L. B.Visited here on Saturday 27th Nov for breakfast while the car was in for service.
What a lovely place, very well decorated and very clean. The staff were outstanding, very polite and acknowledged their customers at all times. This kind of service is very rare these days, so hats off to you.
The food was also fantastic, especially for the price. I had very low expectations based on a breakfast being less the £5. This was probably one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. Amazing quality at such a low price.
Overall, the value and customer experience here is first class. I felt I was paying budget prices for first class service. Outstanding.
If your in the area or dropping your car off for a service at the local dealerships, then visit here while you wait, 100% worth it, we'll be visiting again. Can't cook breakfast this cheap again home 😁
J.Went there with the family, 3 course meals for 12 of us. Everything went smoothly and food was better than my last visit. Service at the table was very good and I think it was the manageress was very efficient and capable during and after the meals with frequent visits to the table and a complimentary drinks as a slight delay with the puddings. Will we go again, yes thanks to the table service and manageress
M. S.Staff are friendly, food was fresh and fast just a little lackluster flavour wise but that's not the pubs fault, it's a chain restaurant and so the menu isn't down to them. Toilets were clean but only 2/3 cubicles in the lady's were working and the mens were cometely out of order on the restaurant side of the pub.

L. S.Visited on a busy Saturday with a group of us (4 adults and 3 young children) Staff were great and very friendly. We ordered food which came out quickly and tasted great. The kids menu went down a treat with the little ones. A big screen in the garden was showing the football meant the adults could watch whilst the children played on the play area.
R. F. W.A good pub food is not bad. Toilets a little bit dirty but clean enough to keep a star. Disappointed with the fact the childrens play facility has been removed (indoor) it used to be the highlight of going here and what would attract us to the Merlin. The ordering at the bar was fine and expected there is also a mobile ordering option for those who wish to stay at the table. There isn’t a parking charge. Prices for food are a little bit over the top but are acceptable.

S. F.Super cheap prices but the food was so good I couldn't believe it. Got 2 Sunday dinners for £15 and the beef was so nice and plenty of food piled on my plate. Excellent meals and the service great, everybody was so nice even though it was new year's Day 👍

Had a good morning but was a bit long winded. Booked @9.30 I thought we'd be sitting and eating around that time as you could of booked at different times didnt realise we had to wait for everybody else to arrive. We are early risers. Kids enjoyed it finished about 12. Kids came out happy. Can't complain really 😀 Helpful staff. Happy Christmas ✨️
M. C.Plenty of parking. Staff were polite and attentive. Food was very good apart from one dish where the chips were nearly cold. Excellent value for money considering the portion size. No issues with cleanliness or the Covid-safe side of things.

Also very good for Derby County Football fans. As you can park here for £5.00 As long as you have your stadium ticket. And you can use your parking token to get £5.00 off your meal.

v. k. O.Nice food for a chain! Went on work lunch there, served promptly! Some dishes are nicer than others! Good menu range including vegan!
S.It's a good place to have a family meal with young children as they have a good play area inside, although many of the amusements will cost you extra money, outside they have a small playpark.
The restaurant is spacious with enough room for prams, highchairs or wheelchairs. They also have a bar area that has a pool table and TV which I presume they use for sports events etc.
The food is OK but not great but we were happy as the price was quite good, plus they have a reasonable selection for the children's menu that isn't just chicken nuggets and chips. Our shared desert was lovely and the children loved their frozen yoghurt. The staff are friendly and efficient. I would recommend it if you're looking for a cheap place eat and want to keep the kids entertained at the same time.

D. A.Good selection of food to choose from and the food is tasty. My only negative is they only serve soft drinks in one size, large. Not ideal for the kids. When a large has enough sugar/aspartame to keep them awake for days. ✌️

What a lovely place. Greeted inside by a lady singing one of Adeles songs and dressed in a Mrs santa out fit was so nice :) she can sing too!!! The food was gorgeous the service was spot on and the atmosphere was welcoming and 🎄 chrismasy !!! Definitely recommend Definitely going back again 😀 thankyou all.

Would recommend if your on a budget.
Been again recently had a discount code 😀 so had the days special which was big plate with either starter or dessert free as you can see from new photos had the dessert, payed less than the price of the two main meals admittedly we had tap water to drink but must stay healthy😁 so would reccomend this place time and time again.

W.We took our grandson with us, this pub is ok, typical chain with a dedicated area for kids, so you sort of know what to expect, but it's still irritating having some kids running around while their parents just sit on their phones, they just seem to think it's a play area that sells alcohol, and their responsibilities go out of the window once inside,of course should one of their kids end up colliding with a member of staff carrying food, it would the staff members fault.

R.Visited today at lunchtime, just 1 car space in car park available as 4 massive mobile homes parked wrongly taking up 3 spaces each ,that should of been the clue to make me turn rnd but I didn't clock on till after I ordered our food !!! Full of Irish travellers. Obviously this isn't the merlins fault as you can be seen to discriminate, but boy they ruined the whole experience. Kids galore running rnd unruly shouting fighting just causing mayhem !! Don't think manager or bar staff had the balls or initial thought to tell them to behave ect or ask the "parents " to control them as I suppose the whole place would of gone up tbh .On ordering my mums drink I specifically asked the barman NO LEMON in my mums drink as she allergic, so ....puts lemon in my mums drink , had to litteritly ask him to give me another glass as I think he was just going to take the lemon out and carry on serving in that glass ! Sorry but allergies don't work like that pal .Tbh the lad was rushed off his feet and under pressure as it was very busy dinnertime, but still no excuse. Asked about what came with it on ordering my mums lasagne as not looked at menus as we've eaten here before "he said garlic bread and side Salad " when the food came there was dressing all over the "just Salad leaves " no other side salad as in tomatoes or onion very plain imo .and some had gone on the bread ,we had to ask what dressing it was, waitress didn't have a clue bless her on allergens and asked if I had the pubs app to check myself ( obviously no food allergies paperwork available in kitchen ) where she went to look !! I unfortunately didn't have my phone on me as battery had run out .But tbh it still should be available surly ?? The waitresses were very busy like the barman but I asked her to bring us a plate so we could swap the lasagne dish onto the clean plate and take the disaster of a salad away just incase it set my mums allergies off . She did then ask us " what shall I do with the salad " ?? I said we didn't want it .Bless her tho she was doing a fab job as all the other girls were .This won't stop us eating here again, I'll just make sure I double check stuff more and ask more questions when ordering at the bar . Lasagne was as my mum said not overly hot or cold but in the middle .she ate it quickly as to not put her off I think as she was looking forward to it ,my scampi chips and peas was hot but would of sent back if wasn't my mum is too kind in a way to complain. But we also had chocolate fudge cake and ice cream to share and 2 cappuccino but barman had already put chocolate on 1 before asking if we wanted chocolate on them 🙄 nevertheless still all good . Thank you Merlin , sort of got it right
P.the app and save time at the bar. Good food at a good price plenty to choose from on the menu, only complaint was the children's pizza was cooked in a microwave, but did come with plenty of fresh carrot and cucumber sticks

J. G.Best staff and service was good. Bar ques a little long when you have food waiting on your table and you need more drinks. Kids nachos were inedible. Cheese sauce was spicy with no mention of this on the menu. But free drink for the mothers was a nice touch. And staff were lovely.

K.The food is lovely. My favourite foods there (I have only been there 2 times) are the nachos with sauce on the sid if you don't want it coated in sauce. The gammon is nice either 5oz or 15oz, it is juicy and very nice. The garlic bread is also nice with 2 big pieces on each serving. That is all I have got to say overall 4.7

C.Standard chain pub. Food was cheap, my wings were deep fried but still juicy. The BBQ sauce was just sort of thrown in the basket. Chips and curry sauce were nice enough. Despite the place being less than half full the staff all acted like they were rushed off their feet, not a smile from any of the 5 people who came to our table. Still, good on them for doing the Blue Light discount.
T.I've been twice now and both times have been a great experience and always value for money. When I visit derby it's the place I will go for food and drinks.
M. S.The car park got overcrowded fairly quickly. The space inside was slightly limited however the service and overall ambiance of the venue were excellent. I would certainly try and visit again and perhaps aim to try the food they do have on offer.

s. c.Went with friends ( 4 in party ) highly recommended from when you walk in you get a very warm welcome from the staff . Great range of food and drinks on offer at a reasonable price. Which you order from the bar . The food table service was fabulous. Very professional, well mannered , couldn't do enough for us to make sure we was happy and had everything we needed with our meal . Half way through she came back to make sure we was happy and all was OK. This young girl needs a medal . We believe her name was ( Sophie Willis) . Well done will definitely be returning .

M. M.Very busy pub, good deals on drinks and food and food is great value for the price. Barstaff and table staff are all very friendly and efficient. The app is brilliant for ordering. Would suggest booking a table especially on match days. Only downer for me is the quiz night on a Friday. We usually leave as soon as it starts, far too loud for my liking but I'm sure most people love it or they wouldn't do it.

P. F.Nice pub chain type dinner pub venue. A word of caution parking is a nightmare when Derby County is playing. Meals were reasonable and typical of pub chain. It can get very busy when the football match ends, and so can traveling by car, roads are very busy. Apart from that outside of match days a pleasant experience.

First time my family has been out to eat since lockdown and ot was so disappointing, food was very substandard and obviously frozen products, syeak was sent back if it hadn't have been I think I'd have re-soled my shoes with it, definitely gone down hill, service was fab as was the beer but food let you down this time.
E. C. V.This is the place to go if you want a good portion of tasty food for a lower price. It's even better if you take part in the daily deal; We went on Friday and they had BOGOF on Burgers. We love the BIG Plate Special if we're feeling more hungry as they really are big but still have a reasonable price. Yes, the desserts choice is lacking a little but they taste good, especially the Syrup Sponge Pudding. I will admit, because it's a typical pub, on Football days, Friday and Saturday nights, it does get rather busy and sometimes a little rowdy but if you avoid these times then it's good.

The menu has been changed and the food was delicious. We ordered through the app and the serving was quiet fast. However my partner got into trouble when the waiter poured all the drink on her by accident - poor boy. It is good to see restaurants can change better way. Keep up the good work

The rump steak was cooked perfectly and had an excellent chargrill flavour.
The only issue I had was that the app was not upto date. A real ale ordered was not available.

Right from the off the staff were friendly and personable, always a good sign. When queried about the Lilley's Ciders, they promoted it very positively and came across as knowledgeable.
Two adult and one child meal ordered and arrived quickly. All the extras, like sauces, serviettes etc all arrived quickly and with a smile.
Food was good for the typical pub food fare and went down a treat.
We would recommend the Merlin.

J. R.Thoroughly average Hungry Horse pub. Beer seems well looked after. Service is good and quick. The food is good and portion size has improved since my last review. Steak and Ale pie, for example, is very tasty, decent meat and flavour and the pie is fully crusted. (Not a casserole with puff pastry lid!) The pie was about 6" in diameter and there were plenty of chips and peas with it. Gravy portion was smallish but they always ask if you'd like more (free).

A few weeks ago I paid £130 for a meal for 2 for a special occasion at a lovely restaurant and I can honestly say the service was easily as good as that restaurant at the Merlin from all the staff who served us.
Sacha who took our order was very professional, clear and courteous making sure our order was correct before taking payment.
I even mentioned to a lady who served me some drinks later on how good and efficient her service was.
We have eaten on Wednesdays at the Merlin for curry night and always come away feeling that it was a bit lacking in quality but it is good value... This meal and service was like eating at a different pub! Night and day different I'd say. So much better!
We'll definitely be returning for a Saturday night meal on our recent findings. Such good value to!
I normally can't be bothered to write good reviews because probably like most people I feel it's just what you should receive anyway - good food and service. But in an economy where seemingly so much is wrong and falls flat on quality and service I have to give credit where credit is due and the Merlin tonight definitely deserves it.
The staff worked very hard and it certainly showed.

T.The pub is nice place to eat out but they should seriously update thier app. Once you've looked at the menu and add what you've fancy to eat I really would consider a option to take or add stuff to the current dishes on the basket. I don't eat salad on a burger and I would prefer not to come with it when served. But becuase the app does not come with the option to take away certain items or add notes for the chef. You have to go all the way to the bar, look for sombody or wait for sombody to walk by who work there to ask to edit your order. It saves time and I don't think diners want to be walking around asking to edit their orders after ordering it from the app. Apart from that it's a nice cosy place to dine and alot of entertainment which cater for everyone.

We had food there and it arrived within 15 minutes of placing the order. As it's a Greene King, you can place your food and drink orders via their app. We did that and it was so simple.
The one downside was that the drinks took a while to arrive. I was expecting them a lot quicker, but they only arrived a few minutes before the meal.
The food itself was very tasty and well cooked.
I'd definitely consider going back again......and they even have multiple large screens, for those that like their sport!!!
This is probably the closest pub to Derby County's Pride Park stadium, so consider checking if they have a game on, if visiting on a match day.

After lunch we ordered dessert at the bar, by the time I'd got back to the table our plates had been cleared, desserts again arrived in very good time, which were lovely.

Got a nice booth with a screen and the staff were friendly and welcoming although we did feel for them as a large group of loud annoying drunks decided to sit near the dining area close to people eating.
They were swearing and being really rude (indirectly, not at us or anyone in particular) my 8 year old heard all kinds of new swear words during the course of the meal.
I tried to rush them eating so we could get out of there, the food was reasonable all round. Nothing to shout about and staff were pleasant, probably wont go back though.

Great place to go for a nice bit of typical pub food. Pies, Currys and burgers, you know what to expect tbh.
Sky sports is played here for watching the games, plus closely located to the stadium.
It's also family friendly with a small play area inside and outside, plus baby changing facilities.

If you order on your phone via the app there's extra discounts, food should arrive in 15mins or less which it did(and it was busy) and well cooked. Salads were very fresh with great taste.
Drinks are always a tad more e pensive in these establishments as well, but there is a very big selection.

Car park is often packed - I almost always seem to get the last spot. There's offers through the week which differ depending on the day. There's often football games shown on big screens and even at some dinner tables, so you wont have to set up your phone or tablet during the meal.....

K. K. B.Yes this might very well be part of a chain, but myself, my husband and our children absolutely love the place. The food is always exactly as it should be. Everything comes out together so there's no waiting for everybody else's food. We have never been let down by the quality of the food. The staff are always kind and courteous and nothing is too much trouble. The children love the fact that they aren't restricted in what they can do and they really enjoy both the indoor and outdoor play areas. I happily give The Merlin a 5* rating and would recommend it to anyone.

The thing was I was with family. Now I know why I don't like coming here. That and the bad food. At least the food was good. Xxx
M. R.Yes it is a 'chain pub', but is easily the best of the Hungry Horse pubs in Derby, the food is inexpensive and very good quality. The service is friendly and attentive, is what you would expect in a far more expensive establishment. One side of the Merlin is family orientated particularly to families with young children, whilst the other is a little more suited to couples/small groups, live sport is shown.

It is a 'Hungry Horse' restaurant, which is very popular with diners, & football / sport fans. Staff are warm & friendly, & highly recommend the place, for all occasions. They even open to serve breakfast, at 10am, each day. You'll also like it for the relaxing atmosphere, but can get very busy on home football match days. It is family friendly, value for money, with a nice menu, & even, indoor & outdoor play ares for those little ones.

This wanderer opted for 6oz gammon and a glass of J2o and lemonade and the other wanderer opted for a cup of tea and an all day breakfast.
The meals arrived very quickly and were relatively warm barring a mix up with the other wanderer 's dinner all was ok.
The pub itself is relatively easy to find just follow the signs to Pride Park and the pub is on the right of the Lexus/Toyota dealerships.
There is ample parking and on a nice day it is possible to sit outside.
They carry a good range of beers and lagers.
All in all a good dining experience.

We then waited 20 mins before asking where our sweets were. Passable but very small. Ok we do not expect large portions on the Golden Years menu but we do expect to be able to see the food. Will stick to The Cherry Tree in future, proper food, proper value.

A. W.Been here loads of times for meals and just drinks. The place is shutting down tonight for refurbishment so last meals at 8pm. When the 3 of us arrived at 7pm I was amazed at the number of tables that were still reserved. This, I presumed was to cut down the amount of meals coming out of the kitchen. No Halumi, rice, tomatoes etc at this time of night, so nightmare scenario for our vegetarian diner. Veg curry meal came (minus 2 dips) 10 minutes before other two meals. Most dissapointing meal we have had since dining in this place.

H. S.If you can be merely whelmed, the Merlin performs this task with perfect adequacy. It's an habitual Friday lunchtime haunt and it can get very busy. Usually when it does so, initial serving times go up and food quality suffers slightly. Don't let this put you off, though: staff are always smiling and happy and the food is never terrible - it's just rare that it's great :-)

With offers everyday including a big plate special Tuesday for £6 (selected things), buy one get one free burgers on friday and also curry and a pint for £5.50? Yes i’ll have 5! I do recommend having the double daddy burger on a friday as it is huge and works out at £5.50 it two of you got one each. Overall I really like this pub and have spent many nights here and have many memories here with probably more to come! Do remember if you come to this pub do not use any F BOMBS!
