D. A.
Great friendly pub, really good range of beers - lots of 0% options for drivers! Sat on the terrace - great view.

Really liked this place although it was empty. Lovely feel to the building you can almost sense the history. Some exposed parts of the Roman wall have been made into a feature. The balcony area has some nice views too much to my surprise.
I'll be popping back in here.

Drinks very reasonable in compared to other town centre bars. Nice chill atmosphere, able to hear yourself think and chat, even with live band playing
L. B.
Nice pub, handy for the Colchester Art Centre.

Came here with with 5 friends the other week for a reunion! Great service, the bar lady Emma was fantastic kept checking in and offered table service for us all evening and played great music, better then the rubbish being played elsewhere! she recommended lots of different rums for me to try. This pub has an amazing selection on spirits. Will 100% return on Thursdays to get the fantastic service from Emma again. Thank you, looking forward to trying the pie and mash 😁

Beer ok, not really my sort of place but handy for the Art Centre

If you are looking for charecter, friendly staff, and exotic gigs, that's a good choice

Great place for some drinks and wonderful atmosphere with such lovely service! Especially from the bar tender Emma, shes the best!! Highly recommend!!

Not quite sure what to make of this pub. Have been here several times over the years but not for about 15 years. Recent visit in July 2019 reminded me why I don’t visit often. On the positive side, really nice beer on tap. Also, the beer garden outside is a really nice space. On the negative side, the place is looking tired and dirty. Hip hop music being played was quite annoying (I appreciate this might by my personal taste but not a fan of club music in pubs). This place has so much potential but fails to realize it. Having said all that, I’m probably just not their target clientele and I can’t blame them for that!

Quite friendly people running the pub, but I'm afraid the food was very disappointing today, the chips were dark and very soggy. I just think they need to reduce their menu, because my friends' roasts looked okay. My partner had to send her food back as it was still frozen, but they didn't charge for it to be fair. I think they need to work on their menu, though the service was fine. They also need to research which potatoes make the best chips!!

Nice place to be on a Sunday afternoon - lots of history on this area, BUT my food was terrible. Cod and chips but fish was frozen in the middle and the 'chips' were a very dark brown, very greasy, cold and limp. I was asked if I wanted it heated up! Er no...... A real shame as the Sunday roasts looked OK, just my luck! The staff were lovely though......I may try it again

Nice new furniture on the terrace, the inside is nicely kitted out as well. Staff really friendly and welcoming. Had a blue cheese burger with the usual extras, really well cooked and presented. A great experience and I will be going back!

Having met the new licensees who both very welcoming and friendly and served a great pint.
Sitting out on the excellent new furniture on the veranda to the rear of the pub with good friends, enjoying the views.
I look forward to when they start doing food as Rob has an open kitchen policy(anyone welcome to inspect the kitchen) goes to show how much they value a clean pub and well kept cellar I and the Colchester Town Watch wish you All the best.
Don't take my word for it give it a look for yourselves.

We had a mid week visit so it was rather quiet. Small choice of real ales, not all on top form! Given the location of this pub it seams to attract a younger student crowd. Four empty cans found at our table... On a Wednesday.
Pool table availability, small beer garden. Toilets upstairs and nearby parking at St Mary's multi storey. Situated opposite Mercury theatre and nearby Arts Centre so great venue for Pre show drinks.
Often have student music nights eg drum & bass and later opening hours on a weekend. You can bring takeaway in on an evening

A friendly, well stocked traditional Pub with loads of places to sit and relax, also has a sizeable outside seating area too.
Zero undertones of bad atmosphere that you can sometimes sense when walking into an unfamiliar Pub for the first time.
A really good place to go pre theatre as well, as can get draft rather than the bottled beer that is sold at the Mercury bar.
A. T.
historic pub. needs better beer on tab. staff good though, and great location
K. K.
Landlord and Landlady are such lovely people! They have reasonable prices and a mass selection of drinks! They do great Karaoke nights and I would recommend for a night out!

Great cosy pub and not too pricey. Could do with a larger selection of beers but that's about it. Friendly staff, quiet atmosphere, pool and sports, overall a great experience
A. E.
We had dinner inside a beautifully preserved listed building over a 2000 years old Roman gate. The Thai food was lovely, staff were friendly, and the prices surprisingly affordable. We'll be back.

This place is under new management since just before Christmas.
My wife and I came here before the theatre for dinner. The staff here are very friendly and welcoming, the food we ordered tasted really nice and at a really good price.
I would totally recommend giving this place a try.

The bar maid was very welcoming and friendly.this pub is excellent for young and older people.bar prices very reasonable.thus is a lovely pub,and has a very historic past.
K. H.
Love this place. Great for a drink or some food before going to watch a show at the arts centre

Great selection of drinks and a very lively balcony overlooking Colchester always full of friendly people. The staff are great and have many tales to tell. Fans of Blur will enjoy sitting in the same corner as Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon did in their early drinking years.
K. O.
The food is delicious, the staff are friendly and very attentive. Everything is well priced! Would recommend to anyone passing by to stop in for a quick beverage or a small bite to eat!
M. S.
Beautiful pub with an amazing sun terrace. Very friendly bar staff and lovely atmosphere, also found that they hold a lot of music events here which sound great!
C. B.
Toilets outrageous! Guinness far too much of a head! Other than that, decent welcoming sociable staff, and tables are quite clean. This was during the day time btw.
Y. B.
It was so lovely to be able to chill in the sun with music on&a lovely drink. The people who work there are very nice too. It will be nice to go back.
M. W.
In transition with new managers but I think a gem waiting to go! Give it time to get up and running and it will be a good find in a slightly out of the way location. Handy for St Marys car park, Mercury and High Street in town.
V. E.
Lovely staff, friendly atmosphere, back to what the hole used to be. Great selection of drinks too. Found my new local :)
C. O.
Love this place. Proppa hidden gem of a place. People are sound and the staff are great, always there to help. And always have the best time in the hole in the wall!!
L. B.
I used to go there as a student, and stopping by for a pint I learned its still student friendly. It's been part of the landscape for years.
N. N.
Nice place to go to get cheap drinks before a night out. They don't serve coffee. Just pints and more pints. Not really a stopping point if you are a tourist.
c. c.
they put a hole in my asscheeks, i thought it was just a funny name
K. H.
Amazing place! Great food, excellent selection of drinks and friendly, happy staff! Always a good atmosphere. Highly recommend!
J. P.
Just right. The new family has got a grip from moment one and it is simply what you want in a pub. Lovely people and proper beer. Thanks
E. B.
Great outside area, and a charming little maze of rooms inside. Staff are friendly and drinks are well priced.
M. B.
Reasonably priced pub, great location and an air hockey and pool table... What's not to like
A. T.
This location is incorrect, the Hole In the Wall is next door to the Mercury Theatre. Music such as the Mick Hutton Jazz jam once a month, regular beer festivals twice a year.
C. P.
Nice beer garden but service was a little slow
R. J.
Reasonably priced tequila. Pool table. Rough clientele.
s. h.
Fairly dire - drunk guy spoiled our evening and none of the staff tried to sort him out - food ok but nothing special
Q. o. E.
Great pub, good staff too
Y. C.
New owners who have done a great job rejuvenating and giving this pub a new lease of life, watch out for their music nights.
A. A.
Lots of potential to be an outstanding pub.

Great 80s night disco. Unfortunately this is the second time I have been in here when they have had no draught beers
R. M.
Went into the whole on the wall with my friends, the landlord was very friendly and welcoming the food was incredible and I would recommend to anyone!

Nice atmosphere but super expensive. Miss pound a pint nights.
