Reviews of Ye Olde Dolphin Inne
A. D.
Cute place with lots of different areas of the pub to sit in and drink/eat. We had a mixed grill, which was enough food for two hungry people and it came within a reasonable amount of time and was good. We enjoyed it. Couldn't sense anything about the fact that it's meant to be haunted, sadly. The music was also good - nice cheesey stuff that was fun to sing along to whilst we waited for our food to come.
J. D.
Old style pub dating back to 1530. Worth a visit.
R. E.
Nice pub with a good selection of real ale , very historic feel to it , friendly staff but a bit pricey.
M. R.
Derbys oldest pub, not THE best pub in my humble opinion but well worth visiting. Good range of real ales in a choice of historic rooms. Enjoy. M
M. S.
One of the best drinking pubs in Derby. With old heritage and the feeling of warmth in your heart.
S. H.
Nice cosy, quirky old world ale house. Staff are polite and friendly and there is a decent selection of beers. Cosy interior but can get a bit warm. The bar can be a little crowded as it seems to be the original but adds to the experience atmosphere. There is a beer garden at the back which is quite spacious and relaxing.
From time to time there is live music either indoors or out on the stage in the beer garden.
E. T. c.
A nice clean establishment with plenty of choices, the snug with its coal fire is especially nice on a cold winter day.
One of the oldest pubs in derby and well worth a visit.
M. W.
Nice friendly pub, great atmosphere and a large range of beer.
C. W.
This pub to me felt like home. Small little back room that was nice and cosy, I never wanted to leave. Have been here several times on trips to Derby and loved every one. On the list for my next visit too.
Their mixed grill was also great value for money. Had steak on a previous visit to. Really nice
P. M.
Always a good pint but the pub is looking a little bit tired and has had some strange alterations. It would be great if someone with some vision could make the outside a little bit more attractive and green. We have been going to this pub for 40 years so they must be doing something right.
M. C.
Friendly, affordable. Quaint traditional pub. Will recommend to family and friends.
C. S.
Still the best pub in Derby city centre. The staff are incredibly friendly and very knowledgeable about the real ales sold. The two brilliant quizzes a week will get your brain working. The pub is comfortable, welcoming and warm. You must visit the Dolphin if you've not been before or you're a visitor from out of town. It is Derby's oldest pub and steeped in history and spooky sightings.
D. S.
Decent pub. I would stop in again when visiting Derby. Billed as Derby's oldest pub.
J.
Great old pub with a nice atmosphere very cosy. The staff are very friendly me and my sister in law love stopping by for a few drinks when we're out shopping.
E. B.
My favourite pub, good beer, still magnificent
D. P.
Best real ale pub in Derby especially if you can secure the snug
R. C.
Claiming to be oldest pub in the city, a number of separate rooms with a through corridor that apparently was once a right of way . Beer range and quality very good
L. B.
Lovely old worldly pub but made more than welcome and the staff were superb.A superb range of ales in top condition.
C. R.
Always a proper pub with good beer
D. M.
A lovely pub with lots of character. My second visit.
G. P.
Fantastic pub with a fabulous selection of craft beer. Great customer service. And a fab venue to watch England. Highly recommend.
T. J.
The oldest pub in Derby c1530...so another 11 years and it will be 500 years old. For Real Ales you get a fantastic selection and all superbly kept. Each room around the bar has its own characteristics of warmth and age.. it is a timeless place with lots of stories to tell you. A must visit Pub for the Beers if nothing else, but all to be sipped and savoured in a pub steeped in history...fabulous..!!
C. S. F.
Lovely pub. Lots of lovely little rooms to escape to. Decent food. Nice drinks. Lovely friendly staff who are just so nice! Very happy visit.
I knocked off a star because I wanted an amendment to my meal (no other customers eating), and the chef was unwilling to accommodate. Would have been happy to pay extra but it was just a straight "no".
B. D.
Great atmosphere, loved the heritage.
C. P.
One of the oldest pubs in Derby.
Located at the heart of city centre. The pub looks and feels old.
Out door seating available but does not have heating lamps in cold winters.
Certain sections are forbidden to children, not sure why.
It's beer seems alright and average.
Very very limited parking at the front and off street paid parking available at the back.
D. T.
Been using this place for some time now. I've always loved it, it's a homely feel about it for a city centre pub. I don't drink alcohol these days but have seen an excellent choice of beers and lagers including "real ale". It's steeped in history and is apparently home to some ghosts. I've never seen evidence of that though. For travellers and locals alike I'd thoroughly recommend visiting here.
C. C.
Plenty of real ales and guest beers.
Bar area two cosy rooms with real fires and separate dining area. Nice steaks.
Court yard at the back with live bands in the summer and a decent beer festival too. A proper pub steeped in history.
D. W.
Its a lovely old pub, traditional and lots of nucks and crannies. We enjoyed a glass of vino and ale. The service was ok. The downside came when one of the customers started talking loudly about his neighbours, lots of racist comments said and to our surprise the other customers in the room joined in...clearly had the same viewpoint. Felt unsettled and promptly left, unsure if we would return or recommend?!
P. “. b. E.
Been going here on a weekend for 20 plus years, great little pub, good location, food has always been good. Friendly staff
K. H.
Nice pub with an olde worlde feel located 1 minute walk from Derby Cathedral. A nice pub to enjoy a drink and relax. Close to town centre too.
T. M.
Great pub, lovely food and a amazing history, ask them about the ghosts 👻
E. M.
I visit the dolphin regularly, the selection of ales, gins and everything in between is second only to the staff in the pub! Wow, I love this pub, would definitely recommend to anyone! Me and my friends love it here...the Sunday quiz is also an excellent way to end the weekend! Love the choice of ales, the real fires, the different cosy seating area's and best of all no gimmicks, just a great pub to enjoy a pint or two.
M. S.
Lovely old pub, get in the snug if you can
C. M.
Came here with my partner for his birthday. He loved it and I was extremely impressed. the building itself has loads of character especially with its age. I have been before just for drinks but as we had a meal the food was served upstairs. It was all tasty and good quality food. The service was excellent and the staff were on hand for anything we might need. It was a great night and we will come again.
P. D.
A beautiful pub with a good selection of real ales food is available but at a reduced menu
a. m.
Lovely old pub nice staff and great beer
A. W.
This is one of the oldest pubs in Derby . The atmosphere inside reflects this with stone floors and exposed beams. The main attraction though is the fine selection of well kept real ales. Definitely a must if you like your real ale. Love it.
G. H.
Brilliant pub steeped in history, low beams, a snug, real ales. What more do you want from a pud. Always busy keep with a good mix of people. One of my favourite Derby pubs.
K. B.
Many memories here over the last 55 years. Always a great friendly cosy meeting place.
P. C.
Great old pub friendly staff and a good pint best pub in Derby definitely will be going again 👍
S. R.
Think it's the oldest pub in England?... It may be, old trip to Jerusalem, in notts?.
Full of character, and the beer is great. Friendly staff. A must visit, when you are in Derby.
G.
Oldest pub in Derby I believe. Quirky little rooms and friendly staff (or is it the other way round?). The real ale choices were a bit limited when I went recently, but in the past have been good. Food is good and well worth a visit if you're in the area.
J. F. (.
It's an amazing place to go but for me as an ale drinker.. Only 3 bespoke ales and 5 commercial ie bass, doombar, pedigree etc. My ale was poured from a jug rather than the gravity keg. It was darwins origin. Never had before but a slight twang. Anyway well worth a visit as being one of the last original pubs in derby
S. D. (. L. o. S.
Pre-match pint and a veggie sausage cob, sat next to an open fire in this lovely old pub was a fine way to pass an hour. Service was friendly and the food was decent pub grub, nothing fancy but well cooked and very tasty.
S. H.
Lovely for a lunchtime meet up of old friends.
P. A.
Quaint, old pub. Several small rooms and larger terrace. Food available. Live music on the terrace (mainly during the summer. One of the oldest inns (if not the oldest) in Derby. The seven stars Inn also has a claim to that price.
C. P.
Decent local for a reunion. Beer quality was reasonable but little choice because it was not challenging...much of a muchness...staff very good. The pub trades too much on its antiquity and not on its beer offer.
j. b.
Great food and beer today, as always.
J. S.
Great selection of beer. Always changing the menu and if you like something but lots of it as they rotate them quite often. Will allow you to sample at no cost and help you find the perfect pint.
S. W.
Traditional real ale pub with food. Serves meals from the bar and also has a restaurant upstarts. Outside seating available. Three rooms, each with bar service. The snug has a real fire which is lit when the weather is cold. Stage outside has bands playing occasionally. Weekly quizzes. Good value for money.
A. S.
Good staff and nice outdoor space
N. K.
Great old pub lots character
I. G.
I've been going to the Dolphin since I started work in Derby in the late sixties and I still go on a Friday lunchtime with my old chums. The Bass is one of the best pints in Derby and there is good pub grub too. The building is one of the oldest in Derby, very well cared for and almost exactly the same as the day I had my first pint there!
Ian
G. P.
Great pub, love it.
M. W.
Nice old pub and good range of beers
P. B.
Lovely old pub. Nice staff and amazing food.
N. K.
Great place of historical interest and not forgetting a nice real ale in nice surroundings.
J. B.
Lovely cosey pub I don't know what the meals are like as we called in after viewing the weeping poppies at the Silk Mill. We just had drinks and entered into the quiz which was fun. This was only my first visit here after quite a few years. A lovely warm atmosphere oh quiz was free and half time a lovely bowl of chips each we would definitely be back.😀
I. G.
Fantastic great staff and what a building! The beer was spot on, even if you aren't a bitter drinker try the bass.
D. W.
Lovely old pub with a good selection of real ale. The Sunday night quiz is good fun, with free entry and free chips at half time. We had a great evening.
G. M.
Good pub in a historic building. Nice patio bit for when the weather is good. Decent, but not great, variety of beers and that loses it a star for me. Also always advertising 'psychic' nights, which puts me right off.
R. W.
If you're having a steak make sure you ask for it to be served on a plate rather than a hot skillet. My medium rare steak was well done by the time I came to eat it. Other than that the food was nice enough, and dessert was good.
N. W.
Went to my uncles Wake here yesterday. The spread was great but I was very disappointed with one of the staff who publicly accused a family member of pointing when ordering a drink. My family calmly protested that he was not pointing but putting his thumb up to order. The disgruntled barman then told him not to point but to use the bell in a very patronising tone. Very very rude and disrespectful considering this was a setting to remember a family member who had died. The other staff serving us were lovely. A real shame!
H. B.
Pretty little ... Pretty old Pub ... Pretty good live music!
A great place to be ... 5 stars
J. W.
Always great in the Dolphin, it never changes and is a great place for a few beers or to start a night out. 🍻
D. H.
Lovely olde pub, nastiest I've seen it for years
M. B.
Nice quiz night on a Tuesday. Great range of cask ale
A. M.
Great selection of beers including my favourite Bass. Traditional pub not ruined by modernization, warm friendly staff. Dogs allowed too.
P. M.
Monday December 18th, had 2 course Xmas meal. The food was delicious, and hot, the Thai fish cakes were excellent. The service was spot on, and staff couldn't do enough for us. Will definitely be back

Such a stunning pub with great food, the style and design of this place really gives you an idea of what it may have been all those hundreds of years ago. Definitely worth a visit from South Africa🐃

Beer was up to usual standards and food was served quickly and it was tasty but the menu seems to have shrunk since last time i was in. Still a great pub all and all.
R. J.
One of my favorite stops while in Derby. Great cask ales and great food to match. Nice place to have a pint while sitting by the fire place on a rainy day.

K. A.
Good old fashioned pub with various bars. It has a good selection of beers served by happy friendly staff.

Great food and very well kept beer.
The only warning is: don't upset the chef or he might chuck a 'fluffy' dumpling at you!
c. W.
Lovely old pub and super staff.

Fantastic building, wish there was more information on the history of the place.
g.

Great old pub in derby, alleged to be the most haunted pub in the UK. Nice place just to busy on a weekend night and not enough staff. Food is fantastic.
J. S.
Very welcoming . Clean .good beer. friendly staff. Sunday lunch was very good value .home cooked Defo go back for another .
S. P.
Treat yourself to a drink in a real fire lit snug one winters night. Full of character this place and one of the last of the proper old boozers.
P. M.
This pub used to be brilliant. Not any more. The pub was quiet and unassuming. They should have had the jukebox on. It could be so much better.

Great cosy intimate pub. Not a place i would recommemd for food but for a fun night at a pub, free from televisions and overly loud music this is the place.
M. B.
A very old typical pub ! Nice food and drinks but the place is quite small, unsuitable for groups of more than 5-6 people
J. H.
I think this is a contender for the oldest pub in Derby. Very attractive interior with several separate and cosy bar rooms. Good beer, and food was very good when we visited too.
