Reviews of The Whalebone

Great location. We took my mother here, never been before. We sat outside, which is very nice. We. chose Whalebone as it is dog friendly, a big plus. The food was excellent, all well presented and tasty. You need to book as it is very popular. The kitchen isn’t huge so the taking of orders and service is quite regimented as the staff want to keep everyone happy. They are young and doing their best, which is to be commended.

I cant recommend this pub enough. The staff were super friendly and polite. They loved my dog and made a real fuss of him and the food was delicious. Fantastic meal will definitely be going again!

Service is terrific, such a bunch of lovely young girls who all muck in.
View from the beer garden is one of the best I know. Could be hundreds of miles from anywhere, you wouldn't guess that Colchester is just over the hill..
Can't comment on food as haven't eaten here for a while but it looks lovely.
Separate venue for private parties is also great

Nice lunch at Whalebone pub on a lovely warm day. Good choices of starters and mains, so we opted for a main course only, which were a good size, nicely prepared and good value for money, all washed down with a nice glass of Adnams cider. Sadly couldn't manage a desert this time! Will definitely come back for another visit, in an evening.

Beautiful setting and lovely bar staff but the food didn't justify the prices in my view. Admittedly we did select the cheaper mains (though still expensive for what they were) but they were not executed to the standard I would expect for the premium price charged. I have had better food for less in Wivenhoe. I would definitely visit again though but probably just for drinks and nibbles next time.

This is everything a really good village pub should be. Tables of locals in for drink, with visitors like us in for dinner. The fresh cooked food and service is excellent. Only a short drive from Colchester not difficult to find. Looking forward to our next visit. 😊👍🥩

Loveley little village pub with two beautiful beer gardens. One out the front of the pub and one to the side. There is a slope leading to the side pub garden from the car park for easier access, rarther then steps out the back exit from the bar. The path is a resin bound path so it has good grip for those of us with mobility issues. Beautiful countryside to view whist you enjoy a refreshing drink.

I went with three friends yesterday evening hopefully to have meals as well as a real ale.
Although we weren't early and hadn't booked a table, we were welcomed and served with delicious meals, and well kept pints of Ghost Ship.
The staff were all very friendly and helped to make it a very pleasant visit.
