bit faffy to be honest.there are no menus you have to order from the app and everything I seemed to want was unavailabile - just the basic fish and chips or ham egg and chips , nothing fancy.it would have been easier to have boards up saying what was available, there's very limited availability.saying that the staff were very friendly and helpful .
K. W.
Large pub on 3 floors. Very busy on Saturday afternoon, even though no events on in local stadiums. Took a while to locate table, but considering how busy it was, service was v good, tables reasonably clean and food was good.
B. F.
First class food was very good. Place a bit cold or I would have stayed a bit longer Weatherspoons never disappoint , I always eat there,in Falmouth,Preston or Manchester. All good. My favourite one is Punchbowl in York
J. P.
Typical Weatherspoons pub. Good food, reasonably priced and plenty of choice. Drinks sensibly priced. Very reassuring to have security people on Friday nights. Felt safe. Close to town centre facilities.
P. W.
It's a typical Weather spoons and a place where I meet with a large group of friends for a few beers and lunch. While it is not in the buisy centre of Cardiff it is only about 100m away, it is large, open and has two floors. Service and choice of drinks is good and the food is typical of several Weatherspoons pubs.
In the evenings and especially on match days is can get quite crowded but the atmosphere is good and as I said there is lots of space.
For an intimate dinner, maybe not, with a group of friends definitely recommend.
K. R.
Food served warm the app is fab 😊😊
J. W.
The service was as good as you could expect whilst under covid restrictions. Reasonable prices and very good food.
C. C.
It's a Wetherspoons, so you know what you're going to get. Cheap and cheerful. Clean and in good order. Plenty of room to meet up with friends. I'm a big fan of the app, which lets you order food and drinks from your table, saving you the trouble of fighting the crush at the bar.
E. H.
Great value, good food, pleasure to be here. Will be back.
M. B.
staff lovely food great
s. d.
An awesome freezing pint of guinness to be fair. Enjoyed just before the rugby across the street.
J. J.
The Gatekeeper is a really good meeting place to meet friends & family . If you're just popping in for a drink & a catch up with friends . Or even getting the family together and having a nice meal . Its the place to be. The atmosphere is always a good one. Theres Plenty of drinks to choose from anything from a coke to a pint MAGNERS, or pint of ale to a whisky or even a bottle of champagne. What ever your tipple they got it . And the food is very good too. On my visit yesterday I had a Beef and ale pie with chips n peas. With a little jug of gravy. Then to wash it down I also had a MAGNERS cider, with ice. I really enjoyed it too . I have a thing about food needs to be hot enough and this definitely was. It was so nice . thanks guys .... Jay
R. H.
Very spacious. Gets very busy on game days. But you get a great atmosphere overall and cheap drinks. As usual with Wetherspoons you have to hike to use the restrooms 😅
P. H.
Easily the cleanest & best Wetherspoon in Cardiff (not eaten in this one yet though.
C. M.
Short staffed so had to wait a while to get in which wasnt a problem ..all staff friendly food great. Adhered to all Covid regs.
M. h.
Great pub lovely welcome and very cheap
M. B.
Been here many times over the years, it's consistent. It can get very busy but quietens as people move on to other pubs and clubs later in the evening. Well staffed, clean. Right next to the various spots of Womanby Street. Can't go wrong
A. W.
Went on match day, Wales playing Italy and there was no space but got served really quickly with a great crowd inside having a good time. We couldn't take our drinks (in plastic pots) outside which i dont really get?
S. R.
Always great value for money.
S. P.
Nice City Centre Wetherspoons which is clean with friendly staff and not as rough as Prince of Wales which is just around the corner
T. L.
Everything you would expect from a Wetherspoons pub.
A. S.
Good food, beer reasonably priced and friendly staff. City centre location.
N.
Loves a 'spoons and this one is a goodun. Always clean. Plenty of seating and very handily situated near the stadium and womanby street. Food is amazing. Only issue is the outrageous price hikes on match days. Blatantly fleecing their own customer base just because they can.
J. D.
Great spoons and very fast service
J. G.
This place is bit worn now but you can't fault it for value for money, and the food is also good, and reasonable
R. M.
Breakfast is getting expensive
Large breakfast and tea £7
T. C.
Was okay been to better spoons.
D. N.
This is a very spacious 'spoons with a lift to all floors. It's also the first one I've seen with a separate menu for veggie and vegan options, great idea if you can never find the little v or ve next to a meal. Attentive staff and very clean the two visits I made.
M. K.
Doesn't appear to have changed since i can remember! No bad thing though but would be nice if it was updated... Especially the crazy bright lights. However, its good value, loads of seats and a good selection of drinks
m. b.
Track and trace via the app, sat down, food and drink brought to our table via the app.
Cost effective and good quality with a decent service.
M. L.
It's a spoons. Service is random. Drink adequate but cheap. You get what you pay for
G. H.
A great meeting place for get togethers with friends. Normally come here maybe twice a month the last few years, mainly on a Tuesday evening to meet with a social group. Always a calm atmosphere and busy.
P. C.
Not too shabby. The weather outside was quite horrible so I stepped in for a quick coffee and a light breakfast. A little bit more expensive than my normal NW London haunt which seems strange as this is in Cardiff which is hardly exclusive, but I guess they consider this a premium site because it's right opposite the Welshland Rugby Arena. Its nothing special in any way shape or form. Usual early morning hard core drinkers and all day boozers. The disabled toilet alarm was going off all the time as the largely able-bodied, but lazy, slobs used it rather than walk upstairs to the regular toilets. As with a great many Wetterpants pubs the design of the toilets is magnificent.
J. C.
Reasonable beer and food, but service at the bar can be ridiculously disorganised and slow. Particularly when busy. There seems to be a tendency to understaff the bar and only serve at one end. Drinks and food are reasonably priced, but you expect that at Weatherspoons.
G. G.
As far as a budget meal is concerned it one of the best places in town. Disabled access, lifts and toilets make it a place of choice. It would have got 5 stars if it wasnt for the stupid self service coffee system. They have no de-cafe options anymore. Very disappointing.
J. D.
Had Sunday lunch today but not up to usual standards. Roast spuds let it down. BUT I will go there and give it a second chance. Service is good and the beer is okay.
L. P.
would definitely recommend this place. it’s super busy as there is a concert and football on yet the staff still come over and make sure we are enjoying our food, quick service although packed full. lovely staff
C. S. (.
Oh boy here I go reviewing again...Hold my beer!
Upon entering this fine establishment you will notice the standard spoons decor as if the designers were huge fans of copy/paste for all spoons everywhere. However that is the only similarity to other spoons.
My visit not only consisted of the usual reasonably priced (cheap AF) drinks but I also got to hear a gentleman's choir sing a few songs... (Okay so it may have been about 10 drunken elderly men on a match day but was still cool and added to the friendly atmosphere)
The place is kept clean and the staff are always happy to help... And they have Kopparberg on tap now so there's that plus too...
So if you want to come somewhere for a few post work Swifty's, some pregame sesh or a cheap meal then this is right up your alley.
S. S.
Beer wasn't the best 7/10 but fair play to the barman (Sean ohonlon) looked for and got us the right glass for us even though we were happy without the right glass. Fair play to the lad he insisted trying to meet our needs.
D. E.
Absolutely outstanding staff 1st rate 🙂 myself and my wife enjoyed it! Clean and Covid Responsible. 10/10
M. W.
City centre spoons, don't expect too much and you will do fine, some great ales on tap
M. I.
Nice, slightly quieter Wetherspoons had the starter tapas selection, couldn't fault it.
J. S.
Ordered at 15.10 waited 30 mins then asked one of the staff, i know youre busy but its been a long time. She said were busy i said ok i understand. The table in front of me had changed persons a couple of times and i saw the new ones being served. So i asked another member of staff i said i know youre busy but they came 15 mins after i ordered and they have food.
My meal came within 5 minutes.
The waiting has to be a management problem. It should be quicker, or the kitchen needs more ovens
A. E. M.
My husband and I had a huge breakfast there to keep us going while visiting Cardiff. We like Wetherspoon for breakfast choices and coffee. The food tasted delicious, personell was excellent. I recommend.
i. c.
The only thing that lets this place down, there was no lock on the disabled toilet on the ground floor and by the state of the door it's been like that a while. Other than that staff very friendly. Food was hot and tasty.

Perfect restaurant if you are in a budget and are looking for good food and cheap drinks. Went on a curry thursday with no expectations, and ended up really surprised with the quality of the plates. Tried the Chicken Tikka Massala and Beef Madras, both lived up to a proper Indian restaurant standard. Innovative method of ordering through an app. Cheap drinks and good atmosphere, recommended especially for college students.
m. B.
Nice place busy but managed to get a seat and was quick at the bar
N. “. S.
Standard spoons food so nothing to complain about there. Fantasic selection of local drinks and the layout its self is very nice. Great for a meal with the fam or a sesh with the crew!
C. S.
Great pub great prices
A. D.
Decent spoons serving the usual offering. I use the app these days so sit back and relax as good and drink are delivered direct to my table and a receipt in my inbox.
V. H.
This is my favourite spoons in Cardiff, it's close to the principality/millennium stadium and attracts a better standard of clientele. It has a bar upstairs which makes it quicker to get served on busy match or concert days. It's very close to Cardiff Castle and just a short walk to the train station.
D. H.
It got that weather spoon carpet but it do be kinda cheap doe
R. C.
Great place normally, food and staff accommodating, but unfortunately today they only have 2 Copa gin glasses upstairs. Also, they're out of the advertised gin of the week special.
L. A.
A fairly typical large 'Spoons with plenty of seating and great staff.
R. O.
I like the layout of this spoons a lot, service was very slow when I visited at 1pm on a Saturday, reasonably understandable however.
M. J.
Great service always fast even when very busy. Food hot and tasty with menus that contain calorie counts for those on a health regime. For even faster service and convenience use the whetherspoons app.
b. m.
Good service, staff very helpful, efficient.
Bar area and tables clean.
R. A.
Good beers, nice atmosphere and plenty of space.
A. H.
Went Saturday at 5.15 it was obvious there wasn't enough staff, like most people cleared our table ourselves !! Long wait at bar and then warm food given to us!!! Felt sorry for the staff working, not something we would do again .
T. M.
Busy, more of an eating place than a pub, plenty of tables and very reasonable priced ale, plastic glasses when there's a sporting event which isn't ideal.
C. M.
Liked this place very much, must be new, immaculate. Staff friendly and helpful, only thing that disappointed me was I hoped they would sell Brains beer, told they don't, Doombar it was but 30p more per pint than in Devon??
J. M.
Another weatherspoons nothing different to any other other than the steak and kidney was Welsh steak. The food all looks the same tastes the same good food, cheap price and in old looking pub what more can you want.
G. H.
You can't beat a Wetherspoons. Good pint great food friendly staff. A bit of a wait for the food but they informed me of this when I went to order it. Definitely recommend it
S. F.
Another great spoons, lots of space, so easy to find a quiet corner 👌
A. R.
Been a regular visitor here for some time, i.e., every three months or so.
The service has always been excellent. The food is great value for money.
Location cannot be better!
I would recommend to anyone on a budget.
K. 2.
I always enjoy going here for drinks with friends, the prices are inexpensive and the food is always good quality.
For a recent visit I had a fish lunch which was the manager's special deal and it was the best cod I've had for a while.
I. R.
Food and sevice up to Wetherspoons standard. Gent's toilet needs attention. 2 x cubical no toilet paper as no toilet paper dispenser. At least 4 toilet pans stained brown nothing that bleach and brush can't cure. Rest of toilet including urinals clean but whole toilet area could do with a redecoration. Not up to normal standards of other 'Spoons sorry to say.
D. G.
A busy central Weatherspoon chain pub near Cardiff Castle. It is situated neat the music quarter of Womamby Street, and the Principality Stadium. The pub has out door seating available. Inside is split over two floors. It is usually very busy.
J. W.
Great place to go to for lunch. Not very expensive at all. Got the BBQ burger and it was halfway decent! Came here with friends for a quite bit and it served us well.
C. W.
It's a Wetherspoons what else can I say. Disappointing range of ales though
H. E.
Good feeling about the whole place.
P. E.
Food and drink service isn't the best, takes a while to arrive. Twice ours arrived without drinks.
M. P.
Good location and thanks for finding my passport that I dropped whilst eating lunch.
A. D.
Classic spoons, nothing great but nothing exceptionally bad about it.
Staff very helpful and polite and the food was just classic spoons grub.
Great food for the price you pay.
G.
Typical Wetherspoons pub - you know what you're getting. Use the Wetherspoons app during busy times though as the service at the bar can be slow as Wetherspoons typically don't have enough staff behind the bar!
R. A.
A massive weatherspoons with great offers
A. L.
Good service, great beer & reasonable price..
T. C.
Nice food but a little stingy with the chips. Wasn't able to order food via the Wetherspoons app as we were sat outside and out table wasn't available to order from. Other than that, was a pleasant visit
A. A.
Just like most wetherspoons. Situated near the Principality Stadium so pretty easy to get to during a match day of needed but expect it to be busy fairly regularly.
B. S.
Unfortunately very noisy and really does need a review of their lighting scheme - there are dim patches. On a happier note, the beer as always was really good.
S. B.
A J.D. Weatherspoons Pub. As always friendly knowledgeable staff with drinks and food at bargain prices.
This one is very handy for the town shoppers, tourists and people using the Principality Stadium (just over the road). One of my favourites in the city.
R. E.
Amazing atmosphere, great food and the cheapest drinks I've had in Cardiff for a while! Highly recommended
s. c.
One of Wetherspoons finest. Great food. Good selection of drinks. Plenty of seating and pretty quiet atmosphere most days making it a great place to catch up with friends.
M. B.
It's a Weatherspoon's, low cost beer and decent predictable food. Not usually packed with students so quiet compared to the Cardiff pubs near to the university.
K. S.
Cheap and cheerful. Friendly daytime atmosphere
C. R.
Nice place, atmosphere good even though restrictions still in place. Staff were excellent
C. F.
Friday night and they are doing a roaring trade. On my own so ordering using the app has saved queuing. The food came very quickly, friendly service.
M. C.
The breakfast was not as cold as some spoons, the serving girl tried to give my meal to some people on another table. Apart from that the addition of black pudding was inspired
A. M.
Good value, and has a bar upstairs as well so you don't spill your drinks going between floors. Right opposite the Principality Stadium so gets very crowded on match days.
F. D.
Great! Very fast service for a spoons, however we were lied to about closing time and were kicked out with drinks to spare
E. D.
As usual for a Wetherspoons, good value pub with a varied food menu, tends to be a quiet pub during the day, more busy on weekends, events & nights, close to the live music quarter of Womanby Street..
S. A.
I really like it, it's a family place and foods is cheap. Also there is lots of sitting area. I just think the tables and chairs are so old.
N. V. D. M.
Good location and great variety of drinks at decent prices. We did have to clear a table ourselves as the restaurant was very busy, but overall it was a good experience.
K. L.
This is a good place for a cheap and cheerful lunch the food is always good and the service prompt they have different menus everyday it was Friday so we had cod and jacket potato and a pink gin with slimline tonic all for under £9 excellent value
H. D.
Had a chocolate fudge cake with my vodka cranberry. Was peckish and the lads didn't let me have dessert on Bar 44 so had to make do. Cake was warmed up and came with ice cream although I would have preferred normal cream. May have been an option for this but thought I was already pushing my luck asking my mate to buy me cake on his round. Anyway it's a spoons. Same as most.
N.
Typical Wetherspoon pub situated in the centre of Cardiff, just a few minutes from the stadium. Its a lot quieter and nicer than the other Wetherspoons dotted around Cardiff City Centre. Had a pleasant experience here
J. R.
Nice chilled placed to eat and drink
M.
Nice place situated on three floors, lots of space for everyone. Good availability and prices
S. W.
A generic Wetherspoons convenient for c ardiff city centre, probably a better option than the Prince of Wales. Large downstairs bar and additional upstairs eating area. Also has full lift for easy access.
T. T.
Great food for a decent price. Meals were ready in about 10 minutes and thanks to Wetherspoon mobile app we didn't have to queue up by the bar to order!
V. H.
They have a lift, which if like me you have mobility issues is great. Lovely food at reasonable prices, it's a great place to meet and catch up with friends/family
a. m.
Great atmosphere as always but a very very hot pub in the summer, very little if any air con. Prices are the usual weatherspoons cheap and cheerful.
H. D.
Cardiff has a few Wetherspoons. The Gatekeeper is probably the best of them in Cardiff. It's large without being too noisy. It gets busy but you can still get served. But essentially it's a 'spoons and you know what you're getting.
M.
Great food but not enough choice for vegetarians. Tables need to be cleaned more often and a few could use replacing. Friendly staff as well.
E. 7.
Wetherspoons - you know what you're getting and it's not too expensive. We went on a Friday when there was rugby on so busier than expected but food still fine.
J. M.
Amazing place! Very clean and quick service even when very busy. Was convenient for my friends and me as it is located approximately 300 yards for the Principality Stadium.
L. H.
The unlimited coffee for £1.50 was ok. It comes from a machine in the corner. The atmosphere was ok but the toilets could have done with a sweep.
H. B.
I love the great location of this Wetherspoons, right in the heart of Cardiff City Center, just accross the road from from The Principality Stadium, with entrances on Westgate Street, & the cultural hub of colourful Wanamby Street, only a few steps away from the popular City Arms.
Wetherspoon pubs are known as being cheap & cheerful, & this establishment surpassed my expectations.
I had a mouth watering burger with giant sized tasty onion rings.
Another bonus of Wetherspoons is their free coffee refills.
The only downside to these pubs is the layout. The toilets are always either upstairs or downstairs, with a long walk involved, which can also often be confusing, & difficult to access for many people.
D. F.
Nice pub. Food wasn't perfect but we were as a group and booked for the day after but the staff did sort a table of 20 whatever out for us xx
S. T.
Food was great, reason for the 3 was when I informed member of staff that I had a hole in my cocktail jug he had no interest and said to take it to the bar even though there was drink coming out of the whole ..... bar staff where good and soon got onto replacing but feel the other guy should have helped
D. R.
Great food, super prices. Always really busy but now you can order drinks and food with your phone, it's not a problem.
P. P.
Out of all the spoons IV been to and IV been to a lot , one member of staff here was so rude , I had to see the manager, and well done to him he sorted out my breakfast, reason for 3 stars was the one member of staff she should not be working with people in my opinion.
T. L.
A wetherspoons pub situated just near the entrance to the Principality Stadium and Westgate NCP carpark. Has all the usual Wetherspoons deals on foods and drinks. There are quite a few Wetherspoons in Cardiff but this is out preferred choice. We have had breakfast and main meals in here and all good is great. Can get busy though at times. There are big screen tv's all around. There is a lift to get to the toilets as they are upstairs. In the evening the doors near the Principality Stadium are locked and you have to use the doors around the back near to the rock pub. It can be slightly intimidating at night especially if a weekend.
A. G.
Its actually one of the best Wetherspoon I've had ever been ... massive space to sit, always crowded and good selection and price of beers, as usual
A. E. (.
Great place for food and drink, always enjoy a works night out here or when I fancy a quick bite with the misses. Cheap, clean and cheerful just the way I like it
J. B.
My favourite whether spoons in Cardiff. It doesn't really have the crazy crowd that the prince of Wales has because it's hidden away. Plus they seem to have better ales.
M. L.
Very good pub it's busy at the weekend. It has two bars.
J. M.
I like it, great pub, great staff, but to be avoided on a match day unless you are there early or late. Cardiff centre is all plastic glasses then.
S. M.
Good range of beers, lively pub staff a little disinterested. If you want cheap beer and aren't too worried about who serves it this is your kinda place!
M. H.
Large but no music
L. M.
A basic and rather chilly pub but it was extremely cold outside. However very fast service which was appreciated and good value food.
A. H.
Little bit let down by the wait time as there were 3 staff cleaning, typical spoons quality drinks and prices though👍
S. L.
Ok but not overimpressed
M.
Very friendly bar and very good service. Had a very good time there.
J.
Food was good, atmosphere was good, not too noisy, although was very busy, lucky to find a seat.
Food came relatively fast!
M. W.
Good atmosphere when we were here for the Joshua fight. Don't know why prices were raised for the drinks though? (unless that is common practice on event days).
M. J.
Good place to stop for food on your return to Wales from Longleat Safari park. Great food and staff. I highly recommend their burger.
D. M.
Lovely pub and staff
M. L.
This is a brilliant place for meeting up with friends and family and for food especially before going to the big match's they have going on in Cardiff city centre plus they have wheel chair access to.
G. H.
Great afternoon for the rugby.
E. B.
Great pub , good prices food and drink ... wonderful young man working there called Hayden nothing was to much trouble .
B. H.
Disappointing visit. No cod, no garden peas and no Stella Artois. Beef and Ale pie broken. Not it's usual standard. Attentive table service.
M. f.
Visit this place evertime I'm in Cardiff never been disappointed yet friendly staff
S. L.
It's a Wetherspoons - does what it says on the tin! Cheap and cheerful. We were very glad of it in the heavy snow - only place open!!! Mind you ... the heating wasn't working 😉
S. C.
Went in for breakfast nice price for nice food. Good clean breakfast only quibble is that the breakfast was cold, but do like the refills of coffee and tea.
T. M.
Food excellent very lively
D. J.
Excellent service. Managed to invent a new drink that I would recommend called the "Traffic Light". An apple sourz, under a fireball, under a cherry sourz!
J. B.
Very light and pleasant pub one of wetherspoons one of the nicer ones we have been in very large place with plenty of room upstairs and down pleasant staff and good atmosphere
R. M.
Beer was cheap, service reasonable and certainly quick. It still has that Wetherspoons gloom though. I can't put my finger on it... In any case, not bad.
J. H.
We have visited this pub before and think it has a good atmosphere. The food is not great but acceptable for the price and value for money.
D. S.
Great bar, typical weatherspoon. Although it is a very busy pub it is very large so always somewhere for your group to sit
J. S.
All doors open giving a through draught. Always good choice of beers and (pricey) ciders.
P. G.
It's a consistently average JDW pub, although it's finger is more on the pulse than most due to the location opposite the stadium and backing on to Womanby St - the live music capital of Cardiff.
Whilst here, we did witness a moron harassing customers out the back of the pub, who eventually moved on when staff spoke with him for the 3rd time.
D. C.
Same as all wetherspoons but very close th e principality stadium or (arms park) if look at photos which ale would you go for? I went for both happy days.
N. C.
A little slow at the bar buy it was busy - although once ordered the food arrived promptly...
Nice atmosphere
M. W.
Was ok service was average which was disappointing as it was pretty quiet, staff seemed more interested in talking to each other rather than serving on the bar
D. U.
Steak was a bit tough but other than that it's was decent. Good value for money and a typical Wetherspoons meal.
G. R.
The food here is good and value for money, but the beer is awful as one would expect from a Weatherspoons pub! A good place if you are not fond of beer!
M. P.
Not enough staff serving on the bar, for a busy Friday evening. Food was usual Spoons standard - satisfying, with no thrills.
A. L. D.
There were no gates or keepers. I asked for a drink and then the bar staff provided it. I hear that's normal service in puclic House scenario's. I paid for it and then consumed it. Protocol followed
C. R.
Very busy on match day, but food and drink good and great value as always with a Wetherspoons. Could do with more staff to serve and especially clear/clean tables.
C. R.
Great beer selection and good prices.
R. T.
Lovely food print service staff with a sense of humour huge plus point only downside was the lack of lemonade but staff offered every alternative available to compensate excellent 😘
M.
Nice pub, for quick bit of lunch
A. K.
Nice staff. My husband and I have had steak meal it was very good. We will be going again soon
O. D.
Plenty of staff serving, good selection of drinks, sport on tv at all angles - a treck to the loos but well positioned hostelry
g. s.
Lovely pint but the food was poor and the bar staff don’t even go there the pretend they havnt seen you one word muppets
A. A.
Food is always good and quick considering how busy this place gets, Just bring ID even if your having just food, was refused entry for lack of ID with the girlfriend even tho wasn’t drinking
A. C.
Normal wetherspoons pub. Cheap drinks and food..Busy downstairs but nice quieter area upstairs. Handy for the stadium as on the main road adjacent to gates.
L. D.
Good Pint. Food has gone downhill. Used to love this place, but, staff serve others first, like I'm invisible.
T. R.
Great bar for the town centre, cheap, good quality drinks and food. Big enough for a crowd of you 😃
d. p.
Place is fairly priced. You can download the Wetherspoons app and order at your table, always busy but always fast with service and friendly.
c. h.
Went for food with two friends what i first ordered wasnt in stock so oredered another meal it was dry and lukewarm couldnt be bothered to complain as there was only 2 members of staff that i could see wont be in a hurry to go back.
J. M.
Great for watching the football. Heaving with people but still felt spacious. Excellent location for rugby ground and holiday inn.
S. P.
Excellent Wetherspoons and ideal for the Rugby Stadium
J. E.
Called in for dinner, had the mixed grill was very enjoyable, nice atmosphere, good service friendly staff all you would expect from a Wetherspoons.
C. B.
Good hot food. Very friendly service.
K. W.
Just poped in for a beer during the week a bit quite at the time.
It was very relaxed inside staff were quick to serve, all good really.
A. Q.
Normally a good old Weatherspoons. On this occasion very few beers to buy. We had one later and left. Should be more organised spoons!
B.
Drinks were good, ordered a steak medium but when it arrived it was all done and very grissly. Would not recommend steak there
M. S.
Everything a Spoons pub should be, it's cheap and has a great variety of drinks and food. Can be a bit of a wait at the bar during busy times.
B. P.
Beautiful pub, ordering system seems to be malfunctioning
A. R.
Great meal deals
R. C.
Curry for me great wife 5 bean jacket potato cheese
S. V.
Lovely bevs, great prices
J. A.
Reasonable priced drinks but the food isn't the best. Not many people serving ( as I believe all whetherspoons) behind the bar so can lead to a wait for service
A. F.
Good service 👍very polite. 20 times better than the dump in Penarth.
j. a.
Nice atmosphere quite full too mostly rugby fans.Curry night cannot fault it £6.75 with a drink too.Quick service considering how busy.
R. A.
Friendly atmosphere, wheelchair accessible, they also have a lift, seems to be quiet on the second floor it's mainly a seating area, you can smoke outside.
S. R.
Hectic but PINK was in Cardiff. Excellent service using their app. Lovely pizza and pint offer👍
S. M.
App table service is a great idea when the pub is busy. Food was nice enough wish there was more seating!
P. L.
A friendly and welcoming pub in the centre of Cardiff with an excellent choice of inexpensive beers, lagers, cider, wine & spirits and quality food too!
P. K.
It's a Spoons nothing more to say!
S. P.
Good value City center pub part of a large chain challenging other pubs no fills disable access from front lift to toilets upstairs good meeting place great breakfast
