Great menu with tasty food and friendly staff. Good selection of beers and also decent outside area with heaters and it's located nicely in the middle of town.

Exceptional service, good food, reasonable prices, and very dog-friendly. I come here often for lunch and have been on a few occasions for drinks after work. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the service is quick. I'm a fussy eater and they kindly cater to my requests without rolling their eyes! It has a real old-pub feel inside but is clean and well kept. There are definitely loads of regulars here, which says a lot in a town full of pubs and restaurants. There is an outside seating area, which is unbearably hot sometimes due to the plastic cover overhead - but it's a nice place to sit otherwise. The main reason I keep coming back is because it's the best place to eat in town with a dog. The staff all seem to be animal lovers and he is always given a bowl of water and a treat. Unlike other places that 'tolerate' dogs, I feel like they're actually pleased to have him there! It makes such a huge difference to me that he is welcome, as he is with me for my lunch breaks five days a week. Thank you for this.

Very kind and attentive staff! We had some hard time to find a place for a drink (coming from London) and it seemed like they couldn't give a table for us, but even after rejected, they shouted out for us to come back as a table freed. Bit cold bar but food was excellent and the prices are reasonable. Highly recommend it!

Visited three times now, can't fault it. Dog friendly, great beer and the food is decent too. Great variety on the menu and you don't have to wait very long even when it's busy. Water bowl for the dog and treats on the bar so everyone gets VIP treatment.

Welcoming, attentive, staff, work hard to make sure you never have empty beer glasses on your table! For the last couple of weeks I have come in mid afternoon, have been guided to a table and then served immediately. The beers are well kept and when, I ordered ham, eggs and chips a fortnight ago, I thought the food was decent for the price. If you want to eat and drink in a well ordered atmosphere in a very old, town centre pub, this is a good place to visit.

I really really loved the food and the atmosphere, absolutely excellent, I was heading for five stars until I went to the men’s toilet and saw a CAMERA!! Whaaat?? Fortunately I inspected the camera and it seems cracked like someone has broken it, which relieved me… so just one star missing because that little detail in itself for me was shocking, come on! A camera in the toilet!!

Had the Purple Dog Burger, and not dressing it up, it was really really good. Great flavours, tender and juicy. Sadly the fries let the whole thing down. Tasted like the cheapest frozen chips available, and the regular price is really high, would expect better fries. But back to the burger!! Yes, just so good!!!

Visited for the first time today for a spot of lunch. Very good choice including for vegetarians and vegans. Food was fresh and tasty. There was plenty of it and it was good value for money. Great range of drinks too. Only thing stopping 5 stars was the slightly long wait for food given that the place didn't seem that busy. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in Colchester.

We have been here for the quiz and also to eat at the weekend. The atmosphere is great and the food is of a nice standard for pub food. The quiz nights were ace. There is a nice undercover outdoor area with heaters for smokers. Inside has a mix of sofas, chairs and stools, something to suit most. On quiz nights it could get a little packed but the staff were always friendly and you didn't struggle to get served.

This pub always has good music. Sunday's roasts are satisfying and drinks just fine. There is space for smokers in the garden, just be aware that they have Christmas lights on , it's nice but very "fit" prone. Good pub!

Fantastic place to go for a cheeky pint and burger. Beer options are on point with local ales as well as craft selection. Beer garden is lovely and have whittled away many an hour there with a couple of pints and a paper (of which they provide a selection). The food is of a good quality but I'm a big fan of their burgers. Give it a try.

Excellent pub, good choice of beers on draught. The staff are all friendly and polite. For a pub the food is of a high standard indeed. I have had worse food in so called restaurants. The food arrived very hot at our table. I had sausage and mash, the mash was very smoorh and the gravy thick and full of flavour. Even the onions had a nice crisp finish to accomply the sausages which were also of a high standard.

I have visited the Purple Dog on a number of occasions for a drink, I to date have never eaten but I have always had a pleasant experience with good drinks and good service. The only downside is the toilets they are very cold and not overly clean and often run out of toilet roll.

Newspapers and books on the side for customers, all right wing rags apart from the local paper. Couple of TVs on rolling news with no sound. Music is usually ok and gets better a in the evening. Outside space for smokers. Men's convenience lets it down. Possibly the oldest pub in Colchester. Prices a little high for what it is but definitely one of the best town centre pubs for a relaxed friendly vibe.

I feel completely ripped off at being charged £1.60 for a SMALL soda & lime. It wasn't even full to the top of the glass. That would be £3.20 a pint. More than some of the beer in there. I shan't be partaking again. They should warn you first as you can get it for 70p-£1.20 at better places in town.
