One of the best pubs in Colchester and the area. Cozy and traditional with a fantastic range of changing craft and cask beers and friendly chatty staff. Not sure if this place does hot food but bar snacks are available. Nice looking scotch and other whiskeys available as well as wines, ciders, lagers etc... Nice range of Belgian beers also available too. Time passes very quickly in here. Short walk from both Colchester (mainline),Colchester Town stations and the town centre. Will definitely return. For beer people this pub is also Untappd verified and has its own badge too.

Had a couple of pints here on a fairly warm day. They have a garden at the back with an area that is covered in case it's raining. Reasonably good choice of beers and drinks, although perhaps felt a bit rushed at the bar compared to some of the other places we had been in the same day.

The Victoria Inn is a free house pub situated within walking distance of Colchester train station and the town centre. My train wasn't for another hour so I popped in for a few pints, I had the local 'Maverick' lager which was decent. The pub also has a sizeable beer garden out the back. The barman was also kind enough to let me charge my phone as I didn't have mine with me. I would definitely recommend if you're in Colchester looking for a friendly traditional pub.

Good old English pub. Won the award for the best cider of last year. They serve about 8 different types of cider. I had the 7.4% alcohol. It was not as sweet as bulmers cider, but had a smoother taste. Unfortunately, they don’t serve any cooked food not to mention a pub lunch. I was looking forward to having a pub lunch, because there is always a uniqueness to the food cooked in pubs. The people in the pub were friendly. The lady who served was polite, pleasant and willing to serve. She also recommended the cider I drank. Only had one pint, since I was driving later and did not want to be over the limit.

Absolutely love this pub. Only moved to Colchester from London late last year and was worried about the pub situation, given the binge booze Britain reputation of the main strip. Despite that, have managed to find a few decent pubs, this one being the best. Independent brews on the taps, friendly, knowledgeable staff, nice beer garden and a warm atmosphere. Quite a mix of clientele from younger to older. Live music weekly, lots of ale, cider etc events. Reminds me of going to the pub with my dad, when I was a kid. Perfect. The only downside is that I haven't been able to get there as frequently as I would like, due to having had my first child recently! Photo is from the beer garden

Loved this pub, by far my favourite in Colchester. Most drinks were brewed locally, not branded and there is a cider bar where you can try some lovely flavours. It's not a food pub but they are happy for you to take your own in (it's surrounded by an array of takeaways). Staff were very friendly and welcoming. Definitely recommend this place (the grapefruit gin is superb!)

One of the most amazing establishments I've found to drink in. The best beer garden I've ever seen a massive effort has gone in to it.. The building is quite old and adds to the great feel of the place. Great ales too.. Only lacking food.... Edited from initial post.. In respect of the amazing response to the food there is loads of local takeaway shops within a minute walk I would give 6 stars and will be spending alot of time here... 'A proper pub' is the term frequently used to describe this establishment; and quite rightly so. With a top class collection of cask ales and ciders on tap, a friendly atmosphere and top staff, you'd be silly not to try an ale here for yourself. There's a drink to cater for all and I won't accept 'I don't like ale' as an excuse, the varieties and flavours are endless. Winning Best Pub in Essex many times, this reason enough to pay a visit, buy a pint and mingle with the punters!

In response to Ben Morris's review, the gentlemen in question were talking VERY loudly while the band were playing which was disruptive, disrespectful and unpleasant for the customers who were there to see the live music, plus extremely off putting to the musicians!! There were other areas of the pub that were more suitable to you if you wanted to have a chat and I believe you were asked politely to lower the levels of volume and even offered another area to sit! To leave a review 10 minutes after leaving the premises and not even speak to the management shows more disrespect and a certainly level of harshness! To rate the venue 2 after one experience could be damaging, as people often pick a location by recent reviews so thank you for doing a typical keyboard warrior act! If in future you'd like to go for a chat in a pub maybe try one that doesn't have live, great and entertaining music playing!

From the outside it does not look much but as soon as you walk through the door it is welcoming and comfortable. The 2 beers I had were both excellent and very unusual especially the Brazilian porter from Colchester brewery , tasting of coffee and vanilla. Worth another trip to Colchester just to visit this pub.

I've only been here once after viewing some properties nearby and I must say it was lovely! Still early in the day and it was filled with locals all having a good time! I ended up getting a property not so close to this pub, however I shall be returning as often as I can!

Great local beers and micro brewery treasures on rotation. You won't find Carlsberg Guinness or Strongbow here and all the better for it. Lovely staff and a brilliant jukebox. Live music on a Sunday and numerous 'events' ( beer festival, quiz nights etc.) throughout the year. It's an escape from the homogenous rubbish we get served up these days. A proper pub for proper people. Love it!

What an awesome proper pub, and the FREE music EVERY sunday is a massive bonus. great staff and a fantastic vibe. It is always lovely the pub wants to keep the artists fully respected and has a superb cctv and music system so you can see and hear the music from anywhere in the premises, but if you want to experience the music that's a designated area, it works wonderfully . Best pub in Colchester by any normal measure. OK they don’t serve food (unless you count locally sourced crisps, pork scratchings and home made pickled eggs [3 of your major food groups right there]), but the beers and ciders are sublime and surprising, and the staff welcoming to regulars and new customers alike, and delighted to talk you through the brews on offer. Oh, and most Sunday afternoons there’s live music on - walk in off the street free, gratis and for nothing, to hear top notch acts...anyone with a shred of a beating heart will praise to the rafters the quality of the bands in the Vic, and the commitment of Andrew and Sheena to keep music live in this gem of a community pub.

The Victoria has been North East Essex CAMRA pub of the year on many occasions. It serves 4 or 5 well kept beers and the publican is knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly. He has transformed the pub, from what was a dive. The outside enclosed area is nice to spill out to when it is busy in warm weather. The loos are best avoided.

Often I pop over to Colchester from Zaandam Holland and when I do the Victoria Inn is on top of my list to visit. Especially on sunday as there's allways cracking live music. The atmosphere in the Victoria is utterly friendly and feels like home even for me while I only come once or twice a year for a couple of days.
