Reviews of The Crown
C.
Menu varied, but not too big. Service outstanding. Our server was very intuitive, conscientious and attentive. The food unfortunately came to us cool rather than hot but by no fault of our server as she was the only one we saw serving many tables . Therefore, more staff would have ensured hot meals and less stress on the remaining staff. Having said that, our server showed no stress at all which is all credit to her and we had a fantastic night regardless. The atmosphere is lovely and warm. The decor is relaxing and a great place to meet with friends and catch up.

Visited this pub today. We have been looking for a local pub that does a good roast dinner. On arrival, all of the staff are extremely warm and inviting. We had the kids with us too, nothing was a problem for them and even offered us if they would like the kids food first. Result! We did not have to wait for the two year old to finish dinner after we had!! We chose the ‘Sunday trio’ Roast dinner. So pleased with the food that was delivered to our table. Amazing quality, portion sizing was spot on. Great ambience, sweet staff and scrumptious food. So glad to have found this place. We will be back again next weekend and maybe even a cheeky date night during the week. The other food looked amazing too. Thank you very much.

The Crown is a very nice pub. It looks like it has been fairly recently refurbished, as the decor was lovely.
We had 3 courses and every course was delicious. A lovely roast turkey dinner for main course. Very generous portion of turkey.
Our young waitress Shannon was attentive and friendly and service was very good.
From our experience, would definitely recommend.

We had fabulous meals
I would recommend the pork or Hunter chicken. If you like a chocolate dessert try the chocolate flower pot with edible flowers. It was so beautiful and delicious.

This was the first time I ever visit colchester and I was happy I found a place that was cozy and homey , we were a party of 5 and we were welcomed by who I assumed was the owner ،he was both charming and funny .
The waitress was a beautiful young lady who was very patient with us since we didn't know what to order and kept changing our minds , she was all smiles and was genuinely helpful.
What really impressed me that a couple of the orders we made we asked them to be without bacon and five minutes later they came to the table and explained that the other plates we ordered had bacon in the sauce and wanted to make sure if we knew that and if not they were happy to make a whole new sauce .
As for the food it was really good and we enjoyed it very much .
The dessert was just amazing and it was a perfect ending to a amazing dinner.

The service from start to finish was excellent.
Our hostess for the evening was Joanna from Poland. Oh my gosh, talk about above and beyond. She didn't stop for one moment, she had time to engage with us, was very attentive, polite, came to our table just the right amount of times, she even had time to chat with us, as I asked her a few questions. Amazing, She deserves a bottle of champagne or some flowers. Seriously.
Sadly, the food was running out, things were off the menu making choices limited. This is probably the fourth visit I've had where this has happened, which is why I've given a 7. Also, my Mother and I were very warm and having to fan ourselves with the drinks menu......
S. B.
Big pub, food led, plenty of space both inside and out. Was lovely to sit in the garden as the sun went down. Drinks wise, it’s a fairly standard macro offering - Peroni, Amstel, Stella, Pravha, Guinness, Sharps Atlantic and then some cask beers. Could do with a few more staff when busy but those who were there were friendly and welcoming
A. K.
Excellent food excellent and friendly staff as well as dog friendly one of the best pub restaurants I've been made my wife 30 wedding anniversary lunch just that bit special
R. S.
Wow
We walked in and was greeted by some friendly staff, who it turned out couldn't do enough to help.
I had the Rib eye which was perfectly cooked and sweet potato fries, with the prerequisite English mustard.
My partner had the fish and chips which she said was lovely if slightly overcooked.
For desert I had the coffee with a small Eton mess, Small? it was as big as my partners raspberry tart. The waitress was lovely
P. L.
Rio our server demonstrated excellent customer service. Food was delicious, every care taken with on of our party who has a severe dairy allergy. An all round very relaxed and enjoyable family experience today. Thank you
Y. Y.
Alex was brilliant. She should have been overwhelmed with a busy restaurant (being understaffed) but nothing seemed to phase her and we were served quickly and efficiently! The chef was also excellent and was helping out. We will definitely return.
M. S.
Really really nice classic english pub. lovely warm feel inside and plenty of outside space, will be bringing my dog next time! Had lunch for 3, the food was all very good and hot and the cocktails were nice aswell. Will definitely be back
A. G. U.
Firstly, the ambiance was better than their sister pub, the Three Jolly Wheelers, simply by the fact there wasn't a table and chairs graveyard but tables were cunningly positioned to enable social distancing.
We were greeted by David, the manager who has improved this hostelry immensely since the chaotic days of John and Tim.
Luke was our server, at no point did we feel rushed or ignored, exactly the service one is looking for. Beer was in superb condition, my camra rating for it was exceptional.
When our friends in our bubble joined us we ordered when we were ready.
Starters didn't take long, spiced cauli soup could have been a touch warmer, but was tasty, lamb kofta was good, juicy and succulent, prawn mango cocktail was as you would expect, and it was nice to see they've stopped being so stingy with the bread with the duo of pate.
Mains, most had roast, meat was not over cooked, veg and interesting combination and wasvery good, roasties could be better, great yorkie.
Puds were lush and only 50p to add ice cream to the cheesecake. The crumble in Vintage inns is simply unparalleled, no competitor at this point does it as well.
We were pleasantly surprised that the bill was a few pounds less than estimated. Thanks to all at the Crown, a jewel in the area.
P. R.
Bit fancy menu for me but veg curry tasty. Would prefer pilau to jasmine rice which was congealed. Mini dessert with drink very nice. Disabled loo not raised toilet but access good.
M. D.
No one greeted us on arrival
Eventually, the lady with the big hair who seemed to be in charge arrived and showed us to our table, but with no smile and certainly no warm welcome.
She informed us that some items were missing from the menu and that the waitress would go through this with us.
In fact 5 out of 10 starters were off the menu.
No explanation given at all
And there were a couple of mains unavailable too
So it was more of a case of....
Well maybe you could tell us what IS available!
This seemed strange so early on a Monday evening.
Most of the waitress seemed to be in training, but all lacked any personality whatsoever.
The only warmness we felt from any of staff was upon leaving where a foreign, maybe Greek man, said that he hoped we'd had a nice time and said good evening.
All that said, the food we did have was very nice as was the decor.
L. B.
My 4 friends and I had dinner at Ardleigh Crown Colchester yesterday evening. The service was first class and the food was first class also. Such a lovely atmosphere we are definitely going to go again.
a. k.
Nice decor with oak beams & exposed drinks. Had the beef brisket sandwich for lunch very nice good quality food. Tempted to try the banoffee pie. Good selection of food & drinks
A. S.
had our Christmas boxing dinner here at The Crown with my family. Never regret choosing this place we might do it again. Their Christmas special menu is delicious especially the turkey roast! the dessert we had was creme Brule and its one of the best in town! highly recommended
B. S.
Came in last Thursday to meet up with an old work colleague for dinner and drinks.
Staff are very friendly, good selection of beers and the food was great! Will certainly be back again.
C. B.
The food was great. Our waitress, Charlene, was absolutely lovely. Couldn't have asked for a more friendly, patient and all round delightful person.

I've used a few vintage inns now and sadly this didn't match up to my favourite fowler's farm. The roast seemed small with very little veg(which was dried out) only two slices of beef which was less than the others.
Plus side staff very friendly (but would have been nice to be asked if everything was ok) Just wish the same quality from fowler's farm applied to the other vintage inns I've tried.
J. W.
Late Anniversary meal, lovely place not too crowded, staff where very friendly, meal was hot and well presented plenty of it. Still as good as it used to be as we hadn't been for some time.
M. H.
Had the chicken & avocado sandwich on soda bread
Which was really dry including the minute piece of chicken and about a tsp of advocado inside it , certainly not worth the money .
My husband had the fish finger sandwich and the bread again was dry and hard to eat with hardly any filling to it ,we got plenty of chips though which were nice and the staff were very friendly.
T. T.
Low beams and exposed brickwork is what I liked about this place. It's set in quite a big land with a huge car park and a lovely garden out the back. No play park for children unfortunately just a well kept small field you could probably have a little kick about on.
We didn't eat here but I will be back to try out the menu and have a more in-depth review around then.
Edit:
Finally popped in to eat lunch and had a lovely hot brisket sandwich on sour dough with a beef dripping sauce which came out in what I can only describe as a thimble? Shame, it was lovely. The Mrs had a ham and cheese on SD and she wasn't complaining either.
I'll be back for something more substantial next time.
Bumped you up to a 4*

Lovely pub with a warm atmosphere great staff and some amazing food that is well priced. Will defiantly return for another meal
S. M.
Lovely place to eat out with the family. Food was lovely and service was good. The staff were friendly and the restaurant was very clean. Will definitely go back. Only criticism was they brought one of my daughters food out early but not my other daughters so she had to wait .
R. E.
We use this venue a lot for family lunches. This visit was for my Dad’s birthday and the first time we had all got together for two years.
I needed a table for 10. I completed the group booking form three times, but didn’t hear anything back. As the date was getting closer I booked two tables and wrote notes that we wanted on larger table. I also called and explained the situation three days before.
On the day when we arrived there was no message passed on, so we had to explain it all again and wait around while tables were moved together.
Our waitress was new, but lovely. She left after our main courses and we were completely forgotten about. We had to go to the bar to ask for drinks and desserts and then chase the desserts. We also had to ask for the bill several times and again we then went and paid at the bar. Would these things stop us coming back? No, but it did put a bit of a dampener on a special occasion.
G. H.
Lovely ambience, great food and service
K. W.
Welcoming and friendly.Good prices . Decent sized portioned meals. Great selection of traditional and vegetarian options. Excellent service especially from Tab who was serving our table. Tab was very helpful with drinks and meal choices that I had not had before. The violet Gin and lemonade and the baked camberet were out of this world. Violet gin is a favourite I always ask for now when dining out. To date no other baked Camberet tops the one that I ate at the Crown. The main course and dessert were just as good. Definitely definitely recommend the Crown A very added plus of the pub being warm from the lovely burning open fire.Planning to go back very soon.
P. K.
A busy place at lunchtime where we enjoyed a light lunch with diet colas. My vegan baked vegetable wrap with chutney was very tasty, especially because there was beetroot in the wrap. My fellow dinner had the chicken BLT sandwich with chips. The latter were crisp on the outside and soft in the middle and suitably tasty. The sandwich was well prepared. The pub was busy but we sat outside and food was brought to the table. An enjoyable lunch.
H. W.
Have had much better experiences here in the last. Last visit not so great. Lots of the meals weren't available and orders were wrong.
J. B.
Food was great, staff were friendly, service was fast, very reasonably priced too. Overall very good will definitely be coming back!
M. J.
Very clean, good friendly welcome, good choice of drinks, good food and wine menu, well presented food. Disappointed that sandwiches and light bites were not available.
D. G.
Great food and service. Plenty of parking.
D. S.
We have been here three times in the past week. This being the third. We have been staying at dragonfly inn. Everything here was lovely and all servers top notch.
C. C.
The food, service, decor, and value for money were excellent. Will be going again. Recommended
A. B.
I think you could improve on my meal.
The service was great!
A. L.
Great place, comfortable, friendly service, amazing elderflower fizz, and loved the vegan menu. I had the vegetable tart, then the pecan tart for dessert. Would definitely recommend:)
K. p.
Top food. Just had my christmas dinner and was excellent, friendly staff, good service. Reasonable prices.
D. B.
Amazing place, great food and extremely nice staff Nicole is the best..chatty and caring

We booked for an anniversary meal, whilst staying in the area. Lovely pub with good decor and friendly staff.
R. T.
Very pleasant experience. Good food, good wine, attentive staff and pleasant atmosphere.

Our second visit to this fantastic country pub. We hadn't been here since summer 2021. A last minute booking via phone, the manager managed to find us a table with no trouble at all. From the moment we arrived, we instantly felt welcome. Open fire on a miserable cold day was a welcome sight, the ambience couldn't of been any better. We decided to have three courses one which a traditional Sunday roast, unfortunately the trio of meat was not available. The Sirlion of beef roast however was no disappointment. The food was cooked to perfection, and desert was a nice way to finish a lovely meal. All rhe team were friendly we left feeling well looked after and will certainly be returning. Keep up the good work.
A. B.
Me and all my family had a fantastic meal out tonight. There was 10 of us. The food and staff were just brilliant. We will definitely be going back there again in the near future!
R. M.
I had a lovely meal here just before xmas so I was looking forward to going again, but ended up disappointed. I had the chicken pie, which was amazing but the mixed veg that came with it, the biggest part being broccoli, was not cooked properly. I don't mind my broccoli a bit under-done but I couldn't get a knife into the stalks, it was pretty much raw and inedible. I had sticky toffee pudding for dessert, with custard that was only just lukewarm when it arrived and completely cold before I had finished eating it. Such a shame because the pudding was delicious but it was ruined by the cold custard. I mentioned it to the waitress, who just smiled, nodded and took our plates away.
V. T.
Disappointed! was looking forward to the roast lamb but unfortunately was not expecting for it to be served very pink/red which kind of spoilt the rest of my dinner as the blood had gone onto my potatoes. Would be nice to be asked if that’s how you like your meat to be cooked. It’s certainly not for me.
N. H.
Lovely pub, with possibly the poshest Hunter's chicken I've ever had. Ok, it wasn't perfect - the chicken was perhaps slightly more done than needed, and the "triple-fried" chips could have been crispier - but it was very tasty - and the beer was good too! Would definitely go back!
D. S.
Absolutely top notch food, one of the best vegan roasts I’ve had. Shame they didn’t have any vegan dessert options but there ya go.
Service was a little slow today but could see the staff were working very hard to keep up. Perhaps a little short-staffed today?
C. C.
Excellent experience
The food was generous and well cooked
The servers were friendly
J. M.
A bit pricey and the steaks were a bit tough, but overall a reasonable experience with very friendly staff.
M. W.
The meals were still the same prices but alot smaller on the plate (apart from the roasts). Deserts were pricey and small.
R. S.
I have previously reviewed this establishment, and given it a very low rating.
However, time moves on, and I tried it again
This time all of the food on the menu was available, the food served was really delicious and the staff were very very happy and helpful. Enjoyed my visit and will be back
G. Q.
This is a lovely pub and restaurant with excellent quality food and good customer service. I'm shocked!!!
D. F.
Top food, top service, repeat.... Additional note Claire was friendly and attentive to all our needs.
A. H.
stumbled across The Crown but from the feel of the place, the great food and warm welcome will definitely be back
L. T.
Lovely location and lovely food.
Service was a little slow due to staff shortage but all staff were helpful and polite

Update October 2022
Found the menu reduced and some of the meals not to the usual high standard. Also the disabled loo wasn't very clean with the toilet paper dispenser open and just a few sheets of paper available. Do the facilities get checked very often as the place wasn't very busy?
Our choices:
Starters:
2 x Oven-Baked Button & Paris Brown Mushrooms (V)
in a garlic & Cheddar sauce with sourdough bread.
This was disappointing as presented
as a bowl of sauce with mushrooms. We found the sauce very sloppy with a number of mushrooms added. Could have done with being thicker sauce. Or mushrooms placed on the sourdough bread with thick sauce poured over.
Maple-Glazed Chicken Wings
Served with asian style slaw.
Wings were cooked well and tasty. The slaw was just some finely cut vegetables that were dried up and placed on side of plate.
Mains:
Hunter’s chicken schnitzel
topped with Cheddar and pancetta with smoky BBQ & tomato sauce and triple-cooked chips.
Chicken cooked nicely but chips were cold.
Fish & chips
Beer-battered cod with triple-cooked chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce.
Cooked well, presented well. Enjoyed it!
Spicy Pepperoni Pizza
spicy pepperoni, red chillies and cheese.
Well presented and enjoyable.
Our main disappointment was the reduced winter menu. They used to do dishes like pork belly and Beef Bourguignon etc. They were always cooked perfectly and very enjoyable. Having such a reduced menu makes us less likely to return anytime soon.
I understand that some of the issues raised are beyond the control of Ardleigh Crown as Vintage Inns set the menu. Hopefully they will add more specials to the menu to give more choice. I'll hopefully hear if they have more choice and pay a visit.
When I visit again hopefully I can give them back the 5 star review. I've been a regular customer for many years and hope they get back on track soon.
t. S.
Had a fantastic Sunday roast here food was lovely service was great definitely recommend and will be going back xxx
T. F.
What a wonderful dining experience from the moment we walked through the door. The staff went above and beyond. So nice not to have pub grub. Even though a reduced menu there was plenty of choice. I opted for baked mushrooms and belly of pork with black pudding mash . My husband pate and fish cakes. All was delicious and veg cooked to perfection. Will most certainly be going back. And didn't need to download an app to order
P. R.
Enjoyed the visit to the Crown, lovely surroundings and staff were friendly. Prices a little expensive
M. B.
Decent place to visit for a drink or good, always good food and value to go with it. It can be a very busy place, so worth booking in advance. Only draw back seems to be they run this pub on minimal staff and have done for years as it never changes and only reason it doesn't get 5 stars.
M. G.
Ok good, family restaurant, so as expected. Seemed to have run out of a lot of stuff, no pizza (?),and some pudding ran out. On Saturday lunchtime.
K. L.
Great pub with great food!
Highly recommend to give it a try
J. I.
What a warm, toasty & festive welcome!
A friendly greeting awaited as we came in from the cold night air, into an inviting bar area hung with traditional Christmas Decs and twinkling lights.
The smell of good food and an open fire completed the cozy scene - I knew we were in for a relaxing, enjoyable evening!
My family (Wife and three teenagers) sat at a round table set in an alcove created by one of the bay windows. We were not far from the open fire and could see the warm embers and hear the occasional crackle from the logs. It was busy, but the type of busy that enhances the atmosphere with the low hum of conversation and merriment.
The service was friendly and informative, the food was plentiful and very tasty with an acceptable wait between starters and main course.
We enjoyed the sort of evening that epitomises an ideal family meal out, the sort of evening I'd gladly have every night of the week!
Thank you all at the Crown and Merry Christmas one and all!
G. D.
Service was above and beyond. Thank you very much. Oh food was good too.
N. S. (.
I stopped by for lunch with some friends, we were greeted by a lovely waitress and she showed us to our table, she took out order and made sure to ask about dietary or allergy requirements which I hadn't heard before.
The pub it's very cosy, it keeps its traditional pub looks but kept modern with up to date, clean, decor.
They had a few ales and a variety of largers too, I ordered the beef brisket sandwich which came with skin on fries and a beef dripping sauce, all I can say is it was lovely, the meat was extremely tender and the sourdough bread was crisp and fresh, I couldn't taste the pickling of the onions too well, though it's such a minor thing as the sandwich was still amazing, only thing I wish was that there were slightly more of it but I can't complain for the price. A great place to take family or friends for a lunch or dinner, reasonably priced and friendly staff, free parking too but make sure you register you reg number to avoid a ticket.
P. B.
Very lovely pub. Great food, lovely service! Very affordable and vegetarian- (and vegan) friendly
J. F.
Popped in for a quick drink mid afternoon. Bar staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The place as a whole looked nice and smarter than my previous visits pre covid. Took a menu home with a view to booking a table for a meal and although the offerings looked respectable, for me the price looked quite high. Impossible to truly fairly say though based on the menu alone.
R. B.
Well this the first time here. Will definitely be coming back. The service was top notch. As for the food. Did not have to wait long. It all came out pippin hot. Would definitely recommend. Note the menu on the Web site is set, but when you are here sometimes it changes. Not a problem at all
C. C.
Was very nice, the meal was perfect
J. B.
Lovely pub, excellent service. Will return to try the food
R. A.
Unbelievable. Over the moon. Barman with a fantastic beard served us and he couldn't of done more for us . So welcoming and is now our new local...
G. M.
Staff were very good and attentive to Customer needs 🙂 There was a limited lunch time menu however it was a tasty choice and enjoyable but I was disappointed on the amount of food served on the plate 😪
D. W.
Lovely county pub set back from the A12 not to notice it from outside. Beautiful beer garden and friendly staff.
G. M.
Stopped off for lunch the other day.
Food was spot on
Staff all freindly and enjoying the banter
Definitely drop in again
R. W.
The service was great and our waitress Charlene was extremely attentive.
S. S.
As usual service was great with friendly staff also able to take our dog inside
C. W.
The food was really great and good portions too
M. R.
Decent food, decent prices, easy to park, good beer garden. Not very covid save however. Waitress kept pulling her mask down to talk to us which made us very agitated.
I. M.
Great atmosphere, great service, food cooked to perfection.
P. E.
Lovely location with a big outside garden for sunny days and a charming inside for the cold days!
G. B.
Food is presented very well and certainly is tasty. We dined on chicken schnitzel, lasagne, burger and pizza, do we experienced a wide variety of the menu.
Service was slow, possibly an effect of furlough, however 45m for starters and another 35m for the mains was excessive. Our group of four was seated at a table best used for two, whilst later a pair of customers were offered a table twice the size of ours. This did make the experience a little uncomfortable and cramped.
J. H.
Only had a fish finger sandwich as visited at lunch Time but it was lovely. Friendly staff and quick service.
T.
Last minute booking on Sunday evening. Thankfully, there was a slot. Was not disappointed. Lovely sirloin roast. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Nothing too much trouble. Will return again very soon
H. H.
Lovely friendly staff, really nice food, all in a great atmosphere. Loved it, would thoroughly recommend it.
A. H.

Shame those little things do make a huge difference
.
I. M.
Immediately felt welcome. The food and the service was great.
L. A.
Had the mixed trio sunday roast last week and the majority of the meal was excellent, especially the meat, the roast potatoes however were a let down and could be cooked better. The service always seems to be slow even when we book early and its quiet. Will always come back though as it's a lovely pub with mostly decent food.
A. B.
Went to the crown for a family meal and wasn't disappointed. Food was amazing and service was fantastic, would definitely recommend and will be definitely going back, thank you team crown 👑
J. B.
We had a lovely meal with great service and beer to boot. Very reasonably priced, the lamb in particular was fantastic, the lamb rump was very well cooked and lovely melt in the mouth rendered fat! Thank you for a lovely evening out
J. P.
We came for by partners birthday meal with my in-laws who drove over from South Wales: Excellent food and portion sizes. We ordered from the weekend treat menu and found the choices were brilliant. Our server Aaron was amazing. Plenty of conversations and banter and nothing was too much. We’ll definitely be returning x
P. H.
Good service and good food service friendly staff okay
A. G.
Good atmosphere, friendly staff, good food
j. l.
Was 15 minutes early- offered a seat in the bar area, given menus and our drink order was taken quickly and we wefe advised of any items not on the menu.
Service was great throughout. Food was wonderful!
G. F.
Superb lunch served by charming attentive staff. Thank You for looking after us so well Tab.
M. F.
Excellent meal and friendly staff, will return
J. C.
Nice place to eat in with lots of character. The menu didn't have many vegan choices and one of them wasn't available either. I ended up having a very small salad with nothing added for £9.90. I felt a bit cheated!
a. m.
Been here a quite a few times and never been disappointed staff are always friendly and the food is out of this world.
Y. D.
Went for dinner on Friday night, lovely food and lovely staff, especially the woman with the sparkly lanyard (sorry didn't catch her name!)
K. B.
Post lockdown meet with friends. It's a large pub so plenty of space. Table service for food and drink. They had a couple of bitters on, mine was well kept. I felt comfortable with their arrangements and would go there again.
L. W.
Four of us went for a meal as we had a half price offer. All covid rules were followed but in a nice manner.
Really nice inside . Lovely and cosy as it was quite chilly outside.
Two of us had Gammon which was great. My husband had the duo of lamb which he said was superb!! The Hunters chicken was great too.
Two of us were full but one had crumble and one had brulee ( comes cold). These were not so good they said.
Staff were a credit to the pub. All very polite and welcoming. Definitely be back .
V. L.
Rio our server was amazing! Very friendly and inviting. She was very knowledgeable about the menu too! Loved the atmosphere! Was a great environment to be able to catch up with a few old friends over dinner and drinks!!
V. C.
Beautiful location and beautiful venue.
Fantastic food and good staff
A.
Went there for a friend's wedding reception. Very friendly staff and great service!
A. F.
10 of us visited for a birthday treat on a Monday evening.
We all received a lovely warm welcome from the Bar manager. Waitress was fantastic very helpful and apologetic due to lack of food that was available. No cheese for Pizzas. Burgers.lasgane. No fresh Veg available. No gammon toppings. Egg or pineapple. No lamb.
However. Scampi. Pies. Chicken were good.
Limited deserts too.
But on the whole a good evening.
But we will probably think twice visiting.
A. C.
Always drove past this place and never really gave it a second thought then me and the Mrs decided to start trying different places for a roast dinner on Sundays up and down Suffolk and Essex.
So the Crown was our first stop and I can honestly say it was one of the best roasts I've had outside of mums cooking. It was super busy but well staffed you know the foods good when I order dessert. I had the apple and blackberry crumble with ice cream again amazing. Kudos we will return.

We have been going to this pub several times a year for about 10 years now and apart from 1 meal (the manager approached us about that meal saying it didn't look up to scratch and he would knock the starters off the bill and give free desserts too, we hadn't even complained!) they have all been very nice. Usual sort of pub pricing in my opinion, we will continue to keep visiting!
D. S.
Birthday meal. Beautiful place set in lovely grounds. The Crown is definitely worth a visit, the menu is very extensive so everyone can find something nice to eat. Service from beginning to end was brilliant we weren't harassed, timing is so important when you are eating and I was so impressed with there non alcoholic range of drink!
L. W.
The atmosphere is lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was quite busy when we were there, so the wait was a little slower than we would have liked. More staff would have been helpful, as there was only one waiter covering a large area. The food was okay, but nothing that stands out enough to be memorable.

Recently under new management this pub/restaurant is well worth a visit. Had Sunday roast, shared a roast platter for 2. Food was great. Good portion sizes and great quality food. Service was first class. Lovely friendly atmosphere in this pub. A really well run pub/restaurant.
R. T.
Popular for meals and drinks and has a big car park so no worries there. Can get busy so book in advance or hope for the best. Standard pub fayre with very reasonable range of beers and wines. Well presented and served with a smile. Prices very reasonable for this kind of establishment. Staff very pleasant and helpful: thanks Corey. Only gripe was a number of dishes unavailable on the night but sufficient alternatives so no big issue.
A. C.
As usual, as always superb service, and as usual food beautiful , can't recommend enough x
J. C.
Luckily I had great company, this is a standard green king pub looks lovely but both food and service where below average. The lady next to us sent her good back 3 times then gave up! It's okay and you kinda get what you pay for but independent pubs changes about the same for much better quality food and far friendlier service
J. J.
Went on Bank holiday Monday there were 8 of us in the party, waited 45 minutes for food, when it arrived it was warmish, my husband who had cod & chips could not have tartare sauce as they had run out !!! after the meal we ordered coffee which to 40 minutes and when it eventually arrived it was warm. Have had good meals in the past but will not be rushing back.
D. H.
Since the menu changed, the food is not as good as it was, sometimes its only lukewarm. Before the menu change it was an easy 5 stars. My last visit a couple of weeks ago a lot of people were complaining. You can order of the Thursday set menu but last 2 visits they have ignored I purchased of the set menu and charged fe the main menu price's. I'm fed up with the place to the point we're I'm looking for another restaurant for date night with the Mrs.
A. S.
Lovely meal out. Friendly staff and great food. Very attentive and reasonably priced. Choice to eat inside and outside.
A. H.
Lovely Sunday roast plenty on plate
S. G.
Always have a great experience here. Bought our puppy in most recently and we were all very well looked after. Food is always good and a great choice on the menu.
K. B.
Alas not as good as before.
Food no more than average and floor around our table uncleaned..food and silver foil ...not cleaned up at all whilst we were there!!
M. S.
Great service and food. Highly recommend
S. R.
A pleasant environment with character. Large and convenient car park. Staff were very pleasant and attentive.
An average sort of meal - a limited and un-ambitious menu, somewhat overpriced.
Generous portion sizes, acceptable waiting time.
We had to send our dessert back to the kitchen which had been served lukewarm.
D. M.
Nice large pub with ample parking. Staff looked a bit confused and moved me about three times from table to table, not sure why...
Eventually when they settled on a table for us we ordered and the food didn't take too long to arrive.
I overheard a few people complaining about the cola and that it tasted a bit mouldy, like the dispenser pipes were mouldy, but I had a beer but when you hear someone saying that it still puts you off a bit so I left the rest of the beer.
Desert was nice, we ordered an Eaton Mess and it was yummy.
D. S.
Lovely food but did forget are starter. But did give us free dessert and run out of lamb at 7.oclock which I find very early to run out of it .but was very nice
B. N.
Staff well mannered and polite. Food was lovely
R. E.
People should know. This is loverly pub, restaurant, food is absolutely lovely, and Katie who looked after us was a very polite and lovely girl. Thanks for a great meal. Will definitely be back again soon.
F. O.
Good food and very obliging, was happy to do the meal with different vegetables as stated on menu. Waitress was lovely! BEWARE...they charge for water. Requested a jug of water and were brought refillable glass bottles.
K. C.
Very polite staff, lovely cosy pub with nice restaurant area. No drinks available on tap so diet cokes were expensive being in a bottle. Food was lovely but did have some things missing from my salad that the menu stated it would.have in it but all in all will definitely return
B. P.
Aaron was our waiter and he is very good. We had an excellent meal (4 different meals) all hot. The Crown has a very nice ambience and excellent gardens outside for eating.
L. W.
Very tasty beef and porcini bourgignon preceded by spicy soup or cheddar filled baked mushrooms. Service good. Nice atmosphere. "Tongues" of greyish bread provided let the whole thing down as completely tasteless and impractical.
a. s.
Visited with family Easter weekend, was busy, but didn't let the service down. Had a really nice meal. Staff were helpful, friendly & polite. Good portion size . Nice place to visit with family . Plenty of parking and lovely outdoor area, although inside looked lovely as well
S. L.
The staff were excellent and the pub had a lovely atmosphere. The food was ok but the vegetarian option was not so good. The burger was dear for what it was and £3 to add a bit of halloumi. Overall I really liked the place though
S. M.
Have been coming here for years and always have a very lovely meal with great service. Today my fiance and I brought his elderly parents for a meal which once again was very enjoyable and service as usual was great. Unfortunately the whole evening was spoilt when we left the building and we were faced with having to wade through an enormous puddle in total darkness to be able to get to the car park..ruined shoes and very wet feet, luckily our elderly guest didnt slip and fall. A definate heath and safety issue marred what could have been a lovely evening. I hope this drainage problem will be sorted as it is totally unacceptable and we wont be returning in the near future.
S. C.
Brilliant food, excellent service, had laugh with waitress and staff. Food could nor be faulted in any way. Carrots tasted "proper", as did all seasonal veg and cauliflower cheese. Mini chocolate pot dessert was best pudding ... EVER ... and trust me I've had a few in my time! Bit heavy on the cream in sherry trifle but good nonetheless my husband said. He also said chicken in chicken and leek pie was absolutely "melt in the mouth" good. Pate starter was "incredible" as we're my garlic and cheese mushrooms. All in all a five-star package. Well done the team!
S. M.
Very friendly service and staff of young people
We arrived late at night on Sunday (around 9 PM) and although they had officially closed the kitchen, they still reopened it for us. The food was good quality pub grub actually a lot better than normal. It's not Gastro pub standard that for the price-Excellent.
R. N.
Absolutely amazing experience at the crown . The Sunday roasts where fantastic and the service was perfect thank you so much Jack and the whole of the crown staff for what was a brillant visit.
G. B.
Always popular very large pub. Part of a chain but food is good and decent selection of beers. Good for groups or a dinner for two, or just a quick pint. Large garden for outside summer atmosphere and large lawn where dogs or children can run around. Service can be a bit slow but staff friendly. We go frequently.
M. T.
A nice old English style pun with central log fire in winter nr Colchester. Good parking and the food was lovely. Waiting staff were very polite and attentive and we had a lovely lunch. It is always busy here so I would book on their website to avoid disappointment. One of the better vintage inns.
C. B.
Have visited a few times now Always great service by friendly helpful staff. Food is fantastic and a great wine list It's always clean can get very busy as it's popular so probably best to book. The food is slightly more expensive than some "pubs" but it is more like home made and a little better quality. You get what you pay for.
I. M.
Had a lovely meal last Thursday 5th August which was delicious. Perhaps when things begin to get sorted maybe how about a change of menu.?
M. S.
Great food at a great restaurant
D. K.
Good service. Friendly waitress. Food hot on the whole but chips a little cool. Would recommend anyone that wanted spacious garden to eat in and good service with tasty food
K. W.
Great atmosphere, good food and nice wine. Around good choice.
H. P.
We booked a table for three people for midday on Sunday 2nd of July 2017, the waitress that served us was polite and friendly. The drinks were served after about 10 mins and it took a further 10 mins to serve a bread starter. We then waited around 40 mins to be served our main course. We were told that their ordering software had a problem, this in itself was fine, however, we were not warned of this previous to being served our main course and I feel it would have been good practice to do so, it just arrived with this explaination and an apology. My roast turkey meal was only luke warm and I ate it because I was simply hungry. Hence we did not stay and order dessert, which we would have done and I'm afraid we may find ourselves another venue for a meal out ☹️
j. d.
Nice food. Server was pleasant and polite but this is our 2nd visit and waiting times for food were shocking both times. We had children with us and was more of a day out than lunch!!! Won't go again
I. W.
4 years ago but edited 2016.
Decided to give the Crown Inn a try, as we were passing by and had never tried it before. It was a very hot day 30 Degrees. It was actually quite cool inside, doors were all open and there was plenty of room for people... Restaraunt tables were very spaced out and you did not feel too close to other diners.
We did get told that the main course could take 20 to 30mins due to everyone coming for food at the same time... normally they can cope, but because of the weather everyone was stopping by....Just to let you know this was a Sunday as well, which is normally a busy day on its own. We got our starters very quickly and had a few drinks. If you wanted to get drinks all you had to do was ask or go up to the bar and order on your table number....very easy to do.
This has had a few chefs over the years, and the food has been bad and good depending on who does the cooking. At the moment food is good.. January 216.
Now the one thing which was starting to get me a bit frustrated was that the main course took about 45 to 1hr to come.....way too long. But when the food came it was just right....perfect medium rare steak and Fish pie....lovely. As we were going the waiting time was 1hr or over and people were waiting because of the good food....
I would definitely recommend this pub and restaurant but would go for food during the week and on sat to avoid long waits...
K. C.
Table service was good, food looked nice though didn't eat myself. Not too much hand sanitiser around, and everyone using the same screen to enter car registration not ideal.
c. w.
It's lovely inside, and the staff are great...but the food really leaves a lot to be desired. Don't be put off going,,as maybe I was unlucky...just wasn't. Y taste...sorry
J. C.
Picked my wife up today after she had a meal with workmates she said food was excellent and service was also excellent I found it very covid safe.
F. N.
I live just up the road from here so pop in most weeks for a swift with Mrs N. No matter how quiet or busy it is you always have a wait at the bar. I was the only one there once, 2 people on the bar just talking and when one of them noticed me said one minute. It's a shame because this is a nice pub.
K. W.
Great food and service. Our waitress explained that there would be a 30 minute wait on food which was fine. A very busy night for a Thursday.
D. H.
Food was absolutely delicious. The staff where very polite. Have been here before and I can't fault it.
C. S.
The Crown has never let me down since I first went into the place about a year ago, the food has always been hot and full of flavour, your greeted and looked as soon as you walk through the door till you walk back out the door. in my opinion I find the menus abit confusing as theres a clip bored with 5 different menus on which I don't understand but that's the only bad thing I'd say, highly recomendable
l. b.
Lovely pub, very nicely decorated & staff & manager very friendly. Only had drinks, so cannot comment on food. Dog friendly in the bar 👍🐕🦺
R. D.
Lovely meal and friendly staff. They even cater for dogs, which is brilliant, we love to take out dog with us.
C. A.
Food was good service amazing
D. L.
Had a really enjoyable meal it's a very nice pub/restaurant we will be coming back again
S. H.
Great atmosphere, the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was perfect..... Can't fault it!
P.
A totally satisfactory experience. Clean. Plenty of seating. I was not familiar with how to order in an English pub nor could i find a beer that suited my taste. Great atmosphere. Cozy.
S. C.
Popular meeting place so gets busy and the car park is often full. Food is perfectly acceptable but nothing exceptional. The venue is friendly and inviting and has a generally nice atmosphere.
j. l.
Nice place very friendly staff . Nice Sunday roast .
W. L.
Had a family get together here. First visit. Lovely place, staff nice and welcoming. Great selection of food and really tasty. Would definitely recommend
H. M.
Portion sizes are small, my sons kids meal came out and it was bigger than both of our adult meals. Staff kept forgetting about us
B. R.
Great staff, food was very good and decently priced. Nice and clean and comfortable. Shame it will be closed for 4 weeks for the lockdown, good luck Crown.
A. R.
Excellent food & service as always. So glad to be able to meet up with friends again in this wonderful location
M.
Normally really like The Crown but today was not quite as good as usual. Having previously had the taglitelli on new years day which was amazing, today it wasnt so good. Im a big pesto fan and today i couldnt taste any in it where last time it was very evident. Also, may be im being slightly picky the bar guy seemed slightly dis interested although they did say bye when we left. As i said basicly ok but just a little down on usuall. I also want to add that on my previous visit we had a waitress who i think said she was over from their clacton site and she was lovely, very genuine and friendly .
J.
Fantastic meal, friendly service, lovely old wod venue. Lots of space. Just a lovely, comfortable, ver friendly place with excellent food and your not rushed out so can sit and chat. I would highly recommend the Crown to anyone.
D. W.
Busy, reasonably priced chain pub restaurant. Always a good atmosphere here, and good service.
The food is adequate, but not gourmet.
Great for a relaxed evening meal!
L. B.
My partner and I went to The Crown on a Tuesday lunchtime at about 1pm. He heard it had recently changed hands and I was encouraged by the fact that the online menu mentioned a vegetarian specials board despite only having one vegetarian main meal on the actual menu. I ended up choosing the Spinach and Ricotta Strudel from the main menu, but the vegetarian specials board had about six items on which all looked tempting. What really stood out was that they weren't the usual veggie lasagne, burger, etc that have become ubiquitous options in most pubs, but imaginative dishes such as nutroast, curry and bakes.
We both thoroughly enjoyed our food, which arrived in good time and tasted delicious and home cooked. Lovely puddings as well, I appreciated the option to have a hot drink with a mini pudding instead of a full size one as the main was hearty and filling!
All in all a wonderful dining experience which I would gladly repeat and recommend to others.
A. T.
Xmas menu not as good value for money as last year. Quality not as good. For goodness sake check your bill. We were overcharged. Never got to the bottom of staff or computer error with festive menu.
A. B.
The food took some time to arrive, the tables weren't clean in the gaps. We went at around 5:30 and it wasn't busy. The staff seem nice. Bit pricey for what you got
M. G.
Had a lovely meal service was excellent Food was lovely and hot Very polite members of staff. Worth a visit.
C. M. L.
Service could have been faster.
M. M.
Finally found this place after striving for what seemed ages for a drink and a bite to eat. Large car park and gardens rapping around the pub. Good food and drink, great service.
C. G.
Food, delicious, especially the flower pot pudding!, the waitress was really attentive and helpful
G. R.
Very pleasant with varied menu served by helpful and pleasant staff..also very good at being diplomatic as my reservation had been increased as a special surprise. Well done thank you !

Had a lovely meal out with the family. The food was really nice and came out pretty quick, and the girl who served us was really friendly. Would recommend!
M. S.
Very nice pub restaurant with a very homely feel. Traditional pub decor with lots of wooden beams make this place a very warm and welcoming place to eat and drink. Wide range of food and drink available.
D. J.
A good friendly place, nice staff, can get busy, our last visit had several dishes not available due to late delivery. Good value,
B. F.
Pretty pub, well presented, the food looked great (though we weren't eating) well kept beers and service with a smile! Recommended.
A. C.
We popped in here for lunch on the way to the Harwich ferry (we were emigrating after having got married in Cambridge that afternoon (apologies for unneccessary back-story!)). They couldn't fit us in for lunch, but they did serve us bar snacks, which comprised a pretty substantial selection of cheeses, olives and meats, which were delicious. They lose a couple of stars on account of the staff making us feel unwelcome / unimportant customers.
g. r.
Man alive the food's goon here! Really good.
So's the service. The staff remembered us from a previous visit despite a couple of months between those visits. This is now our"regular".
J. H.
Lovely garden area and nice inside. Food is good enough. Won’t blow your socks off but it’s OK. Few craft beers etc.
D. M.
Great food but service can be slow during quiet times.
l. b.

M. M.
Ate here on Christmas Day, do wasn't expecting excellence. The food was more than passable given how many people were being served. Difficult to comment on the speed of service as it wasn't a typical day.
A. S.
Very nice staff lovely food 😋
M. F.

Our first visit to The Crown was most pleasing with excellent food and service. Have read some negative reports but this was not our experience so will happily return.
M. C.
Had 2 meals in one day
Lunch was a baguette and pint of cider served with a friendly smile
Evening meal we had to book a table which had waiter service from a young man called Tom ( a credit to the pub and if he reads this and I call him " The night manager " he will have a smile to himself )
2 beautiful steaks and a bottle of wine , a cheesecake to die for and a very enjoyable evening all round .
Our football teams ( Colchester and Wigan ) seem to be going in different directions but if/when our paths cross again we shall return to this little gem
s. w.
