Reviews of The Old Crown
J. O.
I visited recently to enjoy a Christmas meal with my work colleagues. We were a party of 15 and had booked a table. The three course menu we had was absolutely delicious, and I loved my prawn-filled salmon parcel for a starter. The staff were very friendly and attentive. It was a great experience and a lovely place to enjoy a nice plate of food!
D. P.
Really great pub. Friendly staff and a enticing but small cocktail menu that's worth an explore!
Food was hearty, beautifully presented and really lovely. Looking forward to going back
I. T.

Delicious meal, excellent service. Really impressed. Very good choice of starters and mains, didn't look at desserts as was full! Good choice of wine at reasonable prices. Will definitely be going back.
J.
Lovely food! Had the monkfish wrapped in palma ham with a white wine sauce and vegetables/new potatoes. Washed it down with a pint of Wherry! Amazing service too and brilliant staff
I. M.
Excellent village pub. Food great, prices reasonable by todays standard. Will go back here for sure. Overall a good experience
A. Y.
Great little village pub with good food. The homemade rye bread was so good, we bought one home. There’s a little deli behind the pub selling local produce too.
T. T.
Been in plenty of times for a pint on the way home and many many years ago for lunch whilst working nearby.
The staff were very attentive and helpful and quite informative.
They have an unmanned deli on site selling bread, condiments, cheese and quail's eggs too if you fancy.
The food was good and I have to be honest it was better than I'd expected, not that I thought it would be bad I'm just saying it was better then I'd expected it to be.
Service was plesant and polite but also informative.
Overall I'd recommend it for pretty much all occasions.
Pop in and have a look
I. C.
Lovely pub , found a bit of plastic in my meal and the bill was free, good service and friendly

Booking for Sunday roast for 9 people, no problem. We arrived 10 minutes early and only had to wait for table to be cleaned. We were seated and drinking at our booking time. Great food and choices available. Polite and friendly staff. Lovely setting in the middle of nowhere, remote but beautiful countryside surrounding the area. Will definitely return and recommend.

Fabulous place. In only wish it were closer to London m

Great venue, lovely location, good staff. Food not so good. Will go back and try again. Overall, I’d say it’s worth a visit.

Fantastic meal tonight. We had the trio of lamb, which was delicious followed by a yummy fruit pavlova.
D. G.
Excellent food and a good selection of beers.
H. M.
Great food, good service , lovely friendly staff, my wife and I celebrated a special occasion there. I Highly recommend The Old Crown.
A. W.
Room was comfortable ,clean and quiet. Staff were very pleasant. Would stay again if passing
S. N.
Really enjoyed our delayed Mother's Day lunch. Food was very tasty, reasonable portions (could have eaten more!). Only issue was access to the loo, which is up a step. Perhaps a grab rail may help(mother-in-law suggestion). Highly recommend.
P. A.
Great food, amazing attentive staff.
Fish stew, felt like I was dining in the South of France.
P. L.
We seem to have a very good amount of great pubs and restaurants within a few miles of home, and the Crown at Messing is definitely one. Good food and friendly staff. Should have had 5 stars but car park a little small although there is kerbside parking close by Cheers.
J. R.
Stopped off for a quick pint on my cycle commute home. Friendly service and a nice local beer 🍺 will certainly be back to try the food.
J. D.
A lovely village pub. Very friendly staff.
M. D.
First time at this venue , have to say the food was great and the staff really friendly will definitely return
C. S.
Wonderful food, pleasant staff, a little gem. Unfortunately we returned again and the meals wernt as good this time and the roast potatoes we're rock hard. We did mention it to the waitress, which seemed to fall on deaf ears.
J. G.
Traditional pub with excellent home cooked food
B. W.
Enjoyed the Tandoori chicken skewer cooked to perfection. Not your normal pub grub but a more interesting menu. Staff very friendly. Would thoroughly recommend d this pub. Booking might be a good idea as there are not that many tables.
L. W.
An absolute gem. Fantastic food always and lovely friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful and clean interiors and a lovely outdoor setting too. Highly recommend, its one of my favourite countryside pubs in Essex.
K. B.
The food & service are sublime. Well worth the trip
S. K.
This is as a pub should be. Friendly service, a wonderfully welcoming interior and fantastic food. On a Monday lunchtime it was packed, which tells you enough. Highly recommend.
h. c.
Had a very good lunch. Sat at a table outside the front of the pub in the sun. Very friendly staff. Good real ale. Car park at rear of pub plus on road parking in the village
S. W.
Excellent customer service and fabulous quality Sunday roast. We really enjoyed all meals and we will be back for more to try other exciting dishes from your menu.
S. S.

Beautiful country village pub. Friendly, helpful staff, and lovely food.
C. R.
Really nice, loads of garden seating, quiet area and friendly staff, could do with some more cider options but worth a visit.
J. K.
Friendly staff. Food absolutely delicious. Portion sizes just right. Parking can be tricky..tiny carpark at the back. Worth a visit. Pre book though!
J. M.
Stunning food. Friendly staff & great service. It looks very unassuming from the outside but believe me the food is just stunning!!
P. N.
Another fabulous Sunday lunch. Very friendly and efficient staff, great food and a reasonable price. A local favourite.

Family celebration, we were all so impressed with the menu, plenty of lovely options from the starters, mains and puds. All the plates looked lovely and tasted great. The pub itself is in a lovely village and has a real cosy feel to it. Would thoroughly recommend.
F. C.
Nice atmosphere, very traditional pub, food was brilliant especially the chocolate tart thing
J. D.
Lovely pub with a deli in the carpark. The Old Cown at Messing is a real gem of a pub. From the wonderful building to the exquisite menu to the fantastic staff, the Old Crown never disappoints. We love the fact the service is never rushed, you have plenty of time to chat and enjoy the food and ambience, just how it should be.
J. M.
Lovely pub in a nice village setting. Food is of a high standard and and good menu choice. Food arrived in good time and tge staff were nice and friendly.
A good selection of drinks with some local brewed drinks available. I would go again and highly recommended.
W. B.
Lovely menu and the food was really delicious. Great ambience. A little slow on service but as we were there with friends that didn't matter.
D.
Recommended by family who have been a couple if times. Glad to say it exceeded pre expectations.
It's everything you want from a gastro pub, most importantly it is still a very good pub. The beer was great, atmosphere relaxed and friendly, interior was classy without being pretentious.
Their food is stunning. Quality and preparation is top notch. We were both really impressed and enjoyed a brilliant evening at the Old Crown.
J. B.
Great food, friendly staff. Will definitely go back.
G. C.
Excellent food couldn't fault, very busy but nice atmosphere and good service
G.
Excellent Sunday lunch great service
A. M.
Nice food, nice people real ales
N. S.
we were out in the area and thought we would try our luck at getting a table without prebooking , the waitress was lovely and very helpful. I have been here a few times now and never had a bad meal, freshly cooked and tastes delicious.
R. T.
Very very good grub!
M. L.
This pub combines the best aspects of a traditional friendly village pub with a lively bistro atmosphere. There is an interesting and varied menu and a menu for light bites for those with a smaller appetite.
There is no loud music and no fruit machines, just the hubbub of conversation and laughter.
The new owners have made a splendid job of retaining the old pub atmosphere while introducing their own individual character.
I will make it a regular place to eat and meet friends.
E. O.
Great pub, great food, come every boxing day and it's always brill.
N. A.
Great little country pub. Had a drink with my brother and sister and I was lovely and welcoming with friendly staff Nd good beer. We didn't have any food. Dogs welcome too.
p. b.
Good choice of beer and friendly staff. Sunday roast worth a visit too.
D. A.
Lovely village pub, very reasonable prices and a great selection of food. Sitting outside with a pint in the warm summer evening made me want to move to Messing so this was my local. A very nice place to sit and have a drink or two. Plenty of parking behind the pub and friendly staff.
M. P.
Lovely traditional pub that serves exceptional food
T. K.
Fantastic place, very friendly atmosphere and lovely food. Highly recommended
S. B.
Great atmosphere. Wonderfully varied menu, with top quality food. Misses out on a 5 star rating due to slow service. Just wish they had an extra member of staff...would make all the difference.
J. C.
Incredible food, and a nice selection of well kept ales. Staff are fantastically friendly and helpful. I had the Christmas three courses and even with tricky dietary requirements I was blown away by how good the meal was. I always try to pop in when I'm in the area
A. B. (.
A very nice spot for a drink outside in front if the pub on a very quiet road. The inside has had a recent refurb to make it more of a restaurant than a pub. The menu looks very interesting, not the usual pub "fayre", but have yet to sample.
S. S.
Our first visit to this lovely pub resteraunt, the food was lovely, it was cosy with the log fire which was welcome on a cold day. Our lunch was leisurely, the staff were friendly and efficient and we will definitely return again to this lovely pub. Thank you
D. T.
Was there on Christmas Eve and have been a couple of timers previously. We booked for New Years Eve but two of our party of four had to cancel due to illness and as we could not get two more to join us that evening we spoke to The Old Crown to see if they cvould fill 2 or 4 covers. They were extremely helpful and had people on a cancellation lshort list. They without being asked refunded us in full (we had chosen to pay basic cost in advance to stop friends paying on the day). We were disappointed not to have gone as the food and atmosphere are top rate. We are now looking forward to our next visit in February.
M. F.
Great food as always, excellent service, lovely company.
C. R.
Love this pub, brilliant service and the best Sunday lunch and a good price in the local area. The nice seating area outside and a little deli behind, book in advance as space is limited.
C. r.
Long wait for food though not that busy but when arrived was lovely . Nice beers
J. S.
Decor needs updating and is not in keeping with a pub as old as it is. That aside, our mains of Ribeye sandwich and Chicken Goujons were very good. The Pheasant Pie was disappointing. Hardly any pheasant which is strange as it costs pennies yet the dish was around 15 quid. Have eaten here a few times in the past and always been good.
A. T.
The best pub meal I have ever had was eaten here. The food and service are incredible and for a real ale buff like me the ales were well kept and a good range on offer.
D. L.
All 5 of us were impressed with the food and drinks. A great example of how to run a pub.
D. L.
