Reviews of The Great Western - JD Wetherspoon
Popped in here for a brunch. Service at the bar was very quick and Jan was amazing! Outstanding customer service and had a good laugh. Drinks were fine and food is what you can expect from a whetherspoons. Would definitely be back. The pub is actually really big and split across different floors. Also so handy being next to the station!
We had a great meal sat afternoon. Great price drinks. But sunday morning my traditional breakfast.was cold. Came.with no egg. They forgot. No apology.
It needs a.good.clean in there. Asked for a.cloth so i could clean my table as it was dirty and sticky.
No toilet paper.in toilets..it just.needs a.good.clean in there
Great place for cheap food and alcoholic or non alcoholic drinks. Always start our night out in Cardiff here, bar staff were lovely and friendly to
Great location as near the train station and right at the entrance to the centre. Really cheap prices with a large selection of food and drinks in house. Service was really quick as during lunch hour and very quiet, but this place does get very busy at night and weekends.
Typical wetherspoons at the heart of city centre. Used app to order, service was good and prices very reasonable. Table was wet and unclean but nothing some beer mats and a wipe down wouldn't have sorted. Would recommend.
First time in this weather spoon's, and we were not disappointed. The staff that served us were pleasant, and friendly, and efficient. Next time I'm in Cardiff I will frequent this establishment again.
My wife and I have always had a nice breakfast here.but the one we had on the Sunday morning was shocking. Slapped on the plate.the beans were cold.they forgot my egg.the bacon was shocking to.it was very disappointing. The Saturday we had the burger in a bun and it waz the best burger we've had with onion rings on the side.obviously a different chef was on.
Its always good place to go when two aren't agreed on what to eat
Nice pub. Food was great.
Enjoyed being able to eat out again after so many lockdowns.
Great price on beer and massive selection, staff were friendly, building and decor need a make over or at least a deep clean, but hey it's a weatherspoons so nothing new there
Typical city centre JD Wetherspoon pub. Tends to get busy with drinkers on weekends, so not so family friendly. There is an upstairs area that tends to be a bit quieter.
Nothing stands out as far as wetherspoons go but the food is nice and decent size, drinks come to the table fairly quick when using the app but pretty slow if you go to the bar, seems like the pretty girls get served first. It's wetherspoons, cheap drinks and decent atmosphere, I'm happy with that.
We called in for a quick drink before going to our office Christmas party. It was super busy with everyone in the festive mood. It was a little disconcerting that no one was asked to show their Covid pass on the door but we went in regardless. We enjoyed the time we spent there though as the atmosphere was buzzing. Would certainly go there again.
Excellent Wetherspoon pub. Great place to meet for a superb breakfast before a day on the 🍺.
1st class staff need a mention too. Thank you 👏
Pretty standard spoons, fast table service even on the busiest of days. Comfortable seating and a decent atmosphere.
I popped in here for breakfast enjoying scrambled eggs on brown toast with orange juice for £3.25
Later on, I revisited the pub for one drink, but it was rather too busy.
All in all a good bar close to the railway station
Packed with Welsh and Scots fans pre match with a terrific atmosphere. It's a big pub, very well organised and lots of helpful staff.
Fantastic value for money. Very helpful and efficient staff. Food excellent. Highly recommended.
Stopped for breakfast before catching a train from nearby Central Station. Great value and service
Just a good pub, we use it as our starting point when we have a night out in Cardiff. Both the food and drink are well priced and there are always offers on.
There is also an app you can use to order your drinks, a good idea as it can be crowded around the bar.
It’s location near Cardiff central train station is perfect as a meeting point. So to sum up good food and drink well priced what’s not good about that.👍👍👍
Quite a nice interior, especially on the second floor. Right next to the train station so easy to get home quickly afterwards
Very good atmosphere. Wales were playing France in the Six Nations. Nice pint too👍
Great Spoon's in a great location just by central station.
Excellent service, great food and drink.
Exactly what you'd expect from a Wetherspoons. Good service, decent food for the price.
Good food friendly staff. Unfortunately we were sat by the door nearest the station and it was really cold as people came in and out. Will try and get there earlier next time and sit inside where it would be warmer 😊
Unusual for a Wetherspoons pub, lovely building though. Had a quick meal before my train was due and it was very nice.
Good spoons! Busy but good location and a range of cosy areas to sit.
Typical wetherspoons staff pleasant and helpful, the table we used a wipe over as soon as i asked it was done. As soon as meals finished plates were cleared and table wiped.
Good prices as usual with Wetherspoons, needs some TLC on the ground floor.
Great location and food
Usual Spoons. Had breakfast here. Eggs Benedict, the eggs were hard & cold. No hazy Jane either 😞
Typical Wetherspoons. Big clean and plenty of choice of beers at great prices.
Only issue is that when it gets busy you can sometimes wait a while to get a pint ordered on the app. Otherwise spoons nothing more to say.
Usual spoonies good cheap breakfast bit early for a beer so went for the bottomless coffee friendly staff well cooked
Had lunch with cocktails here and breakfast the next day. Great price on all drinks and food.
Good wetherspoons has a nice feel inside and the staff are friendly good is good and drinks are reasonably cheap handy to Cardiff central train station
First time going there, busy pub, great food great service
Massive, noisy city pub. Good atmosphere. Lots of choice of beers.
Excellent food service and well drilled for a 6 nations game. Highly recommended.
Typical Wetherspoons. Pleasant surroundings, quick service, passable food and lots of different beers. I'm an enthusiastic convert to pub apps to order drinks and food.. I always hated standing at bars waiting to catch the bar-person's attention. Cheers 🍻🍺
A nice spoons close to Cardiff Central Station. Good to see they are following the Covid protocols strictly. Staff were a little abrupt on entry but were friendly and quick when delivering drinks throughout the evening. Not loads of atmosphere in the pub, but pretty standard in terms of what you'd expect from spoons. Toilets nice and clean.
In my view the best in Cardiff Town staff are always polite food is great
The only problem I really have is it's difficult to access the seating downstairs with a wheelchair. Also, if they were able to label a few tables for disabled access only, that would be amazing because it seems very difficult to find a seat that someone with a wheelchair could sit at. Theres typically plenty of the tall tables and seats but very few disabled friendly seats especially seen as most people aim to sit in those normal seats rather than the tall table seats.
Polite staff, cheap prices on drinks, quiet pub, great.
Busy spot but well organised, nice food
Lovely weather spoons, friendly and helpful staff, place is close to the station, so very convenient. Enjoyed a lovely pint of Brains ale, the beer was well maintained and tasted wonderful would recommend this pub to anyone.
Great place, tasty food, great table service using the app
Friendly and pleasant staff and typical of a Wetherspoon's pub. Great prices, good choice of ales and food available. Excellent location if you're traveling by train!
It's OKish.. out of choice probably wouldn't eat there for breakfast again..
Excellent service under difficult circumstances, Great Staff & Good Selection of Products & Faultless service
Nice to be back after 18months +.2 drink but table service was good.most enjoyable.
Good pub, good atmosphere, reasonable price, decent pint
Great pub and atmosphere as expected with wetherspoons establishments, best value for money we can find all around the country.
Plenty of room to sit though toilets on the second floor.
Nice wetherspoons friendly honest staff phone was returned to owner while there close to rail station
Outstanding. Danny and staff were spot on. Friendly helpful and very capable. I shall return
Clean venue but had to remind staff about food order
thought the breakfast could have been better but alovely Guinness 👍
On a Monday, the Carling was £2.55 a pint, not sure about the other beers on tap,, but it's on offer every Monday, the Curry deals are reasonable also, so worth a visit especially on a,Monday..
Cheap drinks and food, but good value.
Value for money. Wheelchair access, good food, served quickly. Coffee refill. Close to train station and shop. Friendly, helpful staff. Would go there again.
Big old pub , good price drinks and food .
Loads room but gets full on Rugby Days always
a nice atmosphere and some times a bit of a singsong if the right crowd are there.
Great pub. Friendly staff. Just a pity itsno longer selling strongbow. Will lose custom me thinks.
My experience at Western was good.
I met up with a bunch of friends and had some morning drinks so no alcohol haha.
The staff were friendly and the pub is very spacious so you can be comfortable.
Lovely relaxing atmosphere 😎
What's not to like about a weatherspoons... Great price and nice location
Excellent atmosphere. Served quickly although very busy. Polite helpful staff.
Cheap beer and food. Good starting point for a night out in Cardiff
Usual Weatherspoon's menu, staff friendly and courteous.
A nice relaxed atmosphere a building with history look forward to to a further visit.
Food was lovely great night staff very helpful polite and friendly
Pleasant enough could have done with cleaning tables down quicker as it wasn't overly busy.
Nice enough food and great price drinks. Bouncers need to sort their attitudes out tho.
Couldn’t have asked for a more ideal breakfast after our ride from Holyhead. Cheap and cheerful but still an absolute cracker of a breakfast. Staff were super helpful with all the COVID issues too. Can’t fault it for the price. Perfect spot for a few morning beers before our train home. Recommend 👍👍👍
Great atmosphere. I went in the time for the ruby. Great service. Brill time
Typical wetherspoons , great value ,great service
Brooklyn beer was warm even though it came out of the fridge
Buffalo wings and hit sauce... yes yes yes
Delicious food , great vibe 😋 👌 😀
Popped in for a few drinks with friends. A nice pub and the drinks are not that expensive. Didnt try the food, but looked nice with plenty of variety. Would visit again.
Really enjoyed the place, good staff, good atmosphere. 👍
Great place for a pit stop before onward journey to Motorpoint arena. Beer reasonable can be very busy. Good food.
Wetherspoons what's not to like?
Big trek to the toilet but that's standard ☺️
The place is nice, The service is relatively quick though on busy days like Friday night you can expect a boisterous and noisy crowd
Good service and polite staff only wish it was the same in Penarth.
Beer great food great service brilliant
Nice and near to central station. Drink was good
Was fair price for food and a nice pint of bitter
Lovely pub and grub great interior
Nice popular wetherspoons pub, plenty of space and even an "outdoor" section upstairs. Toilets can be a bit of a nightmare to navigate, especially after a few.
Friendly staff quick service good social distancing
Great location situated near Central station. It's a very big pub with 2 floors. Food and drinks are cheap and cheerful. It's a Wetherspoons nothing more to say.
Close to the railway station, good for a quick meal or breakfast depending on times. Fast efficient staff.
The building is fantastic and listed. The pub itself is massive, and gets very busy. Remember there's a bar upstairs too!
Brilliant ...food wine and cider ....don't drink beer ....so was very happy with our time visi8
The only downside to this Spoons, as it differs very little from your standard chain restaurant, is that it's right next to a very busy train station. This sometimes leads to rowdy people going away and stuff. Generally not all that common so not much to complain about.
Great food great service. Shame that the doors are open when quiet as it can get cold very easily. Only because of Covid which is understandable.
As for the app there is no delete options what items to take off your meal but you can with your drink. So make sure you tell someone at the bar after you ordered especially if you have particular allergies.
Staff are fantastic very strict on the track and trace which is good to see. They are very welcoming and make sure that your ok frequently. Even though you can't see their smile on their faces (masks) you can with their eyes.
They make you feel very welcome there if there is anything you need they will do their best to meet your needs.
Slick service even when chock a block on Intn day.
Download their app to order and pay and get delivered to your table
Not bad but no steaks
Great place to go been gping there for weeks all staff an managers we met was top people. But on our 3rd week the new girl manager🙁 tho way she treated people and spoke was not good for the company she literally had no respect for anyone like she owned the place was way out of line.
Our favourite Cardiff spoons! Right by the train station so it’s always our first stop on arrival into Cardiff. Can’t go wrong!
Food exceptionally good and great value.
Great atmosphere was very busy but plenty of bar staff on duty so no waiting lots of people drinking outside
Went there for breakfast, very good would recommend.
Staff are realy helpful and the food is good
Great location and good atmosphere on game day
A great spoons. Lovely staff, received our food and drinks v quickly. Cheap and cheerful.
Very clean in all areas,Fast service and was seated at a low table, very helpful staff that also opened the disabled toilets for me and my husband. I would recomend it to anyone.
It's a wethersooins so you get fair value for money.
Staff were friendly enough and tables cleared quickly.
Good place for food and drinks, large establishment with lots of tables, it has an upstairs terrace which can be nice in the sun. Good staff who are friendly.
Typical Wetherspoons pub, good beer and good service. You know what you are getting and nothing not to like.
Really nicely done food serves me 1 min before stopping food which I didn't expect of them as I came not knowing what time they stopped
Much better than its neighbouring property clean tidy and modern
Nice food good customer service too
It's a Wetherspoons pub so the food is reasonably priced and table service can be provided if you use the app. I have had breakfast, lunch and dinner here on recent trips to Cardiff and the food has always been good and arrived quite quickly. There is plenty of seating available, and I have never had a problem finding a table here during lunchtime or a weekday evening.
I like the proximity to the train station as it's a good place to have food and drinks before or after a train journey.
Great pub, helpful staff, clean toilets, 1st visit of the day to Weatherspoons in Cardiff.
Good food and great staff
Meh not the best food cheap beer mind
Clean, friendly and a great selection
Great pub especially if your looking for cheap drinks. Not far from central station so easy to leg it for the last train. Great atmosphere here on rugby days but can get very busy. Toilets are down some stairs but there are plenty of them.
Tables well used but emptied quickly nice food and good service
Great pub but:
The pub is lovely. Looks lovely, clean, right near Cardiff Station and so on its a good weather Spoons. But its a very busy pub, popular and very noisy. So if don't like noise or having to shout at your friends then go elsewhere
Good old spoons... cheap drink and food... and to be fair food is good for the price.. I do like a spoons
What a cool place.
Very informative. Great for children! Super clean. Friendly staff
What you'd expect food wise from a wetherspoons.. Very loud and members of staff flouting Covid restrictions for friends of theirs by moving furniture which I'm pretty sure isn't allowed?
I can't really go into much detail about this place, I guess it's alright but it's a spoons, basically the same as all other spoons. The drinks are cheap, the atmosphere is exceedingly working class but the food is microwaved to the correct temperature.
If you like to smoke then there is a covered shelter for smoking, but it can fit about 10 people in and in a pub of 100 smokers 90% are going to get a little wet. (Let's be honest that's why they went out in the first place)
The staff are friendly and before a certain point in the evening (like 4pm) I guess it would be okay for a family meal... But it's a spoons, so it's better for hair of the dog, cheap shots, finger blasting the misses in the alley behind and moving onwards.
Nice space room and staff very friendly and very very good communication
Went there after the Wales v Italy game. Watched Ireland and Scotland. Friendly staff and the security were really well organised, making sure the walk ways were clear.
Haven't been to the Western in years since I stopped going to town, was pleased to find it was still a great place to go for a drink.
One of the supervisors was a lovely human being. Definitely coming back
There's a good atmosphere here. The staff our friendly & hardworking
Pub was packed with Christmas shoppers and people out for lunch yet the queuing time for drinks was minimal. Plenty of staff serving and all very pleasant. Had pizzas for lunch......very tasty !! One of the best Spoons I've been in !!
Good pub, outdoor seats in the sun and a decent pint of black dragon, visited a few days and never too busy
Located very good for the railway stn. Nice pub.
Ooh I love a parma violet gin a pint and fish and chips mmmmmm
Nice interior and building in a scenic town and historic. Spent time here after the Rugby. Hope the regional products return soon.
usual weatherspoons . heavy drinkers and watched 2 fights in the 1hr we spent there . I wouldn't take my gran .
The waiting staff was amazing managed to get 2 separate tables for a family of 8 on a very busy day. The food how ever was burnt and dry.
Staff and service good. Sat outside. Had to clean table myself. No body was around cleaning them while we were there.
Really welcoming guy on the door and really friendly, polite serving staff. Food was very good and the setting was comfortable and a pleasure to eat in. We are a family of four with two teen-agers.
This place has super staff who are kind and care about people - from juniors to management
I went to this place and had a fab night on my hen do a few years ago, but in recent years it's been their kindness that keeps me going back.
Whenever I visit Cardiff I always try to buy a homeless person a coffee and/or food. The last two times I have been, temperatures were sub zero and when I've taken homeless people in, the staff have been warm and welcoming towards them, allowing them to stay and have the free refills I've paid for, even after I have left. They never stay too long, but for the short time they are in the Great Western, homeless people can enjoy their coffee and get treated like human beings with a smile and the same customer service that I receive, always excellent.
I sing their praises on social media with good reason. Keep on doing what you do guys, you are awesome!
Nice place big bar offers the usual menu for wetherspoons, staff helpful and friendly and good service
A massive spoons with a lot of seating and multiple bars. The prices are good and the staff were lovely. My only complaint is the staircase, which I realise the company cant do much about, and the outside seating is cramped. They didnt mind us adjusting tables to accommodate our large group as we were going to the arena for a gig after eating at the pub.
Not too bad, good location and food fairly standard for a wetherspoons, cheap and cheerful
It's a weatherspons.
Great location in city centre
Very busy city centre pub on two levels. Even though very busy our food arrived promptly and it was easy to get served. Typical Wetherspoons style pub, great value all round with food and drink deals. I always feel I've received excellent value for money.
We love spoons anyway. Lovely place where it's situated. There was plenty of seating, outside and upstairs.
Beers were plentiful and great selections. Food on the other hand not so good. V poor in fact. For bangers and mash(veg)- Mashed potatoes were similar to "smash". And peas were frozen peas by looks of it. For the price of it I expected I little bit more effort/quality.
So I was a bit apprehensive to get a pint here at 11 o clock in the morning. People might judge and at all that. Turns out it was actually a bit late to start drinking.
Cheap beer, cheap food and sticky floors. Ideal place to start the Saturday. Would have breakfast here again
It's a perfectly OK Wetherspoons near the train station, but in my opinion if you're in the area, it's worth the 2min walk round the corner to the Prince of Wales, which is bigger, has a garden, and is an old theatre.
Great place to start the night at this end of town, close to the train station, nice little dance floor and great prices on drinks!
Good spoons a short walk from Cardiff central though as can be expected can get pretty manic here on a Friday night
My first visit to Cardiff for a while but always make the Great Western my first stop ,again I wasn't disappointed, excellent breakfast and service. Welcome to Cardiff!!
For some reason I've never been here over a rugby weekend bit will do so next time. A great choice of beers and good atmosphere. The food looks typical pub grub and whisky it wouldn't be my first choice, what I did see of it looked OK.
As train station pubs go, this is pretty good. Cheap, sells food, busy and bar is usually easy to get served. Good place to start a pub crawl also and good meeting point.
It's a spoons, beer selection not very good the day I visited.
Great place to go to for food and a pint, breakfast meals aren't too shabby, main courses are delicous and it ain't too far from train station and bus stops
Good service still reasonably cheap.
Plenty of staff to serve you friendly atmosphere stayed a while 🙂
Great international match day pub. Big screens, selection of beers and not too pricey compared to some places in the centre. They struggle with food orders on international day though so plan ahead or go elsewhere. Gets busy and crowded as first place people go off the train.
Very busy pub right by the station. Its a wetherspoons so you know what your getting. With that being said last time we visited we asked for a hot chocolate for our non drinking friend, significantly less effort was put into its presentation (he was given a chocolate stick and directed to the hot water) than our drinks which was disappointing.
Great place for drinks & social meets upstairs beer garden is lovely in the hot weather but fills up quickly.
Pricing is as all wetherspoons are with a good choice of beverages @ reasonable prices.
Food is good quality for a wetherspoons and never had a bad meal there in the 10+ years I've frequented there
Typical spoons good price okay food and decent selection of drinks not much more to say really 😂
Got to love a good spoons, perfect for a pint or a quick bite to eat before a long train journey, always go when I miss my train or finish a long train journey with no food, mobile charge or water
Incredibly fast food service and lovely staff. Good isn't amazing but will come worryingly fast so perfect of you're in a rush
Also seems to be a popular place to start a trashy night out
Not a bad pub based right next to Cardiff Central station so perfect for a quick drink either to or from the station. Nice table and seating around outside in the summer. Pub is set over two levels. The downside is that this pub can get extremely busy, especially at weekends. Those not familiar to Cardiff find this is the first pub they come to so it attracts a good passing trade.
Cheap drinks, reasonable food. A good place to start if you are going out in Cardiff for the night! Good atmosphere. Toilets are always clean. Small smoking area outside upstairs if that is of interest to you.
Good service and reasonable food prices. I always get the separate side salad to make the meal a bit more appealing. Works with the steak, curry, or mixed grill. Even better if you use the app
Well situated close to city centre and attractions within easy reach on foot or use the good value regular buses. Secure on site parking. Attractive large bedroom. Lively bar on site serving a nice fayre of food.
Great barn of a place just 5 minutes walk from Cardiff Central. Lots of tables, some outside but it does get very busy on weekends. Food is standard Wetherspoons menu, decent stuff at a good price. Some Welsh dishes on the menu which is cool, but be warned the red dragon curry is extremely hot!
Great selection of drinks. Good bar staff. Door supervisors are a bit gung-ho, not really sure they are experienced in hospitality. Haven't tried the food, but probably standard 'spoons which is fine.
Good at what they do. If you want cheap and cheerful food, with a reasonably priced drink, then Wetherspoons will always deliver. Just don't go there on Valentine's Day and be surprised when you are single when you wake up in the morning.
Came in for a quick pint and good was quiet
Staff very friendly yet food came out eventually they kept asking is this yours but I gave you a table number. Went back and then we had our food. Nice but slow!!!!
Very good service and prices.
A very welcoming place , staff friendly and helpful . I had a problem using the app to order my meals and a lovely lady called Sabrina was so helpful and we ended up doing order on till , she took screen shots off my phone to show head office the problem . I would love for Sabrina to be recognised for her help please , she also came over to see how everything was and gave my nephew a balloon .
Went there for nice meal lunchtime, when got home realised left glucose meter there. Phoned very busy bar, and dropped in later to pick it from office. Smiling and very helpful staff, much appreciated and thank-you. Well done- great pub made by great people. Regards, love and Peace.M.
Not to bad considering it's a Wetherspoon pub. On this visit it was not overly busy and service wasn't too bad at the bar, only an average wait. However, tables were messy and it felt like the place needed a deep clean.
Noisy, busy, exactly what you would expect. Super cheap but the food is always really good and the drinks are as they should be. Perfect first stop for a night out!
Cheap drinks. However ordered a drink via the app ended up waiting 10 minutes even though it was quiet. Also alot of tables that people has left were not cleared very quickly.
Very good, felt very Covid safe. Well organised. Not bad meal, excellent for price paid. Staff very helpful.
Typical Wetherspoon pub. You get what you pay for with the food but with cheap drinks.
Good for a quick pint or 2 between trains
Nice place quite spaced out for seating, clean and tidy. Staff are pleasant and friendly, ladies toilets are modern, very clean and well maintained. There was a real ale festival on and food is reasonably priced.
This pub is a great place to meet as tou get off the trains in Cardiff. It's always busy and has a good atmosphere. The drinks are well priced as in all wetherspoons. The food is decent enough for the price you pay. It's a large pub with plenty of toilets. Always start a night in Cardiff here due to its convenient location.
Covid safe, but lacks atmosphere
This can be very busy at peak times but always had lovely food and good deals. Seating by large windows is great 2 people watch while having a glass of whatever you fancy great to catch up with friends.
Great lunch, friendly staff, lots of choice, help with ordering where needed! Can't ask for more :)
Great for a Friday evening and night out. There is a live DJ on and the music selection is good enough for a dance...and the King prawn 🦐 selection is good combined with drinks. I have always enjoyed my nights at the Great Western.
Like all whetherspoon establishment you get a good range of beverage including crafts and wide choice of food. The mini ribs I ordered was so, so. Do ask for a sampling before choosing your ale from the tap.
First time visited I highly recommend it food and staff outstanding very friendly 5 🌟
Good location with reliable pub fare at reasonable prices
Great and friendly place. staff are pleasant 👌very helpful if your stuck using the app like I was 🙈 much appreciated
Great place to get a full cooked breakfast at a reasonable. Can get overcrowded on certain evenings when important or top events r held in Cardiff.Ideal upstairs area for meals or a drink.
Called in for a few ales before catching our train, the lady who served us was so friendly and genuine- hope management read this, she's a credit to you all--
Got talking to this lovely lady about a Spoons curry I had a few years back which was liquid lava, apparently it's been toned down now and doesn't need a straw of sugar after every mouthful.
Have docked a star- Gents toilets are a bit on the untidy/unclean side. Maybe it's the passing Station trade that call in to use them?
Big place on 2 floors nice atmosphere
Tight spaced with my limited mobility - wheelchair, good atmosphere
Great central location for a cheap pint!
Quick service if you use the app.
Food is as expected from a weatherspoons location.
Small outdoor upstairs area is a good addition.
Wetherspoon's - Smaller than many of their establishments as such I feel it's a little more intimate. Unfortunately, this establishment has reduced the number of ales it offers (replaced by the usual offerings that target the teen scene etc). Has always been cleaner than the Prince of Wales (currently being refurbished I understand, let's hope that when it reopens our feet will no longer stick to the floor!).
Only popped in for a quick half whilst killing time before my train. Staff were polite and attentive didn't enjoy the barman's recommendation though but hey ho, can't win them all, it was a cold beer which is what I wanted.
Great place to start your night and meet your friends. Lovely staff in there especially Jon. Great atmosphere and music good. Does get extremely busy. Especially on match days (My favourite) 😁🏴🏴🏴
Fantastic venue. Ideal for meeting people traveling by train as the station is very close. The food, drink and service are all faultless. I visit regular and recommended it here.
Service superb and it was a match day
We had Welsh steak and ale pie mash and peas the pie it was luvly jubbly could eat it again with a very fruity Rose wine the place was very busy but excellent service can not Fault in any way when in Cardiff city centre again will eat there we can Recommend it Mike and Sheila.
Great staff and a lively atmosphere
Great food and real ale
This pub is a lovely place to go. Food and drink is reasonable price. The food is hot and quick service. Staff are polite and kind.
Lovely pub, shame the roof garden wasn't open. Service was good if a little slow, but it was rammed.
Excellent service even during busy times. Had late lunch and early breakfast last weekend, couldn't fault either.
Friendly service from Jarod who checked all was ok with meal.
Will be popping in again next visit to Cardiff.
Quick table service due to covid restrictions
Just popped in for coffee, Covid precautions well in hand. Pleasant staff, the guy at the door was really helpful. Worth a visit, within easy walk of Central station.
A good place to stop for lunch and a drink whilst changing trains in Cardiff. Tremendous value for money. There is virtually nothing to eat inside Cardiff Central station, so do yourself a favour and take a short stroll to this excellent Wetherspoons pub.
It's a great little historic pub. All good and expected from Wetherspoons. Good city centre location. Great to grab lunch
Would recommend the app! Makes ordering food and drinks a breeze.
Great place as always. Straight off the train and then breakfast before moving on.
They don't pull the lager off first pint of Stella was not nice.
Good for food and a pint 🍻
Nice friendly place bar staff was lovely tonight very helpful and it was clean 👍
Nice food shame it comes out as child sizes not worth many paid for it
Had to visit chippy lane as was still hungry
Good. But tables not cleaned.
Need to check regularly.
A cracking pub, meals ordered via smart phone... Food delivered was quick and easy food was tasty..
Good pub good grub
Nice enough, ok food
Best place to enjoy your beer and match
Had a great night out.
It's a good passing pub for travellers. I had a cuppaccino which you can keep refilling, not a cozy atmosphere as its a big place but a nice pub especially if you want to watch the rugby!
Great location for the train station. Pretty quick service at a reasonable weatherspoons prices.
Not the best Wetherspoons in Cardiff. I’d recommend avoiding on Fridays/weekends when it’s turned into a nightclub come 9/10PM. Fairly dark and dingy inside but it’s cheap enough and clean, as with all Wetherspoons.
Great friendly pub - a local in the centre of town. Always our first port of call. Cheap beer, good food, fantastic atmosphere. Hugely recommended
Very convenient for the train station, good breakfast, not too busy, staff very good.
What a nice place this is, as always Wetherspoons is a good reliable place to go me my wife and children have been to this particular one a few times what stood out this evening was the bouncers they were so helpful and nice I think I've given the great western a 5 star before but they are having another one now because of them, I won't woffle but I will say you can go there and not have to worry about anything your looked after 👍
Went on a Sat night.. So very very busy. Used the app to order food. Service was fast. Staff were friendly. Food was great. Will go again.
Right by the Cardiff Central train station, so it's an ideal location to kill some waiting time or delayed time. As it's part of the Wetherspoons chain the prices are cheap to reasonable for both food and alcohol. The Great Western is old and has retained some of its original features, like the fantastic cast iron stairs that join the floors. Upstairs is cosy and more private than the downstairs bar, on the first floor there is also a secret outside smoking area. I like to sit outside in fine weather and just people watch.... 😊
One of the better Wetherspoons in Cardiff. It's a Lloyd's bar too so has music. Can get very busy at the weekend and is often used as a starting point for people after work or before heading off to Mill Lane or a club
What a great breakfast Historical railway station
Typical city centre chain pub. Situated at end of St Mary St and close to main railway station. Large pub with dance floor at night. Wetherspoons owned do drink offering and menu as every other Wetherspoons pub. Can get busy on weekends. Popular with hen and stag parties.
Nice friendly staff I didn't have wait long for our food
Good city centre pub, historic old building. Close by to Cardiff central railway station, and the hotels and bars of St Mary Street. Good value Wetherspoons, great for city centre Cardiff.
Great service and very welcoming but it wold be nice if they wold hand out or have a wifi code somewhere in the bar 🤦🏻♂️
Great table service with the app.no need to go to the bar. Food was good and delivered very fast as well. Better on the inside than i expected from the outside.
Classic spoons so you know what you're getting. Cheap drinks and huge variety. But should have more local brews which can be found at nearby pubs, such as the Cambrian Tap or Cottage.
Recommended for food and price.
Nice place to enjoy a meal in Cardiff
Just your typical weatherspoons. Cheap and cheerful
Good food, reasonable prices and friendly staff. If you want a quiet night out don't come on a Friday Or Saturday as it's packed. But other nights are quiet.
Went in on a match day so not a typical visit. Staff worked hard to serve as fast as they could. They did try and serve people in order and not let people jump the queue.
Good service and good meal
Nice bar near the train station. Always busy can take some time to be served. Prices are average for some drinks bottles are highter
Lovely place for drinks and thw breakfast was very nice
Its ok typical wetherspoons cheap and cheerful, a drink was spilled and we were made to clear it ourselves but other than that it was ok.
Lovely spacious pub with reasonable prices.
You get what you expect for a Wetherspoons. Cheap food which, whilst not being of the highest quality, fills the spot along with affordable drinks and ample amount of seating. A great spot to start your night out.
Nice pub, selling a decent range of drinks, food was good too. Staff where friendly. Place was clean and tidy.
Perfect if your killing time for a train
We all enjoyed our meal piping hot!!
Always been a good pub. Puts
All the other wetherspoon pubs in the area to shame. Sorry to say this but my opinion has changed! This is the third wetherspoon pub I have visited tonight and like the other two their keg beers are off. No beer in the Prince, 6 out of the 8 pumps are not on. No wonder Tim wanted to pull out of the social networking sites he didnt like the truth.
Average breakfast for the money, hardly any beans. Coffee good.
Great service, lovely big breakfast, highly reccomend
Typical spoons, cheap and cheerful
Good atmosphere. Good place to start off when you get off the train
On our visit it was a busy Saturday afternoon. The bar staff was great, the food was lovely. The clearing of the tables was slow. Tables not wiped enough.
Lemonade was flat, staff were aware but still serving it. Not the best service really
Speedy bar service lousy breakfast service...still waiting 30 mins
Food must be ordered through the app, all outdoor spots are used by smokers. Food is good and served quickly. Good wine, beer and spirit selection
Very helpful staff. Kind and considerate. Good service
Good value and choice with fast service. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here!
Nice Weatherspoon pub, meals are OK, typical pub meals, but ok for what I needed as out with a few lads for a bite and drink, catch up
A particularly good bar man who approached from front to ask if meal was OK. It was. Often staff creep up from behind and startle you. Hardly a way to gain customers
Very nice and hot breakfast, staff very friendly.
Had a small breakfast and my partner had a big breakfast not very good fried egg was not cooked very nicely looked like and tasted like rubber bacon not cooked enough not enough butter given for all our toast nothing special
Lovely atmosphere.
Fantastic friendly staff
Friendly place, disabled loo on the ground floor. Some little dips getting round but not too much. Well worth a visit during the day.
Food as usual for a weatherspoons pub was excellent value and very tasty the only down part was the very poor disabled access we had to ring a bell on a Fire Exit door which nobody answered so we had to find someone to open it for my son to get his wheelchair in
Had a nice glass of wine sitting in the sunshine great service thankyou .
Great breakfast and pint
Usually pretty good, great bar upstairs and down. Food is usually nice but found a hair in my plate today!
Yet another of the many wether spoons in Cardiff, literally a 2 minute walk from the busiest one.
Great seating areas both upstairs and down stairs. It even has a beer garden upstairs ( built into the roof I think).
The crowd I'd a mixture, the ones who stand out are definitely the weary travellers that have just got off a train because I'm not sure if you guessed by the name that it's right next to Cardiff central train station.
Worth a visit though. Especially if you want to find your favourite wether spoons.
Cracking brekkie
Drinks and food are very reasonably priced with special offers available. Generally an OK pub but nothing special that would want to make you return. Bar staff very friendly and good customer service but is let down with people that have had one to many so tends to be very noisy.
No queue, clean tables, plenty of seating available.
The bar staff were fabulous on such a bizzy afternoon, with take that at the stadium, I did not wait more than 5 minutes at the bar, I even ordered food and again waiting time was brilliant, very well run pub 5 star to all
A great Spoons pub
Nice friendly pub with tidy prices aswel
Great value gin and tonic . Friendly staff. Had a breakfast. It was ok but could have been a bit warmer
First pub off the train so really busy early doors, typical chain pub, so beer reasonable, food is a bit over priced and too many plates so the portions are smaller, but worth a look in, ice seating in the sun outside when the weather is a bit kinder.
The same network what Prince of Wales (which is 3 min by walk from The Great Western), but a bit less stylish. Prices simillar or the same, quality the same - food is fresh and tasty.
Nice place. Thanks 😊
Cheap lovely gin £3.99 double
Had a lovely meal here. Staff very helpful & friendly. Food good.
Busy .quick service at the bar. Clean and tidy.
Great place good staff decent grub
They have yummy food here. The service is always good and the atmosphere is inviting. I can't give it enough praise.
Great beer. Good prices.
Standard Wetherspoons city centre pub good beer and reasonable
Your classic wetherspoons although this one is a Lloyds bar so can play out of date music attempting to get you to dance. Service here is always quick and being so close to the train station is its biggest appeal.
Had a breakfast there toast a bit cold but good value for money and all the tea/coffee you can drink for £1.50
Great pint of Magnets only £2.29 staff great as always first visit will have to go back again well done JDW nice pub
Nice historic pub,but had a makeover,a little more modern now, generally popular, reasonable prices and average food.Good staff and clean.
Fun, lively bar. Good for a few drink at the end of a week day or a more up beat place on the weekend, nice smoking area upstairs outside too
Fun, lively bar. Good for a few drink at the end of a week day or a more up beat place on the weekend, nice smoking area upstairs outside too
Very busy and a lovely buzz atmosphere, you may have to wait for seating, once you have your table you can order drinks/food to your table via the Wetherspoons mobile app
Nice place, food is what you expect. The smoking area is very nice however on the weekend it's full of coked up chavs and coked up 40 somethings cracking on to teens
Cheap prices for food and alcohol but could do with a good clean
The Great Western was well organised and the staff were very helpful. The food, as usual excellent.
Super breakfast and 2 cups of coffee for 4.65
One of my favorite spoons. A good spot to start a night off if your aiming for St Mary's Street or
Mill Lane. Can get really busy on Friday and Saturdays
Covid safety measures are in place, staff are polite and everything is reasonably priced.
Good location. Not many different ales on.
Nice pub, lovely tuna panini and salad👍
Really well set out for Covid can't fault the way the staff have adapted the pub & themselves - very impressed
Great place to meet freinds, good food.
2 pints for less than a fiver 😁
I like this pub better than prince of wales but breakfast this mornin not good. Rock hard black pud n undercooked bacon. Coffee not the best
Nice lunch friendly staff
Drove from Dartmouth to visit our daughter and popped in for a drink and bite. Unfortunately our daughters Quonoa salad wa missing the Quonoa and peppers. They changed it, however this time it was missin6the avocado. By this time we had finished our meal. Advocado brought out with 3 New drinks. They only do 2 salads but hey ho they were polite enough and have us free drinks. Well done for dealing with us professionally
CHRISTMAS dinner was brilliant with a drink for 9.99p. Nice area upstairs where we had our meal.
Staff so friendly, nothing was too much for them, and entertained my little one with colouring. Amazing food and great prices
We went from Lydney to Cardiff on an off-peak train. There was a problem with the ticket machines that day and we had to pay at Cardiff. Good job my friends could do that for me because I'm disabled.
Always a good place to start if you're planning a day visiting some pubs. Good breakfast at a reasonable price.
Great starter for a night out gets very busy. Foods good for your basic meals and cheap
It's a wether spoons, so good prices and always busy, good for a meeting point before you tour Cardiff as it 100 yards from station
Usually crowded however there is a lively atmosphere, plenty of quieter seats upstairs and fast service, especially using the wetherspoon's app to order.
Good place for a drink with friends. Visited on a match day and the staff here were very good and did not have to wait for service.
Electric experience during football only down fall was the place was so hot and either no air con or it was broke but don't let that defer you from going there staff were lovely
Near to Cardiff Central station and handy for a first or last pint in the city. Decent range of ales at an affordable price.
Great place! Good beer. Friendly atmosphere and staff quick service even on a Welsh rugby international day!
Nice pub, selling a decent range of drinks, food was good too. Staff where friendly. Place was clean and tidy.
Wetherspoon's - Smaller than many of their establishments as such I feel it's a little more intimate. Unfortunately, this establishment has reduced the number of ales it offers (replaced by the usual offerings that target the teen scene …
Great starter for a night out gets very busy. Foods good for your basic meals and cheap
For some reason I've never been here over a rugby weekend bit will do so next time. A great choice of beers and good atmosphere. The food looks typical pub grub and whisky it wouldn't be my first choice, what I did see of it looked OK.
Standard Wetherspoons bar.
Nice pub! Good quality of spoons! Friendly atmosphere and it had lots of people in there!
Good city centre pub, historic old building. Close by to Cardiff central railway station, and the hotels and bars of St Mary Street. Good value Wetherspoons, great for city centre Cardiff.
Very busy pub right by the station. Its a wetherspoons so you know what your getting. With that being said last time we visited we asked for a hot chocolate for our non drinking friend, significantly less effort was put into its …
Very busy place, popular with groups, noisy and understaffed - lots of glasses and plates left on tables, although o was served quickly at the bar. Sticky table type of place!
All good, food beer and atmosphere.
A bit sparse in the decor for a pub called "The Great Western" as I was alone went to the toilet & on return my table had been taken, Sign saying TABLE OCCUPIED would be advantageous.
Cheap food and beer. It is what it is.
Good value for money
Best weatherspoons around. Always busy
Cheap and cheerful. Great food for the price, an ideal stop off during our whistle stop of Cardiff.
Had a great night stuff fantastic
Good wetherspoon, lots of space, nice food
Another good place to eat and drink not over priced even though it's in the centre of everything.
Got a table, no problem both times today, good atmosphere for Christmas. Decent prices too
My daughter and I met my sister for breakfast at The Great Western, as usual, staff were welcoming and friendly. Breakfast was tasty.
Good food. Plenty of seating. Surroundings a bit basic however more than ample.
Food is satisfactory and doesn't cost you much. Even have Steak Club(£7.99 each including a drink) on every Tuesday.
Good place, love the food, also did my daughter's vegetarian breakfast was lush will definitely go back i recommend friends and family, good friendly staff too
A typical Weatherspoons Pub Restaurant in Cardiff City Centre near to the Central Railway Station. Always good food and good value.
Great prices for beers, just no music. Fantastic place to chat and drink. Meals also available.
One of the best Wetherspoons pubs in Cardiff, sometimes it would get really busy at weekends but the service is not too bad
